This is one of the most disappointing games of this year. The story sucks, (most of) the new characters suck, the old characters seem almost completely different to what the first game established and the game drags way to hard. The game does get a lot right however: Its beautiful, the art direction is fenominal, the animation is amazing, it's the peak of visuals this console generation and there isn't a single issue there. Regardless of bad writing all the voice acting is superb. The gameplay in the first 14 hours (i played on hard, time of play can scale depending on difficulty) is amazing, there was enough changed made to the gameplay loop in my opinion to make it feel fresh after the first game. However after the midway mark the game really starts to drag and the gameplay starts to get repetitive, so the obvious solution here would be to tie up the game with one last final boss? or a last giant combat zone like the first game? NOPE! Instead why don't you start all over again as a new character with no upgrades or gear. Oh and that second section really killed the enjoyment for me, they really try to make you care about a character that you don't like (spoiler, they fail at making you like her) and her gameplay sections are boring (with the ONE exception of the skyscraper rooftop section, that was fun) which kills since you have to play 14 more hours of this. Oh and the ending! Its terrible! The entire game was for nothing! At the end of the first game you felt like you went on this giant adventure and that the charterers had made some huge consequential decisions! Whereas the last of us 2 feel's like you took the start of the game, deleted a few charecters, deleted a few fingers and then for like 5 minuets added a baby! NOTHING HAPPEN'S!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh and don't even get me started on the plot armour! They try to mimic Joel's injury from the first game with Ellie near the end. In TLOU1 Joel's injury was used to drive the story, it showed how much Ellie cared for him and how desperate she was to save him which built up their characters immensely! In TLOU2 its used as an excuse for Ellie to stumble and complain in a few sections. This is one of many examples that shows nothing matters in the last of us 2.

(Quick note: i haven't touched on any LGBT+ material from the game, personally i had no issue with it and i don't believe it had any effect on my opinion of the game or the story. I just though id let you know)

    Played on: base model PS4

Well, I actually dont expect anyone to check out this review since the game got advertised everywhere as "the best game ever" but f*ck it, this is wrong on so many levels.

To begin with, the trailer that was released nearly 3 years ago about Ellie singing is misleading and has absolutely nothing to do with the actual game. In TLOU part 2 you wont get to kill or encounter fireflies (you do encounter former fireflies but whatever) and the new enemies of the game are some random people you never heard of, that are introduced with the killing of the main character in the series. The rest of the game is about seeking vengeance featuring Ellie and Abby ?! One of the people you hate straight from the beginning.
You then spend hours in the same city (whereas in the first game you would actually play out a whole year) over only 3 days and that's basically 90% of the game. What actually makes the game really unlikeable is the fact that you play as Abby (i have nothing against the character although its introduction was meant to make the player hate it) for nearly 9-10 hours to show you that she isnt all wrong after all but what do we care tbh ? At this point of the game, the devs are just trying to force the player to like a character he labelled as the worst thing ever few hours back.

But that's the plot, it's up to everyone to like it or not (and i'm not even talking about THAT sex scene, you what what i mean, that was really out of place and unnecessary, or the end that's not only sad but also frustrating and really not rewarding to the players that spent hours on the game).

What makes the game really bad (in my opinion) is that it doesnt make any sense from the very beginning and is a disgrace to TLOU. Let me explain :

At the very beginning of the game, you discover Abby and it is made very clear that she's looking for someone (we quickly understand that she's looking for Joel). She then, by some miracle gets rescued by this one guy out of everyone that could be patrolling.

' I take a short moment to remind you that in the first game it is made clear that neither Joel nor Tommy are stupid in any way, it is shown several moments that Joel is smart and the reason he's still alive after all this time is because he doesnt trust easily (just see how long it took him to accept Ellie is immune, how he dealt with Henry and Sam, how he found out about the ambush etc...) Basically, this guy might no be a genius but he's smart enough to be cautious about people.

Then after, he (and his brother) follows Abby to her camp and then settle there without being careful what so ever, enter in their place apparently unarmed (at least for Joel) and then walk out in the middle of a room before telling out loud his name. Then gets surprised people know about him and doesnt even try to draw his gun, no. The guy that we learned to love in the first game despite all the pain he causes around him and the fact that he lies about Ellie, all of that is gone because he's now turned into a dumbass. I'm not gonna lie, at this point of the game i was already done and I never felt this pissed in a story-based videogame before. I didnt want to play anymore because what was next was pretty straight forward and predictable, its about seeking revenge.

Not only is this enough to ruin everything you built up with the main protagonist of the first game that is now regarded as some idiot that can't fight back and dies for the sole purpose of giving a reason to play the game, but everyone has no also turned into some Biblic good samaritan and every time Ellie / Abby could die, they are spared for no valid reason except that they are main characters. In the first game, it didnt take longer that seconds for Joel to finish off Marlene because HE KNOWS she would go after them, gosh they even made it a thing in the first game. But in part 2 nah, lets not kill the girl that pretends she'll kill us. Nah, lets not kill the girl that's friend with a pregnant woman. Nah let's not kill the girl that killed my beloved spiritual father figure, my friend after i just had to kill nearly 200 people just to get to her.

Idk man, this is disappointing. Dont buy this game, it's a major let down. Lets just hope they wont ruin it any more with a part 3...

Don’t waste your money, if you love last of us part 1. Story is all about deaths and There are no meaning of deaths. I wish I couldn’t play this game. In a nutshell, one of the best video games of this generation. I usually refrain from giving a 'score' to things, but given the quite frankly unbelievable number of so-called 'reviews' with a score of 0 (this alone should make The Last of Us Part II a worthy case study for social scientists), I feel obliged to write my two cents. I usually refrain from giving a 'score' to things, but given the quite frankly unbelievable number of so-called 'reviews' with a score of 0 (this alone should make The Last of Us Part II a worthy case study for social scientists), I feel obliged to write my two cents. Having played Part I, arguably also one of the best video games of the past generation, my expectations for the sequel were very, very high. I did my best to avoid the leaks prior to launch, and took my time playing the game, until the very end. It's almost hard to believe Sony and Naughty Dog took so many risks with a AAA title, but thankfully they did, and hopefully paved the way for others to follow. The narrative is extremely well thought, and intense. Every graphical, audio, and game play-related aspect has been improved and feels next-gen. But the story, the dialogues, the character building, are what makes The Last of Us Part II an unforgettable experience, and one especially important to engage with, and think about, during these troubling times. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to begin...the story of Last of Us II is a catastrophic failure. The reason for this is the same reason Game of Thrones Season 8 ended hollow, or why Star Wars VII-IX rang hollow. The reason is that the 'plot' does not 'earn' the story. In Star Wars, the characters don't evolve at all, they're just carried forward by the story and plot sometimes does and sometimes doesn't make sense in this regard. In Game of Thrones, Daenerys had every reason to burn the Red Keep to the ground and kill Cersei. The plot however did not give her reason to kill children and other civilians. But that's the story D&D wanted to tell so that's the story that got told, whether or not the plot supported it.

Unlike movies and TV series however, what Mr. Druckman fails to remember is that Last of Us 2 is also an 'interactive' medium, which means that players do own their outcomes. Choice means players are invested in that outcome. Choice on how to navigate through a dangerous part of the game, choice on whether or not to throw the ball to the dog or outside the fence (as Abby), big choices and little choices. And in Last of Us Part II, key character decisions (such as whether Nora lives or dies, or Abby lives or dies, are critical to have the player 'engage' and feel responsible and accountable to the result).

Let's take Joel as an example. He could have had a choice, either go back with the strangers he met in the snow, or part ways and trudge through Clickers with no ammunition and injuries. It's likely in both cases he'd have died as a result of the circumstances. At least in either case though, the player, not Mr. Druckman, are determining the outcome of their beloved characters. That's the difference between unidirectional media (movies or novels) and interactive media (Last of Us and Last of Us 2).

Now Mr. Druckman might say that players had no more choices in part 1 than part 2. To an extent this is accurate, however in part 2 the stakes are a lot higher. The higher the stakes, the more opportunity players should have to be accountable for the outcome. Mass Effect (except the tail end of Mass Effect 3) did this brilliantly (and it too is a narrative game, so it can be done).

Taking the interactive part out of the equation for a minute, there is 'plot' and 'story.' The story is what happens, and the plot are the events that lead us to the story's conclusion. (What happens? Joel dies would be a story). The plot, he is killed by someone who wants revenge or he is killed by clickers or he is killed by extreme cold etc. And each of these plot points have impacts on the characters who experience them.

In one case, Ellie would blame herself for 'not' going with the strangers, in another she'd want revenge for what they did etc. The 'plot' allows for the story to advance. Without a plot, the story is not 'earned' and feels shallow or forced. That is what happens with Last of Us 2. Mr. Druckman forces characters to act against their own established modus operandis in order to artificially create plot that drives the story into the revenge/divisive brutal allegory that Last of Us 2 becomes.

Unfortunately though, because a logical plot was abandoned to maintain the story that Mr. Druckman wanted to tell, Last of Us 2 is an abysmal tale of preaching about revenge, was rife with deus ex machina, and had a litany of plot holes.

To you folks at Naughty Dog. It's not that Joel died, it's not even how he died, nor is it playing Abby for 10 hours that causes the frustrations among your most ardent fans. It's that the plot does not lead to those outcomes being earned or logical. The plot points you provided require suspension of disbelief, disengagement by the player, or acceptance that the characters' victories in Last of Us 1 were hollow and pointless and thus, the player's time invested in that game was meaningless. See where this is going?

That may be the story you wanted to tell, great. It's your IP. Just give your players enough credit and have your writing team work a bit harder so the story is earned by the plot.

As of now, because story is so central to Last of Us 2, and because it is so abysmally told through this game, you get a 1 rating from me on Metacritic (this is how I choose to voice my discontent with your approach to this game that 'I' put many hours into playing - It's my time to use as I see fit, I chose to play Last of Us 2, I regret doing so, and I'm telling you through my score that I regret doing so for ALL of the reasons I listed above).

No amount of graphics, clever game-play, or amazing acting and motion capture can overcome LOU2's deficiency in plot and story. I hope next time, you give your fans enough credit and let them take part in bringing the story to the conclusion you want, vs cramming it down their throats with a plunger. We actually are smarter than you seem to think we are.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILERS. People are trying to say 'You're SUPPOSED to hate playing as Abby!', 'You're SUPPOSED to hate fighting Ellie'.. So they make parts of a game that we are supposed to hate and then are surprised we hate it? I was sad at what happened with Joel, sure, but it was not surprising. A main character dying is not a surprise (its been done, a lot). I was expecting it in part I, was pleasantly surprised he survived. Now it's 'Don't you know these characters are flawed?'... Yeah, Joel basically doomed humanity in game one, you are not amazing for realising he isn't perfect. GTA you play as a sadistic murderer. You don't wish you were playing as a cop. Amazingly, I didn't care about Abby's journey, because I didn't come back for her. Want a new story? Make a new game. I wanted all Ellie's journey. The people we came back for, having played the first game. New games have been made with side characters that are awesome - Chloe in Uncharted standalone game? Awesome. But they don't force it upon you, especially when that character murders the person you spent the entire first game bonding with and understanding. But considering game one was NOT done in irritating constant flashbacks, but was linear in its timeline, and only did character changes when the other main character was out of commission, it made sense. As Ellie, I was exploring everything, I was checking everything, because I was rooting for her. I wanted her and Dina to succeed in what they set out to do. I was worried for them. I wanted them to get home together. I wanted her to have the best weapons and gear. As Abby, I raced through every aspect of it, because I didn't care. I knew I didn't want her to survive! And that means I didn't care about most of the game. And in the end, there was literally no satisfaction. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I adored the first game. From the powerful characters to the strong and compelling narrative and the bond between Ellie and Joel. This game nowhere near lives up to the legacy of its predecessor, to say the least. This game has completely abandoned Ellie and Joel's bond by killing Joel in the crudest most disrespectful fashion imaginable. Joel's premature death was done for nothing more than shock value. On top of this, the game forces you to play with the character who killed the former beloved protagonist for half of the game. It just doesn't make any sense! The game in no way allows you to resonate with Abby's character prior to her irredeemable act which IMO prevents the player from caring about Abby's storyline at all. The game overall attempts to manipulate your emotions into revering Abby as the hero of the story through her flashbacks and sequences and making you resent Ellie, a character whom you have grown to love so very much from the first game.

Both Ellie and Abby's choices in the game felt so very out of character for both of them. What little character they did have in this game. The story does little to make you feel enthralled in their choices as more and more time passes they just kept getting more and more predictable. The decisions that Ellie made in the game clearly had a traumatizing effect on her (Certainly not a fan of how they handled any of the this). But Abby, on the other hand, felt no remorse for any of her actions and dismissed them all as if they meant nothing. Abby's quest for revenge was successful and yet seemed to have no effect on her, yet Ellie's left with her with nothing which is just weak writing and doesn't make sense. As I aforementioned they try to make you venerate Joel's murderer over Ellie so they leave Abby with everything and Ellie with nothing but pain and misery.

The ending is just goddamn absurd. Ellie spends all of this time, builds all of this effort, kills all of Abby's friends (including Mel who was pregnant regardless of self-defense), yet in the end, she couldn't bring herself to kill the one person responsible for Joel's murder. It just feels so vague and pointless at that point. The game's theme is shallow in comparison to the first game. I mean ending the cycle of revenge is just cliche and isn't portrayed properly in this game in general. None of this is what the first last of us represented. The first game offered a much more in-depth meaning that resonates with the player.

*Now some good parts to the game*

Graphics: These are some of the best graphics I have ever seen on the PS4 hardware and IMO is second to none. From the beautifully crafted environment to the attention of detail on each surface.

Music: While I feel the theme and atmosphere of the game were shallow you can't deny the beauty of the music in the game.

Gameplay: This game offers little to no innovation to the combat system or companion Ai. But it does however improve enemy AI dramatically. This games Ai's are able to flank change cover well etc.

Flashbacks: The game offers several flashbacks of Ellie and Joel's adventures subsequent to the first games ending. While taunting they were the only things left of what made the first game so great.

That's it for my review. This was incredibly hard for me to make as I completely venerated the first game. BUT I hope you understand my point of view.

    *Bad Parts*

Plot holes: Several inconsistencies to several characters

Characters: Characters in this game are poorly developed (some aren't even fully developed) and do not encompass everything necessary to be distinctive or interesting in any way to the player.

Character Development: All characters simply do not change throughout the story and remain static which shatters the Character's development in general.

They could’ve done several things to make Joel’s death better imo but just killing him just for plot while disregarding his character leaves a bad taste. Another thing i didn’t like about the story was the new characters that were added. the only one i liked was Jesse and even still he was pretty meh. they kill the main character and then throw in several new characters that we’re supposed to care about. I just think they could’ve made the new characters better and not kill every single one of them off before we even start to like them. “we’ll kill off these 2 characters that we’ve seen for about 30 minutes and expect the player to be sad about it” Another issue was the sudden switch from playing as Ellie to Abby. Quick question Naughty Dog, why tf are you making us play as the character that killed our favorite killer and then make us go through some of the most boring/predictable stuff. like at this point i already know there’s gonna be an enemy @ the bottom of this slide or at the end of this conveniently placed door/window. they also try and make us feel bad about Abby but you really can’t after yknow SHE KILLS JOEL. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Playing through the game, I wanted to give the writing the benefit of the doubt that it would get better. It didn't.

There are SO MANY things the writer could have done but didn't and it destroyed what a great game it could have been story wise. The gameplay is the only redeeming quality of this game.

My reasoning As a writer: (Spoiler warning)

Abby and her friends didn't feel remorse for their actions. Not once was Abby haunted by what she did. You can't FORCE someone to feel bad for characters that don't deserve sympathy.

Too many conversations that were never had. Ellie and Abby could have come to an understanding, but no. Many things in the writing were flat and destroyed what the first game was. Killing Joel was a mistake, Showing Abby and Her friends having no regrets for what they did, That was a mistake. Dina leaving Ellie at the end, That was a mistake.

I could go On and On about the catastrophe this game was story wise but I can't find the words to express how disappointed I am that Neil let it fall this way. This game should have been torn down and done from scratch story wise. You wasted the actress and actors' time on this flaming pile of garbage. They all did fine but the writing, Piss Poor and it tried to Force a message rather than let the players find out on their own.

As a writer you're not meant to force a message upon your readers or players. It's supposed to be ambiguous so they can come to their own conclusions about these things. You can't force us to feel anything doing it the way you did. This failure deserves to be a reminder that the series has been done wrong.

Neil can say "You don't know Joel and Ellie like I do" All you damn well want because Apparently it isn't true, Plenty of us have a better understanding of their characters than you ever will.

Neil you're a terrible writer and I Hope this failed project serves as the final nail in the coffin for you. The first game was Phenomenal and now it's apparent that you are abandoning good writing for a **** message you want to force on people. Hope this cripples you financially because this failure won't be forgotten by the fans...Ever, They will see your name and forever hate it.

hope doing what you did was worth it, and I hope you get everything you deserve because you failed as a writer. From one writer to another your best option would be to Do it all over again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us II is a game whose story challenges the player in ways that most other games don't. Like many games, it makes the player feel strongly about its characters. Unlike many games, it uses its narrative to ask the player to change their minds about them. To see that your attachment to a character doesn't make them a hero. And that the the person you see as a villain can be motivated by the same internal interests as the characters you love. Many will have you believe the story is bad, or stupidly simple. That is not the case here. This game is just more emotionally complex than a lot of people are ready for right now. Many people had certain expectations for what should happen in a story, and when those expectations weren't met, they blamed the story. This game turns what seems like a revenge plot on the surface into an emotional mountain climb. It's tough to experience, but worth it in the end. Expand

Actually now that I think about it when I was 5 I was coming up with way better stories then just “You killed my father prepare to die” ... did Neil druckman watch princess bride and say “yea... this Diego Montoya guy gets it...” lol. I mean princess bride did that because it was incredibly cheesy and stereotypical and because of that it’s a comedy... and a damn good one too... TLOU2 was supposed to be a drama... Shakespeare would be rolling in his grave for mixing these two concepts. (Besides, when I was a kid playing with the army men. My protagonist actually killed the guy who killed his father... He didn’t Pu$$¥ out at the last second like in TLOU2 LolZ. What Terrible terrible writing... ) I’m legit worried about the HBO tv show cuz druckman is directing that too... can someone fire him off it and invite in the actual original creator and writer of the first TLOU? She actually knows how to captivate an audience for a decade. Expand

Right from the start you can tell that blood, sweat and tears were put into this game. The game is absolutely stunning when it comes to its graphics and cutscenes. From little details like characters playing with their fingers, to nervously shaking their leg. The emotions characters can envoke through their facial expressions and live eye movements is incredible, something that I see a lot of games lack. The actors do a tremendous job in bringing these characters, old and new, to life in the game's cutscenes and conversations. The atmosphere can really be felt here in almost every area of the game. Even the smallest sound can make you quickly paranoid. Every footstep, glass smashed and shot fired sounds good. The soundtrack of the game is great, although dramatically underused. When it comes to gameplay, I feel like they have built upon it enough for it to be satisfying and fun for the most part. This game is meant to be played on Survival difficulty, if you really want to experience the desperateness of your every move and struggle for survival. Every shot missed is an opportunity lost. The scarcity of the resources make you cherish what you craft and how to best use it to your advantage. At times the choices have to be made quickly with no time to contemplate, adding to the experience.

Now come all the things the game has not done very well. Right of the bat the game decides to go in a direction that changes the atmosphere from then to the end. It never feels the same after the first few hours. The events that happen are not handled very well as the game doesn't let you sink your teeth back into the returning characters. The game mostly focuses on the new characters, dramatically, affecting the way you feel about returning ones at times. Even after knowing that the actors have done a great job some scenes and dialogue seem to fall flat at times. Not making sense, or doing and/or saying something totally out of character. You don't spend much time with the characters you would like to spend time with. Story doesn't seem to be as sharply written, and that really hits hard.

The back half of the game makes you play as this new character that I didn't care much about. Finding myself bored throughout the second half of the game. Although they introduce a handful of characters, I did not care for any of them as well as for the story they were telling. It turned into a game that I just wanted to be over and done with. Although, I do think that people that have never played the first game could find this game extremely fun from start to finish and enjoy the story. I see what they were trying to go for in this game, but it just did not hit the mark. For me, it's a one and done.

And the fact that naughty dog make us play a character we are taught to hate then empathise them was a very risky choice but it definitely worked very well. I could go into it more but I can't be arsed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who has played the first game many times over, it's truly heartbreaking to see this game do what it did. It took everything that the first game was good at and s*** on it.

I'll start with the pros, because despite being a trainwreck of a game there still are some. The game is visually STUNNING. I found myself at times stopping and looking around at the environments, marveling at such a beautifully crafted world. The facial animations, again, phenomenal. Voice acting? Top tier. The gameplay was something I found myself tolerating, if you've liked the first game's gameplay it's pretty much the same. Loot, craft, kill.

But oh boy, the cons. The problem with this game was not just the borderline nausea inducing storyline but the way it was handled too. Anything that anyone would have had a problem with was snuck into the second half of the game. Naughty Dog knew that if they told players upfront about what the story is NO ONE would have bought it. They kill a beloved character that they forced everything to think had a central part in the story IN THE FIRST TWO HOURS! When he dies you haven't even left the tutorial stage of the game. I don't think his death is bad, don't get me wrong. But they falsely advertised this game as a continuation OF HIS STORY. On top of that the decisions he made leading up to his death was just lazy writing. The character in question would have never gotten into the situation that resulted in his death had he been written the same way he was in the first game. AND THAT'S THE THEME OF THE GAME. All the characters we knew and grew to love all act so out of character here, they all make decisions they never would have. This game requires a lot of buy in from the player, you have to buy in this character would do this, you have to buy into the story and the second you start questioning ANYTHING you're sucked out of the charade that Naught Dog created. It's a load of lazy story writing. ON TOP OF THAT YOU SPEND HALF THE TIME PLAYING AS A CHARACTER YOU DONT CARE ABOUT HUNTING DOWN THOSE THAT YOU DO. It's just a load of bs. The reason I am so goddamn angry about it, is that they gave us a glimpse at what a real sequel could have been. The flashback in which Ellie and Joel went to the museum? That was eff'n perfect. Make that the whole game and it's a straight 10/10, it would've been perfect. Give me more of that game, not this revenge gore p0rn and Neil decided he wanted. When you play as Ellie, all you experience is the devolvement of a beloved character, and the story is clearly set up in a way that is: Ellie bad, Abby good. (My example for this is the dog. As Ellie you are FORCED, as in HARD SCRIPTED INTO THE GAME, WITH NO OTHER OPTIONS BUT TO KILL THE DOG. And immediately after you are playing as Abby and suddenly you're playing fetch with the dog. Once again: Ellie bad, Abby good.) I don't give two ***** about Abby Neil, I know you wanted to write in that scene where you got some, but damn this was not the way to go.

It's almost as if every single writer at Naughty Dog had their own idea as to what should happen, who the villain should be, who the hero should be, and they couldn't decide so they mashed it into one game and shoved it down the player's throats with Sony cheering them on.

Naughty Dog said that their goal for the game was to create an unpleasant and merciless experience, well the sure as heck did that and then some. This game is an excruciating experience, it's not fun at all. There are very little redeeming qualities and I'm ashamed to have spent money on this steaming pile of ****. If you really want to see the game for yourself, just watch a youtube play through of it, there's tons by now. Don't give this man, and his studio, your money and time, because they will take it and make a third game that is even worse. And don't listen to the Sony fanboys who will praise this game to high heavens because they really aren't hearing the other side. Is this game a 0/10? Absolutely not. But it sure as heck isn't 10/10. Even 6/10 would be too high in my opinion.

Do yourself a favor, don't buy it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Astounding and emotional. It seems one aspect which reviewers are very critical of is the supposed SJW agenda forced upon players by the devil Neil Druckmann. Having finished the game just once my reaction to this is that the inclusion of a same-sex relationship, 'transgender' child, a very muscular female 'antagonist', and the like never felt awkwardly incorporated.

Unfortunately, the above seems to be the most prevalent talking point regarding the story of The Last of Us Part II. The story explores revenge, among other themes, through Ellie and Abby, and while I do not feel that it was executed perfectly, it left a strong impression on me and has cemented itself as a masterpiece of video game storytelling alongside The Last of Us.

The gameplay will feel familiar to those who played the original. The extra movement options, animations, and the opportunities brought by these feel incredibly intuitive and make the PS3 classic seem a step behind in comparison.

    Regarding the pacing

Despite feeling qualified enough to leave a brief review I look forward to replaying the game, be it New Game Plus or otherwise,

    Pros
Very entertaining and engaging gameplay, good improvements from the first game
    Undeniably amazing graphics
    Great performances like always
    Great music
Good level design for the most part, once again good improvements from the first game.

    Cons
    Unlikeable characters
    Poor pacing
    Terrible story

The game and trailers try to use shock value to make the Joel death scene that much more painful to watch, using shock value tactics and intentionally changing what occurs in trailers further proves this. The issue is not the fact that Joel died it's how he died, by trusting a stranger and giving away sensitive information to then be brutally beaten. This completely goes against his character and feels very lazy. Furthermore, I can't begin to understand how the writers thought that players would feel compassion for a new character (Abby) that brutally beat a character from the first game that everyone loved (Joel) who just saved her life. Any attempt to try to create compassion for Abby was a failure and was very forced. There are many other glaring issues with Abby's part including the trip to the hospital to get medical supplies which was very drawn out and pointless, and her part in general being much longer than it had to be. The ending was atrocious, Ellie left her comfortable life with her girlfriend to track down Abby(again), to then fight her (again), and then let her go. After killing all of Abby's friends, losing friends of her own and just getting her fingers bitten off did Ellie have a cliche realization that " Revenge bad" " Forgiveness good" I'm sorry what? I would have much preferred for the game to have ended at the farm with Ellie, Dina and the baby.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game takes alot of risks which is great. Some people will be put off my Joel’s death but I think it was a good creative choice. However the pacing of the game makes it feel like it drags on. I especially have a problem with the way Abby’s story was handled. The order it was done in was very confusing at time going to flashbacks within flashbacks. Ultimately Abby’s story did seem like filler and by the time I got to play as Ellie again I just wanted the story to end already which is not a feeling you should get from any game. Expand

The ending of this game is so atrocious I can't believe they thought this was a good idea. There needed to be another game to make us connect with Abby and characters with her. Instead, everything felt rushed. I could barely connect to Ellie or her friends. They managed to ruin everything they possibly could. I don't trust IGN or Metacritic to rate any **** games now.

This game has the typical naughty dog gameplay. However, the storyline on Joel had destroyed the expectations of players. More ironically, the producer put a lot of political correctness factors in game, when there are direct racial discriminations to Asians in game at the same time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us is Joel and Ellie. They killed Joel in the first hour and the rest of the game is just an immensely long and boring spectacle of terrible character writing, one dimensional and predictable story telling, and condescending preaching down to the audience. I love The Last of Us. Thirty minutes in and I just wanted to get this game over with. I wish I hadn't wasted my money. Without Joel, The Last of Us isn't The Last of Us. I'll never buy Naughty Dog again. Expand

While the game looks stellar and the gameplay is decent, the story itself is a letdown. Maybe if the order of events was changed a bit the story could have been okay. Other than that I love the game.

This game is a **** technical masterpiece. This game is not a 0 and its not a 10 by any means. The story is not what we wanted and thats fine. The story is very bold and they had a lot of commitment when making this game. Some parts did not make sense but the gameplay is so damn satisfying. I mostly loved the story and the ending was amazing.

I give it a 4/10 for how it looks and the game play, I don't give it any higher is because of how they killed Joel and what happeneds to ellie and the fake trailers making us think Joel would be in the game more then he was they lied and that's messed up to lie to your fans! I also hate the story and how they make Joel dumber and same with Tommy you don't live 40 years in the zombie apocalypse not being careful and not being on guard they push the main character to his death and then tries to

The game makes you care about the character and their state of minds and does not allow you to simply think in black and white patterns of protagonists and antagonists. This game, like none ever before, makes you walk in your "enemies' shoes" to show you both sides of the coin. Ellie's vendetta takes you deep into her cracked and traumatised ego and lets you care for her. But the price to guide her through her walk of revenge is to enforce you an understanding that not all enemies are random murderers. They're troubled, cracked and traumatised beings, too. And just as Ellie cares deeply for Dina, the antagonists, too, are human beings and have someone they deeply care for and are human beings lashing out due to their grieve. This is a story so masterfully told it deserves Game of the Year and, check that, possibly Game of the Decade. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s saying something when the most enjoyable parts of the game are the 5 minutes of flashbacks with what SHOULD be the main characters. I couldn’t care less about the new characters they forced on us for half the game, and didn’t care if or when they died. Many of the events in the storyline just didn’t make sense, such as the countless instances where it seems like the characters are going to die, but then WOW! They somehow get spared! It was just an unsatisfying game, particularly the ending. No one waited 7 years to follow along characters we don’t care about after they immediately murdered Joel, one of the few that we actually care about, no matter his flaws or the “justification.” I understand the message they strived to send, but it was executed horribly. The only two things that save this game from a 1 or 2 rating are: the flashbacks of Joel and Ellie (particularly the dinosaur/space museum - absolute perfection), and the graphics/ gameplay. The story and its execution ruin this game. Sad, since the first is the best game I’ve ever played. Expand
