The story was a little choppy and forced but the gameplay was very solid and fluid. It’s the most beautiful game form this generation when it comes to graphics. Just because people don’t agree with the story doesn’t mean this game deserves a zero, the story is just a fraction of a game.

The writing is so terrible, such a shame the original was a classic. The game tries way too hard to push agendas and check mark boxes without having a coherent narrative. The only pros of this game are the graphics and sound design. But gameplay remains the exact same as the original

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The first few hours were compelling and emotionally driven but the other 2/3 of the game purely drags two unispired characters in Ellie and Abby. Ellie has been striped of any personality trait and just becomes this emotionally wreckles train from one scene to the other while Abby is the personification of super woman since she can't be hurt by anything or anyone, the only times she cries it seems very forced and for the rest of her scenes and gameplay there is just not enough weight to carry an emotional compelling story. After dragging me through 16 hours of Abby time I find myself in California trying to finally kill the killer of my favorite character. Only to finish with the character who was suppose to kill her setting her free.

Now I get it, I really get the message, it's powerful but because it reconnects to Joel. That final scene were she can't play the guitar correctly because she lost her two fingers, it was heartbreaking but it needed for her to finish what she started even if it cost her what little humanity she had left. That would've been a devastatingly beautiful ending on this crazy world. But here we are, and to be very clear with this, I don't hate this game, I don't hate Abby or any of the new characters, this is not about hate, it's about dissatisfaction with a story that promised a full arc and only delivered half of it. As Joel very well stated: "I wish things would've been differente but they ain't."

Too bad they happened to be truth. The subpar plot worth Anita's seal of approval, concentrating more so on pushing a message that no asked or cared about, that was in dozens of Hollywood productions known as "revenge bad". Characters acting out of the character for no real reasons, plot feeling dry and uninspired, beloved character being killed and antagonist being left alive leaving us with unsatisfying conclusion to the story. Also, "Humans are real monsters" has to one of the worst messages to push in there considering the setting and the way game plays out with Ellie murdering lots of random people but not being able to kill the very person who killed her adoptive father and also bit off her fingers. The cringe worthy dialogue. Also there is Abby's sex scene in the game created with motion capture, with Owen, character who i can only imagine to be Neil C*ckmann's self insert. Gameplay wise? Is it an redeeming quality? Not at all, if you played any and i mean ANY game created by a mainstream studio you probably already seen it done better somewhere else. Plushol the game itself is way too easy! If you turn on color blind mode you're pretty much set to beat the game with out even trying. For your own sake, i reccomend you not to play this game, it's not satysfying to play for gameplay nor the plot.
Don't be suprised if this and many other negative reviews gets deleted just like with Death Stranding.

The discourse around this game has been toxic due to fan outrage some of the story choices made by Naughty Dog, however I encourage those who might think be hesitant to play this game to go into it with an open mind. IMHO this is not just one of the best video games of the generation but maybe one of the best ever. So ignore the toxicity around this game on the internet and play it for yourself and I guarantee you this game will move you. It’s almost hard to even call this a video game but rather a work of art that will ask uncomfortable questions to you as a player and really causes you to meditate on its themes and message. I hope you enjoy the game as much as I did in my roughly 20 hours of playing it. The game is unique and special with the amount of risks it takes, but I believe Naughty Dog executed, if you willing to come on the ride that Naughty Dog takes you on, you’ll be glad you stuck around to enjoy it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story was engaging and had plenty of heart within it. I thought some of the plot points were great and was a display of how low, revenge can bring us down. The flashbacks shown gave context and filled in the 4 year gap and had some of the most touching parts of the game and contrasted with the visceral and brutal revenge narrative. Gameplay has plenty of freedom when approaching each encounter, exploration felt rewarding as it gave notes for side stories and supplies to help with upgrades, ammo and crafting. World design and level design is phenomenal, the music is somber and but also was blood pumping tensity. My main gripe is the momentum lost at the end of Ellie’s section of the game and switches to Abby’s story, however I became invested with her drama and found her story more interesting than Ellie’s which in the end left me wanting both characters to survive as they both have lost nearly everything. Abby’s section should’ve been trimmed a bit but I understand why it was there. I still really enjoyed the game. 22 hrs of gametime Expand

This game is emotionally impactful, sure, but not for good reasons. Just because you feel things doesn't mean the writing was amazing. Put me behind the pen of any sequel that has beloved characters, and I can pull out a shotgun and make people feel their feelings. Then they altered Joel and Tommy's characters.. then they force you to play as a character you hate, and that character (I find) is intensely unlikable. Then they end it with maybe my least favorite ending since ME3. Imagine the end of God of War 3, Kratos is about to beat Zeus' face into a pulp, but then has a half second flashback of his smiling family, so instead he gently reaches down and caresses Zeus' face, whispering "I forgive you". This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a classic sequel that has the almost impossible ahead of it: to match or, if possible, to overcome the original game. Unfortunately, given the fantastic and complex story that the first game was able to tell, this one would probably not have surpassed this milestone anyway, even if it were flawless - and it is really far from that. My simple verdict on the game is: TLOU 2 is a perfect craftsmanship that pays off for some bad story decisions.

I'll start with what probably bites everyone the most from the beginning: the death of Joel. A lot of people say they don't mind the twist as such, but they are dissatisfied with the circumstances - that an experienced and hardened survivor would not be so foolishly trapped, that he would not tell his name to a gang of armed unknown thugs, and so on… however, I do not agree with this. Joel's name was revealed by Tommy, who had always been a little naive, and I don't think they had any other choice of escaping from the rolling hordes of infected than to trust temporary comrades, albeit foreigners. No, in terms of logic, everything is fine. I'm just bothered with that it even happened.

Joel's relationship with Ellie was at least 90% of all TLOU. That was the magic, the geniality of the story. While playing, I was not looking forward to killing the infected or exploring beautifully depicted natural locations, but to more and more interactions and verbal skirmishes between the two main characters. By destroying this basic pillar, the game loses at least half of the interesting things.

Fortunately, this gloomy hundred-times boiled journey of revenge is saved by a new addition to the party - Dina. Or not? Dina is a well-written and well-drawn character, but she simply does not have the care and kindness uncompromisingly hidden under the mask of Joel's harsh inaccessibility. I didn't enjoy her dialogues with Ellie for the most part, and many times did she seemed to me as a story-imposed love object. And although I wasn't thrilled by it at first, I begin to appreciate the innocent Riley, who had at least some depth of character.

Unfortunately, most of the other characters aren't much better off either. The interesting Maria has practically zero space, Jesse shows up almost halfway through the game and ends just as quickly, the only remaining fighter from the Miller family is moved to the other track and it's a shame to talk about Abby at all - she is perhaps the least likeable character, which I have met so far in the games. So in the end, Ellie has to pull it all by herself again.

The second half of the game focuses on Abby and wants to show us her human side, that not all bad guys are bad and that they have their reasons - which doesn't work for four reasons: (1) Because when you just introduce someone as absolute evil, rotten bastard who beats your brain out of your favorite character, you can't expect everyone to forgive him for a few intentionally touching flashbacks. I just don't want to play as a jerk that I still hate just as much no matter how hard the game tries to make me like it. (2) Because the game tries to convince you by force that everyone who used to be "good" is somehow bad and evil - including Joel and Ellie. In fact, he's trying to make you stop loving Joel, or at least start doubting him. But I don't want to - I don't want anyone to ruin the image I created about him. I don't want to think that Abby´s dad was just an innocent doctor and Joel the bastard who killed him without mercy - he may have been a nice guy, but he was also an idiot who went with a scalpel against an armed man. If he didn't intervene like the other doctors, he could have survived… (3) Because then the game loses even the weak drive it had until then: if Abby isn't bad, then who is the villain? So who do we really want to kill? What do we want to achieve? They are all so terribly forced in shades of gray that the game lacks real evil.

In the whole game, I really liked only flashbacks to Ellie's past - especially "Birthday Gift". That was all I wanted from the game, and I don't think I was alone.

And what about the end? The ending is a chapter in itself, but I'll just say that Neil Druckmann's explanation "We had to let Ellie spare Abby to stay human" comes to me at least smiling. So Ellie kills dozens, hundreds of people along the way - cuts her necks, stabs in the stomach, shoots brains - kills a pregnant woman - but will she stay human if she doesn't kill the biggest scum in the game, which is directly responsible for all her suffering? Somewhere I read the analogy that it is as if Thanos found all the stones, but did not snap. Just whaaat? AT MINIMUM I would give a choice to kill/spare when it already has to be, but I find the ending as it is now a disappointment. The fact that the end of first game came to me as an absolutely brilliant and logical conclusion, perhaps one of the best in video game history, is this a decent armband.

The 2nd part of the game just wasn’t needed, the story just could of finished at a certain point and I didn’t think I’d ever say that about a game. The lighting and graphics are some of the best I’ve ever seen on PS4 but the combat, while better than the first still isn’t great In my opinion.

    Sound - 10/10
Gameplay - 7/10 - The gameplay is good, but is largely remains the same from the first game. There are some small changes, like going prone and crawling when in combat, dodging when in melee combat, and new enemy types such as dogs who can track you and some other infected (but probably not enough)

    Story - 5/10

This game in my opinion is insulting to fans of the first game. If you loved the first Last of Us game, you probably won't like this one. In my opinion, this game needlessly tears down the characters of the first game and what made the first game special.

The game takes place 4-5 years after the end of the first Last of Us. Joel and Ellie live in a settlement in Jackson, Wyoming. About two hours into the game, Joel is killed by a character named Abby with a golf club. This sets the main events of the game into motion as you play as Ellie (for the first half of the game), and hunt down Abby and her friends because of what they did to Joel. Later on in the game it is explained that Abby and her friends are former fireflies and that Abby's father was the doctor who was going to perform the surgery on Ellie at the end of the first game, and that Joel killed him when he saved Ellie. Now I understand that there are two sides to every story and that actions have consequences and that there are moral gray areas, especially in the world of The Last of Us. I get from Abby's perspepctive why she killed Joel, and I get that in many ways Joel had it coming. My problem is that the game handles this issue in a very biased way. Yes Joel saved Ellie and ended any chance of a vaccine for the world. I get that he killed a lot of fireflies, but anyone else in that situation would have done the same thing. Also, realistically, the fireflies took and drugged Ellie and gave her no choice in the matter. He saved someone that he loved. If the fireflies did create a vaccine, then realistically they would have kept it for themselves and not given it to everyone else. Anything that can be such a great use for society is always weaponized in some form. I get that it's a morally complex issue, but my biggest problem with this game is that it portrays Joel, Ellie, and even Tommy in such a negative light in favor of these new characters. If the point of the game is to show it from different perspectives, why is it that it feels as though one side is clearly favored over the other? The game could have explored both sides equally and could have portrayed Joel and Ellie in ways where the end of the first game could have been addressed without spitting on Joel as a character and doing the same to Ellie. After Joel dies, Ellie seeks revenge. You play as Ellie for 3 days in Seattle, and them you are forced to play As Abby for those same 3 days. This is where the game really lost me. During Abby's playthrough, the game feels very manipulative in that it tries desperately to make you like and care for Abby and her friends. Instead of presenting it as an equally fair portrayal of revenge, the game makes Ellie seem like a killing machine who is traumatized by her actions, but then goes out of their way to make Abby seem really nice. I get that Ellie and Joel had the first game to flesh out their characters, but this just feels unfair. Abby also gets better weapons and more epic gameplay moments than Ellie does. Naught Dog lied when they made it seem like Joel would have a bigger part to play in the game, and that this would be more of Ellie's story this time around, but that's not really the case. When I played this game, I had no sympathy at all for Abby and any of her friends in the story. Even if I understand their motivations, I did not care one bit about them as characters. Ellie never even gets revenge against Abby, because after everything that happens in the story, Ellie decides to let Abby go. I'm leaving out some details of the story that I can't get into here because I don't have enough room to type about it, but at the end of the day, my consensus is that The Last of Us Part II is one of the most disappointing games that I have ever played. Do not give Naughty Dog your money for this game. If you are a big fan of the first game, then this isn't for you. The story could have been so much more. Again, this game could have explored the complexities of Joel's choice and Joel and Ellie's relationship after the end of the first game in more detail and exploring the other side of the issue without making it feel so one-sided. And if Joel had to die, his death could have been tied to the end of the first game, while still giving the character some justice. Maybe he does get killed by the fireflies, but he does it in a way to give his life for Ellie or something like that. This game could have been so much more. I would ultimately give it a 6 out of 10 because other than the story everything else is done so well, but the story is just too much of a mess.

It all makes sense. We never see the other side of the story, Abby's dad was the head surgeon that Joel killed saving Ellie, which most of humanity would agree was a selfish decision. A normally good person, Abby becomes angry and revenge-driven, training for the next 4 years to become the person who would kill Joel for what he did, and she finally got her chance and brutally took it. In the time following that, she questions her own humanity and what she's become, she doesn't feel better after killing Joel on the inside, and on the outside, everyone sees her as this monster. She gets an opportunity to redeem herself by helping Yara and Lev, 2 defected Scars, ultimately risking her life by traversing a decades old ground zero hospital with the oldest, deadliest Infected inside and then escaping the Island of the Scars, betraying her own faction in the process. All that to finally come back to the Aquarium and find her best friend (ex-lover) and his baby momma dead, lying in their own blood. Little did she know, all her friends' recent deaths were the consequence of killing Joel in front of Ellie, who had just found a new purpose in her life by making the decision the night before to reconcile with Joel...

Rewind - Joel saves Ellie, lies to her about what happened and they both start a new life in Jackson over the next 4 years. Joel finally confesses to Ellie what he did and for the last 2 years before the events of this game, Ellie doesn't want anything to do with Joel and avoids him. Finally the night before the events of this game, Ellie talks to Joel and despite him taking away her life's "purpose" to potentially become the cure, she still loves him and finds new purpose in choosing to forgive him and start rebuilding their relationship. In comes Abby the next day, who dishes out her long-awaited, brutal revenge against Joel for killing her father, dismantling the Fireflies and potentially robbing humanity of a cure. This event basically "robs" Ellie again of a purpose and she turns into what Abby became all those years ago, angry and revenge-driven. Ellie incites allies and spends the course of the game hunting down all who were present at Joel's death, killing many of Abby's friends along the way (and her dog), including a woman she didn't know was pregnant, which made Ellie sick to her stomach.

Fast Forward - Abby, feeling redeemed from brutally killing Joel by helping Yara and Lev, finds her best friend (ex-lover) and his baby momma dead, lying in their own blood. She tracks Ellie back to the theater and becomes rage-fueled again, cause from her perspective, Joel was the bad guy and got what he deserved and she let Ellie live, not knowing Ellie would come after her and kill all her friends. During the confrontation, she kills Jessie, shoots Tommy in the face, beats Ellie to a pulp, and if not for Lev reminding her of her own humanity, she would have slit a pregnant Dina's throat, as payback for her dead pregnant friend. Ultimately, she let's Dina and Ellie live, and leaves with Lev to Santa Barbara to find the Fireflies.

Fast Forward even more - Ellie, still experiencing PTSD and feeling she owes Joel by killing Abby, travels to Santa Barbara. Abby doesn't want to fight anymore, but Ellie insists, thinking it's the only way she can be at peace and avenge Joel. In the end, Ellie is about kill Abby, but decides not to, ending the cycle of violence after realizing that Abby's death won't "fix" anything for her and reminding herself of forgiveness i.e. Joel. Abby and Ellie go their separate ways.

Joel murdered Abby's dad saving Ellie,
then Abby murders Joel in front of Ellie,
then Ellie murders most of Abby's friends,
then Abby murders Jessie, shoots Tommy in the face and almost murders a pregnant Dina, but decides not to,
then Ellie almost murders Abby, but decides not to, ending their cycle of violence.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and graphics are well done. This is the best looking game on the PS4. The sound design is also great, but the characters and story are terrible and I never thought that this would be the product we got after waiting for 7 years. Joel, the beloved protagonist in the first game is killed off within the first 2 hours of the game and he only gets 10-15 minutes of screentime. How does Joel get killed? Well, he and Tommy rescue this girl named Abby and head back to where her group is staying at to escape from the infected horde that attacked them. For some reason, they think it is a good idea to tell this group of strangers that they just met their names, their relation, where they live, and even invite them over to restock on supplies. But in the first game, Joel doesn't trust anyone and even ran over a guy who faked from being hurt. Also, in the first game, when Ellie met David she doesn't trust him at all even after they survive an infected horde attacking them. So apparently Joel and Tommy have lost their survivor instincts and trust anyone they come across and tell them everything about themselves and invite them over. Well turns out that this gets Joel killed because the girl he rescued from the horde wanted to kill him. She kills him with a golf club while Ellie watches her and begs her not to do it. And for some reason, they decide not to kill Tommy or Ellie despite knowing Tommy just told them that Joel was his brother and knowing Ellie was somehow close to Joel because how Ellie begs Abby to spare his life and reacts to his death. The only reason why the writers didn't kill off Ellie and Tommy here is because they have a story to tell. I cannot believe how bad this writing is so far. Anyway, Ellie wants revenge and travels to Seattle so she can "KIll every last one of them." She does kill every person involved in Joel's death except Abby who was the one who actually killed Joel. She had the chance to kill Abby, but she decides to let her go because she thinks revenge is bad now. Imagine playing God of War 3 and Kratos is trying to get revenge on the Greek Gods for doing him wrong. He kills every god except Zeus who was the main one he wanted to kill. Zeus is almost dead and Kratos is like "No, I'm done. You can go." Or your watching John Wick and John Wick goes after the guy who stole his car and killed his puppy. He kills about a hundred people and when he gets to the guy who stole his car and killed his puppy and is about to kill him he is like "No, I'm good." and walks away. That is the ending of The Last Of US 2. Also, the game makes you play as Abby and tries to show you she is a good person. They make you try to feel sorry for her, but it fails so hard because you don't care about her since she killed Joel. I like how they make Abby seem like she's the good character and Ellie is evil, but Abby gets her revenge when Ellie doesn't. Really? Everyone would think the exact opposite. The game's message is trying to teach you revenge is bad and it'll cause pain and push everyone away from you. But again it fails because Abby got her revenge and got what she wanted at the end of the game which was to go off with a boy she met named Lev and Ellie doesn't get her revenge but she loses everything which was her girlfriend Dina, the baby that Dina had with her ex, Tommy, Joel, 2 of her fingers, and the ability to play the guitar. The ending literally contradicts the message the story is trying to tell you. The writing is a joke. I will not buy part 3 if they ever make one, I will never trust critic reviews again, and if they decide to make Uncharted 5 I will not buy it until I see reviews of it by other gamers and not trust the reviews by critics. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’ve never felt so emotionally challenged or invested in a game than when I played the Last of Us Part II. I found myself crying at multiple points in the game, often being moved during a scene as simple as Joel playing the guitar to a young Ellie. I was often forced to do heinous things as Ellie, and I somehow managed to be Team Abby by the end of the game. I even had to put it down for a few days when the game switched to playing as Abby because I didn’t know how you could reasonably expect me to play as the killer of a man as beloved as Joel. But the further I got along in the game, the more and more I came to sympathize with Abby. Ultimately, all characters in the game were deeply flawed, but you still loved all of them in their own way. In the end, I recognized the senselessness of the cycle of violence and the importance of making a conscious decision to end it. And I have to say I have never felt so emotional in a finale. I’ll never forget the deep grief I felt as I was attacking Abby and the ultimate catharsis of letting her escape with Lev. Please do yourself a favor and play this game. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m going to keep this short and simple. The gameplay, graphics and level design are great. The story, however, is pure drivel. Killing off Joel was a bold move, I’ll give the writers that. The death needed to be earned, but the writers failed at this epically. Playing the first half of the Ellie arc was decent storytelling and progression. A revenge tail that I was invested in. The second half of the game was a slog. I hated Abby and every character in the second half was contrived and boring. I didn’t care about a single one of them. The only joy I got was when Abby would die (sometimes I would just let it happen). The ending is one of the worst in video game history. Ellie murders hundreds of people and a dog you are forced to kill, but doesn’t kill Abby at the end...GTFO! Leaves her girlfriend (the only part of the story i liked was their relationship) and baby to get one final chance at revenge. Goes through hell again only to free Abby, immediately try to kill her and then almost as quick let her go. I’ve seen failed tv pilots with more story arc and a satisfy finish then this poorly written garbage. Naughty Dog should have hired real writers (movie script, novels) to finish this game. Anybody who tells you this story is more then drivel is simple in the brain period. Expand

Based on trophy statistics, only 25% of players (as of 6/27/2020) have finished the game. Let that sink in while you read this...

    - If you are looking for a game that gives the player the choice to change the outcome, this isn't for you.

    - Want a game that's wrapped up nicely with a bow that leaves you feeling the stress and tension resolved? Definitely not your game.

Last of Us Part II is a story of revenge and its consequences, pain and regret. It doesn't pull any punches, and doesn't let the player feel like the "good guy" for their actions. There are no true heroes or villains, every person in the game has their story and life. So many games have you playing a protagonist you're meant to live vicariously through. They make you feel like you're the hero, and any dire actions you must make to achieve your goal is justified by what you've set out to accomplish.

One of the biggest points of controversy in this story is actually why I praise it so much. Having the player see first hand the consequences of their actions gives wait to the story's message. Just because you like a character and have spent so much time with them doesn't mean they are inherently good, just as playing against another character doesn't make them bad. Ellie and Abby have both hurt innocent people and have brutally murdered at the expense of the innocent. They have also helped their enemies, friends, and strangers. These characters are human, they are imperfect. Not heros. Not villains.

Let's tackle the elephant in the room: Joel's death. I felt this wan inevitable. Joel is the sole reason the world does not have a cure. The Fireflies wanted it, Ellie wanted it, but he couldn't let it happen. Just because he was (relatively) good to Ellie doesn't mean he is safe from the world around him. Eventually his actions were bound to catch up to him, and it just happened sooner than most players expected.

I won't dive into the technical aspects of the game, as it seems everyone agrees that this is a visual masterpiece. Gameplay is solid, and players are given solid choices to be as stealthy or violent as they care to be. I'm not gonna touch the "SJW" non-controversy as it in no way detracts from the game, and it's a lazy argument primarily made by those that actually haven't finished the story.

I highly recommend the game. I do feel like there's a bit of room to expand upon stealth, and that's the only reason I don't give it a perfect 10.

this game is not about sjw or lgtb. it's about emptiness after losing a loved one. it's about anger and rage. it's about being blood thirsty. it's about empathy and lives. it's about redemption. and most important thing is, it's about legacy.

Если уже всё так плохо, а все пишут, что кал в конце - проходить полностью точно не стоит.Ждал игру с момента прохождения 1 части. Купил на релизе, поиграл 7 часов, поставил 2. Gotta say, i'm dissapointed. Just got 10 hours into the game, and i just can't continue. The story is horribly, character are just thrown out of the window and the game play is still bland and repetitive. This just doesn't feel as a good sequel, more like The Last of Us 0.

The gameplay was refined but I'm still not the biggest fan somehow. The cycle of human enemies, exploration, zombie enemies, action sequence and emotional flashback are varied but felt formulaic overall, maybe because of the linear nature of the game.

The story was good for a videogame story, lots of progression, but I did not like all the timejumps. Also some things were not that believable to me and it is in conflict with the gameplay. And in the end it felt kind of pointless, even though many differnt things happened.

But overall it is a very refined game with lots of varied settings.

Most claims I heard about the game were either false or seriously dumb. I promise you that any game could have been hurt with this much hate coming at it before it even arrived. If this game is too much for the community, that's just sad. It's the most emotionally and narratively complex game I ever played and it deserves praise for being different, not hate.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was a weird experince for me. The gameplay was enjoyable and I found a 8/10 or a 9/10 for me. The graphics were great and i would give them a 9/10. The story was maybe a 7/10 experience for me, the start and the middle of the game were fine, but the ending i didn’t really like. (now there will be spoilers) The ending would have been way better if the game just ended on Dina and Ellie living happy lives but the part of the story where Ellie went to hunt Abby down was in my opinion very unnecessary. The fact that Ellie didn’t even kill Abby made it even more pointless, and in my opinion that part of the story could have been completely left out. The ending was unnecessarily bad when we could have had, like i said before a happy ending with Ellie and Dina living happy lives. Expand

People are used to heroic deaths, dramatic and with excessive tributes in a certain way they are easier to adopt since they are fictional and children's stories, but this game, being more realistic, shows that it does not matter who you are or what you have done, the Death can come in essential and unimaginable ways and above all it shows that your actions have consequences. I dare say that for this type of detail this second installment surpasses the first, however due to the different endings many prefer TLOU1. Regarding the end, whether the objective of revenge has been fulfilled or not, the end, whatever it may be, will remain the same, a sad and empty end, which shows us what can cause our desires for revenge; We hurt, affect and lose people, we move them away from us and even worse, we ourselves lose the essence that characterized us as human beings or, as people, revenge will certainly not make things change or improve much less will cause your story is better, you cannot change what happened and the best signature to pay tribute to someone is being that all that. This game is exactly the same as the first installment, a death at the beginning and a trip totally in vain due to grief.
The game is really good, I could say it is a work of art. The gameplay, gameplay, mechanics, graphics, is superior to many games, I dare say that the best game of the moment.
Lastly, I am sure that many of those who gave a negative opinion have not even bought the game, obviously much less have played it, and all this controversy seems to me to be due to the large number of spoilers that some streamers emitted with inconclusive, erroneous and confusing information, You are the ones who can try it, play it, and have your own opinions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing and beating TLOU2 I came to the conclusion that I can never get excited for anything else again. Thinking that naughty dog was about to release an absolute banger I played it and my god that was 23 hours of pure misery. That ending has left the worst taste in my mouth far worse then Game of Thrones. Ellie was so unlikable in this game opposed to the last, Dani I think is one of the worst written characters in the history of fiction being told. Jesse was an awesome character whom they get rid of a little less then halfway through the game. I’m not gonna rag on Joel aside from the fact that him following into the church is almost a direct contradiction to everything Joel told Ellie in the first game. The only part of the entire story I liked was how they tied Abby into the fireflies and why she killed Joel (although I didn’t like her killing Joel) the next naughty dog game I will not preorder I’ll have to wait for it to come out before I consider purchasing one of their titles again. I really hoped some people enjoyed it but 3/5 of my friends who have beat the game have borderline hated the ending and the entire story. I thought people were overreacting to the games story before I had beat it but I’ve seriously never been so disappointed, crushed and sad in my entire life by a game being so utterly ridiculous. The traumatic event that drives the narrative forward relies on changing the nature of already established characters. In the middle of the game there is a 10 hour section that will be tough to play/borderline unplayable for many fans of the first game The ending is completely devoid of logic

There are major retcons/reframing of the end of the first game which the writers expect you to just forget about. Terrible pacing and some cringey dialogue. Side characters are nowhere near as interesting as in the first game.

A main character has a ridiculous character model given the games’ world which ruins immersion. Not to mention terribly misleading, immoral marketing of the game which sells the game as something resembling what fans want, only to pull the rug from under them in the worst way.

Naughty Dog and Sony should be ashamed of this.

¿Propaganda? De ningún modo.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's hard to recall a game that made me as emotionally invested as the last of us 2. It's all down to a narrative that can only find it's true footing in video games, as it's predecessor the plot drives the story forward but it twists it's ending via character development.

There are a few things I can safely say before spoiling any of the story so I will just point out a few characteristics of the game:

Naughty Dog has improved once again on it's combat mechanics, the fight and flight approach has been enhanced and it's at the core of the last of us 2 gameplay. It gives you many tools to accomplish your goals and in doing so offers players many ways to approach combat. If you enjoyed the combat in games like Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us, the combat here will feel even fresher and better.

I don't care so much about graphics, but this game is impressive in it's presentation. It pushes PS4 to it's limit and delivers environments filled with details bringing a sense of immersion to the player. The cutscenes are impressive and they help hammer the narrative home.

    SPOILERS FROM HERE ONWARDS

It's impossible to speak about the story without going into spoiler territory so here it goes: From the beginning of the journey you find yourself in a revenge story, one of our favourite characters in gaming history, Joel, is killed by Abby a freshly introduced character that we briefly get to play. The game then sets you and Abby down an intersecting path, where you are pitted against each other for revenge. When you finally find her the game takes a huge break to set you in the shoes of Abby, we play as her for a long time and we start to understand her a little by little.

Thanks to the unique ways that games can tell stories, we slowly see how Abby herself starts to grow on us, we see that much like Joel she is jaded and going through the motions after experiencing grief. Through saving a couple of scars we see her humanity and start to strongly empathize with her as a character.

I initially doubted this was going to work for me, at first I felt so much rage playing through Ellie's story, but when I was in Abby's shoes she started to slowly grow on me, from saving Lev and Yara, seeing her relationship with her dad, going to an infected zone to secure medical supplies, beating a huge monstrosity; I finally understood better the side of her story.

At the end I didn't want Ellie or Abby to die and I wanted each one to have a good life. I felt I went through a lot emotionally and it's all thanks to an ambitious narrative that pays off.

To some of the criticism that I've seen:

LGBTQ+ agenda: I don't think there is a political stand on this, the game is just portraying sexuality how it is. To anyone complaining that LGBT characters are only present in the sequel, I have to remind them of Bill who is clearly gay in part 1 and the DLC also shows Ellie's story and she's always been into girls.

Narrative: I understand those who feel like Joel death was too much, I think that is the reason that the game set you emotionally on the same revenge path as Ellie and it worked incredibly well for me. Joel death is caused by his past actions, not only killing the doc and the fireflies but also the fact that he gets softer through the story of the Last of Us, through caring for Ellie, till the point that trusting other people causes him to lose his life.

The ending worked incredibly well for me, the fact that the plot doesn't finish with Ellie killing Abby is a a great subversion of expectation, we as players don't want to see Abbie die, and it's Joel's memories that stop her. In the end because of the fight with Abby she loses her ability to play guitar, but it's maybe what she needed in order to learn to live with the past. In a weird way it's thanks to Ellie that Abby and Lev end up surviving and we are weirdly thankful for it.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
