    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished this game a few minutes ago after playing it for 13+ hours. The ending was extremely unsatisfying and it made the entire game pointless. The gameplay was good (I'd give it 7/10) but I don't really play single-player story games for the gameplay, and from what I've heard, the creator of this game said it wasn't meant to be fun. So if I just focus on the story, this would be my rating. Random side-plots about a character that I couldn't care less about, and a pointless overall story that doesn't achieve anything.
    Before this game, I used to trust critic reviews. I thought that "game critics being paid or biased" was just a meme, and I'm not really into that conspiracy theorist stuff that thinks game developers actually pay reviewers to give them a high rating. However, after I played this, I couldn't comprehend how any sane human being in the world could give this a 10/10. A 6/10 would be a lot more understandable because the gameplay is solid (nothing too revolutionary, but it's fine). A 7/10 would also be fine if you somehow actually liked the story. But a 10/10 score? There are games out there that are a million times more deserving of such a rating. I actually don't trust reviewers now after this. I used to think people just overreacted when they said critics are being biased or paid.    … Expand

    I played the entire game in one sitting, and it was so bad that I feel worse about the time i lost than the money. The story felt very jumbled, the AI was horrible, the game play was clunky, and the lag was unbearable. After the first game, this sequel is a complete disappointment. Honestly, I wish the game ended by it all being a dream.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After spending 20+ hours straight playing through this game I find myself wondering why? Not about why I played the game but why did the writers feel like this is the direction they want for their story? Yes Joel's death was inevitable but why kill him in the most unrealistic and unlikable fashion? Why is a beloved character being killed off by a character we have never met?

    Take your favorite show and think about that main character, you know the one who the show wouldn't work without. The one whose actor has won numerous rewards for their performance as. Sure this character may not be morally correct but still manages to find ways to empathize with the audience. Now imagine this character is randomly killed off half way through the story by a character we have never met who is now going to play a pivotal role to the story. This is objectively bad writing. And this is what happened in the last of us 2.

    The innumerable number flaws in this story leaves me feeling like I could write a book about it. So I'm going to focus on how the game feels rather than the nonsensical decisions and the unlikable characters. In the first game we are thrust into a world where violence and sadness is around every corner yet the player is often relieved of these emotions through Joel and Ellie's relationship. We may be in a world filled with violence and sadness but the story brings hope and happiness through this pseudo father daughter relationship. And it's beautiful. And it's part of the reason the first game was so beloved along with its characters.

    The second game does nothing to bring about positive emotions in the player. The already incredibly brutal violence of the first game has been magnified to a startlingly realistic proportion. And the game goes out of its way to showcase this violence. There is no reprieve from this violence, it goes from extreme violence to more violence then to sadness and back again. This game elicits no positive emotions in the player. The plot surrounding Abby's relationships tried to bring some relief to the story but it fell short as it was impossible for me to empathize with this character. Not to mention the bulk of her story was overwhelmingly sad and violent, following the trend throughout the rest of the game. We were allowed to experience some flashbacks of Ellie and Joel which I believe also tried to bring relief to the story but had the complete opposite effect. Seeing Joel and Ellie together only elicited more sadness, especially the flashbacks which demonstrated their collapsing relationship.

    To top the story off the few characters that actually do survive the story have literally lost everything. I'm not asking for happily ever after. I'm asking for a story whose overarching theme isn't to elicit depression in the viewer. Depression and sadness can be explored as a theme without bringing about that in the player, we can see this as overwhelmingly true in the first game. Not just throughout the game but also in its conclusion.

    In the end the player simply feels empty, not only were the characters we already knew empty versions of their old selves but the new characters also felt empty. We're forced to watch brutal violence over and over with the writers seemingly feeling like they are making a great point about this violence. What point is that? I really don't know. They seem to feel like showing extreme violence is making a point in and of itself yet its not. We watch the characters painstakingly tear down their entire lives and lose everything and every relationship they have in a suicide mission for revenge just to give up in the end after everything has been risked and subsequently lost. It's so nonsensical and unbelievable that it's insulting to the intelligence of the players. They act like this ending is making some great point about hatred, violence, and revenge but it completely falls flat as the game fails to establish any empathy for Abby. I feel like the writers wanted the player to leave the game having a greater understanding of the hatred within them self and what that kind of hatred can lead to. Yet the game elicited the opposite feeling from me, I wanted Abby dead and leaving her alive left me feeling completely unfulfilled. I found myself feeling angry over the fact that Abby lived.

    After walking away from the game I don't feel like I just witnessed something special. It feel like I played through some strange torture porn fantasy that was written by fans who had no regard for logical story telling. And ultimately the game not only feels devoid of characters and plot but also meaning.    … Expand

The few tiny bits that made the last of us (aka. the story) was shredded to pieces in the first hours of the game and left a sour bit, not only that, without it the rest was a generic survival game, that can honestly be a skipable experience.

    And I'm not even gonna comment about the worst ending in the history of video-games

    The leaks were better to swallow than this lack of respect against the fans, honestly i hope Neil Druckman doesn't direct a project ever again, but unfortunately this unbearable game will be considered for a goty... what a shame.    … Expand

    One of the worst sequel from a one of the best original story driving game, only driven by one way nonsense violence, with no choices or either reflection on its meaning; only to promote an agenda of a twisted naughty dev. In a story driving game, story matters and must stand on its own prequel and not spitting on it. Thanks to N.Druckman.

    The story is mediocre and cheap. Possibilities were endless but they picked a route that added up nothing to the overall world of TLoU and the characters we love so much. It's best to forget this game ever released and to pretend that the original game has no sequel.

    After I saw the leaks and the released gameplay footage of the entire game of course it’s all just one big beautiful mess as expected. This is not the sequel we never needed. Then the final boss, I just stopped watching the video, no satisfying ending what so ever. I wish I could give the game a negative -10.0

I was so hyped for this game that you would literally have to humiliate and brutally murder one of the main characters from the previous game to get me to dislike it. Even then, I would probably be open to one of the characters dying, if the story was presented in a compelling way. Unfortunately this story is not. In fact, you are tasked with playing as your hero's murderer halfway into the game, and the writer (Neil Druckmann) wants ever so bad to make you feel sorry for this character. To feel compelled by her story and to sympathize with her torturing and clubbing Joel to death. Well, Neil, I do not. This story reeks of shock factor for the mere existence of it. It is so far up its own ass you wonder how Druckmann ever came out for air to put this thing into existence.


    I would never recommend this game, especially to fans of the original. This is offensively terrible story writing and it's a shame that the first games writer (Bruce Straley) wasn't here to reign it in.    … Expand

    A good game or movie begins and ends with a good story. TLOU was amazing in this regard.

    Part 2 should continue that story, not destroy it just because they want to subvert expectations while pushing a personal political view over good story and logical writing. TLOU2 has some of the worst writing and plot choices that ultimately undo the first game.

    Gameplay wise, not much is improved. It’s quite plain and quite outdated in today’s standpoint. I really had a hard time finishing the game. The game mechanics is not very interesting. Also, there are too many jump scare and this thing gets annoying quickly. 6/10 mainly because    Story is just bad. Saw the spoilers when it got leaked and now seeing the game with my own eyes it angers me the amount of crap in it (the new characters are awful,bad writing decisions and too PC). And the gameplay is nothing special, any other third person shooter has done better than this. If you like it then i wontWasn't a big last of us 1 fan back when it launched, but now the sequel is even worse. And what Neil & woke clique give us after they fired especially talented writer Amy is this disgusting abomination. Favorite characters? Gone. Executed in cold blood by a guy in drag on steroids with a goddamn golf club. What makes it worse is that you get to play as the bloody murderer who bit Ellie's fingers off. Insanity. Naughty **** has gone insane and I believe Neil should be fired for this trainwreck, besides multiple complaints of his mistreatment of employees among other transgressions.… Expand

    Do not buy this game. This was a massive disappointment to the series. These characters were treated like trash and the story was pumped with nothing more than a lackluster revenge plot that wasn't even worth playing. The first game was so much better. Really wanted something more with this one.

    look compare it to the first part of game the game should be rated 0 but when i try to look at it in another way like it not a sequels of the first game the game kinda sucks the sexuality in this game not necessary at all but even the story line is boring Af and **** the game lose a lot of things and the game play kinda outdated in the end waste for time and money

    Another game that tries to push political agenda. Just like Battlefield 5 did. In the name of political correctness the game feels surreal and forced. In this game 80% of characters are woman just to show that woman are strong. All the man are idiots on this game. This is forced, its not feminism, it’s fantasy. Only good thing about this game is graphics

    I wonder how this really bad, piss poor writing, got aproved by everyone on ND? The game is a technical masterpiece, but the story is so bad, like really bad. What were they thinking?
    The way things unfold look like a lame fan fiction at best. What a waste! Such a beautiful game gone to the dumpster because of a weak and horrendous story behind it.

    The Last of Us Part 2 is not just a bad game, because of his death - nah! Naughty Dog promised to much and delivered too less.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I will try to leave spoilers out about the first game and focus more on the second game, The Last of Us Part 2 is why you are reading this review anyways.

    Remember the stong father like figure you played in the first game? Well now things are different. Did you think he would be very careful after having so much experience surving both hostile engagements from both human and infected? You thought wrong. Joel is killed very early on in the story, but for what purpose you may ask? Just to introduce a new character. Who the heck do they think they are? Who are they anyways? Here, let me answer that. They are the daughter of someone you killed. Let me narrow that down for you. Just the surgeon who was going to operate on Ellie in the first game. That person was the only npc players couldnt choose not to kill. You can stealth past entire sections in the game if you are good enough and it does allow you to have a bunch of ammo saved for the last level so it is worth it on higher difficulties. So the writers thought it would be a great idea to force a character in? Then they make us play as her? That is just insult to injury. They try to introduce a whole bunch of characters. It seems like a great idea, if they expanded on them and went deeper into their stories, but they dont do that. That turns out to be a waste of potential. So Ellie’s quest is to now seek revenge and go after the person that killed Joel. On this journey, she gets some new mechanics and some new tools, but deep down the gameplay feels and looks very similar to the first game. It is as if they brought in barely anything new. They did bring some new enemy types but that gets bland fast since their aren’t many new things you can do. The jump button is an overhyped thing, but going prone is pretty cool. As Ellie goes on her journey, she kills Abby’s friends and slowly gets closer as she tracks her down. Does she finally get her revenge? Well, here’s the message that Naughty Dog forces into their story. They want to push this idea that the circle of revenge is bad. Yes it is bad, but it also makes for bad story telling and a very unfun game. Aren’t video games supposed to be fun and enjoyable to an extent? Yes games should be challenging too, (I didnt find this version to be that difficult at all) but if the challenge gives the player reward and actual feeling of success and accomplishment, then it did its job. If it didnt, then why bother playing the game. In the end, Ellie does not carry out her revenge on Abby. She is blocked by a flashback of Joel and stops her from going through with it. Ellie goes back home to try and find herself. She cant find her friend Dina anymore. She lost several friends and Joel to Abby and her friends. She is alone in the world. At that point, Naughty Dog could have given players a chance to make a decison for themselves. It would not have saved the game, but allowed them to not force their message, but instead show what it means. The player just has no control and can’t carry out Ellie’s revenge. The cycle of revenge pauses and the game ends on a cliffhanger, easily setting up for a possible sequel. The story easily feels like a subverting expectations from Star Wars: The Last Jedi or Game of Thrones Season 8. There is just no payoff. It feels as if they had a story when they started, but then they scrapped it for something low quality so can fit a lot characters that mean almost nothing. Lev doesnt even have to be in the game. If you take out group that kidnaps children, then he doesnt even need to exist. That entire arc just feels like filler. The whole game is a weird fanfic that doesnt feel necessary to connect to the first game. Now for a retcon and something that really bothered me. Remember that moment in the first game where Marlene tells Joel about the possibilty of a vaccine? If you listen to the audio tapes, it is revealed that the Fireflies have found more immune people before knowing about Ellie. However, the procedure they performed kept killing them and no vaccine came from every attempt. Ellie was practically their last chance at a vaccine, but if you use logic, it is easy to see that they would just end up killing Ellie for nothing. That puts Joel in the right for rescuing Ellie right? (It is morally gray but hey it is the story of a man who doesnt want to lose his chance of being a father again and he does see the logic that their operation wouldnt save her or the human race.) It is hard to say right or wrong because Joel has done some bad things to survive. Does he tell Ellie all of this? The second game retcons and changes things. They mention cure and not vaccine. They dont mention any of the failed attempts the Fireflies have made which would mean their have been other immune people that existed or still exist, but would make no difference. So Ellie just hates Joel, for different reasons and changes to the story. It is like they didnt even care about the first game at all.    … Expand

    Thought i would give tlou2 a chance since the hype even though i didnt like the first one. I was again, disappointed. I found it mediocre at best just like the first game. Generic, bland and linear story, boring gameplay (although gameplay is slightly crisper than the first game) but great great visuals. Highly over rated in my opinion. I just dont get the hype for these games.

But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
