The game is pure perfection, even more mature than the first one!
The best survival post-apocalyptic game so far. All the hater reviews lack reason
and empathy and their arguments are ridiculous to say the least. Don't let them ruin your
experience of this game. I almost did by listening to so many negative complains.
But then I played the game and I realized it was all nonsense.

What a shame the way they ruined a great game. Instead of sticking with the formula we all loved, they decided it was more important to teach us some social lessons.

I believe the story is just as great as in the first one. I don't buy into the whole Naughty Dog pushing a political agenda. I don't believe they mislead anyone with the game trailers. The character development with both playable characters were great. I hope to be able to see them more in upcoming installments. Great job Naughty Dog. Excellent game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Im making this critics not just for the last of us Part 2 but for the way metacritic handle things like this .
Metacritic has banned with good reason some review who were not really well constructed or even having no critics except it's lgbt and this critics have no place to be about this game .
But the truth is the game is terrible,no characters enjoyable or even remakable for there place in this story, they even been forget in the games with no mention at all. (except joel, ellie and MAINLY Abby but for the wrong reason) the game is extremely beautiful but that's motsly it, the gameplay is the same wich will not be a big problem if not that people waited 7 long years have mostly the same thing that the first last of us .
And the game Story is boring, gratuitous in violence and has nothing to offer to people except Shock value content and a morality were the mindset of the character change for the scenario is really low for the what naughty dog have made in the past.
And the game seem to have been downgrade when we confront the E3 version and to been inferior againts red dead redemption 2 (in graphic and story) zelda breath of the wild (gameplay and engine) and ESPECIALY againt spec ops the line (for violence and the meaning of his story) or even having no choice in the game (like the walking dead telltale series or dishonored 2) is real some miss opportunity for the game to be even better than it's predecesor .
But the fact that metacritic censored some well review and has been blocking new negative review makes it revolting (with the gaming journalist score of course) some really really sad thing for the great studio that was naughty dog and killing have well writen, loved character in this game with no reason except shock value and killing other npc with no consequence make it a really miss opportunity for naughty dog and the fact that manny great dev have been quiting the studio while the game was been made and the other were forced to to making crunch time for the game to make it deadlines is sad . i really congrats the people who were making graphism, music and character appareance but im not giving my congrats for the people who have made the story, who has falsely make their advertissing over joel and the people who were forced or pay to make great review for the game or they were losing their position.
For ending this critics i have to say that naughty dog has truly lost the meaning of ''fun'' in video games (like neil druckmann has said) and that whatever their next project is, they have to really working about their employee, their method for making games, and their games because it is that or even with the ''sucess'' or the last of us part 2 they will be like bethesda or bioware.
Some great studio who lost their passion and originality with too much ego or stress or maybe both of those thing,a great story have been cancel for a very poor story with just a meaningless morality in their own story . (even the last jedi has better quality than this when the movie has just 2h32 hour and the game has 35 hours ,really mediocre )
    i would have give a 5 or a 3 but i give it a 1.
metacritic is a good site but those kinds of game hurt their name and some good review user are extremely strange to be honest if we have to ban the negative critics with no real meaning we have to ban even the good critics with no real meaning .
And the game is not even making good lgbt representation in gaming life is strange, mass effect (until andromeda) and even the dlc the last of us left behind were real and memorable .
And when a true great games make with love and really meaning and choices (im talking about cyberpunk 2077) and that games journalist will give a greater score than this game it will just confirm that they are more honest with a new game made of his own than a game that privilige and the great standing that was the last of us part 1.
Play lisa the painful a great dark story about consequence, violence and the meaning of life after the worst has been experienced. the game is maybe old (15 december 2014) and has not the beauty of the graphism of the Last of us 2 but the gameplay is more challenging, the story is making you depressed and sad but doesnt let you feel empty like nothing was important and forced but that even after the worst we alway can rise up .Play it it's make a better job letting you sad, scare and depressed than the whole story of the last of us 2

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The gameplay and design is stellar, with some of the most detailed mechanics and concepts I have seen for a game. There are so many small but extremely detailed systems running in this game that will blow you away once you realize they are there. However, the actual core mechanics of combat, exploration, and resource management do not remain fun for the entire course of the game and start going stale by the end.

The game has some serious pacing issues, by the 2/3rds mark or so you are going to be pretty bored and sick of the game. The gameplay does not stay fresh and the story fails to keep you interested due to poor layout.

I strongly disagree with all of the people that are jumping to one extreme or the other over this game. Everyone seems to want to call it a 10 or a 0. When it hardly deserves either of those scores. Issues with characters derive not from them being out of character, but the game not showing the time and actions that drove characters to think or act the way they do, alienating the player. The way characters act IS logical, but it is not conveyed correctly to the player.

The game also does a terrible job making you CARE about characters that it wants you to. It takes too long to build on some, and stops bothering to build up others. Characters you are just starting to care about will suddenly be dropped from the story for 10+ hours, show back up at the end and suddenly you are supposed to still care about them in all of this. Meanwhile, people you have barely seen at all will suddenly be in a position or situation you are MEANT to empathize with when at best you MIGHT be able to sympathize.

To conclude, the story was a GREAT idea with terrible execution that alienates people in a series that relied heavily on its story, and the gameplay grows too stale to keep people entertained over this long and overplayed plot. Also, the devs lied about several things certain people had concerns over like dog killing. Which doesn't matter to me, but the fact that they lied to the people really pisses me off.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

The Last of Us series is a testament to how imagination can become reality. The first game exceeded my expectations as the cliche zombie world transformed into a profound experience where our “hero” of the story wasn’t meant to be the poster boy for moral reasoning. He was flawed like all of us and capable of making selfish decisions when the world needed selflessness. He was so believable that he became a father figure to all players. The second game was so unbelievably good in terms of gameplay, story, characters, etc. I didn’t feel like I was playing a game in a fictional world but watching a movie of what humans are capable of in regards to love and hate. It made me question our sense of good versus evil and how both can be misconstructed as the righteous path. While I agree with others that it was hard to find Abby’s character likable, I thought her story was the perfect opportunity in showcasing your enemies weaknesses and strengths and how it shapes a person. In that way, I understood her character better and who Ellie was going up against. My only critic is the Santa Barbra chapter that felt out of place (the Rattlers felt like a rushed plotline) and a reason to bring the characters back together again. Overall I commend Naughty Dog for taking a risk and making a game that I don’t believe was overall focused on revenge but understanding how love can make us do terrible things. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Gameplay mechanics are enjoyable, but I feel like crafting could’ve been built on a bit more. While I can understand what they were trying to accomplish in terms of trying to get different perspectives across, they wound up making Ellie a very unlikeable character bu the end of the story. They also didn’t make any of the new characters stand out enough to be enjoyed. Even if they’d given us more time with them, because of the way they were introduced to us I already had a disdain for them. Had they brought the story to us differently, and let us get to know them and their motivations better before the terrible act, then maybe I’d have been more open to empathize with them. Because the story tends to make you want to walk away from it for awhile at points, I can’t justify the roughly 25 hour run time. The game is held up by fun, solid gameplay, and the voice acting, despite the writing doing it’s best to want to make you think about things, it results in unlikeable, or dull characters that I don’t care to spend another 25 hours with. All in all it’s a solid game, but not one I care to play through again. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a Masterpiece, and it gets there not by being a traditional narrative, not by giving the player what they want. It gets there by being bold, and having something to say. Those who aren't willing to feel a truly nuanced empathy for characters who have wronged them, to relinquish the self are going to misattribute this game as somehow lesser. This 25 hour long epic is not about "revenge" it's about Trauma and how our selfish notions of revenge, retribution, and hatred only feed into our collective trauma as well as the personal.

This story isn't lazy, or bad, it's actively eschewing the lazy tropes and bad writing that's been done over and over. The plot is framed as a revenge story but the story is not, and I guarantee that if you're willing to step beside yourself and feel raw, intense feelings of regret, loss, and a sense of conflict so deep it forces you to put the controller down for a few hours, you're going to have a story that treats you like an adult willing to feel complex emotions, and hold conflicting ideas.

If you however want to be reminded of how fun things were before games had something to say, or if you want a pleasant time playing through a game that holds your hand or intends to leave you in awe, this isn't the game for you. It's not interested in escapism, it's not interested in clear story telling tropes and cliches, it's not interested in good vs evil, it's interested in Human suffering, how we all feel it, how we perpetuate it, and how the momentary releases we seek out to "end" our suffering only deepens it in ourselves and others.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. They totally lost the plot with this game, a severe disappointment. You spend more time playing as Abby (the enemy) than playing as Ellie. Seems they had no story ideas so they had you play the story from to sides. They might have thought that was clever but nobody cares about Abby & the Scars. It was supposed to at least be Eliie's adventure, but they failed on that. The story (if you can find one) is full of plot holes & useless cutscenes. The fact that they spent years writing this steaming pile is just mind boggling. The ending is lame & I'd be surprised if they make a followup to this as they screwed the story up so badly that there is hardly any way to rectify it. Expand

Could have been 10/10, but the pacing was a nightmare. Tried to hard to be profound and ended up being very cliche and robotic. Characterization was nowhere to be found. they abandoned the linearity that was so essential to making the first game a success in exchange for a nightmarish timeline that has zero pattern or consistency. I cannot imagine why they concluded this was necessary. ItCould have been 10/10, but the pacing was a nightmare. Tried to hard to be profound and ended up being very cliche and robotic. I cannot imagine why they concluded this was necessary. It leaves the story feeling very unpolished. This is why so many people feel it did not hit right. The pacing does so many disservices to the story it is trying to tell, which I'm not sure is a good one at that. The first game was so much better. I'm glad I got that satisfaction of Ellie learning the truth, but apart from that, story wise I ultimately was left feeling pretty much nothing. Sad that it took them all this time and they **** up something that shouldn't have been that hard to do well. The worst part is I feel like they will always think they are right and gamers' criticisms are illegitimate. This mentality is part of the problem leading to this dismal game. Oh well. The story is dramatic and heart felted, people were actually not ready for it. And the game does a fine job using that. You will feel a wide variety of emotions during the game, from hate, love, hope, despair, sadness and even frustration. But it's this emotional rollercoaster that makes the storytelling stand out. Maybe you won’t feel so good bu playing a certain character in the game and the things the forces you to do, but don’t lose the point. Gameplay is very fun the prone and all the dogs really do add a nice layer of tension the combat is very very visceral and I love it almost mortal Kombat level and I absolutely love the dodging mechanic. However if u didn't like previous naughty dog combat systems you not gonna like this one....... probably. To sum it up loved elllie part hated everything else..... Story wise. Game is fun tho give it a try only if you enjoy the GAMEPLAY of the previous game if you are looking for a deep connection between character like Ellie and Joel look elsewhere Expand

I'm a mature gamer and took a HUGE hiatus from gaming after the masterpiece that was 'The Ocarina of Time'. 'The Last of Us' and the 'Uncharted' series were my gateway back to gaming and 'The Last of Us II' has now cemented itself as what I would consider the crowning achievement for what is possible with the art form that is game design. This game deserves a place on the mantel amongst all that we consider holy within the entertainment industry. That includes the best of modern literature, cinema, television, music...the amount of sheer ingenuity, creativity, obsessive attention to detail and love that went into the production of this game I can only begin to imagine. What is even harder to imagine is how anything like this could ever be accomplished again. I felt the same ache I did last night when I completed my first run-through of 'The Last of Us II' that I did when I finished the pioneering achievement that was 'The Ocarina of Time'. This art form deserves to be lauded and regarded at the same level as the rest of the entertainment media we consume, specifically because of games like these. That said, there truly has never been a game with the depth of storytelling, character development, sound design, gameplay, music performance and composition, than what has been achieved here with 'The Last of Us II'. Truly.

If you were moved by anything that Naughty Dog has accomplished in the past, especially the characters they've brought to life through 'The Last of Us', don't hesitate to buy and play this game. Regardless of whether you agree with the decisions they've made with the introductions, fates and farewells of their beloved characters or particular plot elements, don't let ideology or politics prevent you from experiencing this masterpiece. It is just that.

If it helps those who are still on the fence here is a list of games not yet mentioned that I have also thoroughly enjoyed in no particular order:

    - Bloodborne
    - God of War (reboot)
    - Horizon Zero Dawn
    - Red Dead Redemption (I and II)
    - Inside
    - NieR: Automata
    - Breath of the Wild
    - Nioh
    - Marvel's Spiderman
    - Bioshock (The Collection)
    - Mass Effect (1-3)
    - Dead Space (1 and 2)

Beautiful score and soundtrack, incredible motion capture and acting, intense moments, exciting gameplay, and nice stealth sections. For me, the story was powerful, thought provoking and very full-on. It’s very brutal at times, difficult to stomach at some points. The thing that separates people who like this game and those who don’t comes down to if you are feeling empathy for Abby, and characters like Lev reflecting Joel’s relationship with Ellie helped me to feel that empathy. Thanks to this, the ending was very satisfying, emotional. Expand

The game made me feel really tense physically a couple of times and that's honestly amazing. Stories that actually wanna say something are more important now than ever and I want to commend the ambition of everyone involved in this project. I hope we get many more like this. The dislike for it leaves me wondering if people ever understood part 1, and i hope that projects of similar scope get a chance despite the reaction of a lot of "gamers". Im also going to mention that having PoC characters and trans characters in your game is a good thing and if the inclusion of people from diverse backgrounds is a reason for your disliking the game your opinion is invalid. People are indeed different. Before i close i want to briefly mention the acting, which is once again excellent, like it was in part 1. Play the last of us 2, you will not be disappointed. Expand

On the one hand, the graphics and sound design are undeniably fantastic - industry leading for what a developer can accomplish on a current-gen console, to be sure.

On the other hand, the story and characters are tumblr fanfiction-tier. Plot holes everywhere, characters who are utterly unhinged, irrational, completely despicable, and impossible to relate to if you're even remotely well-adjusted. Coupled with the fact that they're being played by actors, who, by their performances illustrate that they've never gone through real hardship or horror makes for a final group of performances that, while basically competent, still fall off as insincere and unbelievable.

To solidify this game's place in the middle of the road comes the gameplay. Bog-standard AAA "stealth" mixed with somewhat chunky gunplay, and all of it marred by "I am in love with my animations" syndrome that so many AAA developers seen to suffer terribly from in recent years makes the gameplay in and of itself wholly unremarkable and translates into a forgettable experience.

The environments, while very pretty and full of detail, feel like video game levels more than they do organic settings, and do extremely little more than make a player stop for a few seconds to take a screenshot and move on without much second thought.

For brevity's sake I will stop it here, because you get the gist. This is the game. A hundred-million dollar project that feels like the entire budget was spent on the graphics/sound team, and then left to some college student interns to write, direct and produce. College interns who think that Twitter and the CW are the pinnacle of cultural and artistic insight.

All the connection we had with Joe and Ellie is all but gone. Specially after Joe got killed! The graphics looks nice, but then again it is a triple A game. What was the purpose pf this game? Except to indulge the super ego that is Neil Duckmann. Forget about emotions from the players side. All gone. History: Worst i have seen in a very long time for triple A. The characters are boring, and stupid to say the least. Game mechanic ok but not overly so. -It is really time for outlets like IGN etc. to stop walking around with brown tongues and rather grow some balls and write what they mean. It is allowed in a free society (we don't live in China) to be a little critical, which is what good journalists should do! This is not! a 10/10 game, by a far shot. Stay away from Neils Duckmanns game. it's just not worth your money or time. Expand

The wonderful storytelling centred around Joel and Ellie, the fun gameplay and the great pacing. The temptation and risk was always to make a sequel that’s bigger at the cost of not being better and sadly that’s what Naughty Dog have fallen into the trap of doing. The story is fine (outside the controversy that I’ll talk about later) - way better than anything out there and I understand why they took the direction they did, but it simply doesn’t have the magic and the originality of the first game. The gameplay is a better version of the first one, but this is both a blessing and a curse. Moment to moment it’s fun, but given the fact that Naughty Dog only seem to be able to make one type of game, i.e. linear, melee, guns and simple environmental puzzle solving, you’ve already played it in the first game, Unchartered 4 and Lost Legacy. Problems still exist - close combat fighting is a pain, human boss battles haven’t progressed beyond L1 to dodge and then square to hit and you just keep doing this. Pacing however is where my biggest gripe is. In the quest to make it bigger, Naughty Dog have added so much padding to the game. At times I was happy to have a little break from the action but at times I simple didn’t want to go through yet another non combat flash back. And (always a bad sign) often wanted this game to come to an end. There’s been a huge amount of fan based negative press against this game, which in the end affected my enjoyment of the game. This annoyed me, but at the same time it was a real wake up call to how the industry works. Simply put everything you hear from trusted sites such as IGN - take with a pinch of salt. Ultimately these sites are reliant on the big gaming companies giving them early access and exclusives and you can image that if they are not nice about a game, well they won’t get the next ... Ever wondered why everyone working for one of these sites have the same opinion? I can only assume that they are told what their employers have aligned on ... Sony and Naughty Dog’s biggest crime however was to lie about what this game is about. It went too far and they mis-sold a game. You just cannot do that. All that aside, the reality is that it is a great game, but it’s just not up there with the true greats. It seemed that the game got stuck in a time freeze (2013 in fact) and the developers got so excited about fancy graphics and their crazy and original idea of a story (which it isn’t) that they didn’t notice the world had moved on. They didn’t notice or try and keep up with masterpieces like BOTW, Red Dead 2, GTA 5, Horizon Zero Dawn and Witcher 3 and instead delivered a game that would have been really cool had it been 2014. Being a huge fan of the first game I always hoped that it would be left to be something truly special. Sadly I always knew that there was too much money at stake and that we’d see a sequel that would be bigger, but sadly not better. And sadly, that’s exactly what Sony and Naughty Dog have delivered. Logically it makes sense to have a sequel and it’s a great game, but Last of Us has never been about logic, it’s about emotions and there’s too much love for the first game for anything to go wrong for a sequel and sadly some things have gone wrong in this sequel. Second off I'm not a Last of us fan. The only reason I have the first game is because it came bundled with my PS4. I liked what I played of the game but I play games for the game play not the story. That's why I love Nintendo & especially Mario. You watch the setup for the game and then you just play. If I want to watch a movie I'll watch a movie. If I want politics I'll read or watch some politics. I could stand the story in The Last Of Us because it was hopeful & conveyed maternal male instincts & loss. I'm a father myself & I could feel for Joel. I did not finish the game because the game play just wasn't fun enough for me to get through it. The story was good enough for me to go online and youtube how it ended. So emotional impact for the original game 9/10. Yet for the Last Of Us 2 I can say that I feel Joel should have given her to the Fireflys and been done with it. (but that would have been out of character right?). The semi-open part of the game is the BEST. Killing the Whistlers are this games' Clickers. And that's just sad in it's own ways. When human characters are scarier than the monsters you're doing something wrong. If you could cut out the story and just play the game it's a 6 or 7/10.
I suggest you just skip all the cutscenes and dialogue if you want a good experience. There is no hopefulness or positive emotional impact in this game. Kills are cool. Music your typical horror fare. So blaaah! With the exception of acoustic moments. Note, I did not finish this game either. Was not fun enough to get me through with a story I wanted to keep skipping. Also I didn't pay for it because I borrowed it from a friend who doesn't want it back.

Gameplay is at a high level. There are mechanics from the first part but there is also a lot of new ones, for example crawling - it gives a lot of new opportunities during movement and during fights. I think that thanks to such mechanics, the game is almost not boring. Of course, the graphics are wonderful and realistic. Character faces always look vivid at different times. The sound setting is also very good. You can see that the naughty dog always keeps the level of its games.

    Story:
In my opinion, not everything must always go our way. This game is just like that. Not predictable and suspenseful. Many people may not like the fact that we play the killer of our favorite character. I was that person myself. However, after learning about Abby's story, we can come to the conclusion that she is not really a bad character. Yes, she killed Joel, but all she wanted was revenge for her father. The ending in my opinion is also very good and leaves a lot of unspoken words. Anyway, it does the same as the first part. I think the game is brilliant and I had a lot of wonderful moments with it. I hope to come back to Ellie's story one day and find out what happened.

It's easy to hate a character you don't care about, even if they survive and live the same way as the character you like. It's a complicated story and needs critical thinking to be understood for what it is, no matter the emotion you might feel.

The gameplay is intense and dark, but it has some really nice moments. Remember Joel saying along these lines in the 1st game: "no matter what, you always find something worth fighting for". Although not uncommon in these types of games, this is something you really see in this game. Emotions run high and the stress levels stay peaking. Never a dull moment.

The game also feels like its tweaked perfectly from the first one. Enemies are more personalized and
advanced. It sort of feels like Naughty Dog fullfilled wishes I didn't know I had in that sense. Some aspects feel more realistic and you feel more agaile as you're playing. This game is also very accessible, which is awesome! Also, hats off to Naughty Dog for showing gay characters!

Playing this game was a wonderful rollercoaster of a journey. The thoughts I have collected over the past 7 years about what the game might be didn't matter once I started. I would never be mad at them for not making what I had hoped or made up in my head, because it is a good game. At the end of the day, you have to see it for what it is, not what you want it to be.

I would recommend altering your mindset if your going in with certain expectations, people need to realize they're not the ones making the game. If you don't like the story, that is your opinion. But please, for the creators and yourselves - give the game a fair chance. It's not **** You might not like it, but that doesn't give you the right to tell people not to buy it or say it garbage. Your opinion is simply yours, and should not ruin for others. No one is forcing you to like it, don't let people make you hate it.

Like many, I have yet to complete this game prior to rating it, but as of right now I'm giving it a moderate 8 along with my explanation. Joel and Ellie share one unique story amongst billions within a pandemic, post-apocalyptic world. As much as we grew to love them both and shared their experiences, we could have just as easily shared Abby's story on TLoU Part 1. If that were the case, knowing what most of us know now, we would have hated Joel without having known his story, along with a different opinion of his character. Love and hate must co-exist and sometimes it comes at a cost. That is the natural order in which we live. Joel knew that he effed up, which is why he couldn't bring himself to tell Ellie the truth. He was blinded by love, anguished still by the death of his daughter and Tess. Joel was not about to lose anyone else that he cared about and he would prevent it by any means necessary. At the end of Part 1, Joel became the biggest monster of them all. We, as the player, couldn't really comprehend this because we were so involved with what he saw, to the point where we were forced to chose what he had already chosen to do; completely immersed in his hatred to the point where he had forced us into being the bad guy. This is who Abby saw, and we were never there to witness her agony. TLoU Part 2 is the aftermath of bad decisions and their repercussions. It's gut wrenching and it will break you down. But if you're gonna rate it, don't base it on the characters human retributions. The game-play is solid, with new features and the new workbench weapon upgrade system is the best that I've seen. My 8 rating isn't for just how much I love it for all the new in-game features and abilities, but for how much I l LOVE to **** hate it. It's a story that I feel will stick with you, long after it's over. If you can't handle a dose of dark principles, go play some Mario Kart. I will rate again after I've finished the game. Expand

The gameplay and graphics is amazing and is one of the best I've ever played and gameplay and graphics deserve a 10 and to be honest when I first completed the game I didn't like the story too much so I thought it would be a 7 but after reflecting I give it a 10 yet there is still room for improvement to the story, the story isn't bad but the fact that the story did not reach it's potential is why so many people are angry and disappointed. Personally I think that there needed to be more Joel in the game either at the start of the game or by adding more flashbacks of Joel and Ellie together. Expand

Made an account just to express how frustrated after playing this game. The system doesn't evolve a lot; the storytelling is way worse than the previous game; the characters are unlikable, especially the change of Allie's attitude toward Abby (although I already guessed what she would do, based on the pattern of how the story is written). Generally a disappointment. I don't know why itMade an account just to express how frustrated after playing this game. I don't know why it received such praises from most of the media, but I do know that IGN Japan, Game Revolution and GAMINGbible are some of the most honest ones among them all.

Also, Sony/naughty dog is freaking racist and double standard. The writer has tons of ways to express that Ellie is not into Jesse, but they chose that race joke. They added so many political correctness thingies, pretending that they care but they do NOT. Deep down they are still a bunch of racists and always trying to pick on a race with the lowest risk. That joke wouldn’t be there if Jesse was black or gay.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is a masterpiece of storytelling that subverts our cultural love for justified violence. There are many people who criticize this game for not giving a satisfying ending, but that isn't the point of the story. So many are calling for a "good guy vs bad guy" story instead, but our culture is already flooded with those. That kind of story is easy to do. Letting Joel live would have been easy to do. Letting Ellie kill Abby would have been easy to do. Go watch a superhero movie if you don't want to question your morals. Stories don't exist solely to make us feel good; if that were the case, Shakespeare wouldn't be a cultural icon for storytelling. If anything, this is the most realistic representation of conflict I've ever seen in a story. Nobody commits terrible acts without reason, and the more you come to know about someone the more you start to understand their justifications. As much as we push the "justice" narrative, "good" and "evil" are not in any way realistic, or distinct, groups. Seeing this fleshed out in a story hurts, and it's easy to blame "bad storytelling" when you're forced to confront your morals. Nobody wants to empathize with the person they hate, and that's the point. Ellie and Abby showed us the cycle of violence perpetuated by rage; one that couldn't be solved by killing, no matter how many bodies piled up. If the story ended with either one of them dead it would have been a cheap ending. An unrealistic ending. The ending feels underwhelming because it's not the "justice porn" that we're so used to consuming. Justice feeds into the cycle. This is a story about letting go of that cycle. Abby did it when she saw how Lev would come to hate her if she fed into it and Ellie did it when she realized how brutal she had become (which was not, as some may think, a disservice to the innocent lives she had already taken, but rather an acknowledgment of the fact that bodies would continue to pile lest she change). This cycle was also echoed in the greater story of Seattle, the killing of two WLF children igniting the endless war between the WLF and the Seraphites. The Last of Us Part II isn't meant to give you another wholesome story, that's what the first one was for. Its purpose is to undermine our sense of moral justice by showing us the destruction it begets. Expand

Technicly the game looks amazing, but playing it there is no joy no sense of wonder... only dissapointment in characters, and some plot twists which made rest of the game irrelevant due to emocinal shock, because after some early dissestars i could not care about what is going to happen and i could not stop thinking about what did happen. This has set a new benchmark in storytelling for games. It deviates from a traditional narrative structure, subverts your expectations. Finally, it breaks your heart, I've never been on a more ambiguous and conflicted journey in a game, it's a credit to the medium and I think this subversion of a traditional narrative ark is what makes it so haunting and difficult for people to digest.

Sadly this game, other than gameplay is missing the charm of the original. I expected to continue on as Joel and instead I am playing as the angry lesbian that barely resembles the girl in the first one. I was unable to complete the game and will be selling it ASAP. The story was so bad and full of LGBT stuff I was disgusted. I did some research online and relealized this stuff was leaked weeks ago and Ellie has been gay since the DLC I never played. All news to me. But I want nothing to do with TLOU series again. Expand

Best game of generation. A lot of people just can’t handle the fact that the history didn’t go as they expected, the circumstances of the game and the consequences are based in what would happen in real life. Life in a world post apocalyptic is sad and there’s death. Haters should get over themselves...

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
