This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I did not read any of the spoilers but I did read all the hate online. I decided to play the game and make up my own mind. I enjoyed the game, I thought the story was solid, and I think it was a worthy successor to TLOU. I think everyone wanted a game where you keep playing as Joel and Ellie and continue on their story. They decided to throw things on their head by making you play half the game as the person you are trying to get revenge on for killing Joel. I wound up liking Abby and I thought her crew was ok. I do think there were too many characters overall in the game. The gameplay was fun, though having one open world section like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and then the rest be linear was an odd choice.

I also found this game to not be as creepy or as scary as the first game, the enemies felt less threatening, maybe because as Ellie you had a knife the whole.

Motion capture, graphics, and voice acting were absolutely amazing.

Overall I think people were mad the game wasn't made how they wanted it. Its not amazing like the first game but it's a solid sequel. Then again I kind of liked Uncharted 3 more than 2 so maybe I'm the problem.

Hard to like, but it feels essential to the whole "last of us" story moving forward. I have some issues and questions with some elements in the game, but otherwise it was a complex, hard to swallow, and super divisive. All I wanted to feel as the credits were rolling was hope in a very desperate way.

This is not a great game but neither is bad, actually is not bad at all, judging by my experience is an immersive game that will make you think, more less like red dead redemption 2 . It shows that not all storys have a happy ending. i absolutly recomend to play it at least.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Imo the story wasn't as good as the first one, and I'm confused about the ending like everyone else after my first playthrough. But I'm starting to appreciate it as I started to see it not just as a revenge story. I saw it as Ellie engaged in all those cruelties attempting to forgive Joel for what he did at the firefly hospital. Towards the end of her journey, Ellie realized how similar she had become to the very person she resented (and loved at the same time) and were possibly finally ready to forgive Joel. I'm not saying this justifies Ellie letting Abby live in their final encounter, but it could be one possible explanation. Gameplay-wise, amazing graphics, great atmosphere, absolutely adore the open-world section in Seattle, wish Naughty Dog had added more sections like that. In general, a decent game, I gave it 8/10. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Even tho there are things in this game I don’t like, especially the pacing, I still think it’s a great game. The graphics and gameplay is a 10/10 for me, while the story is a 7/10. To me the story starts of as 5/10, then it gets to a 7/10 and as we play as Abby it starts of as 6/10 and after some time the rest is 10/10. My main problem as I pointed out earlier was the pacing. It felt chaotic some times and I didn’t always feel what the scenes wanted me to feel. I personally loved Abby as a character. She had so many flaws (in a good way) and seeing her friends telling her that she was a piece of sh*t, and that her actions resulted in her losing almost everything and being tortured for months, I love that sh*t. I loved seeing her trying to get better and I loved seeing her grow as a person. Ellie to me was kinda boring at the start, but her story got better. Especially the last part, that sh*t was just greatness! Overall I understand why people didn’t like it, but I still enjoyed it and I hope the game will get the praise and respect it deserves for doing something bold as it did. As I said gameplay and graphics 10/10 and story 7/10. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I held off buying this after all the review bombing, making the assumption their pure volume meant the game had significant issues. But I relented and went in, eyes open to all the potential issues. Some of the story/dialog was certainly choppy ... but if you're gonna run a marathon, you're gonna have a few dud strides. I dont think the story is the mess some claim it to be. Abby's story and arc is quite good, if anything Ellie comes off as the more murderous. As others have said, the story runs too long and is overwritten but that's nothing an editor couldnt have fixed. It's not an SJW story and Lev is a thoughtful character. We also see the love and care Naughty Dog put into the game in every single pixel. The execution is superb. For that ND should be immensely proud. With a few cuts, the story could have been very strong BUT here's the main issue for me. This is the Last of Us 3, not 2. If we had another instalment with Joel and Ellie adventuring together as 2 then revenge to tie up the trilogy, it would have given players more time to come to the grips with Joel's demise. In any case, it's a good game and takes the player on a decent journey and is worth the price of entry. Expand

I would say the only thing I didn’t like so much was playing half of the game with the other protagonist, because even though it adds a lot to the story, her gameplay is not as fun as playing with Ellie. Also I felt this game was a lot more ideological based than its predecessor, which is not necessarily bad, but it is something that in my opinion doesn’t match what The Last of Us. There were a few times that I felt the game was totally focused on social criticism. I think that is cool, when done well as something in details, or something not to explicit like saying “This is a social criticism”. But it was still not so annoying to spoil the actual point of the story line. Really liked how the devs developed the relations between the characters, like Ellie and Dina for example, or Abby and the kids. One thing that I can’t say I liked but I really admire, is that Naughty Dog was really daring and had no fear of simply killing characters we liked, and this happens multiple times in the game. When I was forced to play as Abby I audibly said whilst alone in my room at about 4 AM, “I’m going to kill myself”. There are some of the best sequences of gameplay when the player is forced to play as Abby, yet I was pretty disinterested for most of the time. I spent essentially the whole time when forced to be Abby wanting to just be Ellie again. I don’t really love or hate the ending, but I honestly think the ending would have been more satisfying if Ellie either did not go out to find Abby again, or have her actually kill Abby. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The sequel is never as good as the original, but that doesn't mean The Last Of Us 2 is a bad game. 2013's The Last of Us is arguably the greatest game of all time, it was always going to be incredibly difficult for part two to live up to that standard. For the most part it did, but some design choices made key story elements fall flat on their face and the game does overstay it's welcome a little bit because of this. Story (5/10). Sound & Visual (10/10), Gameplay (9/10).

Story (5/10): I like what they tried to do with the story, it was just told in the wrong order. It was like reading all the even chapters in a book then going back and reading all the odd chapters. Ultimately I didn't care for Abby's part of the story because i already knew how it ended. There was no reason for me to be invested in the side characters (Owen, Mel, Manny, Lev, and Yara) in her arc, so the relationships she was developing didn't matter. The pivotal dynamic between Ellie and Abby also didn't matter for half of the story because we knew where it ended prior to half of it being told, it just meant that Abby's story felt like filler.
Then there's Joel's death. I don't think there is a single legitimate fan that didn't think this would happen, but damn did it miss the mark. It's very transparent that they were trying to reach the same heights as Sarah's death in part one to shock the player into being motivated. However, there was no payoff with Joel dying, when it happened my first thought was 'oh well, Joel is dead I guess, right what's next'. It didn't make me stop and wonder what I had gotten myself into like Sarah's death did. The story would have had so much more impact if I cared for why Abby wanted to kill Joel before it happened, not retroactively filling it in through flashbacks.
The game should have started with the zebra scene, where Abby's dad gets called back to the hospital to perform the surgery on Ellie, to then cut to Abby walking through the hospital only to see the Fireflies and ultimately her dad after Joel had gotten to the operating room. The rest of the flashbacks for both Abby and Ellie can then be used to create the first chapter to establish what occurred in the five years between Ellie's rescue and Joel's death. The end of Chapter 1 still culminates in Joel's death, but at least we would have a reason to care about it.
After Joel's death the story should then have been told in chronological order switching from Ellie day 1 to Abby day 1 and so on. It is an intertwining story that was told as if it was linear and that's the disappointment.

Sound and Visual (10/10): There is isn't anything you can fault with the sound and visual design, it is brilliant. From the terrifying clickers, bloaters and shamblers that you can hear in the distance, to the Seraphites' hunting whistles becoming more desperate as you kill them off or the melancholy backing tracks and the rain and thunderstorms, this game has absolutely marvellous sound design. The visuals are the same with dilapidated, soaring skyscrapers, thunderstorms and burning villages, to serene mountainous landscapes, to realistic facial and body movements this game is a treat to look at.

Gameplay (9/10): There's not much new here, but that's fine, it was already an enjoyable gameplay loop. if you enjoyed the gameplay from the first game then you won't be surprised here. The addition of the stalkers and the dogs significantly changed how the stealth mechanics worked, but they were used far too infrequently to matter. At times it felt like there were endless numbers of enemies coming from literally nowhere (especially in the last chapter), and the hyped infected vs human vs player battles were virtually non-existent and always resulted in you still fighting a large number of enemies. Though none of this stopped me from enjoying the moment to moment gameplay.

The Last of Us Part II is quite the complicated game. First things first, the graphics look out of this world. The fact that it’s running on a PS4/PS4 Pro and it looks like a next gen game, is just amazing. Now, subjectively, this games story isn’t badly written, it’s just very badly paced and and feels like it isn’t in the correct order. Reasons being that in most story’s you have a rising climax. In this game there is a rising climax, and at the midpoint where the rising climax gets even bigger, in this game the rising climax drops down completely at the midpoint, and is like this for a good few hours, until it immediately rises back up again. It goes up and down a few time’s before the ending, making this game, from a subjective standpoint, bad. But, for some reason, for me that didn’t effect me. I was still engaged with this game, I still wanted to play it, I wanted to complete my goal as Ellie. I was utterly and completely hooked on this game. And, to this games credit, once I finished this game and the credits rolled.. I sat there, motionless. I didn’t feel sad, nor did I feel anger, happiness or anything of the sorts. I felt empty. I felt completely empty. And no other game I have played made me feel this. And, also this game is by far the most emotional i’ve been playing a game. I cried and sobbed A LOT, and if you loved the first game like me, chances are you’ll feel emotional all through out the story also. Another big issue this game faced was its pacing. It’s all over the place. Like I mentioned. At around the mid way point, instead of the action getting more and more, it dropped, and you became less gripped by the story. The first 10 or so hours of the game will have you gripped, and you won’t want to stop playing, but after that you dont feel as engaged as previously. I feel if the game was structured in a different way, it would have been much more fun to play, and have you gripped through out the whole story.

Moving away from story. The gameplay in this is absolutely phenomenal. Every encounter you play whether it be against humans or the infected, you always have this feeling of dread or fear while you hide (or go guns blazing, depending on your play style) around the tall grass or under the cars as you try to get a sneak attack on someone, or something. The gameplay is like the first game, but better. This game flows much better, the gun play feels better, stealth has been built up on, and like the previous game, it gives you the feeling that you are in an apocalypse with little ammo.

Of course, there is a moment that has divided the fan base. I won’t tell you what to believe, but all I will say is power through to the end, it way change your thoughts, or solidify your thoughts. If you’re a fan of this game, you’re either going to love it, or despise it. I happen to be the former, it’s a wonderful piece of art and one of my favourite games, as well as its predecessor. If this game wins GOTY 2020, I’d say that it’s well deserved. Well done naughty dog, you did it again.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I have never left a review before for anything on this site, and actually just created an account to leave my two cents on this one. I literally just finished it this morning, and now that I can finally indulge in the reviews WITH spoilers, I am simultaneously saddened by the online vitriol from internet trolls and relieved that more in-depth reviewers were left feeling equally as confused as I am right now.

I want to just focus on the story with this review. I completely understand what Naughty Dog was trying to do to make us feel like every character was flawed, and that the world of The Last of Us is inhabited by far more darkness than light. That being said, it was very difficult to play as Abby for the 2nd half of the game. I found myself rooting for each member of her posse to be taken out. It felt as if I were playing Bill in the Kill Bill movies. It didn't feel right, even with the Lev/Yara storyline. I think if Abby had killed Tommy or Maria while on the run with Lev/Yara from the WLF, or something along those lines, I think I would have felt a lot more invested in her story, even if it still ended up with her killing Joel, but towards the end of the game (when she realizes he killed her father).

The nihilism of the world of TLOU comes through loud and clear in this chapter, and I applaud Naughty Dog for being brave enough to put their vision out there, regardless of the inevitable backlash. My hope is that whenever they come out with part 3, they wrap up the storylines in such a way as to redeem both Ellie and Abby, and consequently make the infinte sadness of part 2 worth something.

**Side note: I loved the Lev and Yara characters. Sexual identity is 100% self-determined, and I appreciate them working that into the story. If coming out in today's society is difficult, doing it as Lev did is even more impressive. More practically, it lends a real legitimacy to their escape from the Seraphites, rather than simply waking up and saying, this is wrong. Bravo.

I think there were several unnecessary moments and another highly risky one to get basic items.

Despite my criticism, I don't take all the positive side out of the game. Like the cut scenes that were sensational, the "heavy" moments, the attention to graphics, Sound Design, micro details. It is certainly one of the best games of all time, but it is not a perfect game, as neither is. So there are flaws that may be able to improve in the future.

I really enjoyed it. I don't understand the amount of hate this game got. These people created these characters and it's up to them and their vision to decide their fate. now although I can see where most of the criticism is coming from, I don't agree with the way it was delivered. just relax, enjoy the game and let it go.

It was not the game I expected, the gameplay is like the first game but improved, graphically it is beautiful and the story was what disappointed me the most, it is not that it is a bad story, it is just that the abrupt change was a 180 degree compared to first game. overall is good. not the best, but good enough.

The Last of us Part 2 hurt to play. I often found myself yelling at Ellie through the screen begging her not to carry out her revenge driven plan over and over again. The direction Naughty Dog took with the game wasn’t at all where I wanted them to go with it. I hated how depressing the game was and how sad it made me. But, the fact that this video game made me feel so strongly is a testament to how good the game is.

As a Character Study, TLOU2 is absolutely fantastic in that it shows the detailed progression of Ellie’s descent into madness. The circumstances Ellie faces constantly make her ask herself just how much she’s willing to lose to seek revenge on Abby and gain closure over Joel’s death. Her answer? Everything. And we see this at the end of the game: by the time she realized how pointless the cycle of violence was, she’d already lost her friends, her lover, her family, and even the last physical connection she had to Joel. But by ending the cycle of violence and ultimately forgiving Abby, Joel, and herself, she’s able to finally start her life. I loved how the game didn’t just discard the events of the first TLOU and was willing to flesh out and deal with untied knots from the first game, and although the end result was gut wrenchingly painful to bear witness to, I couldn’t help but feel hopeful by the games finish.

I felt as though Abby’s section of the game was fantastically done as well. I won’t get into this part too much, but Naughty Dog’s ability to introduce and make you care for these intricate, fleshed out characters in a short amount of time is really incredible.

However, this game isn’t without fault. One of my biggest issues with this game was probably the huge disconnect is has from the first game. I’m glad ND took a different path with this game and didn’t just decide to make TLOU2 the same thing as TLOU1. However, so much has changed between the first game and this one, and I feel like what would’ve serviced the game more is if they had replaced some of the “point a to point b” gameplay sequences with a couple more fleshed out cut scenes detailing how Ellie and Joel’s relationship has progressed. I feel as though that would help bridge the gap of the 2 games and also help make the gameplay seem less dragged out (seriously, a lot of the times the game took so many unnecessary detours that were obviously for lengthening purposes, it was really annoying.

Another thing that brought TLOU2 down was advertising. Now I’m happy with the end result of the game, BUT... it was basically advertised as another buddy adventure with Ellie and Joel where there would be a lot of time spent with him, and that’s just not the case. I can understand why people dislike this game as much as they do just due to the fact that they were basically convinced by adverts that they would be getting a different game than the one they ultimately received.

Overall, a really great game with a couple of noticeable flaws. Not for everyone, but I really appreciated this game for what it was.

However, once i finally sat down and played it a dew months after, i was absolutely amazed at how brilliant this intimate narrative of love and loss actually was. The game is not perfect, its bloated and paced inconsistently with some bits of dialogue that feel like they needed a pass over in the editing room, but none of this even comes close to diminishing the immensely powerful journey that deals with incredibly heavy themes. Its absolutely not a game for everyone, and in fact I can understand so many players finding it hard to enjoy or sit with. The closest i can book piece of fiction i could compare it to would the works of author cormac mccarthy, primarily the road or no country for old men. In terms of film, the nightingale. Its a beautiful piece of art that not only depicts the bare face of human depravity and barbarism, but it also shows the resilience to find hope in the despair integral of the human condition. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Part II was a beautiful game, and well done. The graphics were definitely impressive, and the imagination that went into the development of the scenery and the world building was top-notch. Gameplay improved from the first one (Part 1 was a 10 for me, although it's gameplay mechanics could be repetitive at times), but I dropped this sequel down two points simply for the story. It wasn't horrible, by any means, like so many of the leaks and distressed "fans" of Naughty Dog have been saying. It still sucked me into the world, and I cared about the characters, some of which met terrible ends (and rightfully so, in a cruel world, zombie apocalypse story). But the new game, while impressive and absolutely incredible in some ways, missed out on some of the originality, and the human connection between Joel and Ellie (and other characters), that made it hard to live up to the first. For me personally, I hold story over gameplay, so while this one improved in those areas, it got a slightly lower rating because the story wasn't QUITE as magical as the first. But I wasn't expecting it to be. That's a hard ask of any sequel of a 10 star masterpiece. But they were close, and improved in many ways, and continued to invest their heart into the making of this game, like they had in the first. Bravo, Naughty Dog. I ignored all the negative hype, and truly enjoyed the game. It even tug at my heartstrings a few times.

Additionally, and not that I care much, but it's worth mentioning for those considering to play: the zero (0) through five (5) review scores seem ridiculous to me, considering the work and execution of this game. I could see emotions dropping the scores quite a bit, maybe as low as 6 or 7 if your feelings were really hurt, or it just didn't "do it" for you. This game is no 3. But to each their own. If you haven't played it yet, I suggest you do. It's certainly not the first game, but it is outstanding none-the-less in it's own right. The few friends I have who also played couldn't even talk about it for a few days after we finished the game. That sort of impact and shock is hard to obtain in a video game, and Naughty Dog did it. Afterward, we talked about how immersive it was, and how shocking some of the moments were, even with some of the "leaks" and spoilers that had tried to ruin it for us. Ignore the negative hype and give it a shot. Or don't. But if you skip this one, you're missing out.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm baffled by the review bombing of this game. Even if one does not like the story, and I do have a few gripes with that compared to TLOU 1, this still is top-notch graphics, great gameplay, and sound.

I absolutely loved the first game, which is my favorite game ever, and technically this is far superior. Where this does have some issues for me is with the story. I felt a serious gut punch when Joel died, but it makes sense to me in this world that he had it coming. Even if we know him as a protective father figure, to a lot of other people he's a mad killer. I disliked the pacing of the game, the Abby parts felt a bit too contrived and long, but overall still resonated with me for the most part.

Hating this game for having a tiny bit of LGBT content seems crazy, just like hating it for killing off a loved character seems weird to me, hating the story is fair, but hating everything else about the game makes no sense to me. This is not as good as the first game but it's still a great experience with great gameplay, even if the pacing is a bit off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is by no means the greatest game ever made, but it's no dumpster fire either. And lemme point out that I am NOT being paid to say what is said in this review.

Story: The story is one of the boldest I have ever experienced. I saw Joel's death coming a mile away (not because I saw the leaks that came out in April, because I didn't), and yet I was still absolutely drowned in sadness and anger for his killer. And Ellie had to watch. People say it was completely out of character for Joel to die the way he did, but that's the thing: Joel in this game isn't the same man as the man we played in the original. Throughout the first half of the game, you experience flashbacks with Ellie and Joel, learning that the Firefly incident is driving them apart, and once Ellie learns the truth, Joel becomes a much more sensitive man, and after that, he's not the hardened killer we once knew. It became his instinct to not straight up torture or run over every dude that he comes across, and in the end it's an incidental slip-up that gets him killed.

Once Joel is killed, Ellie is filled with hatred and rage for Abby, the girl that killed Joel, and she goes on a suicidal revenge mission to Seattle to find and kill Abby and all of her friends that were present to Joel's killing. But as she gets closer and closer to that goal, she starts to lose herself, turning into the person that Joel never wanted Ellie to be. She becomes this unrecognizable monster that we (the players) and her friends don't recognize. In the end, Ellie becomes the villain of this story.

As for Abby, the reason why she killed Joel is because Joel killed her dad, who was the surgeon in charge of the Firefly outpost in Salt Lake City, and possibly the last man on the planet that could develop a vaccine to the pandemic. This rage is recognized in Ellie once Joel is killed. Abby is filled with rage and hatred for Joel, that she follows up on leads on where he could be, and end him once and for all. However, once Abby has accomplished her goal and returns to Seattle with her friends, she wonders if it was worth it or not. And as she's in the middle of a territorial war with these cultists, she runs into two kids that are on the run from their own kind, and Abby starts to develop a responsibility for these kids, since they saved her life from being hanged and gutted. And so she goes to great lengths to do the best for these kids, and protect them with all her might.

That is the genius part about this story: Ellie and Abby eventually turn into the people that they hate the most: Ellie turns into Abby, and Abby turns into Joel. It's very enticing to see how much these two characters change by the end of the game. Which brings up the final point of the story: the ending.

Ellie and Abby are on a beach in California, about to escape, when Ellie stops Abby, and then they have a fight to the death. Ellie was nearly victorious, and on the verge of drowning Abby. If Abby had died, I would've been content with that, since it would've been the appropriate ending. But, personally, I like the real ending more. As she is in the middle of drowning Abby, the Ellie that we once knew starts to resurface, and starts realizing what she's doing. Abby spares Ellie at the beginning of the game, and in the middle, when Abby is about to choke to death from being hanged, Lev (one of the kids that Abby starts to care for), saves Abby, who spares Ellie again when she is confronted in the theater, who eventually saves Abby and Lev's life from the slavers in California. Ellie has done so many terrible things to get to this point, that killing Abby no longer means anything. Ellie remembers that her last conversation with Joel was a good one, and decides to spare Abby in the end.

Once Ellie returns home, she can no longer play the guitar, because two of her fingers were bitten off by Abby during their fight on the beach. Which leaves this empty feeling in Ellie, and she leaves her guitar and her home behind, hoping that one day, she can live the life that Joel wanted for her. It makes you wonder what will happen in The Last Of Us Part III (if there's ever gonna be one).

I'll briefly go over the rest. The gameplay hasn't changed much compared to the original game, which came out in 2013, but it's stealth gameplay makes for some tense situations, whether it comes between dealing with dudes with guns, or the terrifying infected. You have to use anything at your disposal in order to succeed in any situation. The game is easily the best-looking game ever made for the PS4, and runs smoothly at 30 FPS, even on older PS4 models. The game hasn't crashed on me once, and I've played through it 3 times already. And the music is very deep, and I still listen to the soundtrack from time to time.

In the end, this game is good, and I hope this game stops receiving dumb, intoxicating comments involving the story, sexual orientation, and death threats towards the devs and actors.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed my time with the game but I find it hard to justify it's existence. Some sections of story drag on and the game just feels way longer than it needs to be. Joel's death should have been built up better. Maybe start the game playing as Abby and showing the whole thing with her dad being the surgeon Joel killed and she swears revenge. Let us spend enought time with her and her squad to get attached and sympathize with her. While I personally always thought Joel would die or have to suffer the consequences for his actions at the end of the first game. I think the sequence of events leading up was poorly done. I did not hate Abby and enjoyed her quite a bit as a character.

Id of much preferred NaughtyDog to have focused on new characters in this universe instead. But I think most of the "controversy" and accusations of "pandering" is just dumb and baseless.

If you take the time to think critically instead of your heart, you'd find the game alot more deep and enjoyable. The games message is deeper than 'violence bad'. It's a story about revenge, grief, acceptance and forgiveness. It's meant to make you uncomfortable and question your own beliefs. I still think this is a great game overall. But compared to all of NaughtyDog's previous games I've played its rough.

People have been saying that the only theme of the game is “revenge is bad”, and it is such a simplistic narrative to base a game around. But for me, I found this take on the revenge narrative to be really refreshing. I have seen the idea of “revenge is bad” done multiple times before, but usually in those stories, the audience has a clear idea of who is in the right, and who is in the wrong. In the Last Of Us 2, Neil Druckman provides the audience with all these sharply written characters, each with their own individual motives, and lets the audience decided who is in the rights. For example, Joel killed Abbys father because he was going to kill Ellie to try and develop a cure for the cordyceps virus, so Abby tracks down and kills Joel, which then motivates Ellie to seek revenge. We have all these different characters with their own motivations, but none of them are necessarily the right motivation. Each of these characters is caught in this cycle of violence and self destruction, to the point where it becomes incredible difficult to distinguish who is good and who is bad.
I loved how this game set us up with a cliche protagonist vs antagonist story, but then abolishes these labels as the story continues. When the game began, I was supporting Ellies decision to kill Abby and make her pay for what she did. But as the story continued, we see that Ellie actions have equal, if not greater consequences, than the actions of Abby. Just as Abbys action of killing Joel was cruel and inhumane, Ellies actions of Killing all of Abbys friends just to gain revenge was also inhumane as well, hence the cycle of violence. I loved how this game actually let the player decide who’s actions are justified in this game, rather than face feeding it to them.
The best part of this game was trying to figure out the motives of each character, specifically Ellie. We see Ellie pretty much destroy everything in her life in the peruse of revenge. Whilst it was really sad seeing Ellie loose Joel, it was heartbreaking to see her lose all of her other loved ones. We see Ellie choose revenge over her loved ones time and time again, because she just cannot shake the guilt of loosing Joel. Just as Joel’s decision to save Ellie forever damaged their relationship, Ellies decision to leave pushes away those close to her to continue to seek out revenge forever damages their relationship. The game provides an ugly, brutal and heartbreaking perception of the life of these characters, and I though that it was written to perfection.
However, there was one major problem I had with the game, and that is when we shift to the perspective of Abby for the rest of the game. No matter how interesting a sub plot to a story it, if it doest relate to the main narrative, it is ultimately a waste of time. This is the case for Abbys Plot line. Whilst there are some off handed references to Ellies story, the majority of Abby story involves her interacting with new character and experiencing a story that is completely unrelated to the original narrative. I found it really hard to relate to Abby and her side characters because they just seems irrelevant, and for that whole segment I was just waiting to get back to Ellies side of the story. I think Neil Druckman was attempting to humanise Abby and flesh out her story, but embodying this concept within an unrelated plot line just feels frustrating.
Which leads us to the ending of the game, where Ellie ultimately spares Abby's life. Despite popular believe, I really liked how this story ended. Throughout the entirety of this game, we have seen Ellie take up every opportunity to get revenge on Abby, regardless of what it cost. Time and time again Ellie has lost herself to revenge, and towards the end of the story, we see her final chance to walk away from this destructive lifestyle, as she is holding Abby under the water. For me, this moment was so powerful and tense, and I found myself hoping that Ellie would end her destructive cycle here and spare Abby in this one moment, and that is what she does. Even though Ellie has lost so much and sacrificed everything just to kill Abby, it is only as her own self destructive cycle of violence is about to end where she sees how little meaning is left in killing Abby, and decides to use this final moment to turn everything around. Up until this point, the player had no hope that we would ever see the same Ellie that we have known to love, as she has become this cold hearted monster. But this moment acts as the smallest bit of hope for the player to hold on to that the real Ellie isn’t lost after all. I think this is a good game because of these deep, powerful, though provoking themes, and I think it is an excellent example of great story telling.

This should definitely be appreciated. To summarize, I think this game is far above the first game apart from the story and it is definitely a game that should be played. got the game 2 weeks ago and finished it today. didn't rush the game, i took my time. i first thought that the game was gonna be bad as seen on the reviews and the leaks but no, i loved the game. im not gonna spoil anything. in the beginning when IT happened i stopped and put the game away for 2 days. after that i played the game, loved it and the challenges it has. completed the game on hard and the difficulty was good for the first play through, not to hard but also not to easy. highly recommend playing it on hard if you haven't played it. the story of both characters are amazing. i could fully emerge in the game and could understand both characters just like the first part.
the ending was quite a surprise even though i saw the leaks but the leaks dont give the full experience. gotta say pretty good game even though most (myself included) said when we saw the leaks that the game was bad and that the ruined the series. i dont know if its an 8 or a 9 but im gonna give it an 8 just because that they could've made the game longer. finished it quite fast but that doesn't mean its a bad game. so if you haven't bought the game because of the leaks and rumors back then, buy it and you'll be surprised on how good it is.

Q: why we have to play with “Abbey” for that long!!?

Ok, it’s nice to know her story for 2-3 hours maximum.. but she became as a main character! And I hate her because she killed Joel!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's a remarkable story with excellent gameplay. There are few games that make me feel as much emotion and interest in the characters as The Last of Us. Most of the characters feel very vivid and alive, and this creates a powerful interest in their story.

There are some clear problems with the story telling at points, however. I think the switch to playing as Abby was ultimately a creative pursuit that came at the cost of the player’s enjoyment of the game. Whilst it was a unique and interesting transition to go from anger and dislike of Abby, to eventually forgiveness; the player has to endure hours of quite unpleasant and uncomfortable gameplay to get to that point. The first few hours playing as Abby were not enjoyable for me, and I simply wanted to return to the story I was already invested in with Ellie. It felt like a grind to get through these few hours and whilst I did not hate Abby, and understood why she killed Joel, I had no interest in her story for around half her tale. So whilst it was an admirable feat, to turn the player from anger to forgiveness, it felt more like the writers were trying to demonstrate their writing ability in steering the player’s emotions, and for me this came at the cost of my enjoyment of a substantial portion of the game. Some may argue that those unpleasant first few hours as Abby are supposed to be that way, to create a satisfying transformation into forgiveness; in my case, I did feel forgiveness, but it was not worth those hours of uninteresting gameplay. Overall I would have just preferred to dive deeper into Ellie’s story, and have a few cutscenes to demonstrate Abby’s background. Perhaps if Abby’s tale was more intertwined with Ellie’s – offering us a different perspective on Ellie’s story, it may have felt more meaningful; but apart from a couple of scenes where there was some overlap, it felt very disconnected. In particular, I strongly disliked the section where you control Abby and are forced to try and kill Ellie. This I think was one of the most absurd decisions made in a video game I’ve played, again, the sense was that whilst it was an interesting dynamic and quite unique – it felt absolutely not enjoyable and offered no satisfying reward or outcome.

Overall, this is one of the best games I’ve ever played. My review focuses a lot on the negatives but this is simply because the positives are so refined it's hard to say much beyond they told an amazing story and it was one of the best experiences I’ve had with a video game. The first section playing as Ellie was a solid 9.5/10 for me, but the score was reduced to 8.5/10 upon playing Abby’s section.

My main complaint about this game is that the combat-mechanics had a steep learning curve compared to the first game. But by the time I mastered it, it felt smooth, so it is not that big of a deal. Also, I found that stealth was a good alternative to combat most of the time. The option to sneak through most levels without killing a single living person, is one of the things I liked most about the game. I would have loved to see a pacifist playthrough make a difference though.
I didn't love the ending, but it I disagree with people who think it is terrible.

Understandably if you are not into experiencing intense emotions of despair and pain as your entertainment I would stay away from this game. The reason I do not give it a ten out of ten even though I love the story is solely because I think the gameplay is really outdated, and I actually near hate it. I sped through firefights because I found it so similar to every other encounter. The sequel is definitely due for an overhaul and in all honesty I don't think that survival action is really fit for this game, it often just becomes annoying having to constantly gather and gather.
