    These reviews are garbage! I played the first game months ago and I played this game the weekend it came out. The graphics are amazing, characters are amazing, realism is amazing, story is amazing. it’s definitely not a game for close minded people.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The combat is probably the most decent part of the game. Shoot then melee, that kinda deal. Not bad, not groundbreaking but it works.
    The stealth is phoned in, it's obvious where you can and should use it and the enemy helps you with it. It's a slog.
    The problem comes with the pacing: it goes from boring nothing to intense action back to boring talking then more action. It's back and forth, there is no build-up. It doesn't feel like it's a quite replayable title, it is no Resident Evil 4, you may want to skip chapters entirely.
    The story is what it is, you know the deal, you heard the spoilers.
    The character they push on you is never at any point likable, and I'm not even sure if that was their point. It never feels like a deuteragonist or anti-hero, it just feels like an annoying boss character modded into the game as protagonist..
    I don't know who would in their right mind care for a sequel just to see what happens to her.
    They added the "Lev" angle to get you to like her, and as a "duo" mirror to Ellie and Dina, but while Lev is okay, Abby is not. She has also very questionable moral value when it comes to gratitude and revenge, her gratitude is adjustable. Lev saved you so Lev is cool, torturing to death a man that just saved your life is also ok, or killing a pregnant woman because another pregnant woman was accidentally killed in self-defense, that's no likeable character.

    For a game pushed for its storytelling ability the dialogues are rough and sometimes juvenile, the pacing is awful, the characters often act out of character just to keep the plot going, all the way to the very epilogue.

    The plot also tries to play off Joel as "guilty" of something. Make no mistake: Ellie would've died for no reason, there was never going to be a cure in TLOU1.

    You have to feel sorry for Ellie, not just Joel, the plot is incredibly stupid just so she can be on the short end of the stick at the end. She's left with nothing for no reason, and I don't mean in a "life is unfair" way, I mean "the plot will go full stupid just so she is left with nothing".

    I pity people trying to enable writing like this.

    tl;dr if you have to, get it for the gameplay, but expect to suffer through lots and lots of bad dialogue and contrived drama that often makes no sense just to play the game.    … Expand

The game is made to tell an history it isn't a game of some heroes that kill the bad guys, is a complex history and characters, not a generic game like many others it would be easy to naughty dog just make some other game of adventures with joel and elliie, easy fan service, but they did not they mate a game that would mark people that give the game a chance I cried a lot in Joel death and hated it but after ending the game everything made sense this is a game for real gamers not someone that just plays to kill some bad guys… Expand

I just played Last of Us 1 cause my homies were hyping up how great Last of Us 2 would be when it released so I had looked forward to this game after just being introduced into the series after playing the heartfelt Last of Us 1...but man I was super disappointed that I was severely depressed for the past two days in quarantine that I can’t even eat properly...they killed my favorite father figure within the first hour + of the games story...to a character I could barely care about because her introduction didn’t meld with the series at all...I liked playing as Ellie and her girlfriend Dina at times but...Dina didn’t sit well with me as much as Joel would have...It was sweet finding out Ellie could swim cause of Joel and learned so many new things...but the ending and understanding for her character takes a big shift for no reason whatsoever. Abby will always have a dark place in my heart for littlerally destroying a franchise I held dear..… Expand

    Graphics are good, gameplay is mediocre, but the story is horrible. The extremely forced/unconvincing and lazily written plot is filled with massive plot holes, disrespects beloved characters, and completely ignores everything that made the original game great. It is a disgrace to the original game.

The storytelling is unparalleled, and it makes the original game so much better.     This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At the time of writing, there are 23000 negative reviews for the Last of Us Part II. By looking over the achievement scores on my copy of the game, I can see that less than 2 in 100 people have actually finished it. There's also a trophy you can get at the midpoint of the game gained by winning an (admittedly easy) competition, which less than 10 in 100 people have. That doesn't mean that no one writing a negative review has finished the game, there are legitimate issues with the Last of Us 2 that I can't deny (and will try to address, later). But, in that same vein, I don't think everyone panning the game has played it in its entirety

    There's a meme going around about a person talking about Part II's 'intended experience', then getting shot in the knee with a shotgun. It's a good point, a game isn't good just because you feel what is intended. But what I do say is that the intended experience behind Part II is worthwhile. And it's not being shot in the knee, if that's what you're thinking

    I think a lot of the problems people have with the game stem from blaming Druckmann for the actions of his characters. It's absolutely fair to do so, but, whilst you play the game, I would urge you to think of it as a story in its own right, instead of the aborted fetus of an evil mastermind. In short: have some faith. Naughty Dog knows what it's doing. Come to your conclusions after finishing the game, and don't play it hating Druckmann. Hate his characters

    However, word of warning, it is a very different game to the original Last of Us

    That's my advice for now. Below here we're getting into spoiler territory. If you own the game, and have quit, disgusted, give it another shot. At the very least, the gameplay is fun, even if you hate the story

    Okay. The big issue with the Part 2, the one central to almost every problem players have with this game, is the death of Joel. It's a big issue. The marketing of the game, which featured Joel prominently, is intended to obfuscate his early and sudden death. Many suspected he might die, but not so early on. I can see why Naughty Dog did it, but it was a huge mistake. People came in expecting a similar game to the original, and bought it wanting that experience. It's not even remotely similar. It does not share the same emotion that made the original so beloved. Part 2 is more sophisticated in many ways, and I think it might be 'better', insofar as I can make that claim, but it will never be enjoyable in the same way.

    A lot of people have said that Part 2 is about violence, and revenge. It is, of course. But at the very heart of Ellie and Abby's actions is trauma. A large part of that trauma, for Ellie, is having so much unfinished business with Joel. A feeling the player no doubt shares. This doesn't become obvious until the game is nearly finished, but looking back, the final act is about Ellie dealing with his death. Joel was a bad person, who did bad things, and Ellie hated him but she also loved him and wanted more. It's confused in a way paternal/maternal relationships often are.
    So yeah. There's a reason Joel's death is abrupt and sudden, a reason thematically central to the game. Which is ironic, because the abruptness of his death is why most players hate the game.
    It's absolutely okay to hate Part 2, but hate it on the level it's meant to be dealt with
    Joel dies because he's a happier, less cynical person

    There's a lot more to say. Nearly every aspect of the game revolves around exploring its themes. Ellie and Abby are mirrors of one another, their actions and motivations very similar, one post-retribution, the other pre-retribution. The reason so much screen time is devoted to Abby is that Naughty Dog believes that the story would be incomplete without exploring both. The conflict between WLF and the Seraphites (Wolves and Scars) features trauma and revenge on a cultural scale. Everything about the game (except for some gameplay sections, I guess, but there are also gameplay sections that ARE focused on it) is bent towards exploring this theme, and I think Part 2 does so in a sophisticated manner

    Not much space, I'll try to address issues with the narrative quickly

    Most noticeably, narrative pacing is off. The first quarter of Abby's arc is spent without any sort of real, intriguing motivation for the player, beyond revisiting the cliffhanger. It works to push players forward, but most of the time when the plot gets slow there are excellent gameplay segments or environments to distract. Not so here. I spent a lot of that time bored, until meeting Lev. Naughty Dog attempts to intrigue the player by hinting at 'another side to the story' but it doesn't work until later

    Cultural retribution, a fascinating concept, remains largely unexplored except in small dialogue sections. A shame since there is so much empty space with Abby to work with

    I think this game is amazing. Although the storyline is not as good as the predecessor and might not live up to fan expectations, it is still a compelling story which attracts our attention. The game play, graphics and acting add extra flavour which would make this a contender for Game Of The Year

    Absolutely the most incredible game I have played. I have been playing game since regular Nintendo and play every single game that comes out. The Last of Us 2 is dark, emotional, and the detail shows. No idea about the bad user reviews but you need to spend the time and enjoy this masterpiece.

    Definitely not as good as the last game. And Ellie has lost all of her wit and funny comments. She does not feel as smart as the game before. And the pacing as often too fast for me to really feel something for characters, but some get more screen time then others. Characters are more introduced then built up, and after they are introduced it feels like Ellie has known them for some years already.

    It often feels like things are forced upon the story like love, death and sorrow. And sometimes it feels downright disrespectful against the first game. And in some circumstances while playing this game I myself did not want to play anymore because of certain decisions.

    There are really no interesting characters. Either characters are innocent or they are evil. There is no inbetween crazy or funny. The game feels way to generic, and often not thought out. In some cases I was left wondering why they did certain things.

    The gameplay is also good, but it feels a lot like The Last Of Us. You can dodge and prone. But besides that they did not introduce anything new gameplay wise. Witch is fine by me, I always liked how the game played. Mainly because I was so interested in the story, but in The Last Of Us 2 I felt myself playing just for knowing the whole story. I did not enjoy it, and it felt like doing a task at work. Fun.

    I could come up with a better story in mere minutes/hours then to make everything about revenge and killing. But I am not going to spoil anything.

    They somehow made this game look stunning, but nobody knew about good storytelling? What did all of the story writers quit their job? I'm sure this game paid for good reviews, because the story/plot is so bad a 5yr old could come up with better.

    The game rushes from one thing to another too fast and people die way to fast.

    1/5 because the gameplay, dialogue and graphics are great, but the story and it's decisions is just terrible. And that is the whole point of a single player experience. Such a unfortunate game, and spitting on Joel is the worst thing ever.
    I can't recommend this game to anybody because it has such a terrible story.
    This is like got season 8, just makes you angry playing. Sorry, I can't believe it either. I heard Bruce Straley and Amy Henning quit and many other talented people. So there is probably a bunch of computer nerds left, who know nothing about story. So the game looks great and gameplay is good. But somebody just wanted blood and somehow makes the ending worse the got season 8. No thank you, you have been warned. Buy at your own risk.    … Expand

    Love this game so far, 10 hours in. Grim and sinister. Darker than the original. Also, well written and directed. Great acting. Pretty sophisticated story telling for a AAA game... I wish more big budget games had this kind of adult focus and narrative ambition.

    I just want to say that i LOVED The last of us 1 and i was so hyped for this game even after the leak and bad comments. But after i've played it through i feel empty and angry. Did i wait this long for this butchered story? The last 3 hours of the game felt drawn out and the ending? Sigh..

    It's Mass Effect Andromeda all over again..

The game goes above and beyond the first setting a new standard in the games industry just as the first did in 2013. The game is so well written, the story is complex and pulls on your heartstrings throughout, making for one of the most compelling stories to ever be written. The gameplay is fluid and feels like a true survival game. The game has been receiving a lot of bad reviews from players that believe Naughty Dog has destroyed the franchise by killing off one of the main characters but in all honesty it was always inevitable and the way it was written made me feel the anger and sadness Ellie did making me want to push on and get revenge. The game has the best graphics I have seen in video games. Overall this game is the best I have ever played, definitely play the Last of Us Part 1 before playing this game as it is imperative for the storyline.… Expand

They never said anything about it. That's when you know it's really **** up situation that bootlickers don't mention it and pretends it doesn't exist. And whining that negative reviews are wrong and ignoring and saying they ain't allowed to feel traumatized, anger, and hate.
    Oh and bootlickers most likely don't care.
    They can like it, but doesn't mean I have to like it. Vice versa for them.
    I'm not sure why they're ignoring Ellie's trauma and PTSD will be having.

    The pertinence of Ellie's sexuality in a zombie game about murdering monsters is questionable in the first place, but when the game starts right off the bat beating the LGBT drum and placing so much emphasis on it, it raises questions about the motive.

    Joel is no longer the gruff, manly man he was in the first one. Naughty Dog has taken his balls,
    he is now a meek, timid, and emotionally expressive man who desperately kowtows to Ellie. He went from badass savage to senescent grandpa competing for his chosen childs attention. In the opening exposition, he plays a soft guitar song, singing passionately, exposing his inner turmoil and feelings.

    What the ****? I guess Joel has denounced his toxic masculinity. This is not the Joel fans have come to love. Joel in the first game was compelling explicitly because he was aloof and did not expose himself. As the ancient adage goes, SHOW dont tell. The first game showed us how Joel was tormented, non-verbally, through his actions. In Last of Us 2, he might as well stare at the camera and tell the audience directly; "I'm tortured, emotional and sad! Here, I've written a song about how much I need other people!"

    The narrative of Last of Us 2 would fall into the "culture war" category. It is, first and foremost, trying
    to change American culture by altering gender roles and perceptions of the human condition. I understand what they are trying to do. Men can expose feelings (often considered feminine) and women can kill and be tough (often considered masculine.) But these themes are woven into the story for woke purposes, in a contrived way rather than indirectly. There is no logical explanation for Joels sudden shift into sappy and emotional behavior.

    He suddenly transforms with no explanation between the two games. I dont wan't devs trying to curate my worldview, I don't want devs trying to nudge me towards a woke ideology. I just want devs to write a compelling story, a good game, and leave identitarian politics OUT.

The game play isn't too bad it has the odd issue with a few bugs. Though it was only released a few days ago. So, they may patch a few who knows at this point. As for the story it isn't that bad at all it makes sense some disbanded fireflies wanted Joel dead. For killing the only person who could make a vaccine and one of their fathers. It's a revenge mirror storyline in a way. If you look at the protagonist's team and antagonist's team. They, are very similar both driven by the same force. Cold hard revenge at any cost.Which in a way messes Ellie up a bit mentally after she kills the one woman at the aquarium place It really does mess her up.(she literally vomits on the floor). Having actually purchased and just a couple hours ago finished the game I can say it is a truly interesting story, no it wasn’t a ‘fun’ game, it tells a horrible story, of loss, revenge, grief, trauma. It forces you to evaluate good and bad, no one person, organisation, or community in the game can be defined as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ this games gives you perspective into that and allows you to see that the world of the last of us isn’t black and white, it’s complex, and blurry. In video games your version of what happens is always subjective, if you really had a think about it in almost any video game you might realise that that fictional character you just killed had a family. The last of us confronts that fact, shows the other sides to the key players in the game and ultimately allows you to empathise with them. A quote I love from the book Ender’s Game applies here. "In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.”… Expand

I fell in love with the story and characters. It was in my top 3 favorite games. The first game was so well made, story and graphics. People have been waiting 7 years for this game. I’m pretty sure everyone had high expectation. I definitely did. The graphics of the game are completely outstanding and they put a lot of detail into it. I will not discredit that. The story is the most disappointing part. There could have been so many different outcomes to the story. I think that they pick the worse one. The players that have been here since the beginning; who have a emotional connection to the characters and story, understand why. The fact that Joel died is already heartbreaking, he didn’t need too. What makes me the most upset is that, they didn’t even give him a meaningful death. The death only happened to set up a plot. Which isn’t even a good plot. What makes it even worse is that the advertising/trailers for the game made it seem like Joel was not going to die and be a completely different story. I wish they would have done it completely different. I am not a bot. These are my true feelings on the game. I feel like most people would agree too.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is pure art. I don’t necessarily need to be happy with the events that happen in a game, movie or series. I was incredibly moved by the story, and have never been more invested in a game. And because of how much i care about this game, I will try to justify the two big events of the story that alot of people have a problem with. This is a story about hate and loss, and I think the choices Naughty Dog took with Joel’s death and letting Abby go, was necessary for the story. The death of Joel put Ellie on a revenge mission, and will kill anything that gets in her way. I think that is completely understandable, and shows her incredible loss. She goes on a journey of hate, and only cares about getting to Abby, and therefore not showing any emotion other than hate towards her fellow Wolves. Abby lets Ellie live when they met at the theatre, and therefore shows that she is willing to let go of her hate in order to stop the killing. Also getting to play as Abby, seeing her humanity, and symathizing with her, is a fantastic part of the game. After that, Ellie and Dina lives quite happily on the farm with JJ, but Ellie still has severe problems with Joel’s death, and has a firm belief that killing Abby will make it stop. Dina knows the loss of what a journey of blind hate can make you lose, woth Jesse getting killed. She understands that it is not worth it, and has perspective on what is important. Ellie has not yet realized that fully. She finds Abby on the pole, and is kind of paralyzed when seeing her so weak. When getting memories of Joel, she is enraged and wants to fight, and has the opportunity to kill Abby. When getting another image of Joel, she stops. I think this is because she realizes how much she has lost, with Joel, Jesse, Dina and JJ because of this pure hate. There is simply no point anymore, she figures out that it wont resolve anything. It will only create more suffering. It is sad that alot of people had to die by her hand before she realized, but i dont think it makes the story or the game bad. My perception is that Ellie was clouded by hate for very long, and with time and distance, she subconsiously left that hate behind her, and when she finally had the chance, her hate was gone. I don’t feel good or fulfilled by the ending, but it makes sense. This game moved me and made me think, that is what i think great art is about.… Expand

    El tema más complicado y más obvio es que es duro que un personaje tan querido como lo es Joel se nos vaya así, o mejor dicho lo saquen así, es decir tan crudo. El juego no te da tiempo para llorar su pérdida para que te sientas con la necesidad de venganza. Avanzando y viendo el juego ves unos flashbacks que cierran un arco y un personaje de una manera sólida y en algunos casos devolviendo al jugador o espectador una posibilidad de desahogar sus sentimientos y el poder llorar como es apropiado su muerte. Al encarnar a Abby entendemos su punto y en algunos casos podes llegar a empatizar ya que conoces sus propósitos pero, realmente el final te deja a solo un botón de cumplir lo que queremos . El juego te hace sentir dentro, la trama, los personajes, la ambientación es increible pero realmente era muy dificil dejar a tu decisión la muerte de quien mato a uno de los personajes más queridos de TODA la saga PlayStation? Algunos empatizaron mucho con Abby, okey, no la mates si querés, pero otra gente (incluidos la mayoría) no lo hicimos, entonces el juego no te brinda la manera de desahogo, A PESAR de que el personaje de Abby me parece muy bien escrito, con objetivos muy claros y bien desarrollado, pero nada.     Es triste ver que la ideología de lo políticamente correcto arruinó el legado del primer juego, nadie tenía problemas con que Ellie sea lesbiana pero no hacía falta hacer que la historia gire en base a eso.

    this has to be, without a shadow of a doubt, the absolute worst sequel made for any videogame ever. what a disgrace. if all you have going for your game is the story then why make the story the worst part? ZERO STARS

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
