So after letting the dust settle after the complete **** storm this title received upon release, I finally decided to give it a go with little to no expectations and see how I enjoyed it. I was apprehensive about all the woke elements I had heard had been crammed into it but to be honest, those things really didn’t bother me as much as I thought. Sure, a lot were unnecessary and felt forced where it didn’t need to be, it actually provided some chuckles, however the actual NARRATIVE was an abomination. A train wreck. A spit in the face to what made this franchise great. Gameplay wise it was fantastic. Whoever made the narrative decisions on this game should bow out quietly and perhaps ponder a different creative career. Nay, whoever signed off on whoever made the narrative decisions for this game should be let go immediately. Completely out of touch with fans. The Last of Us 2 should be renamed - How to destroy a franchise in 15 hours… Expand

Such a missed opportunity. The gameplay is incredibly repetitive, the puzzles are almost gone. But what really matters is the story is just relentlessly lacking in any sense of moral direction, hope or purpose. Just a lot of meat slashing, whether its zombies (surprisingly less) or humans (mostly). They short changed Ellie here, this isn't what she became, and I won't participate in it.Such a missed opportunity. The gameplay is incredibly repetitive, the puzzles are almost gone. Just a lot of meat slashing, whether its zombies (surprisingly less) or humans (mostly). They short changed Ellie here, this isn't what she became, and I won't participate in it. All the value in the original story of a potential cure and the motivation of the characters is totally dulled. A lot of the controversy was about being too 'woke'. I don't care about that, I would have loved Ellie as a female protagonist, and her love story was cute. Until she became a totally unrecognisable psycho avenging someone who was themselves, as she could see, morally dubious. She should have stopped after seeing the first torture, and in reality, I think she would have. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is hands down one of the worst games I've ever played. However, I'm judging it as a sequel. As a standalone game, it's just barely average. But the story as a sequel makes absolutely no sense. Characters are regressed to the point of just wtf moments. It's clear that the writers just wanted it to be a Walking Dead clone with how they portrayed everyone. They completely disregard the fact that there are terrifying echolocating cordyceps zombies running amok. They are kind of just a side-note, even though it's what made the first game so scary. They make you love Joel in the first game, noting how distrusting he is, and then completely change his personality and make him look like a little b**** for the sake of crappy storytelling. And you can't even get revenge at the end of the game. Just an absolute failure. Wish I could get that wasted time back. Expand

This game is a fake goty game

    Problems and misunderstanding:

    1. Joels death was painful to watch. You play as a character named Abby who is running away from a horde of zombies. You are then saved by the beloved characters, Joel and Tommy. They save you on multiple occasions and eventually you bring them back to your little hide out. Now the first issue I have here is continuity with character personalities (Characteristics/traits). Joel and Tommy are known to be survivors and it is clearly demonstrated in the first game. When I mean clearly, they literally show Joel being ruthless to a group of bandits that were pretending to be injured, knowing this, Joel goes straight through like a badass. However, this trait is no longer seen in the second game. He casually just walks into a room filled with people that are armed and unknown. He then introduces himself, eventually getting killed. You see Joel die in the most brutally and heart-wrenching way possible during the first act of the game (2 hours in). This is where people misunderstand the majority of why fans hate this. We are not upset that Joel died...its how he died. His death by the end of the game nearly meant nothing. His character is not the same character we grew to love. Nor was his death memorable or meaningful whatsoever. A lot of us understood the motive that was presented here for Ellie, and yes...it did make us angry and we too wanted revenge just like Ellie. But it was done in a way that was so lazy and poorly written.

    2. Playing as Abby. It was very obvious what the game developers were trying to do. They wanted to humanize the character. They tried manipulating the audience by using the whole animal trope where Ellie is bad for killing dogs, Abby is good for saving a zebra and is friendly with dogs. It is these subtle things that make me so frustrated with the game because these devices or elements that are used to get the audience to sympathise with Abby are poorly integrated within the game. I can say that after playing 10 hours with Abby with a storyline that hardly connected with Ellie's, I still felt nothing for her character. Even by the last fight between Ellie and Abby, I was filled with rage and wanted Abby dead so badly.

    3. Poor Character development. I didn't care one bit about any of Abby's friends. In fact, I was super happy when Manny got shot in the face. Owen and Mel's death was nice to see. For the matter a fact, Jesse and Dina were alright characters. I truly didn't think much of them at all, when Jesse died to a bullet to the face, I kind of just sat there and looked at him and shrugged it off. It was clearly just for shock value, and the characters in the game clearly didn't care either.

    4. Political Agendas. Yes...Abby may not be a transgender woman, but my goodness, she got dem guns. Basically, all the men die, woman live on! I never really cared because Ellie was and always has been the best character in the game (apart from Joel). I have always seen Ellie as a badass character. She can handle her own and take on just about anyone. That is what I call a strong, independent female character. However, it is clear that some of the games selling point has to do with the lesbian, transgender LGBTQ political point of views. I am all for these kind of things, if it doesn't affect the story...which it didn't to be quite honest. I was fine with Dina and Ellie being together because I already knew Ellie liked women from the DLC Left behind! But, my goodness, Lev was just a copy paste of trying to replicate the Ellie and Joel relationship with Abby and baldy over there. It just sucks because they could have made all these powerful messages about the LGBTQ into the game, but do it subtly and not shove it down our throats. In doing so, it makes it more impactful and meaningful in a way. LIKE WHY WAS MEL OUT IN COMBAT WHEN SHE WAS PREGNANT! WOMAN EMPOWERMENT? NO!

    5. Ellie learning her lesson at such a weird time. Wtf yo...I tried writing this review in a professional manner, but as you can see above, I have given up. What was the ending. Only after getting 2 fingers bitten off and killing maybe another 50 people she then realises she doesn't want to kill Abby??? How did she not learn her lesson the first time when she encountered her. She killed probably over 200 peeps and by the end of the story shes like nah girl. Leave with yo bald ass baby... Ellie lost everything, whilst Abby is straight drippin in gold. Joels death felt like it was for nothing and the story just ends.

It's not my game to say or have the story the way I wanted , I just can give a feeling to what the game made me feel . First , to be professional, a lot of fans are right , for those who played of course, the game got ruined because of the propaganda. If there was no propaganda, no agenda , then they would have concentrated more on the story and the main plot , which was the virus , the outbreak, the cure , the problem, and not their own agenda . You can't force people to accept things they don't want , and you can't force people to reject what they accept , so leave your values and agenda to yourself , and make a game that is for strictly fun reasons only , a game is supposed to be well made and enjoyed , and without delivering any messages . So while the game had so much potential to get a 10/10 , gameplay is a solid 9.5/10 , a few tweaks would do a charm , the story is very far away from the main plot , it had nothing to do with the infection , a cure , dealing with the problems , running away , regrouping and forming some sort another solution " NADA " . So it is a bad game , and I don't mind sad endings , eventually if the game makes you feel sad then that's the purpose of it , but the game did not discuss the main problem , they had to make abby for this to work and ruin the main game . It's like a game of vengeance and learning lessons that revenge is bad , but that ain't the last of us anymore , an entirely different game . Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a standalone game it is not bad but as a sequel to one of the best games of all time this is simply awful.

    There's a lot of plotholes:

So Joel murders almost everyone at the hospital yet they keep their identities?
There's even a note in game of someone who changes their identity to escape from a cult.

Ellie and Tommy living when Joel dies, I get the group discuss it but why was the possibility of people trying to save Joel not discussed before hand.
Also why did Abby's group decide to spare them, as if Joel's own brother wouldn't hunt you down until his dying days?

When they send people out to find Tommy, three teenagers can go even though Abby came down with about 10 people.

To play as Abby when it initially felt like the end was a good turn but dragging out all that time with a player you didn't care for and in fact hated was flawed (clearly designed to generate sympathy which given the reviews it didn't work, we should have played as Abby to start the game in order for us to build a rapport.)

The absolute off chance that Abby would bump into the 1 trans seraphite and then immediately form a bond with him that extends her story by umpteen hours.
I am a fan of the lgbt representation and the visible nature of the lesbian storyline for Ellie and Dina is a brilliantly shown relationship, that isn't grotesquely over sexualised like other women in games but that Abby bumps into the 1 Trans seraphite?

The feasibility of a 13 year old who spent their entire life on a remote island, raised by a murderous cult, cut off from whatever is left on the mainland knows and identifies as trans? There are many ways to have added logic to how Lev came to this decision, like perhaps an older seraphite who lived in the old world has come out as trans or Yara finds a book on LGBT, yet none were taken.

I just find it very hard that a 13 year old would run away from the safety of a cult, (even if it's a death cult), and try and live in a 'zombie' infested city, literal life and death.

You are supposed to care for Abby and Owen's relationship but it's never explained how it ended or how he ended up with Mel.

So Joel has survived over 2 decades in this world yet makes the mistake of admitting his real identity, and then Ellie also forgets the map? Why do they all forget basic survival techniques?

What is the point of the rattlers keeping Abby prisoner?
It's not explained if the firefly house was a ruse or if it was legit and what they even do with the prisoners (surely it's not hard to have a bit of slave labour or someone thrown to a chained clicker).
Then the ending is nonsensical, after 20-30 hours why on earth would we be happy with not killing Abby and finishing the main reason we are doing all of this?

Generally how can I headshot a brute and they don't die instantly? I get they're supposed to be these massive people with a sledgehammer but no human will take 2 point blank shotgun shells to the chest before they die, at least given them some armour.
Shamblers were a very nice enemy imo, especially where there were 2 at once.

Why can we carry only 2 clips of ammo per gun, no one will have 'FULL' pockets in an apocalypse.

Gameplay is what you would expect, sounds are great, tense atmosphere.
The media doesn't always have to have a happy ending, (look at avengers and everyone we lost over those 2 movies), but make it a logical one.

Even a simple ending of Lev begging Ellie to stop attacking Abby, and Ellie looks at him only to see herself in Lev and realise what she has become makes more sense than this.
I personally would have had Abby dodge a knife attack from Ellie which results in Ellie falling and stabbing Lev in the shoulder and Abby goes straight to tending the wound rather than retaliate against Ellie, at which point it dawns on Ellie everything she and Abby have lost on this journey and how Lev represents a breaking of that cycle.

Like I said at the start, as a standalone video game it is good but as part of a series it flat out is illogical and poorly written, and the revenge is bad story is overdone and sucks if there aren't enough stories which balance it out by showing that revenge doesn't fill that hole after it is taken. Too often the 'humanity' kicks in before the climax, as if we haven't murdered 100s to get to this point.

Disappointment is now synonymous with "The Last of Us. Part 2"

Disappointment from the fact that the author of the script of this game flushed down the toilet, the incredible gaming experience that the first part of the game gave us.

I put 1 point. And this is without taking into account the excellent work of everyone who worked on the technical part of the game. Great acting. Incredible character animation. Great music and sound overall. But... all this loses its meaning if you are presented with crap in a nice wrapper.
And all because of a terrible scenario.

If you do start, be prepared that in the middle of the game they will give you a bucket of **** and say: "Eat this!"
You will be forced to do things that are not interesting to you or even disgusting. You will hope that it will end quickly, but no - the bucket of **** will have to be eaten completely.
And when the story is approaching the end, you will have one wish - let it end as soon as possible. You will be sick of the meaningless and aimless action in which you will participate. And the credits will be a relief.

The moral of the story is primitive and stupid. It's a shame for the authors that they put everything on this childish rule: "It's bad to be bad, it's good to be good."

If you liked the first part, then I do not recommend playing "The Last of Us. Part 2".

The main disappointment of recent years.

The game on a mechanical level is excellent, very detailed and realistic. It is a pity that the story is so bad, incongruous and with thousands of scripts, in addition to a lousy and unsatisfactory ending. Bruce Strailey should have directed this second part.

The Last of Us Part 2’s Metacritic Page Shows How Broken Numerical Scores Are

Despite The Last of Us Part 2‘s mixed critical reception, review score aggregator Metacritic shows it with a critical score of 95 out of 100, with a plethora of 10/10s developer Naughty Dog has been happy to tout. The user scores, meanwhile, sit at an abysmal 3.5 out of 10, based on over 31,000 reviews and counting, over 20,000 of which are negative. All of these numbers are meaningless.

User reviews on Metacritic began pouring in almost as soon as the game launched. Much of this was likely review bombing, a practice in which people intentionally flood a game with negative reviews. Forbes noted that the game had over 5,000 user reviews only a half-day into release, suggesting “unless people are doing blitzing speed runs and then immediately going to Metacritic to post angry 0/10 reviews…something fishy is clearly going on.”

The game hasn’t even been out for two full days in the US; running at 25-30 hours, it’s unlikely many of these negative reviews, even taking into account regions where the game launched sooner, are from people who’ve finished it. A vocal contingent of players has been set against The Last of Us Part 2 since its April’s leaks. On Metacritic, a large portion of reviews reflect this, calling director Neil Druckmann **** and railing against the game’s “SJW propaganda.” “This is a political statement, not a video game,” wrote one user.

Other negative reviews are more reasoned, taking complaints with the game’s story, citing plotholes and unlikeable characters. “Unfortunately, this sequel destroys the remarkable achievements of the first game,” wrote one reviewer. “Once you’ve finished it it literally has been for nothing!” wrote another. Many players disliked what the game does to some of its beloved characters, with one writing that a character’s story was “a complete insult to the character.”

The Last Of Us 2: The Kotaku Australia Review
While the negative reviews far, far outweigh the positive ones, there are also over 800 mixed reviews as of this writing, and over 8,500 positive ones. “Unmatched facial expressions, incredible level and audio design and phenomenal graphics make this one of the most beautiful worlds ever created… The story is shocking and real,” reads one early positive review.

For comparison, the generally reviled Fallout 76 for PS4 has a critical score of 53 against a user score of 2.8, based on 4,601 reviews. The disastrous Anthem has a critical 54 versus a user score of 3.5, based on 1,268 reviews. Mass Effect 3, whose contentious ending drew so much ire developer Bioware changed it, has a 93 critical score against a 5.7 based on 1,921 reviews. These critical numbers don’t all reflect the many sites that don’t use review scores, or ones that have dropped numbers or altered how they’re utilised ” Polygon, for instance, stopped using numbered scores in 2018, while IGN removed decimal scores in January. (Kotaku, meanwhile, has never used numbers.) In all these cases, however, both the critical and user scores on Metacritic seem to paint at least some reasonable picture of these games’ receptions.

Whether The Last of Us Part 2‘s mind-bending amount of negative reviews are from players predisposed to hate the game or those who legitimately found it lacking, the discrepancy between the critical and user scores is notable. There are a lot of problems with Metacritic: the effects ratings have on game developers and the ease with which players can abuse them, to name a few. Basing your sense of a game’s quality on numbered review scores is itself a fool’s errand; Metacritic scores fail to take into account the diverse critical opinions of the game (several user reviews accuse these positive critical scores of being paid for) and the plentiful non-scored reviews (such as Kotaku‘s, among others).

Someone looking at critical scores alone would believe the game was widely beloved, only to be faced with the onslaught of negative user reviews that might lead even the most sceptical reader to believe something was amiss on the critical end of things. That aside, the sheer amount and noise of the user reviews would make it even more difficult to tell how players actually feel about the game. Metacritic, for all it’s become a supposedly vital metric for assessing a game’s quality, here shows a bunch of meaningless numbers and a lot of rage, very little of which paint any picture of how players are actually finding the g

I struggled to care about the second main character and while I respect the risk they took in this story I think the pacing ruins what could have been an enjoyable experience. The dialogue is far inferior to the first game and it's noticeable from the first moments. The subtext is very superficial and many of the lines are way too on the nose to be believable and the contrivances ruin the overall believability as well. I wanted to give this game a stronger score because I wanted to believe it isn't as bad as the hype made it seem but after playing it I wouldn't recommend it unless it was on a massive sale or skipping it entirely. It gives a strange feeling that the production team is carving flowers in **** The plot arrangement is full of malice and is obviously designed to make players angry and uncomfortable. This is also why this game can trigger so many zero-score negative reviews instead of just five or six-score reviews. I am quite skeptical of players who give this game a high score because they may have a severe people-pleasing personality. They cannot feel the malice behind the writing, readily accepting the negative emotions it brings and therefore believing that the game is a "masterpiece that inspires deep human emotions." They should really consider seeing a therapist.

P.S. the poor quality of the game has nothing to do with political correctness. It fails to move people because the storyline is not well crafted. Even if you replace every "politically correct" character with heterosexual white males, it won't change the fact that the storyline of this game is still bad. The Last of Us Part 2 is a prime example of a game that prioritizes pushing a supposed "LGBT agenda" over delivering a compelling and enjoyable experience. This sequel is marred by heavy-handed and forced attempts at inclusivity, overshadowing any potential for a well-crafted story and engaging gameplay.

Rather than focusing on the characters and their development, the game seems more interested in hammering its progressive messaging into the player's consciousness. The inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters feels contrived and unnecessary, as their sexual orientation becomes their defining trait rather than an aspect of their identity. The narrative sacrifices depth and coherence to virtue signal, resulting in a disjointed and unsatisfying storyline.

Unfortunately, this obsession with inclusivity negatively impacts the gameplay as well. The forced diversity feels more like tokenism, with the game's agenda taking precedence over meaningful gameplay mechanics. It's clear that the developers prioritized their message over creating a polished and enjoyable gaming experience.

In addition to the narrative shortcomings, the gameplay itself is riddled with flaws. The combat encounters lack innovation and fail to offer any real challenge, while the stealth mechanics feel clunky and unrefined. The pacing is uneven, with stretches of repetitive gameplay that make the experience monotonous and tedious.

Furthermore, technical issues plague the game, with frequent frame rate drops and glitches that disrupt immersion and undermine the overall experience. It's disheartening to see a game of this magnitude released with such significant technical shortcomings.

Ultimately, The Last of Us Part 2's preoccupation with pushing an "LGBT agenda" at the expense of a well-crafted narrative and enjoyable gameplay is a disservice to the potential of the franchise. Instead of embracing diversity in a meaningful way, the game comes across as pandering and lacks the substance that made its predecessor so memorable. It's a missed opportunity and a disappointing addition to the series .
