Pretty cool game. Fun gameplay, nice graphics, interesting story. The pacing gets a little sluggish at some points in the middle, but it has a good conclusion.

Honestly kinda hated at the start because Joel died and lost feeling to play it but the franchise naughty dog never lets anyone have a bad experience they made my childhood because of games like crash and uncharted so I finished it and liked the story obviously the first game is better ( nothing can top that) but doesn’t deserve the hate like everyone is leaving for this game without giving a chance Expand

The game was really spiced up by the demise of Joel. Some vey minor flaws in the game play which do not detract from the overall experience. A really thought provoking story that I have found fresh to this game. Great value for money with 30 hours of game play for me. Some great character interactions that deliver a brilliant story line with twists and turns along the way. I am jumping straight back in and playing the game for a second time now. Love it. This game is the best for 2020 so far. It will take a lot to better this game. I so hope we have a part 3 at some point in the future. Expand

Amazing game. One of the first games that I ever had an emotional experience with. The gameplay was great and the world was as beautiful as ever. The story did well to show the state of the world that the characters live and that all actions have consequences.

Before I give my honest review of the game I'd like to say that there is a whole range of scores you could give this game other than 0 or 10. Quite honestly anyone giving this game a 0 is just being ridiculous and petty. I get it, I loved the first one too and Ellie is a beloved character but c'mon guys. So much love was put into this game and other than the story, which I will get into in a minute, it's nearly flawless. The graphics are a 10, the sound design is a 10, the music is haunting, the voice acting is top notch...how can anyone possibly take a 0 score seriously? You don't like the story, fine, that's a valid opinion, but it's so childish to brigade the entire team at Naughty Dog because you disagree with the writers.
So as I said before, from a technical aspect this is among the best of this console generation and arguably toeing the line of the next. I am sure that there will be a PS5 edition that will blow us all away but I find it hard to criticize the quality of this game. Two minor nit-picks: Ellie's wet hair was too shiny to be believed and I was constantly jumping at the sound of my own footsteps at the barest touch of the stick.
The game play was also incredible but truly not much different then the first installment. Again, it's hard to find any fault in this area and would likely be attributed to my ineptitude anyway. I had fun throughout the entire game and played long stretches at a time until I finished up on the third day. I can count the number of games that keep me that engaged on one hand. It's fun and exciting and challenging enough on normal difficulty without being tedious.
Now, let's finally talk about the story. If I were to play this game without ever having played the first one and having an emotional connection to the characters going in, I probably would be just fine with it. Did it feel a bit heavy handed? Yes it did. Did that bother me? Not a bit. This is (obviously) a game about the futility of revenge, the ignorance of blind allegiance to a cause, and the real horror of violence. However, we all have played the first one or else we wouldn't be here right? I definitely had a problem with Ellie's moral decay. To an extent, I accepted the reasoning behind her rage but much like Dina's reactions as the game progressed, it became too much to understand. Eventually I grew to dislike her character and THAT was a huge disappointment as a fan of the first game. How could our beloved Ellie ever choose hate over love? WHY would you make her do that? This is almost certainly the crux of all the negative reviews.
If I take a step back from that glaring distraction, I will say that the protagonists were very interesting although maybe not as much as the cannibals from the first game. The Wolves were the stereotypical para-military group hungry for power, nothing too exciting. The Scars were pretty cool actually but I questioned their motivation as well, it seems like they had a pretty good thing going for them on their island. Would have liked to know more about them, especially the religion and their messiah. Maybe there is a DLC planned for this.
So, there ya have it. It's sole detractor is a big one and I would probably give it an 6 or 7 based on the that alone. It's a big story, and certainly engaging, but the way they did Ellie really let the fans down. However, the game as a whole is easily a solid 8.5 because of how well made it is; I rounded up to a 9 to offset the inflated (and undeserved) number of low scores. It's beautiful and horrible and punches you in the gut like you expect. The infected make your skin crawl and every basement I entered had my stomach in knots. I absolutely, unequivocally recommend it. You will be missing out if you listen to all the idiots down voting it like spoiled children.

It's definitely not a game for everyone because it tries to do something completely different from every game (that I've seen at least) that it's out there. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. wow, this game is unlike anything I've ever played, it takes a concept that's been done a million times, revenge, and makes does it so well. at the beginning of the game, the character Abby kills Joel, you view this as an unforgivable act but as the story progressives you see Ellie become what she vowed to kill, she shoots a pregnant woman and does some pretty unforgivable things when taking into consideration Abby's story, speaking off Abby's story, once again ND knocks it out of the park, this character who does an unforgivable thing is humansed and while that isn't special in it's self, the fact that the game kinda makes you root for her is incredible, you start to seriously care about her and lev's relationship. the supportig charecters are all great dina, Jesse, lev, yara, Tommy and owen. now this game doesn't pull its punches, in the end most of the characters are dead. a lot of people have an issue with this, i do not, the way i see it, every death is a consequence, Jesse for instance only dies because Ellie killed owen and Mel, yara died because lev wanted to reason with his mom, every death moves the story forward in a forfilling way. for all the positives of this game, there are a few negatives, one is that at points in the game, the gameplay became stale and more of a chore than actual fun, there were points were i would fall threw a floor and be angry because i just wanted to progress the story not go through more corridors with a few infected. my other negative is the stories pacing, i think the way the game is structured could have been much better, you play as Ellie for 3 days, the tension is rising... and then your put back to the beginning... yeah i didn't like that, i would have much preferred playing one day as Ellie, then one day as Abby. this would mean the stakes were always rising and you could more easily draw parrels between there stories, plus you wouldn't get sick of playing as Abby, while i love her character there were points were i felt like i wanted a bit more of ellie. despite those flaws, i have to give this game a 9, its an incredible experience, and i know i wont win any popularity contests by saying this, my personal game of the year, assuming cyberpunk doesnt blow my exspectaions out of the water Expand

Don’t get me wrong, it was a game that was hard to put down and I do believe it’s a good game, but good is as far as I can go in describing it. It’s far from a masterpiece on any level. Game is a 7.6 out of 10

    Sound and Visuals: 10

This is probably the one part of the game that everyone can universally agree was nailed. The environments were phenomenal, amazing looking flora with great graphical fidelity. Lush forests, verdant cities, dark and impending tunnels, honestly you could spend so much of the game just looking at the environments and not get tired. The use of lighting was incredible, especially in those darker environments. The visual brutality of combat was stunning in how visceral it was. The game even offers character models you can unlock so you can truly marvel at every facet of the infected, and just how much detail was put into the characters. Sound wise everything sounded fantastic, it was more of the same from the first but that’a far from a negative. Every sound really added some extra depth to the brutality of each swing. Gameplay: 7

So this one has to be broken up and examined for each aspect. Survival/Horror aspects, Combat, and Traversal/Puzzles.

It’s very much a more refined The Last of Us gameplay. If you didn’t like that you won’t like this. The addition of being able to go prone and dodge help open up new ways to approach your combat. The survival aspect and that feeling of terror when it came to the infected was pretty much stripped away in this one. Infected became more of an obstacle to overcome than a fear inducing enemy. The game constantly forces you to ditch efforts at stealth which kind of takes away your freedom of gameplay. However the world is much more open than the previous one. In addition the locations provided various ways to approach a combat scenario, which helps keep the fights from feeling to stagnant. Traversal was pretty decent with some decent semi-open world areas, but exploring outside of these areas rarely felt rewarding. In addition I felt there was just too much ammo available to ever really worry about, same with parts for craftable items. Puzzles were pretty minor and were neither a positive or a negative for the game. The controls are still rather clunky like the first one. (Sorry had to cut a lot of detail to make the word count)

    Story: 6

Now, i’m not going to go too indepth in the story, as to not spoil anything, but to put it very simply: It was a 25hour long story that should have been 13hours long. At least 8 hours should have been removed and summarized into a 2 hour long segment AT MOST, (the rest could have been worked into a DLC that would be optional and released after launch) and the last two hours of the game shouldn’t have been included at all. They could have rewrote one segment only slightly, and the last two hours wouldn’t have even needed to take place. The game strives to tell a story of revenge, but drags the story in an attempt to expose you to both sides. The story is not dark, it doesn’t tackle dark and horrific themes, it’s just bleak. The game even teases a happy ending which shocks you due to the fact that it’s so bleak, just to rip it away from you for no real reason. To be fair, there are also TONS of moments where the character chemistry was so good that I couldn’t help but smile. Some really wonderful interactions between the characters and adorable moments. ESPECIALLY in the flashbacks. I understand what Naughty Dog was trying to do, and can appreciated the story for what it is, but it’s execution was far from good. The first half of the game I couldn’t put it down because i wanted to know what would happen next, but the second half I couldn’t put it down because I just wanted to get to the ending. I wholeheartedly believe that if they changed a large portion of the second half, and released it as future DLC, and fixed the ending, the game’s story would be an 8-8.5/10 alone and the game would have been around a 9 overall. It would have been a much more concise story without 3-4 pointless and unnecessary subplots. I will say that I have NO issues with how they decided to go about the game. No issues with how they handled characters, and found them and their paths to be a very natural progression of the story. A lot of the complaints are from fans that are mad about this, and they were unfounded. The characters were enjoyable So yeah, overall I sit at about a 7.6/10 for the game. I enjoyed it for what it was, but it certainly could have been done better.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First of all: I can understand that people dislike the Game!

I finished the game today and for me ist is a masterpiece! Here is why:

Ellie, Ellie, Ellie! That Girl is so badass! i really enjoyed here seeking for revenge and here romance with Dina it all makes here so human (maybe more then some gamers nowadays can handle?)
I hated to see Joel dying that early in the Game but thats the only thing i really dislike. Ok, maybe i wanted to jump off the roof with abby when i was forced to play her in the second half of the Game but that is what makes the Game so awesome. You have to get over that anger and try to understand what she did (btw i still hate her). It really broke my heart when i had to fight and nearly kill Ellie with her but i still felt glad that Ellie spared her life in the very End. She finally was able to make a cut and move on. I really hope they develop a 3rd Game and Ellie finds back to Dina and JJ, they are both her family and the only way she finds love and peace in the End.

If you want a game that really gives you unforgetable Memorys and feelings this one is a must-buy.
For me the best Single Player experience since years.

They did something here no other video game has been able to...and if you don't look at it as if it's a video game, and instead a movie you will have a blast of a time! I do think, the 'coincidence' with joel could have been written better...which is why i feel the hate is justified, especially if you are attached to joel. but i think people are putting way too much of a political overtone on this...it's a great game...could just use a little bit better writting for what they were trying to do. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that knew it was going to be hard to swallow. It knew that killing the main character from the first game in its opening hours was going to infuriate people. That people would be so terribly angry that he was crippled and beaten to death with a golf club.

“That’s not how you treat the damn hero of the story!”

That’s the point. This game wants to show you just how horrible its world is. How there aren’t heroes, there are people surviving and dying. What makes Joel special? The fact that you connected to him so well in the first one? The fact that he lost his real daughter at the beginning of the outbreak and that’s sad? The fact that he loves Ellie like a daughter And it helped heal his brokenness? So what? Tough **** That doesn’t give him plot armor. He’s a man that made enemies and those enemies caught up to it.

That’s not to say I wasn’t hurt when it happened. That I didn’t feel a little heartbreak watching someone that I also connected with so much back in the first game (especially being able to project on to him having become a father pretty recently at the time) get belittled and murdered in front of who was effectively his daughter. It **** SUCKED and I wanted to kill Abby for it. BUT that’s the POINT! I felt how Ellie felt (though obviously not to the same extent since he’s just a video game character) and I wanted revenge!

The scene afterward when Ellie stops by Joel’s house one last time before heading out on her revenge mission had me tearing up my living room. When she put her face in his jacket and breathed in his scent one last time...chills and tears. But it also put me in the right mindset for the game to follow. It’s sad, it’s depressing, it’s HEAVY. But it’ powerful too. Just like the first game, you follow a character who is broken, makes selfish decisions and causes pain to a lot of people, but from THEIR perspective it’s the right thing to do. There is no easy answer, it’s not simple “I’m the good guy, they are the bad guy” and it makes you really stop and think about everything from a much more mature and nuanced way.

And that’s just the STORY! To me the most important part of a game simply because I love single player story driven experiences but this is a game after all and it doesn’t sit well with me to only review the story.

The gameplay is very signature Naughty Dog and perfectly in line with the spirit of the first game. By that I mean the com at is intense, brutal, and sometimes claustrophobic. It’s also not perfect. I can’t really point out what specifically about the combat in Naughty Dog games that doesn’t feel QUITE right but I think most people (even mega fans) know what I’m talking about. You have a blast during the combat, don’t get me wrong, but the actual gunplay is outclassed by other games. Not a deal breaker, maybe not everyone agrees but that’s my two cents.

Graphics get a 10/10 from me. What more can I say than the game says for itself. The lush forest environments and overgrown cityscapes pop and are the most readily apparent example of course but even the drab, damp indoor areas lit only by natural light (in most cases) managed to amaze. This is maybe even MORE impressive because of how easily these areas could look flat and uninteresting. It takes a lot of work to simulate indirect lighting on a system that can’t do ray tracing but they manage to do it with amazing technical skill and talent.

What I’m saying it this game really is every bit what the reviewers say it is. Don’t believe the crap about paid-for reviews and people sucking up to a Sony and Naughty Dog. Experience it for yourself. If you don’t like it because you don’t agree with the story direction or what have you then that’s fine. Your opinion is valid and I don’t knock you for it. If you never cared about the game to begin with I don’t expect to change your mind with this. Just please don’t buy into the hate that spewed out after the leaks. It’s just isn’t fair to yourself more than anyone else.

But there are some details in the story that I didn't like, like being forced to play half the game with a character other than Ellie. I don't think any of us wanted to play with Abby since she is the person who killed Joel and we have no attachment to her and we also want her to pay for it. In addition to the game, it lacks a very important part: it allows us to make decisions on our own, such as giving a specific answer in a moment of conversation or making the decision to kill a character or let him live. Or that at least the game has two alternate endings, one in which Ellie dies at the hands of Abby and the other in which Ellie kills Abby and returns with Dina to the farm and can already live in peace because she avenged Joel.

The tension and suspens you get i don't think i ever felt in a game. The emotional turnoil is amazing. I had to take like 5 min brakes just to recover mentally sometimes. A big complaint i read is the ending and I have to say out of all the endings I imagined that may have been the happiest I could've imagined, especially for a game like this.

The narrative is gripping, some really powerful moments, and a game I couldn’t put down even though it was really hard to play because it’s so gruesome.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. More of the same as the original minus some awkward control issues which is ideal. Can be a bit repetitive at times but the story is sound. It deftly goes into the grey area between good and evil and the adage "an eye for an eye..." flows throughout. The fact they managed to put me on team Abby is quite a feat since Ellie is a fan favourite. Some have been critical of the choice to kill off Joel, however it follows perfectly from the original story. What he did was not something a good man should walk away from and it plays well into how Ellie then goes on a bloody rampage since he plays as her father figure. The ending was convoluted but effective. The addition of another random group of bad guys was an odd one and tbh I'd have enjoyed more gameplay in california. The themes of there being no safe havens in the apocalypse weren't very well developed but I guess that wasn't the overall thesis. I've heard comments about an lgbtq agenda which is absurd. If having characters who happen to be trans or lesbian is an issue to some I hope they have a nice cellar to live in so they'll spare us from their bigotry. Game was worth the wait. Good stuff. The attention to detail is great, with the enemies you defeat calling out each others names adding extra realism. The knockback you experience when you get shot makes every shot feel more impactful and keeps you from wildly rushing enemies. The two separate but intersecting storylines made for an interesting storytelling device, but could have been executed better. I found myself rushing through the second storyline because I wanted to know how the cliffhanger I was left with concluded. Would have worked much better if the gameplay alternated evenly between the two characters, as opposed to all at once one at a time. Still a positive, challenging experience overall. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly this game is getting a bad rep because people think the main protagonists on anything are untouchable and this game shows that's not true.

I love Joel but I understood the events that happened needed to because for all the good he made he also did a ton of bad things and sadly he had to pay for it. The characters in this game are great and they did a great job with them. The gameplay is just as great if not better than the first game.

Now for the story. While I agree that they could have done a better job at presenting the story there's little that can be critiqued about the quality. On one side we have Ellie who is hurting and is blind with rage and vengeance and in the other side we have Abby who was out for vengace for the death of her father. Just as Ellie is doing. What I think hurts the narrative is the constant flashbacks and cliffhangers left on pause for hours while you play some backstory. Although those moments of flashback do provide you with all the missing pieces of the puzzle they sometimes come at bad times.

This game shows the other side to every story on movies and games. What happen to the other side when the protagonist goes on a rampage killing everyone? Those characters have families and friends who love them. Do you think that all those Fireflies you killed just suddenly appeared out of nowhere? That they didn't grow up and have friends? They they didn't adopt or bring children to this world? And not just fireflies, the soldiers, the cannibals, everyone you kill has someone who cares for them.

I have to give major props to Naughty Dog and all the amazing people that brought this amazing story all the way from The Last of Us to The Last of Us 2, you did an amazing job. To my knowledge no other developer has had the guts to kill your favorite character off and then have you play as the killer only to beat the living hell out of the other favorite character. I felt grossed out while doing that but I saw the brilliance of it and I truly commend you guys for it. This series will forever hold a special place in my heart. Thank you Naughty Dog.

The Last of Us Part 2 isn’t just an important story about revenge, it’s a story about the cyclical nature of revenge itself. Naughty Dog does something that most companies would be scared to do. It removes choice, and for better or for worse, you are there for a ride and you can’t change what happens and to whom, no matter if you want to or not. This is bold move in the day and age of freedom, choice and selection.

Ellie’s journey isn’t one for the faint of heart, her journey is gruesome, vile and heartbreaking. She is a one woman wrecking crew and she wants to stop at nothing to get back a piece of what was stolen from her. Traveling from the safety of their hometown in Jackson to Seattle, all the way to Santa Barbara she will face off against new and inspired threats, like the WLF (Washington Liberation Front) who use modern weapons and explosives, and the Seraphites who are a primitivist cult that use Bows and Melee weapons for the most part. These two are at war, and unfortunately you are in the middle of it as you make your way through Seattle’s downtown. Both of these factions have ideas that conflict throughout the game, and it’s shown beautifully through optional dialogue that the characters have with one another. Even the collection of some very interesting artifacts, adds detail to an already very well developed world.

It showcases the best visuals of any game to date on the PS4 alongside probably the best sound design of any game, of any generation, period. Gun shots are so ferocious, footsteps so crisp, the wind and rain so intense, that you forget this is all game. Gustavo Santaolalla returns to score again, and it hits all of the right marks. The soundtrack just builds up tension in all of the right moments, making those hairs rise and your skin crawls when you hear the clickers in the distance.

It also shows sometimes a little ingenuity goes a long way, especially with the controls and their (ND) decision to add a jump and prone button giving more layers to some of the best and most enjoyable level designs in recent memory. Nothing seems like its cut and paste, where every new area feels different and original throughout the game. It lasts for around 20 – 25 hours, depending on how much exploration you do and I recommend exploring everything. This is a game that rewards it. There are Safes that have lots of ammo/upgrades where you need to find the passcode to access it. The notes that are scattered throughout the area sometimes hint or give those passcodes and it’s a small but very rewarding minor objective to do.

This is a game that should be played, regardless if you agree with the story decisions or not because it’s something that won’t be forgotten soon. Controversy is what made The Last of Us’ ending so remarkable and this game is no different.

    9/10

Originally, I had given the game an 8/10, because of the technical masterpiece that it is, but its story lacked the same oomph that the original had. After my second playthrough I have realized that every single fight with other humans is optional. You can escape and avoid everyone throughout the game (with the exception of the infected), which also changes how you view the ending, in I would say, a more positive way. This freedom of becoming the Ellie you want her to be (either a stone cold killer or a pacifist) also changes your outlook on who she was to begin with. This freedom makes this game that extra point higher, because you can look at these options as greater than the sum of its parts. I personally look forward to what I hope is next for Naughty Dog, The Last of Us: Part 3.

ND chose to be bold when they could have made full fan-service that would surely pleased more players. Instead, they decided to make us question everything and everyone, to make us do things we might not have wanted to do (not in a "the game is bad" way, you'll understand while playing).
The levels of emotions in this Part II is equal if not even superior than Part I but most of them are completely different. While Part I was about love, attachment, finding someone etc. Part II is about hatred, fear, revenge, anger... Some will like it, others won't.

The graphics are probably the best I've seen yet, it's the first time we've come so close to photo-realism, and yes, I've played RDR2 on PC 4K, GOW, Detroit... Uncharted 4 was already impressive for its time, they did it again.
Gameplay: It's clearly not a revolution. Just a good evolution from Part I. Everything is simple, fluid, fast. Effective.
The music is incredible, maybe even better overall than the first game. Gustavo Santaolalla is always masterful and moving, and Mac Quayle's action compositions serve the game perfectly.

Negative points: We can regret the absence of a duo as powerful as Joel/Ellie from the first one, a few lengths in the second part of the game, and a small passage towards the end which displeased me but it's only a really personal opinion.

I find the review-bombing on this game (and the others by the way) quite a pity. Especially when there are either no arguments, or when the person gives his opinion about the leaks and speaks as if he really played the game, like for example "Abby is trans-gender" when ABSOLUTELY NOT. And I really saw reviews talking about it as if it's a fact or as if this game is LGBT propaganda when it's not at all, and believe me I'm the first one to say it when it's the case for other games/movies. There was no forcing from the devs on that side. Unless seeing a lesbian couple shocks you that much?

To conclude, 9/10. And some people are surprised that a lot of people who loved the first one can love this one. Well let me tell you: The Last of Us is my favourite game. The Last of Us Part II is now my second favourite.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that's hard to hate but difficult to love.

The Last of Us Part II is a phenomenal game, there is no doubt about, but yet it still manages to be somewhat disappointing. Mechanically speaking, the game has no faults. As much as the director would claim to the contrary, the game is exactly what it sets out not to be: fun. In fact it's probably one of the most "fun" games I've played in a long time. Uncharted 4 was a game made fun via the ability to just throw up a hook and swing around, jumping and taking down enemies from above and running-and-gunning your way to the next goal. The Last of Us Part II is made fun via dodging enemy attacks, crawling under an abandoned truck and enjoying the sweet thrill of a well-placed silenced bullet in the head of an unsuspecting enemy.

The majority of my disillusion occurs within some minor technicalities with the games structure and narrative decisions. During the first day in Seattle, Ellie and Dina come across 2-3 large open areas. The first area, if you're working at trying to explore everything, can take as long as 2 hours. The next area is more about combat but features 6 or 7 large groups of around 6 enemies each within close proximity in a downtown area, which again, can take many hours to get through if you're attempting to go about it stealthy. The issue is that in being tasked to find gas, after a few hours you almost completely forget why you even needed gas in the first place. And the issue is that areas like these never really show up again. The areas certainly never reach this scope again but really I think these areas are the games weakest and never needed to be more open in the first place.

This leads into the game's biggest issue: Abby. Naughty Dog is perhaps notorious for designing massive set pieces and building a story around them. In this game though, it appears that situation has reversed and surely that should be a good thing, but I don't think it works here. The game suffers from lack of excitement and any set pieces that do feature tend to be given to Abby. It would appear that a game marketed as Ellie's game fails to give her an interesting story in comparison to Abby and a lot of it is forgettable. Ellie gets some amazing flashbacks with Joel that are the highlights of the game, but Abby has an amazing present in the game. Ellie is more likeable but Abby has more story.

When the 2016 reveal trailer was released, I was 17 finishing my final year at school and I spent almost every day in the library with Shawn James' "Through the Valley" on repeat. When Troy Baker said that the game would be divisive, I thought that it would be Joel's death that would make it so. I was wrong. It was simply the execution of the second half of the game. Playing the enemy is a concept that could work, and one that is certainly a great idea, but its not so well executed. There are moments where we feel for Abby, we laugh with her and understand her hardships but ultimately when it comes to it, no matter how humanised Abby is or demonised Ellie is, we are hot wired to side with Ellie no matter what. It is difficult at times to understand character motivations Despite what other reviews say about the supporting characters and how bland they are, they are honestly amazing characters that carry the game more than the two ladies at its helm, especially Dina.

Perhaps the game would have worked better if it wasn't sliced in half, if the main conflict took place inside the 3 days it focuses on instead of the final conflict being a year later turning Ellie into a Clementine copycat complete with missing fingers, mom haircut and child. It would have been more fun for Ellie to visit the burning Seraphite island or fight "The Rat King", but again these are given to Abby. When we get to that final showdown, despite all the time we spent with Abby, the journey there with Ellie warrants the satisfaction of Abby's death. Instead of killing her when she had the chance, our hero decides she wants some epic showdown for some reason to fuel her ego in which really she lost in the end (goodbye fingers), only to allow Abby to sail away into the sunset.
Is the story awful? No. Is it unsatisfying? Mostly. Is it realistic? I'm unsure. Is it worth experiencing anyway? Absolutely.
This may have come across as a negative review but I don't intend it to be really, as a videogame it is a phenomenal game that actually is FUN. I really wanted to love it but I couldn't help but be disheartened by the second half. And the second half could have been justified by a better ending. Why did I give it a 9/10? Because it's not awful. It deserves the praise its got. How videogames are reviewed is typically a 7 is 'average'. I do believe it's above average in design, gameplay and accessibility so, 9. The ending is what knocks it down and that Ellie literally just became Clementine 2.0. Also maybe more cutscenes.

The game is a rollercoaster of emotions. A lot of things and story beats in the first half do not really make sense and it was really frustrating to see what was going on. Until the credits rolled the game threw so many curveballs at me and went from the highest highs to the lowest lows (literally and figuratively). I think after seeing it through the two core though that are stuck we me are 01 the game is masterclass of managing your emotions and revealing information to you that retrospectively changes the meaning of the entire narrative. 02 this feels very much like Naughty Dog moved on from making game movies and instead gave us an entire television season of the Last of Us. There is just so much going on.

I would have given this a 10/10 (good graphics, audio blablabla), but the fact that after half of the game the narrative finally clicks and goes into full swing is an amazing achievement when looking at the whole picture, but a really tough time to get through when there are just so many other games that can grab your attention away from this.

Please don’t listen to the haters here because they just thought they going to get some thing that they wanted and they didn’t and some of those ratings came like an hour after the game was released so it doesn’t even make sense, the game is like 25 hours at least so I wouldn’t trust that. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful visuals, great audio, impressive voice acting... just absolutely stunning. Fighting was as good if not better than the first game, although it felt like the listening ability was a lot less reliable this time around. It also became a running joke for us that every single door would be locked and every single ledge/floor would collapse, it become tedious after a while. The beginning of Abby’s stretch of the game was infuriatingly boring; I didn’t care about her or her friends or the WLF organization at all. It only picked up after the Scars and the children were introduced because we were finally getting new information and interesting characters. I must admit that this second section clearly did what it set out to do: by the end of Abby’s gameplay, I didn’t want her to die anymore—which is saying something since I REALLY wanted to kill her for the entire first half of the game. Yara and Lev really saved her as a character because she suddenly reminded me of Joel. Let’s just say that by the final fight, I was extremely emotional. I honestly wouldn’t change the ending at all. Also, cheers for exploring how queer people would exist in this new world; each person is clearly a character who is queer instead of “The Queer Character^tm” that some creators use for brownie points. Overall, an amazing game that made me very depressed and then gave me just enough hope to keep going. Expand

This game will make you angry. Why wouldn't it? Playing the role of the one person who you hate the most is utterly infuriating.

I don't forgive Abby for what she's done, but I can understand it. I can understand and sympathize with every character in this game. No one is perfect, including us. I believe that the people rating this poorly are not (yet) willing to see how it's telling a story of loss and despair, something that will make you look at yourself and see how an eye for an eye blinds the world. It's a sickening thing to see your greatest adversary as something more than what you want them to be. It's sickening to see them smile, laugh, and crack jokes. You don't want them to pet dogs, you don't want them to have friends and goals, you don't even want them to pet dogs. Along with everyone, I absolutely hated Abby and playing with her. However, after meeting Lev and Yara, I had a change of heart- as did Abby. There's no way to be alright with the entire situation. I didn't like her but I respected her actions with everything that's happened. Mel already said it; "You were always an **** (to Abby)." It's only through the journey with Lev and Yara that she redeemed herself in my eyes.

Everyone is just living their own life. I hope you, dear reader, can see it this way too. If TLOU was reversed with Ellie in Abby's shoes, I believe everyone would be okay with her murdering the **** out of whoever killed Joel in the first game. Everyone wants revenge in this game, and it's proven to be futile.

Ellie's struggle with Joel's death deals with loss and forgiveness. Forgiving Joel isn't hard to do after the events of Part I. Forgiving herself for not being able to reconcile with Joel is another layer on top of her guilt... what fuels her in a quest of vengeance. It ultimately consumed everything.

I won't give it a 10 because of how stressing the story was; it's going to be hard to replay this, not gonna lie.

Almost everyone agrees that technical part of this game is top notch, story though is different story as it maybe is the most divisive and controversial among fandom across all favourite franchise. Everyone has their opinions, lets respect that.
I personally like this game, it’s one of the most unique story-telling experiences i had in my life. I understand why certain people hate this game, and it’s the same reason why i love it.
I hate Abby for joel’s death , i want to avenge his death so badly that i killed all WLF soldier in the most brutal ways. But then in the second half of the game, We got to control Abby, this murderer that killed our beloved characters. I dislike this part of the game at first, but when i experience what she felt and her lifes, i understand that no one is villain in this game. There’s no hero or bad guy in this game, everyone has it’s own motivation, people they cared about.
Abby, is just another human being, like us.
The ending is good also, Ellie didnt get to avenge Abby. She know Joel will never want Ellie to become the person he was after Sarah death, he wants Ellie to live happily with her lover, do things that she love to do, she deserves a better life than becoming killing machine. Even if Ellie did kill Abby, some people will eventually try to find her out and avenge her, potentially putting Dina and JJ , or even tommy in danger. She knows Joel wouldnt want that, so she let Abby go.
Story itself is good, but the way story is told can be better in my opinion.
If there’s a part3 , lets just hope Ellie is treated well, that kid suffers too much…..

Expand

I didn't always agree with ND's chosen narrative paths (one specifically angered me), but I continued to give the new direction a chance and im glad I did. The story this time around isn't focused on one side, but rather two. It's a game about how far people will go to make the hurt they have inside of them stop, and at what cost to their humanity. The game centers on topics like these and really nails home the violent acts you have to commit and the person you have to be to achieve your goals (to the point that I tried to avoid all the conflict I could). It's not a black and white story, but very complex with human nature at the forefront. The writing here is some of the best in the industry, followed by the stunning visuals, immersive gameplay and sound design. There is a sense of weight to every aspect really helping to build the world. The game is quite the controversy surrounding the LGBTQ and I honestly never had a problem with what little there is in it. Despite what people are saying, it's not about these topics, nor does it shove them down the players throat. These pre existing characters are supposed to be seen as vulnerable everyday people just trying to survive in a world that they don't fully understand. It never asks the player to take a stance, but rather asks the player to see them as they are, people trying to live. The real problem is people not being able to do this. This is a world that truly feels alive, along with the characters in it. Sometimes the decision that key characters make can be confusing, but it's a human story and people do questionable things. Like the story, humans are complicated. The ending is lacking some context and I wish they had summed it up better, but it left me with tears in my eyes and a sense of wonder. I can't wait to see where the series goes next, depending on if a sequel is warranted based on the hit it's currently taking from the gaming community. While I may not agree with it, I can understand why some people may not be happy with the directions taken here. They were very bold and certainly subverted expectations, a common thing in media nowadays, but unlike so many other, I felt it worked here. At the end of the day I'm happy with it and my final scoring is a 9.5/10. Expand

The Last Of Us Part II.
