This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I wanted to like this game, I wanted to love this game so badly, but it's just not very good. It's not terrible, mind you, but it's not good either. Let's get the positives out of the way: combat is fine, it's basically the same as it was in TLoU 1. Graphically this game is stunning, it's amazing what the devs were capable of doing with the PS4.

With the positives out of the way, let's get into the negatives. The game feels less like a game and more like a movie simulator, and in a bad way. While it's not awful, it seems like some cutscenes just go on, and on, and never end. While the combat itself is fun, the way the game generally plays is...medicore at best, with long sections of nothing punctuated with combat encounters. And then there's the story. Oh, dear lord, the story.

There's so many plotholes, so many instances where characters survived wounds that would have killed characters in the first game. The concept of the story itself is fine, but it was executed so poorly that it destroys the game's value. Almost all of the new characters, if not all of them, that are introduced in this game die. Almost all of the old characters, and all of the old characters that most people care about (aside from Ellie) die. This game would have been like, a 6 or a 7/10 if it weren't for the absolutely awful ending. The story, literally, had no point. That's this game. You do everything, get to the end, and it's for nothing. Literally, and in the game's plot.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is absolutely the best video game I have ever played in my entire life. There is not even a close second. The only other game to be like it is the first. I judge this game as more than a simple video game, as I did the first one. I judge this overall as an engine for telling a fictional tale. They say you cannot judge a person until you walk in their shoes, and this game makes you walk, even in shoes you may not have wanted to. But even the original game did something to me that no other fictional outlet has ever done, it made me care about a fictional character more than I ever had in my entire life. Part of of that was the amazing story, the voice acting, graphics...the entire package was so realistic coupled again with the fact that it is a video game. You play as the characters you walk in their shoes.

Now on to the bad reviews. I spent some time reading through them, and it seems to me that so, SO many of them are written by people who did not play the game. I read specific gripes about story line or character flaws etc. They said oh the game did not do this or did not do that. I ask...did you play the game...because so many of the complaints I saw, the game absolutely went into. I heard so many people specifically bash the story...it was a masterpiece...

Spoilers: I understand why the first portion of the game made people mad. I understand that Joel's death was a very hard thing to experience. I myself had serious cognitive dissonance...he can't be dead. A big part of this was the previews that clearly lied. But that just added to my shock, and made it so much more powerful. Without going into every small detail of the story, even though I could, because every piece was amazing, but I will focus on the flashbacks with her and Joel. These flashbacks were masterful and changed the scale of the story each time they revealed one.

First they show Ellie and Joel as we knew them. That birthday scene definitely got to me after Joel was already dead. Then we see them out on patrol in another. People had asked did Ellie believe Joel at the end of the first game? Did she just pretend? I think this shows both. She loved Joel and wanted to trust him, but we see the weight of it on her. Then moving forward she goes and discovers the truth. This changes the story because now we see maybe there is regret on Ellie's part or guilt because she breaks from Joel. We see later this is even further when Joel stands up to the bigot. Ellie tells hi to piss off essentially. This is such an important scene. Ellie's motivations to the audience changes with each flashback. First their original relationship, we can see why Ellie wants revenge. But now their relationship is strained. The last night before Joel dies we see the pain on his face when Ellie tells him to go away. We see her face, she fell something to. She sees how much she just hurt Joel and we see her face show some hurt as a result. For the audience this changes her motivations completely....her carrying around this guilt that the last conversation she had with Joel was telling him to piss off. This changes her motivation, it is subtle but key. I will save the last flashback for the end.

First I have to jump into Abby. I understand some hate for her, I get it. I loved Joel too, she killed him very violently. But going through her story...as much as I hate to say it, I started to like her. People saying in complaints they could not relate to her or hated her, or that she was a sociopath? I just don't get it. We all agree that one of the things that made the original game so good was the ending. There was clear ambiguity there. Everyone agrees that what Joel did might not be right...but we see the one person, personally affected by it the most and people do not get her side? We follow Ellie's journey of revenge, but Abby has been festering those same emotions much longer than Ellie. There are many more details I can go into about Abby. I saw a full article defending her I agree with, but I will just skip to the end. of the game. The bottom line though, she really is not that bad of a person, she saved Ellie twice, even after Ellie killed all of her friends.

I saw so many people mad that Ellie did not kill Abby. As she id drowning Abby we see a flash of Joel playing a guitar. This does not make sense at first. Why would Ellie let her go. Then AFTER this we see the full context of the scene, which again changes everything in a subtle but very important way for Ellie. This scene is the keystone for the entire story in my opinion. We see that the very last conversation she had with Joel was about forgiveness. She tells Joel she does not know if she can forgive him but she wants to try. THAT is the exact memory she had when she decided to spare Abby. This is why this scene does make so much sense and why it was masterful writing.

Overall just an amazing game that grabs you emotionally and never lets go!

But the second one just leaves a bitter taste. Overall, I liked the game, but the story is just bad, I was literally screaming at my TV every time an Abby sequence ended and then... another one started, I came back for Ellie, not for some ox of a woman who I got to HATE in the opening hours of the game. Never have I hated a player character so much! There are a whole lot other flaws, but this was the main one for me. The worst part is that it tarnishes what the first game built upon, so it's been replaced as my all time favorite now. This is just sad. Expand

7 Years for the continuation of a great story, heartfelt, emotionally connected to the characters, stunning visuals.

The stunning visuals have continued, amazing, the voice acting and the sound, also amazing. The story and connection is gone. What a disappointment. This is definitely getting returned.

VISUALS:

Visually this is the best looking video game i have ever played, the the dark green tones when venturing through the Seattle ruins or the drenched wet downpour while going through the city are mind blowing, i lost count of the amount of times i had to stop and capture a screenshot.

Every spores particals in the air is crisp and detailed, the blood that spews from an enemy's neck when removing Ellie's switchblade is a thing of beauty, gory and uncomfortable but absolutely stunning .

    GAMEPLAY:

The gameplay is possibly the most organic feeling gameplay i have ever experienced, the movements and dodging through narrow gaps in walls are so seamless and incredibly satisfying, every stab or gunshot just feels perfect, how you can easily go from stabbing a guy, to then running full speed off a top floor balcony on to an unsuspecting enemy below and execute a devastating ariel kill.

To sum it up in bullet points the PROS far Outweigh the CONS

    PROS:
    -Sound
    -Gameplay
    -Visuals
    -World
    -Risky plot but done well

    CONS
-Poor pacing in some areas of the story

Neither should you have us sympathize with a serial killer who has no regrets and wouldn't mind killing pregnant people. Neil says it's "worth it" to play it for yourself, I suggest watching playthroughs of the game and then deciding on your own if it's worth your purchase. Apart from this, the company's horrible crunch time, and the creative director making fun of people who come forth about why they dislike this game, Naughtydog isn't the same company we all praised about anymore, and I don't plan on buying anymore titles from them in the future.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is primarily a story focused game which I find personally to be very hate inspiring.
The story is about revenge, with some absolutelty BRUTAL scenes, the mutilation of Joel by Abby with a golf clubpart of which is done infront of Ellie, Abby then also beats down on pregnant Dina before threatening to slit her throat... and after all this Ellie seeks revenge on Abby for all her brutality but ultimately... lets her go... completely dissatisfying.

The game FORCES you to do various things when playing as each character.
Ellie: you are forced to kill dogs, murder screaming, wailing people, and even kill a pregnant woman. Abby: you are FORCED to play with dogs, defend yourself against transphobic people, and save kids... this is all easy manipulation by naughty dog to encourage the player to show understanding and become sympathetic towards Abby and in turn start to dislike Ellie, but we're more intelligent than that, as when Ellie had to do questionable things she actually showed regret and remorse, but Abby on the other hand took immense pleasure in dishing out pain. This is NOT a likable character. Not to mention the sheer cheek of Naughty Dog forcing the player to play as Joel's murderer for a good portion of the game. As I stated before the Last of US Part II is a massively story driven game and this story... is a bad story. I will not give it a 0/10 as the graphics are stunning and the gameplay is much like the first installment, which I hold dear to my heart, but other than that this game was a major disappointment. So for this it gets a 3 out of 10.

Let devs tell the their storry, which is raw, sad, bealivible and emotional. Full of hate, loss and insight. The game has no heroes, no villains.

Not mentioning that acting, sound design, facial expresions of characters is excelent. Gameplay and enemy AI is also little better than in first game.

I udnerstand, why some people are angry but for me personally it is better than first game.

False adverting with the plot, Naughty dog completely disregarded what people liked about the first game and instead shoveled out this trash, On top of that the crunch time game dev's at Naughty dog had to experience is inhumane just to finish the game. Loved the first game tough ...

On the other hand the the story was underwhelming in many ways starting with..... SPOILERS.... The death of Joal and thats not all the its shuved down trhe throats of the audience that Ellie is gay and it also seems unnatural that the fold of Ellie (Abby) had abnormally large arms almost as if the studio made the decision to make her seem less feminine. Now i do understand that living in a post apoalyptic future isnt exactually going to make you look like a super model but the arms on Abby stood out like a sore thumb. This game is also very female centric with all the main male characters being killed off or just ignored. This doesnt seem like the best choice since the main audiance for this game is male teenagers who just wanna kill Zombies. When i say that the LGBTQ content was out of hand i mean that there was a sex scene of two females which was unnecessary and just used to fill time. That is why i rate it a four out of ten the story was crap and it doesnt quite make up for it with game play there were instances where i kept saying come on stop talking and just let me kill zombies. I only enjoyed it because the game play was kinda good and challenging but besides that it didnt live up to my expectations. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us: Part II is proof that video games can offer the most profound and insightful story experiences of any medium, a masterpiece of storytelling and gameplay.

The gameplay, music, performances, etc are all incredible and unforgettable. For this reason alone, the game is fantastic. But the reactions to the story have rocked me to my core. I believe no game has challenged the player to grapple with its themes and conflicts more than this game, which is primarily through its story.

I'll put it bluntly: Part II is a masterpiece of storytelling because of the very criticisms that people have about the game, not despite them.

In my opinion, people are upset that the game isn't what they expected, and are misconstruing change with a bad story. If the game were exactly like the first, then what is the point of making a sequel, especially as a sequel for a game with a nearly perfect ending? As I said, Part II is a masterpiece of storytelling because of the very criticisms that people have about the game. Since Ellie and Joel are the protagonists, we want them to be morally justified, we want them to live. Like Ellie, we begin the game traumatically watching Joel die, someone who we have waited years to reconnect with, and we are drawn into her quest for revenge.

Ellie's section is filled with stellar gameplay and touching flashbacks where she grapples with the realization of what Joel did in Salt Lake City. With each murder of Abby's friends, we watch her devolve into a monster, and it feels justified nearly the entire time. The scene in the Aquarium, when Ellie realizes Mel was pregnant, demands that we think about Ellie's actions. We then end on the major cliffhanger in the theater, and suddenly, we're Abby, a monster, a villain. Ellie's nearly guaranteed death hangs over us and haunts us.

But then Abby's section begins, and the game doesn't just humanize her and her motivations. The game demands that we empathize with her and that we question our assumptions about justice. Joel murdered Abby's dad, and thus Abby murdering Joel is completely justified if we use Ellie's quest as a standard, and probably moreso given that the game once again asks us to grapple with the moral dilemma of saving Ellie instead of producing the vaccine. Ellie grapples with this as well, feeling like her life would have had value if only she had died in the hospital. Having killed Joel, Abby is struggling and suffering, standing as proof that revenge cannot eliminate her trauma and bring her closure. We then see Ellie's journey in a completely new and upsetting light.

The game is not asking you to side with Abby or to consider her to be a good person, though you may. The game is using the characters as foils of each other to make a greater and incredibly clear statement about the cycle of violence. We learn to view Mel, Owen, Nora, etc as people who act in a very similar way to Ellie's friends. So who is right, who is wrong? Who will "win?" Who deserves to die, and what is the point of any of this? The game constantly forces you to consider and then reconsider its characters' actions in a way that is rarely seen. We grow and develop as Ellie and Abby do, which is stunning compared to other video games.

The feelings and thoughts going through my head as I reentered the theater, this time as Abby, are feelings that I have never felt in a game and can't put into words. As a player, I was rooting for Abby here, not hoping that she would kill Ellie, but that she would find her humanity and break the cycle of violence. I felt the same way with Ellie in Santa Barbara. The ending of the game, in which visions of the moment she began to forgive Joel are interlaced with her nearly killing Abby, proves to us that what Ellie needed was to come to terms with Joel's death and his decision to save her in Salt Lake City. Murdering Abby would not have helped, in the same way that murdering Joel did not help Abby cope with her own trauma.

I was worried about whether a sequel was justified to Part I. However, after playing Part II I've decided that the only reason that the story felt finished to us is because we didn't care about the people Joel senselessly murdered in Salt Lake City. We didn't care about Abby's dad. They weren't the protagonists, they weren't important, so the story ends with no loose ends. But Part II rejects these assumptions and goes above and beyond Part I's moral dilemma. Alongside stellar gameplay, performances, music, art, and environments, Part II demands questions of justice, revenge, identity, violence, grief, trauma, bias, and moral ambiguity in a stunning and unforgettable way. No game has ever demanded so much from the player, and Part II elevates video games to a peak that surpasses most movies and books. No game is perfect, but to call The Last of Us Part II anything short of a masterpiece is to criminally underrate it.

Characters were not relatable, there was nothing to invest in, it didnt 'say' or 'teach' me anything and the bleakness and violence were never really balanced out by any deeper messages about the human condition. The graphics were beautiful, the gameplay was fine but I found myself having to force myself through it, accompanied by characters I didnt know, couldnt relate to or were so removed from what initiually drew me to them that I may as well have been playing a brand new game not a sequal. I'm trying not to spoil anything here but all i can say is this is a game built on story and they tried something, it failed and fell rather flat. I dint enjoy it while playing but stuck with it waiting for some big emotional pay off that in the end never came and by the end had a nagging feeling that i would have been better off just doing something else. I don't care for any of these new characters but we are being forced to. That isn't good storytelling. If you played the first game and read all the tapes you knew the fireflies are going to murder Joel because he knows too much, in the second game he gets murdered in such a stupid way. It is implied that in the second part that Joel murders all the doctors when in fact you only have to murder one as the game forces you but what choice did Joel have when the Surgeon comes at him with a knife. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Theres only one thing that could've changed this entire game and that's choice, I can deal with joel being brutally murdered but to then force the player to just let it go in the end completely ruined the entire game for me. What was the point of the whole journey of revenge if you're not going to finish what you started. Now I understand what the devs were going for, a story about the cycle of revenge and in the end ellie breaks the cycle by forgiving Abby. However having spent an entire game previously playing as joel and to kill him off so early in part 2 and to just expect players to be ok with letting Abby go just because she saved a kid, no for me I wouldve drowned Abby given the choice and avenged joel. Then the ending wouldve made sense, Ellies in the house trying to play the guitar. But she cant because shes missing her fingers and so she leaves it behind, that would symbolize that she has avenged joel but at a cost and now it's time to move on. But nope this "dark" vengeance driven game has to have a happy ending where everyone but joel gets to live, oh and jessie doesnt but ah no one really cares about him . I would much rather have this whole game not happen rather than keeping Abby alive for what I can only assume will be a spin off game or sequel it's just such a shame naughty dog went in this direction with the story. The gameplay however is brutal, gritty and very tense and the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen but those amazing features cannot carry a game that's premise is storytelling and on that front in my opinion it has fallen short I love the representation of minorities in this game and the accessibility has to be commended but there is noticeable intrusions with this like how male characters will not open doors for you, you have to do it yourself they'll just wait by the door because god forbid if they opened the door for you. Also little things like when owen helps Abby up a ledge she pulls a face behind his back as if to represent she can do it herself she doesnt need his help, but when dina helps ellie up she says thanks and smiles just little things like that idk maybe I'm reading to much into that. To summarise looks great, plays great (although gets a little repetitive in places), however the story falls short because of its conclusion and if they had given a choice to players whether to kill or spare Abby it wouldve solved the whole issue because it plays to both sides but as someone who wanted to fully avenge joel I was not satisfied. There are maybe other solutions like structuring the sorry differently but still a sequel that delivers in every way apart from the story. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Graphically stunning and takes risks with storytelling that ultimately falls short of the first one. The combat system feels dated and lacking for a game this far into the PS4 lifecycle but ultimately feel familiar. The controversial moments in this game could have been done better. Joel dying had to happen to really justify a sequel but I wish it had been done in a clever way. Instead he along with Tommy just volunteered information about themselves. I think forcing players to play as Abby and fight a beloved character like Ellie was a mistake and could have been offered as a DLC. This is a story based game and the story feels out of sync. It could have been very enjoyable if some of the plot points made more sense based on logical character decision making. Not worth 60 bucks but worth picking up when the price drops. There is a lot of crying because it is long but something that is UNFORTONATELY necessary to give a complete immersion! show the TWO sides of the coin and make him feel sorry and remorse for the things he does as much as playing Ellie or Abby. it's just imagining yourself inside a zombie apocalypse and seeing how things worked, wondering why Ellie is so mad that Joel saved her life is really a stupidity without size worthy of people who just want to see female characters with breasts bouncing on the screen. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE EXACT 46,898 USERS THAT NEGATIVE THE GAME, YOU DEFINITELY DON'T TRULY KNOW WHAT IMMERSION MEANS

horrible story that tries to spread a "message" but just end up failing horribly, creating a awful experience that we have to suffer through hours

I want to say a few things before I dive into this. I'm a huge fan of TLOU and have liked a lot of games that have also come from the group at Naughty Dog. Look, I'm not a little fangirl gamer...graphics are great and all (and they are truly awesome in this game), but the story is where it's at. If you want a good looking game where the story doesn't matter, go pick up a dime-a-dozen shooter and play that. I expected a beautifully written game that was compelling and kept it's hooks in you the entire time (just like TLOU) and sadly, I feel that we received a pile of contrived B movie garbage instead. I'm not sure if the writers were too busy playing on their phones, sleeping or what, but the 'run of the mill' revenge story that has been played out for years, the plot holes that are large enough to park my can in and the meh/uninteresting characters are just too much for one game. I'm sorry, but in my opinion, the magic that existed in TLOU is gone and it'll probably never come back.

So I was kinda of out of it after they killed Joel's but overall I started to like it and then I was kinda disappointed after I found out I had to play as Abby but honestly the best parts of the game was playing as her not an amazing game but definitely not trash , replayable ? maybe .

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
