A very neat story that expands on the political and philosophical reflections introduced in the 1st game, adding depth and nuance to them.

The game suffers from pacing issues and the repetitiveness of its main gameplay loop

The game has good gameplay, graphics and details. However, it has the worst story and ending in any video game, and even in source of entertainment media.

I absolutely loved this game and I think Naughty Dog should be at least commended for trying out something quite different and more risky than most other story-driven games in recent times. I can definitely see why some people aren't happy with the direction that this game went, especially since it begins with the death of a beloved character, but don't dismiss it as "bad writing" just because your favorite character dies - the world of this game is unforgiving and relentless. Beyond that, I'm glad that this game isn't just a cut-and-dry revenge story. On the surface, this game seems like it's completely centered around hate, but I feel like the game is more a cautionary tale of obsession and the importance of forgiveness and letting go of the past, and I respect this more nuanced take that the studio had decided to go with. Yes, it would've been satisfying to have killed Abby at the end, but that would have undermined the entire point of the game: that revenge won't undo the deeds of the past, and that the best way to deal with loss is not to dwell on it but to move on. Besides the story, this has some of the best music, acting and graphics of any PlayStation game to date. The gameplay's pretty smooth and it's solid as a stealth/action game. However, my biggest gripe with the game is probably through it's pacing - Ellie's first 3 days in Seattle I'm okay with, but Abby's part (especially day 1) felt like it was dragging on a little bit since it was jarring how all the momentum that had built up to the conclusion of Ellie's day 3 was just suddenly lost. Otherwise, this is a great, emotional journey that I would recommend any Last of Us 1 fan to at least experience with an open mind. Regarding the hate for the game, there is definitely some valid criticism, but I wouldn't blindly base my opinion on the game based on story beats without any context or based on what other people online say about it. And that goes for both sides. Expand

Honestly, I had a lot of fun playing through the campaign, I enjoyed the gameplay and the detail that was put into the game, but unfortunately I don't know how to feel about the end of the story as it left me with a lot of conflicted emotions that I can't seem to understand. I do believe it is a good game, but many things hold it back at times, Abby is not a character anyone wants to see in a game as she serves no purpose other than for story, it is very difficult to relate to her becuase the way she went about things didn't seem to be fair. The game had a lot of potential, but unfortunately it didn't reach the same level of greatness as the first game. Expand

Give it 1 week and buy it for $5 game basket at Walmart. The graphics were great don’t get me wrong, the story however was god awful. I get killing Joel randomly to show that he wasn’t a god, but to have Ellie turn the other cheek after killing hundreds of people after she gets a chance for revenge? Terribly and sloppy writing. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved the first game and I was expecting a great story to continue the saga. Unfortunately this is not the case. Don't get me wrong, the game has its great moments, tension, suspense, horror and lost if action. The decision to get rid of one of the main characters so early in the game I believe is wrong. Anyway is enjoyable and a little bit too long but is still solid game, graphics are amazing. I don't understand the hate from conservative people regarding the "agenda" that Naughty dog would be implementing or taking part of? Some people are gay, get over it folks. Expand

The game is almost a complete waste of money the good bits graphics and music (by now most games should be topping 8 or 9 for music scores). The bad bits game-play hasn’t moved on in 7 years, the amount of time where you don’t really do much and the story which is more like fan fiction. Thank god I borrowed it rather then paid for it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was so excited for this game, even with all the leaks; but I managed to ignore the leaks.... i wish I hadn't. I would have saved eighty bucks and a load of disappointment. Unlike the first game, this one made very little sense. I have no complaints about the gameplay; it built on the first one very well. I loved the parts with Ellie, Joel, Dina, Jesse.... but aside from that? Everything was a dumpster fire. Let's starts with the big one: Joel's death. I was not surprised by his death or upset about the gore, even though I questioned the logic of having Joel, a man who can sense an ambush from a mile away, mindlessly falling into Abby's simple minded trap. But I can live with that; no, what I don't understand is the structure of this. They try to make us hate Abby by having her brutally kill Joel, they have Ellie slaughter hundreds of people to get our revenge, and then....not take her revenge because of a brief memory of Joel? If they wanted us to want to forgo revenge, they had to do better than that.

And then after making us hate Abby, they try to make us sympathetic by forcing us to play as her and making hamfisted attempts to get us to sympathize with her. Sorry, Abby, I don't care that your dad is dead, because the game didn't me care about him! I don't care that you lost him because I don't care about you. If they wanted this narrative to be successful, the structure should have been overhauled-- things should have started from Abby's perspective so we grew to love and sympathize with her loss and plight. We should have had with her at the beginning, a taste of what we had in the first tlou with Ellie and Joel. But she has no development, and we're expected to feel terrible for her. Sorry, I don't. There's no bond between Abby and the player, and over the course of her narrative, all you can think of is how **** forced everything feels, and how desperate naughty dog is to get you to like her, like an ugly guy at prom. They give her cooler weapons , they make her nice to dogs, they make you watch a yak-inducing sex scene, they make her basically be Joel with less self awareness and endless amounts of unacknowledged hypocrisy. They make Ellie out of character so that you sympathize with her less--insulting Dina and calling her a burden--kicking a dog's corpse and saying 'stupid dogs'. The first reaction I can understand because of stress, but the second? What the **** were you thinking, ND? She straight up wouldn't do that, and your attempts to villainous her are idiotic.

This game gets a 1 instead of a zero because I loved the gameplay....but I'm so unbelievably disappointed i waited seven years for this nonsensical narrative.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story in this game is absolutely terrible. The gameplay is really annoying too, why does dodging basically never work? Melee combat is SO broken you can't dodge attacks and when you attack they block 90% of the time. And you don't put your arm around character's anymore when you're both using the same cover, in fact it pushes you away from cover and often gets you spotted. They rush everything in this game (even though it's long. I beat it in about 28-30 hours and it was a chore)and it doesn't carry any emotion like in the first one, they just go for shock value at the cost of character development. And don't even get me started on how broken the fight against Ellie in the theater is. It feels like they went " the first game was a masterpiece, how can we take that world and its character's and ruin it in every way just to piss off everyone who loves it". I avoided the trailers and reviews and everything else about this game so I could experience it for myself in all its glory, except it has none. This game feels like a slap in the face by naughty dog while they are laughing about it. Expand

I wanted to save my judgement after I finished the whole game and man it was a disappointment. I gave it like 4/10 because of all the handwork people have put in graphic or game play wise. But man I didn't come to Last of Us for that I came for the story, build on from the part 1. I don't know if the devs or director are trying to be different just cause they wanna be different but man there are so many points in the game so unnecessary doesn't build anything from the part 1. It makes sense when director and the writer for part 1 left, which now I feel like they shouldn't even made part 2 better they left the series when part 1 ended. I dont even wanna start talking about Joel, who was our avatar through out the first part, I didn't even get to play him like wtf, we knew he was gonna die but killing him in unbelievable **** way ,by a **** character named abby. Man whoever leaked the plot good cause spending 60 dollars during this pandemic on this **** writing is not worth it. Main thing "Cycle of revenge isn't it a horrible thing" man wtf no **** but its a game goddamn it. We didn't see more of Issac or the scar group. The music, the gameplay and the atmosphere are all great, but I just don't feel the story. I can see what they where trying to do with playing Abby to sympathies with her, but it's doesn't click with me. And the pacing is just off putting. Also the ending and the last flashback seemed weird, Ellie had a family, a home and everything seemed fine, but then Tommy comes out of nowhere to have Ellie kill Abby. Which she doesn't do, I know they want her break the ''cycle of revenge'', but it would have been better if she killed and gets back home, the same ending is happening and she realizes that it didn't fulfill her. In a way the ending is just that but it would have filled the players that didn't like Abby with satisfaction, and the players that like her would have been broken like the game wants the player to feel as it seems. Also the Joel Cutscene, she can forgive Abby but doesn't forgive Joel, I can see why but I just feels so rushed in the End. Anyway I would have liked a totally different story to begin with, maybe where they explore Ellies Immunity or maybe just a game where Abby is played with no Joel and Ellie. But that's just my Opinion, not a fact.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is going to be separated into two parts, the first being my own personal opinion to the game and the second part my reaction and thoughts to what people have been saying about the game.
I am far from completing this game hence why i have given it an 8. So far impressed is not even the word i would use to describe this game, it exceeded graphical expectations that i did not know could be maintained on a console of this generation and its character development was fantastic with how quickly I fell in love with new characters such as Jesse and even more with old characters such as Maria in the short amount of time i saw her. Managing to avoid the leaks Joel’s death was a complete shock to the system that made me feel the same amount of anger that Ellie did, after spending the whole of the first game becoming the character that you play, as well as Dina’s pregnancy reveal throwing a whole other obstacle into the revenge story. Going into the game i had high hopes, however as time drew closer to the release i became concerned that we would have a repeat layout of the first game being, we have a story that surrounds Ellie’s immunity to the fungal virus and we have to go on a country wide quest to find someone who can help, or something along those lines. Although, I was pleasantly surprised that instead of forcing me though a few states that were full of clickers, runners and bloaters we went straight to Seattle and the game takes place here for it’s majority. When it comes to runners and clickers the new types of “zombies” were very refreshing and added a whole other layer of strategy to the game, similarly had felt the same excitement for areas where you’re opposition was both living and “dead”. So overall, this game has been a fantastic experience so far and it’s inclusion of LGBT expression from Dina and Ellie, to a pride filled book store in the first day of Seattle has been especially refreshing as it is not shoving it down your throat it is making them seem like a real couple no matter the gender they act as anyone else would, as well as discrete mentions of religion and other less talked about topics in video games.
A key issue that i have had with the negative reviews of this game is people who have put a review out on the day that they received this game saying they hated it from beginning to end, this game, if played through with proper exploration and is not rushed through is around 30 hours of gameplay, that tells me that the people who have written reviews for this game on the day of release have not taken time to appreciate this game and have missed heartwarming parts of the story that develop the characters a little more, such as Ellie’s cover of Take On Me in the music shop and Ellie and Dina’s conversation of growing old and living life to the fullest in a farmhouse with pets. A game like this is not to be rushed otherwise key points that helped to develop these so called ‘bland’ characters will be missed and will cause you to think this. Also many people seem to have an issue of its portrayal of a lesbian couple and well if you are so disgusted at the sight of two women who are in love kissing on camera then you are growing up in the wrong era because this kind of development in gaming should have happened long before now. Thirdly, many people disliked the game before even properly starting it after 3 hours in and Joel’s death happens people were furious with ‘trashy writing’ and a ‘rushed narrative’ however you have to looked at what Naughty Dog wanted for this game. They wanted a revenge story that the player could relate to so killing off Dina would feel underwhelming and you would not be able to sympathise with Ellie as well as copying the recipe from the first one that worked so well which was killing off Sarah I the first 20-30 minutes, or alternatively if they would have killed Joel off say 10 hours into the game it would have felt dragged out for me. Something i have noticed a lot of people mention is how it is uncharacteristic of Joel to trust someone as quickly as he did with Abby however, look at what we know, he as lived in a perfectly secure and welcoming civilisation wth Maria and Tommy, over those 4 years he has had to worry about outside threats less and less and has begun to see the good in people, therefore he is likely to have gone very soft over these many years, another way to look at it is that he had no other options at the time, they were being chased by a horde and was told of a secure location that according to his response to it, he knew and had likely been to before, so considering his options his judgement was possibly clouded. Overall, I think there is unnecessary backlash, however this has allowed me to appreciate the game even more and look at it from different perspectives

How many narrow passages can I crawl through before I realize there is always going to be a zombie or person who wants to murder me on the other side? Gameplay was repetitive. Jump some ledges, encounter some bad humans, go in a building and fight zombies. Search for loot. Repeat for 20 hours.

The story, well, not what I wanted, but it was also a jumbled mess that really wanted to convey something to all of us. I don’t think it succeeded at accomplishing that goal, whatever it was.

The writing is off at some parts and they do things so out of character for the characters we love. Its such a disappointment your better off not playing it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The set pieces and overall improvements over the first game are amazing. You can see what hard work, dedication and a toxic work environment by a triple A developer can produce. Having said that, the overall narrative and deceptive marketing truly negates the potential of this “masterpiece.” This really could of been something special. The sloppy writing, forced plot devices and contradictory character interactions spoiled the entire experience for me. It’s fine if you wanted to shock the audience, but instead this game pulls predictable “violence begets violence” themes with no resolution in the end. Ancillary characters died at the drop of a hat, while main characters only suffer emotional scaring. There is no real lesson here besides “don’t start something you can’t finish” and that unfinished business is the game’s own story quality. Hopefully this will be a lesson as to what really is important to storytelling and what lying to a loyal consumer base gets you. Expand

While I can understand where they may be coming from, I feel like I can't logically come to the same conclusion.

The story was really good and really well done and instead of trying to rehash the same story it tried something new that impacted you afterwards.

I think if many additions that many people dislike were taken out, it would be a lesser game. They are vital to the story being as good and impactful as it was, and allowed for the gameplay to be deeper and more unique compared to the previous game.

All in all, while the story may be different, it's amazing and just as good as the first (if not better). And the gameplay is incredibly fun and expands well on the groundwork laid in The Last of Us.

Its exhausting to play, because you put so much mental and emotional energy into each story and combat sequence, but you cant put the game down. It is an enthralling, incredible experience and work of art, and one of the best games ever made.

TLOU2 presents a storyline very different but yet extremely similiar to the first game, the game has gotten alot of hate because of ABBY the person who killed joel (main character in a horrific way, people have the problem of being way too soft, this game is unlike any other game ive ever played, the game has so many emotions entitled to it, the game has become so incredibly realistic not in the graphics, but in character behavior and emotion, it shows the frustration of the characters it shows a type of format wich goes with two sides of two characters, 1 evil, 1 good, but as you go on it shows tje humanity and the similarities between the characters, alot of reviewers and fans wanted a game filled with happiness of where u see joel and ellie roaming the USA in such a progressive and fun chill way, but yet aggressive, in TLOU2 its depressibg, the game shows such great writing that it really shows the lack of quality of games these days, in the entire decade only 4 games have stood out to be the best, TLOU, GOW, RDR2 and TLOU2, this game shows such emotion that its hard to believe that this is a video game, the atmosphere, the graphics
the infinite ways to approach a situation, the AI is incredibly unpredictable wich gives you this alive type of feeling, the combat is incredibly realistic showing a real punch, not an incredible jab evrey time u press the pucnh button, the blood that comes out of your enemies that u just slaughtered feels like you actually killed someone, the game is so good i felt like i was in the game, i forgot i was even playing sometimes, so many reviewers keep saying this game is good for some people wich it is, for quality reviewist, it dosent feel like a bland game like i anticipated it would be, its incredibly well written, the game shows real and depressing emotions wich ive never seen before ecxept in the first game, there are numerous flaws but they are minor, the jump button had potential, the puzzles werent good but they werent bad either (ropes felt clonky), the gun play was a pretty normal, it was functional, it flet like a teen was holding the gun, some of the time frames werent coordinated and felt very idiotic but they werent terrible, and some of the characters get introduced 5 hours after you kill them with a pipe, wich feels just lazy but not terrible still, they couldve added a special move where u press 4 different buttons one after another to make a cool kick or something like that, the games hate comes from the main character dying and that you have to play as his killer, unlike other people i had an opened mind even though i fell in love with joel in first game ( ive played TLOU1 about 29 times just because it was so good and im already starting a new walkthrough on the 2nd game) people arent very appreciative of abby and dont try to understand why she did it, hopefully more people give it a second try and realise how good it is, and try to enjoy the game from a more easy and open perspective instead of crying because joel died, it feels like alot of the critics didnt even play the game, i can go on and on defending the game while u could just give it a 2nd try like we did with the 1st game, my rating is a 9.3 it dosent deserve the 0.7 because of the easily fixable flaws.

A few improvements and functions were implemented into the game, while others were discarded or downgraded (maybe).

The mechanics in comparison with the first game was a good improvement plus the ambient, locations, global illumination, graphics, sounds, etc.

And since a game is not only composed by the story but also by many aspects, I will be honest. Considering this game tell us a concept about a post-apocalyptic world, I was expecting that the story would not do that well at part II.

For this reason I remove 2 whole points. The story is neither bad nor good, it is as dark and heavy as a horror story (even worse). It describes the reality of human beings living in a post-apocalyptic world and learning with their mistakes, and paying for their acts (or sins).

The characters were also very "reworked" (Joel becomes sensitive and inattentive in comparison with the first game, and other new characters comes from nowhere, maybe not precisely seen on the first game).

It's clear that this game tells us a concept of a world in critical situations, but this was not related in exact at the first game, which made me feel very sad for the Part II (considering part I was also sad from the start to the end).

I was aware of all these points and can understand the bad reviews about the story (which is not a scripted story but a concept), but to be honest, the game is not just the story.

And even if it was because of the story that the game received positive reviews, people must know that this is a negative part of the game (in my case -2 points) and not the whole. The game did not innovate a lot in comparison with the first game, but it followed a good position.

I forgot to mention that from the -2 points of my review, one was considering the unclear launch and confusing organization of the game. The company needs to improve this, and I mean by a LOT, literally!

The first game is scored 10 for me and I recommend it. Now part II... if you like the "script" about Ellie and Joel, consider skipping this game and have fun with TL OU part I and its "DL Cs", because they are quite good.

Now if you don't care about the concept of this game, I would think twice, before playing, because this game has a very distorted and dark (even violent) story. And other than that, mechanics are not deep explored, just a few minorities were implemented.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us 2 in my opinion is a fantastic game. It has gotten a lot of unnecessary hate because of story events that the majority of people don’t like. People are praising Joel for what he’s done while in reality he’s caused the most deaths by not letting the Fireflies make the cure. His death from the hands of WLF is harsh but justified in their world. We play as Abby and Ellie in the game and people say it does nothing because they don’t like Abby. However, the Abby’s side of the story did so much and put into perspective that both sides of this fight view themselves as the good guys (Ellie trying to avenge Joel’s death and Abby avenging her dads and countless other deaths because of Joel). Also, another complaint that I’ve seen from people is that Abby doesn’t die in the end. However, this ending shows the growth of Ellie the most. While she’s drowning Abby, she flashes back to a scene where Ellie and Joel talking about what happened in the ending of tlou 1. At the end of this scene, Ellie says that she will forgive Joel for what he did and she realizes while drowning Abby that she has to do the same for her. For the gameplay, it’s not as bad as people say it is. The stealth aspect is some of my favorite and gun play feels authentic. Level design does feel off as it blocks you off with small foliage (bushes, branches, etc) but that’s not enough to make me hate the gameplay. Overall, I think the game is fantastic and is receiving a lot of unnecessary hate due to two events that are very good once they’re understood. Expand

Facial expressions, character animations are incredible - this should be standard across all AAA games. In general graphic, while I'm realizing it still runs on 7 years old crappy HW, is astonishing. Combat flow is awesome - remember gameplay trailer from E3 2018 when most of us were saying: "yes, nice rendered animation sequences, no way it could be actual gameplay, it's too smooth"? Well, it's true. That was actual gameplay (everything you saw in that gameplay trailer is really in the game and prefectly working). Yes AI is sometimes not so great especially in the stealth phase but nothing terrible and it is still beter than AI in any another game. And music? As in the first game is awesome as well.

Locations are also well designed, when you decide to explore every corner then you will reveal many little stories in this sad postapocalyptic world. So now I'm getting to the point that despite many happy moments or awesome scenes (which you will not want to leave) this game is in general very sad, very brutal and violent. So if you got problem with a lots of blood, knives in the neck, broken bones, broken necks, killing people/animals/zombies etc. then probably this game isn't for you and you should avoid it at any cost to keep your mental health safe.

Now about story. I was lucky that I avoided all the spoilers and leaks so I could fully enjoy the story and I must say it was very good story, every chapter was well-placed, every character decision understandable, my emotions were jumping from the absolute happinnes to the absolute saddness. And in the end I only was a little bit disapointed how the story ended but also at the same time I was feeling happy that it ended in that way.

One note: if you are new to The Last of Us then I really recommend to play the first game before Part II, even if the Part II in the end explains/reminds everything that was in the first game, only in this way you could be fully immersed by the story and fully hit by all the emotions.

    Well done Naughty Dog, 10/10.

There are spoilers below but I have tried to be vague when possible to prevent ruining it for anyone who hasn't finished it and/or has not read into the internet anti-hype. I broke this into two sections: story & gameplay. Story: I want to say the ending is actually fine and I'm not as mad about it as I thought I would be. The story hinges on a cliche revenge arc with Ellie out to spill blood to reach a sense of closure. Half the game you play as Abby, the source of Ellie's anger. At first I was frustrated about this but it ended up being okay, I enjoyed seeing both sides of a story. As things progress you become angrier and angrier at certain characters and the writing attempts to fill you with confusing hate: "I hate Abby and I want her to die but now I'm starting to understand and feel for her. But she still deserves it." it's unorthodox which makes the player uncomfortable. That's intentional. You experience stories and letters that show the humanity of those you may (or may not) kill to progress the storyline. Again, this makes you feel conflicted and guilty (for some players) but in certain situations its a necessary evil for survival. That's the universe they've created, people do awful things on both sides. Upon completing the game you'll perhaps come to a lack of closure as many have. However, in my interpretation justice was served to a degree with the suffering and pain brought upon the antagonist (but is Abby an antagonist?). However you want to perceive it, it's done and that's what we received. All in all, the story is fine. It's not far from a cookie cutter revenge story without the revenge but at least it's different. Gameplay: It's beautiful, nearly flawless and I never caught any significant bugs except one instance where I fired a gun and the art from the flash stayed on the gun the rest of the level. Not game breaking but a little silly. That being said, it's realistic and there isn't a lot of variety. You do the same thing every single fight. Sneak around and slit everyone's throat or aggro them and let them come at you one at a time and kill them with melee weapons (ammo isn't exactly easy to come by and the AI behavior of human enemies is pretty predictable). Every time. Same thing. I got so frustrated I just started sprinting through battles to proceed. Combat against infected was more enjoyable. The behavior of the infected (especially stalkers) was much more diverse and enjoyable but it still got very repetitive over time. I truly wish I enjoyed the combat more.

Considering the semi disappointing story (although not quite as weak as the internet made it seem) and the repetitive slave like combat (slave like in the sense you don't really have much freedom to experiment) but the beautiful imagery and recreation of these real places in the US, I'd give it a realistic 6 out of 10. It's a fine game, not great, won't ever play it again. Moving on with my life.

This game broke my heart more than once, but what makes me even more heartbroken is that the game, naughty dog and especially neil druckmann receive so much undeserved hate from "fans". You don't have to like the games story or how it ends (I did neither), but still have to recognize this masterpiece and what it does to you...

Joel was more carefree, yes. But just remember he was living in a peaceful community for the past years with his brother and Ellie. The coffee exchange and Ellie’s birthday gift also implies that he is really more at ease and trusting people again (and taking risks). Ellie quest was not only revenge, she was trying to find a way to forgive Joel. It is clear that she was lost (after killing Mel and Owen she realizes that she went too far). Anyway, although Joel died, I assume he died happy because of what Ellie said. And just a small detail, when Ellie went to talk to him, he was playing the same song as when Ellie kissed Dina at the dance. I just can’t dislike this game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fantastic game. The gameplay is much sharper than original, really fun to play. Probably the best looking game on the PS4. The story (which is the most important part) is testing, dark and will invoke genuine postive and negative emotion. Overall a really traunatic experience (in a good way) playing this game . Side note: there really is no "agenda" - just play it for yourself. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I honestly think it’s a great game but in some parts it loses me but I think the gameplay is great never repetitive and also brutal. Joels death gave me a reason to kill the enemies. The game is amazing but in some parts it’s bad but good enough to buy. Expand

This game makes me feel that vengeance is not the solution, and at the end of the day we are all humans.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
