This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Playing as Abby added no emotion (for me at least). I did not empathise with her because no matter her losses. Therefore, making her part playable was completely unnecessary due to the fact that we did not want to hear her story. Moreover, the ending was not satisfying at all, it was more disappointing really. No wonder naughty dog lost 70% of their staff Expand

Hard and miserable, what a bad taste in your mouth leaves you. But its amazing.
Enganging story, a bit longer than I would like, some ups and downs in the story, but reflects what a real story could be, people dying easily in a miserable world.
    Has ludonarrative dissonance.

I really don’t know how they managed to **** this up, they had 7 years, 7 ****ing years, and they came up with this story, this horrible story. What a shame. The gameplay what okay, the graphics was also good, but this is a game that focuses heavily on the story, if you **** that up, then there’s no point of playing.

If you fell in love with the first game DO NOT ever play this one. TLOU2 actively seeks to destroy everything that made the original so great. It’s full of cheap, hollow, and manipulative story telling that’ll leave you feeling empty and asking yourself why. I wish I had taken other people’s warnings before buying this.

First of all, my own thoughts.
The game is one of a kind, comparing to everything else out there. The gameplay mechanics are amazing, a step up from the first part in all ways. I like how they kept the core gameplay elements of the first part and then added more elements like new combat mechanics and also some new platforming elements, similar to what we saw in UC4. I like how they kept the core gameplay elements of the first part and then added more elements like new combat mechanics and also some new platforming elements, similar to what we saw in UC4. The combat is brutal which makes it realistic. Some kills feel satisfactory some make you sorry, especially when it comes to killing dogs in this game. This sort of feeling that makes you question your own humanity is a huge part of what makes this game great. There are no good or bad characters, there are people who make decisions based on their own need to survive in this brutal and unforgiving world ND has created for us. The whole LGBT aspect in the game didn't feel pushed at all. If that is what ruined the game for you than i feel sorry for you.
As a survival horror game it truly delivered. Resources are scarce on higher difficulties, both human and infected enemies are scary as hell, especially in the darker enviroments.
Overall the story was amazing. Sad, but amazing at the same time. It gave you a bitter feeling, but also a tiny bit of hope. Because that was what ND intended.
I highly recommend you to play the game fully yourself and not judge it from streams or spoiler reviews. This game has to be played by yourself to enjoy and fully undesrtand it. 10/10 would replay agian and again.

The Last of Us (2013) is one of my favourite, if not my absolute favourite, games of all time. It had a phenomenal cast, writing, score, world-building, and atmosphere. However, the now 7 year old game is a rough play these days - the gameplay which was mediocre at the time, feels very dated by today's standards.

Enter The Last of Us Part II. The game is an improvement in every single way. The cast is even better, with incredible performances from old favorites and new characters. Whilst the first game had strong methodology to its storytelling, the actual story itself was fairly predictable and didn't really tread new ground; the presentation of that story was what carried it. TLoU2 tells a more unique story - one that is less relatable than the father-daughter dynamic explored in the first, but less 'safe' and more intriguing as a result. I fell in love with the new characters, who are incredibly well written and performed. Then there's the gameplay. This game plays very, very well. The gunplay is weighty and satisfying, and the melee combat is brutal and less button-mashy than the first game, with a much welcomed dodge mechanic. Movement if fluid, and the transition between character animations is buttery smooth. I often found myself breaking stealth intentionally just so I could experience the thrill of gunfights, although often the gunfights began simply because the AI is a lot better at noticing you than in most games. I have nothing but praise for this redesigned AI - they can spot you from further away than you'd expect, and just because you're crouching in tall grass doesn't make you invisible, but I never felt like the AI was cheating either. Once combat begins, they push you aggressively, coordinating with each other to flank you from multiple angles which makes combat genuinely challenging, and not by simply making them deal lots of damage or being blessed with divine accuracy. They call out one another's names when a comrade falls, and writhe in pain on the floor when your hunting rifle takes an arm off.

Naughty Dog has created a triumph of a game, and one that has very quickly dethroned the previous game and God of War as my favourite game of all time. I thoroughly look forward to the release of the multiplayer, whenever that may be.

The story, even if it has some holes and some may not love it, makes the player go throw a journey that words just can't describe. This is an amazing work of art, ND has done amazing work and took some crazy risks.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. SPOILERS

First things first, this game has been dividing fans immensely, given by the rift between critic and fan reviews.
With that out of the way, here's my take on the story, the controversy and the game. Spoilers ahead for game 1 and 2 ahead.

Already in the first game, Naughty Dog has tried to establish that no conflict is ever black and white. During multiple times in the story, Joel's dark past is hinted at.
    -He's a smuggler
-Tess literally said "We're **** people, Joel."
-He's been on "both sides" of an ambush
-Obliterates the last branch of humanity looking to find a cure in order to save his surrogate daughter.
Sadly, much like the 2nd game, the hostile factions we encounter as a player are always presented as "evil"
-the military acting killing anyone who's not compliant
-looters who shoot first, ask questions later
-a group of survivors (with kids), who kill and eat people
It is only towards the end where we see Joel lash out against the "good", presented in form of the fireflies.
The game ended with Joel's thinly woven lie that the fireflies have stopped looking for a cure.

Game 2 confronts the player with the consequence of our actions. Joel's past catches up with him in form of Abby, who exacts revenge on Joel for what he did to the fireflies and her father (the surgeon he killed to save Ellie). And like the old "an eye for an eye" principle, Ellie sets out to exact revenge on Joel's killers.

What TLOU II pulls off what TLOU I didn't is that it showed conflicts from both sides. We get to play as both Ellie and Abby- bitter rivals, as you may say- and learn their motivations and loves and grudges. It tried portraying the moral grey conflicts that they were trying to convey in the first game too, just this time they took a more direct approach. Players may find upsetting that their idols may not be as heroic and "white-vested" as they may have thought.

Another box of criticism this game has received was the hate for LGBTQ-inclusion, as well as its portrayal.
Firstly, if you feel offended by the inclusion of queers in a video game, then the game isn't the problem: You are. Your values have gone out of fashion in the 1950s, so go with the time and stop living in the past. Almost every video game in existence features a straight, white man in the lead, with only recent examples. The few female protagonists like Lara Croft were merely sexually idolised.
Secondly, some hate came from transgender people as well, stating that the trans character in the game was, for a fact, merely abused and tortured. While the portrayal of the game's trans character is in no way perfect, I believe it is a major first step towards inclusion and representation of our LGBTQ friends and allies in the video game industry. Perhaps the first step is shaky and bad, but that's what first steps are there for. Personally, I give props to Naughty Dog for finally having the guts to take the first step.
The queers in TLOU II didn't feel like a major "distraction" from the story. They aren't a major talking point. Not until you make it. Learn to live with it. Deal with it.

So of course the game is being review-bombed for the aforementioned problems. Yet they do not take into consideration the thousands of other departments of the game that made it stand out as much as it did.
The programming- from rope physics to animation to enemy AI- is OUTSTANDING and truly unique. Every encounter was a fun to test out, every environment remarkable.
The sound design deserves props as well. Never have the infected- clickers especially- sounded more spine-chilling and DANGEROUS than they have in this game. For the first time, clickers actually sounded like a threat not to be ignored.
And of course, the actors have done an incredible job at bringing Ellie, Dina, Abbie etc to life. Bravo.

While the story isn't perfect and a few characters felt a little bleak (looking at you, Jesse), it is far from what the majority make it out to be.

If you can have an open mind and dive into this game, it is well worth the time and dedication.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game has crazy good lighting, the graphics are astounding, and the music is so good. This is truly next gen stuff here. However the writing could use some work; the flashbacks are really good though it truly has the spirit of the first game. Now everything that happens in the present is not as good. You can tell early on in the game where it just doesn't sound normal like it's forced in a way. Also some of the characters just do some stuff that isn't in there nature. They try so hard for you to sympathize with Abby, but it's hard to. I know that Naughty Dog can write incredible stories, and I think that's one of the main reasons it got so much hate. Now I wouldn't call it a bad game because it isn't. I also wouldn't call it the best game it's an average game. If it wasn't for the visual, and music part of the game then it would have flopped for sure. Also it's not the actors fault, so stop attacks them. They did the best with what they had. Expand

I understand that there is a time jump, but some of the character's motivations made no sense to me. At the same time, I understand the source for Abby's revenge, but it fell flat due to no proper build up to sympathize with her. As far as Ellie, she is obviously justified in her revenge, but at the end of the day, there is no pay off. To subvert player expectations just to make a point that revenge will leave you nothing is, in my honest opinion, not great for video game storytelling. You do not want to alienate your fan base, because the trust they had in you is now broken. Now, when I see these writers attached to future products, I will have to think twice about purchasing their game, as the trust is now broken. The game is stunning in visual aspects, the game play is tweaked a bit(but not that different) from the first game, but as a writer, I expected a 5-Star Michelin steak dinner, and I feel like I was given a hamburger from McDonalds. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There have been, and will be a lot of bad games in the history of gaming. Some are incomplete, some has boring gameplay, some carries unbearable bugs, etc. But TLOU2 is really a bad game of its own league. It is such a fine-crafted game. It inherits the gameplay of its prequel and adds many details to it. The guitar playing is great, the movements are so smooth, details when killing the enemies are impressive... It almost has all I need to call it "the game of PS4".

But the core of TLOU is that it tells a story. It's not a game like the Witcher 3 where you have different consequences to your different choice. It's not a game like Super Mario Odyssey where the gameplay without any plot. TLOU strikes me as one of my (before I walked into this piece of garbage called TLOU2) because it tells a great story to me, a story that I can feel and love the characters. I do not agree with Joel's decision at the end of the TLOU but I can understand because along with the game I come to love Ellie too.

Then there comes the TLOU2. A game that tells you a story of your most beloved person cruelly killed in front of you. You go to half of the country to find and kill and the murderer. Guess what? She kills your friend in front of you and now you play as her!

The second half of this game is the worst gaming experience I have ever had. You have to play this person you hate. The second half would be totally fine if Abby wasn't the person who cruelly killed Joel. If she's just some unrelated person and this is called TLOU: another story or what so ever, I would like it. Instead, Neil and Naughty Dog decide to make us players feel Abby and her deep, complicated story. It almost feels like Neil is this arrogant person who want to lecture us in a philosophy or literature course. No matter how the game tells a full, well-rounded story about Abby, I can never like this character. The time playing as her feels worst. It denies everything I loved about TLOU.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. TL:DR - Neil Druckmann wrote this for himself and not the fans and prioritized inclusiveness over story.

I'd like to start this review by saying that I was well aware of all the leaks prior to the release of this game. I, like a lot of fans, was pretty furious at the whole situation but decided I'd bite the bullet and buy the game anyway - after all experiencing a game for yourself is an entirely different experience to watching a playthrough.

Gameplay-wise this game is a slight rehash of the previous installment - with a few creature comforts such as the dodge button (which on normal difficulty doesn't have much of an impact but on higher difficulties is essential). I enjoyed the added feature of dogs, which made the combat encounters feel slightly less repetitive and the new weapons were also a cool addition. For a "zombie type game" I felt there was definitely a bigger focus on the human enemies (which I don't have a problem with however I feel the infected should have had a larger presence in the game).

Puzzles within the game were pretty similar to the first - with the added rope mechanic to change things up as well as the safe combinations. I felt there was way more that could've been done to actually push the player into thinking a bit more, as these puzzles felt way too easy.

The game does a beautiful job in creating an environment that will always lead you in the right direction. This is hard to explain without experiencing for yourself, but I'll try my best. The game will lead you towards a locked door for example, forcing you to turn around after finding out it's locked. When you turn around, you'll realize you've walked past a vent which you can climb into thus leading you back on track. The level designers are amazing at their job and should be praised for this. In addition to this, although this game is very much linear, it does an amazing job at tricking you into thinking otherwise. The levels are much larger allowing for a lot more exploration than in the first game which helped keep things from getting boring. In terms of graphics, this game is absolutely beautiful, however this is expected from a triple A studio such as Naughty Dog. Nonetheless credit where credit is due.

Now the story - I have very mixed opinions. From the start of this game, it is clear there is a political agenda. There is an extremely large focus on inclusiveness for a large amounts of ethnic and sexual orientations which is great - these groups deserve recognition in video games. My problem with this is when it has no benefit for the game other than to meet a checklist for inclusiveness (which is definitely what this feels like). For example, early within the game there is a scene where Ellie and Dina find themselves within a synagogue. This level seemed like a lesson on Jewish beliefs rather than serving purpose to the story. Yes Dina is Jewish - but why do we need to know this when it literally has no purpose other than in this scene in the entirety of the game after this. After playing this game for yourself - you'll understand where I'm coming from - this happens a number of times.

Joel is killed off early in the game by Abby (the daughter of a doctor Joel killed in the first game). I am fine with this decision - in fact I expected it before the leaks happened. My problem with this is that there wasn't enough interaction between Ellie and Joel before this happened. It would've made more sense to let us play a few hours with Ellie and Joel together (allowing fans to reminisce about our experience of the first game), then have the whole argument between the two, and then Joel's death. Joel's character was completely watered down from a cautious character who would never give his name to anyone, to a complete idiot with no character development in between. This would've been fine if there was that development.

Playing as Abby was probably the worst decision to make. I'm sure most fans would never sympathize with her no matter how good of a person she is portrayed to be or what good deeds she has done. The only reason I somewhat enjoyed the Abby portion of this game (which is around 10 hours) was the better weapons she had over Ellie. I would like to add that Abby's part of the game would've been better had it been released as DLC rather than in the main story. This would've made more sense as it would've given us her side of the story separately without forcing players who loved the Ellie and Joel dynamic to play 10 hours as Joel's killer unwillingly. I felt no sympathy towards Lev, just because of his association to Abby.

The ending was a straight kick in the face to the last 20-30 hours of the game. Ellie decides to let Abby go, after killing hundreds of people to get to her. This decision just seems misplaced and doesn't make any sense, just as Ellie realizes killing is bad. It's a shame because this game could have redeemed itself yet it sticks with a cliche ending

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That ending, though. It was all good, but... that ending, though.

The game does such a good job, such a GOOD JOB of Ellie's story. Yes, Joel's death is nasty and brutal, and that puts a lot of people off. But it gets to such a high point of tension...

And then you're playing the other side. And in moments, you find out why they did what they did. But it doesn't end. Nope, you have to play forwards to where you left off with Ellie. And you think "hey, what a way to end it".

But that's not the end, not even close.

A lovely epilogue follows, and you think "cool, nice of it to let me enjoy this moment of peace and calm after all that horror".

And then it makes THAT horror. And the game continues. You're back to Abby, desperately searching for remnants of a happier past. And that sinking feeling you have by this point - that every character that gets introduced gets theirs, horribly and brutally - gets realised, again. And then you're Ellie, in the same place, and it feels... off. Like, "huh? But why?" off. And then BAM, that feeling is back and realised. Again.

And THAT'S not the ending either.

Nope, somehow and beyond reason at this point, you slog on. And you watch as the story just... falls apart. "But if that's how that story ends, why did they do that just moments before?" you'll think, and then it gives you a cutscene to remind you:

There is no happiness in this world. Not for the characters. Not for you.

It's just, well, frustrating that a game goes to such great lengths to make you care, actually care, about a selection of characters. And then it kills that care off, at length, by doing the same thing again and again - hurting them to try make you care more. To the point where, any character it shows you caring for, you think "I wonder what kills them brutally in front of my character?" It just ends so sour, and more to the point it just makes zero sense for what has happened up until then. Just... why? It was all over. Why do that? After doing what you did?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Filmkörnung, Motion Blur, Depth of Field etc. ...

If you rate it less than 5, you are most likely a butthurt 15-year old, whose brain is not (hopefully yet) developed to accept that his favorite character has just been pounded like a schnitzel during Christmas time by one of the ugliest female characters in the history of gaming, and then if it wasn't enough, you probably start crying over the fact that the developers made this character your new main one.
If you don't like it, try to grow up and understand how a move like this breaks all the clichés and stereotypes in modern storytelling and adds so much needed originality to a genre that's now only being mindlessly recycled.
TLOU has always been an R-rated game about people being pushed to their limits causing shocking situations for most of the players, and the events from Part Two used the potential created by this rating as almost nothing ever before. If you don't like it, you can always go back to your Fortnite comfort zone, where you can be sure this won't ever happen.

After finishing the game this is what I can say about it.
No SJW propaganda to be found. In fact all of the LGBT stuff is handled miserably.

The premise still suck. A random daughter of a random NPC seeks revenge and it takes her 6 years to find out and conveniently they meet each other.
This game contains a lot of useless scenes which only purpose is the shock-value, but there's no substance behind them. For example, a dog is killed and characters make a big deal out of it for 2 seconds! Yep, 2 seconds. After this, everything is forgotten.
"ThIs WoMaN wAs/Is PrEgNanT aNd You ShOuLd FeEl BaD aBoUt It!!!1!" used at least 3 times.
It's not like everyone in the The Last of Us universe is a piece of **** who has killed countless of other people.
Another character (jesse) dies, and he's forgotten immediately only to be mentioned again in few sentences just to underline "hey, we haven't forgotten him!!!".

The plot overall would have been fine if not for pathetic inconsistencies and an invisible hand moving the strings.
For example. Joel becomes a clueless idiot for the sake of drama. This guy barely trusted himself in the first game, but now writers want you to believe he has softened over the past 5 years.
Which again, would make sense. Too bad that the apocalypse is still going on you know, even if the game has forgotten about it.
For real, infected are just random NPCs now. Nobody cares about them, nobody seem to look for a solution (funny, huh?). The apocalypse doesn't even exists.

Abby is a professional sniper when the plot wants (I'm not even exaggerating, she kills Jesse with one shot to the head after he enters a room running!!!), but becomes 100% clueless when she has to kill Ellie and Tommy.
How do we call this? Yes, plot armor. Literally, Abby wants to kill Tommy but for whatever reason she doesn't. It happens 3 times.
Ellie wants to kill Abby but for whatever reason she doesn't.
    And so on.
Not to mention that Abby seems The Rock or a bootleg wrestler depending on what the writers are trying to accomplish. Which is to say that they don't even know what they're after if in one scene her strenght is brutal, and in the other she can't do ****.

The ending. Boy oh boy, what a crap one. Look, I don't even care if Ellie lets Abby live, but ffs, in 2020 you can't come up with something better than the most pathetic cliché ever?
    Basically "omG, rEvEnGe Is BaD".
Freaking hell!!!! You've killed hundreds of people, and you realize it at the end through a flashback?

I've seen some people justifying this with "Ellie suffers from PTSD". What's this? Another case of "let's look what Lara Croft does?".
But anyway: are you for real?
She was 13 in the first game when a freak tried to rape her. It took her 6 years to develop PTSD?
    LMAO @ this.

Gameplay is basically an improved version of the first game. Movements are more fluid, but still nothing to write home about.
    Jumps still feel clunky/scripted.
Animations are top notch as usual.
Mechanics are still the same. Which is the most baffling thing, because they were outdated even in 2013.
IA is much better. Although, as usual, no peripheral vision whatsoever: and this is very easy to exploit. If you move fast enough when you're in close range, basically the gameplay becomes ridiculous. Because enemies have trouble spotting you and their reaction time is slow when up-close.
Level design is excellent in the arenas. Otherwise it's just the usual "follow this line".

On the long run, the gameplay becomes repetitive. I mean, it took me 23 hours to finish the game and the second half still plays the same as the first one (if you are a stealth player that is).

TL;DR good gameplay, good level design, mediocre writing, uninspired plot.
Certainly not the 95/100 (huge WTF) "professional" want you to believe. Not even close to be a 9/10.

Ellie's journey is based on hate - then you're given a new perspective of someone on a redemption arc. Trying to build and repair relationships of everyone around said person. It's a stark comparison to Ellie's motivations of the game. It actually begs the question of who is the true "bad guy" here. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off! The game looks and sounds fantastic! The only complaint here is the somewhat flickery frame rate. Especially when you pan the camera around the caracter, and therefore more annoying in fight scenes.

(i played on a ps4 pro) It took me 26 hours to finish the game.
It's easily one of the best looking games on the platform, and sometimes visually reminds me of Red Dead Redemption 2 I am one of those that did not bother to read or watch anything about the leaked films or story spoilers. This is why things took a turn for the worse 3 hours in fpor me. You see.. im not a hateful bigoted person. I have no problems whatsoever with any of the HBTQ topics of this game or other games. What i do have a problem with in story driven games like last of us is a poorly written story. The story and plot in The Last Of Us Part 2 is filled with confusing annoying jumps between caracters, plot holes, and the new caracters are some of the most boring lot of people to ever to emerge in a AAA title. Joel was the hero of this game, and to have him beaten to death by some caracters and then let Abby (boring caracter that looks like a mix between Hulk Hogan and a hockey mom) that beats him to death be a playable caracter får a big part of the remaining game. That alone is just a spit in the face for the fans of the series. From there on the game is just repetitive for 22 hours, and some big parts so bad i allmost fell asleap. No pusdle solving.. Just killing people in a repetitive way.. The ending is really stinkin bad aswell.. Why a beautiful grandiose game like this gets a stressed poorly written storyline like this beats me? Don't kill the hero after 2 hours in such a meaningless way.. You dont kill Mario, You dont kill Lara Croft, you dont kill Joel and replace him with a bunch if people with ZERO character. It's quite obvious that parts of naughty dog got infiltrated by a leader with a woke agenda, and wanted to stir things up a bit. That's not the problem here. You could have made a story that fits your morals and agenda without f*cking up the entire game.. But sorry baughty dog. You failed bad on this one!
The last of us 2 is a dissapointing game in so many ways. It did NOTHING to me in terms of emotions or curiosity.. Its just a 25 hour long visually beautiful and really bad and repetitive sleeping pill of a "AAA title"

After being a fan of the first game, this instalment completely un-writes the events of the original, if the writers intention was to make the most boring hopeless and pointless sequel to a universally loved game then they succeeded, but I’m not stupid enough to be fooled into thinking that feeling bored is the whole point. The gameplay was okay or I rather say good but because of the story it got boring and very annoying , you know to play long games u need motivation and good story telling is a must but this game left bitter taste and uncomfortable feelings .
    I don’t recommend it .

Excellent game from start to end. Keep in mind this is a tale of vengeance and the theme is "hate" in stark contrast to the first games theme "love". Expect to be upset, but it truly is a great game.

The game play, incredible, visuals stunning, sound design amazing, combat one or the best, story....well thus where it all falls apart, ABBY is a psychopath who has 0 morals or regrets for killing, she's hate full and a monster, no amount of dady flash backs or dog pets could ever make me like her we have 10 hours to like her and understand her point of view, but she savagely beat one of the best cheracters in a game, she lost 1, 1 person before she killed joel her father.we spend 14 hours with joel and ellie and let me tell you they lost a lot more ,Nellie shows resource for her actions when she kills a pregnant girl , abby was about to kill dina who is also preggo and she had a smile on her face and said good right before almost slitting her throat, then she goes and kills members of her own team without blinking ppl she talks to and eats with everyday she's a monster and the icing on the cake is we have to hunt ellie beat her within an inch of her life break her arm and then we dont even get to kill abby at the end because violence begets violence BUT WE ALREADY KNOW THAT they ruined the story and If there's a 3rd i wont be playing THEY DID NOT EARN THIS NO ONE LIKES ABBY!! It's a masterpiece, best story driven game ever. You really feel the weight of all the characters decision's and can sympathize with all of them. The game shows you there's no heros or villains and the no one wins in the circle of revenge.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
