This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game felt a lot like the first one with a new theme and story. It's a layered tale with a somewhat murky ending. It's emotionally jarring but I feel like that was the intention. The gameplay is excellent for those who enjoy interactive movies. If you're already closed to the experience though, it will be hard to get into it. Personally I enjoyed a story about revenge, regret, and mourning. It's a look at a grief process in a world gone violent. Expand

The excessively long story is clearly a platform for left-wing political ideologies, while key characters from the first game are abruptly and rudely killed off.

Given the allegations of worker abuse at Naughty Dog and the lead developer’s affiliation to chauvinistic feminist journalists, this game should not be supported in any way.

(TLOU1 was amazing though, go play that again instead!)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like this game. Genuinely, I went into it with high expectations following TLoU, which is high up in my favorite games list. By this point I'm sure everyone know about some of the debate surrounding the game, but in case you don't I'll get into some of my issues with this game.

First let's touch on some of the lies Naughty Dog told. "You won't be forced to kill any dogs", lie. The trailer showed Joel in scenes that he's been replaced with entirely other characters saying those exact lines. Maybe not a lie but a horrible misdirection at best. Censoring people that have problems with the game and issuing DMCA strikes against anyone who dares to speak badly about the game. Naughty Dog has entirely lost my support on those matters alone.

Now I rated this game a 3/10 due to phenomenal graphics and sound design and smooth gameplay. The gameplay is nothing stellar and improves minimally on the first game's system which sounds at first like a good thing until you realize it's been 7 years and the gameplay was never the main draw of the first game anyway. To make matters worse, even with as smooth as the game is, the fights feel long, drawn out, and there aren't as many set pieces and cutscenes to break it up as there is in the first game. Without that, the gameplay gets boring and monotonous very quickly, less of a challenge and more of a chore. That's not saying that there aren't some very good moments in the game. When the Seraphites are hunting you as Ellie is amazing with the tension, chasing after Nora is one of the best moments in the game, and encountering the strange mutated infected with Abby is a lot of fun. But those moments are so spaced out and rare that they just can't make up for it.

Now for the story. I went into this expecting Joel to die, I always figured he was going to. But two hours into the game, while being stupidly trusting of strangers which Joel has never done before? He doesn't even try to fight back despite having a pistol on him and it's not like they were threatening Tommy. And before someone tries to argue that Joel had "gone soft", no. He participated in regular patrols and still killed quite often as they even show in the game. I expected Joel to die, but the way they killed him was horrible and wrong and Joel deserved a better death.

Then you play as Ellie and that's... fine? Ellie is different in this, there's very little of the Ellie left that we fell in love with in the first game, but she's older and angry about Joel so whatever. But most of her section is just so dreadfully boring. It gets better towards the end of it but it just felt like a narratively dead slog. Her relationship with Dina was forced at best and I don't like Dina anywhere near as much as I liked Ellie, Tommy's mentioned but barely in it, and Jesse... he's basically a nonentity. Then, right at what feels like the climax, where Abby has showed up to face you for killing all her "friends"...

You skip to playing Abby and the pacing of the game and all the tension comes to a dead, grinding halt so you can play the next 10 hours experiencing the story through Abby's point of view. I already hate Abby. I don't want to play as Abby. They try to make you sympathize with her by showing her being okay to her friends and playing with dogs but it doesn't work because they've already dead set you against her. Her father was a piece of crap too who showed more sympathy and caring to a zebra than a living and breathing 14 year old girl so any sympathy towards him and Abby for what Joel did there is dashed. Literally the only character I felt sympathy for on Abby's side was Mel... and the dog, Alice. Both of whom you already know are dead so you don't connect with them like the game wants you to. Abby is a piece of crap the entire time, getting together with Owen while knowing that he's still with Mel and she's freaking pregnant, and condoning and wanting to participate in torture. Because that's supposed to endear us to Abby?? I liked Lev and Yara if that helps? But Yara dies and Lev is nowhere near the personality that Ellie was so I felt very little connection to Lev.

When the end of the game came around it felt surreal in a very bad way. Why wait so long? And then let Abby go? If the lesson they were trying to teach is "revenge bad" why did Abby get away despite achieving her revenge?

I think what makes me most disappointed is that I see the potential this game had. It could've been good. Instead we got a badly paced, poorly written, depressing slog of a game that does not stand up to it's predecessor at all. Save your money. This game really isn't worth it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I actually played the game start to finish. I ignored all leaks, spoilers, youtube commentators, etc. and experienced it for myself and I loved the game.

That said. It is not a perfect game. Although I'm able to see past its flaws, a lot of people have not been able to and that's their opinion.

In the end, the majority of the hate this game is getting is from people who had a specific expectation and didn't get what they expected / wanted. Instead of being open to something different, they lose their mind.

I'm glad it's not a paint by numbers revenge story. I'm glad I was surprised while playing the game. I may not have liked every surprise, but when the entire experience was finished I was glad I played the game.

It's a great game. It's not perfect. People need to stop losing their minds over characters that they do not own. Joel does not belong to you.

This game is full of bigot sandwiches. Nobody want that. Game looks good, for what they want you to see. Super linear, boring story, ugly characters making decisions that don't make sense. And a really awkward rape/love sex scene that isn't appropriate for children. Sony is ok with that though.

Imagine having such a weak faith in your audience that the mere thought of them shooting the Star of David caused you to make them un-shootable.

The first game changed my life, made me wiser and a better person because it was written by gems but all those staff have been bullied and fired by this new team of pathetic worms who claim to be story writers. This is a complex and relatable story with no heroes. This way of storytelling with the dual narratives on display will alienate some fans of the game but that's not a bad thing. The biggest problem with Last of Us Part II is how it looses momentum and resets itself when the story shifts at a certain point. Not only is this section cover the same timespan of the main story, but it also resets the player to upgrade a character all over again.

If this segment of the story was appropriately woven in between the central plot, then it would be more reasonable to call it a 10/10 game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The story was brilliant in the last game but something has gone horribly wrong for this sequel, apart from shoe horning politics into this once loved franchise.
The game not only kills off a beloved character but in the manner it was done makes you question if the sequel was really made by the same company as the first game.
Joel the main character in the first game, is a person that hardly trusts anyone in the first game but in the second game he trusts the character that ends up killing him so easily, completely out of character.
Not only that but you are forced to play this character right after she kills Joel and with objective to kill the other main character from first game and to make things worse the game tries to make you like her by implying she is not really a bad person which totally does not work.
The game also has many plot holes as a result of such terrible writing and feels so rushed.
Well done naughty dog for ruining the franchise and your fans trust.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I really enjoyed playing this game, it forced you to realize that the people you kill in the game are much more than an enemy without feelings. It makes me sad that people are too upset over the death of Joel to see how refreshing it was to see the story from the other side. A concept that is rarely explored in games.
It was such a long time ago since i played the first game that I don't feel too bad about Joel dyeing or having to hurt Ellie whilst playing as Abby. So maybe that's why I didn't mind the story. But I also felt that Abby was just as justified in her actions as Joel and Ellie were. I guess I would have made the story a bit different myself but like I said, the change of perspective was really fun. That type of storytelling have a special place in my heart and I have a hard time agreeing with people who are too upset about Joel's death to see any positives in the story. I also feel as if they are missing the point of why Ellie didn't end up killing Abby. Just as we saw how every story has more than one side to it, so did Ellie. So in the end she couldn't justify Abby. And to me, that was the message of the game.
It was not as good as the first one but I definitely think it's worth playing.

The game is amazing, a masterpiece of the generation, every detail is surprising, the work done in this game is very well done, the story is sensational and very heavy q the first one, makes you understand the motivation of each character regardless of the side you are in be, the relationship of the characters makes you have attachment for them and the interaction is very captivating, the gameplay is not tiring and different from the first, the biggest problem is the infected ones, but the humans, the AIs communicate and give an immersive feeling in combat. The scenery is a work of art, everything has context, for example: if you have a corpse leaning against the wall and he has a letter saying that he killed himself, you can see the bullet hole in the head and the blood in the direction of the shot marked in the wall, it is more conducive to finding pills in bathrooms and parts in garages. The animations are incredibly well done, the reaction of the characters are very natural, the characters walk in different ways, in the cutscenes the characters "talk with gestures", they make gestures that they make the dialogue very natural and more realistic. Lastly, I want to say that it is very worthwhile to play, if you can buy it and if you can’t watch it, don’t believe the stupid reviews of those who do console war or who read the game spoiler and think you’ve got it, history makes you feel the motivation of the characters and is very immersive, PLAY or WATCH before coming to give a review about, be aware of what you are talking about. Good luck in your gameplay :D.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Lets start out with what this game does right: The world is beautiful and even the linear parts have several branches of paths the player can take making each person have their own experience. The killing of Joel, while brutal, really set in motion the story and while I was displeased it was not series ruining for me. The story had an amazing pace up until the end of Day 3, which is where my 10/10 review gets thrown out the window.

Now what the game gets wrong: We spent an entire game and DLC caring about the Ellie and Joel relationship only to be forced to play the person who ended it. The pacing at this point is whiplash worthy, the player went for the climax back to day 1 and forced to play as Abby. The entire "SJW" backlash on this part is just dumb, Lev being transgender probably has a total of 2 minutes of a 30hour game. Playing as Abby was not a rewarding experience, playing as Ellie I was collecting every collectible I could, but as Abby I found myself forcing my way through levels as fast as I could simply because she was not a relatable character. They tried to give her a redemption ark, and all along the way you hear about how much of a psychopathic murder machine she is, and the island sequence prove this even more. Abby is extremely selfish, I get that they were trying to make a foil to Joel, but the character was just not relatable at all. Now, the ending was one of the worst in history; there was no real resolution making the entire game pointless.

First half of the game 10/10
    Second half .1/10
    overall: 4/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Phenomenal visuals and graphics. Gameplay and combat vastly improved upon from the last game. Environments felt realistic and traversing them was satisfying, though I do wish there was another large open area like downtown Seattle. The story was a rollercoaster of emotions and left me thinking about the ending for days. Characters felt fleshed out, though I didn't always agree with the I did understand their motivations. By the end of the game I was so angry and disappointed with Ellie after throwing her life with Dina away to chase after meaningless revenge, though I'm glad she learned how to let go of her hate in the final moment. Hated Abby at first, loved her by the end and glad Lev has someone looking out for him (but maybe give us a Yara/Lev DLC please?). I understand why people are angry about Joel's death, I was too but let's not act like Abby and her friend's anger wasn't justified as well, from their perspective Joel killed their family and friends and the last hope of a cure that I will admit was always a longshot but something they truly believed in. Anyway, of you're a fan of the first game, if you're open to being challenged emotionally by a game, don't miss out on this.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'll try to make this as balanced as possible because I didn't hate the game but I also didn't like it. The visuals were great, the gameplay was similar to the first game, and I really enjoyed the inclusivity of LGBT+ characters. But then there's the plot. It felt forced and not thought out properly. Nor did I enjoy playing as Abby. I understand that we were supposed to feel something for her despite her wrongdoings but I just couldn't connect with her AT ALL. I absolutely understand Ellie's PTSD so heavily affecting her and I think the panic attack in the barn was AMAZINGLY well done but I don't think someone's trauma like that would make them leave their support system and family back home to hunt down a woman. The plot could have been so much better if they'd taken the time to not try and be so "edgy" with every decision they made. Stop trying to "trick" the player at every chance you get. You're crying WLF. I also don't think releasing this game with such a depressing, hopeless, and lonely ending was a very good idea during this pandemic. It's not what the world needed right now and I think that's the real reason it was delayed for a hot minute.
I also want to point out how the "themes" were very... childish. As if the creators are trying to teach us and overplayed moral lesson in a very bland and in your face kind of way. If they wanted to have a moral lesson, no one is going to listen if it's shoved down their throat instead of sneakily woven into the story. I would have given it's a 5 but not killing their queer characters bumped it up to a 6. I also really REALLY hated the sex scene between Abby and Owen. It made me feel all sorts of bad and grossed out and uncomfortable.

Let me start off with a disclaimer so that nobody can make any claims about fake bot posts. I'm going to be copy and pasting my review I left on Google. Now for the review

All of the backlash against this game giving it one star is absolute nonsense. I beat the game last night, and can genuinely say it's one of the greatest examples of mixing gameplay and storytelling I've ever seen. The entire point of this game is to put you into a situation where you spend hours building up a specific mindset and reinforcing those beliefs, and it then forces you to reassess them and really think "Sometimes things aren't always as black and white as they seem." Every single one-star review is someone who just feels the need to call Naughty Dog out for making them actually evaluate themselves as a person and acknowledge their faults. If you genuinely just didn't like the story of the game, that's fine. Not every story can please 100% of people. But the visuals are amazing, the environmental design is phenomenal, and the voice acting as absolutely top notch. Even if you say you personally hated the gameplay to it's very core and not a single aspect of it was enjoyable for you, the game had no major glitches, was incredibly well put together, was visually stunning, and the characters all felt real and like they genuinely believed in what they were doing. That makes this game worth no less than two stars (I would argue three personally, but I'm talking absolute lowest possible review score) because at the bare minimum it works well and looks and sounds great. The fact that it has almost no 4, 3, or 2 star reviews compared to the thousands of 5 and 1 stars should show you exactly what's going on here.

The game obviously isn't perfect. Nothing is. there were a couple of small bumps here and there, and anyone could cherry pick a handful of instances to argue against the compliments I gave the game. It's something like sixteen hours long, nothing can be absolutely perfect for sixteen hours with absolutely no flaws for anyone when it's being played across thousands of systems with billions of variations in the inputs leaving potential for something to throw an unexpected wrench into the gears of the game's internal formulas for what to do and when. But the fact remains that as a whole, this game is a major milestone in gaming and is something every game should aspire to be

The Last of Us Part II is a perfect argument of games as art. It uses the interactive media in which it's presented to make everything much more impactful than the story would be if it were just passively consumed. And to top it all off, it's one of my favorite games that I've ever played.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2 did not deserve such a rating from the players. People are crazy, they give marks without completing the game, supposedly there is LGBT in this game, I understand if Joel was gay, but Ally was a lesbian in the first part. Personally, I do not see LGBT in this game. As for Abby: In the prologue (where her father is alive) they show a non-pumped woman, it follows that she pumped up, because she was obsessed with revenge. Another fact: If the developers wanted to do LGBT, then they would not have made a love arch with Owen. And Dina is bisexual since she has a baby.
I really liked the game, even despite the MYSTERIOUS ending. My rating is 8/10

First off, there were way too many times where the gameplay just felt like a chore, making me not really want to sit down and continue playing. The story didn't captivate me enough for me to want to continue playing for long periods as I have with other games. There were some weird themes in there and some things that just felt unnecessary. I definitely did not care to play as Abby, I wanted her dead from the beginning and hated playing as her. I did feel bad for her though, when we saw Owen and Mel dead from her point of view. But again, nothing that intense. Overall, decent game, but not even close to as good as the first one. Would definitely not sit through and play it a second time Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A lot of the bad reviews are just mad people that didn't play the game. I played the game, and it's not about LGBT or SJW. The writing in this game is one of the worst writings in history, the character development, the situations, the editing, everything is just BAD, really BAD. The gameplay's ok, graphics are just amazing, animations are hands down the best in the market, but no one plays this game for that. The plot is just cheap, the characters are just dumb, they didn't respect the first game at all. The Abby story is just there for the sake of being there, she doesn't have something to say, they forced a purpose with the Scars, all the Hospital part to save someone she just met just to see her die after in a crappy cinematic, it's just sad, sad to see how the developer doesn't even care of what they made you go through just to kill a character that didn't even have to be saved in the beginning, it's just BAD, BAD. I was so disconnected with the main plot that I didn't even think the sniper was Tommy when it was so obvious, and it's the only time you connect something, and it's for nothing and has no sense, Manny being there, Tommy being there, you being there. Everything in this game happens because it needs to happen to move the plot forward. It's lazy, bad, and disrespectful. Expand

Admittedly, some may be pissed by some of the story arc and the fact that Abby was unnecessarily "de-sexualized" to appease PITA feminists like Anita Sarkeesian, but this does not negate how awesome the overall game is. Days Gone (another outstanding game) was unfairly bashed by professional critics for not catering to SJWs. Don't let an even better game suffer because of overblown SJW influence. It´s not what you expect. It´s not like Part 1. But it hits the same devastating emotional points that make you question your actions and consider differing viewpoints.
It does this by putting the player in a lot of uncomfortable positions, which is something not done often. If you like it or not should be judged after you´ve seen the last scene, because The Last of Us 2 is a package that presents itself in its whole being from the first second to literally the last.

Sisters arm is smashed to pieces with a hammer, sister is killed, he kills his own mother, a war destroys his home island, literally everyone wants to kill him as soon as they spot him, ...) Even in a post-apocalyptic world, I think that is quite something. Oh I see but this lovely "girl" Abby comes to his rescue. A glimpse of hope!
The only thing they skipped is that the child of Owens girlfriend is already 1 month old and Ellie slashes the babies head off. If you are in such a rage you cannot stop, can you? Maybe they left this for part 3.
But of course, its all for a good reason, the deep message behind it bla bla bla
For me this story is just trash. Revenge and too much violence is bad? I tell you something, I already guessed that before playing the game. And the political correctness, although I am not against it in general, is so over the top that it would ruin the story, if there would be a story.
They sacrificed everything that the players loved about part 1, maybe to satisfy Neil Druckmans ego? Who knows.
If this would be just another post-apocalyptic world with infected game, it would be ok (great graphics, great detailed design of the environment, story not so important) But a very disappointing sequel to TLOU.

As of right now, only 14% of people who own this game have completed it (per PSN achievement stats). That goes to show that people are just very upset about something that happens early on in the game. This story is going for realism. Bad things happen to people in real life. And you then get to see the consequences, whether you like them or not. This game is definitely not that similar to the predecessor, but why would you want a recycled story as the sequel? Once you finish the game, you will understand what they tried to do with the story. (I didn't mention game-play/graphics because no one has questioned them) Expand

Game of the generation. Excellent storytelling, graphics, and atmosphere. A revenge story with a meaningful message for our current world. You need to have an open mind, because it isn't a story you wanted after the first game, but it's a story the writers wanted to tell, and they were damn right.

Don't listen to these morons who got their panties in a bunch over a plot line they didn't like, if they even own the game to begin with! The graphics, gameplay, plot (so far) and sheer amount of things you can do is incredible. Do yourself a favor and try it yourself before listening to the trolls

Breathtaking storytelling. Amazing gameplay with accessibility beyond the first game. Exploring to an ever higher limit. I love this, and it is beyond expectation.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were moments in this game that were uplifting and moments of darkness. You have Jackson where the biggest drama is bar and snowball fights. To seattle where life is tenuous in a multitude of ways. You get an insight into the relationship between Joel and Ellie. Which although flawed gives hope. I really struggled with Abby initially but once the rose coloured specs come off there are parallels you can draw between her and Ellie except we can see Joel smiling when she saves herself by finally not following through something that would haunt her. Joel clearly cares about her welfare more than his own. Brilliant scene that shows this in the hotel even when tensions were taught between them. You can even see Abby haunted by killing joel as her story progresses. I really would like LOU3 to continue the theme, but back with Joel. I think there is much more of a story besides him losing his daughter that drives him to save Ellie. I also think the story of the brothers could be a strong one surrounding the fireflies and the estrangement.

Finally, I'm not sure what all the hate is about, its uncomfortable playing as Abby initially but it pays off IMHO.

Thanks for a great story and am looking forward to a second playthrough.

Graphics are insane, gameplay is on point, the story, especially the ending got me pissed off, but for any one who played through it all,Will know is about breaking the cycle of violence, its a masterpiece for me, reminds me of an old adage,he who lives by the sword, dies by the sword, something like that, so its a 10 all the way.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
