This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last Of Us 2 is, in my opinion, getting unfair amounts of hate for the story. Some people are really stubborn about hating Abby, but they're missing the point of the game. I'd give the game an 8 out of 10, but they pulled a bait and switch with Jesse and Joel in the trailer. Otherwise, I think this is a great successor to the first game. The game represents LGBT characters in a way that doesn't demonise or stereotype them. It isn't forced down your throat either. Trans people exist. Gay people exist. The game shows that quite well. People who are, understandably, upset about the death of Joel need to understand one thing: Joel was a villain. That doesn't mean he isn't likeable, but he is essentially a serial killer. He massacred an entire building's worth of innocent people to save one person's life, all so he could selfishly have the daughter he lost. That makes him human. Just like how Abby murdered Joel in revenge. That makes them human. Naughty Dog made some interesting choices with the story. I believe that the Abby playthrough should have come first and then have her murder Joel, rather than have her kill Joel, have Ellie go after her in revenge, and have them kill Jesse too. The story is realistic. If I was in Abby's position I 100% would do the exact same thing. A lot of people would. Abby is a likeable character, it's just a shame ND decided to give them such an awful first impression. Graphics: 10/10

When I first played as Abby after she killed Joel I killed her by letting clickers bite her, I jumped off buildings etc. I did not want to play as her. But By the end I didn't want Ellie to drown her. I really didn't know how to feel a lot of the game but I loved what I played. There were several unforgettable moments in this game. this is a must play! Expand

Expand

Loved it, great story about where hate can lead you, it follows the first game theme by being another story about no being able to get over a loved one death but while the first game was about avoiding to feel that loss ever again no matter the cost, the second one is about the hatred, revenge what it will cost to pursuit it.

Seeing as there are so many negative comments on here bashing this game on so many different levels, I want to give a positive rating and positive feedback as I have played and beaten the game and am now on my second play through. I am an avid gamer, I have not done a critique of any game but I feel this is necessary. The last of us part 2 is a great game, no matter what other people say. You cannot, and I cannot emphasize this enough, CANNOT CRITIQUE A GAME YOU HAVE NOT PLAYED. All of the comments of people who saw spoilers of the games story and immediately said it was the worst thing ever and that Naughtydog has fallen short of what they were thought to be able to achieve should be ashamed of themselves. Everyone was so ready to finally get a conclusive story to The last of us after 7 long years but when it comes down to getting what you think you want, it just doesn’t live up to expectations. This is not my opinion however. I quite enjoyed part 2. I avoided spoiling the game for myself and only ever really saw the cinematic trailer, the one with Lotte Kestner’s cover of True Faith, and that sold me. I had preordered the game prior to this because I fell in love with The last of us since the originals release. I played through the game over the corse of 3 days with my girlfriend watching as I went through the chapters and uncovered the story of what was going to happen to Ellie and Dina and Abby. We were both enticed by the story and it was hard to look away, even when Joel was killed. It was heartbreaking. A beloved character murdered by a woman with her own plot for revenge on what happened to her father. (This also goes along with the people who didn’t play the game not knowing why he was murdered and just wanted to make ND out for being a horrible company that kills off main characters for no reason what so ever. Not the case and you would know that if you’d played the game and got at least 2/3 the way through the game.) Following Ellie through Seattle was a trip. The visuals were stunning, the sound design amazing, the score added to the feel of being in a place that had been taken over by nature for the past 25 years, it was all fantastic. I truly had no downside to this game (aside from being emotionally distraught/angry that Joel was killed in the first hour and a half into the game) until about halfway through the game when the story flips to Abby’s point of view. Now I get why this was, to get more of the story and pan out the run time of the game. I’m not saying it was a bad thing, it just put a nasty knot in my stomach to play as her for 4-6 hours and at the end of it beat up Ellie. It didn’t sit right. But then it donned on me. With the story that was given to me, it made me apathetic towards Abby and made me feel as if she wasn’t such a bad person. Though in a story like this I guess there are no good guys. I will not spoil the ending act though I feel most of the people on here have already seen it on YouTube or elsewhere on the internet. I will leave you with this statement: Do not be a sheep, conjure your own opinions after full completion of a topic. If you do not know, do not open your mouth, you risk sounding like a belligerent moron at the sake of my brain cells killing them selves from reading your horrendous and illegitimate reviews. (And for those who said they falsely advertised the game with Joel looking different in the trailers: Yeah, companies do that. Hell, they did the same thing with the first game but the opposite, they said you wouldn’t be able to play as Ellie but in the 3rd act you start as Ellie. Grow up people. Don’t bandwagon something before you’ve even given it a shot. You’re the reason companies struggle to make content, because you “don’t like how it turned out”. Well boohoo, they didn’t spend 5 years making this game for you to say it was **** If you spent 5 years on anything and the first thing people said about it was that it was bad, you wouldn’t wanna do it again would you? I like Naughtydog and the content they provide if you don’t, don’t say anything and find a different game to play. Good day. ) Expand

It may have been a more positive outcome if the sequence of events was re-organized in a way that we get to understand what was the driving force of the antagonist in doing his/her actions rather than just bluntly forcing it on the first portion of the game.

I dont even have a PS pro. What ND may end up doing with the ps5 will be mind boggling. The cutscenes are superbly acted and the art direction and atmosphere is possible the best any videogame has produced. The core gameplay is like the first but simply refined and stretched deeper in various ways to feel fresh. Theres alot that just feels satisying here from on the fly crafting, crunchy headshots from crafted silencers, traversal to even simple things to breaking glass. I spent ages marvelling at just how well the breaking glass mechanic was implemented.

I like you, was worried it may be a propoganda piece for leftist identity politics, but i gotta say the "anti- woke" have it completley wrong this time around. I think the "event" have them triggered that this game is anti "white-men". Being a white man I honestly have no clue where this.coming from other than the "event" surrounds a "white male" and the game for the most part has you controlling a "not white male". Judge for yourself is all im saying. Tonally i didnt disagree with any story choices, remember this is the series after all that brutally gunned down a 10 year old girl in its opening act. Why is that act in the "event" less "brutal" then what happens at the start? Mob mentality is really mindwashing alot of already angry young men into think they are being personally attacked, when in truth we should be holding up what is essentially free speech. Naughty Dog as is their American right is free to tell whatever story they like. We as gamers should encourage companies to explore places that have never been explored before. Pushing the medium forward and providing us with options to choose whether we want to play or not. I honestly felt if i just listened to all the sheep i would of missed out on what i thought was a deep, immersive, different and profound experience that i wouldve missed if i had simply not chosen to judge it for myself.

And the only way we can really progress is by putting an end to the severe lack of empathy that is driving all of the hate filled conversations and decisions that are plaguing our lives. Obviously, this is not a lesson that many of us are ready to learn, as we’ve grown to be addicted to and driven by that hate. Now as the audience, so many people are showing that they’re incapable of empathy, or of recognizing growth or redemption in a video game character. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. My real score is a 3 but metacritic are literally censoring negative reviews because they're shills. The atmosphere, graphics, gameplay, music and voice acting in this game are all pretty good but the story’s undoubtedly the most important aspect of games like this and the story basically just screeches “ReVeNGe bAd” for 25+ hours with absolutely no pay off in the finale. You don’t even get revenge on the character who violently and brutally ejects Joel from the series for good and on top of that you're forced to play as that character for 10 hours. Dog S*** idea. Also for Ellie to suddenly have a change of heart and let Abby live after everything she goes through, everything she loses, and everyone she's killed to get to that point was such a stupid and unsatisfying "conclusion". Honestly world war 2 was a better sequel as the villain actually f***ing died at the end. Expand

After playing through the game, and watching a full playthrough, discussing it with peers, I’ve come to the conclusion the story was not thought out. The gameplay is awesome. Seriously, the realistic blood splatter, the incredibly detailed gore, body deconstruction, and environmental destruction all show that good money was spent on the gameplay. But honestly, who plays The Last Of Us(TLOU) for the gameplay? I don’t pick up Doom Eternal or Mortal Combat thinking “Man I can’t wait to be enthralled in a gripping story!” the same way I don’t pick up The Wolf Among Us for the gameplay. The story was patchwork at best, a completely unpleasant game with terrible pacing at worst. It seems like Abby’s story was added in as an afterthought, and the order of events shows that. The developer clearly wants us to empathize with this character they plucked out of a Gears of War game (the MoCap body is literally a woman openly using steroids). Her physique aside - which admittedly breaks immersion for some reason – I HATED her for mercilessly beating one of the industries most loved characters right in front of Ellie who you still probably care about from the first game 7 years ago. How can you expect us to empathize with someone when you’ve started their interaction with the player from such a low? The order should have been, introduce Abby, and trick the player into thinking TLOU isn’t about Joel and Ellie anymore. Then maybe I would have liked any of her gang of poorly written friends. Seriously, they have the Spanish guy the dumbest lines ranging from “I just want to drink and watch Anime” to eluding to lewd acts with every woman on their base. That said, Owen and Mel were exceptions as at least they called Abby out on her nonsense for being a garbage person, but I suspect this was just me needed SOME catharsis and wanted to see someone get back at her. Half-baked character’s aside, then after you convince us to like Abby after showing her saving Lev(Lily?) or her flashback with her dad or SOMETHING likable, not a sex scene for cheap shock value, then surprise us with Joel’s murder.

I will never forget the moment in the first game when Henry shot himself, or when Ellie as a child defeated a dangerous cannibal group ON HER OWN and had an emotional breakdown as Joel comforted her, or the last scene in the game where she makes Joel swear to her that what he said is true and the WAVE of emotions evoked from the game-ending right thereafter she hears his lie. I can’t even remember the Spanish guy’s name, or the transgender kid’s twin sister’s name, why Demi? Deana? likes Ellie other than she is ALSO into girls. TLDR: The story in this game was mediocre, poorly structured, too fast-paced, and clearly rewritten too many times with late revisions to form any semblance of an emotional connection that the first game had.

Creators made some bold decisions, that some players didn't like just because that's not what they've expected. But, if you read and watch all the interview's that Neil and Halley gave, you will understand that they had this idea about the violence, cruelty and the consequences of your actions, which they drew through all the game from the beginning to the end. And yeah, some event's were rough and hard to accept, but they were needed for this idea, for the character's motivation and in order to move the story and they absolutely fit the world that they've created.
Some people doubted the ending of the first part, the decision Joel's made, whether it was right to save one life, but not the lives of many. So now we just have the consequences of this decision. So what's the problem? What did you expect? Another sunset happy ending?

I'm a huge fan of the first game and I'm totally on with how they've decided to continue the story. I don't agree with every decision they've made, there are some moment's that in my opinion are not necessary for the story, but anyway I've enjoyed playing this game, how it's ended and the idea that the writers wanted to convey.

I see so many reviews where people say that they've played a few hours and want their money back because the story is trash. Really? Come on people! You haven't even finished the game to understand it and already criticize it.
I truly hope that the majority won't pay attention to the criticism and somebody's unfulfilled dreams and will play the game to have their own opinion.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall these are my thoughts after beating the game:
When I first opened last of us part 2 I expected the game to be a masterpiece. I expected it to continue Joel and Ellie's story and to have an emotional ride.
After 2 hours of playing the game I realized that what I was expecting is not gonna happen.
At first, I felt betrayed. I stopped playing the game and thought to myself that I cant keep playing after what they did to Joel, but after a while I continued.
Even that I wanted the story to be different I had a lot of fun playing the game. The gameplay is great, the graphics are awesome and the soundtrack is just amazing.
The only issues that I had with the game is the pacing and the order of events that they decided to go with.
When the second half of the game began I didn't want to play as Abby but I knew the reason for it. The reason was that they showed Abby killing Joel before they showed her backstory so the only thing that I had in mind is just to speedrun her section of the game. If they have changed some of the scenes order I think I would have cared a bit.
About the ending I was pissed
But after my second playthrough I understood the meaning behind it and I think that was the right decision to go with.
8/10- bit disappointed because I expected a masterpiece but overall great game.

The game has beautiful graphics and the gameplay is good although very similar to the previous game. The story manages to make you hate the game so much that you love it, because many scenes are so raw and unexpected that at first glance I hated it, then I reasoned about what happened and I understood that few die as heroes especially in a post-apocalyptic world. I'm not saying you don't have to hate the game, it's understandable, but don't judge
bad a game just because it didn't go as you would have liked, nothing goes perfectly, not even in everyday life.

    Graphic: 9.8 / 10
    Gameplay: 8.5 / 10
    Story: 9.6 / 10

the game is definitely not 0/10 just because of two unexpected scenes.

But as I played more and more, those feelings of doubt quickly disappeared and I was finding myself fully immersed in the world, the characters and the story itself. The story is in general a bit worse than The Last of Us 1 but it's not as bad as people make it out to be. It's very enjoyable, the characters have depth and the environmental storytelling is as good, if not better than in the first game. I had high hopes when booting up the game for the first time and while they didn't fully get 100% achieved, I am in no way disappointed.

I mean, I'm not a resist or whatever, I'm completely OK if the girl has a big muscles and she is very strong physically (I mean c'mon she is a military and lives in a stadium). But there are too much of this trash in this game - transgender in this game was completely unnecessary. There were too much of this **** already - and when another LGBT character appeared - I got tired of this. But I detached from this thoughts and finished the game. And you know what, this game is good. I mean: this game has problems besides LGBT agenda.
And all main probrems is located in the Abby's storyline: her gameplay is nothing but Joel's from the original game with a few small changes, which makes it boring half of the time. I mean - I played original TLoU from the beginning to the end 5 times(including the highest possible difficulty) and looking at the same gameplay after 3 year from my last TLoU playthrough - is kinda disappointing The same about the Abby's storyline - sometimes it's boring, but I have to admit - it has a good and memorable moments.
My opinion is that game deserves better than a total resentment for LGBT agenda. This game has a good story(with problems, but still), a good gameplay, a plenty of details and awesome graphics and animations.

Most of the people who wrote a negative review probably had quit after Joel died.

Like seriously, TLOU 1 was one of my favorite games, i loved the story they told and the game was amazing. But after playing TLOU 2, this game definitely took the place of my favorite game. It is emotional, has nice gameplay and seriously i don't have to say something about the graphics, just wow.

Some people critic the "Character development" like what? You really didn't play the game right? Every character develops in their own way, and it is amazing. I never teared up more while playing a video game.

Don't take these negative critics serious.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. All whining about the story aside this was an enjoyable game. They improved the combat, the weapon options were more varied, added a couple new enemy types, and this should go without saying, but the graphics are stunning, I do not understand why being upset about the story legitimizes giving it such low scores as 3 or 0. This is by far not a bad game in any right, but yes I agree the story is poorly conceived and could have been taken back to the drawing boards. The way they killed Joel was poorly executed, especially if someone skipped the first game and just jumped into Part 2. I also think having the player switch off to Abby was a poor choice. My entire motivation through Ellie's initial journey to Seattle was to hunt down the people who killed Joel and get revenge. It takes that motivation and spits in your face when it turns over to controlling Abby. With this being said Abby somehow grew on me and I think gameplay wise she is a lot more fun. Her weapons are more badass, the hunting pistol was so fun for me to play with. I think my favorite thing they did was they improved the trophies for the game, the originals trophies were bad so seeing an improvement made me really happy. Adding the stalkers as an enemy type was genius. The first time meting them as Ellie was so tense. It delved straight into a survival horror feel so quick. Overall I really enjoyed the experience and if the story really affected you that bad I guess wait till its on sale if you haven't already purchased, but I think it well earned it's $60 price tag. There is tons of replay value, trophies to earn, and fun collectibles that are easy to miss. I rate it an 8.5, but I settled with 8 because the story was weak and Metacritic doesn't have decimals :/ Expand

Juegazo!

I just want to say, for everyone in the comments who said this game was anything lower than a 7 on this scale is jumping in the hate bandwagon. This game delivered on its promises, there is over 40 hours of game play 60 if its on hardest difficulty, people are angry because they killed Joel. Wtf did they expect? There has to be a big issue in any story and sometimes we can’t all win, there had to be loss and what greater loss than that? Imagine you’re Abby your father was murdered by some **** guy you have no connection to and you don’t know. You’d do the same in a world like that. People need to let go of the notion that every story has to accommodate what their idea of a “good story” is. Its tragic. Abby killed Joel in retaliation for Joel killing her father, Ellie killed all of her friends including a pregnant woman with an unborn child. There is blood for blood and both women are caught in a loop of revenge. Story development was good and you sympathize with Abby and Ellie because they both get a good amount of screen time. Its only fair you see abbys perspective because Ellie’s was all last game. Stop jumping on the hate wagon cuz ur favorite character died, grow the helm up. This story was emotionally charged and deeply disturbing on many levels and that’s what I love about naughty dog, they don’t back down. Complete masterpiece. I have it a 9 only because the story was great but the way it was presented was a bit of a mind **** that honestly could of been presented better. But the outcome was still incredible and I still cried and I felt 0 satisfaction in the end. Questions were answered but more questions came up and that’s how I like it. No because that’s stupid and in any other game that guy would just be another stepping stone for the hero to cross! I have a few things that are impossible to argue.

    ● You need to have huge eggs to set yourself the task: “Let's kill all the beloved hero, and then make everyone love the killer.”
    ● The second part at times deepens the problems of the first. This is a “true” sequel that contains all two parts.
    ● It was only the middle of the journey - one of the most difficult moments. “If we lived happily ever after” - this was not as intended.

The design of the game tries so hard to make you feel certain things or force you to see different points of view ultimately fails which is what turns most gamers away. The chemistry and bond between certain characters feels flat, awkward and unnatural again. Despite the things that went wrong in terms of the narrative, there's a lot of things the game does right that would wouldn't expect from other than Naughty Dog; graphics are stunning, many of my friends who are hardcore pc gamers say that this is one of the most beautiful looking games they've seen. AI is massively improved from the first. Level design is amazing. Sound effects and music is perfect. Combat has evolved massively from the first although can feel repetitive at times. While still a linear experience, areas are much broader and there's so much to see and explore that it can feel overwhelming at times. Like I said the game does a lot of things right as Naughty Dog typically are good at making games, however the narrative and pacing of the game really let it down particular with its anticlimax ending where it could of easily made up for past mistakes. It would be unfair to the devs who worked hard on this for so long and as I said putting the story aside this game is amazing but unfortunately falls short of that so therefore a 7/10 (average) is a perfectly fair score. Really really liked the gameplay and graphics. But for me, the soul for tlou has always been the story, the flow of the game and all the things that made tlou great in the first place. Therefore I have no choice but to leave a low score review here. Like many others have pointed out, the story is absolute garbage. To the point that there is no need of me to list all the things out, everybody else has always pointed those things out, you can just check out all the other reviews. It's a shame and sad to see what naughty dog has come to today. I will not be refunding the game, as a reminder that games that had a great part 1, it's equal might not be as good as the former was, don't jump onto the hype train so quickly. Expand

The game is beautiful and horrible and heartbreaking. If you thought the first game was bittersweet then this game should feel familiar. The gameplay is legitimately great, with awesome stealth mechanics, but the game's core is the emotional storytelling. I have no problem saying this is one of the best stories ever told, regardless of platform. I cried a lot.

Then to add hulk of a woman that kills Joel in the most stupidest way. Neil u ruined it. You thought reviews will be good after people start playing this **** huh , well u owe us all an apology and a full refund.

The story isn't interesting is made to intentionally annoy us or at least that's how I felt. The trailers are not showing the actual game. They hide Abby because they realize most people will hate her and they won't sell as much. Even though the sound and the graphics are awesome the immersion for me was completely ruined at least in the second half of the game because of the main character I had to play. Ellie's side of the story was interesting, Dina and Jesse were interesting characters but Abby, Manny, Owen and Lev were so annoying to me. Every bit of the second half was made just to show you both sides are grey and Abby isn't the bad guy, they even add Lev and Yara to create a similar relationship between the two as Ellie had with Joel in the first game but it just seemed forced. Lev messed up so many times and every time Yara gets punished first she looses a hand and then her life because of Lev's questionable decisions. Also Lev seemed so forced into the story just to embrace an agenda ND are constantly pushing. Same with Abby being so fit. They basically created Nadine from Uncharted 4 all over again. And they say they wanted to create a story where the main focus is how destructive revenge is. Fine but why our beloved characters Ellie and Joel have to loose everything while Abby and Lev are not punished at all? There is no sense of justice. And if they take the nihilistic approach it is again wrong because they are not punishing all sides equally and it felt as if they did it because Abby's side was the side with the agenda characters. In a game where the story is 90% of the whole game and the story is awful the rest doesn't even matter. To me this is a 0/10, I felt spat in the face by ND after I gave them 60$ and pre-ordered the game. They said "it's not as it seems" after the leaks were out. The story was even worst than the leaks showed. Expand

Honestly, this game is great. As a hardcore fan of the original Last of Us and someone who saw all of the leaks, let's just say I wasn't too thrilled with this game. But I still gave it a second chance and what can I say? Neil was right, context is everything. This game really makes you feel for every single character in the story whether good, or bad. But I still gave it a second chance and what can I say? Neil was right, context is everything. This game really makes you feel for every single character in the story whether good, or bad. I know a lot of outlets have been saying that the story is just too depressing and has no moments of levity, but I would be lying if I said that I didn't cry out of sheer happiness a few times. Although there were two story moments that I didn't agree with personally, I can see why they were in the game and I absolutely respect their inclusion. The ending too was something that I was hesitant of at first, but they even managed to pull that off while also giving it a much more understated feel then part one's ending. Now, onto everything that isn't story. The music in this game is fantastic, with Gustavo once again hitting the mark on every track (with unbroken being my personal favorite) while Mac Quayle is brought in to work on more combat centric pieces. And i must say, he does a wonderful job. If you were a fan of the gameplay of the first game (like myself) then you will love what they've done here. Both Ellie and Abby feel much better to control then Joel. With Ellie in particular feeling much more agile then any of the other characters. Ontop of that the weapons themselves feel somewhat improved (although they control quite similar to the first games), the upgrade system has been greatly expanded, with tonnes of new perks and paths to take. Plus as an added bonus companions can now actually aim, shoot people, and hide too. When in combat the game is something else entirely, you weave your way through increasingly bigger encounter maps with more and more enemies until, you inevitably get spotted. This is when it gets really interesting. I personally played the game on grounded which led to combat encounters being scary and adrenaline inducing. I can't even count how many times I would get out of combat and still feel my heart racing and adrenaline burning off. The combination of the combat music, gunplay, and enemy ai leads to something that is even more tense then the first game. With my personal favorite combat moment being whenever I tried to snipe someone with a bow. As the sound effects and vibrations of the controller really made it feel the tension in the bow string and like this thing i'm holding could snap any minute. So overall, I have this game a 9/10, great combat, (mostly) great story, but it does end up dragging on for a few more hours then it needed to. Expand

The game is absolutely beautiful, graphics are out of this world. I loved all the new characters and it hit through out the game, you'll see. The character development? great. The storyline? Great. The gameplay? Incredible. The movement, the feel, the combat, the enemies. Naughty Dog really brought it home with this one. New mechanics and play style that made the game feel new, but still in the same range of the old game. Expand

Giving it at 1 is being nice only reason why is because the gameplay was kinda smooth, the story felt forced, the script was definitely written by 21yr old tryin to hand in a essay the hour it's due, the credit show alot of people that worked on it. I bet no one criticized it at all and they just said yes that works. Perfect boss, your gonna make history boss, Shït like that. They took a fine age game and turned it into fools gold. The way they killed Joel was just for shock value. The supporting characters didn't even play a role but to either leave or die. And the Abby was okay it was different. But again the script was so badly made I didn't care about what they were saying. And to be honest playing it on the hardest difficulty wasn't even worth it No special achievement or anything Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
