this game is like watching avengers endgame, but just imagine this..
thanos wiped-out 50% of all living creatures, and he murdered all the avengers in a very horrible way except for thor & thor was watching thanos when he killed all of his friends, so thor goes out for revenge kills everyone standing in his way & finally gets the chance to revenge, but changes his mind at the very last second for wtv reason..
    doesn't make any sense right?
they are trying so hard to justify what abby did and show you that she is not a bad person, so they force you to play as her to see her point of view to all of this.
imo.. making the vaccine should've been ellie's choice but since she was drugged, it was joel's choice, he is the one who traveled half of the country with her, who kept her alive & they bonded together, he was like a father to her.
it wasn't marlene's choice, and sure as hell it wasn't "Jerry" choice either so both of them can go die or wtv.
what he did was kinda justified because he was just protecting his "daughter" & when this doc tried to stop him, joel had no choice but to shoot him.
so joel is on the right side here not this stupid doc or his daughter.
other things that i didn't like is..
almost none of these new characters had a backstory which is just stupid lol *except for abby ofc haha"
i don't like how they won't lot you choose or do anything, you just keep playing until you reach this stupid ending, like if it was up to me to choose i'd have stayed at the farm & that's almost good ending to me..
i also don't like how they edited the storyline idk that for sure but "Official Story Trailer" looked different from the final game so yeah..
i also think that naughty dog is one of the best studios out there, but i don't think i'm going to trust them or buy any games from this studio anymore until they kick "neil druckmann" out & i'm pretty much done with pre-ordering games.

my rating to this game would be

    Graphics 8/10
    Locations 5/10
    Story 1/10
    Characters 3/10
    Gameplay 8/10

this game takes about 25 hours to beat, half of them are wasted because of "locked doors" and trying to find a way in, fighting infected, & trying to find materials, it can be really boring.

i just finished the game so i'm sorry for any grammar mistakes i'm still processing this stupid sad ending can't believe i've waited 4 years for this bs..

Graphics and gameplay are a 10/10, but story is a 0/10, so, this is pretty much a 4/10 game.
Why not a 6/10? well, the team behind this game said several times they didnt want to make a "fun" game, and that the main focus should be the story, well, if the studio considers the story so important, then it weights more than the graphics and gameplay.

The story is good, but only between hours 5 and 14. After that it's not that great and the ending is absolutely horrible. Good job sony. This game shouldn't have existed.

Storywise this game is completely terrible and spits on what made the last game great, Joel and Ellie. Considering that this is practically a (somewhat) interactive film as the gameplay is monotonous the story is the only thing that could save this game. Overall, extremely disappointing, I couldn't bring me to play after one of the character's deaths

I absolutely loved the story and what they did with it. I thought I knew what kind of ending I wanted for it but surprisingly I changed my mind by the time I got to the end and was pretty content with how they did end it.

It was such an emotional game, like the first, but it was also brutal and intense. I found myself loving some of the new characters introduced and was drawn in to their stories along with Ellie's. Every scene with Joel is a treasure and I can't say enough praise for Troy Baker's portrayal of him in this game. Same with Ashley Johnson as Ellie. And oh my gosh Laura Bailey as Abby. Props to her for owning that role.

The beginning is hard. But I didn't stop playing and I'm glad I kept going! A lot of people are angry with game and immediately want to trash it without giving it a chance. But I had so much fun playing it. I loved being in this world again and will definitely replay it at some point. Probably going to start the first one again for nostalgia.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay is a refined version of the original. Playing grounded is heavily recommended. The story is just horrendous with the pacing, lackluster of character development, unnatural dialogue, illogical plot, and felt rushed. They disrespected Joel and Ellie. The game made Joel seem like an incompetent survivor leading to his death, which his death didn’t make sense at all. Joel felt like a short lived cameo rather than a crucial side character to drive the plot forward, but rather the plot drags him. Ellie had no character development except being in a pissy mood the whole game. Ellie literally kills everyone and sacrifices everything to waste her opportunity to kill Abby. Just don’t get me started on how they kept shoving down the same theme of revenge repeatedly. The only good thing about this game is the soundtrack, gorgeous aesthetics and graphic fidelity, refined stealth mechanic, and the intense set pieces that fuels you with adrenaline. This is coming from a person that played the whole game with an open mind and on grounded difficulty. This game would be alright if it was a stand alone game not associated with TLOU. Expand

I’ve read some of the other reviews and I’m unsure how genuine they are with their’s because some people talk about agenda or they diss Neil Druckmann way too intensely.

So I’ll put this out there for anyone who comes across this. (I finished it a couple days ago and really got to sit and think it over before writing this)

The story itself was pretty disappointing particularly during the latter part of this game. There’s new characters/groups that all don’t get enough depth to them which I found unfortunate and wasn’t able to form attachment like I did to Henry and Sam, and any supposed “shock” moments already felt expected. The build-up of the story, for me, was beautiful until it fell flat during the latter half of the game where, at some points, the gameplay feels dry and you have to battle your own boredom to continue playing through the story. Of course, that’s not to say that Naughty Dog didn’t make this story look visually stunning the entire time. I think the art direction here really complimented the narrative scenes.

In general though, I think people who want, or are curious, to play this game should. The art, sound, and even the gameplay were the best parts of this game. I may not have enjoyed the story, but there’s plenty of encounters I find to have replayability value with the new weapons and new enemies. Story: 4/10
    Everything Else: 9/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm concerned by the reverse review bombing inflating this game with 10s and well as the normal review bombing giving it 0s, so I decided to create an account to give a fair review.

I'll sort the game into positives and negatives and give it a score based on that.

    Positives
Excellent graphics. It has indisputably some of the best graphics of the current generation,
Limited bugs. Yeah, this is a major positive to me, in an era where releasing a buggy mess and fixing it post launch is the norm.
Fun Gameplay. It might be generic, but it's also fairly fun and not broken.

    Negatives.

The story is poor at best.

The game takes odd stances. Ellie faces a small amount of bigotry, refuses food during a post apocalypse scenario where food would be difficult to get and the particular type of food would be near impossible. This, while it would appeal to people today is incredibly stupid post apocalypse.
Combine that with the fact that she can forgive the person who murdered her father figure and who had killed her friends throughout the game makes it feel like it's just for the player, in the way that old terrible games or shows would stop mid-moment to go "and this is bad" directly at the watcher.

The gameplay, while fun, is generic. I've included this on both positive and negative because it really is a bit of both depending on what you go into the game for.

Racism. This one is a bit of an odd one, to be sure. But it's also true. Abby's dad? The scientist killed in the first game? He was black. Then 2 came out and suddenly he's white.

And finally, and this is subjective, Neil Druckmann's self references that are throughout the game from the card to the favourable place in the starting credits and more, feels self-congratulatory instead of tongue in cheek.

Before the score, I'll elaborate on the story being poor.

It tries to convince people of the message that revenge is bad, but it does so incredibly poorly. The character who gets revenge gets all the traditional story framing for this character is good and even gets rewards for it.

The character who gives up on revenge goes through pretty much every over the top traditional way to say this character is irredeemably evil, kills a lot of people and then decides to give up on revenge at the very end. It's both out of character for the character they force you to build and causes the message to be mixed because instead of it all saying revenge is bad, the only way to remain a good person instead of a caricature of yourself is to move on?

It says revenge is bad except when it isn't.

Finally, onto the score. I'll start with 5 and then give and remove points based on the positives and negatives and what they mean to me.

    Good Graphics, +1 = 6.
    Limited Bugs. +2 = 8
    Fun Gameplay +2 =10.
Poor Story with mixed messages -4 = 6
    Odd Stances -1 =5
    Generic Gameplay -1 =4
    Racism -2 =2.
    Potential self-congratulatism -0 =2

If the last wasn't potential it's be -1 but it's subjective so -0.
With all this in mind, my score has to be 2.

However, the storyline was terrible you have to spend over 10 hours playing as Abby who killed joe just a few chapters before. They then delve into the characters backstory which is nice to see there motives but that could have been summerized in a cutscene. I play last of us 1 and loved the characters I expected Joel to die in this game as Ellie’s motivation to attack whoever did it. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I made an account here and I’m leaving my first ever review of a game. Ever. Simply because I want to see the score raised as it is lowered by entitled gamers who have rated it poorly due to the leaks - or have played a few hours up until the death scene. First I want to start by saying that Joel was one of my favorite video game characters ever, and seeing him brutally killed made me as angry as everyone else. It also made me absolutely despise Abby. I was livid when I realized half way through the game that she had her own separate campaign of 12+ hours. But by no means do I think that this game is “trash” because of it. First. In a realistic sense, it’s an apocalyptic world. People die. All the time. It is unrealistic to think that main characters who are beloved will live forever. Second. As much as I loved Joel, Abby had every reason to want revenge. He murdered multiple fireflies to get Ellie out. Not to mention killed Abby’s dad when he easily could have wounded him. THEN. On Ellie and Tommy’s revenge kick, they murder all of Abby’s other friends who are decent people. Abby left Ellie alive TWICE. Because she isn’t a horrible person, and just had the need to avenge her father. That is why Ellie chooses not to kill Abby at the end (though I wanted to see it happen). It’s because she willingly makes the choice to move on. She realizes she is the villain. Not Abby.

The game isn’t trying to push a political agenda. The game isn’t trying to make he viewers sympathize for Abby. The game is portraying a realistic visual of how actions have consequences. Joel made a decision to murder all the fireflies - this is what it cost him. Ellie made a decision to avenge Joel by murdering all of Abby’s friends - it cost her jesses life, her relationship with Dina, and more guilt. Her realization of this comes right before she kills Abby. She knows her death will only bring her more misery and guilt. So she willingly decides to forgive, same as she did with Joel in the flash back. It’s F’ing beautiful. That’s my rant. Big fan naughty dog. Forget the haters

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. What a massive disappointment this game turned out to be. The sequel to one of my all time favorite video games I wanted to see what the consequences of one of the most complex and well written characters Joel would be but this game fails to do anything that a PART 2 should.

    SPOILERS AHEAD

They kill one of my favorite characters within the first TWO HOURS in the most pathetic way and for a character I cared for so much about to get no emotion from me is shocking, absolutely shocking.

The games structure is poor and trying so hard to be artsy but instead it's fartsy. The flashbacks with Joel and Ellie (the best parts of the game) which should of been how the game started and made us a reason to care about the characters once again, but we get four 20 minute flashbacks in the game after Joel's death and this is suppose to make us feel anything? NO this storytelling sucks, make us care about the characters again, imagine if you hadn't played the original since the release you won't care that Joel dies, you won't even really care about the flashbacks which should of just been this entire game.

The new character Abby is trash as well because of the structure as well, when you kill our favorite character of the series and then expect us to care about this pathetic "secondary protagonist", no you failed at that, all the new characters in fact are awful, none get an interesting morally grey complex like in the original game. In fact I couldn't even tell you that much about the characters apart from Abby. Dina is pregnant and went to synagogue with her sister, that's it, really that's all you can do to create a character, a teenager could of written a better character. Most of these characters die and apparently everyone has short term memory loss and forget about these characters, wow great writing. If you want to do a revenge is bad story why don't you explore how it has mentally affected these protagonist, that would of been interesting, they give us a scene of this in the epilogue and that's it.

The ending is the worst ending maybe ever in AAA gaming history. This game could of been easily 1 or 2 points higher if we got the satisfaction of murdering the person who killed Joel but no. Ellie has legit drowned her in the most pathetic final battle ever but for some reason a flashback of Joel makes her stop. REALLY? that would make me make sure she's dead. Now we will get a spinoff or sequel with Abby which I'm sure the fans are really gonna want.

The gameplay is the same from the original, nothing wrong with that because I enjoyed the gameplay of the original but this has no innovation at all and no a prone, jump and dodge button doesn't make the gameplay "changed". I ran into many bugs, for example getting stuck in boxes, the camera locking in combat and characters being unresponsive to inputs, this game is not polished at all, this is the most since Fallout 76 of bugs I've ran into.

I found the Seattle downtown segment with Ellie exploring and finding cool things to be the most fun I had with the game, exploring was definitely welcome. But when you get to the pathetic second half with Abby the game feels rushed and exploring was very limited which was a massive letdown.

This game is easily the worst Sony game since the launch of the PS4 with the order 1886 and Knack. I have never been so disappointed and shocked with the direction of any media like this ever. I hope they do not continue the Last of Us series and make a new IP which I will not support as I have lost trust with Naughty Dog. Lets hope that Ghost of Tsushima is the exclusive to end the PS4 on a high note.

Façam como fizeram da Ellie depois do primeiro jogo ,Não precisa ser grande. 1 hora Já seria excelente, nem que seja somente cutscene. Expand

In an attempt to subvert expectations the story of the last of us 2 ends up losing its ability to be enjoyable, and its ending results in one of the most pointlessly frustrating moment's to date. Its gameplay is mediocre at best, numerous other titles have both a better story and better gameplay.

Unlikeable characters, almost filled to the brim with pandering, bad story telling, and smart characters being dumbasses for the sake of the plot alone. My biggest gripe about the game is this is Naughtydog. The same company that made the first game, and the entire Uncharted Series. Timeless classics. Proof that you KNOW they COULDVE and SHOULDVE done better here.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So much here is good. this is the best looking game on the PS4, probably ever. The use of difficulty settings, etc was done amazing, and the gaming industry needs to apply this to future games. It allows total customization on how you want to experience difficulty, rewards etc, and it's very well done.

The game makes a huge mistake when you have to play as "Abby", after killing the character you probably love the most as a fan of the series. At times I felt manipulated as a player having to perform forced actions that Abby makes, The "Scripted" action of killing the dog as Ellie, felt very forced, and then introduced a weak story around it. The story felt cheap, poorly written and forced. I was not invested in Abby's character whatsoever, although I will admit she has the best combat scenes in the game.

The ending was poorly written, and very gut wrenching, and did not make any sense at the end. Narratively speaking it was very bad.

I give it a 6/10 because graphically its beautiful, plays okay, but gets repetitive.

Pros: graphics are pretty excellent, the animations are very good, and voice acting is good.
Cons: gameplay is boring and feels unrefined. Story seems rushed and characters seem unrealistic to the point you really stop caring about them, which wouldn't be much of an issue but the story seems to be the only reason to really play this title.
Overall: probably a good buy for $20 or so but

There is review bombing and review brigading going on, so my advice is to ignore all scores of 0 and 10. This game is not a 0 and is far, far, far from a 10, I would give it about a 2.

For the bombers: Be honest with your scores please, the game deserves at least a point or two for the graphics, music and sounds.

The controls are from what I heard not up to par as they are basically the same as the first Last of Us, with minor improvements (like a jump function) so average at best.

The story on the other hand, oh man....where do I even start. In short it is a complete and utter train wreck. A dumpster fire of epic proportions, anyone who wrote this trash and/or signed off on it or had influence on it needs sacking...sorry but it is true. I won't go too much into the story so people who don't want to be spoiled aren't, but I will say calling it a disappointment is a huge understatement. You took choice out of the player's hands and forced them down the rails of the story YOU wanted to tell and the story is total excrement. The game could have possibly been salvaged if you allowed players choices in how the game unfolded, made it possible to have multiple different endings based on choices the players made. If you were not going to do this then you needed to make sure the story was something that everyone would like. Deaths of main characters need to have meaning, showing mercy to others needs to have a logical reason behind it, violence needs to have reasons for it other than just for the shock value. Characters must remain true to their personalities/intelligence established in the previous game. In short you messed up the story on every conceivable level, and you should be called on it!

For people leaving the 10/10 ratings, you are either not being intellectually honest or you have not played the first game. Don't give this game a 10 just because....no game is perfect and sorry but this one doesn't come close! Also, no, I am not a bigot, before you make that assumption...I loved the first Life is Strange in which the protagonist who was either bisexual or lesbian. That game had a good story and great music in which there was 2 possible endings. For me, even though graphics/controls wise it is very dated now, was an infinitely better experience to play than this game was to even watch being played.

I didn't always agree with ND's chosen narrative paths (one specifically angered me), but I continued to give the new direction a chance and im glad I did. The story this time around isn't focused on one side, but rather two. It's a game about how far people will go to make the hurt they have inside of them stop, and at what cost to their humanity. The game centers on topics like these and really nails home the violent acts you have to commit and the person you have to be to achieve your goals (to the point that I tried to avoid all the conflict I could). It's not a black and white story, but very complex with human nature at the forefront. The writing here is some of the best in the industry, followed by the stunning visuals, immersive gameplay and sound design. There is a sense of weight to every aspect really helping to build the world. The game is quite the controversy surrounding the LGBTQ and I honestly never had a problem with what little there is in it. Despite what people are saying, it's not about these topics, nor does it shove them down the players throat. These pre existing characters are supposed to be seen as vulnerable everyday people just trying to survive in a world that they don't fully understand. It never asks the player to take a stance, but rather asks the player to see them as they are, people trying to live. The real problem is people not being able to do this. This is a world that truly feels alive, along with the characters in it. Sometimes the decision that key characters make can be confusing, but it's a human story and people do questionable things. Like the story, humans are complicated. The ending is lacking some context and I wish they had summed it up better, but it left me with tears in my eyes and a sense of wonder. I can't wait to see where the series goes next, depending on if a sequel is warranted based on the hit it's currently taking from the gaming community. While I may not agree with it, I can understand why some people may not be happy with the directions taken here. They were very bold and certainly subverted expectations, a common thing in media nowadays, but unlike so many other, I felt it worked here. At the end of the day I'm happy with it and my final scoring is a 9.5/10. Expand

I would first like to say this game is stunningly beautiful the graphics are amazing the animations are cool kicking a guy down a set of stairs feels good since it doesn't take you out of the game with a cut-scene like some games do. The gameplay starts out fine but over the time starts to feel repetitive and boring with a huge amount of quick time events. Now to start with the story i didn't enjoy it but i didn't hate it. One part of the game forces you to kill a dog then tries to make you feel bad for a choice you didn't have a choice. If they changed alot of these events around. i feel like the pacing would feel better and you wouldn't hate the antagonist as much as you do. overall it's a average game would recommend getting it when it goes on a deep sale like 50% off. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The majority of the reviews written on here are by people who haven't even played the game, but just read spoilers. For those of you who are criticising the game for "characters or character development" are literally only doing so because ellie is gay and abby is a well built woman and your average players, usually men don't like the idea of that. As well as people moaning that ellie can now jump, swim etc. Did you expect her to remain a 14yr old girl who can't do any of that?
As for the story and plot, naughty dog released a statement literally telling you, you may not like it because we're not just writing a story of vengeance. We are making you feel different emotions and whether or not who is in the right, who's in the wrong etc. They've gotten some real backstory into it and they and are using everyday ideas to put into a game. They are trying to not only make it a game but to put real-life consequences into it and think is this right or wrong? It truly is a masterpiece written. As for the ending, i am not 100% the biggest fan because I feel it leaves you a bit lost. Your not sure where ellie goes from there l? Will she get her happy ending after all, what happens to abby does she go to the fireflies does she even make it off the island? But to be honest I think its honestly an amazing game! Just has occasional flaws as all games do! Theres so much more I could write about the dynamics or even play through etc. But I just don't think it deserves all these bad reviews.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very strange to see this game get review bombed so vehemently. There’s a clear lack of objectivity by tens of thousands of people leaving a review here, and clearly a fair few of those haven’t even touched the game.

Spectacular graphics, refined gameplay and an emotionally driven story that makes this yet another fantastic addition to Naughty Dogs now growing list of classics.

The two issues I have story-wise do relate to some of the decisions made. For me, what makes The Last of Us different from usual survival horror/apocalypse type games is that relationship between Joel and Ellie. The Last of Us IS that relationship more than the world itself and is at the very core of what makes the first game special. If you remove one of those elements then you risk falling back in to just another game, albeit a high level one.

The second issue is the trope of revenge. While naturally you would expect the people closest to Joel to want redemption, the game prides itself on being grounded and it would be hard to accept that in real life, in such a horrendous world, you would leave the sanctity of Jackson to travel hundreds of miles in to an absolute fortress to try and find one person. It’s not a dealbreaker but it does take away from that grounded atmosphere it tries to create.

That being said, I’m more than happy to be an observer of Druckmann’s story, given that he is the creator, much like I would he reading any novel. I admire the fact that they didn’t rest on their laurels and pay loads of fan service to the game, purely to please the (seemingly aggressive) dedicated fan base to this franchise. I want to play a linear story game to be told a story, not to cross off a checklist of things I wanted to see in the game. Generation defining game, not quite at the level of the first game, but the expectations for this sequel were so high that was always going to be a challenge.

It’s a shame that there is an ever present immature streak among a lot of gamers that can’t be objective enough to form an opinion on this game without jumping on a bandwagon.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I would like to preface this by saying, I made this account specifically for the purpose of writing this review. I am not going to just leave the score I am going to provide genuine criticism. Overall review at the very bottom. Now, let's get into it.

The Last of Us Part 2 as a standalone game wouldn't be bad. It would be okay at best. Kinda generic story, decent combat, and excellent visuals. However, since this is the sequel to The Last of Us, one of my favorite games of all time and one of the best games ever made, we must look at this game in a different light. In my opinion, this game has the foundation to be fantastic, but falls short in it's writing. Visuals are superb, combat is as good as the original, and the characters have a good base layer of depth. However, it goes no deeper than that, and we'll pick it apart, one by one.

Jesse. I'm starting with him first cuz well, there's not much to say. All we really know about him is he used to date Dina and hung out with Ellie a lot. Aside from that, I couldn't say, he's a cool guy just, there's no depth.

Dina. I actually really liked Dina. She was a cool character and I wanted to know more about her, however, we don't get much outside of "She's Ellie's girlfriend" which is fine, but, now we're only caring about her because we care about Ellie. I wanted to know Dina *more*, show us some flashbacks of them building that relationship higher and higher to get to where it's at. Then, I would've been much more emotionally invested in her.

Abby. I liked Abby as the villain, I did. However, I did not like how Naughty Dog tried to make us sympathize with her. Joel and Ellie in our eyes, are the good guys. And with Abby killing Joel, there is just no way I can ever like her like I like them. The entire time playing as her I hated it. Ya we got backstory and I appreciate it, but it could've been told differently instead of making us play as her, and forcing us to beat the s**t out of characters we love.

Joel and Tommy. Now I am grouping these two together because I have the same issue with both of them. You cannot convince me logically, that Tommy and Joel, would have trusted Abby like they did. It just wouldn't happen. Joel and Tommy from the original game didn't trust a damn soul besides themselves and their families. So for Tommy and Joel to put themselves in that situation, makes no sense. Even to go as far as giving out their full names? No way. That's not the Joel and Tommy I know.

Finally, Ellie. Ooooh, this one hurts. Ellie is such a bold departure from her original character. To tell me that Ellie is going to watch Abby kill her two father figures, her girlfriend, and one of her friend, then let her live? Ya no. Sorry, that is just completely unrealistic to me. No human would ever go through that much stress and trauma, just to give up right at the end. Just doesn't happen.

What could have made it better? In my opinion, this: start the game with a little prologue showing Ellie and Joel younger, not first game young but, a little older than that. Show their relationship or lack their of, show us a little bit more of Ellie's emotion after finding out what Joel did to the Fireflies, and introduce us to her relationship with Dina and Jesse to show how they've been growing together. Then, around the mid game mark, thrown in Abby, looking for Joel to seek her revenge. While out on patrol with Dina, Ellie gets captured by Abby and is tortured trying to get info on Jackson and whether or not Joel is there. Then, let us play as Joel a bit on his way to rescue her, and in his attempt, he get shot and killed in front of Ellie, trying to save her.

Then, the game moves on to Ellie's revenge plot. And this time she *actually* gets revenge. During this time either cut out all of Abby's part of the game or atleast shorten it, or show us things in cutscenes. Then to wrap it all up, Ellie kills Abby, and takes revenge for Joel. I get the message of the game is "revenge is bad" but that could've been shown in like an epilogue scene, where Ellie has PTSD or something along those lines, and she is haunted by the horrible things she did, instead of killing off all the major characters we liked.

Overall I give the game a 5 cuz if you're only playing it for the gameplay, you'll have a good time, but the story just isn't there, even if you didn't play the first game, some actions just make you go like, wait, what?

People hate on this game because of Joel’s death I refuse to believe otherwise. Most people that hate the game only hate it because of the leaked video and hasn’t played the game at all but think they have the right to judge this game. The people who has played it and still hated it my only thing to that is to say pay attention because out of all the hate I bet they didn’t notice how Tommy is honestly the reason Joel died. All in all this game was amazing Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that's hard to hate but difficult to love.

The Last of Us Part II is a phenomenal game, there is no doubt about, but yet it still manages to be somewhat disappointing. Mechanically speaking, the game has no faults. As much as the director would claim to the contrary, the game is exactly what it sets out not to be: fun. In fact it's probably one of the most "fun" games I've played in a long time. Uncharted 4 was a game made fun via the ability to just throw up a hook and swing around, jumping and taking down enemies from above and running-and-gunning your way to the next goal. The Last of Us Part II is made fun via dodging enemy attacks, crawling under an abandoned truck and enjoying the sweet thrill of a well-placed silenced bullet in the head of an unsuspecting enemy.

The majority of my disillusion occurs within some minor technicalities with the games structure and narrative decisions. During the first day in Seattle, Ellie and Dina come across 2-3 large open areas. The first area, if you're working at trying to explore everything, can take as long as 2 hours. The next area is more about combat but features 6 or 7 large groups of around 6 enemies each within close proximity in a downtown area, which again, can take many hours to get through if you're attempting to go about it stealthy. The issue is that in being tasked to find gas, after a few hours you almost completely forget why you even needed gas in the first place. And the issue is that areas like these never really show up again. The areas certainly never reach this scope again but really I think these areas are the games weakest and never needed to be more open in the first place.

This leads into the game's biggest issue: Abby. Naughty Dog is perhaps notorious for designing massive set pieces and building a story around them. In this game though, it appears that situation has reversed and surely that should be a good thing, but I don't think it works here. The game suffers from lack of excitement and any set pieces that do feature tend to be given to Abby. It would appear that a game marketed as Ellie's game fails to give her an interesting story in comparison to Abby and a lot of it is forgettable. Ellie gets some amazing flashbacks with Joel that are the highlights of the game, but Abby has an amazing present in the game. Ellie is more likeable but Abby has more story.

When the 2016 reveal trailer was released, I was 17 finishing my final year at school and I spent almost every day in the library with Shawn James' "Through the Valley" on repeat. When Troy Baker said that the game would be divisive, I thought that it would be Joel's death that would make it so. I was wrong. It was simply the execution of the second half of the game. Playing the enemy is a concept that could work, and one that is certainly a great idea, but its not so well executed. There are moments where we feel for Abby, we laugh with her and understand her hardships but ultimately when it comes to it, no matter how humanised Abby is or demonised Ellie is, we are hot wired to side with Ellie no matter what. It is difficult at times to understand character motivations Despite what other reviews say about the supporting characters and how bland they are, they are honestly amazing characters that carry the game more than the two ladies at its helm, especially Dina.

Perhaps the game would have worked better if it wasn't sliced in half, if the main conflict took place inside the 3 days it focuses on instead of the final conflict being a year later turning Ellie into a Clementine copycat complete with missing fingers, mom haircut and child. It would have been more fun for Ellie to visit the burning Seraphite island or fight "The Rat King", but again these are given to Abby. When we get to that final showdown, despite all the time we spent with Abby, the journey there with Ellie warrants the satisfaction of Abby's death. Instead of killing her when she had the chance, our hero decides she wants some epic showdown for some reason to fuel her ego in which really she lost in the end (goodbye fingers), only to allow Abby to sail away into the sunset.
Is the story awful? No. Is it unsatisfying? Mostly. Is it realistic? I'm unsure. Is it worth experiencing anyway? Absolutely.
This may have come across as a negative review but I don't intend it to be really, as a videogame it is a phenomenal game that actually is FUN. I really wanted to love it but I couldn't help but be disheartened by the second half. And the second half could have been justified by a better ending. Why did I give it a 9/10? Because it's not awful. It deserves the praise its got. How videogames are reviewed is typically a 7 is 'average'. I do believe it's above average in design, gameplay and accessibility so, 9. The ending is what knocks it down and that Ellie literally just became Clementine 2.0. Also maybe more cutscenes.

Terrible story line that abruptly ends. Just as long as the first game in my experience and it shoves SJW crap down your throat. I wanted to give this game a fair shake, but please don’t waste your money like I did.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall The Last Of Us Part II is very good game. I am disappointed with how ND killed off Joel, I don’t believe he or Tommy would have gone to a location with a bunch of unknown people... But that is what it is... with the years passing by Joel could have become easily trusting and quite honestly careless.....

ND did a very good job overall with the firearms use-age and manipulations. However, currently the revolver is messed up.. when the trigger should be in double action it’s to the rear as if it’s a dead trigger or in single action... (imo with the wheelgun Ellie never should cock the hammer back on the revolver unless she’s making a 25 yard or so shot) Its unrealistic for her to always be cocking the hammer back if aiming down sights in a close quarters situation. Another complaint is weapon options.. In my opinion there should be more options as far as firearms in the game (handguns -1911 or browning Hi-power) or with rifles the Ruger Mini 14. It’s ridiculous that these weapons are in the game and you don’t have access to use them.

Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
