Even if not the biggest fan of some of the plot points/ way characters are handled they do accomplish their goal of evoking emotion and getting a response whether positive or negative. Environments, gameplay, and world are all improved and TLOU2 is still one of the best games of the year and is a true Naughty Dog game from beginning to end. Expand

The biggest problem with Last of Us Part II is how it looses momentum and resets itself when the story shifts at a certain point. Not only is this section cover the same timespan of the main story, but it also resets the player to upgrade a character all over again.

If this segment of the story was appropriately woven in between the central plot, then it would be more reasonable to call it a 10/10 game.

The game is far from a “masterpiece”, it definitely has many issues in its story, specially regarding to Abby. However, the gameplay is super enjoyable, the animations are the best I’ve ever seen, the music is amazing and levels are fun.
It the game wouldn’t have disrespected some characters and forced us play as Abby, it would have been better than the original, it’s a shame.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

Killing one of the most beloved game characters ever in such a raw and almost torture-like manner and then asking their players to put on the shoes of the perpetrator is a lot to ask for and there is probably no other studio in the world that would do it. In reality, one can be held accountable for one's actions and one rarely rides against the sunset and lives happily ever after. That everything is about perspectives and we all are heroes or villains depending on what part of our lives, what actions or people we encountered in the spotlight shines on may have never been better told in any media. I might have wanted a different ending but the game is basically a masterpiece no matter what part of the game we are talking about. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so, when I bought the game, I read the reviews and got scared that it would be terrible. The story was heavily criticized, and so was the gameplay. However, upon playing the game i realized that most what everyone complained about was the fact that they lost Joel. They acted as if he was a Saint but in reality he wasn't. Yes I loved the character but he did bad things a d and the game did justice. The story wasn't even bad. Only problems I had with it is how easy Abby turned on the WLFs, the fact that they had Abby kill Joel in the first couple hours felt like a let down, as they portrayed Joel as a part of the story in the trailers which felt like an advertisement lie.

Asides from that. The game play was more than awesome, the gore levels are very realistic to compared to other games, the characters are actually good. Personally i feel like lots of those negative reviews stem from homophobic reasons

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played all through TLOU2 and I genuinely liked it a lot. Its not as fresh or new as the originals, so I already feel like it has that part going against it, but overall as an experience I enjoyed it, and I found the differences between Abby and Ellie interesting.

I still think that if anyone hadn't seen the spoilers and didn't have their opinions of the game warped by the "rational anti-sjw" YouTubers, it would easily be better received and people would actually think for themselves. Even if some ideas of representation came off repulsive to people who get that upset by that kind of stuff, I believe it would be easier to brush off for that crowd. I personally liked Ellie's relationship with Dina, even if I feel Dina lacked some background in some areas, but what I found to like about her was that Ellie, even with all the **** shes gone through, had someone that she could love and be comforted by who accepted her for who she was, and I genuinely found that endearing. What I liked about Abby was that she was essentially a representation of what Ellie COULD have become. She got her revenge, and when she was given the chance to back down from Ellie and spare Dina, she did, even after all the **** that Ellie had gone through. In the end I actually believe Abby went through even WORSE circumstances than Ellie did, yet she decided to move forward and not be consumed by hate anymore, while Ellie couldn't even live with herself anymore and her entire identity became engulfed in rage and hatred, letting it get the best of her and her friends.

The game was clearly trying something different here that isn't normally done in story driven games, and while I was strongly opposed to playing a different side of the story, I grew to empathize with Abby and appreciate her arc as a character, and see how contrasted with Ellie. They're both different sides of the same coin. Both characters basically broke even, yet both processed their tragedies differently. Given that the theme of TLOU2 is "hate", I would say it does an excellent job of portraying it. Instead of Ellie choosing to move on, she chose to seek revenge. Instead of choosing to be happy, she chose to let the anger consume her, leaving her with nearly nothing left, but the smoldering ruins of her life. I wished the best for Ellie as well, and I can see how people are disappointed in the ending sequence, but I honestly was fond of the message it was trying to promote. Revenge sounds like a sweet prize in videogames, but in this scenario that tries to mimic reality, it is a often a hollow victory .

Id have to give the game an 8/10. It's trying something different that falls short in some aspects, but I respect what its doing and in many ways succeeds at it. People who are giving this game 3's and below while pretending to be "honestly giving their opinion" are just trying to veil their short sighted anger, while having the entire experience already ruined for them because some "anti-PC redpilled" youtuber told them that you're an idiot for liking this game. Almost no triple A games deserve ratings as low as a 3, and ESPECIALLY a game as polished as TLOU2. Even if the games story was as **** **** as people claim it to be, it would still deserve a MINIMUM of a 6 out of 10 for the level of detail and fidelity it has poured into it.

I cant convince anyone otherwise of how to view the game because it feels that anyone who even browses YouTube has had their perception so monumentally **** up to the point that there is no discussion to be had. They just see the game's leaks where you see everything completely unexecuted and left to the imagination, and then hear about it from someone online who wants to call it "SJW trash" and it will immediately be subject to the worst possible lens of skepticism and reviews. If everyone in this game were a bunch of straight white dudes, nobody would give a **** and maybe the only thing that people would criticize was that the story goes a bit too long.

8/10 for me, and to someone who dislikes the game, a 6/10 MINIMUM under any circumstance.

Had mixed feelings about this game it was very controversial I think it turned at better than I thought there were some parts that could have been better like the Abby part like how you waste time trying to save Yara but she dies and how the the story between her and Ellie are not really connected apart from her friends. But the end really got me because I think the theme of this game showed revenge and forgiveness. This game showed that vengeance is not good Abby took that road and she lost all her friends. Ellie also took that road and lost a life with Dina but saw that it would just lead to more suffering. How Ellie was able to forgive Abby for what she did and when she wanted to try to forgive Joel. Joel's death was not dumb it's what we all saw coming anyway it what motivates Ellie to get her revenge therefore making this game. Gameplay is great especially on the hardest difficulty. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Was hyped about the game since it was announced and I have forced myself to not watch a single trailer until I got to play the game to keep the entire surprise to myself.

And what a surprise when I started the game to see Joel be beaten to death by this unknown character from an unknown group. I was taken by the guts and wanted revenge just as much as Ellie in what seemed to be a long-to be adventure to Seattle.

However, where I was first disappointed was when I thought we would have a Ellie/Dina adventure all the way from Wyoming to Seattle filled with beautiful scenaries and interesting dialogs in a TLoU1-like adventure just turned into a teleportation all the way to Seattle. From there, it was just an overdose of gunfights with enemy and infected until the part where you control Abby for the second part of the game, to re-do a Seattle-through adventure but by another point of view, which is, also, excessively filled with gunfights at the point I was just forcing myself to play in Seattle Day 3 in order to get to know the end of the story.

The end of the story, which was according to popular opinion, somehow completely rubbish was in my opinion really deep and relatable as to see Ellie's character which developed into the young lady she is now and all the terrible things she had to suffer and to see her completely, completely exhausted in the final fight with Abby and who just wants everything to stop and regrets going on such a revenge quest.

It was just overwhelmingly sad to see Ellie, which I thought had somewhat of a bright future in Tommy's camp, forced to fight again and to lose everything and everyone she loved and lived for. And to see her going back to the farm where she left Dina to see an abandonned and emptied house was a very sad yet, to me, satisfying end to the game and made me feel so sorry for Ellie.

She had everything, and this everything all went away in an instant and she lost so much more, including her soul, by going on a revenge quest accross the country. Which maybe, for some of the haters out there, could be something for them to reflect on.

In conclusion : I really loved the game and I think the story was just amazing but I think in terms of gameplay choices, there was way too many gunfights and meaningless confrontations as long with an excessively long part of playing Abby for a player that wanted to know more about Ellie. Another thing to avoid such disapointment amongst players would have been to give to the players the choice to either kill Abby or not, and possibly, see the results of our actions on Ellie's mental health.

If I would have one advice to anyone who wants to play the game after playing The Last of Us Part 1, just play it, but gradually, and just let yourself be carried by the story this game has to tell.

This a Quality game, the story may not be as good or creative as the first, but there is still a lot of passion in the story telling and overall pacing. Hey guys maybe think about WHY Abby killed Joel, I loved Joel as much as all of you but to say Abby is a **** character is a bit dumb. Ellie and Abby both go through tough scenarios and it makes for a story that heavily thrives on the events of the original, Also the gameplay is a HUGE upgrade from the first game's gameplay, and the graphics look pretty damn good too, I respect your decision to not like this game, the story was very subjective and more people hated it then they liked it. I liked it but I feel Naughty Dog should've thought things out a tad bit more to appeal to more people. Thanks for Listening

This video game does not deserve the notes as a 5 deserves in my view an 8.

What I like about this video game is that when you control ellie you kill people and dogs without thinking for example, there is a part that explains it well, in the hospital you kill a woman

What I like about this video game is that when you control ellie you kill people and dogs without thinking for example, there is a part that explains it well, in the hospital you kill a woman who was playing ps vita, and then (optionally) you kill a dog, when you're with ellie you don't care, but then when you're with abby it changes the thing because you have killed someone without thinking if they have family children.
That the last of us 2 has done very well because what he wants to convey is that killing is something that in video games you do not stop to think about and that what I like about the last of us 2 that what he does to you is in reflect on what you have done

Atmosphere is gorgeous, gameplay is well improved, the sound design is incredible and all the accessibility options are amazing. The only downside, and it's a huge one, is the story. Too little of one beloved character and way too much of a new character with a bulked out presence, slapped hard with a far too ambiguous ending!

Although it’s not as tightly written as the first installment it’s a wild narrative that speaks volumes on violence and loss while also being extremely gripping. Not once did I find myself bored, maybe scared or thrilled or depressed, but I never wanted to put down the controller. I also don’t think it was perfect but mostly because of specific segments that had me dying too much or being confused on where to go next. But the combat in this game is brutal and most of the time feels as real as a fame can get. The story is the subjective factor responsible for most hate towards the game. Joel’s death and Abby gameplay is the most hated aspect. But if you’re open minded to what this game has to offer you would enjoy the ride because this is one hell of game. Expand

For the most part I can’t forgive Abby for killing Joel, but I could still get interested by her side of the story. Ellie’s was simply amazing, this story of revenge eventually overcome by the forgiveness she had begun to give Joel was a great way to wrap things up. Primero me gustaria decir que the last of us 1 es mi favorito y the last of us part II lo estuve esperando un largo tiempo.

The Last Of Us: Part II is depressing, dark but yet beautifully crafted at the same time. Sure, the plot has it's downsides but it doesn't stop it from being engaging and also unique in its own way of teaching the player its main message. Do yourself justice and at least give it chance, rather than bashing it from the spoilers that were leaked; you might be surprised.

    PROS:
    - Gameplay (It's improved in every way from its original predecessor and is incredibly addicting)
    - Exploration
    - Graphics and Overall Presentation
    - Sound Design and Musical Score
    - Acting
    - Impressive AI
    - World-Building and World Design
    - Story Arch and the ideal of "Revenge" in a film motive
    - It's Brutality and not being shameful to show the cruelty of the world
    - Main Characters (I feel like the leads are incredibly strong and are flawed; which makes them compelling)
    - Ending that, in my opinion, finishes this tale off perfectly and starts Ellies' true journey.
    - Settings (So much customizability and an option for people who are handicapped to play normally)
    - Platinum Trophy Difficulty (I'm a completionist and this game is quite easy to do so, unlike the first)

    CONS:
    - Pacing (I feel the momentum stops at full speed halfway in the game when the "twist" comes into play)
    - Too Long (Game should have had it's massive final climax three chapters BEFORE hand. This game really needed another script revision to trim the fat)
    - Structure (While I understand the idea of why the story is structured this way, it still doesn't work and can feel really off-putting and lazy)
    - Main Characters (Majority it's not a huge issue but there are some SERIOUS conflictions with character motivations that the game doesn't like dig through or explain)
    - Supporting Characters (While acted well, they seemed either flat or non-existent)
    - Tedious Level Design (While amazing to look at, some chapters can really drag and take triple the amount of time that it should have been)
    - Changing Weapons (This is minor but I felt that "Holding the Square Button" wasn't that responsive and I would instead randomly swing my melee weapon when trying to be stealthy)

In the end, The Last of Us: Part II is not for everyone but for me, it was an emotional time. Although it has it's shortcomings and is defiantly not perfect, it's far from being a total mess and to me, shows that Naughty Dog is one of those companies that will take risks; even though it may divide its fanbase.

    VERDICT: PLAY IT

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I enjoyed the game a lot. I don't 100% understand why everyone is getting so annoyed and upset at the game. I would give this game an 8 only because there are a few things that could have made the game better. Number 1, a better way for Joel's death. Joel starts to get up yanks the golf club out of Abby's hands hits her in the legs, she falls and Joel gets shot in the face (it probably never would have happened but it would have been a better way for Joel to go out. Number 2, why was Abby's character development really bad, it made sense why she killed Joel as he killed her father but the could have made so much more out of that instead of including all her friends. If they just focused on the relationship between Abby and her dad (like Joel & Ellie) instead of all the different characters and their feelings it would have been a lot better. Otherwise, I believed the game was really well made and it was fun to go through. I would 100% recommend the game. Expand

Gorgeous lighting and environmental effects make the experience that much more immersive. The base combat system is very similar to the first game, but it gets broken up through various takedowns and quick time event-style fights. In terms of story, Naughty Dog took many risks with this game. I feel that the story is gripping, and it elevates the medium while other games tend to focus on more cookie cutter style narratives. Every story decision in this game is explained...eventually. The game relies heavily on its nonlinear narritive. For example, the game uses many flashbacks and repeated timelines with different characters to tell its story. It works very well in most parts of the game, but it grows tiresome as the game moves along. Also, some segments of the game involved too much looting and shooting. I would find myself getting bored during some of the overlong segements where I was tasked to traverse the city, especially when there was no companion along for the journey. All of that being said, it is a wonderful video game. It packs as much, if not more, of an emotional punch compared to the first game. The mood and tone are much darker in this sequel, and moments of levity are sparse. This is a project that I feel should be experienced by all gamers. It is boldly written and visually stunning. The game's developers don't provide fan service or give the audience what they expect. The constant subversion is part of what makes this game a must-play. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game is an artistic masterpiece. The mechanics are improved but to the point where it feels familiar with some new flair. The new enemies are a great addition. The way they communicate creates a more suspenseful element for sure. The A.I. can be a bit clunky at times, but that could be due to the medium difficulty I chose. As for the storyline.....I think Abby is a great character, there I said it. However, the reason I don't give this a perfect score is because we're introduced to a new character only to watch and learn that her entire life is filled with defeat and sorrow up until the end. The game has you hate her and then begin to feel bad for her, making you lose the affection you built in the previous game for Joel and Ellie. The last flashback is almost an insult. You're thankful that their last interaction was positive before he met his end, but you'll always wish to have seen how they would've rebuilt their relationship. That's my bias of the game. But damnit if I don't admit how amazing and captivating the game is. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of Us part 1 was a 10/10 story with probably 6/10 gameplay in my opinion. Well here in the second one it is probably the opposite. I LOVE this new gameplay mechanics when you play as Ellie (on hardest difficulty its even better, you have to really outsmart your enemy, watch out for your ammo and trully think before you act). It is BRUTAL, you can deform your enemy, make them suffer, cut off their limbs, disarm them and make them beg for their life, before you kill them, it is something new and fresh, that I missed in the first one. On the other hand, the story is much weaker then the first one. Pacing is terrible, you play as Ellie the first half of the game with 4 flashbacks and than you play the other half as Abby with her own flashbacks, the problem is, that these two narratives dont connect at all, all you learn as Abby is that her group is alright and pretty much innocent. Abbys story gets better at the end, when she connects with Lev and finds her long ago lost feelings. I liked the ending, Ellie was possessed with revange and lost everything because of her selfish acts (just like Joel in the first game). At the end she reminds herself of the last conversation with Joel where she said to him, that she cant forgive him, but she can at least try, thats why she lets Abby go. This story is about forgiveness, not about revange. Loved Ellies parts of the game, but I was bored with Abby tbh, well ... It is still a great game and it is a must have for PS4 for its controversy itself ... Im giving it a weak 8/10 (deserved 7, but Naughty dog made some AWESOME games and Im forgiving them these flops) ;) Expand

The gameplay is basically same as the first, with a few more possibilities (jump, crawl, dodge). Graphics are often fantastic, same for the sound design. The level design is better than the first game, more varieties for the levels, some great parts to play (the forest by night, the building late in the game, the first encounter with the scars). No major glitches for me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think people are way way too hard on this game. From what I’ve seen of the reviews, a lot of the issue people have is with the writing. They say that Joel should have been avenged, or not killed at all. They say Abby was not sympathetic enough for them to care about the ending, but going through this game, I’ve had such a hard time seeing what you’re saying. I was upset when Joel died. Distraught beyond belief. Even had to stop playing for a bit. But the story that came out of it was well-done. Whether you admit it to yourself or not. Abby’s story was compelling. It made me care for the characters that Ellie had taken out. I was mad when I began to play as her again, then I slowly became mad at myself for defending her, then I was mad at Ellie. I didn’t know how to feel for a while. This game is an emotional rollercoaster to be sure. Anyway I have more concerns to address. I’ve heard the complaint that Joel and Tommy acted out-of-character in order for Joel to die. Which I can see at first glance, but these games are not “first-glance” games. In the first game, there is not a single point where Joel would have stopped to help a stranger. But now he lives in a community that thrives on helping people. It thrives on giving people chances and helping them live. After living in a community like that for 4 years, or more in Tommy’s case, of course he would do that. It makes sense. Our penultimate complaint I’ve heard is that Ellie is an unlikable character in this game. She’s a jerk. She’s nothing like the Ellie we knew. Well, of course she isn’t. Of course she’s a jerk. The man she saw as her father figure, lied to her about the most important moment of her life. They didn’t truly talk for 2 years or so, and just as she’s ready to start forgiving him, he’s stripped away from her. Right in front of her face. She’s not the same fun-loving, wonder-filled 14 year old we knew. Things change. And after what happened, that’s a perfectly logical destination to end at. Heartbreaking, but it makes sense, and it’s good well-written story. Last but certainly not least, the ending. The ending is rough. I will give you that one. It is very rough, but it is not bad. The first game ended very bittersweetly. This game was just very very bitter. Which I expected nothing less from this dark of a story. Ellie, as hard as it is to admit, she made the right call in the end. I was breaking down when she was threatening Lev. I did not want to fight Abby. The game did it’s job for me. You cannot complain that Ellie is a jerk and that she’s nothing like she was, but then also complain that she doesn’t murder Abby. Those complaints are so contradictory it hurts. Ellie didn’t take the high road. She took the bear minimum of a medium road that it took to not lose herself completely. If she had just stayed behind, or just left without fighting Abby, maybe she would have deserved a better ending. But everyone in this story was consumed by vengeance and hatred in the end. Ironically everyone other than Abby. Look, I understand many of the complaints given, and why they were given. There is voice to those concerns. But this game, is not a bad game at all. In fact, I’d go as far as to say it’s a good game. But once Joel was killed, so many people just clicked off their ability to care. We knew from the start this was not Joel’s game. In fact, many people speculated that he would be dead, but now that it happened, the game is “terrible” and “a slap in the face to fans of TLOU”. It’s not. If you can just allow yourself to care, it is a good well-done, well-acted story. And it has wonderfully tense gameplay on top of it all. Hell, The Rat-king battle as Abby might be one of my favorite terrifying moments from gaming period. That’s all I’ll say on the matter. Whatever your views are on the game are, all I ask is that you be civil. Respect other’s opinions, listen to one another, and don’t become calloused towards Naughty Dog and all the wonderful people who worked on this game. Have a good day. Expand

Jaw dropping graphics. Amazing level/set design. Cinema quality lighting. Fantastic character modelling and animation, very few uncanny valley moments. A showcase of what Naughty Dog is capable of doing at a hardware platforms end-of-life.

Sound design and music is top notch. The music – as well as being beautiful – is a masterclass in acoustic instrument recording. Sound effects and ambient sounds are nothing but perfect.

The acting is at the highest level, much due to excellent dialog written by Gross and Druckmann.

    The mediocre:
Gameplay mechanics are a little janky sometimes and can feel dated and repetitive. Sneaking is implemented nicely, but you will undoubtably become frustrated by the limited situational awareness caused by tight FoV combined with slow head movement. Shooting mechanics are OK, and is of typical Naughty Dog style – alright for those only playing on console, and at times infuriating for those who mostly play on PC.

The story – there's no denying it. It's sub par. People give it 0/10 because of one single event early in the game, as if they have ownership of the characters, or perhaps a sense of being co-creators since the played the first game. This is called entitlement, and is a real problem in todays society. You have to remember that you are a viewer of another persons creative vision. You where not a part of making the game – you are the audience. That being said; The Last of Us Part 2 has a very strange story. A typical hollywoodesque revenge story with the same old tropes and cliches. All set in a well known nihilistic post apocalypse that seems inevitable for every American writer. Humanity is reduced to a psychopathic lizard brain that can only torture and kill. The Last of Us part 1 managed to tell a fresh story in this standard post apocalyptic setting – a story that resonated emotionally, and managed to hold on to humanity by its last thread. The Last of Us part 2 on the other hand is just a revolving door of hatred and despair. Perhaps it was meant as a study of what would happen if you grew up in such an environment. But it falls through. The main issue with it is that it fails to be believable. It fails to be relatable.

    The bad:
At the end the game fails to resonate emotionally.
It will leave you empty. It will not leave you with questions, it will not leave you in awe like the first game. It will not open up discussions around anything. It will not provide deeper meaning or the chance of interpretation. Theres nothing to analyse. The story and character developments come across as a juvenile, with a high schoolers knowledge of psychology and philosophy. The gameplay has too much focus on loot. vacuuming every corner and every shelf spamming triangle whilst being 30cm away from the wall takes away from being able to enjoy the larger world.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Story is actually really good, except for some pacing issues. I first disliked Abby, but I came to like her over the course of the game. Most people who criticize the game dislike how Joel died, because they think he is the hero of the first game, but those people never understood the first game. Joel isn’t supposed to be a beloved hero, he is at best morally gray and at worst a sympathetic villain who doomed humanity out of him being selfish. Obviously nobody’s right in the game, but if I had to choose I would say it’s Abby, because Joel needlessly murdered her father, who wasn’t really a threat to him, because Joel could have just knocked him out. That’s not to say I hat Joel, but people who think that they destroyed characters from the first game and that Joel is a hero, don’t even understand the story or characters from the first game. Besides people who think Elli should have killed Abby, probably also think that Luke should have killed Vader in "Return if the Jedi" ! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. That's just my opinion. I think either this or cyberpunk 2077 will be the game of the year. It's 100%. The game's graphics are amazing (especially in the rain). I'd rather tell you in advance but I read a lot of walkthroughs and articles about the game. He became inhuman, true to his predecessor, the atmosphere was barely dark. It’s not a zombies game like dead rising (so we fight it out with a chainsaw) but here too you can do the task out loud. Since I don’t have a ps4 so I asked my friend to share his opinion. I also understood one of it ... The story didn't become a big release. However, the way the 2-thread (Elie and Abby's thread meet once) is something brilliant. Just like the gameplay itself. The graphics say it again but something inhuman. Luckily, I avoided the spoilers so every single moment came unexpectedly. Many people say to rewrite the end of the game (or get a DLC like the Left Behind did). The object of the game is to say even the genius. We get Abby and Elie. They both lost a lot. We get the cause and effect of the revenge campaign for both characters. While Abby realizes sooner that this makes no sense, Elie eventually realizes that she has already lost everyone and everything. So it all made no sense. While Elie was completely ruined, Abby found a goal for herself. And his goal is to protect Lew (sorry but I don’t know how to describe it well). I think Elie pardoned Abby because she realized that she wouldn't have a better spiritual world, that Joel could never come back again and that night when Elie didn't forgive Joel but she wanted to start again ... In this world there is neither good nor bad. Everyone acts, throws the threads. Elie eventually gets out of the vicious circle. This game is a perfect ending to this generation. You have to play this game, you have to immerse yourself in the story. I may never try this game but we will remember this game for 100% of the time for a very long time. Thanks to Nauthy Dog for making this masterpiece. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I've never reviewed a game but you gotta start somewhere right.
So, here's the deal. This game is great. It's emotional, it's brutal, it's challenging, and it's incredibly detailed. Guess what, it's 2020 and the game features LGBTQ+ characters? Who would have thought it...anyone that takes offence to this is very narrow minded and doesn't deserve to comment on the game, but that's just my opinion. It shouldn't be up for discussion and I commend Naughty Dog's dedication to include this in such a high profile game. The end.
The story is lengthy and incredibly well thought out. There is another obvious 'controversial' moment of shock near the beginning - Joel's death. Yep, I definitely came across this when these details were leaked and I was devastated, but I didn't read any more into it, so I didn't know the specific details. Playing it for the first time was tough to watch and incredibly emotional. I thought the way in which it was shown was powerful and struck the right balance of violence and emotion, especially seeing it through Ellie's eyes.
This definitely had to happen in order to push the game in a new direction, otherwise it would have just been a retread of the first. I didn't necessarily want to play as Joel again with Ellie by my side - we've been there.
There's a point in the game where you begin to play as new character Abbey. Rather than it being a short segment, you very quickly realise this is gonna be half the game. I didn't connect at first because I struggled to empathise with a character who had just killed Joel. However, as the gameplay went on, I understood what was being done, and what we got was a very padded and relatable character. She isn't massively different from Ellie, it just took time to understand her motives. I think from the point I realised her dad was killed by Joel, I understood why we needed this version of events. This part of the gameplay was needed to steer the game from being a one sided revenge story.
Everything else about the game is fab - the combat is hugely satisfying and I definitely feel like there's more of an option in how to handle a particular encounter. I generally went in all guns blazing, but I like the emphasis on being able to completely sneak past and avoid combat.
The encounters with the infected were terrifying. My first time with the stalkers genuinely scared me. I spent a good 10 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to push forward without screaming out loud. There's also a new member of the infected family which was a surprise. It was tense and exciting and it came at a good point in the game. The visuals are fab. The ability to go off and explore at certain points allows the player to witness scenes and moments that could otherwise be completely missed.
I just loved the game. There are definitely weak points - as much as I love Naughty Dog's approach, I do sometimes find the slower paced elements a little dull. I get that they help us build more human connections with the characters, but sometimes the pacing can be off. Apart from this, they've done it again. The only reason I wanted to post a review was because of all the negative ones I've seen. I don't understand, it baffles me. I realise many are attached to these characters and accepting a new approach is difficult, but I really believe this had to happen to allow part 2 to stand on its own feet. And as I mentioned, the inclusion of LGBTQ+ characters is so important in this day and age, and it should just be as "normal" as any heterosexual characters. THERE SHOULD NOT BE A DISCUSSION ON THIS. DO NOT form your opinion based off of these negative reviews. Play the game with an open mind and you will not be disappointed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

I love everything about this game, gameplay, graphic, characters and also how ballsy they can be On the down note I only feel there’s unnecessary story which is after Ellie has settled down in the farm that should’ve been the ending, the part where she went to California was pretty forceful and instead losing everything in that journey, she lost family, she didn’t have the revenge she wanted to instead saving Abby, she lost the ability of playing guitar that always remind her of Joel, if story was left in her in the farm and make a peace that’s would be a greater ending than it is Expand

The gameplay, art style and graphics are phenomenal! 10/10, the gameplay is better than its predecessor.
The story is okay. I don't particularly like it but I'd rate it neutral, 5/10, because it still works within this world, it does not feel incredibly out-of-place with the setting.
Thus and due to the weight of each aspect to me, the overall rating would be an 8.

What I think after letting it sink in for a couple of days and first writing a negative rating.

Objectively, it is a good game. It just isn't a good experience as in something you really want to experience. And that is really contradicting.
A fair warning to everyone that is currently having a bad time in his life, just don't play it until you feel well and think you can cope with raw anger, sadness, and being heartbroken and disturbed. The game will make you feel bad emotions on a level that I've so far only experienced from real life. The difference here is that books and movies have some distance, which is lost if you are actually playing the character. Those reactions for me were the reason to rate the game bad first, because I rated those feelings. Objectively, and with some distance, and that's hard to do if you are really invested in the story and characters of the first game, it is a good game. The game achieves what it wants to do, it challenges you on an emotional level, and it does it so well that I got mad and broken for doing that to me.
In the end, it's just a game, but for me it's not that easy. The first TLOU is connected to a lot of personal stuff for me, it came in a time where I needed a light at the end of the tunnel, and it was just that.
The second game actually drives you into a tunnel and leaves you without light, at least that's what I felt.
I think it would have been a good idea to use new characters to tell the story, but on the other hand, it wouldn't have had the impact Naughty Dog wanted to achieve.
I also think the marketing should have been clearer about what you have to expect. I know what I have to expect if I go to the theatre to watch Joker. But if you expect an experience like the first game, it hits you like a truck, and I think that's very unfair. It's just too much.
If you are like me, you might not play this game ever again, just because you don't want to go through the experience again. RIP trophies.

    The good:
    - Breathtaking visuals
    - Great level design
    - Excellent world building
    - Amazing music and sound effects
    - Acting and animations are the best I've ever seen in a game
    - Accessability options are very appreciated!

    The mediocre:
    - Gameplay is the same as in the first game, you will still enjoy it though, if you liked it in the first one

    The bad:
    - Too long for what it wants to do
    - Tedious scavenging for pretty unimportant upgrades - this might change with higher difficulties though, I played on normal
    - Some plot holes and unrealistic story parts (would have to spoiler, but I don't mean the stuff everyone is hating on, more like unrealistic "teleports")
    - Some characters feel without depth
    - The game forces you to do things which you might not want to do. The only option is to stop playing. Which is intentional though, and part of the experience. Just be prepared for it. I would have liked an option and player decisions.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For context I’ve played through the original game 6 times. I’d like to say I understand the characters, and I think this sequel did a good job staying true to those characters. A lot of criticism for this game has come in the form of a revolt against the agenda of the creators. Let me remind anyone that played the first one that there were multiple gay characters in that one too, so having them continue to be gay shouldn’t be that shocking to anyone playing the sequel. Joel’s early death caught me off guard and of course I was saddened by it, but his story was pretty much over. He had his entire character arc through the first game, therefore, not much was left to discuss in the sequel. This also allows new characters to be explored.

Despite his early death, he comes back in flashbacks that happen throughout the game. These flashbacks give useful context for the continuing story, and allows two very separate story’s to combine for an exciting climax.

I will say that the game is paced well, although the constant timeline changes with flashbacks and character changes can bog down the story if you aren’t paying close attention. This game also has a habit of quickly killing off main characters. If you blink during some of the deaths you could easily miss them. My biggest complaint is the same complaint as the first game (which I still give a 10/10). Enemies will try to kill you with guns but won’t drop ammo when you take them down, as if they used their last shot just before you finished them off. The voice acting, the acting, the graphics, and the gameplay are all very well done. Gameplay features a few new mechanics for traversing the world, combat, and for puzzles.

As for the developers’ agendas, the complaints are entirely unwarranted. There is no agenda here. They aren’t forcing lgbt values down our throats, there’s just gay characters. Ellie was gay in the first game and obviously continues that into this game. It would make sense that Ellie would find a love interest after 4 years of living in Jackson. There are a couple scenes with Ellie and her girlfriend Dina, but nothing is forced. It is treated the same way all the straight relationships have been in all the other naughty dog games. The antagonist Abby is not trans, she’s just buff. There’s a gym in her base and she works out constantly. Apparently if a girl isn’t entirely feminine then she’s just a dude? There is one sex scene featuring Abby and it lasts for maybe 5 seconds. That 5 second scene has been the crux of most people’s criticisms of this game so feel free to ignore any of those reviews.

This game is well made all around, the original is just so hard to beat. For anyone that really enjoyed the first game, or payed any attention to it, this sequel is worth your time.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Alright, I decided to break my review down in regards as to why I scored this game an 8/10.
To get this out of the way: The unnecessary amount of hate towards the LGBTQ+ representation. Yes, it is in this game, and it is not in any way shoved in your face more than straight counterparts. Trust me, it isn't. A game shouldn't be labeled 'political' because it has two human's in love or because it has a character that's in the wrong body. If you're a grown adult throwing a fit over this: Set the controller down and go educate yourself. Go ask that spoiled liberal niece/nephew or cousin of yours to help you out.
With that out of the way, let me go over the graphics and sounds: Beautiful. Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful, I was blown away by them. There's a specific scene late in the game that made me cry from how it looked.
And the sounds of clickers and other monsters through this game were utterly terrifying. There were moments where I wouldn't notice something until a noise came my way and suddenly I was on my toes trying to track it.
The soundtrack itself is also excellently made, very spooky and haunting, a perfect fit for the tone of this game.
On to the reason why most people hate this game: His death. When the events unfolded, I began crying and didn't stop. For context, I played this game in my freshman year of high school and now completed it at the end of my freshmen year of college. I have grown with these characters and have done at least one play through every year since.
The death of such an influential character hurt my heart, but what people have to remember: He was not a good person. He was barely a good person in Ellie's eyes. He essentially dismantled the only group that brought hope to the world. Watching the way he died was so god awful and could have been done more tastefully, for sure. But the way people tore the game makers apart for this was sort of ridiculous. Have you never seen a main character die before, in any media? These people are in the apocalypse. The people that dealt the final blow were standing in front of the reason the apocalypse continued to happen. I'd be pretty pissed off too.
Now, I understand the hate for Abby completely. She killed the main character. She devastated millions of people. I hated her when I began playing Ellie's story. And then we're forced to play her. And then I understood. Please, don't let those leaks be the only thing that effects how you view a character. I managed to steer clear of most of them, but after playing her character she grew on me and now I'm hopeful for the next chapter of this game being dedicated to her. Controversial? Yes. But damn, if she isn't powerful and such a strong character both emotionally and physically. I loved her.
Ellie's story was also just as powerful and heartbreaking. I cried a lot playing her. Can you tell I'm emotional? She had a very broken and heart wrenching story this time around and at times I had to set the controller down to process what I had just played through. It finally shed light on the pain people hold when placed in these situations.
As for the ending: I really understand why people hate it. I'm not a huge fan of it either. When I entered a certain part I thought the story was wrapping up, but instead it rushed through it. The worst part of the ending for me was when we're forced to fight Abby. Like I said, I enjoyed her story and loved her as a character but even then, it was so painful watching Ellie scream and release all of her emotions as she sliced her up. It was difficult to play, and in no way fun. That seems to be the issue for me: The game makers wanted people to (maybe?) grow attached to Abby and surely not tons of people did, but if that was their goal, why would we have to entire a 5 minute long sequence beating the **** out of her in front of her only reason to live? Awful. They missed the mark on that.
And then obviously the story wraps up on a very open note for Ellie, which makes me unsure if her story is truly over.
My guess? The next game will be about Ellie tracking a doctor down to finally access the cure and Abby will have to escort her or some **** because history repeats itself. But thats for another discussion.
All in all, I recommend this game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
