For anyone who was a fan of the first game and is interested in seeing what becomes of Joel and Ellie in this post-apocalyptic game after the haunting finish from when we last saw them, you must play this game. When i finished with Ellie in Seattle, having to play with Abby just bothered me, but throughout the game, the way of make her feel like a real person really entered me. If the game makes me love the "antagonist" i think that has to be called god tier writing somehow.. Really true masterpiece, you all must play this game.… Expand

    Loved it. It's an epic story about the futility of revenge, and it works. Pacing is maybe a little off at times, with some sections dragging on a bit too long, but that's about my only (minor) complaint. Graphics, sound, story and gameplay are all top notch and an improvement on the 1st TLOU in every department.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is better than the first one. Joel was a bad person, Ellie is a bad person, and (shockingly) Abby is a bad person. You can try to convince yourself that "That's just the world they live in, they do these things to survive", but you're just deluding yourself. When you look at both the original and Part II as one story, you carry out horrific acts in the name of your own self interest, with Joel probably being the worst of the three. This game isn't about Joel, but given the community response, you'd swear that you spend more than 90 seconds playing as him.
    Naughty Dog have given the player a chance to look at the idea of actions and consequences. You pulled a trigger in 2013, and the effect of that has finally come to fruition, but not as you would have liked. Just like Joel massacring a hospital full of people, Ellie's actions in Seattle had consequences, offered from the perspective that we as players rarely ever think about. The first couple of hours playing as Abby were frustrating, but the moment that sealed her story as it's own troubled journey was when you decide to go back for Yara and Lev. She wasn't acting out of the goodness of her heart, but trying to prove to herself that she was a good person, it was a self-serving act. Just like Joel "saving" Ellie, just like Ellie's acts of vengeance. By the end of this game, I wanted either both Ellie and Abby to live or both to die, because the pitiable state that their respective journeys leave them in doesn't make you feel like the hero you want to be at the end of a 30 hour game. You should feel the weight of your actions.
    Just to comment, I liked Joel, with every second of screen time in this game, he was allowed to grow, which is why he had to die. No matter how much you grow, the sins of the past have a way of catching up to you, it's just fortunate that he had enough of an impact on Ellie to keep her from following the same path that he took.    … Expand

    Have played the first game multiple times, heading into the second game I expected the same kind of gameplay and emotions. However I was surprised by the sudden change in story with the death of Joel, and I wanted to hunt and kill Abby, however then seeing abbys back story I was split in emotion. Further on, looking after Lev as Abby I wanted to see Abby and lev live on and find theHave played the first game multiple times, heading into the second game I expected the same kind of gameplay and emotions. However I was surprised by the sudden change in story with the death of Joel, and I wanted to hunt and kill Abby, however then seeing abbys back story I was split in emotion. Further on, looking after Lev as Abby I wanted to see Abby and lev live on and find the fireflies, however I also wanted Ellie to live in peace with Dina and their child, however Ellie still kept seeing Joels demise in her mind. And she believes to stop this she must then kill Abby, but when finding Abby and on the verge of killing her, she see's Joel before he died and in their final conversation. Then leaves Abby and Lev to find a new life in the fireflies after realising this won't fix her problem overcoming Joels death. The first half of the game I was unsatisfied by only the story, the second half fixed that for me. And finding out that Joel was in peace and relieved with how Ellie was ready to forgive him for saving her, left me with a sense of happiness for the characters. Overall I enjoyed the game and I feel like I could of enjoyed the story a bit more if Joels death wasn't as soon or brutal, and Ellie and Joel were on happier terms. Apart from that, visuals are amazing, gameplay is fun and rewarding.… Expand

    Excelent game with a raw, deep but mostly humane story. I don’t give it a 10 only for the lack of gameplay innovation, but it was still great. Enjoyed it a lot.

Although there were certain parts I wasn't happy with such as Abby's section because of how it strays to far from the main story for too long. However when taking in the rest of the game and Ellie's story, I found myself playing through intense situations that had my pulse pounding in such an exciting way. There are going to be moral choices made in the game that not everyone will be happy with, but I feel that this game is an absolute must play.… Expand

    The storyline is downright nonsense. Last of us 1 is so much better. I feel really betrayed because I was waiting for this game for a long time even though I am not a gamer!! I jsut like the last of us 1 a lot and thought the last of us 2 would be the same - with better graphics and an an amazing storyline - but then everything changed........in a way that is irrational and illogical.

I wanted to turn it off so many times, struggled to get through the game for a terrible ending. Graphics are amazing, some parts of the story are good but I just am so let down by what they've done, playing as Abbey made no sense I skipped most of her cut scenes I don't get why they did what they did.     I went into this game apprehensively. I was concerned because Troy Baker wanted us to have an "open mind" going in. That's usually code for you're not going to like what you see here.

    I knew about the leaks but I intentionally avoided all of them. So, other than the one comment from Troy, I was going in blind. Surprisingly, when the game started off I didn't have any issues with it.    I went into this game apprehensively. I was concerned because Troy Baker wanted us to have an "open mind" going in. That's usually code for you're not going to like what you see here.

    Surprisingly, when the game started off I didn't have any issues with it. However, it soon became apparent that Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann had a scratch to itch with this game's story, characters be damned.

    Neil has gone to Twitter and said that they won't pander to the fans of the original game, which is fine. Tell the story that you want to tell. If you want to tell a dark story, then do so creatively. If you want to take these characters on a journey into the pits of hell, then do so creatively. If you want to discuss how revenge makes monsters of us all, then do so creatively. What you don't do, is give us this story that is so amateurish in its execution that it was genuinely a chore to slog through.

    It's almost as if ND engineered this story from the end and worked their way backwards. How do I get the characters here? Oh, well this has to happen and that has to happen regardless of whether it makes any sense or not. The plot should serve the characters not the other way around. This is why you have multiple characters behave in uncharacteristic ways just so ND can get to where they want to go with their story.

    This same story could be told, even with all of its issues, in a much better fashion. How is it that the last game came out in 2013 and this is the best that they could do? This game's story drags the whole game down. I actually wanted the game to just end when I got to the farm. This wasn't because I thought that would be a good way to end the game. I simply wanted the game to end because I didn't care anymore. As a storyteller, I'm sure that's the last thing you want, but as a gamer I can tell you what I don't want: The Last of Us Part III. Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann made sure of that.

    I really wanted to like this game. The first game was amazing, a 10/10 experience. I am by no mean a professional reviewer but even by my standards 10/10 scores are extremely rare.    … Expand

    I don’t understand why there are so many 0 scores here. This might not be a masterpiece or as good as part one. But this is definitely a fantastic game, game of the year imo. Lastly, I like Ellie and I like Abby too.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. People who are saying that the game is bad, clearly did not want to understand what the game brings, nor did they try to see what happens in the history of the game. I think who complains about the game took these points into account:
    -There is no right or wrong side, everyone is wrong
    -The relationship between Ellie and Dina is not super sexualized as many lgbt + relationships are portrayed in different media
    -The humanization of Abby not putting her as a villain but as an ordinary human being who has normal feelings just like Ellie
    -The clear leveling of Abby, with Ellie, because they both wanted revenge, what differs is that Abby had her revenge but it didn't change anything in her life, she didn't bring her father back, since Ellie realized that taking revenge I wouldn't bring Joel back and that revenge is empty.
    Honestly those who complain about the story clearly did not want to understand or play the game properly. And do not mask your homophobia with meaningless comments saying that the story has holes and is poorly developed, people who have not even played the game want to have an opinion, will play the last the entire us 2 and then give a note. That concept we all loved is intentionally stripped from the second game right from the beginning, with the exception of a few infrequent flashbacks that don't really add much to the plot after Joel is treated like a side character.

    Instead, TLOU2 focuses on a revenge narrative. It's about hate instead of love - a bold choice to go in the opposite direction. At times, we empathize with the characters and Ellie in particular, but ultimately it feels like senseless violence (which is the point) and we are meant to take an objective stance on it. There are also a few plot holes, instances of characters acting inconsistently compared to their behavior in the first game, character development occurring after the deaths of important people (in flashbacks), times when the player has to suspend disbelief, not too much additional lore, and a plethora of weird pacing issues. Some of it is very hard to get through because the characters we grew to love are treated like dirt and treat each other like dirt as well.

    That being said, the story is highly controversial and simply not for everyone. Personally, it was a deal-breaker for me and left me feeling miserable. So much missed the mark for me that it would take up another review entirely for me to explain. The plot is a mess.

    Additionally, at times the weight of each character's actions doesn't seem as real as in the first game because the survival element is a lot less prominent. Ellie can infinitely knife enemies or chop them to pieces. Abby is a complete badass with more strength than any of the male characters and an army on her side, although it's a bit weird how she can't find a knife for stealth too. The first game was just Joel and a kid (Ellie) versus the world. However, during certain segments while fighting the infected, there are some tough moments. It's a lot of fun playing as Abby in particular because her segments are so intense and varied.

    The gameplay, animation, sound, music, voice acting, and graphics are all phenomenal. There are new crafting options, controls, and now there's vertical level design. Unfortunately, there's an overabundance of cutscenes and walking/horse-riding as opposed to actual combat to the extent that a lot of it feels like filler. The game doesn't even pick up until roughly 30 minutes in. I think the developers forgot they were making TLOU2 at times and not Uncharted 5 - not that Uncharted is bad by any means, but it's clearly a different series. And besides certain intense areas when you play as Abby, most of the game's chapters feel like random progression, whereas in the first game every segment was engaging and unique. Not too much is particularly memorable and the game overall is far too long for its own good.

    One thing people wished was rumor (according to the leaks), but is unfortunately true, is the heavy implementation of progressive politics. I don't think most players care if a character is a lesbian, for example, but why make it central to her entire identity and the plot? On top of that, Abby is comically muscular, two other women are bisexual (one not shown in-game), there is a homosexual WLF enemy, and there's another new character who is a trans child. I found myself asking, "Is this a game about fungus zombies or sexual identity, feminism, and gender?" The LGBT community is so small, and yet in this universe, there's a massive over-representation of LGBT characters in a post-apocalyptic world, all converging in Seattle. It just doesn't make sense for a series that's known for its realism.

    Still, even despite its flaws, this is an okay game with a lot of new content to offer compared to the first. It's far better without making the comparison. These are two entirely different games.    … Expand

While the basics are flawless, the narrative lacks purpose, the character arcs miss genuine inflection and the driving force of the whole story feels empty and does not provide justifiable motivation. Overall TLOU provides a fun experience for those not familiar with the theme and purpose presented in the original, however when compared as a sequel it would be safe to say that the story that kept players anticipating for 7 years is was predictable, uninspired and seems to cater to less complex themes (such as vengeance, heartbreak and abandonment). The story arc of TLOU Part 2 detracts from the importance of your actions, and instead forces you into uncomfortable situations for nothing more than shock value and hollow motivation; of which you spend the next 20 hours tracing a predefined ending with little to no closure over. While it is clear that NaughtyDog left room for Part 3, I would have to advise against it, fearing worse bastardization of a story meant to inspire visceral emotion, that instead caters to impulse and bloodlust with little to no moral ambiguity to ponder over.… Expand

    Very well written story. Never have i ever engaged more with a game and felt more emotionally tied to the main characters. I was aware of the leaks so was a bit apprehensive but i went in with an open mind and they have done a really good job with the story as i have grown to really love Abby as well now. Playing it multiple times have led to me seeing encounters i wasn't even aware off, and the foreshadowing for future events is really good. The use of Ellie's Journal for her thoughts is phenominal, especially after she kills Mel and is suffering. She questions her own motives, which is why the ending was fine for me - It was never ever purely about revenge. As heartbreaking as the ending was, I believe it was the nicest thing we could have had for Ellie. She lost so much, I needed an end to all her guilt and that is exactly what we got

    Drawbacks i have for it are that I would have preferred a nice balance between the two characters. Abby felt like fight after fight whilst Ellie was story after story. I would have loved to see some more fighting from Ellie's aspect, and some more story telling from Abby's. I wasn't really that emotionally invested in Owen, Mel or Nora so felt unaffected when Abby went back to seek revenge for them. (Maybe thats what N-dog wanted, idk but I would've preferred some more story telling for Abby there (especially with Owen).

    Also, there is no MULTIPLAYER. Very gutting. Plus so far there is no prospect for any DLC?!?!?!? I would have loved to see more about their life in Jackson, or some more about what Tommy and Joel got up to.

    I would like to have enjoyed to play with Ellie and Dina abit more. Their chemistry was fabulous.

    Overall, its a well thought out game. People hating on it for no reason imo and kudos to the ENTIRE naughty dog team. Even though people have mixed reviews about the game, there is no doubt about the hard work you done in making the environment, sounds, and accessibility.    … Expand

It happens that, being this is a The last of us and that his story is an insult compared to the first, it is what makes this my opinion about the game. Joel's death is not what makes it a bad game, moreover, it is the way he dies. There are so many "coincidences" that occur in this scene that makes it seem too surreal. Another point that seemed very ridiculous to me was the fact that Ellie started with her revenge, killing many people in order to get to Abby, and in the end saying that she does not want to do it, because "Revenge is bad, it kills the soul and poisons her. " Yes, that circle of hatred and revenge has ended, but the damage has already been done and for forgiving the last person does not mean that you will forgive everything. It's too late to regret it, there's no reason to do something as stupid as what happened in the end. Another thing I did not like, I felt the story about Abby quite forced, I think nobody is interested in knowing the story of, someone who has just killed one of the most beloved characters in the game. It feels like they want you to feel sorry for that person, when deep down you just want to play with Ellie and go straight for revenge on her. The scenes of romance, especially Owen's with Abby, I was like What the **** am I watching, a soap opera or a story in a world full of infected? My conclusion: this is not a The Last of Us, it is a Love Problem in a world full of zombies.… Expand

Characters have shallow motivations and act nothing like they did in the first game, they lack personality and depth, and the story comes across as nothing but lazy compared to the beauty of Part I, as it is completely riddled with plot holes.     The only saving grace of the story is the flashbacks which remind you of both the first game and what this game could have been. Sadly 2/10 is the highest this game can achieve for me as what is a story game without a compelling gripping story?    … Expand

    If you play slow and take the time to explore everywhere it can take almost 30 hours to complete, on the switch side if you play through quickly it can take 20 hours or under.

    For me it took 26 with a blend of taling the time to explore certain areas. Let me start off by saying this game is absolutely beautiful! It's the most beautiful game I have ever played by far. The environments, level design, and character design is just through the roof!

What made the first game great was seeing Joel and Ellie's develop a father-daughter relationship. They persevered through rocky times and basked in short, heartwarming moments before reaching an ultimately bittersweet ending.

    The Last of Us II takes what made the first story great and throws it out the window. While dark, brutal moments are expected in a post-apocalyptic type environment, killing off Joel so early and in such a gruesome manner just set up the game for disappointment. Then making the player play as Joel's killer and for an extended duration is just rubbing salt in the wound.

    The gameplay, while solid and with some satisfying melee, isn't enough to make up for the lack of interest that sets in after Joel's death and only compounds when switching to Abby.

    I see what the director and writer were going for and their desire to do something a bit daring with the story is commendable. However, the execution just falls flat on its face. Thez wanted a divisive game and it certainly succeedes on that front.    … Expand

    This game touched my emotional in a way that I can't explain.
    It's really amazing what Naughty Dog did with this franchise so loved by me and the rest of the fans. She had the courage to let someone come out of nowhere and kill Joel in such a brutal and sad way, and then, in the middle of the game, show the motivation of whoever killed him, in this case Abby.
    I'm sad about everything that happened to Ellie, she's my favorite character, I love her since the first game and even more in Part II, but her search for revenge, in the end, left her with nothing and alone. She simply lost everything she had, but because of herself.

    I don't understand how anyone might not have liked the game. Maybe it's because they still don't understand that it's not a game to make you happy or have fun, but a game to make you reflect and put an end to your emotional.
    Simply a work of art.

    É realmente incrível o que a Naughty Dog fez com essa franquia tão amada por mim e pelo resto dos fãs. Ela teve a coragem de deixar alguém aparecer do nada e matar Joel de uma maneira tão brutal e triste, e então, no meio do jogo, mostrar a motivação de quem o matou, neste caso Abby.
    Estou triste por tudo o que aconteceu com Ellie, ela é minha personagem favorita, eu a amo desde o primeiro jogo e ainda mais na Parte II, mas sua busca por vingança, no final, a deixou sem nada e sozinha. Ela simplesmente perdeu tudo o que tinha, mas por causa de si mesma.

    Eu não entendo como alguém pode não ter gostado do jogo. Talvez seja porque eles ainda não entendem que não é um jogo para fazer você feliz ou se divertir, mas um jogo para fazer você refletir e pôr um fim ao seu emocional.
    Simplesmente uma obra de arte.

    While I did respect the gameplay, and this is a major graphical improvement, the story is just not great. This game is unsatisfying, depressing, and above all not what anyone wanted. Naughty dog has destroyed their own magnum opus, spat in it's face, and false advertised it to be something entirely different. It's no wonder this game got leaked, it almost feels like an intentional disaster.

Some characters I tried desperately to like (despite their controversial actions) ended up being very uninteresting and I found myself having to force myself to continue the game. I also found some major characters to be completely unlikable, yet the developers attempt to make us care and sympathize with them through very cheap tactics (namely forcing us to commit horrid acts to justify another characters actions). Older characters stray away from their established values and skills, with completely out-of-character actions with little to no logical explanation. Story is a very cliché "the cycle of revenge is bad" plot and seems to make the player do terrible things simply to be edgy and create "shock value". The fact that much of the player base literally does not want to continue playing because they have to play as a certain character tells you enough about how unlikable some of the characters are. And no, successfully eliciting certain emotions from the player does not mean the story is good, it is because the first game's characters were so well developed that people are emotional as to what happens to them in a sequel. The story also feels dragged on almost double to how long it should have been, and I found myself completely losing motivation to continue playing. A story that subverts expectations isn't necessarily good. There is a good way to do it and a bad way to do it, and because the writers seem to only do this for shock value, I think this game does not execute this aspect well. Although I can appreciate many aspects of the game, such as graphics, animations, accessibility options, AI, sound design, level design, and voice actors, I overall cannot recommend this game because the story is such a pivotal component of something like The Last of Us, and it seems to be an extreme letdown compared to the first game.… Expand

And if i read this bad reviews it pretty clear that their are almost no reasons explained why the game is "that bad", most of this bad reviews just say "the story is **** yes well but why is it **** and "the game is horrible" but why is it horrible. This kinda Fanboys/girls are no fans of this series from my point of view, they just wanted a "Last of Us" where Joel and Ellie survive together, maybe a new doc who can make a vaccine but gets killed....., i think u guys know what i mean. I did not pay for playing a charackter that was not even mentioned and I hate so much. The try to emotional conect me with Abby didnt workt for me. Many people say that they see that abby has a good side, but she does not. When Ellie kills someone I can see her feelings but when abby kills someone I just see a Psycho. And the moment when abby spared Ellie an Dina , that was not her, it was leth, without him she would have killed both (I mention that moment, because many people say, that from this moment, they ssee the good thing in abby.

    The game, especially this story, is a big disappointment for me. The guiding principle of the Americans is always revenge. Too bad that the author was treated so badly. I would have loved to play her second part. These extremely good press ratings are probably attributed to the sjw. Btw my criticism has nothing to do with playing women. I also played tomb raider and horizon and found them great.

    I was hoping the game was going to be as good as the previous game however that wasn't going to be the case. At first I tried to avoid the leaks but I couldn't help to look at them and I wasn't happy with the outcome but, I said to myself that maybe there not like that in the game not only where they in the game but, they were worse.     Awful story which destroys any pleasure that you could have playing this game. Repetitive game play with almost all of the game play mechanics taken from the previous game.

It's truly sad that they threw away what they built up in the first game and did to the characters, just Joel alone acted completely out of character. It could have been a great, beautiful game but what they made it out to be is another mainstream, political agenda forced upon us. Of course the graphics are phenomenal and the acting too, but the story unfortunately destroys it completely and makes me wish I had never played the game in the first place.… Expand

No one talks about graphics, controls, other details (that was quite good actually)..The main tragedy is the script. just for fun kill the main character Joel and when play as his killer, seriously ??? seriously??? No one cares about her s..t story, half of the the game playing by Abby's character, the feeling was like we were being raped. And as a result, Ellie's role ... teenager, who didn't care about Joel, she practically hates him and what kind of revenge was that??? I...cannot even finish this review...My money was thrown into the trash...A huge disappointment and hopefully they won’t make part 3 anymore, enough of this nonsense.… Expand

    Tenía tremendo potencial, pero quedaron en lindos graficos, no innovaron en nada, (como suele hacerlo naughty dog), y la historia, fuera de toda excusas de "fobias", como quiere hacerlo ver Druckman, está mal organizada, te obliga a jugar con un personaje con el que no quieres jugar, ni comparado al carisma de los personajes de la primera entrega.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then...
