I loved the gameplay, bud hated the story, they made my favorite character into a **** of a woman even Abby was made a **** i hated the conclusion of the story and where it was going in the game. I hated the end story of the game, when your playing for hours with a character you hope on a good ending bud no ending like that.

The story is just plain bad, there's some good moments (Joel and Ellie flashbacks, especially the museum one) but the rest is just bad. Naughty Dog is capable of doing much better than this. Expand

Gameplay has seen some improvement from the first game but not too greatly. Addition of the rope and use of it to travel more vertical environments wasn't used more effectively. I was always pretty meh about the combat even for the first game, it served its purpose. The dodge did add some variety initially but it get a little repetitive, the lengthier playtime didn't help either. While the environments themselves look great, I felt let down by the lack of environmental puzzles. This was a gripe with the first game as well with how it kept using the ladders and garbage carts. ND has shown that they can do much better looking at their Uncharted series, so maybe it was a conscious decision to avoid being too similar or it wasn't a top priority for this game.

My biggest issue with the game sadly was the story and pacing. What drew me to TLoU has always been the story. This time I feel like they didn't do as good a job as fleshing out the new characters and the relationships. The first game featured a smaller cast of characters centered on the core characters Joel and Ellie. This really allowed us to grow closer to them throughout the game, and they were also supported by a cast of characters that I greatly enjoyed. This time I appreciate that they showcased a more diverse cast, but it also created some difficulty that with the time restraint most of the relationships were not able to be developed to the same extent. In the end I didn't feel much empathy for Abby or any of her friends, and Jesse and Dina were likeable but I needed more relationship development. All my favourite moments in the story were the ones between Joel and Ellie because it built upon an already existing and well developed relationship, while providing insight into the way it has grown and also strained over the course of the years. Their chemistry couldn't be beat by the rest. The new cast of characters had some potential but were not likeable or memorable enough.

It was interesting what ND tried to do in trying to make players think from different perspectives on our characters' actions and their consequences. It was a good attempt but was wanting in execution.

The way they tried to frame the story to push that Ellie was becoming the villain and that Abby had some good in her felt cheap and manipulative. In the way where when you are playing as Ellie they force you to kill dogs, murder a pregnant woman then when you play as Abby you play with the dog, save kids etc. (And then you rmb Abby tortures Joel to death with a golf club, and prob would have killed Dina who was pregnant if Lev wasn't there so welp) We can all see what you are trying to go for here but it came on too hamfisted. Even from the first game we knew Joel wasn't a good guy, and his final decision is controversial. But everyone could understand his motives because it was a very human decision that he made in the end. I could understand Abby's reason for wanting to kill Joel because it was a very human motive to want to avenge her father, but her character wasn't developed well enough for me to like her or be fully behind her. I will say though certain portions of the game if viewed as standalones disregarding the story surrounding it were very powerful and masterfully done in terms of atmosphere and execution.

Pacing wise the game was just too long. It felt really draggy at some parts and certain decisions on the way they cut the game was odd. It does seem like it goes again what was previously stated about not enough time being given to develop all the characters, relationships. Which is why to some extent I do feel like the main plot of this game should have been reserved for a third game, with the second more focused on introducing the new characters and maybe even introducing Ellie to them. It could have the potential to make us feel more conflicted on whose side we would be on had we the opportunity to grow closer with Abby's side.

This is kind of not related to the game but I have big issues with the way ND marketed the game after playing through it. I understand trying to hide major plot points of the game, other games and movies have also done this before. But tricking people into thinking Joel will be along with you for the journey, or basically hiding the existence of a second main character is like taking subterfuge to a whole nother level. I would even say it is basically false advertising.

TL;DR Technically amazing, lots of respect to the countless people who worked on this game. Improvements on game play were there but not too big. Dragged down greatly by the story that didn't live up to the first game. Story can be a downfall for a game, especially this franchise that was built upon having a great story in the first place. I will say that my scoring decision had a heavier weightage towards story because of this.

Unfortunately I can not sing the same praises to the story. Simply put, it just didn't work for me. in a vacuum the story and themes are competent but as a long awaited sequel to one of the greatest games ever made (in my humble opinion) this is easily the single most disappointing game i've ever played. Even without the context of the original, the game's over reliance on flashbacks destroys the pacing with brief 30 minute interruptions at best and at worst, forcing the player to trek through 10 hours of gameplay before resolving a cliffhanger. Naughty Dog took a risk with this game which I respect but don't necessarily agree with. In all, while the game is undeniably a technical masterpiece, the story just feels inconsistent with the characters and themes of the first. Expand

Last of Us was excellent at its time. Last of Us Part 2 was a disappointment. Joe getting killed off in chapter 1 even after saving abbys life is just stupid. The game was watchable till the fight between Elli + Abby. The 2nd half of the game I didn't even care to watch and so I skipped through it within 2-3 minutes. Abby is the "enemy" uninteresting 'ugly' character. I don't envy any PlayStation player who had to play through 2nd half of the game. 5/10 as the first half of the game was watchable even there were flaws included like that everything happens in one place/town. The combat was greatly improved and also loved the fact that there was more workbenches ahah
However the story was a big **** mess!
Killing off the main character early on in the game by some hulk of a woman who’s dad was some random npc in the first one.
Making you play as the **** for half of the game to try and sympathise with her and learn her story (doesn’t change my mind, still hate the ****)
Making Ellie seem like the villain (also makes you kill dogs while Abby plays fetch and can pet them) Kills off Jesse and somehow overpowers Tommy? Logic
Also Ellie lets her magically go off into the sunset with lev (who is cool) and Ellie loses everything!!!
It just doesn’t make a good story, the first was a masterpiece and this just destroys it!!
Even the trailers were misleading by showing Joel in scene’s when he is blatantly dead by then.
    Urghhh.

The only thing better than Part 1 is the upgraded graphics and combat but unfortunately the story is dreadful and poorly written and for a single player only game it falls short of any GOTY awards for this matter alone. I felt that this game did a lot wrong, but also did a lot right, the game play felt fun through most of the segments, the levels were interesting and in my opinion dynamic, however, one of the major problems with the game is by far the ending, a lot of people complain about the beginning of the game(which is justified in some aspects) but the worst damage is done by the ending. Before the ending of the game, i could really see myself coming back to play through again on new game plus but by the time i made it past the last segment with the new enemy faction and that miserable ending, i felt like going back to play this game would be a waste of time especially with the lackluster ending that makes you wonder why you decided to play the game in the first place. The pacing of the game was not very good either, felt very stagnant at times, like the game just stopped progressing. The ending was very depressing and disappointing as well. The gameplay could have been better. Felt like no matter what I did to be stealthy I would be forced into a situation of being seen or would be seen while hiding. So stealth was not very good which I personally enjoy the most in games like this. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I first want to say this, I am not homophobic. But y’all seriously needed to chill on the agenda thing. Naughty Dog, you Practically destroyed all the male characters, and not because they’re male, but because we’ve, as a community, have come to know and love these people; Cough cough- JOEL AND TOMMY oh and Glen from TWD. And then we get to see Abby, whose ridiculously huge, and I say this is ridiculous not because there’s anything wrong with a buff woman, but because IN THE MIDDLE OF AN APOCALYPSE YOU HAVE A WOMAN WHOSE BUILT LIKE A TRAIN. Doesn’t make sense. How is she this huge? What, does she have a stash of steroids or something? Kinda silly if you think about it. It’s just forced. The whole girl power thing is just forced and people hate it..because it cost our beloved characters to get the boot. Idc what agenda you put in a game as long as it works and your not shoving it down my throat. In reality nobody cares. People play games to escape reality. And look....all great heroes have an end, I don’t mind Joel dying, it’s the way you killed him you fool. Neil, man...you told us back in 2016 that the main focus of this game was JOEL AND ELLIE. You lied and decided to bring She-Hulk into the mix. And then you’re gonna try to play with our emotions, trying to make us feel sorry for this chick after what she did, and what she continues to do throughout the story. I’m sorry but a lot of us don’t have enough empathy for her, even after we find out the plot twist. That’s just my story review. However is the story-telling bad? No. It’s not a bad story. It works. But for a hardcore Last of Us fan, it’s not gonna pass. You literally took away the heart and soul of the game. For a newcomer however, they’d most likely like the game. Gameplay as always is AMAZING, that’s really the only thing I reallyyyyt love. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Where to start. I guess to give my opinion on the whole "killing characters" controversy. Having Joel die is fine, honestly. The writers clearly wanted to have that as the main driving point of the story and for the spotlight to be on Ellie rather than Joel.

The story-telling as a whole was poorly structured. I liked the flashbacks of moments that have relevance in character development. Although I feel like there should have been more mystery. Maybe not open with the previous game's main character dying. Like I said, it's fine he did, but maybe give the players a moment to get back into the game, the story, the franchise and reconnect with the characters. That way, the death would have made much more impact on the audience.

Okay. Onto the worst part - Abby. Just... why? Why the **** do we play as the main antagonist? Half the game was spent playing as her and I hated every single moment of it. Remove her parts, and you've got a pretty good (but still not great) game.

Keeping on the Abby subject but also going back to the story's structure, if you want us to care about a newly introduced character, maybe develop their character BEFORE you show their bad side? It's clear they wanted us to care about her otherwise we wouldn't have seen so much of her personal relationships, such as that with Owen.

If anything, they should have made us play Abby's parts either before Ellie's parts, or play each character day by day. Playing as Abby and having radio calls about an event you later play through as Ellie would have been really interesting. Also, don't leave us on a ****ing cliffhanger with Abby finding Ellie, Dina, Tommy and Jesse at the theater to then play the second half of the game. When that happened I was so ****ing frustrated and just wanted to know what happens. If they brought both character's story-lines to that point simultaneously - that would've been great. I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of players stopped playing when it got to Abby's half of the game. The only thing driving me through her parts was wanting to know what happens, I didn't give a **** what was actually happening DURING Abby's parts.

The gameplay overall was fine. It kept to the tried and true gameplay of the first game. I appreciated the fact they didn't try to change the formula to something completely unrecognisable from the first game.

The graphics and environments were incredible.

Overall, fine game. Enjoyable for half of it, emotional ending (though not as emotional as the ending of the first). I feel like they could have done a much better job with the story they had if they just structured it a bit better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Unfortunately, TLOU2 is a flawed game, with some questionable decisions in story telling, pacing and direction. However, it is worth playing, and from a pure technical and gameplay perspective, quite stunning.

I'll start first on the technical side of things, which is where this game truly shines. In this respect, TLOU2 is a masterpiece. Graphically, the game is gorgeous, one of the best looking PS4 games to date, and certainly a stunning way to cap of the PS4's end of life. The environments are richly detailed, from Jackson's winter snow covered climate, Seattle's rain soaked depressing atmosphere and Santa Barbara's hot, dry heat. The PS4 Pro was able to render them all with great clarity and stunning lighting at 1440p. As a PC gamer predominantly, the 30fps was annoying, as was the controller, however, I think these annoyances can be overlooked - although I would love the series to come to PC one day.

While it suffered in some areas from drops under 30fps (mostly interactive water environs), for the most part it was completely playable. The Temporal Anti-Aliasing, nice film grain, filmic colour grading and beautiful lighting (using pre-baked and indirect lighting effects), especially the global illumination lighting effects, simulating colour bleeding from light on different materials (which was impressively implemented) brought the game and the richly cluttered and living environments to life. The environments ranged from quite large open areas like the large Seattle map, to more guided closed areas in the later game. I don't think an open world design would have been of benefit for this title, and was best served with map design seen in game.

The story however is quite clearly an area which has received some very critical reception, and rightly so. While I didn't hate the story, in fact I enjoyed some parts of it, I didn't like it either. It is for the most part a story of revenge, and very little else, there is nothing original here. There are moments of redemption and clarity of thought for the characters, but in the end, it was an eye for an eye revenge adventure plot that did not succeed, leaving the player empty, angry and wondering what was it all for. Maybe that was the point of the story? If so, it's not appreciated. The game is undeniably bleak and hard to enjoy in many parts, which is a shame, given that TLOU1 was such a fantastic game with a brilliant story. Forcing the player to play from the viewpoint of the "antagonist" for essentially the entire last half of the game was clearly an attempt to try and show to the player how perceptions and points of view are never truly what they seem, nor a persons intentions - for Abby it was about justice, for Ellie it was about vengeance.

There were some really great parts to the story, the best being the flashbacks to Joel and Ellie's moments in the past, both good and bad and their journey from close bond, shattered relationship and eventual renewal - although this never came to pass given the story events. These good moments were few and far between though. When we get to know Abby, she is not quite the evil murderer that she is initially portrayed to be, and much like Ellie, a product of her surroundings and history, that fact is established at the start. This does not absolve her of her actions though - Abby's justice was directed solely at Joel, while Ellie's revenge was directed at everything to do with the WLF, purely by association with Abby. In the end, Ellie evolved into a worse person than Abby, destroying her character. Abby's initial introduction into the game with her hate filled and violent introduction as she beats Joel to death for the murder of her father did not lend her to being an easy character to either play as or to empathize with. There is much more to say, but not really enough space. To sum it up, the story is flawed, imperfect and hard to digest, but ultimately, still worth experiencing.

The gameplay is much like any other Naughty Dog title with survival elements, scrounging for supplies etc. It's fun, and a refinement on previous titles. While it's nothing groundbreaking, it does the job well. However, some elements like restrictions on ammunition amount make little sense. As a PC gamer, the camera felt overly claustrophobic, which is something that console titles have always had an issue with. But apart from small issues like those, it was still fun from a gameplay perspective.

Over all, I'd rate TLOU2 a 5 out of 10. This game is by no means perfect like most of the mainstream gaming media portray. It's most glaring issues are those involving story and the essential destruction (deconstruction?) of those characters we came to love in the original game. That is not easily overlooked. However from a clear technical point of view, the game is stunning, richly rendered and always looks beautiful. EDIT: Changed from 7 to 5, in light of actions by Sony and ND and their doubling down on stupid.

The game is really well made with great graphics, sound and gameplay.

The main problem unfortunately is the biggest part of a game like this, the story. Firstly the characters are all pretty terrible and unlikeable, the worst is Abby and the game makes you play as her far too often and for too long. I mean you are playing as a character that you don't actually want to succeed, if the game actually let me kill her and skip all her parts (of course that can't happen) I would of enjoyed it a lot more as it was a chore to play as her. I know why the writers made as play as her so we could see that "just because you are bad guy doesn't mean you are bad guy" and that actions have consequences. She does at least have a character development arc unlike Ellie and is almost likeable at the end. Secondly the story is too long and didn't know when to end, it could and should of ended at the farm sunset scene. Would of probably given it a 7 if it had ended then. Lastly the story doesn't make sense (character motivations don't make any sense) and isn't enjoyable as it's just too dark and doesn't have any pay off at the end. You really have to wonder how it got point of being made, kind of like the last season of Game of Thrones. The world of the Last of Us is so interesting and has so much potential and it was all wasted, the mini stories in the collectibles were more interesting than the main story.

Overall I would say don't buy this game unless it's on sale for about £15 and you really want to see what the fuss is about.

Good gameplay with poor storytelling/underdeveloped characters. Over half of the game is flashbacks which destroys the pacing of what could have been intense moments. Much of the character decisions don't make any sense, and are just used to move the sub-par story forward

This game is one of the best I have ever played. It is unrelenting and makes you stop and ask yourself what you have just done. Brutal! I have never felt so emotionally invested in a game which may be why people are having a hard time accepting it but they need to realize it is a story. Told in a linear way and was done amazingly.

Disappointing. While I think it is tough to follow up the first Last Of Us game (one of the best games I have ever played), they missed the mark. I didn't want Joel to die but if you make that happen, you should not put it at the start of the game. The pacing is poor and the story isn't necessary. Abby's story is actually okay, but it drags out forever and you should've had to play it before you know she kills Joel because the entire time you just want her to die. Nobody in this story is in the right, but you root for Ellie and Joel because of the first game. Parts of it felt very unnecessary. I couldn't form a real opinion on Jesse and Dina, because you barely get to know anything about their characters. As for the ending: this really made me disappointed. I think the game saves some grace with me if it ends with Ellie and Dina and the baby, and mix in a flashback like the one the game finished with. Instead, she leaves the life and family she has and goes off to kill Abby and when Ellie gets there, she doesn't even kill Abby. One thing that bothers me about games is when they lose the player with the timeline. I like flashbacks, but I was left with many questions. How long was Joel and Ellie in Jackson before Seattle? How did Ellie and Dina find a way to survive after Seattle? Did they go directly back to Jackson presumably? How long did they stay there? How long were they living in the house at the end of the game? How long was Ellie gone? What happened to Dina and the baby? I wish the game has a DLC (it probably wont) to maybe fix some of the plot holes, but I doubt it. I would really prefer if they didn't make a third game to try and correct it, but they probably will. They should leave it as it is- A fantastic first game, and a very, very disappointing sequel. Expand

I waited 7 years for this! What a disappointment.

Now, the graphics were a solid 9/10. The gameplay was more of 8/10 for me. It was fun for sure but unfortunely, there was nothing innovative in part 2 and the fighting does get repetitive. But the story, uff..... 2/10. It was brave what Druckmann & co. tried to do, but it didn't work. I don't mind the death of a certain character,

It was brave what Druckmann & co. tried to do, but it didn't work. I don't mind the death of a certain character, but my problem was how and when it happened. It was out of character and felt rushed. And the Abby story? My gosh, I really couldn't care less about Abby and her friends and just wanted to run through her story as fast as possible. At one point they showed a friend of hers in a body bag, and we were supposed to feel sad or shocked he was dead. But honestly, I had no clue who the dude was. That's how little character development these guys got.

Dina and Ellie were definitely cute together, I just wished the built up Dina's character and her relationship to Ellie more because until the farm with JJ, they had very little chemistry.

Oh and the Abby and Owen scene (you know which one I'm talking about) was pure cringe.

All in all, this game is a 5. Bec the story is way more important to me than graphics and gameplay in a game like this, it will also weigh in heavier.

I think I would have been happier with Ellie and Joel's story if LoU2 never happened.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Look, ultimately I found this game to be disappointing. I know, the people that gave this game a 10/10 are going to dog on me and other people like me. People can be disappointed with a product and leave a negative or mixed review, just because they are bringing up valid criticism towards your game does not mean they are trolls or crybabies, they are just looking at the game through a different critical eye than what you are. For me, the story was the biggest let down. The new characters for the most part didn't land with me, and the ones that did are killed off and quickly forgotten, like they never even existed. Leading up to this game there was false advertising on the content of the game and the story, and obviously there's going to be backlash from that. On top of that if you brag about how you intended for your game to be divisive i think you forfeit your right to complain about half your audience not liking your game. This game literally takes the "revenge is bad" storyline and beats you over the head with it over and over again. Gamers are smarter than that, we know "revenge=bad"....we didn't wait 7 years for that. Correction, revenge is bad unless you're Abby. Abby gets her revenge and in my eyes gets away with it. Ellie loses EVERYTHING. It is also blatantly obvious that they go out of their way to force you to like Abby (Hey, look at how Abby plays with dogs, wow such a great person!). Finally, Metacritic, if you are going to be deleting negative or mixed reviews on your website that are clean genuine reviews then please do likewise with the 10/10 reviews that are either clearly copied/pasted, or are clearly made by bots. Otherwise you are just aiding in the score of this game being artificially inflated. However, I don't think you will do anything, as we all know that is a one way street, they will delete only the fake/suspect reviews that are negative (even just outright deleting legitimate negative reviews), but they will leave the fake 10/10 reviews alone. That is how it works. This game IS NOT a 10/10. It is also not a 0/10. Even though I believe this game is a 5/10, realistically it is probably around a 6/10 or a 7/10, at its absolute highest 8/10...but anymore than that and you're just pretending, I'm sorry. Expand

You must play this game with an open mind for being a story about lost and finding one self. It isn’t about the revenge story, as it’s more about different perspectives and that understanding them will sympathize you with the story. It’s about how Elle never found her reason to move on and live after the results of the first game. Certain character’s actions causes these terrible consequences and If you choose to not understand then because you don’t like certain elements then you are on a blind path just like Elle was. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have tried my absolute best to like this game. But despite excellent gameplay and graphics, the story just doesn’t work. I spent 30 plus hours lying to myself that by the end, it would all make sense. And everything would come together. However all I was left with was a confused mess, that tries far to hard to be shocking and edgy. It’s all over the place with different characters and time periods. There’s a complete lack of momentum. Old characters are handled badly. And new characters are wasted, due to how they are introduced and set up. To add icing onto the cake... the entire story is kind of pointless. Nothing is resolved, and everyone has just had the worst time. The story is a real shame. The graphics and gameplay are solid. It’s a well made game, that had limitless potential. Unfortunately, although I appreciate naughty dog’s ambition with the plot. It just didn’t work. It’s so bad, that it spoils the game.

I have just completed the game, and I feel exactly how I felt after watching the last Jedi. I didn’t hate it... but I kind of wish it had never happened.

Naughty dog, A for effort, but D for outcome. Please take onboard fans criticism instead of insisting we didn’t get the game. We did... we appreciate what you tried to do. But it didn’t work. Things that would have helped the story.
    1. I have no issue with dying dying, but he should have had a better exit. Make it so that Abby refuses to help him up during an escape from the infected after learning who he is. Then being conflicted with her decision afterwards. And so the revenge part makes sense. Have Ellie be there. Have Abby then push Ellie down. And Joel dies saving Ellie one last time. Even have it so Ellie has to kill Joel before he turns. This would add so much more to the end of the first game. Ellie loses Joel to an infection she was supposed to cure. If Ellie needs more of a reason to revenge on Abby. Have Abby also release infected into Jackson, to aid her escape. Dooming hundreds.
    2. Abby had potential. But you needed to make us bond with her before she killed Joel. Personally I liked her gameplay. Had she been in a different game unrelated from this mess of a plot. I would have given her a chance. 3. Have a decent twist. Make it so Abby is also immune. Her dad knew this all along... but couldn’t go through with it. So started using/finding other people with forms of immunity, so he didn’t have to kill her. Have Abby find this out during her segment (so her play through has a point, and doesn’t drag). With her eventually realising that her father and Joel weren’t so different. 4. Have her and Ellie have more screen time out of beating the hell out of each other. So they can understand each other’s side of the story. This way, it actually makes sense why one lets the other go. They can even bond over their immunity. This game is not awful. But it’s certainly not good. And it has the potential to be fantastic with some revision to the story. This can all be done whilst keeping the basic bones of the story. And it would drive home the intended message, far better than the over the top nonsense it is now.

The Gameplay Mechanics were great, Visuals were amazing and the Soundtrack was nice. That's pretty much the only positives I have.

The Pacing is slow, Story is quite poor, some of the characters deaths were poorly done and some characters are poorly written.

This game could've been a lot better even with the same story by doing a couple of things differently.

Did not enjoy playing as Abby, As soon as the characters switched from Ellie to Abby after the Cinema scene, The game got extremely boring. I really didn't care about her story or her friends. I also didn't find her or her friends story sad either, Especially Mel. That's actually one of the reasons I made the score a 5/10. It would've been a 6/10 if we played less as Abby.

I would've loved to have traveled with Tommy more or maybe travelled with him instead of Dina. I think that would've made the game much better.

The ending I would say wasn't bad but it wasn't good. I still would've preferred to kill Abby. That's what we spent the whole game doing.

That's about it, 5/10 for me. Wasn't a bad game, Wasn't good. I was actually enjoyiing playing as Ellie right until we had to play as Abby. The game was all about joel and ellie interaction and we get joel killed at the beginning, which could happen in an apocalypse and after all the enemies he managed to get. But making us half the game play as a character which is hated by the vast majority of players who played tlou part 1, is just nonsense. There were a lot of decisions that could have been much better, this is a game that makes you feel out of character and like you don't even care anymore about what is going to happen in many parts of the game, and that, in a game that got most of its praise because of its amazing story, makes me think that this game was poorly written and badly executed.

If you were comparing the two games, this one completely misses the mark story wise. Yes there were some great flashback moments at the museum but that’s where the good parts end.

I feel they could have left Ellie and Joel’s story alone. There are tons of story arcs to explore. I had a more enjoyable time reading the notes from artifacts that I found.

I would have preferred them make up characters and develop them rather than this half-baked story we got

Ellie’s revenge story is so bad it’s comical.
That’s it, she’s hell bent on revenge at any cost. No character development

And Joel said "it's best not to think about that." This game makes you think about it whether you like it or not - I liked that part. The feeling of you feel like crap, I liked that.

I hated Dina and Ellie's relationship, which makes up a majority of the game, to where when Ellie leaves her at the theater I was relieved because it felt forced to promote SJW stuff when it could have been handled like Drake and Elena's relationship where it was funny and smart and sweet and great despite their circumstances, but they didn't want that and wanted to go straight for the "if you don't like this relationship than you're a homophobe" type of writing (which is called lazy writing). I actually liked Abby more than Ellie, oh my word. I haven't finished it ven after hearing the leaks and listening to the backlash and all of that. Alot of the hate is out of context because of the leaks and rumors (Abby is trans, homophobic Christian cult), but some of the hate is legitimate (character motivation, and the lost of the character).

The ending completely through me off from what could have been a good game, my final score is 5/10 because of the atrocious ending that ruined it. Ultimately, the graphics were great, music and sound 2was fantastic, but the story had pacing issues and an absolutely terrible ending.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is far from a 10. Just finished it. I'm a graphics whore so I loved the global illumination technique used. It made a present gen game look almost new gen. Almost, because there were clear limitations shown by the aging hardware. Those limitations alone make it not a 10. You can't just go throwing 10's at games when there are clear flaws. There is no such thing as a perfect game and therefore no one should be slapping perfect scores on any game, ever.

It's one of the best looking games ever made but it still had LOTS of geometry, texture and shadow LOD issues, various glitches, some PS2 quality textures in places not off the beaten path, some places where the baked GI was clearly not present, some frame rate issues on the Pro, a few 'zbuffer' issues, etc.. I've recorded short vids of a lot of this stuff, and a few screenies. The animation was amazing, loved their new animation system and hope that other devs catch onto it. I went to play Spiderman shortly after beating the game and the animation in that game now looks so flawed to me in comparison. ND has the best artists.

The story… Too many contrived elements. I didn't have a problem with most of the story but treating some of the characters the way they did was unnecessary. This is a video game, therefore it isn't going to win any academy awards. Some sjw stuff was just unnecessarily shoved in my face which I didn't appreciate. The mushy, kissy kissy, lovey dove stuff went too far between E and D, like it was only there for the sake of pushing an agenda. If I had only seen it 2 or 3 times I wouldn't have thought anything of it. But then there were also the hairy armpits.. really? And not just once... Don't push that stuff in my face in a video game. It was almost as if someone high up on the team had a certain fetish.. If you want to argue realism, then you can certainly argue that Abby was a complete caricature because there is no way she could have looked like that without roids, and that isn't at all realistic in a post apocalyptic world. But it's there. So Abby had access to roids, but didn't have access to a razor? Can't argue that she's a dike because she isn't. Dina's a dike so I let that one go. If you look at young Abby she was not a bulky or stocky girl. She couldn't have obtained that look without roids. The look she had after the encounter with Ellie and Tommy, sure, that's possible.

None of the characters in this game really stood out or were likeable. I just wanted Ellie and Dina both to get murdered somehow pretty early on. Crap characters, forced and way over done romance elements. I was so burnt out on this game by the time I finished Ellie's story, then I had sooooo much more to go than I realized. This game was way, way too long for the type of game it is. It just wasn't fun anymore after a certain point and I was just anxious to get it over with, staying up late trying to force it sooner rather than later. That's never a good sign of a decent game. Overall I'd give this game a 6/10. It isn't nearly as good as the first one and I'm so burnt out on it that I don't even want to go back to the first game to finish a new playthrough I started a few weeks ago. This game should have been split up into two games. Even then, they would both have been quite long if you explored and collected. I don't even think I'd want to see a third one.

ND is much better at making Uncharted games. I'm now convinced that they just got really lucky with the first game and things just fell into place. Use this great engine and even better GI and visuals for a new Uncharted game. Heck, Nate can even bring his daughter as a sidekick since Sony loves sidekicks so much. Or give us an earlier story that we've never been told, maybe between UC2 and 3, or 3 and 4.

I feel like the story had many directions it could’ve went but it just wasn’t the main concern as you can tell with the lazy writing. It took 7 years just for naughty dog to mess up an extraordinary new IP. There was no point to Joel death because in the end there was no revenge...so after I finished the game I felt very empty. I didn’t understand the moral of the story if there was one. The amazing graphics and gameplay quality can’t save such a dry story concept. Oh & it was very gay. Expand

First, they showed us an ideal life where we were all excited to embrace the sequel and then allowed a zombie writing staff to infect the franchise by sticking its teeth into the arm of the fans via a golf club. However, even after this, I held hope we'd tie off the arm, chop it off, and be able to move on into a new story. What I got instead was a game where the infection spread so much that by mid-game I was playing a character who was an undead version of the protagonist and time-hopping like I was Doctor Who. They tried to make me care with every trick in the book but it couldn't stop it from feeling like I was in a failed marriage. All the joy was gone and all that was left with was an obligation to see it through since I already made the 59.99 commitment. Like I never thought a game would need a Synder cut much less something from Naughty Dog but seriously had they let you played it chronologically & mad a few revisions this could be an 8.5. Alas since the game felt so miserable I can only award it half the points for its graphics and the few parts I liked. I strongly recommend they review their prior titles to relearn what made them great. Things like filling the player with some sense of enjoyment other than just revenge porn & angsty guitar solos. Personally right after playing Last of Us 2 I replayed Uncharted 4 as a sort of cleanse and I'll say it still holds up so I'm confident you guys can do better next time. Just please keep the player in mind and remember to make it about being fun and not whatever else you're doing in the writer's room to intentionally disappoint *cough*, I mean subvert expectations. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I liked the gameplay and loved the graphics and the attention to detail in the environment; props to the developmental team for those.

The story though. The story left a lot to be desired, with inconsistencies, Battle of Winterfell level plot armor, and just some bad writing in general. I was okay with the twist and Joel's death at first, even though the false advertising is kind of infuriating. Ellie's 3 days in Seattle; I loved. I stayed away from the leaks and went into the game blind and throughout those 3 days I was thinking, hey, why do people not like this? It's great!

And then came the part which totally turned the game on it's head for me. The ~10 hours playing as Abby. The entire game depends on whether you like and sympathize with Abby or not, and I personally did not. I couldn't care less about her friends, and didn't even flinch on seeing them die one by one. So many WLF characters introduced, literally none of them resonated with me. I mean I don't even remember half of their names, that's how little I cared about them. Probably the only emotion I showed was doing a little celebratory cheer when Tommy shot Manny. That was nice.

As the game went on, my dislike for Abby increased. I mean it's hard to like someone who takes joy in torture (Joel, the captured Seraphites at the WLF compound she wanted a few moments with) and sleeps with their pregnant friend's boyfriend. Yeah, definitely not endearing. For others like me who didn't like her, the 10 hours playing as her would have been absolutely torturous. I considered dropping the game around halfway through them. No one wants to play that long with an MC they hate.

And then the ending. By the time it rolled around I was already extremely disappointed with and tired of the game, and it did nothing to change my emotions. Probably made my opinion of the game worse, if anything.

Looking back on it, I cannot be more disappointed with the game that Naughty Dog put out. As a standalone, sure, it'd be a great game. But as a sequel to The Last of Us? Pretty bad. If they were insistent on putting Abby's part of the story across, there would have been much better ways to go about it.

You don't achieve this outcome by behaving arrogantly and patronising your audience, by indulging yourself in sadistic little tricks at their expense, or by betraying the very people who have afforded you the opportunity to make a sequel based on their loyalty to the original.
I purposely avoided social media as much as I could on the run up to release, to allow myself the opportunity to play this game without falling prey to leaks or reading any reviews, subsequently avoiding the initial controversy. Therefore my opinion has been formed purely by the experience of playing this game and the first. That fact that I am focusing on the story and the gameplay choices made by the creators, instead of lauding the action and incredible environments, tells you everything you need to know about this game. The narcissism and folly of the authors undermine all of the aspects that were good and will forever sully the Last of Us legacy.

Sadly the best comparison to the Last of us part II I can make is the last season of Game of Thrones. You know the people in it, it still looks beautiful and you can see the effort and hard work gone into it, but it feels wrong. It's not that I hate the story, it's that it is not character driven anymore but plot/theme driven. It is driving home a point with a viciousness that seems to ignore its own origins. I think the most heartbreaking thing is when the game has moments that are genuinely beautiful and well written that shows the potential this game had and the talent behind it. Again, like GoT it's not that the story itself is bad, it's the execution that is the problem, it's about believability. The idea for the plot was controversial and bold, that however raises the stakes on how to execute it - where it falls short in my opinion.
Another personal pet peeve is trans representation, this is no criticism of including trans characters in stories, but how. it seems that not enough thought was put into sensitivity reading of the plot when a trans character is repeatedly deadnamed not to mention the emotional suffering said character has to go to for being trans. I also wondered why include a trans character in a game that is essentially about the circle of violence to begin with. It does seem a little like just checking the box "has trans representation" without any deeper thought about how that representation is executed.

The Tlou2 doesnt hold true to the main character: Joel. Yea he just saves this random girl from being clicker bait with Tommy and brought her back to her friends and gives out their names but he also knows how notorious he is when he’s done a lot of **** after the breakout. After being saved from the man who killed her father she needs to kill him. Understandable I suppose but thats not how you kill a main and beloved character and in the very beginning of the game. Later as we play as Abby she saves 2 kids because they saved her. Where was the same even slight compassion for Joel? The lies and false advertising is another thing apparently Joel was still supposed to be alive. All I’m saying is this story could’ve gone a different way if they didnt force feed Abby down our throats to make her like-able. I get her side of the story, yea she lost way more in a few days but it was still ultimately her fault. None of her friends would've been killed if she either killed all the people in Joels party(probably didnt want to end up like him) or tortured him for a few days and let him go cause he did save her. Maybe this story couldve been about getting revenge on Abby for torturing him or not. This story could’ve been better. Expand

The general gameplay doesn't improve much from its predecessor. You sneak around, you engage in a firefight. I guess you can now swing on ropes.

The story is something that didn't need to be told. The ending is the same is the first game, the player didn't end up doing the one thing they meant to do at the start of the game. However, the journey in the first game was worthwhile despite the destination. The journey in the 2nd game is excruciating. It's not enjoyable to replay considering the player is mostly alone for the most part. You spend a few hours to save a character that dies anyway. Nothing you do in the game seemed fruitful. Everyone lost everything they had. One gains a foster brother and a hope to meet an organization they used to be in despite everyone they know it in is already dead. Maybe it's a setup for the final game, the nail to Ellie's coffin? I can almost imagine the third game will be Ellie being forcibly killed for the vaccine by this surviving Fireflies group. Whatever the story will be, I won't bother finding out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly I want to love this game and I'm forcing the playthrough but I just don't. The content is there but the sequencing is so messy. I appreciate what the aim was with the chronology and I'm deffinetely behind increasing positive lgbt representation, but the messy order of things doesn't invest me in the characters enough. It's like having the punchline prior to a joke, it just doesn't land and its just such a crying shame. I feel a lot of the game I'm just rushing through with all these new characters forced upon me to get back to the point I can progress the story again. As time went on I did get slightly behind Abby but I never really connected or sympathised with her and can't get over the fact I may have been a lot more open to her if her plot came first and it was advertised as her being the lead with Joel and Ellie being a surprise twist for the end rather than a tease. Imagine having that devastating moment once you had already bonded with Abby through her and Levs plot rather than trying so obviously to get you to change your mind after making you despise her. I feel that would've been a much more tense inner conflict if we'd gone through her journey only to realise we'd brought her to that moment, not realising her back story or goals and be torn between 2 characters we knew and loved as we suddenly realise who she is. Its almost like part 2 and 3 were both made simultaneously and mashed together. By no means is it garbage there's a lot of class voice acting and visuals here, but given the wait I feel its evident from the fan base a lot more vetting was required. The gameplay really hasn't had any major upgrades from number 1 and I'm surprised so many critics are ignoring this. The combat gets stale very quickly especially if you played through no 1 prior to recap and I honestly don't see how people say its been upgraded or improved dramatically given the time spent developing it. I will still buy and support naughty dog games and it is their vision and creative drive which 9/10 times blows me away, but this is a bit of a failed experiment and what could've been amazing is made quite frankly boring and mediocre by rehashed mechanics and a creative yet misguided narrative Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Going to be fair about this... have a great fun on this game, but i am extreme dessapointed. My critic its not about the base of the story. Vengance; Ellie against the tortures of joel. Its simple and strong for a videogame. My critic is about the plot. Im excluding technical, graphic and inventory aspects. Love those. And of course the IA (the only criticable about the 1st last of us it is same here).. 1st: play with abby..what a horrible character to play with, not charming not funny not grace. They make you hate her, then force you to empathice and worst of all, gave her the best gameplay parts. Never engage with the character or even like it. What a waste..
    2. The characters are kind of stupid: joel and tommy gave the names to the everyone they met (hi im joel.. maybe you heard abbout me. kill thousands. Someone you knew maybe) . then tommy says to ellie in the theater: "its over" and insist to come back to jackson. But then (in jackson) he aforce ellie to hunt abby once again. All because he cant? So tommy (one of my most love character) is a coward.

    3. When abby is about to begin torture joel, they gave you the impression they know each other (but never do). It will be much better that naughty dog work on a dark past of joel (that he torture abby or someone close to her), that way they give logic to the decissions of abby. But no. She tortures joel without regret and joel only shot his dad because his dad threaten him. So much anger in abby doesnt fit. Could fit if she still a bad **** but no, they insist in humanice abby, the antagonist. So redundand. Why cannot her and her group be just evil people.. on the end all of the people ellie kills has his motives and families.. so better do a game of friendship.
    4. Hate that ellie talks abbout abby as "abby" and abby (about joel) as "joel".. by their names.. are they so close? So incoherent. Once again forcing the bond with player (us) and abby (the ****)
    5. Last but not least.. you pardon abby? After you kill half the planet seeking her, you forgive her? Why?

I think they should work something simplier. Learn abbout game of thrones mistakes. And not try to get impresive, remember that first is a video game that you should like to play. And not a movie you should like to watch.

Unfortunately that was not the case for the second installment, putting the politics aside it was a far cry from what the first game managed to achieve. Yes the graphics and gameplay is better, that is not in question but instead of using those improvements in gameplay it lacks the deep engaging heartfelt story beats that naughty dog managed to perfect in the first. At no point did I feel connected to any of the characters in fact I dident even recognise the ones I knew so well. I found myself bored at various stages of the game, just playing to get through it, this was not an enjoyable experience in any way. It's not a zero out of ten and it's certainly not a ten, anyone that rates it that highly or low have no credibility whatsoever. The last of us part two is an average game trying to be a masterpiece and it tries too hard and fails equally as hard. There is a political side to this game that strangely has absolutely nothing to do with this game but of society. If you feel you need to bully people into buying a game or liking a game you are a despicable human being much like some of those characters displayed in this game ironically. It's okay not to like an idea or a creation, it's also okay to love it.

In conclusion this game does nothing different, nothing unique apart from highlight the flaws in the personalities of the people who review it, create it and play it.

However it actually revolves around finding inner peace and forgiveness. This is a good concept executed poorly, as I could not relate to any of the characters; Abby is a muscular woman that can and WILL break you in bed, Ellie has become an arrogant little ****. I have to admit killing Joule made me sad, however it is understandable because it’s a major plot event. I have to admit I played purely for the gameplay, but even then my gameplay was ruined because I had to stare awkwardly at the screen next to my mom BOTH times when Ellie and Dina was getting pretty handsy AND when Abby got porked from behind...therefore I give it a lowish score...The sex was unwanted and uncalled for. The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
