People criticize the flashback format but I believe it was perfect at revealing information when it had the biggest impact. The violence in this game is very self aware and Naughty Dog did an amazing job of conveying that every person you kill has their own lives. Abby became a hard person to like and care for, but I think Naughty Dog did really well with making me understand her side of the story, and had me sympathize more with her than our main protagonist Ellie. How it describes the relationship between the main characters, unexpected turns, showing the post-apocalyptic world! Then, as the actions of the characters are described, in the end you start to think, “Is everything so obvious? Who is right and who is not, is the character right?” You begin to think about the actions of this or that character!A new look for this character appears for you, for which you begin to worry! It was a great game. There are events I would never wanted it to happen but that’s life you know. The theme of ‘Revenge’ was carefully put together in a LOU style. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Not the game the fans wanted at all. Naughty Dog took a huge risk with the story. First off, amazing graphics and gameplay. We had to watch our favorite characters be destroyed and taken to their lowest points. We had to attempt to empathize with the “villain” of the game. No one liked playing as Abby at first, but she is actually pretty like able by the end. The way the game shows the affects of actions and comes together full circle is amazing. Ellie not killing abby shows that she has a tiny bit of human left in her. It is heartbreaking but amazing at the same time. It’s not meant to be a happy ever after story or something that takes the easy route. We get a better view of the world and the harsh way that actions affect everyone. Naughty dog said that you have to go in with an open mind and that not everyone would like the game. At first I hated playing as Abby and hated the way the game was going but it changed my mind and questioned my morals. Expand

That the last of us 2 has done very well because what he wants to convey is that killing is something that in video games you do not stop to think about and that what I like about the last of us 2 that what he does to you is in reflect on what you have done

This game is getting a lot of hate and it doesn't come from a good place. I read the leaks and it was heavily slanted towards making you hate the decisions taken with the plot. There is no political agenda with this game. This is one of the bad places the hate of the game is coming from and it's absolutely unfounded.

    Graphics

There is a huge improvement upon the Naughty Dog Engine from Uncharted: The Lost Chapter. Much of the open world element from the latest Uncharted game is present here in this one. Parts of Seattle are huge environments with no set path. You must figure out where you are going and need to go for yourself.

The attention to detail in the character models both in-game and in cut scenes is amazing. The shift from cut scene to gameplay is practically seamless. Textures and animations are fantastic. A lot of work has gone into the facial animations for the characters (even the infected) to the point where these people are no longer "voice actors" as their emotion is passed through the animations.

    Audio

This game has full 7.1 support and the same fantastic audio tweaking we found in Uncharted 4 and The Lost Chapter. With lots of presets available and the ability to tweak the balance on each channel and even configure for distance. I personally have been playing this game with headphones.

As with the graphical detail, audio has not been overlooked. The sound effects in game are hugely realistic. The fidelity uncompromising. There are enemies that use whistles to communicate and the directional audio engine works well with this feature, allowing you to often pinpoint the location of an enemy given by the direction the sound came in. This is not groundbreaking, but it's been masterfully put together.

The soundtrack is fantastic as well. The same composer as the first game has returned to write some tracks for this game too. It has the same moody feel and undertones. In the more tense sections of the game the soundtrack puts you on the edge of your seat and sets the scene wonderfully.

    Accessibility

This game was made to be played and enjoyed by everyone. The range of options available here is going to have something for everyone. The game also does not punish you or deprive you of any sort of trophy for adjusting the difficulty. If a section is too tough for you, you can decrease the difficulty to get by.

    Story
Ah, this bit. I don't want to include spoilers, so I wont.

I read the leaked information about this game and the way it was presented was very slanted towards hate. I, personally, do not get easily led by creative writing in this way. I took the facts without the pathetic bias and formed my own opinion.

This isn't to say that everyone who does not enjoy the story is incapable of forming their own opinions or that everyone will enjoy everything; they won't and don't. But the fact is a hell of a lot of the reviews on this page probably haven't played the game and are on the hate train. That's fine. Just, caveat emptor.

I, for one, enjoyed the story thoroughly. We're introduced to a new set of characters in this game who are written well and played by their actors wonderfully. There are huge ups and downs with this game. One moment you'll feel warm and fuzzy the next you'll think "what the hell just happened?!".

There are things that happen in the story that, depending on how much you actually understood from the first game (I.E. not attributing things to a certain character that were entirely in your own mind. Making out like one certain character was an infallible badass that no-one can touch) happen and you're powerless to prevent it.

I went into this with an open mind and not a childish mentality and I ended up enjoying the game and story hugely.

    Overall

Overall this game gets some entirely unnecessary hate from sections of the gaming community that are not nice. The hate doesn't come from a good place. It comes from a place of bigotry. Those who dislike the story and will dislike that last sentence because they feel attacked need to realise that that's where the bias in the leaks came from. The leaked information was heavily slanted and was heavily put in a position where it made you feel a certain way.

If you can't recognise that, fine. If you transcended the hate and bias and you approached it like me and still didn't like aspects of the plot or story, then that's entirely respectable and a valid position to be in. You're also unlikely to be the sort of person saying this game is a 0/10 and will actually be giving your own objective review like me.

For me? This game is a 10/10 and I'll be replaying this for years to come.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I was a big fan of the first Last of Us, but developer Naughty Dog made some drastic decisions in the story telling elements that, in my opinion, hurt this game. I actually liked the story in Part 2 and where it went, but to me it felt as if I had skipped a game or something. It felt like i was playing Last of Us Part 3, while getting to play flashbacks of the events of what should have been Last of Us Part 2 (Ellie and Joel/Abby's flash backs). Naughty Dog started the game off perfectly by throwing us into the events directly after Joel and Ellie escape the hospital and find a new life in Jackson, but it all gets jumbled by skipping 4 years into the future and attempting to piece together the events that brought us to where we are in this game.

In Part 2 within the first 2 hours we see the main character from the first game, Joel, die at the hands of a new character Abby and her "friends" (WLF). This initially was shocking since i managed to not get it spoiled for me, but it became a recurring theme throughout the whole game that got dry and made me detached from the new characters. In this game we play as Ellie, which i was fine with, but the developers made the mistake of allowing the players to watch all of Abby's "friends" die at the hands of Ellie BEFORE the players got to form an understanding of who they are, which ultimately made playing Abby's portion of the story a bit unnecessary since her WLF "friends" seem to serve no other purpose than to die, giving Abby an excuse to wanna kill Ellie. From a players perspective i got extremely bored of the game telling me that this person killed that person so now the character we play as has to go kill the person who killed the person they liked.

I get the point the Devs where trying to tell here: There are two sides to every story. However, trying to explain Abby's perspective felt jumbled as well. It turns out her dad was the guy who could have made the cure and was going to operate on Ellie, but was killed by Joel when he took Ellie away from the hospital. I feel the Devs did a good job explaining why Abby hated Joel and why she killed him, but I feel it would have been better to just go at it chronologically and not introduce her by painting her in negative way. I feel they should have allowed the players to get attached to her by playing the events leading up to her killing Joel instead of justifying it in flashbacks.

Also something that bothered me was NO CHARACTERS DIE TO INFECTED OR BECOME INFECTED. Like what a huge story point to just not even use. In the original game we see Henry and Sam and the complexities of suffering (Henry kills himself) due to the loss of his brother by Infection. In Part 2 there was some random enemy towards the end of the game that gets bitten by a Clicker as a way for Ellie to escape, but thats it folks. Everyone in this game either dies from a bullet or from being stabbed/hit, which after Joel's death, via a golf club, began to feel repetitive, and made me numb whenever i saw another character die in a similar manner. They didn't matter and i shouldn't get attached to them since they serve less purpose than a 3-D rendered set piece that doesn't do much to connect with the payer or drive the story further.

Not everything in this game was all bad. The gameplay is relatively the same, but with some quality of life changes. The player can now use grass to hide from enemies kinda like in assassins creed. Characters can now go prone on top of crouching. New attachments to weapons such as silencers and explosive arrows allow for some really satisfying ways for players to approach each new situation. Graphically this game feels next gen. Something as simple as walking and tracing back your footsteps in the snow really impressed me, but there are some frame rate issued to be had when in grass green areas kinda like breath of the wild had in the forest sections, but its doesn't take away from how gorgeous this game looks. The sound track is ridiculously good and the sound design is better than ever. Simple things like character voices getting harder to hear when in different rooms or listening to clickers nasty noises when sneaking past them sound top notch especially with headphones. I really enjoyed the guitar controls too

Also there were two new characters, Lev and Yara, that felt very well written and interesting for the player to engage with. They are Scars/Seraphites, which are essentially religious cultists. Lev is a Trans male who wants to continue his religious practices, but is critical of it when she felt like a he. No judgment there, but it lead to some interesting story elements about attachment and discovery. Most of the other new characters didn't really stand out as well as these 2 did.

When people talk about the first game they mention how good the story was. In part 2, I felt the story jumped around too much and characters died too often in similar ways, which left me overall disappointed 6/10

Let's start off with the pros. The graphics and scenery are amazing in this game. Everything looks extremely well polished and is just pure eye candy from the interactive environment to just the way everything literally just deserves an absolute bravo. The gameplay itself is much like the last of us one band hasn't changed all that much but I didn't feel that this was a downside due to the fact I liked the last of us one in the way that it felt and handled. I know that can be a bit tipsy because some people say it should run smoother or aiming should be better but overall I felt like it was just fine. I hate to admit it though but that storyline is awful. I tried so hard to like the story and tried to approach the game with an open mind but ultimately in the end it did nothing for me. If anything I walked away from the game feeling totally unsatisfied with the character development, general storyline, and not necessarily the events that took place but how the events took place in the game. There is just too many things that didn't make sense to me and overall I feel it was a bad decision for the developers to go this route. I get the whole concept of trying to do something new and edgy but there is a way to do it and I just felt like the developers missed the mark completely on really capturing the spirit and soul of not only the players but the characters that pulled the players into the game as well. The reason why I am giving it a low score is just because I was so enveloped and immersed in the story of the first one but absolutely felt nothing but frustration and no payoff in the end. I really understand that a story doesn't have to go my way and it honestly shouldn't it should be up to the directors and writers with however they see. But video games just like movies are here to entertain their audience and me personally I did not find any entertainment out of the story that I was hoping would really incite my inner emotions and leave me feeling like I played a masterpiece like The first game but unfortunately that feeling never came out. If you want to play this game then I wish you luck. If you did play this game and actually liked it for what it was and truly enjoyed it I'm not only happy for you but I am jealous of you. I can honestly say that there is no put way I will play this game again and it breaks my heart that it went this way. Expand

All around decent gameplay if you enjoyed the first. Graphics: Similar to gameplay, there is a slight improvement and without a doubt it is still a beautifulgame but it doesn't stand out as much in 2020. Story: This is where the game falls short for me. It seems that the story revolved around writing off one of the franchises most beloved characters in place of characters that are uninteresting. The writing seemed lazy and "try hard" edgy. Also about the first 3 hours are about 2 love interests that are angsty teens who can't speak what they feel. If that is your cup of tea then look no further. I much prefer the grittiness and character progression of the first Expand

This game is a masterpiece and a must buy if you own a PS4. I can't promise that everyone who plays The Last Of Us Part 2 will love it as the game has proved to be very divisive, however I have found the game to defy every expectation I held. The story is a truly bitter, despondent and horrifying revenge tale that builds engaging characters only to tear them apart and put them through utter hardship. Emotional trauma, grief, moral redemption, violence and vengeance are all themes encompassed by the nuisanced story.

Furthermore, the story is enhanced by gruesome, nasty gameplay that is weighty and down-to-earth. Each bullet feels powerful and destructive, and the brilliant display of gore with each headshot only accentuates the force behind each shot. The player can choose to sneak past enemies, pick them off with deadly precision or to rush headfirst into enemies and engage in gunfight. No matter which playstyle you prefer, each is made viable through the diverse range of weapons and trinkets at your disposal.

Wyoming, Seattle and the other locations which the player visits throughout the games 25 hour run-time are intricately animated. The breathtaking visuals are not only pure eycandy, but each location is also geographically accurate and mirrors its real life counterpart. It is awesome witnessing the decay of manmade infrastructure as nature restores itself throughout the city and pervades each building. However, there is a dramatic change in scenery with each level, giving each encounter it's own style and mood. For example, in one mission Ellie will be exploring the dank, and creepy, underground subway that is now host to deranged and grotesque Infected, however in the next level our heroine will be wading through the swampy marsh of what was once a freeway.

SUMMARY - The Last Of Us Part 2 is a fantastic game with a heartbreaking story, breathtaking visuals and horrifying gameplay. Naughty Dog have sustained their position as a top-tier video game developer with this installement in the TLOU franchise, and although there seems to be many games coming later this year from promising developers, I struggle to see how they could match the brilliance of this masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great mechanics, but the storyline, is awful. Really disappointed of the story, I was expecting much more than it was. It is a vicious circle, the game focuses on the death of the doctor who Joel killed. But what about the death row that all the characters you play with leave behind them? Every person a character kills has/had a lif. So the premise of the game, in my opinion, it’s broken. Expand

Really great game, maybe not all things are good and overall this game isn't as good as first part, but still in my opinion is worth it to play, gameplay is fun, story maybe not for all, but good, conroversial decision wasn't for me disgusting. Only two things what was really dissapointing is ending and second half of the game(more or less last 14 hours).

Also, the narrative in this game that 'violence and revenge is bad' is simply outrageously backwards, this is set in a post-apocalyptic America where violence is the only way to survive.

Having said that, I must say that the game looks absolutely stunning, as well as the soundtrack.

Gameplay was relatively disappointing as it is practically the same as in 2013's part one.

It's not as good as the first installment, but I think that would be unreasonable to expect. TLoU was one of the best games ever made. This second part did what it sent out to do. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I know this is my first review on Metacritic but I have several others on my steam profile. Im writing this as a warning to players who really liked the first game. First of all, this game is polarizing, it doesn't like to pull its punches when it tries to make you feel bad. I wouldn't have a problem with that if I was the one making the bad decisions but this game forces you to do ugly things and then tries to make you feel bad for those things.
I'm not sure how much of the team is left that developed the first game but I do know the people in charge have definitely changed and it shows in the darker atmosphere and storytelling. A lot of my anticipation of this game came from their marketing which showed Joel and Ellie but left out another main character that becomes prominent about half way in the game. This completely ruined the experience for me because I felt they were trying to cheaply get me to care for this character after all the terrible things she did and will continue to do.
Where the game easily gets my praise is in the visual fidelity, especially running on what will soon be last-gen consoles this game looks great. From the animations, the lighting, the voice acting its actually all amazing. Clearly Naughtydog are masters of their craft I just for the life of me feel like no one was allowed to criticize the story internally. Its violent and gory and the entire theme of the game revolves around revenge and about how revenge is bad and the cycle of violence has to be stopped. You kill hundreds of people and zombies in this game and in only a handful of moments before committing incredible violence did people even stop for a second.
30-35 hours of dehumanizing garbage, if there was ever a case for video games being too violent this one is hitting the upper edges of the scale. I have heard that some people really enjoy this game and i'm glad that you can enjoy something that i really couldn't.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This one hurt...a lot.
This is without a doubt most beautiful looking failed game I have ever played. Everything that made the first installment great was systematically and pointlessly destroyed by this game in order to justify a ridiculously sub-par message of "revenge is bad" in comparison to the rich and morally nuanced story of TLOU1. The story falls flat, none of the new characters have any sort of personalities or meaningfulness to them (they just seem bland and uninteresting) and then almost all of them die.
The seeming climax of Ellie's character arc and potential resolution of the game as we know it (up until that point) is cheaply held as collateral in the gamers mind as they are forced to replay the same past 3 days except this time as Abby (the games poorly developed excuse of a co-lead that nd kept secret from the public) who happens to have killed Joel in a brutal way within the first few hours of the game. ironically enough throughout the 10 plus hours spent playing as her, she is never humanized and developed enough to the point where we can meaningfully empathize with her motivations to kill Joel or even who she is (due to exceptionally poor pacing and even poorer writing which failed to address anything of character-significance about her)
To me, it is completely fine if nd wants to kill Joel, I don't personally agree with that decision however there are ways it can be done in an effort that makes his death meaningful by the games own designs. What I cannot accept however, is that for half of the game that should rightly have been Ellies, we are made to play as an actual pyschopath. This is due to the fact that nd failed to show any sort of emotional impact that all of the senseless killings had on Abby throughout her time cruelly made as the lead. Conversely Ellie took the emotional brunt of everything and was intentionally and cheaply used as the emotional punching bag of the game.
The ending was laughable in that Joel's death was shown to still have such a traumatizing impact on Ellie after all these years to the point where she feels justified enough to walk away from the life she has, travel thousands of miles to track Abby down, and then in the throes of trying to kill each other for the second time in a revenge fueled duel to the death, Ellie is suddenly reminded of a coincidental and cheaply placed memory she has of Joel (which happens to be their last conversation, yet another slap in the face compared to the writing in TLOU) which causes her to forgive Abby, despite the fact it was the entire theme of the game to embark on a ill-realized and rushed revenge plot where violence is ruthless and nonsensical.
Instead of writing a paced out dramatic and emotional story, naughty dog has decided to manipulate and trick their audiences to come to their forced conclusion of how violence is a drawn out cycle (which this game never truly resolves). This game is an insult to character development, character motivations, and general story writing. Save your money.

    - The graphics are amazing 10/10
    - Combat is also really good because you see how they tweaked the fighting from the first game to part II and how they added many more things, which i think create a good gaming experience. (at least for me it did) 9/10

    Cons
    - Joel being killed off for shock value.
I personally think that they should've killed him in part 3 or maybe not at all, because i just think that the whole idea of killing off the main protector is so overused nowadays in these post-apocalyptic games.
    - This game is full of forgettable characters
    - Character development that was developed in the first game was thrown out the trash in part II
    - They forced us to sympathize with abby
    - So many plot holes, like way to much
    - There were one to many parts that were unwanted and unnecessary
    - The ones who wrote the game apparently forgot what made the first game a masterpiece. The Last of Us isn't The Last of Us without Joel or Ellie.
    - Waited 7 years to just see one of the most beloved characters of the gaming industry tortured to death and then we see our little girl Ellie all alone and sad.Which is her worst fear by the way

Because what Naughty Dog did with this game was stepping up the show.

A movie's script can be well written, acting quality and actors may fit the part, characters can be well shaped and a movie can be philosophical, dark or may have a pleasing happy ending,
LoUII in my point of view is like a movie that intentionally doesn't want to have a positive conclusion and want you to feel uncomfortable on having a way of thinking that see the world in black and white.

In this sense i think that this game is not for everyone and can't be liked by everyone because expectations had to be adjusted on the story leitmotif and they couldn't, mostly given the popularity of the first game.

So for the people giving very low review i humbly ask them to consider that there are movies that fits a pizza with friends, movies that fits when you're with your loved ones and other that are best seen alone and in a reflective mood.
I think that Last of Us part II is the latter.

I think also that this game fits very well the Martin Scorsese discussion shared on the New York Times (https://nyti.ms/2CORqkR) about Marvel movies and the fact that is a pity that many artists "don't want" or are not in the best condition to take big risks on creativity and possibility to wander on how to make a piece of art, because video game like the one of the LoU are getting more and more like a movie.

I fear that giving so many bad reviews could in some way affect, going forward, companies like Naughty Dog to be more incline to not to take risks or bold choice in favor of the more safe path.

For this reason, in my opinion, even if you give the story 1 or zero this game is still a title that doesn't deserve to be bashed hard with a total rating of zero.

    My rating:

    Graphic 10/10 (https://bit.ly/2NyBCVq)

Many people absolutely hated the game and many loved it. Compare to the ending of the first game, the second game’s ending is more controversial, but is it bad? No, It’s not. Is the story of the second game bad? No, it’s certainly not either. First of all, I would like to address one issue. Many people calling it woke. First of all, I would like to address one issue. Many people calling it woke. Ellie was shown as a homosexual even in the first game, so idk why these people are complaining now. People happen to be gay or straight, and Ellie just happens to be gay, what’s wrong with that? Second of all, just like in real life, stories happen to people regardless of your sexual orientation. So what if Ellie is gay, as we can see from the plot of game, her sexual orientation wasn’t even the focus point of the game, her struggle with her emotion and inner conflict is. A lot of people felt like certain characters’ deaths were a little rushed. Well, that’s what death is like in real life, I’ve lost family members in my life and their deaths were just like Joel, Jesse or Owen’s. It comes when you are not expecting it, it comes suddenly and you will never be prepared for it. So in that sense, these people’s deaths are real, it’s hard to take, it’s emotional, and you never expected it. It only takes one things to kill someone and people tend to underestimate how vulnerable they actually are. Expand

This game is a masterpiece. Technically is absolutely fantastic. I can´t name a single game that comes close in quality terms. The graphics take the PS4 to another level, the ambience is superb and the gameplay (especially if you like the first game) is very good. All that remains is the story, the theme of all controversy.
To some will be great, to some is disappointment, it all depends

To some will be great, to some is disappointment, it all depends on how your feelings work. I started in one position view and I ended in another way different, that means the story did its purpose. I love all characters and some I thought I would hate forever. This is TLOU level of writing, hard, painful but in the end... human. A great, great game...

TLoU 2 is an incredible game. With an outstanding level design, an improved combat system, exciting set pieces and very powerful performances by all of the cast, in many ways The Last of Us Part 2 is the best game Naughty Dog has created up to this date.

The problem with it doesn’t come with the story, but with the way it is told. This tale of revenge is told masterfuly during the first 15 hours of the game, letting you not only understand but feel the emotions that the characters go through. After that, you play as a different character of which not all of its story arc is relevant so the story begins to drag, however this is compensated by some of the most tense and memorable parts of the game happening on that second part of the game.

The graphics and sound design are superb along the whole experience and definitively set the bar higher for quality in videogames, definitively a must try for every playstation 4 owner

O jogo tornou tudo ao seu redor humano e tudo o quê você faz existe consequência. Jogo mais que obrigatório pra quem possui um Playstation. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Love this game. Beautiful atmosphere, very detailed Seattle, intensive and brutal gameplay. Everything is magnificent. People love Walking dead as one of the best post-apocalyptic franchize, I love it as well. Why people hate this game, and still say TWD’s best seasons are the 5th and 6th. Death of the main character is one of the moments people love in GOT or TWD. This game is much more deep and mature. Ať the beginning, you think Abby is absolutelly worst character in this story, she’s ugly and IT doesn’t make any sense to have this new playable character around. But after 20 hours of playing, you create a bound to her, and in a final fight against Ellie, you are devastated because you love both of them. This game is a great continuation of our beloved first TLOU game. I want to thank Naughty dog for making this art. Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
