This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Definitely agree with a lot of the negative reviews out there. Some points I'd like to make :

Pros: Technically it's a masterpiece. Sound, graphics are all amazing. What you'd expect from naughty dog.

    Cons :
    - They kill off a beloved character from the first game
    - People who like this game now think that main character who was killed is now a monster and evil, even though they built a good relationship with them and loved them in the first game. Like WTF?! - It seems whoever dislikes the game is now getting critisised by SJWs
    - It's manipulative
    - The game is heavily political and panders to stereotypes
    - The game is totally depressing

I've now stopped playing the game. Its not fun and is really down. I played Persona 5 afterwards and it made me laugh within 5 minutes, which is what I want from a game. Stay away from tlou2, I wish I did and I wish I hadn't had spent my money on this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let me start with the easy stuff... the Graphics. Literally I can't expect the PS4, a console from the old-world to able to handle such beautiful graphics. I played the game in a PS4 Pro and the game run smoothly. The grass, the sea and oh my god the facial expressions. I am not an expert on sound/music/soundfx so I won't vote for that... although A-ha's Take on Me was a beautiful addition to the game. Now the story... nah not yet let's talk about the GAMEPLAY. I see people complain about the AI... well I don't agree. Movements are unpredictable and if you play in stealth all the time you can actual feel the thrill and the horror while you pass enemies undetected. Alternatively, you can try your luck with your one pistol bullet and your two arrows. Enemies will attack you from the most unexpected angles, if someone is shooting at you from a close distance you won't be able to reach him, and the big guys require two headshots (??) oops... not very realistic but let's play the ‘it’s just a game’ card. Now the let’s discuss the story. I believe most people don't have Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005). The good guy, father figure Joel dies... well let’s face it he was a piece of sh1t for some others, doomed humanity and he was a killer. He was a survivor and naughty dog had the guts to remove his plot armour because sometimes you can't be too careful and sometimes you die. He did his worst, he tried his best, now it's time for him to rest. Whoever is reading this review I would like you to know that I loved the Joel character and if I was him I would probably followed the same road of decisions... doesn't mean I/he was right. But let's don't talk about Joel anymore as he is not the main character. Ellie - is this the little girl from the first last of us? Not really. Ellie doesn't want to be left alone, Ellie cares for her friends. When I was five, I liked carrots, today I f hate them. People change and as the French say revenge is a dish best served cold. It's a meaningless path that consumes the little left of humanity left in you. Abbie did the same thing when all her friends were killed - the reason they died wasn't because of Ellie it was for Abbie's need of revenge and damn, it costed. Both characters did terrible things, in the end, they’ve decided that revenge was meaningless… and it was too late. They lost everything. How can you hate a story like that? The simple answer is that you wanted a happy ending, ending with closure and a righteous main character that never makes mistakes. I can accept that but don’t call the story terrible. Say something like ‘Not quite my tempo’ – Whiplash (2014) Expand

i would say ND really did incredible job for Part 2. The story very dark and i love how the storytelling twists the audience's feeling. The narration of the story really psychologically tortured to the main characters. i feel both ellie and abby's pain and glad how the game ended. gameplay, grafic and sound are one of the best i ever experienced so far. well done!!

The parallels in this game and the attention to detail in this story are absolutely amazing! People have such closed minds and wanted it to be exactly like the first. After finishing the game, here is my take on it: I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped. After finishing the game, here is my take on it: I did not enjoy it as much as I had hoped. The story line was kind of weak, in my eyes, and not executed in a way that allowed me to feel any emotional investment or payoff. The story can be described as "realistic" I suppose, but there were so many contradictory moments; were the writers that lazy, or were they really trying to pass a C+ movie off as a game?

Story line aside, the fighting mechanics were fun albeit repetitive and a little silly at times. Dodging and having a prone position were beneficial additions to the game, and yet players still crafted the basic items from the first game (molotov, shiv, med kit, bomb) with the same play style. The upgrades and skill trees were pretty pointless in the end, which was frustrating because we spent so much time gathering those resources only to find out that you may not even need to fight at all (running to the next cutscene). It would be nice if there wasn't always a "whew, I think that's it" dialogue prompt to state that you killed all the enemies in the area. That felt a little campy for a game that was trying to have a story line that was as realistic as possible. Lastly, the game did feel about 5 hours too long. The more time dragged on, the less attention we put into reading notes and enjoying the environment, because the story line became the linear spine of the game.

The music was well enjoyed through the levels, and the graphics were beautiful, which I'm sure most people agree with, so there isn't much more to say on that. All politics aside, and just taking the game for face value, it was okay, but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first and I wouldn't enjoy replaying it. Also, I hope multiplayer comes out, because that was my favorite aspect of the first.

It's not good, really, everything about the story telling of this game feels wrong, it's like they hired some random to make a plot for a budget movie instead of a AAA game. It's disappointing, full of unrealistic drama, plot holes and overall political nonsense that simply had no place in the game. I would be inclined to give the game a solid 6, but just like the first game, TLoU II relies a LOT on the story to work, it's basically a interactive movie with some gameplay elements, so with such a bad thought plot like that, it just doesn't deserve much more. This game looks....okay? The scenery looks good, but the characters models look kinda derpy. You can especially see it when you look at Ellie's eyes look really derpy compared to the first game. The combat system is fine. I don't really have any complaints about it, it can be a bit clunky at certain moments though.
The story...oh no the story. I can't even begin to explain how ABYSMAL & DISASTROUS the story is without spoiling it, yes it's that bad, trust me! All I can say that stuff happens for no reason, Ellie & Joel's personalities are completely swapped & the lessons they've learned/character developments in the first game are completely thrown out the window (you'll see why when you play it), & the ending was just...I can't explain in any other words other than bad, It's just bad. The story is the true reason why my rating is a 0.

In conclusion, I cannot recommend this game to fans who played the first game nor to anyone that likes good storytelling. It's not worth $60, please don't waste your money on this. Get Cyberpunk 2077 instead!

I've never felt this way about a game before, I made a metacritic account just to share my thoughts.

The gameplay didn't change enough to feel significantly different, I understand that it's hard to innovate nowadays, but some elements feel unpolished to a level of being inexcusable. The rope mechanics are a nice addition, but it's literally the only thing that grabbed my attention,
in an industry where half life: alyx exists, this feels like a weak attempt to tell a story that a small isolated group thought would be "deep".
Sorry for bringing up half-life again, but this feels like if valve would have stopped innovating on their gameplay ideas for half life 2 in 2001-2002 and would have went on until 2004 polishing that game, bringing the unnecessarily dark atmosphere and lack of innovation from years before it actually got released.

I won't spoil anything for this game, but I have to say, having too dark of a story does exist, and this game demonstrates this very well. All the people who think that this adds deepness to the story simply overlook the flaws, then shout at anyone who points them out. If the story wasn't just a miserable boring mess, the game could be a 7 or even an 8 in my eyes.

I played and finished TLOS so many times more than i can remember , the only thing i have remember is that i played all the difficulty
mode from normal to grounded on the ps3 , plus the ps4 experience finished 2 times

so you can tell how much i loved TLOS , i didn't get bored to play the story all over again and live the experience so many times.

so I preord part2 to see Joel and Ellie once again and their story

Finished part 2 in 7 days (3 hours or close of play in 1 day)

...what a disappointement ! i never thought Neil will make the story here this worse i still don't believe it

what Joel did was right , why you have to punish him for what he did ! that's unacceptable

also Ellie personality has changed here she was a piece of **** towards Joel

i didn't like the new character and her revenge crew ,
who came up with this idea of killing joel and i have to play as joel killer to understand why she did it !! one thousand NO

The sequel was bad very bad , it will hurt your soul

all you have to do here now is to suffer and cry the rest of the game ,

also Ellie is your enemy as Joel killer ! you have to beat her down! that's nice very nice :(

in the end joel killer survived and Ellie didn't get her revenge after killing the whole world to get to Joel killer !

    what a garbage sequel

anyway I'm giving this game a 4 because here its all about the story

everything else was fantastic or at least acceptable

and i don't care about Naughty dog anymore from now on.

It's an action game, frantic or stealth, both fully immersive in a rich story.

It's a game for you to live one avatar, not one... several! See the world and feel it through each one...

The unfolding of history sometimes forces us to do things we don't want to.
I literally let go of the controller and wanted to stop playing the last battle. It was a mixture of sadness, disappointment, swallowing tears, but the curiosity to know what awaited those beings that I loved so much, made me continue. My girlfriend cried horrors! Feelings I've never experienced so strongly in a game, but sometimes in movies.

That inability to control the personalities of the characters we love. How many times do we curse them... apart from so many others that we are heartbroken with sadness. Rare are the moments of joy and warmth... This is the world we experience here. What a mix of sensations. Great!

The cruelty of the world of TLOU can only be assimilated by those who allow it to be felt through the characters. That's right, undress your beliefs, they didn't guide you here.

I saw so many negative reviews, criticizing the developers' decision to force the player to see both sides of the coin... "Dude!" - As Ellie would say - "**** up all of them".
They didn't realize the wit of the script. In the second part of the game, literally, you have to collect coins. And we can't rotate them, we only see one side! Hello?? Didn't get the reference?
It's not about loving or hating a character.

This game is not about you!
An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, and we're all going to the grave.
The epic ending to a story as traumatic as life itself.

Thanks to the creators! I can't wait for the HBO series!

The game has the best graphics of 2020 however the game is story driven and the story was lackluster and undeveloped with Joel and Ellie acting out of character. The character arcs and development have been completely forgotten. The game’s ending is a cliche “ending the cycle of revenge” however it is not done well. Do watch angry joe, jacksepticeye and others reviews of the game and decide for yourself. It is also very clear an agenda is being pushed with the game, this becomes the main charactaristic of the characters such as lev and undermines the potential those characters could have had, I believe that they should not have pushed an agenda in the game especially the one they did push down our throats and rather focused on making memorable characters. Naughty Dog, you Practically destroyed all the male characters, and not because they’re male, but because we’ve, as a community, have come to know and love these people; Cough cough- JOEL AND TOMMY oh and Glen from TWD. And then we get to see Abby, whose ridiculously huge, and I say this is ridiculous not because there’s anything wrong with a buff woman, but because IN THE MIDDLE OF AN APOCALYPSE YOU HAVE A WOMAN WHOSE BUILT LIKE A TRAIN. Doesn’t make sense. How is she this huge? What, does she have a stash of steroids or something? Kinda silly if you think about it. It’s just forced. The whole girl power thing is just forced and people hate it..because it cost our beloved characters to get the boot. Idc what agenda you put in a game as long as it works and your not shoving it down my throat. In reality nobody cares. People play games to escape reality. And look....all great heroes have an end, I don’t mind Joel dying, it’s the way you killed him you fool. Neil, man...you told us back in 2016 that the main focus of this game was JOEL AND ELLIE. You lied and decided to bring She-Hulk into the mix. And then you’re gonna try to play with our emotions, trying to make us feel sorry for this chick after what she did, and what she continues to do throughout the story. I’m sorry but a lot of us don’t have enough empathy for her, even after we find out the plot twist. That’s just my story review. However is the story-telling bad? No. It’s not a bad story. It works. But for a hardcore Last of Us fan, it’s not gonna pass. You literally took away the heart and soul of the game. For a newcomer however, they’d most likely like the game. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly... I just finished the game and it was probably the darkest game I've ever played in my life. Naughty dog, I give props to you for making me actually hate a fictional character, I honestly didn't think it possible. Your attempts at humanizing Abby throughout your time playing as her were strong but to no avail. I hated Abby the entire game and wanted her to die for what she did to Joel right up until I was drowning her... thats the only time I felt pitty for her. As for Ellie's development, I hate how dirty you did her. Ellie was nothing but a fun loving teen filled with humor and spunk. I understand how Joels discision to save her life could have dampened that but by the end of this game it was as if she was devoid of life. There was no hope in this game the moment Joel was killed except for killing Abby and by the end we couldn't even do that. Over all the game did a fine job at getting you enotionally invested, but none of it and I mean none of it was a feel good emotion for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, TLOU2 is a flawed game, with some questionable decisions in story telling, pacing and direction. However, it is worth playing, and from a pure technical and gameplay perspective, quite stunning.

I'll start first on the technical side of things, which is where this game truly shines. In this respect, TLOU2 is a masterpiece. Graphically, the game is gorgeous, one of the best looking PS4 games to date, and certainly a stunning way to cap of the PS4's end of life. The environments are richly detailed, from Jackson's winter snow covered climate, Seattle's rain soaked depressing atmosphere and Santa Barbara's hot, dry heat. The PS4 Pro was able to render them all with great clarity and stunning lighting at 1440p. As a PC gamer predominantly, the 30fps was annoying, as was the controller, however, I think these annoyances can be overlooked - although I would love the series to come to PC one day.

While it suffered in some areas from drops under 30fps (mostly interactive water environs), for the most part it was completely playable. The Temporal Anti-Aliasing, nice film grain, filmic colour grading and beautiful lighting (using pre-baked and indirect lighting effects), especially the global illumination lighting effects, simulating colour bleeding from light on different materials (which was impressively implemented) brought the game and the richly cluttered and living environments to life. The environments ranged from quite large open areas like the large Seattle map, to more guided closed areas in the later game. I don't think an open world design would have been of benefit for this title, and was best served with map design seen in game.

The story however is quite clearly an area which has received some very critical reception, and rightly so. While I didn't hate the story, in fact I enjoyed some parts of it, I didn't like it either. It is for the most part a story of revenge, and very little else, there is nothing original here. There are moments of redemption and clarity of thought for the characters, but in the end, it was an eye for an eye revenge adventure plot that did not succeed, leaving the player empty, angry and wondering what was it all for. Maybe that was the point of the story? If so, it's not appreciated. The game is undeniably bleak and hard to enjoy in many parts, which is a shame, given that TLOU1 was such a fantastic game with a brilliant story. Forcing the player to play from the viewpoint of the "antagonist" for essentially the entire last half of the game was clearly an attempt to try and show to the player how perceptions and points of view are never truly what they seem, nor a persons intentions - for Abby it was about justice, for Ellie it was about vengeance.

There were some really great parts to the story, the best being the flashbacks to Joel and Ellie's moments in the past, both good and bad and their journey from close bond, shattered relationship and eventual renewal - although this never came to pass given the story events. These good moments were few and far between though. When we get to know Abby, she is not quite the evil murderer that she is initially portrayed to be, and much like Ellie, a product of her surroundings and history, that fact is established at the start. This does not absolve her of her actions though - Abby's justice was directed solely at Joel, while Ellie's revenge was directed at everything to do with the WLF, purely by association with Abby. In the end, Ellie evolved into a worse person than Abby, destroying her character. Abby's initial introduction into the game with her hate filled and violent introduction as she beats Joel to death for the murder of her father did not lend her to being an easy character to either play as or to empathize with. There is much more to say, but not really enough space. To sum it up, the story is flawed, imperfect and hard to digest, but ultimately, still worth experiencing.

The gameplay is much like any other Naughty Dog title with survival elements, scrounging for supplies etc. It's fun, and a refinement on previous titles. While it's nothing groundbreaking, it does the job well. However, some elements like restrictions on ammunition amount make little sense. As a PC gamer, the camera felt overly claustrophobic, which is something that console titles have always had an issue with. But apart from small issues like those, it was still fun from a gameplay perspective.

Over all, I'd rate TLOU2 a 5 out of 10. This game is by no means perfect like most of the mainstream gaming media portray. It's most glaring issues are those involving story and the essential destruction (deconstruction?) of those characters we came to love in the original game. That is not easily overlooked. However from a clear technical point of view, the game is stunning, richly rendered and always looks beautiful. EDIT: Changed from 7 to 5, in light of actions by Sony and ND and their doubling down on stupid.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2 is a mess of a game. The gameplay itself is extremely dated and doesn't build upon the first games mechanics, making them feel stagnant in comparison. The story however, is worse. I dont hold any grudges to the game's developers or writers, but the story is just horrendous. First off they killed off a fan favourite character in a very unceremonious way, almost abandoning what his character was built on. Second they force you to play as a new character who's only "connection" to the story is killing joel. The whole motivation of ellie's development was revenge on abby for removing her father figure, the same way joel removed her own father. But the whole game is a bait and switch. Nothing comes out of the story other than the death of a beloved character, the mutilation of the character we protected throughout the first game and nothing else. It was all for nothing, no pay off, no satisfaction of killing a character who essentially tormented ellie, all for nothing. I hated this game, I hated playing it, the seraphites hardly show up, despite the trailers implying that they had a large role to play. And the infected take a back seat.
I wasnt expecting joel to survive to the end of the game. But they proved how little they cared about the characters and the fans with this atrociously written, virtue signalling game. All in all?
    I hated it.

I didn't want Joel to die but if you make that happen, you should not put it at the start of the game. The pacing is poor and the story isn't necessary. Abby's story is actually okay, but it drags out forever and you should've had to play it before you know she kills Joel because the entire time you just want her to die. Nobody in this story is in the right, but you root for Ellie and Joel because of the first game. Parts of it felt very unnecessary. I couldn't form a real opinion on Jesse and Dina, because you barely get to know anything about their characters. As for the ending: this really made me disappointed. I think the game saves some grace with me if it ends with Ellie and Dina and the baby, and mix in a flashback like the one the game finished with. Instead, she leaves the life and family she has and goes off to kill Abby and when Ellie gets there, she doesn't even kill Abby. One thing that bothers me about games is when they lose the player with the timeline. I like flashbacks, but I was left with many questions. How long was Joel and Ellie in Jackson before Seattle? How did Ellie and Dina find a way to survive after Seattle? Did they go directly back to Jackson presumably? How long did they stay there? How long were they living in the house at the end of the game? How long was Ellie gone? What happened to Dina and the baby? I wish the game has a DLC (it probably wont) to maybe fix some of the plot holes, but I doubt it. I would really prefer if they didn't make a third game to try and correct it, but they probably will. They should leave it as it is- A fantastic first game, and a very, very disappointing sequel. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Story: While this game's story doesn't live up to the original, a feat that honestly isn't possible, it still is extremely strong. The main issue being that we are given too many character arcs to be able to empathize with all at once. By the end of the characters' journeys, and witnessing the destruction they have cause I was left feeling empty, but not in a bad way. I do not understand the negative reviews one bit, the characters people dislike are actually the strong point of the game and are morally superior to the characters from the original. There is one horrible love triangle and adult scene that shouldn't have been included and felt entirely like a trope.

Gameplay: Once I got the hang of the aggressive stealth combat, I felt this game was top tier. It's a giant step up from the previous game and many other AAA stealth games I've played. The pacing is a bit off due to all the scavenging and there are a few too many encounters that don't service the story, but I'd still give it a 9 or 10/10

    Graphics/Musical Score: 10/10 enough said.

I would have preferred it if they made Ellie's goal to go out and find a cure for Joel after he was infected from spores, hunting down some scientist in Washington, mirroring what Joel did for Ellie in the first game, with Ellie more than willing to sacrifice her life for Joel, leading to the same discoveries that we get in flashbacks here.

This way, you could keep ALL the characters you've created and you have a goal for the player to be invested in.

Instead, we get none of that aspect again, in fact, it isn't even really an issue, except when Ellie's mask breaks, which only exists to cause drama with Dina. TLOU2 is all about revenge with half of the game following someone we will never care about because of what she did.

I'm sure many do legitimately love it but I cannot and I DID try to give it a fair shake.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At first I was tempted to give TLOU part 2 a nine. But the themes and ambitious writing have forced me to contemplate and come to grips with the story it told. It is not a feel good story, but a story that is dark and harrowing, much like the world of the Last of Us. There are some parts of the story that do seem rushed or poorly put together however that does not take away from the experience as a whole. Playing as Abby forces the player to see the other side, which is something that is not often done in media. Too often we are presented a story with clearly established heroes and villains, completely ignoring the real world where everything is a shade of gray. No one person is all good, just as no one person is all bad. The gameplay is brutal and horrific, which is perfect for the game and can even be very challenging on higher difficulties. Playing 10 hours as a character no one likes is so exhausting. The game is far too long.

After finishing the game I feel sad over two things:
    1. There's no multiplayer mode, making the game lean on it's single player story as the only reason to buy the game.
    2. To explain what's wrong with the story without summing up the story or revealing the story: The Last of Us 1 (TLoU) gave a feeling that the story was complete and that you've witnessed something epic story-wise. There

    2. To explain what's wrong with the story without summing up the story or revealing the story: The Last of Us 1 (TLoU) gave a feeling that the story was complete and that you've witnessed something epic story-wise. There was a hunger for a follow-up in the story, but it was still complete.
In TLoU2 the story leave you with a feeling that you just watched a pilot episode of a cancelled TV-series. So empty and I would not recommend anyone to play this game if you have a positive memory of TLoU 1.

About the content in the story, I have not a problem of the characters choises in life. I just feel that the characters does things for the wrong reason and it's just a big failure.. I can't see what plans the developers had for the story.

Perhaps there can be DLC's that enhance the story and explains one or two things. But that wont correct the wrongs that were made. I feel empty after playing this game.

The team that worked on that, did an amazing job. The problem that made me really dislike the game is the story writing. The whole playing process, I had a feeling that the game force me to do things that I don't want to do. For example at the end when Elly wants to kill Abby but then she remembered Joel and decided to let Abby go. I really wanted that the game gave us choice to kill Abby or let her live. For me that is just so weird, that Elly left Dina and killed so many people to take revenge and at the end she just forgives her.
Characters motivation was also so bad written, Abby searched Joel for 5 years. I dont think that she will be still that mad after 5 years. The whole Abby character is just far-fetched. She wants to take revenge for her unnamed father, that didn't even played a big role in the whole game. Like they had 7 years to think of the story and the story writers came with this.
I can't say it's the worst game that I have ever played, but as a fan that waited so long for the sequel, its really disappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Masterpiece, brave and thankfully exist even fighting agains the intolerance of a lot of people. The other gaming companies should stay as one on the freedom to tell different stories.

This is a worthy continuation of the first part. And I don’t understand why people don’t like her so much.

Amazing graphics, sound track and gameplay... but all this without a good story is nothing. There are a lot of plot holes, and seems to be different characters since first part (talking about personality), and the end it's completely empty, without some message, direction or anything, just empty, a terrible crusade for revenge, to end in nothing.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
