People are actually crying about playing with women.
People are actually crying that Joel died after he damned the whole world by taking maybe the only vaccine in the world.

This game is a masterpiece, I had a blast playing it.
The game-play is smooth, the graphics are amazing, the mechanics are great, and like a lot of games the story is not perfect but it is good.
I'm not going to give it 10/10 because there are some minor flaws, but the game is amazing nonetheless.

Stunning visuals, phenominal gameplay, and topnotch worldbuilding. Combat and enemies were expanded enough to keep things fresh and challenging. Puzzles feel organic, tough and unique. And the hidden dialogue, and scattered upgrades and scrap kept exploration rewarding.

While the original set an extraordinarily high bar to meet in it's storytelling, TLOU2 still manages to hold its own.

While I don't think it's quite as polished as the original, I feel that the general initial reception has been tainted by leaks and many went in looking to rush it through looking for excuses to hate it (if they played it themselves at all.) Which is a damned shame. Give the story a chance, it's nowhere near as bad as the bombers are making it out to be.

What an experience! Better than any movie I have ever watched and probably top 3 story lines of any game I have ever played. Better than any movie I have ever watched and probably top 3 story lines of any game I have ever played. Short review: Game play has not changed much from the last game, Graphics are top notch, Gore is off the chart, and the storyline is enthralling! Long review: I rarely pay full price for any game but going of the reputation of the previous title and its DLC, I pre-ordered this the night before the release to download overnight. From the very beginning you are thrown right back into the first game. The feeling of despair and disconnection are experienced as Joel describes to his brother the events that took place on his journey across the country. How he took something not only from the world but from Ellie herself. Something that gave her a purpose in life, that gave her a drive to continue as everyone else died around her. As the game goes on, we see them both come to grips with their past while trying to survive in a world with just a shred of light as they make their new home in Jackson.
I don't want to give too much else away, but the game runs you through almost every human emotion there is to be felt. You see the perspective of your enemies throughout the game’s multiple bloody conflicts (I do mean bloody). There is gore everywhere as you furiously try to stave off getting eaten alive, evade maniacs that want to make you a sacrifice, or crazies who want to put you into slavery as an infected fighting gladiator. As the credits rolled and the awesome acoustic score played, I sat reminiscing for 20 minutes on the experience of it all. There is something here for everyone. A story of a daughter and her benefactor turned father figure, a brother trying to help is own blood navigate through his second chance, and a daughter coming to grips with loss. I have heard some say the game is “pandering” to a larger audience. There is a strong LGBT and feminine presence in the game that in my opinion is woven into the story well and does not distract from the experience. Having played the first games DLC Left Behind, I already knew what to expect from Ellie’s character going into this one. I did very much like to see the strong presence of Asian characters throughout the game as well, something I have not often seen in American based story lines.
The only disappointment I had with the game is I felt the infected where kind of 3rd class advisories. Runners where no threat, clickers were barely a challenge even when alerted as you could just run away to a safe distance to shoot, and bosses such as the bloated where very few. Yet with even this there are two or three great fights with the infected culminating with what i will say is the "showdown" in the garage. All in all the fighting system as a whole could use just a little update to make it more dynamic. With all this being said, go into the game with an open mind, an extra pair of pants, and the will to survive. You will not be disappointed!

If you have already decided to hate this game before even playing it, maybe this review will sum up some info on what this game is trying to represent.
There were several things to look at when reviewing, but just to make it short I focused on story, gameplay, and scenery.
    • Story (8/10) The story is very well done. But to compare, which A LOT of people have, to the first game would be a major mistake. Part 1 and part 2 are both vastly different games in their style of tone, development, and character. Part 1 focuses on love, care, and grief; 3 concepts that require, quite literally, a whole game to develop. Concepts that make you love the characters you are with more and more with every step they take from Boston all the way to Salt Lake City (all true fans should know what that means). That type of detail requires calming and gradual build-up, how else are we going to develop care love for those characters? You cannot; it is a story arc that is very hard to master, which is what makes Last of Us 1 one of the best UNIQUE games of all time.
o Part 2, again in contrast to part 1, is centered mainly on anger, vengeance, and hate, 3 concepts that do NOT require development to the same level that part 1 concepts did. I am not saying that is a bad thing at all, I am simply saying that the tone that is represented throughout the whole game stems upon those particular concepts, and naughty dog does a great job showing how this flows throughout the whole story. This can be seen and understood by just relating the characters actions and motives to ourselves.
o When a person is angry they do not think straight, they let their frustration and rage get the better of them, and before you know it you are making mistakes that you would never have thought to do if you were thinking rationally, that is EXACTLY how part 2 plays out, and it is done so freaking well because these horrible decisions made by the characters is so rapid, so sudden, and so surprising. It is done so well to the point that it can anger players just for seeing what happened, and knowing how it is going to follow up throughout the game (which happened to me a few times, but that is exactly the point.) That is what makes this story so intense, so energetic, and so much fun.
o Now of course one argument you may give is: why would I care about such vengeful characters? Why feel attached to characters that are so hateful? Well that is sort of the dilemma and the challenge. Throughout the game you are thinking to yourself whether you want to root for the characters from beginning to end or wish them dead. The story gives you reasons to both love and hate these characters. Their actions can be argued to be justified and not justified, which makes the tone of the game so convoluted, and goes to show that anger, hate, and vengeance are never the answer. This at first will drive gamers crazy, you may even wonder if it is worth rooting for anyone at all, heck I struggled finding reasons to root for these characters, but that is what made me love it so much. The AGENDA of this game, from what I see, is that vengeance isn’t the answer, and you could end up losing everything if it consumes you.
o Also, a big thing that I think this game does a VERY good job with is closing out on one of the biggest cliffhangers ever made in gaming, and through it develop new story arcs for other characters, which inherently creates our new story in part 2.
o Again though, DO NOT expect the same type of feelings and tone you get throughout part 1 in part 2, you’ll be IMMENSLY frustrated and disappointed for the entire game if you do.

    • Gameplay (7/10) The gameplay can honestly be summed up with one word, and one word only: STEALTHY. Now that may seem like a weird word to use, but really there is no other way to mention the game play. You have to think on your feet with the scarce supplies that is available in order to take out the enemies that are coming at you from every possible direction. I personally really liked the game play, because I am a very big fan of stealth, but for some it can get very repetitive and tedious (which is understandable). But hey if you want to go in guns blazing at enemies, make sure you have a solid one hit kill weapon handy

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Incredible. Truly, an enjoyment to me. The story was gripping, real, and honest. Very much on par with the first in that regard. The Last of Us felt like a story, but also about people. The ending was definitely a scope of people and the decisions they make, for better or worse. Last of Us Part II takes that scope and puts it everywhere. Life is just people and the decisions they make, for better or worse. They just let it all happen right in front of you and leave you to sort out where you sit among it all and that's an insightful challenge. I enjoyed just sitting back at the credits and thinking, "wow, how do I feel about all this?" My only true critique is that the story narrative organically ends long before the game does. I understand that putting the Santa Barbara section in later as a DLC would have been damning to public regard, and that this will mostly not have another installment so ending it here was the only option. It just felt like overtime, but I still found the final scene with Joel to be very powerful and am overall satisfied.

The combat was similar enough for me to regain my bearings after spending years away from the first and I found that inspiring in a sense of, "Ok. I remember the flow now, I'm back in this." Jumping from one character to another with different equipment kept things fresh as a way of problem solving from a different angle.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Despite having script holes (like any story), having subplots that could have been better handled, and a narrative that perhaps is not as clear as in TLOU part 1. This game really challenged me many times, it puts us in very wild situations and It shows us a reality where no one is bad or good, a reality that hurts. Joel is a great example: we empathize with him, but he is not someone we should aspire to. He is someone who could not forget a painful past and that led him to make that decision at the end of the first game. In TLOU 2 he pays for his actions just like Abby losing her friends and Ellie losing them too. But ellie was the only one to realize that in the end and she chooses to overcome that past by leaving the guitar behind. Ellie's guitar and joel's watch symbolize the same, a wound, a past, the loss of a loved one and ellie, unlike joel, allows herself to forget, but mainly ... forgive herself and invite us to watch ellie and ask us if this trip to avenge joel was really worth it. Was it worth watching Ellie suffer just to satisfy us? Was it worth it for her to lose fingers? Was it worth avenging someone who didn't deserve it? maybe yes maybe not. but for me, it wasn't worth it.

Maybe the revenge story is the most cliche concept there is, but like TLOU part 1, they use those cliche concepts to create something fresh. And to say that TLOU 2 is just a simplistic and superficial revenge story would be stupid. It would be just as stupid for someone to say that TLOU part 1 is game about love and nothing else or treat Berserk's manga as a simple hate story with nothing more to do with content.

TLOU part 2 really came as a surprise to me, naughty dog took a big risk creating this story and I admire them for having that bravery ... good job naughty dog.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. At first I was angry at Abby for killing Joel, and then I see Abby's reasoning for her actions... and I just, couldn't help but to feel bad for her. Joel's past finally came back to bite him. I get that: "Abby should get her consequences! She gets away with killing Joel and gets everything she wants!" What I have to say to that is this: Joel, Tommy and Ellie kill like 99% of the people Abby cared about, and plus Abby also has a kid, Lev, to look after. If you know Joel and Ellie then you'd know they wouldn't kill someone and leave a kid hopeless and in danger because their protector/parent is dead. Gameplay: 10/10 - I just had so much fun, the tension, the suprises, the bad guys having names (got kinda annoying, but if you sneak around it won't be annoying as much.)

Story: 9/10 - there's so much plot twists that make me not know what's going on. Like: "Wait, should I still be angry at Abby? Yes, she killed Joel... but then again Joel did kill like 80% of the people Abby loved." **** like that have me on my feet and I live for it. I love when writers can have my emotions all over the place. Characters: 8/10. I'd rate it higher, but there wasn't enough character background on the characters that help with Abby in the beginning of the game. I also wanna see more of Ellie and Dina, Joel's character development was **** great. It's like Ellie is his daughter and he wasn't afraid to show he loves her, but still scared to say it with his own words. If that makes sense.

The ending hits hard. It's definitely something to really think about before saying it's good. There's not much I wanna say, I guess this is where I say this then, go pick up a copy! If $80 CAD is too much to spend right now then wait until a discount comes up for the game. The story will still be here no matter what.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Game will probably be one of my favorite games of 2020. Now I'm not saying this game is better than the first game. But, it is still really Amazing. Ellie story is done in my opinion a well done way. Everything from the flashback to the ending made sense to me. Now the only critic I had for this game was that we play as Abby. To me I understand why we play as Abby because there are two sides to every coin but, I wish her story would have been cut down to make room for Ellie's story instead. Or better yet make her story a cutscene based story happening while Ellie story is happening. Another thing I see people complaining about is the ending and I get that but it makes sense. During the prologue Joel sings to Ellie before giving her the guitar. He states that " If I ever were to lose you. I'd surely lose myself." To me that is exactly what happened to Ellie. We see at the beginning of the story that Ellie is just trying to live a normal life the best she can. But, when Joel dies that world is shattered. When she deals with all the people that helped kill Joel you see she starts to break down because of some of the actions she took. Then we finally track down Abby again where we have our last fight. WHen she is about to kill Abby I believe when she sees Joel she realises that if she countinuess she will lose herself. She will be no better than Abby was. Risking her friends lives just to get revenge. When she returns to Her and Dinas farm, Dina and JJ are not there. She even tries to play the song Joel sang to her during the prologue but she is unable to since she lost her ring and pinky finger to Abby in their last fight. She truly did lose herself but she came back from it. Then we see Ellie put her guitar down and we see her walking away from the house from the window hopefully heading back to Jackson to possibly reunite with Dina and JJ. It makes sense that Ellie after everything finally realises that she did lose herself and now she is on a path to regain the person she once was. This ending to me made sense and was actually a fitting end to the story. This game was not perfect but, I don't believe it should receive all the hate it's getting. If you loved the first game I Highly Recommend that you get this game as well. This is definitely another top notch game by NaughtyDog. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A great, if polarizing game. The Last of Us 2 does not have a bad story, but rather an extremely risky one. The game-play is really good survival-horror style action. Enemies are lethal and it'll always be better to avoid them than engage in direct combat. Resources are limited with ammo conservation being a major game play factor. Each of the characters also have very different tools that set them apart from each other. It can get somewhat repetitive at times but if you enjoy the game-play then it shouldn't be too much of an issue. The game also allows you to pace yourself. In one section of the game, as Ellie, You're taken off a linear path and given free reign to explore a region of Seattle. If you find the game play boring, The game allows you to reduce the number of encounters by rushing to your goal. But taking the time to explore the amazing environments allows to find rewards that you may have missed otherwise. There's also a robust suite of accessibility and difficulty options if you want to breeze through encounters to get to the story.

The story takes a bold risk with the death of Joel. It plants its focus solely on Ellie, and later, takes a deep look into the character and history of Abby. This isn't to say that the story doesn't show the father-daughter relationship moments that many fans were hoping for, but they're regulated to flashbacks as Joel dies early in the game. The story isn't bad as it deeply explores the characters and their relationships. It even pulls away from a pivotal moment for a ten-hour detour to explore the antagonist. People who wanted the father-daughter journey from the first game will be disappointed, but those who can appreciate the new direction of the game will most likely enjoy it. The ending, while good and moving, doesn't deliver the cathartic revenge that many are looking for.

I absolutely loved this game, sure the ending leaves you numb due to its unexpected nature but the graphics and gameplay are absolutely amazing. Once you start to understand the meaning behind the story as it explores the true impacts of revenge the story and the way you progress makes a lot more sense.

Again I loved this game and I don’t really think it can be compared to the first game, as this game aims to cover topics far different to the first in a much grittier and bleak setting. This game has had such a big impact upon me and will do for some time to come. I finished it over a month ago, but I still can’t stop thinking about it!

The characters are really well written, even if some aren’t as likeable as the first game. The dynamics between certain characters aren’t as strong as Joel and Ellie in the first game, but they are still enjoyable to watch and learn about. The flashbacks sprinkled throughout the game were what really sold the game to me. The first two hours of the game really set the mood for the rest of the game, because a lot of the game was painful to play through at points. And surprisingly I actually enjoyed playing as Abby and seeing the human sides of the people that you were after throughout the game. Even though I felt like as a player I spent a little bit too much time playing as Abby. Overall the game is not as bad as it was made out to be, by leaks and by the reviews, and the “agenda” that almost every negative review mentions isn’t as prominent as they cry about and is not a large factor in the game. The trans character is briefly touched on in one sentence and that’s all that’s mentioned of it, even though it was hinted at during gameplay. Also not a Naughty Dog dick rider, just loved the game.

Of course the story was not as good as the first game, but it was never going to be. I enjoyed playing as Abby, and while they tried to make you feel bad for some of the members of the WLF I only sympathized with one. That was Owen, I think he was genuinely a good guy. He's really the only one that didn't want to kill Ellie after they kill Joel. While the story was a somewhat basic revenge tale, that did not stop me from immensely enjoying it. The part where you play as Abby and go to rescue Lev from the island is the most visually pleasing part of the game to me. The only complaint that I have is that the part in Santa Barbara was not really necessary, it was fun but not needed. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Acá, no tanto.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has a good story telling path. Some complain about the linear gameplay but it is easier then the first game.

    Spoilers:
Some people complain about it being SJW agenda; but there isn't very much. There is a lesbian couple that is tye main character, then you have a transgender side-character near tye end of the game. People assume from pre-release "leaks" that the protagonist is also transgender but the game does not confirm nor deny that. Based on my opinion, it would be impossible for the main protagonist to be transgender in the world they live in with no medical labs or medicine to take for transition.
I don't like how the game ended. Im left questioning the reason for the "third part" and what lessons were to gain from it. I plan on playing a second time thoroughly as my initial run I had sprinted through all the enemy AI.

However I think it was brilliant to allow us to play as the "Vilian." I personally was super upset by all the leaks and rumors, pre-release. Before even playing I already hated this Abby character. Upon being able to play as her, to really witness and feel her story as we would with the other main character, I truly began to feel for her. Many people are so upset about the drama before the game was released, some maybe even going as far as to not give this game a chance or even give it a poor review out of spite. I however am a true gamer and have a deep love for this game and the first. I give it a 9 simply because the darkness in the game is a little much for people who do not understand things such as mental health issues or for those who do suffer from them. I have personally played and own hundreds of video games across multiple platforms, and The Last of Us part 2 is one of the few that has truly moved me. The scenery in this game is beautiful. It is highly detailed, mechanically consistent, and a testament to how hard they worked.

For this reason alone, this game does not deserve a one star. It is a good game. Perhaps, based on this alone, it deserves at least 3-stars.

What is left to be judged is the story. If you're reading this, I highly recommend you play the game yourself no matter what you read here and form your own opinion. Many people are leaving bad reviews based on an early event that leaves feeling players betrayed or "shoved SJW ****

Naturally, players will be angry and leave bad reviews for this, but again this game does not deserve that. The circumstances that happen in-game are believable and real. The story is just as real as the first game. It is surprising, frustrating, depressing, fun, and so much more.

Having actually purchased and just a couple hours ago finished the game I can say it is a truly interesting story, no it wasn’t a ‘fun’ game, it tells a horrible story, of loss, revenge, grief, trauma. It forces you to evaluate good and bad, no one person, organisation, or community in the game can be defined as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ this games gives you perspective into that and allows you to see that the world of the last of us isn’t black and white, it’s complex, and blurry. In video games your version of what happens is always subjective, if you really had a think about it in almost any video game you might realise that that fictional character you just killed had a family. The last of us confronts that fact, shows the other sides to the key players in the game and ultimately allows you to empathise with them. A quote I love from the book Ender’s Game applies here. "In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves.” Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is very hard to take in. I see a part of myself in Ellie, and it feels very f-ing good to see a main gay character in an AAA game. You could blab all you want about it being a propaganda, but after all, the only ,,major“ sex scene involved straight people. Why does it have to be propaganda when they show something that should be normal? This game doesn’t have to be a ,,representation” of the LGBTQ+ community, it should be something normal that could happen in any game/movie/tv show, because these people exist too, you know....
More about the game now - It’s very violent which makes it even a little uncomfortable at some times. It’s not only a sequel, it’s a continuation of Ellie’s and Joel’s story. They both suffer from the decisions they have made, but Ellie is extremely affected by the event from the first game - Joel taking away the only opportunity, that could safe the human race. And although Joel dies (which was extremely sad and it ripped my heart out, despite the fact that I have already seen the spoiler), when we think about it - he crossed a lot of people and he could’ve died even earlier. The fact that Ellie and Joel made some kind of peace before his death, gave Ellie a reason to be even more violent. We get to see the story from Abby’s eyes and that gave us another perspective of the cycle of violence. This game is about Ellie and Joel, yes, but it is also about the cruel world that they live in - everyone has made bad choices and no one is a hero. But they all have suffered the consequences of their violent and cruel actions, this is why the ending was so satisfying - Ellie finally decided to let go and end this cycle.

It’s a great game, but the people think the characters are super humans or something but NO! They are humans that get angry and make mistakes, it’s a great experience with more or less downsides but definitely it DOSNT deserve a 3 of score.
Play the game, understand what & why the things happen, then make a review.

This game is absolutely amazing. Naughty Dog really knows how to write a griping story. Even a character I hated at the beginning I ended up rooting for in the end. The review bombing it's getting is entirely undeserved. Those who are review bombing the game are doing so for one reason an hour in and are crying like little babies. Granted I didnt feel the same love as the first LOU but man I thought this was epic. You have to play this game yourself to see if you like the story and yes its a story, its a story that will make you feel sad, happy, want revenge, mad that revenge was not served and empathy for the characters you wanted the revenge against.

Abby is easy to hate and then you see her story and you see shes no different then the characters you cheer for, the game has not good vs bad and that triggers people, I can understand not liking the story but its a 6-7 under the most critical views so not sure where the 0s come from even ET on ATari is not a 0

Let me begin this review by saying yes, I understand parts of the story can be controversial to others and can be disappointing with the choices in which naughty dog decided to go with TLOU part 2. But let me say that even with the ideal story changes, this game was one of the greatest PlayStation exclusive games that ive played since the original TLOU.
Let me start by saying that the story was shocking and compelling, and for me at times very questionable. Specifically with playing as the character Abby, for with not understanding who she is or what he purpose compromises of, it throws a curve in our feelings towards what the idea of the story will be like. But with this addition of characters, it begins to show not just one side, but both sides of the story. Since this game half way will cut to Abbys beginning of the story when Ellie enters Seattle. It shows the struggle of both these characters attempt to survive through the deserted streets of Washington Seattle, in which two groups are at war over control of seattle, being the Washington Liberation Front known as the wolves , and the seraphites known as the scars. One group is a broken down branch of fireflies that have taken a new name for themselves, being more militarized with weaponry, vehicles, and Dogs. While the other is a cult like villagers that believe in the beliefs of Their prophets, and the ways of the new world and removing the old world, they take advantage of the environment, using guns and mainly bows and arrows. Ellie begins a quest to hunt down Abby due to her actions in the beginning of the game. Throughout this story, you will watch as drastic actions are taken in order to survive in which will change the characters forever.
For game play, the gun play, stealth, and crafting have been taken to a whole new level with crafting, being an easier and better way to advance your weaponry with you no longer needing to craft holsters but instead finding them within search areas that can lead you to finding guns and training manuals. Manuals are used in this game as a form of learning new skill branches in which could help you craft items more efficiently, enhance your stealth abilities, upgrade your weapon sway and so on. upgrading weaponry now visually shows on weaponry in which now finding parts to upgrade are mainly focused towards only needing to upgrade weapons. Crafting items has been taken to a whole new level with being able to create new items that can help you efficiently in the battlefield against both the infected and human enemies, advancing melee weapons now work in a more efficient way by removing shiv doors in which now gives you a chance to upgrade your weapons more often since hand to hand combat has become a more implemented part of combat. With the removal of shiv doors, this now allows players to be able to enter loot rooms without the use of shivs, but instead will have to find a hidden way into the room. In my opinion I think this is a better addition to the game since while shivs are still an existing tool in this game, are now more used to help with quick stealth kills and to get out of grabs by infected enemies.
Within the beginning levels of this game, it allows you to explore areas within the downtown seattle area in order to find Ellies beginning items. in which you are able to open a map and find hidden areas that contain loot within question mark areas on your map, in which you will be able to find hits that can lead you to new areas. This is the only time that TLOU uses an open map system, this part can be related to what Metro Exodus does with its maps, while it may be not exactly open world, it does use the same idea of searching areas to find tools and and equipment to help you in your adventure.
Combat in TLOU is fully insane, gun fights feel a lot more intense and smooth with cross hairs staying the same as the first game. Body damage to enemies has become more visible with head shots now showing a lot more damage, such as holes in heads and blown off jaws. hand to hand combat becomes violent when items are thrown in the mix, especially since with there being more melee weapons to pick up, it also allows you to upgrade every melee weapon you find.
In the end, I highly think that while many dislike this game due to its story and for some reason its ideal of lesbians being apart of a game being a problem, the game on its own is phenomenal, its game play gets fully overlooked and frankly, if you're someone who doesn't finish a game and writes a review about the game being bad, your'e not just ignorant, but your'e also making yourself look stupid. Finish something before you judge it, because it can contain a lot of potential ideas for future games.

Yes, I know this story feels like a lame plot to excuse the point of a sequel but im taking into the cinsideration the amount of detail and effort into this game for a 9. The graphics, are amazing, and it runs so well on the base ps4. Im a pc gamer and WISH we had optimization like what they do. Now for my favorite part of the game, is the gameplay. It is one of the best controlled third person games I have ever played, there is no delay in movement like in gta 5 and the gameplay is so damn smooth, the mechanics and movement animations are flawless and fall right into place right after each other. I usually would never say this about a naughty dog but omg I come back to this game JUST for the gameplay. Its amazing and looks amazing. Expand

An interesting and thought-provoking entry into Naughty Dog's long line of fantastic games, The Last of Us Part II dares to challenge traditional notions of good-versus-bad, and raises questions of moral relativism and the role of video games as an art form.

To get it out of the way; yes, you play a large amount of the game as Abby, the largely-despised ex-firefly from *that* major story leak. This section begins with a cut-to-black following a cliffhanger, followed by a 'three days earlier.' Personally, I, like a lot of players, was initially very bothered by this change. This is The Last of Us! it's the story of Joel and Ellie! Once this point is reached, you are well aware so far that Abby is, by-and-large, the absolute bad-guy of the tale. But then you explore Abby's story. You get to see that, from Abby's point of view, she was answering the fundamental question of the ending to the first game. And, with an open mind, you start to consider whether or not she is right.

During the Abby section, we have flashbacks of her time as a firefly with her father in Salt Lake City. Yes, you know what is about to happen. Ellie, who is hunting Abby for killing her adoptive father, is now contrasted against Abby; hunting the man who selfishly killed her own father. A complex dilemma.

Still being unsure about accepting Abby as a protagonist, I found this section of the game flew by as I was trying to get back to Ellie as soon as possible. And yet, I found myself absolutely enthralled. Abby takes it upon herself to show that there can be a large degree of ambiguity in a character's morality. Yes, she killed Joel in cold blood, but here she is risking her life to save two young runaways from a deadly and dogmatic cult. As you continue Abby's segment, the relationship between Abby and one of these runaways (Lev) begins to develop in a microcosmic parallel of Joel and Ellie's relationship.

Soon after, we reach the same cliffhanger that was played previously from the point of view of Ellie. A fight, characterised by sneaking in the dark not unlike the fight with David from Part I, ensues, culminating in Abby holding the pregnant Dina in a precarious position, ready to slice her throat in revenge for Ellie's actions. She seems to take little issue with the morality of this action, which is a stark contrast from earlier in the story, where Ellie became distraught after realising that she had killed a pregnant woman. Yet Abby decides to be the bigger person. Helped in part by Lev's effect on her, Abby leaves Ellie to live, but reminds her that she will die if Abby sees her again.

Here, the player is left with a question; and by now, Ellie is aware of what Joel did to Abby. Here, the player is asked whether or not it is just to consider a fool's crusade of revenge, and if they can accept letting it go.

The next we see Ellie suggests that she chose the latter. We see the farmhouse that Dina mentioned earlier in the story, and an Uncharted 4-esque storybook epilogue. Dina has had the baby, and everything seems happy. Only, Ellie soon collapses in a PTSD-hallucination of Joel's death. After calming down and accepting that this might be the thorn that Naughty Dog leave in our sides for the ending, the epilogue yet continues. Tommy is here now, with news of Abby's location. Everything points to Ellie letting it go, leaving it behind.

But again, the epilogue doesn't end. Ellie leaves for Santa Barbara with players shouting at their screens for her to let it go.

And we're Abby again. She appears as an adoptive mother for Lev, and the relationship here is perhaps the most obvious parallel between Abby and Joel, Lev and Ellie. The two of them are taken prisoner soon after learning that the fireflies are still around (threequel potential? HBO series?), and we soon learn that Ellie is on their trail. Ellie catches up with Abby and frees her from her captors. We are led to believe that perhaps, Ellie might let it go. But she puts her blade to Lev's throat. She needs to finish this.

The fight is a raw and emotional battle. Both Abby and myself are in the same frame of mind; I don't want to do this. Abby bites off her fingers in the struggle; Ellie gets the upper hand and begins drowning Abby. But it is now that Ellie sees Abby and Lev as I do. She gets a flash of Joel behind her eyes, which we later see in full detail; a conversation between Joel and Ellie. Joel asserts that he would save Ellie again if he were given the chance. Ellie realises that she has become the villain, and makes the difficult but ultimately *right* decision to let Abby and Lev go. She knows now that holding on to an existence of hate that Joel himself would never have allowed is all she has become.

She returns to the farmhouse to find that Dina has left. Ellie's possessions are all that remains. The fight with Abby took away her ability to play guitar, her major connection with Joel. And she wordlessly conveys that is wasn't worth it.

I have read some of the reviews posted on this site before writing this and can see some valid points from some people. Getting obvious points out of the way, the game looks incredible. Particularly the emotions on the characters faces, it is clear that some effort went into this and It pays dividends. I have read some reviews that give the game a score of zero, based purely on the fact that Ellie is gay, and that Naughty dog is pushing some sort of SJW agenda on us. Personally I feel that these reviews should be disqualified immediately because of pure bigotry. Ellie's sexuality makes complete sense with her 'tom-boy' character and I don’t feel it is a stretch to say that she is gay.

The main attraction with the game is the story. It initially comes off as a standard revenge tale but quickly establishes itself as a study on what revenge does to a person and the people around you. I have to say, this is probably the most violent game I have ever played. I have played games with more blood and guts, but the realism of the violence in this game is really confronting. I do however feel that this lends itself to the theme of violence and revenge in establishing the tone. My only real complaint with the game’s story is its length. This is a long game and towards the last third of the game, I was keen to just see the rest of the story and not keep doing the sneaking and stabbing that is basically the only way to play the game on higher difficulties. Despite this complaint, if you cut out any significant part of the story, it would lose its emotional gravity.

The game plays much like the 1st, this is really obvious if you just finished playing the 1st in anticipation of this game. What is great is that it maintains the gut-wrenching tension of the first game. There are probably half a dozen times I remember my heart absolutely racing with dread and the feeling like I was being hunted and only just surviving. The rest of the game is very repetitive by the last third of the game, you could make the argument that this was intentional by Naughty Dog to add to the game’s themes, but from a gameplay perspective, the game lost its novelty by the last quarter of the story.

I do feel that the game is still very solid. There is criticism of the games ending feeling pointless and that all the violence and killing was, in the end, pointless and destructive for nothing. I think this was exactly the effect the developers were after. For me, the story ends in a manner that drives home the point of the game and leaves its characters in a place where no sequel is required. Despite my criticism of the game, the overall story makes up for its shortcomings. It, by all means, should be experienced and enjoyed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is not bad. It's a terrific game and had many things I felt went over people's heads. I saw company reviews and was a little skeptical which is why I waited until I finished the game to see how it really is. I thought the story was phenomenal but I would still change things if given the chance. For starters, Joel's death was too early in my opinion. I understand that it was thing that moved the story along but it was pretty early in the game. I think that playing as Abby was a great choice and a bold decision that was pretty brave of them. People get mad at this decision because they don't want to show sympathy to the woman that killed Joel. I dont think that the point was to show sympathy , but to make you understand where she is coming from. The only reason it's not a 10 from me is because I did feel that the story dragged at points of the game. But I loved it overall and would definitely recommend fp anyone, as long as they play the original first. Expand
