I hate the game. I'm sorry but the story line is aweful. I will never recommend that game. I hope next time developers have more respect for our beloved heroes.

The story is extremely poor and its hard to digest, the writers took this franchise down the wrong path and totally shat on its predecessor. The only redeeming qualities are the graphics and gameplay. You might as well play the first and be done with it.

You know, you, the gamer, are in the middle of it, and we people have feelings too, you know, outside of Twitter. So yes, the vengeful feeling really got the best of me, and I was just too trigger-happy to thing wisely. It's not that I had a choice, mind you, but I wouldn't have chosen any different, without learning the full picture. But then the game offered me another perspective that I grew to like and grew fond of. When all hell broke loose and everything dawned on me, I was the idiot who believed I was right in the first place. Well, you know what I'm talking about, especially if you completed the story. I liked to be manipulated by not feeling accomplished or the main hero of the story. I had very little agency. Point me a game that makes you feel like that. But before you do, do yourself a favor and play this game. Expand

Instant -1 Because of certain events involving golfing.
Performance: It runs great on a PS4, but does it even matter if the game is terrible?

So 4/10, This Story, This game could have been magnificent, a true testament to AAA gaming. But it was wasted by poor writing related to events, characters and reasoning.

I am not looking forward to Part III, Unlesss Part II was an alternate universe or a dream.

I tried very hard to find some way to like this game, and I was successful, but just barely.

The Last of Us Part 2, though graphically beautiful, is not a logical continuation of part 1. It feels more like a fiction within a fiction, a deliberately structured by-the-book revenge allegory that ultimately delivers a relevant social message but at the cost of mangling the plot themes and character development events of the original game. In fact the hardcover placard contained within the limited edition written by Druckmann himself alludes to such a plot contrivance.
The question I suppose, is why? Why did they choose this path for part 2? Why castrate the characters and story of one of the greatest games of all time just to deliver an admittedly artful social commentary? Based on the new characters, events and story as it all plays out this game should have been a standalone entry in an original universe. I think it would have done great on its own. It makes no sense whatsoever that ND cannibalized the The Last of Us characters and universe to create this game. It’s not like they needed the pre-sales dollars (apropos the notoriously deceptive pre-release advertising) to fund it. Their reputation alone would have guaranteed their budget.

I have to conclude that the answer is simple: Colossal miscalculation. I don’t think the ND dev team deliberately set out to eviscerate The Last of Us storyline potential and anger the game’s fans. Somewhere along the development trail the plot analysis -vs- target demographic ball got dropped in a significant way. While trying to create an impactful work of art they lost sight of their number one mandate: serve your audience. Of course they had to know or at least suspect that the final plot line would earn the ire of a portion of their loyal fan base. But I don’t think they realized the extent of their error until after the massive numbers of negative user reviews started rolling in. By then it was too late.

It is true that there are lots of gushing 9/10 star reviews out there. Many are reactionary to the negative ones and thus act as balancers; the informed reviews are coming from multimedia critics more attuned to the allegorical architecture than to the fictional world in which it takes place. And yes to the game’s credit it IS beautifully presented with great acting, visuals and gameplay. There are also some moving and interesting flashbacks. Ultimately however, the good elements of the game are overshadowed by the infuriating overarching main plot.

More disheartening - in spite of the game’s gut-twisting opening scenes which set up the revenge plot - the writing team could actually have saved the story to some degree by providing us with a satisfying, contextually consistent ending. However, instead of remaining true to the violent nature of the game universe and giving us the closure that Ellie’s character most certainly would have demanded, they opted for a formulaic ‘high road’ finale that leaves the player staring at his monitor in stunned disbelief. Given the amazingly high body count over the extended play through, the absurd ending sequence was the loudest WTF moment I’ve ever seen in a game, and I’ve played a LOT of games in the last 30 years.

After finishing, I mulled it over for a few days before writing this review and settling on a medium score. In this at least, Druckmann’s team succeeded in their stated goal of engaging the player to examine the revenge conundrum. I did, and while I agree with the real-world synopsis that revenge-seeking needlessly perpetuates a cycle of violence that ultimately harms everyone it touches—The Last Of Us is not the real world. It is a game and it depicts a world in which humanity is on its last brutal march to annihilation. ND created this world and the gameplay delivered it: no quarter, no compromise, ‘endure and survive.’

So…everything else remaining the same, maddening initial plot premise and all, here is how The Last of Us Part 2 SHOULD have ended:

‘ We don’t see the fiery explosion of the awkwardly thrown Molotov as it engulf’s Ellie’s battered enemies. There’s no need. Instead we see the fire reflected in Ellie’s eyes as she watches briefly, perhaps feeling a quick stab of sadness for all the death - mixed incongruously with a weary satisfaction.

As the image of her face fades with the waning flames, we hear Ellie say in a half whisper, “that’s that.” ‘

Had they at least thrown their core fans this small bone, or something similar, I think their user reviews would have been much higher. As they left it, well….If they’ve got any savvy new hires up at ND, I sure hope they’re putting in a sh*t ton of overtime thinking up ways to retcon this albatross out of the canon and win back some of their fans. Indeed, with their shiny new HBO contract, they have a golden opportunity.

It is bizarre how a series goes from one the best games of all time to a sequel that is among the worst of all time. Awful writing. Violence for the sake of violence. Bad pacing. Repetitive. A plot-twist that a monkey would laugh how they thought of it. It is so unrealistic that believing aliens is more sane than thinking that plot would actually ever be believable.

The rest is just a mix of lazy game design, woke cancer, and horrible writing. You play as one of two terrible people doing terrible things, there's a trans kid because the writer is a groomer, and the Abby character is by all means a man they threw a woman's head on last second. The gameplay is interrupted by forced route finding because everything straight forward is conveniently broken, fails, or locked. The gameplay mostly requires constantly killing everyone you see with guns handicapped by the futile weaponry an average Los Angeles urbanite thinks is real. Artificially low magazine capacity, weak cartridges, double barrels and revolvers galore. It's based in the US but may as well be Britain with how sparse the guns and ammo are.

I honestly hate this game because it's yet another competent-looking product that exists to push more degenerate subjects like homosexuals, transgenderism, adultry, murder, and pointless secular existence.

I think this game is meant to make you think and feel, and those thoughts and feelings will not be happy thoughts and feelings. This game will not make you laugh and cry. There is no rollercoaster of emotions. It is a plummeting elevator with broken lights; it goes straight down and gets darker. It will make you feel shocked, sad, and by the end, utterly empty. The Last of Us Part 2 is an epic Shakespearean Tragedy, a cautionary tale. Rather than an exercise in mindless violence, it is a uniquely painful implementation of mindful violence. Neil Druckman did something powerful and commendable—a truly unique expression of Art.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TLOU1 got maximum points from me. Why didn’t TLOU2 get it? There are three main reasons for this:
    1. The way Joel died was just horrible.
    2. Playing as Abby was a forced activity that I would not have wanted to do.
    3. Story.

This game feels different compared to the first game. It does have some new game mechanics compared to the first game (for example crawling and dodge possibilities), but nothing very different. Infected behavior is a little bit different and the sound they make is also refined. It takes time to get used to, especially if you've just played through TLOU1.

I remember in TLOU1 trying to get past the doctor without harming him, but the game wouldn't allow it. It was just frustrating. And now Joel paid a high price for it. Joels death was too cruel for me as I loved his character and played with him over 10 hours in the first TLOU game. I felt like I was ready to stop playing the game after that scene. But I forced myself to play to find out what would happen to Ellie.
On Ellie`s gameplay, you don’t get powerful weapons (for example shotgun and plantable bomb) if you don’t search every corner and every house. I can only imagine how hard the game is without these.

Playing as Abby went on and on, felt like never ending. I noticed that playing as Abby on normal difficulty was significantly harder than playing as Ellie. It was fun that Abby had a dog and I got to use it a few times at first, but that was about it. Most of the time the dog was not with Abby. WLF always keeps dogs with them, but somehow Abby only had it in the beginning. I don’t get it. Fighting Tommy, aka Joel's brother, was especially uncomfortable as Abby. Tommy was very good with his sniper rifle and could easily take Abby down as he took already the whole WLF team down. I absolutely did not want to play that part, and it felt so wrong. Elli and Abby's fight in the theater was particularly strange. Elli was so much stronger (shotgun, etc.) that she could have easily killed Abby. But the game didn't allow it!

There are a lot of flash backs, and I repeatedly lost track of where I was and what I was doing. I've never seen so many flash backs in any game than this one.

So, Ellie is gay and is dating a woman, Abby is like a man, and there is a dedicated chapter to transgender girl/boy. What did I just play? It does not make any sense at all. Abby had sex with Owen but for some reason didn't get pregnant. Owen had sex with another woman (Mel) and quickly got her pregnant. You can't fail to notice these kinds of strange things.

If you have played TLOU1 and are thinking about playing TLOU2, I recommend not playing it. Joel did what he had to do with all those who wanted to hurt Elli. This game is not worth ruining the beautiful memories of Joel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall I loved the game. A lot of people are showing hate to this game simply because they feel way too attached to characters from the first game. Especially considering that the game is set in a post apocalyptic world where people die at any moment in the most unexpected ways. It’s because of these angering yet realistic and haunting moments that make this game beautiful. People who couldn’t see this are stuck in fairy tales where main characters dance around a lilyfield. I thought naughty dog captured this dark, realistic post apocalyptic setting brilliantly. The new characters introduce a new dynamic to the game which tells stories of how morals have been changed amongst the new generation depicted by the “scars” (especially lev as we hear him question human behaviours which we deem normal which he either doesn’t believe, know or understand). Even I was slightly discouraged by the change in characters after playing Ellie, but the character development was done well enough that I was eventually absorbed by abbys story and forgot the emotions that Ellie’s side presented throughout her play through. It is really sad to see that people overwhelmed by emotion have not been able to enjoy and appreciate the masterpiece that this game represents. Tackling incredible themes like revenge, guilt, remorse and redemption, The Last Of us II has become one of my favorite games. The game takes courageous decisions, regardless of what the masses want, it is consistent in his lesson and moral, with a sensational journey about choosing light or dark, and the consequences of choosing either. Masterpiece, it will be difficult for any story to surpass. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very well made game in terms of gameplay, animation, sound design and the beautiful environments you explore. However, being a game series heavily focused on story, the story has many elements that are good with effective writing, but many elements that are terrible and hard to ignore which ruin the experience as a whole. I went into this game knowing the hate but did not expect the extent of the hate to be completely valid. Joel's death is rushed into and makes his character go out in a way that is truly lazy and not like how his character would have acted as portrayed in the first game . Then, you play as Ellie on a revenge quest to kill Abby (the girl who killed Joel) for half the game. The other half you change to Abby and the game tries so hard to get players to sympathize with her character but in the worst ways. The group she sided with after her father died by Joel from the first game is the most brutal and savage group of people who shoot on sight any of Joel and Ellie's group members or anyone who opposes them. It was clear in the first game that Joel had no choice but to kill the Fireflies to save Ellie and the Fireflies were completely fine with killing a fourteen year old kid and forcing Joel to obey that command. This means that even the Fireflies who Abby was with are evil spirited as well. Killing Ellie, the one person who humanized Joel from the first game to save and vaccinate people like Abby and groups that kill anyone discriminately was obviously not worth it to Joel. After playing as Abby for 10 hours of this game I never once felt any remorse for her for killing Joel. She went though tough times but everyone does in this world. Furthermore, I'm not sure if it was the new writer on board with this game, Halley Gross, but the push for an LGBTQ+ agenda is atrocious. I'm aware that a ton of people had this problem and I first thought it was nitpicking and not as obvious as people were saying, but I was clearly wrong. None of what the game was supporting is the problem, it is how the game shoves it down player's throats. Ellie is gay and is dating a woman, which was clear from the first game and in itself is not the problem. The problem is the writing that accompanies it. Ellie constantly calls her lover babe and the game shows many making out/sex scenes between the two. Also, Abby looks like a man in a world where that would not be nearly feasible. There is a transgender boy/girl who has a dedicated chapter of the game explaining how it is troubling and we should feel bad. If anything, this should be insulting to those groups of people the writers are attempting to appeal to by how cliché and corny it all is. To sum up the review, this was not the sequel the fans deserved in any way. The writers even completely vilify Joel's actions at the end of the first game at the end of this game by saying he would have done all of it all over again if he was given the chance. Why would Joel ever want to do things differently when he traveled across the country to deliver a girl to a group of people that simply picked her up and walked 50 feet to the hospital where they pointed guns and threatened the one man who made it possible. All on top of the fact that they are going to kill her. Expand

This game is overly bleak. Also, switching characters half way through kills the pacing. The same story and goal (of hate destroying people and leading to ruin) could have been done better by arranging things differently.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What an absolute joke. Don't misunderstand: I have no problems with trans characters. Joel dying made sense. The way he died set the story up brilliantly. The reason he died was the only possible way to end it. But to THEN make us PLAY as the character we want to die more than any other character? Why would I want to win? At least give the players the damn CHOICE whether they pull the trigger at the end.

Completely destroys the enjoyment of the game at a core level, and actively works against the beautiful gameplay, because you don't want to play the Abby sections.

I got it refunded. First game I ever got refunded.

Extremes of love, fury, fear, grief, regret and redemption are realistically depicted through the game’s cast of refreshingly deep, flawed and diverse characters, who have evolving personalities justified by their background, relationships and experiences. Its exceptional writing is enhanced through gorgeously rendered cutscenes with stunning cinematography, top-quality voice acting and animation, excellent music and sound design, and immersive gameplay which greatly improves upon the simple-yet-satisfying rhythms established in previous entry.

In-game environments are impressively realistic and rich with detail, noticeably lacking the usual asset repetition. As you make your way through infested ruins, overgrown cities patrolled by hostile humans, and settlements where the remnants of civilization are attempting to survive and rebuild, you will find that each area has its secrets - everything from vital crafting materials, to books which unlock new and powerful skill paths, to letters and other grim discoveries which together paint a poignant picture of the brutal world of TLOU.

The game’s application of tension is masterful, with the player being kept on their guard through a mixture of peaceful exploration, delightfully unpredictable scripted events, stealth scenarios, and high-intensity action during which the player teeters on the edge of a horrible demise. Caution and attentiveness is rewarded while complacency and poor preparation are appropriately punished. Enemy AI is smarter than ever and the addition of several new enemy types keeps encounters fresh and challenging. Resource availability on Survivor difficulty feels ‘just right’, with success requiring thorough exploration, crafting and careful resource management. A broad suite of accessibility options offers unparalleled accommodation to the player.

Though NaughtyDog’s approach has proved polarizing to fans, I’m of the firm opinion that TLOU2 represents a quality standard that future developers should aspire to. When paired with its predecessor, the series offers a journey that everyone should experience and judge for themselves.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm honestly confused by some of the reviews I see here. I feel like they were playing a different game to me.

    - I can understand being upset that you're favourite character died, but we're living in a post Game of Thrones world here, that's just part of the narrative
    - I can understand (at least on a theoretical level) being annoyed that this game was trying to be inclusive, and add more representation to the main characters - although personally I'm happy to see that, I think it's well overdue in video games. However even if that's something you're against, it seems reductive to reduce the entire rating of the story down to a 0/10 based purely on that.
    - Perhaps a more understandable critique for me is the level of violence in the game, though I have the impression most of the negative reviews are from people who were fans of the first game, and that had just as much violence

Anyway, maybe I should write more about what I experienced, and less about what others experienced. For me this is the most nuanced story I've seen in a video game. I was a huge fan of the first game, but, with all the love in the world, the first game's story is pretty tried. I think I loved the story despite of the worn out clichés, simply because the delivery of the actors was so fantastic.

The story here is doing something difference. It's good precisely because it's not a one decided good guys against the bad guys story, but rather the sometimes good guys against the sometimes good guys. There were moments in this game that were completely gut wrenching (not just early on in the game, when the main character is killed), but throughout. The ending especially, I've never cried so much at the ending of a game, and that for me is the highest praise I could give a game.

The gameplay/visuals/music is much the same as the first game, if this were simply the same story as the first game, continuing, I wouldn't have given this such a high score. However the fact that the story is so unbelievably compelling, is what drives me to give it such a high review.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This game was literally the only game I threw away after playing through for a couple hours, I think this game definitely deserves the bad press it got 100%, the story is bland and focuses way too much on making the female characters strong and turning a smart and strong man dumb and weak, this is also excluding murdering him very early on, and the biggest issue with this is the fact that a lesbian bigot straight up tortured him and killed him in front of Ellie, who was practically his child and they cared for each other, but she also bit off two of Ellie’s fingers as well, and this **** gets to live after all of this, this isn’t even taking into account the other important characters they kill off and the game tries to hard to make you like the person you hate. Starting from the study of the movements of the characters and the skin on the knuckles after the blows, ending with the drawing of mushrooms on the bodies of the infected. Titanic work. I personally especially liked the study of artificial intelligence of enemies. On the difficulty level "uncompromising" with settings realism forced to suffer. Their conversations, the way they constantly come from the back .. It’s difficult and how it was ..

I'll go through the story a little. I liked it, and you will. True, starting from the second half of the game, such empathy is not seen as before. Playing for Ellie is much more morally pleasant than playing for an inflated closet - Abby. True, Abby has a better weapon.

A Masterpiece, maybe the game of the generation. One of the greatest screenplay for a videogame, a mature and brave story.

One of the worst and most pathetic triple a game releases of all time. An agenda filled game fueled by the creative writers own western political views, an atrociously written story with horrible characters and one of the most non sensical endings of all time. First game was retconned to fit this abomination they concocted after the fact.

Absolutely loved this game after playing it for myself I loved the gameplay and loved the story really good only thing holding it back is the lack or replayability and rewards like the first game and the story has some odd placement of flashbacks

One of the most heart wrenching stories ever. A true lesson in radical empathy. Just because a story is sad (or gay) doesn't make it bad. I'm still reeling over this game weeks after finishing it.

The Last of Us Part II, ktorý sa odohráva päť rokov po perfektnom konci originálu, vás stavia do (teraz oveľa väčšej) pozície Ellie, ktorá si v Jacksone vytvára normálny život.

The Last of Us Part II neprináša revolúciu v boji , ale ani v stealth mechanikách svojho predchodcu, namiesto toho sa rozhodol pridať len ďalšie spôsoby boja proti nepriateľom.

The Last of Us Part 2’s Metacritic Page Shows How Broken Numerical Scores Are

Despite The Last of Us Part 2‘s mixed critical reception, review score aggregator Metacritic shows it with a critical score of 95 out of 100, with a plethora of 10/10s developer Naughty Dog has been happy to tout. The user scores, meanwhile, sit at an abysmal 3.5 out of 10, based on over 31,000 reviews and counting, over 20,000 of which are negative. All of these numbers are meaningless.

User reviews on Metacritic began pouring in almost as soon as the game launched. Much of this was likely review bombing, a practice in which people intentionally flood a game with negative reviews. Forbes noted that the game had over 5,000 user reviews only a half-day into release, suggesting “unless people are doing blitzing speed runs and then immediately going to Metacritic to post angry 0/10 reviews…something fishy is clearly going on.”

The game hasn’t even been out for two full days in the US; running at 25-30 hours, it’s unlikely many of these negative reviews, even taking into account regions where the game launched sooner, are from people who’ve finished it. A vocal contingent of players has been set against The Last of Us Part 2 since its April’s leaks. On Metacritic, a large portion of reviews reflect this, calling director Neil Druckmann **** and railing against the game’s “SJW propaganda.” “This is a political statement, not a video game,” wrote one user.

Other negative reviews are more reasoned, taking complaints with the game’s story, citing plotholes and unlikeable characters. “Unfortunately, this sequel destroys the remarkable achievements of the first game,” wrote one reviewer. “Once you’ve finished it it literally has been for nothing!” wrote another. Many players disliked what the game does to some of its beloved characters, with one writing that a character’s story was “a complete insult to the character.”

While the negative reviews far, far outweigh the positive ones, there are also over 800 mixed reviews as of this writing, and over 8,500 positive ones. “Unmatched facial expressions, incredible level and audio design and phenomenal graphics make this one of the most beautiful worlds ever created… The story is shocking and real,” reads one early positive review.

For comparison, the generally reviled Fallout 76 for PS4 has a critical score of 53 against a user score of 2.8, based on 4,601 reviews. The disastrous Anthem has a critical 54 versus a user score of 3.5, based on 1,268 reviews. Mass Effect 3, whose contentious ending drew so much ire developer Bioware changed it, has a 93 critical score against a 5.7 based on 1,921 reviews. These critical numbers don’t all reflect the many sites that don’t use review scores, or ones that have dropped numbers or altered how they’re utilised ” Polygon, for instance, stopped using numbered scores in 2018, while IGN removed decimal scores in January. (Kotaku, meanwhile, has never used numbers.) In all these cases, however, both the critical and user scores on Metacritic seem to paint at least some reasonable picture of these games’ receptions.

Whether The Last of Us Part 2‘s mind-bending amount of negative reviews are from players predisposed to hate the game or those who legitimately found it lacking, the discrepancy between the critical and user scores is notable. There are a lot of problems with Metacritic: the effects ratings have on game developers and the ease with which players can abuse them, to name a few. Basing your sense of a game’s quality on numbered review scores is itself a fool’s errand; Metacritic scores fail to take into account the diverse critical opinions of the game (several user reviews accuse these positive critical scores of being paid for) and the plentiful non-scored reviews (such as Kotaku‘s, among others).

Someone looking at critical scores alone would believe the game was widely beloved, only to be faced with the onslaught of negative user reviews that might lead even the most sceptical reader to believe something was amiss on the critical end of things. That aside, the sheer amount and noise of the user reviews would make it even more difficult to tell how players actually feel about the game. Metacritic, for all it’s become a supposedly vital metric for assessing a game’s quality, here shows a bunch of meaningless numbers and a lot of rage, very little of which paint any picture of how players are actually finding the g

Really, Neil? You liked her? She was awful and nothing to like about her. Normally I can understand why someone would do what they did but this one just.. Why?? Why did Joel have to die like that? That didn't make the story in any way great. Just sad. And sad ending didn't feel good at all. He was the last person I wanted to die. I can't emphasize enough how much I hated this story. It wasn't a story about love, it was a story about revenge and loss. Gj Neil fuggman. Expand

The Last of Us Part II changed my life forever, this is what art is all about, this game is an absolute masterpiece and one of the boldest creations of all times when talking about games, and it was executed in such quality that I´d say that if ANY game got CLOSE to technical Perfection, this was the one that did it the best.

Mechanically and visually this game is nearly flawless. I felt right at home with the controls after playing the first game on PS3. Some of the controls are a little old (e.g. weapon selection). The only thing that holds this game back is the story and the decision to make the game longer by playing as multiple characters.

I finally got around it and played this mess, and Oh Boy, let me say that this is the one game that If I could, I would give a negative score.
Without going into specifics, you have:
-Gameplay literally lifted from a 2012 game -Poorly written, unlikable and unrecognizable "characters" (In the case of Ellie ESPECIALLY) -Some of the most cringe inducing pandering I've seen in my life

    -Generic "revenge bad" plot
-One of the worst "partings" to a beloved character to date
-THE grossest sex scene ever put in a video game to date

Really, I take even an Issue with people that say to give it a shot and play this game because it looks "graphically impressive".

You see, when you have a story driven game and the story is an absolute disaster, graphics don't really matter in my book, saying: "But it looks good though!" is a very shallow compliment for something that really doesn't benefit the overall experience in any way that I would consider substantive, especially if you realize how weak the other two components are.
And sure, it's a great extra if the game looks nice, but it should never, EVER, be the focus you strive for (See the Order 1886).

No wonder there was a massive exodus from Naughty Dog after this game was released, I can't think that in good faith a lot of people working there saw this and thought it was ok in any capacity.

And you better leave your other IPs alone from now on, I shudder to think what a Neil Druckmann Jak & Daxter or Uncharted game post TLOU2 would look like.

As for future entries, do whatever you want with this series, get aliens involved, IDFC, at this point my investment is dead and buried, I'll probably skip part 3 and watch the cutscenes on YouTube or something like that.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
