A tragic and dark story of love, hate and forgiveness, The Last of Us Part II is a very brave and ambitious game, and the perfect example of what videogames should strive to be.

It's definitely a big improvement over the first game in many ways such as the gameplay mechanics and the depth of storytelling, but unfortunately there are some very few moments where the pacing felt weak.

The intense music combined with the masterfully crafted atmosphere and the fantastic audio design are some of the best I've seen in a videogame and they make up the whole experience.

The Last of Us Part II takes some big risks, and makes some decisions that some people might not agree with, but honestly, I loved it...

    Final Rating: "Masterpiece" ~ 10/10.

By far the greatest accomplishment in interactive media. If there ever was a game to be called "masterpiece", this is it.
Completely aside from its story (which is one of the all time classics too), it's literally the best made game ever made (so far). Just like with every ND game before, the amount of love to detail is beyond insane and sets it apart from every other experience out

I did not want to hold the controller to move the main character towards the end. Such a bizarre experience not wanting to pick up the controller or click buttons to progress the story because I wanted nothing to do with this person who only caused pain and suffering for herself and those around her. Near the end I seriously considered not progressing past a certain point in one of the scenes where I did not want to do what the game was forcing me to do. Would love to have been in the meeting room when the creatives were coming up with this story. Clearly they wanted to do something different, to push some boundaries, but they chose to go in a way that for me was just very distasteful. How did they ever get to a point of thinking "Yep, this story is going to work". A "memorable" experience, but all for the wrong reasons and not one I needed. Expand

The game can be described in one word-boring! It's beautiful, it's incredibly detailed, but it's very boring! When you play the second half, you want to turn it off! Abby's story is dull and idiotic. And the story that tells us the game is also banal and boring. This is not a masterpiece, this is a normal quality average game.

It's pretty obvious why a lot of people are upset, they were expecting a video game and Naughty Dog gave them 40 hour lesson about growing up. This might seem a bit extreme to some but I liked Abby, she was a flawed, vulnerable, hard hitting (literally and figuratively), masterstroke of a character, just like Ellie - two sides of the same coin. I'd go as far as to say Abby seemed to be a better crafted character than Ellie. Enough of the character dissection - a video game has me thinking about characters and their personalities - Naughty Dog, you guys are awesome!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A mediocre story. The characters are too bleak and poorly developed. The Last of Us: Part II is an undoubtedly story-based game. So my review will be focused almost entirely on the story. The gameplay is incredibly similar to the first with added movement options and different enemy types. Instead of following in the steps of its predecessor, the sequel throws away much of its character-development, atmosphere, and world-building for the sake of adding a playable antagonist. Despite early news promising the development of Ellie and Joel's bond, the latter is killed in the prologue of the game by said antagonist. Instead of naturally becoming a revenge story, the writers try their hardest to make the player emphasize with Abby - something incredibly difficult to accomplish if the player developed a connection to the protagonists from the first game. Characters close to Ellie die or abandon her unceremoniously throughout the course of the game in scenes that seem more reliant on shock value than good writing. Those who die are always taken out by Abby, and you'll occasionally play as her for these scenes. At the ending, Ellie saves Abby's life before challenging her to one last fight. Despite having two of her fingers bitten off in the struggle, Ellie gets the upper hand and is all set to drown the woman who has taken everything from her. With a brief vision of Joel flashing through her mind, she makes a disappointing decision to let go of Abby and allow her to get away. At the end of the day, Ellie is left with nothing. The player has gained nothing. The central issue that pervades the entire story is characters acting unlike themselves. Tommy and Joel give their names and home location to an armed group they just met. Jesse, who has been shown to have a level head, rushed through a closed door into a room that could have had any amount of hostiles. He was, of course, immediately shot in the head and killed. Ellie murdered possibly hundreds in her quest to kill Abby, and not only untied her, but she also challenged her to some strange form of honorable combat before letting Abby go free. It is not good writing. It's characters acting completely unpredictable just for something terrible to happen. It's like they can't create shock value without making someone act like an idiot. Lastly, there is no joy in The Last of Us: Part II. Not if you came into it with the previous characters in your heart. Every beloved character is dragged through the dirt constantly with no moments of reprieve. It's one miserable scene after the other. The only "uplifting" moments tend to happen when the player is controlling Abby. At the end of the day, there is no satisfaction for the player. None for Ellie. None for Joel, Tommy, Jesse, or Dina. You don't get your adventure with Ellie and Joel. You don't get your revenge. You don't get a glimpse of the hope for a better future that was present in the first game. It's devoid of hope. The only thing you get at the end of the day is a message that revenge is bad, but it falls flat once you realize that the only person who got their vengeance is the one that came out on top. Expand

This game has poor, contrived writing that is trying to prove a point. It is forced and unconvincing. In addition, you have gameplay from 2013 and NPCs that speed up and slow down like GTAV in 2013.

The last of us part two had me hating moments of play (only due to the story beats) and I found myself watching and doing things I didn't want to do! The key thing here is that by the end everything wraps up in such a beautiful way and as it sat with me, the more and more I loved it. I loved it so much in fact, I am just about to begin replaying again, just to see everything that happened with literally tonnes of added meaning.

None of the characters from the first game, especially Joel and Ellie, are diminished in any way, only improved. None of them are done a disservice either, some of you may know what I mean but I don't wanna go into spoilers. The end redeems everything!

In terms of gameplay I think it's tense, thrilling and engaging. It kept me going through the slower story beats and is a massive improvement on the original. I've seen people saying otherwise and I don't really get why.

I just want people to play this game and not dismiss it just cos of what others are saying about it. It's a fantastic story that hasn't been told in any form of media before (to my knowledge) and people shouldn't be put off by things they've heard! Give it a go

Then, the ending takes a complete 180 and drops everything at the very last second because "ReVeNgE bAd". No payoff. Zero gratification for spending roughly 30 hours playing a $60 game.

The Last of Us Part 2, is a game imposed by SONY and ND, with the intention of enriching this post-apocalyptic world by laying the foundations of the series for HBO, nobody asked for this kind of experience with graphics and animations that are extremely realistic that It differs with a very loose script that is reflected in a story with so many gaps in the plot and full of tricks that forcibly trying to manipulate you and make you believe that you are facing something great, but at the same time that you add hours of gameplay, you realize It is built in the cheapest style possible, rewarding you only with the best it has, the flashbacks.

They present you with little elaborate characters, flat and without credible attitudes, in the end, the Studio manages to destroy Ellie, Joe and Tommy, who do not behave rationally and do not respect the personalities established in the first installment.
Here, in her attempt to shake the audience, Abby is now with us for long hours, Joel's substitute, but written in such a disappointing and simple way that the vast majority of consumers in this beloved franchise would not care or will miss. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First, I feel a lot of these reviews are negative just because of the LGBT content. Second, I think people didn't want a sequel, they just wanted to replay the first game. If you don't have something different to say in a sequel I don't think you should bother just rehashing the same old same old from the first one. Part 2 has a dark, depressing, brutal plot but there are still quite a few moments of sunlight and wonder in it too.

The gameplay is awesome, the visuals are great. Cut scenes fold effortlessly, sometime unnoticeably into gameplay. It feels open world though its not, and while it feels like you can wander anywhere, it does a great job of somehow subconsciously steering you along the correct path. The mechanics of upgrading your weapons are easy and encourage you to search areas you don't necessarily need to if you want to find all the available resources. The AI is spectacular, especially the way different factions communicate with each other, and how they all have different names, discover fallen bodies and send out warnings, etc. You can get through much of it through stealth alone, though I found myself wanting to kill everything and sometimes just started a gun fight for fun if there were enough resources around. Its VERY long, and its nice that you can go back and just replay certain chapters if you like, as I definitely had favorite areas I really enjoyed (like the flooded city, the burning village, and the boat rides).

Anyway, if you're just in it for the story alone, and are REALLY REALLY attached to Ellie and Joel, then you probably won't like this as they are not the same characters from four (game) years ago. They're still great characters, but you're introduced to a lot of other characters as well and it can get complicated if you just wanted a rehash of part 1. Cause this ain't that at all. But I thought it was great, and hard hitting, and definitely packs some emotional punch. It forces you to do things you definitely don't want to do, or feel good about, but I think it still makes for a strong meaningful story, especially given what typically passes for a story line in most games.

Indeed, what the establishment ‘professional reviewers’ ignore is that a game is more about the gameplay and graphics. It needs to have emotional appeal and storytelling that can endear the gamer. The LOU1 had this in abundance. However, the LOU2 in its cause to ‘subvert expectations’ has given us something cheap, gut-wrenching and non-sensical which leaves (especially, fans of this franchise.) you feeling absolutely empty and resigned, e.g. the application of Joel’s death was similar to the death of Luke Skywalker.

    What were these people thinking?

I honestly wanted to quit playing at this point and wish I would have in hindsight. The only reason I pressed on was the hope that Ellie would still get to kill AbBy. The fact that the main character loses everything in their plot for revenge yet the antagonist gets away scott free without even a sense of remorse or self-inspection is a huge turnoff from the story.
Numerous plot holes, lack of chemistry between characters, unlikable personalities from everyone besides the old characters, it's insane how such a low effort story made its way onto this series.

And who cares about the gameplay when the developers were clearly only trying to sell its story? If all you talk about in trailers and interviews is the story, then that's what I'm going to focus on. Good graphics are easy to do nowadays, gameplay is just copy-paste of a 7 year old game with mindless new additions that don't take away the repetitive aspect of it. It's a mess, a waste of money, and honestly, a disgrace to the series, which seems to have died already at the second game.

Maybe the company shouldn't have fired the people that actually made good games like Amy Hennig or Bruce Straley. I think little druck is probably angry knowing he'll never reach the talent or creativity of those two.

The game's plot is heavily based on empathy towards the second playable character, if you do not resonate with the character and feel empathy towards her, the entire plot falls apart. Unfortunately, I didn't connect with Abby, no matter how many dogs she pet and kids she rescues, she did torture a person whilst their adopted daughter begged her to stop. No remorse, for somewhat deserved comeuppance yet pointless torture - which put this character beyond redemption until a moment she actually reflects on that, never happened, so I never connected with her. Let's move on to the gameplay. Well yes, it's very much the same as TLOU 1 but is that necessarily a bad thing? I understand why people aren't ok with this since innovation is expected in sequels. To me, TLOU series was never about the gameplay, Naughty Dog's primary focus was the story and that's where they banked on. And banked on indeed! Fans are split. Yes the story leaves a bitter, burning acidic taste in your mouth from the get go. The story is dark, gritty and leaves you empty but that's exactly what makes it a brilliant game. Character development was nicely paced and needed. Acting chops of of each character in the game was top notch. The emotional impact that TLOU 2 rivals that of a finely crafted drama movie. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As a fan of TLOU1 I came into this game apprehensive. I stayed away from leaks and spoilers but I had a feeling that something big was going to happen. And BAM it did, death of a main character from the first game, it shoot me. The idea of a revenge story was interesting to me. It was mentally painful at times to play, to deal with my grief and the grief of the characters in game but I stuck it out and became fascinated by the story and the characters. Ellie and Dina have amazing chemistry and their love shows throughout. But Ellie's need for revenge outweighs everything else to the point of obsession. It's pretty brutal.

There is a point where the game switches gears and you all of a sudden play as the character that killed the main protagonist from the first game and for me I was SO MAD at that.. for about 30 minutes. Then when my anger waned and I was able to get back to the game I started to enjoy playing as her and as her history and motives are shown I started to grow to care for her as well.

You think the game is ending but it isn't there's actually a few more hours and then the real end is really emotionally heavy. I left the game unhappy, not with the game just with everything, I was emotionally exhausted. It took me a day to really work through my feelings and then I understood how amazing the game was. No other game has ever made me actually think about consequences for actions and the emotional toll of doing things like this game did. It isn't something I would play to be happy but it's something I will play again just to get that feeling back, to understand each character further, to enjoy a piece of media that makes me FEEL something viscerally.

Mechanically, the gameplay is a huge step up from the first game, the movement is fluid, you can now prone, and the dodge is fantastic. the crafting goes further and you have many more skills you can access in your skill trees. Even if you didn't like the story I can't see how you could give this game a lesser rating, just based off of how smooth the gameplay is.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is the best game of this generation for me.

The graphics are amazing, the colors, the characters expressions and body acting was captured with perfection!
The final confrontation between Abby and Ellie, the way they moved, their eyes, the expression in them was breath taking, heart breaking!!!!

The jogability and usability of the controls and game, visual and sound options are truly amazing.

The voice acting is absolute perfection.

The story brakes my heart, but also brought me so much joy and the end, it leaves the door open for a Part 3, and I really hope ND does it too.

It is a game with a dark story, an adult/mature one that will not endear itself to everyone.

The basic idea of the story is simple: When Seeking Revenge, you should dig 2 graves and Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here (referring to the path of Revenge)

It is a story of revenge, fury but also of hope, love, forgiveness and redemption.

I loved that ND uses Abby's story to bring the Story of the Last of Us full cycle and to trace a parallel with Ellie's and Joel's. Joel's redemption and Ellie's fall from grace.

As Joel found his redemption taking care and, after, caring for Ellie like a daughter, so does Abby with Lev and Yara, before both Joel and Abby were not the best of people, far from it but in caring for a kid made them slowly change and "start seeking the light again", to try and become a better person.

In Joel's case that meant, sadly, having to kill the Fireflies in their main base in order to be able to save Ellie's life.

In Abby's case that meant, sadly after she killed Joel, she had to be saved from the Scars by 2 kids in order to care for their well being, something that later, took her to do unimaginable things before to get the necessary medic kit so Yara could live.

And what an amazing road she took...the Ground Zero chapter's infected she had to fight was one of the most amazing things in games I ever saw.

Ellie's road on the other hand was so heartbreaking because we know her, we know her and Joel from the Last of Us, their rode, their pain, their bound with each other was our bond to them in the first game, we share her grief and hope to get back at Abby's group.

But ND made us see and share on Abby's story too, and her friends, at the end we also see them for the flawed people they are, with good and bad, and feel sad that the path to revenge takes everything good from Ellie, we see the trauma she feels, the price she pays after killing everyone of them, Ellie's show when she discovered that she killed a pregnant woman, and the price she pays again after Tommy guilt trip her to go after Abby again, but at last, right at the last moment.

I am glad that she could find a way to try, just maybe, one day, forgive Abby, and see that she is not so different from Joel at that moment, and as she said to Joel that she would like to try to forgive him for not letting the Fireflies sacrifice her life in search of a cure, that maybe someday she would like to try and forgive Abby to, if nothing else because Allie herself would not be able to live with herself after killing so many, and that killing Abby would not fix anything, just make everything more miserable.

I cried so much during this game, and felt joy, and hope and got crushed.... at the epilogue, I really hope Ellie goes back to Jackson and live her life, maybe find the strength to let go of so much hate.

I cried even more when Ellie tried to play the guitar....even that was taken from her...

In the universe of The Last of Us, as with our own, we can only totally separate "bad guys" from "good guys" a handful of times like the Rattlers gang at the end, a group of evil people that decided to enslave others for personal gain and survival instead of trying to create a community like Jackson (for example) or even the WLF and "Scars", both terribly flawed (and even evil sometimes) groups but not without their good side.

Overall, an awesome game. I love it to bits and will play it again on NG+

Second, those upset over Ellie being a lesbian its clear you are lonely and miserable exhibiting rage over a fictional characters sexual preference...its sad, pathetic really. Keep in mind it is you who are the snowflakes. I'd like to thank Naughty Dog for a game which they clearly put their all into it. I'm only 9 hours in but felt compelled to put a review in due to the nonsense here on metacritic which is a display of ignorance. The graphics, story, dialogue, music and gameplay are exceptional and improve on what was excellence in the first game. The characters communicate throughout giving a better sense of who they are and where they've come from. Anybody who played the first and enjoyed it surely will love this game...of course that's said if your manhood isn't affected by the lesbian presence which is not at all shoved down the players throat as I've read in some of these small people's reviews. A narrow mind is laughable and also explains why many on here are lonely and probably miserable. I'm stunned in 2020 that you all made this "political", but I'm not surprised. Anyway... this game is phenomenal and to buy into a snowflake narrative would be your loss if these opinions do in fact dissuade you from purchasing this game. Character development is top notch..and humanity is on display moreso than part 1. The story can be ugly, but aren't we. It is what people are and if you can't handle the brutality and emotion its not a title for you. The environments are steps above the original and the music sets the tone. Reactions in characters us the best gaming has to offer...as is the dialogue which is to say well written. Only 9 hours in and yeah, this is your game of the year. Thanks again Naughty Dog fir attention to detail in the form of broken glass crunching under Ellie's feet and setting the atmosphere with the proper gloom. I'm 100% satisfied. Metro Exodus.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is phenomenal. Not as good as the first but sequels coming off a game that good rarely are. The characters and world are as detailed as ever and making loving or hating them feel so impactful. I was almost certain the game would start with Joel being killed, considering who he was and the consequences of the choices he made in the first game, and through his 20 years of survival. His death was harsh and sudden, fitting the bleak grounded tone of the previous game, and the lifestyle he thought he might outrun. It portrays his acceptance of the consequence well, showing the final piece of his arch that he knew he was getting what he deserved. So it was tough, but set the rest of the game in motion. Ellie's fall from grace is a hot topic of debate but it makes sense to me. She was always troubled by survival, and needing meaning in her immunity. Chasing Joel's killer, as well as the relationships strained along the way, was a strong story of coming to terms with being a villian, just as the fjrst game was. I think people forgot at the end of the day she's been with Joel, a true villian, for a while mow, and they shouldn't have been surprised she took on his world view. Regardless, the writing is great, the acting even greater, and the graphics prove ND still knows to inch every ounce of horsepower out of this gens PS. It's a hell of a ride, but one worth taking. It'll hurt, its not always perfect, but its so damn good. Expand

This is a real tragedy, a complete disrespect to all the beloved characters and fans of the first videogame. This is just a contest for who can be the most unlikeable character... It's full of forced plot twists and lazy flashbacks that literally happen for no comprehensible reason at all.
Neil Druckmann and Hayley Gross will go down as the most incompetent writers of the whole videogame

Naughty Dog could not have made the end of the first game more meaningful than they did in part 2. And then that story takes a turn and the person you perceived as the villain turns out to be very human aswell which is apparently a tough pill to swallow for all these 0 raters that can't distinguish fictional characters from reality. Joel and Ellie aren't some heroes from a comic destined to have great adventures for eternity and live to tell the tale. It's a rough world in which Joel did some horrible stuff and that just caught up to him. Of course everyone has a right to their opinion but I dont get how one could love the first game for what it was and proceed to **** all over part 2 because Joel is killed in a meaningful way. If you really loved Joel so much you should feel like Ellie and be extremely motivated to actually play the game instead of just the first 2 hours. then there's the SJW bull**** that I can understand even less. Ellie has been a confirmed lesbian since Left Behind and shouldn't be a big deal at all. Ih yeah and then there are some Asian characters one of which happened to be trans, you know, like how some people are in the real world. It ties into the story too, in a believable way. The game doesn't make a big deal of it, though, nothing is forced down your throat, it's just there. And although those things being there dont have to be political at all if you choose to not look at it that way but just take it as character trades, what the inclusion of those characters does show us how much bigoted closed minded people there are, who get so angry from a lesbian and a trans character that they feel the need to rate this game a 0 one hour after its release and proceed to spend hours ****ting on the game on social media and send threats to the developers. That last sentence applies to the 'can't get over Joel being killed' people aswell but at least they are not necessarily a bunch of homophobic **** but just can't grasp how amazingly well written the plot of Part 2 is. So long story short; I dont understand the hate this game gets at all. I get that this story might not be for everyone since it's dark and sad and unapologetic but at least go in with an open mind and actually play it. Just play it. Its such a damn good game from exceptional storytelling to stunning environments, ridiculously good graphics, beautiful soundtrack and overall audio, so many little details and great combat that has some improvements since the original Last of Us (though mostly the same but that's not necessarily bad).
Downside is that the game is so realistic and soaks you into this post apocalyptic world so much that some encounters with infected almost made me crap my pants and made my heart almost explode with fear and adrenaline, especially with bloaters, shamblers and whatever the **** that thing in the hospital was.
    Do recommend.

Masterful storytelling and gameplay, I personally cried 4 times during the campaign. I truly believe is a game that everyone should (with an open mind) play. Let’s all hope the vicious cycle of hatred stops one day.

Improved gameplay from the first part. If you liked it in the first part, you like it here.
    Ovesome grafics and animations.
The biggest minus is the plot. He kills everything. Constant luck or bad luck of the main characters. Love triangles here and there. Dramatic moments that look just ridiculous. The game has the city of Santa Barbara. And the game itself is like the Santa Barbara

The plot of this game killed a series. Thanks Nill Drackman.

I completed the game the day before yesterday and I have had some time to reflect on this. You'll have likely noticed this game has been review bombed heavily, undeservedly I think. Other reviewers have pointed out that the characters and or story are badly written and would rate the game on that criticism alone a 0 or 1. I'm on the other end of the spectrum. I think the characters were completely believable in their actions and I think more than enough time was spend on showing where their motivation comes from.

Even if you disagree with me on this after you complete the game, that's okay, this game is still a technical master piece. From the graphics, amazing animations and facial expressions, the controls and combat, no other game before has executed this level of excellence before in my humble opinion (the last game to make me feel that was Red Dead Redemption 2).

The atmosphere this game manages to bring on screen which supported by incredible sound design and voice acting is nothing short of amazing.

Playing this game gave me an intense feeling of dread, hope, anger, joy and peace.

To describe The Last of Us Part II in one word: Intense

it's a gruesome and down to earth experience, unpredictable from beginning to end, and i'd recommend it to anyone who can stomach a reality check or ten. The gameplay is spectacular and probably the most detailed game in the entire market. Hoping for more in the future.

Please if you are not a homophobe nor a 12 years old spoiled kid that only knows to throw a tantrum about everything sit through this 26-27 hours masterpiece of a game and then come and give it a zero. I honestly don't understand all the people nagging about the game, some didn't even played the game for more than 3 hours.
I'm not gonna go through too much detail to avoid spoiling

I'm not gonna go through too much detail to avoid spoiling anything. the game carries most of functionalities from TLOU1 and has many new ones. graphic wise it's as beautiful as it gets. the main problem that I had with the game was the character movement, which I got used to and I think I could easily ignore that in my rating. I love the fact that the story was an emotional roller coaster. I strongly believe that it's not everyone's cup of tea but if you are angry because of the story line and gave it a low score just think about the fact that game did what it supposed to do artistically.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
