You have to be an idiot to rate a game before playing it!!
First thing, you can not judge a game only based on its story, unless its just about the story which is not the case with last of us, second, just because you don't like the events in the game it doesn't mean its a bad story. YOU IDIOTS

This game combines all of the best features of past naughty dog games, and although the story is at points so dark and painful that the narrative can feel difficult to play through, it is absolutely worth sticking with.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a total mess compared to the masterpiece that was the first game. The 4 million people who bought this game did so because of the first game's story. I could just play another zombie game if I wanted only that, people expected fun combat along with a story that can live up to the original. What we get is a serious disrespect to the main character from the original game, Joel Miller. They make him act very out of character by telling the wolves his identity and walking into a suspicious ass building without a second thought. Remember when Joel saw a hunter on the road pretending to be injured and knew exactly what the hunters were trying to do? That guy is gone. From a hardened survivor and a badass who was very smart and cautious to the type of guy that tells complete strangers his social security number(not that they have social security anymore in the apocalypse but you get the point). Before I played the game I will admit that I knew Joel was going to die, and I wasn't surprised. I wasn't angry at that point because I thought he would go out in a better fashion(pretty much any other way would have been better). When Abby starts beating on him with a golf club I was sad but not angry, at that point I accepted that he was going to die. When they made Ellie watch it happen that is what set me off and I had to set the game down for a few days before I was willing to play more. Not to mention that Neil Druckmann(Manny) himself spit on Joel, it felt like him metaphorically spitting on the legacy of the first game. If you want to know how to actually kill a main character right, just look at Lee from The Walking Dead. I wasn't angry at all, but actually heartbroken and I burst into tears when Lee dies. It's a very emotional moment and a great way to kill off the main character the right way. He spent the last hours of his life saving Clementine, he cared not about himself but only about her at that point. It was a very heroic main character death and amazing storytelling. Now I want you to imagine if Clementine was forced to watch Lee's head get bashed in by a golf club. Do you think fans would react differently? Don't you think that is a much worse way to kill off the main character? Then explain to me why it's any different for The Last of Us Part II, which was based off another zombie game where a grown man with a past of violence traveled across America protecting a little girl he treats like his daughter.

I didn't write a review until I finished the game and the game didn't get any better. The story was stale almost the entire time except for the Joel flashbacks. If we just had a DLC that showed Ellie and Joel years after the first game living in Wyoming, that would have been enough for me.

Now I want to talk about She-Hulk. Wait sorry, Abby. This game makes a terrible effort to make you empathize with her. She saved a seraphite and had sex on a boat, does that mean it's okay to bash someone's "father's" head in and make them watch it happen? Remember how the first game starts off with Sarah's heartbreaking death scene and makes you empathize with Joel? He isn't a good guy, but not evil either. He's just a survivor like everyone else. When he saved Ellie and it looked identical to him carrying Sarah at the beginning of the game you empathized with Joel because he can't lose another "daughter". That is good storytelling. He didn't kill Abby's father in front of her brutally. He was just trying to save Ellie. I think that if she just killed Joel that would be completely justified, instead she traumatizes Ellie when Ellie has no family and treated him like her dad. They made us empathize with Joel despite the people he killed and his selfishness in saving Ellie. On the other hand they made a piss-poor effort to make you empathize with Abby. It could have been a lot better if we saw flashbacks of Abby and her father. I may have felt bad for Abby then. Instead we learn about her boyfriend and watch her have sex on a boat. No cutscenes with her father, nothing. When we see her save a seraphite it doesn't make me empathize with her whatsoever. Yara and Lev saved Abby and she helped them, she helped former cultists because they saved her life. One person who also saved her life was Joel. He personally kills the runner who was attacking Abby and both Joel and Tommy help her. After he did that she didn't empathize with him at all. She didn't bother questioning why Joel killed her dad and talking to him. Yet she empathizes with cultists who saved her? What really irks me is that she made Ellie watch it happen. Abby didn't have to watch her dad die unlike Ellie. This is blatantly bad writing and storytelling, and I don't understand how this could be worthy of a 10/10.

The combat is mostly the same as the original but it felt extra brutal and realistic(although I don't appreciate a game forcing me to kill dogs). The graphics are beautiful, but none of that can redeem this game.

Ellie the personable, lively woman. However, after Joel's death, it changed. Abby gets a guilty conscience, you can see how she tries to do something good with Lev. While Ellie continues to fall into the spiral of hate and revenge. You can see how the personalities change due to the struggles and how they express themselves verbally. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I finished the game four days ago and since then I've been so sad.

It is heartbreaking to see your most loved videogame destroyed like this.

    - I did not hate the game because of LGBT agenda ->actually I am left-wing and I secretly liked that so many homophobic gamers had to face with these topics (and hopefully they get more comprehensive). So I would keep it exactly as it was.
    - I did not hate the game because Joel died. Come on, Joel dying was the only motivation strong enough to make Ellie pursue revenge, so from first trailer when we found out that the sequel was about revenge, we all knew already that Joel would have died to make this credible -> so no big deal

I hated the game because the story is pointless, weak, not credible.
Such a complex universe, in which you can talk about love vs. ethics, cure to the humanity, self improvement, so many things, you focus your game on revenge? Just a pure revenge without any revelation in the path? It was so funny that in Every scene I was making so many theories, expecting a creative plot from naughty dog like:
-Tommy never left Jackson and Maria was kind of a villain, that wrote that fake letter to instigate Ellie to go for revenge and leave Tommy with her
    - The godness of Seraphite was actually people adoring an utopic old version of "Ellie, the immune woman" and she would find out it later after many died on her name
    - Jessie "the super popular guy" was actually working with Abby and helping her since the beginning - Ellie left JJ and Dina for what we think that was a revenge, but actually she wanted to offer herself to Abby so she could be taken to a hospital and finally die for the sake of a vaccine

Hahahah Of course, all of this seem crazy now. But it was just me expecting/hoping for ANY kind of plot twist or revelation( like the one we have at the end of Uncharted 4) but no. The plot was so linear, simple, idiot, that it never happened.

It was just about killing our preferred character (I'm ok with the death, but not ok with non- meaningful way it happened), going for revenge, can't get it and come back home with family. Then a coward adult goes to ask cruelly a young woman to abandon her family and goes all by herself on revenge, oh just because "you promised". Then she goes (this decision of abandoning family by themselves in an apocalyptical world which is not credible), finds Abby but at the end forgives her because she learns that "revenge is not good". That is ridiculous.
So many points that this story could have developed... Part 1 was so deep, so complex, so human and they just destroyed everything. Ok, gameplay nice, graphics really good (actually I found Uncharted 4 way more pretty in facial details and scenario), ok with all of this. But this is a story driven game and story must be the central part of it, you can't deny that. And the plot is just horrible.

I wish they never had done this videogame. I am so so sad. A bad type of sad. Because when I finished Arthur's part in Rdr2, I was also extremely sad for Arthur but sad in a good way, in a magic way. In the last of us 2, I am sad in a bad way, disappointed, upset because I can't believe how they ruined the story, characters, universe, the franchise.

    Oh my God. Really.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It’s a trash story. Filled with absolute nonsense.
They dumb down Joel's character on purpose to make him weak and stupid. In the first game he was very smart and had a ton of experience. He didn't even trust a guy that was sick on the road. He chose to run him over. Later we find out that stranger on the road was not sick and it was all a set up. They do everything to make you dislike Joel and continue to spit on him. They have a trans female/male shoot him in the leg and torture him with a golf club right in the first 2 hours of the game. They spit on him literally. They made Ellie unlikable and a selfish human being. She kills everyone and continued to blame Joel for saving her life. She cared so much in saving humanity because she has the immunity but instead she became a lesbian and chose not to reproduce. Let that sink in. She even let's Abby the one that tortured and murdered Joel in front of her get away with it. Abby also bit off two of Ellie's fingers. Her letting Abby go is basically saying Joel deserved dying. A loveable character who is the main character of the game. There was no justice for Joel. This game robbed everything from you just for shock value. The current narrative of destroying the male character to make the female character rise is very weak story telling. It is disrespectful to both genders. Females even hate it. Worst of all the pacing of the story is horrible. You literally play as Abby the character we hate for half the game. They tried so hard to make us like her but none of it worked. This game is a waste of time and money and should have never been created as a sequel. The critics are liars and they don't care about what the fans want. They only care about their political narrative and force you to like something that you will never accept. Then they insult you by calling you names because you don't like the product they are praising. They are the worst kind of human being. Trust the gamers that actually love playing the kind of video games you like. Those are the ones who you should listen to. Vote with your wallet and avoid this dumpster fire. Why care for a game created by a studio that is run by Neil Druckmann who is a male feminist and does not care about the fans and the people he works with. That's why 75 percent of Naughty dog left the company due to how he treated them. This game is created by people that don't care about you and backed by people that hate you. The game wasn't made for the fans and gamers. Vote with your wallets and avoid this at all cost. Especially how they are trying to trick everyone with false advertisement into buying this. Look it up on YouTube. Don't trust the shill media. Watch the negative videos about this game and you will see the truth. Long live Joel and RIP to The Last of Us franchise. Seriously

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Big spoilers SPOILER ALERT. Joel dies Ellie chicken out at the end and so does Abby. You kill a lot of people hunting down Abby which means a lot of new enemies and families who will probably want revenge all to find and kill Abby. However at the end you don’t kill her I think it should have been a choice at the end were you could kill Abby or not. Me I would have killed her then restart from the last save point so that I could kill her again. But Abby is alive at the end you did not get justice for Joel. If you want to make a realistic game then do the realistic stuff in the apocalypse if someone kills your father or the man who was a father to you and you hunt them down and kill a lot of people on the way you don’t chicken out you kill them. As for Abby if you are going to make a character who will torture and kill you for killing someone who is important to her then have her be that way the whole time don’t change who they are. Her friends were killed and she just chickens out when she was about to kill Ellie and her girlfriend that is not the character I was shown in the beginning of the game. Another thing they dumped down Joel in the first game he was able to tell that it was an ambush and does not stop the truck but he can’t tell that something is off. If I was Joel no way would I tell someone my real name I just met them I would give people a fake name and change the fake name every so often they really don’t have pictures they new it was him because he said I’m Joel. Bottom line I was mad when they killed of Joel I did not feel attached to Ellie and did not really care if Ellie killed Abby or if Abby killed Ellie I just wanted the person I was playing was to kill the person who was trying to kill them I was not on ether side because I did not care if either one of them died. The game story did not keep my interest. In my opinion it is nowhere near the masterpiece that first game was. The combat is good and the groups are interesting one thing I will say is I like the crafting and how they do zombies in the most realistic way possible I think that the game is a winner how it plays and the world but the story is nowhere near as good as the first game. The gameplay is serviceable, it isn't groundbreaking in any way and changes very little from the phenomenal first game, but there's nothing wrong with it, it works. Graphics and the overall atmosphere are great, no argument here. However, the neglect shown to the story in a story-driven game absolutely baffles me. It's not even about the fan service and the fact that many people hated to see Joel die. It's about the cheap plot tools that the devs use to get emotions out of you. In the first game, your reaction to the game was natural, here, I was mostly sighing and rolling my eyes, because of course I have to kill a dog and of course she is pregnant (there are like 3 instances of this happening btw). As a standalone game, where you weren't familiar with the characters and the world, TLOU2 might have actually been a better game. But whether Druckmann and ND wanted it or not, this game is a sequel and thus will be compared to its predecessor. And as a successor, The Last of US 2 fails miserably. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Getting this out of the way quickly: This game isn't as good as the first one. It's almost impossible to live up to the standard of the first one, simply because of one thing: expectations. The first game came out to almost no fanfare, mainly because it was a brand new IP in a genre that had started to wear out its welcome (zombie apocalypse survival), and became a smash hit, primarily because of the emotionally resonant story. This game had expectations on it as soon as it was revealed, so it was almost impossible to please everybody with this.

That being said... here's what I liked and disliked about it:

    Pros:
    1) Gameplay is still solid
    - While most of the mechanics are the same as the first one (no complaints there), there are some new additions that keep things fresh and interesting, such as swimming, dodging, rope mechanics, dogs that can sniff out your position, new types of infected, crawling, silencers on pistols, and more.

    2) Visually stunning
    - This one is pretty obvious. Even the negative reviews of the game acknowledge this.

    3) Acting is top-notch
    - You won't find much better acting performances in any video game ever, especially the leads (Joel, Ellie, and Abby). Even the seemingly-minor characters are performed well.

    4) Narrative risk-taking that paid off
-This is where things might get controversial. Naughty Dog took some huge risks in this game, and the fallout from these risks is readily apparent (Joel dying early on, and playing as Joel's murderer for most of the second half of the game, is what most of the negative gripes on the game are). However, I personally think they worked: while playing as Abby was a little frustrating at first, you begin to realize that there is more than one perspective in this apocalyptic universe... everybody is the hero of their own story. Because we were only exposed to Joel and Ellie's point of view in the first game, it is easy to say that they're the good guys. However, looking at the first game's ending from an outsider's view (someone that isn't emotionally involved in Joel and Ellie's story), you see a man who took away the chance at a potentially life-changing cure because he wanted to save a little girl, killing everyone he ran into along the way. Once you see it that way, it's hard to think of Joel as a hero. Even Ellie seems to think Joel did the wrong thing. Playing as Abby basically forces the player to humanize with the "enemy," making us empathize with all of the people that we spent the first half of the game brutally murdering. Once you get into Abby's story a bit, things turn around, and honestly the game picks up quite a bit in terms of set pieces and exciting encounters. Games like this take the choice out of the player's hands and force them to live with the choices these players make, and if one can shun their hate for just a moment and try to relate to these characters, the result is pretty rewarding. Plus, most of the fun stuff (gameplay-wise) happens in Abby's story, if you can make it there.

    5) Story as a whole is resonant
-I personally don't think the story is as bad as people say. Even though I was exposed to the leaks before playing, I tried not to let those things ruin it for me. I'll say this: context matters a lot in films and video games alike. Just reading out the plot points will make almost every story seem boring and poorly-written. In this case, the story unfolds naturally, and if you let it, it all makes sense and doesn't feel ham-fisted into the narrative in order to make something happen. While the brutal violence didn't make me question my actions like a lot of reviewers say, the idea that the cycle of revenge isn't good for anyone was a good lesson to end on.

    Cons:
    1) The ending
-I didn't hate what the ending was going for... I just feel that the way they executed it was sloppy. I can kind of forgive Abby not killing Ellie and Dina in the theater (Lev was there and convinced her it not to do it, but it still feels wrong), it was a little harder to forgive Ellie not killing Abby at the end. At first, she seemed content with letting her go as they walked to the boats, then she suddenly wants to kill her, and then... she doesn't? I get that change of heart happens, but three times in the span of a couple minutes? They could have executed it a lot better.

    2) Game doesn't get truly exciting until the second half
    - I didn't hate the set pieces and the encounters in the first half as Ellie, but... it all felt the same as the first game. As much as I loved the first game, I want things to feel a LITTLE different... it got stale fast. Sadly, you have to get past the Abby vitriol in order for the game to get truly fresh and exciting.

    3) Some of the characters sucked
-Although the main characters are great, some of the side characters are just... there. Characters like Jesse and Dina and don't really have visible personalities, they just exist, making it hard to really care about them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II deals in some aspects that I've never seen in a game before. It respects the true narrative of Ellie's story, as she's not the sweet girl from before the final act of the first game. A lot has gone through her mind in those years after the hospital massacre.. she feels guilty about those lives taken by Joel, but she also wants to forgive him, and that's brilliantly shown in the flashbacks. Of course, the narrative could've been different, and that's my issue, but that's art. The concept of art is not giving us what we want, but to give us something from the point of view of the artist. I've become very found of Abby, as I learned her story. She's a victim of Joel's rampage to save Ellie and that's one of the reasons I think she spared Abby in the end. Joel loved Ellie, but he was traumatized by what happened to Sarah and his wife, in that he couldn't bare to lose the last person he really cared about (of course there's Tommy, but you know what I mean). The things he did culminated on his death, and the narrative does not have flaws right here.
The gameplay and graphics are incredible. I grew tired of the same stealth kill animations after sometime, and that's my main issue. It's a stealth game, they should've invested more on this.
The story is not for everyone. If you're someone who sees same sex relationships with prejudice and disrespect, you should not play this game.. actually you should stick to games with muscular men and things like that (every homophobic has a fragile masculinity). Other than that, the story is painful. Heavy. And you need to pay attention to everything so you don't become an internet troll, throwing in the trash the effort of the people involved in this amazing project.
A great game. Surely GOTY 2020!

Incredible visuals, gameplay and story telling, a worthy sequel to the groundbreaking original.

no multiplayer and the story swings and misses. The worst thing is to ruin the ambiguity of the original finale for this story about "the circle of violence".

The Last of Us Part II might be set in a post-apocalyptic world, but its themes and its effect are both incredibly fitting for 2020.

Invested from beginning to end, I spent an arduous and emotional six days to complete it. It proved my theories that video games are the future medium for entertainment. In a world where movies have grown stagnant and television has taken over, there’s nothing like experiencing a story you’re actually a part of.

In a game like this, it’d be cheap and ill-fitting to give the player choice. And I say this as a person who had difficulty pressing the square button a few times during it. Giving us choice takes away from the narrative and sticking to the narrative doesn’t feel like you’re not in control. It’s a matter of preference, as with everything, but for me, I’m satisfied with every part of it and am on a NG+ run through as we speak, noticing different things. That, and I also don’t know what game can ever follow this one up for me—not something I say lightly (I wasn’t big into God of War, for example.)

Loved it. Altered gaming just like the first.

This is a truly fantastic game. In terms of game-play, everything works better in comparison to the original. Movement is less clunky, stealth feels smoother, and weapons handle better. The addition of going prone is a huge boon to the stealth element of the game and makes for some tense moments hiding under cars, in grass or puddles.

Some folks are upset about the story, saying that characters do or do not 'deserve' certain things and that ND totally blew it. I could not disagree more. The story fits the brutal tone of the last of us world, provides several twists along the way, and concluded in the way I hoped for by the end of the journey. This game may not be the story that you specifically wanted for these characters, but it's a damn good tale all the same.

My main criticism is the chronology. The order of the game could probably be changed to make things flow better, but again, overall a fantastic game.

I don't understand why so many people have given negative reviews on this game. It's a marvelous game with a marvelous story. The story initially starts off with a clear distinction between the good and bad guys, but once you get to play as both of them and understand both of their stories... It somehow justifies almost everything and you sympathize with everyone. Essentially the game (and the franchise) highlights brutal humanity in the finest way possible. Though I'll agree that the ending was quite stretched out and felt a little unnecessary, and there are a few parts that irritated me a little. But overall still a good game. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
