This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is everything I wanted and more. This review will not do the game justice so as a warning please play the game yourself before you read. I tried controlling my excitement as much as possible for the game since I didn’t want to be let down. As a fan of the first game I thought it was important to manage my expectations. I also happen to be one of the people who think the first game had a perfect ending and that game didn’t need a sequel. But after playing this game, oh am I glad they made one. Starting with the aesthetic. The graphics are probably the best I’ve ever seen in any game. I mean it’s expected though, it’s a 2020 game after all and on top of that it’s naughty dog a development team known for their amazing graphics. I also love the film grain, some people don’t even notice it but it gives the game a sort of gritty look which I like. The environments are lush and beautiful as they help give you a feel of the last of us world. And the music, Gustavo Santaolalla tops himself from the first game as the music is even better and honestly this is probably the best soundtrack in a video game and better than some movie soundtracks. I realize how much of a fanboy I’m sounding like but this game is just that good. The gameplay is great. If you like the gameplay in the first last of us, you’ll like it in here as well. It’s not pushing the boundaries of gaming or any thing but it’s perfect for the game. It gives you a feeling of intensity that many other games can’t do. And on top of that it’s smooth, fluid, and fun! There are always dozens of ways you can approach an encounter which adds to the fun and replay ability of the game. Finally let’s talk about the story. The game opens very sombrely and evokes the emotions right away. It’s important to catch up on the first game or you may not feel all of these things. The soberness fades right away as the game kills off Joel right away. People who critique this simply don’t understand what the game was trying to do. This happens to make you feel a certain way. People wanted a clean death for Joel where they feel the loss but the game does that at the end when it wraps things up. You feel an abundance of emotions including anger, confusion, and sadness. If you feel these things, then the game has done its job by putting you in Ellie’s shoes. These feelings drive the rest of the game as you seek revenge which you yourself want since they killed your beloved character. The game takes you on a roller coaster which I can’t get into it all but it’s amazing. Characters like Dina and Jesse have amazing chemistry with Ellie and they’re likeable so you care about them. The acting by the way is phenomenal, again probably the best in a video game. The game then takes a huge risk and makes you play as Abby the person who killed Joel. They make you empathize with her which you would think is an impossible task given the context. And they just pull it all off. With uncomfortable encounters like fighting Ellie as Abby, to heartbreaking scenes like the whole farm sequence. To the final death wish as you play as Ellie at the end it’s an amazing experience which may not work for some people which is okay, the game is meant to be divisive. But for me it worked. Especially the ending with her decision to let Abby go. This ties in to the heartbreaking flashbacks which are some of the best moments in the game with Joel and Ellie. Ellie finally says she would like to try and forgive Joel and just that alone gets Joel teared up, as well as me. So if she could forgive Joel for that then she could respect him and be better than him by letting Abby go. These themes of love, hate, forgiveness are some of the things that make this game great. All of these things are what makes this game great and although it is flawed like any other game, the great things are so great that they make the game perfect for me. Great job naughty dog! Expand

Compared to the first part this game suffers from its boring (and irrational) characters. Furthermore, the complete story is to weak to rescue the game.

On the other side this game has an amazing and immersive world with an excellent atmosphere (really enjoyed the first 2/3). Interestingly, large parts of the game appear to have been developed long time ago for the PS3 in first place.

On one side I liked the grim dark aspect of the future, on the other side i was quite disappointed at the end after nearly 40h on hard difficulty. I think game developers should really consider to hire better writers for such kind of projects.

Graphically this game is an 11/10 but man the story sucks! I was actually ok with it up until you are forced to beat Ellie as Abby. I was trusting the game to come through as its a story is a marathon, not a sprint but they never delivered. I didn't want to play as Abby but understood where the game was coming from making me play as her and seeing her POV. I understand that and I do respect that. The game wanted me to see Abby as a human and understand her motives and not just be a one dimensional "bad guy". I did see her POV and I did understand her motives but that didn't change the fact that I hate her and want to play as Ellie again so I can kill her. The section with Abby dragged on WAY too long and when I was forced to "hunt" and then beat Ellie I almost turned the game off for good. I continued thinking that after all this Ellie would finally get her revenge but no, 30+ hours and no pay off. The game really expects me to hate Ellie and see her as the bad guy now? Not happening! You've taken one person I care about away in Joel and that was a bold move but I am not turning on Ellie. I was actually ok with Joel being killed if the premise was to exact revenge but you never get it. Abby gets to sail off into the sunset (almost literally) after she got her revenge but Ellie loses everything. You never really see Abby grow as a character and she never shows remorse for what she did to Joel. You see Ellie struggle with some of the things she has done, Mel especially, collapsing to the floor when she realises she just killed a pregnant lady but no such thing for Abby. In fact when she finds out that Dina is pregnant she says "good" and goes to slit her throat only being stopped by Lev.

The positives of this game is that it is visually stunning, just breathtaking at points and i did enjoy playing it but the story and disappointing, stupid unsatisfying ending ruined not just the game but the franchise. If they make a third game with Abby as the main protagonist (which im really worried they will) I wont be buying it. I feel so let down by how this game ended. 7 years I waited for this and its such a huge slap in the face.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game itself as an adventure is good. But the plot of the game did not like me at all. Pour Joel on the second hour of the game-Joel who went with Ellie through a bunch of bandits, cannibals, etc. helps the first girl on steroids. After Joel's death, you are filled with hatred, and you go to get revenge. OK you play for Ellie and get used to it, but then the second part you play for Abby - for the one who so cruelly killed Joel, why, why, I want to end this part as fast as possible. Not once did I get the hang of Abby's story. Closer to the end, there is no strength to play, but damn it when it's over. And the ending is just complete **** you can't get back at Abby - there's just no way.
Another of the disadvantages is the obsession with LGBT topics, I do not condemn LGBT, but for me the game is clearly too much.

The ending was not satisfying for me, lacked any closure, perhaps thats what they wanted, who knows. I get that it's uncomfortable to play as Abby, that people were upset about the death of Joel and they wanted revenge. I think this game is simply beautiful. To sum it up, I am glad that the road to a dehumanized Ellie stopped. I really like the evolution of characters and how they try to mess up with out moral code. Considering it's an apocalyptic scenario, feeling some empathy it's rare, which makes Ellie and Abby two great characters. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II. Spoiler Alert !

    Spoiler Alert !!

    Spoiler Alert !!!

Joel f**ked the whole world to save Ellie. Almost everyone, if not all, projected the dead daughter’s image on Ellie when Joel was stepping out of the hospital. It was not justified yet reasonable for Joel to kill the last person of Fireflies. While controlling Joel walked through the game, all I thought was to save the little girl, she was just like my daughter, and I could not bear to lose a daughter again.

All the characters that I had built with strong bonds in the Episode one were so broken in this Part II. I really wish the time could be stoped when Joel and Ellie were visiting the museum, when she putted up the astronaut helmet, when the rocket launched. Yet I had to push forward the story. If it was inevitable, then Joel deserved a better death. He could die a hero, instead of being tortured and butchered as an animal by Abby who was nearly survived from the Infectors and was save by Joel. How could a player invest empathy to Abby in the second part of the game when the first part the game was deliberately designed to kill her, especially after she killed Joel in such a brutal way. Yet you have to play Abby as the main character of the game for about 10 hours. NaughtyDogs demonstrated Abby’s misery and tried to provoke players’ sympathy towards her. That might be working when judged from players’ god viewpoint. However, Ellie did not know that part. Ellie did not know Abby’s reasons for killing, which made the final scene extremely uncomfortable in which Ellie let Abby go by the moment the later was almost drown, by the moment which costed Ellie’ peaceful life with Dina and JJ, by the moment Ellie started a new revenge while players had have somewhat accepted the fact that the two girls all had miserable lives and both deserve to live. When I thought the game would be fine if it ended that way. The writer of the game sent Ellie out for another chasing for Abby. A chasing that actually saved Abby from local bandits and freed her from a death penalty. When I thought the two would help each other get out of the war zone, they fought against each other again. Ellie started the fight, Ellie was winning, and Ellie let her go again. WTF. What was the purpose of this piece of story? I killed thousands of people, including innocents, to find my enemy for a revenge, and when I have finally found the enemy and have the chance to avenge Joel’s death, I choose to let you go simply because the game said so, because the writer thought killing is not good. Then how about the lives I took on my way? The game did not provide any non-killing options for players to walk through the game peacefully. It actually explicitly exhibited the brutal scenario of killing, including bloody executions. That is absolutely a bullsh*t. In sum, the Part one led players to slaughter the world to save my little girl, and the Part two simply told you that you should not have saved the girl because you killed people. And killing is very very bad. The Last of Us Part II is the last of NaughtyDogs for me. I swear.

It could have worked if it were told differently but they took a risk and in my opinion they fell flat. I did not like how they handled some of the characters and their fates ( anybody who has the game knows witch characters I am talking about ).

Is this game a 0 out of 10? No. Is this game worth of the all the 10 ratings it has been getting? No.

There were definite points in the game where going through it felt draining and hard emotionally but it's incredible that a game can now achieve that level of empathy and immersion. There were points where I definitely questioned decisions in how the game is structured and how I felt about certain characters, but I was always left convinced. This game treats the player as an adult who can handle characters that are flawed, not instantly likeable or just irritating. Regardless of how I felt initially about characters initially, my thoughts and feelings were constantly changing and being questioned and I felt something for all of them. This game is an experience like no other I've played and while I think it'll be a while before I (if ever) play through it again, I'll never forget this playthrough and it will stay with me forever.

Ignore the petty backlash from strange men arriving to this game with preconceptions and prejudices, and who have in most cases haven't played it. If you have an open mind and are looking for something to make you question and think about human fallibility, emotional conflict and so on, then definitely pick this up.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After the first game, many fans debated whether Joel was in fact the true villain of The Last of Us - saving Ellie but preventing any chance of a vaccine being created to help humankind in the post apocalyptic world they live in. We sympathise with Joel's decision because we spent an entire game sharing his experiences with Ellie and if we were in his shoes who is to say we wouldn't have made the same decision (as Tommy says at the beginning of Part 2).

In The Last of Us Part 2 we get to see the aftermath of Joel's actions from the perspective of his victims - Abby finds her father killed along with all other fireflies that crossed Joel's path in the hospital. If we had never seen Joel and Ellie's journey I'm sure we would be rooting for Abby's revenge story but because we didn't, a lot of gamers straight up refused to see or accept Abby's reasons for wanting to kill Joel. Who wouldn't want to get revenge on the man who killed their father?

I was truly gutted that Joel died so early on in the game and it was a difficult scene to watch. However, it is a major plot device that propels Ellie into her revenge rampage in Seattle. I enjoyed the flashback scenes with Joel showing how he had settled down in Jackson County and trying to repair his deteriorating relationship with Ellie after the events of the first game. In Joel's last flashback scene with Ellie they both agree to wanting to move forward, with Ellie prepared to try and forgive Joel. Tragically, by the time this scene is shown, we know that will be the last time they speak.

The game contrasts Abby and Ellie's revenge stories well, showing Abby succeed but not stopping the pain of losing her father so she focuses her life by helping Lev. Ellie had the chance to be happy; she had a home, Dina and baby JJ but her PTSD and a push from Tommy set her off again. I've seen many comments that Tommy's actions here are completely out of character but at this point he had lost so much - Joel, witnessing Jesse's death, his relationship with Maria, his eye and now left with restricted mobility, so why wouldn't he be hell-bent on revenge? Tommy current state of mind here is similar to where Ellie was after Joel's death.

Ellie had already lost Dina and JJ the moment she left to kill Abby again, so even if she had succeeded she would still be left with nothing afterwards; Ellie breaks the cycle of revenge and the characters have a chance to move on to try and find some happiness. I've seen more comments saying this is out of character for Ellie (just like the early Tommy comments I mentioned) and that she had no problem killing all those people in Seattle, but I believe she was too blinded by revenge to stop and see what was happening and that she was basically doing what Joel did at Salt Lake City Hospital. It's not until she has the chance to finally kill Abby that an image of Joel playing his guitar appears in her head - this is significant because since his death, Ellie had been unable to remember his face (as depicted in Ellie's journal with drawings of Joel's distorted face) but for the first time since then, Joel's face finally appears to her. Ironically, if Ellie had not left Dina and JJ at the farm, Abby would have most likely died at the hands of the Rattlers along with Lev, so in reality Ellie saved their lives.

Upon returning to the empty farm, it is shown that Ellie can no longer play the guitar due to losing some fingers in the final battle with Abby, losing yet another connection she had with Joel. Ellie's greatest fear that she shared with Sam in the first game was to end up alone and her need for revenge saw that come true at the end of this game.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but just because it didn't go how you wanted it to it doesn't make it a bad game. I personally preferred the first instalment but Part 2 decides to take a different route rather than mirroring it's predecessor (not to mention introducing some greatly improved gameplay features), keeping it fresh and further exploring revenge, forgiveness and the consequences of actions in a post apocalyptic world.

Fireflies will have found a new doctor able to create a vaccine.

Good game and amazed at the amount of reviews scores of 0 or roundabout that are posted on the release date. It's a shame, this game is not what I expected with regards the story and I was sad to loose Joel early, but I kept an open mind and heart to the story and thoroughly enjoyed it.

There are many plot holes in the first story too and to name a few - why drive through the town instead of backing up and finding another route even if it means walking - Joel would know what to expect? Joel and Tommy following Ellie's horse track through an enemy compound and she is not attacked or captured but they are attacked by 8 plus enemies? Tommy's compound is conveniently attacked just as Joel is talking about Ellie? Why rush the surgery, a surgeon not bothered about patient consent?

I guess people see through different lenses when upset and I can see and respect why some are not happy with this story line. This game is not a 0 or 2 if you don't like the story because you loved part 1 so much you are offended by the path taken by the writers, just for quality, acting and sound it is a 5 minimum. Good job ND.

I really liked the crafting system (proximity mines!) and I loved weapon upgrades. Even though I platinum this game, I still resent the separation of previous areas by impassable obstacles, that makes you rerun whole sub-chapter if you miss a card somewhere. I liked THE twist but was not happy with it. I really liked the "notes" stories that helps to build the TLOU world. My only issue is that the things that this game does best are the same things as in previous installment, I expected more improvements and innovation in gameplay.

Personally, I believe if the authors chose to write the same revenge-forgiveness story with different characters with Joel and Ellie cameos, the reaction would not be that strong. On the other hand, the story is meant to provoke strong reaction and in this NG succeeded.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I flat out loved this game! Honestly, I think there a couple genuine flaws I'll admit to. The game does tend to drag missions on just barely pass expiration dates sometimes (but usually this is allayed by still having a helluva culmination to the mission waiting for ya!). I also feel that as much as the switch works for me, interspersing the character switches throughout the game might have helped some others better empathize with Abby and feel for her. I still found myself torn between the two characters even as they attempted to murder one another, but I suppose I can see where others are coming from. Now, looking pass that, I pretty much just see gold.
Going back to what I said earlier, I feel a large point of the game was to feel the cycle of revenge from both perspectives, to recognize yourself as Ellie playing almost the villain of the story and that really hit home for me, taking advantage of the growing discomfort the game had been building with Ellie's actions to slam it home by having us walk our killing grounds and interacting with our future victims.
This sympathy got further enforced with Ellie on that farm, unable to cope with Joel's death and move on, allowing us to really feel the life Joel had left Abby with for years.
It used this empathy to ultimately foster a sense of forgiveness towards both this game's protagonists as well as for Joel. So, more so than the goal of revenge, that forgiveness proved to be the thing Ellie needed. Not for Abby, though I think she came as close to it as possible, but for Joel and herself.
Don't worry, I already know how masturbatory this review sounds lol

I thought the story was great, especially by video game standards where games like Nier Automata is considered having great writing... It is however definitely a bit indulgent in prioritizing story telling over everything else, like in having multiple extended playable flashbacks. And imo the game would have benefited from having some more cynical editors involved.

The highlight for me is the gameplay, with both the stealth and the action being really great (especially the action). Almost all the fights manage to feel incredibly intense. On paper the gameplay mechanics are very similar to the first game, however it feels entirely different to play and is so much more fun.

If they really wanted to shove abby down the gamers throats they should have given the option to kill her or spare her and made a more detailed ending. Avoid spending your hard earned money for what becomes a pointless and frustrating game in the end. If there is a next installment, and i think what they are going to make also removing ellie or making the game most cringeworthy, I will ignore it and just forget the fact that this franchise even existed. Thank you pigheaded naughtydog writers for ruining what could have been a great game. Expand

The Last Of Us 2 is a game with a primary focus of storytelling as opposed to gameplay. However, the game's ability to tell a narrative masterpiece not only falls flat and is riddled with plot holes, the ending is a twist that's completely counter-intuitive to the message the game wants to convey.

The gameplay is also just as clunky as the original with very minimal improvements.

The gameplay is also just as clunky as the original with very minimal improvements. Jumping would have been a wonderful addition had it provided any meaningful quality changes. Instead, it's just a small hop that only serves very few puzzle-solving purposes. The only true improvement to gameplay was the addition of proning. However it doesn't do enough to make the game stand too far out from the original. The only redeeming quality of The Last Of Us 2 is the beautiful world design and graphics.

Overall, this game boils down to a storytelling game with bad storytelling and outdated gameplay mechanics. I highly advise you stay far away from this game

I was lucky to have avoided spoilers. A devastingly beautiful narrative tour de force. Fantastic performances and bold story telling. Technically brilliant and perhaps the most gorgeous game on any platform despite being on PS4. Avoid spoilers if you can, as I did, and you'll be able to enjoy this story of violent retribution, empathy and redemption. I understand how this game is devisive, if you don't like it you're probably justified. But for me, this narrative nailed all its story beats and for me, is PS4's best game.

    Highly recommended.

What they told to us before release? - vertical gameplay, a lot of variations to going through level. And what we see? Only one location in a Seattle at the beginning and all time after it’s a line gameplay again in 2020!
Also of course the story: kill the main character at the beginning of the game and try to explain it by the gaming for some boring and empty inside character ( Abby) It’s just a little part of my disappointing in this game and I hope third part won’t be ever development with this leader of studio.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I hate having to write this review because I was hoping for so much in this game after loving the first one and having played it for more than 5 times already.
I loved everything about the first one, the relationship between Joel and Ellie, the secondary characters such as Bill, Henry, Sam, Tommy, etc. They all felt real and added something to the story and helped to further expand and explain the world and the conditions in how they lived. Every character felt like it had a purpose in being there. The story was perfect in portraying how Joel had been affected by losing Sara and then how he started seeing Ellie as her chance as having a daughter again. The first game made me feel for the characters as well as leaving impressions on me, I actually got very sad at times and even cried a little at some.
As for the 2nd part none of that happened. I don’t mind that they killed Joel, what bothers me is the way they did it. It felt rushed and they spent a lot of the time trying to show him as a bad person, he was not a saint but also not as bad as they made him out to be. The side characters in this game really did nothing for me, none of them were memorable for me. My favorite side character would have to be either Lev or Jesse because they were the most develope of them, Lev actually had some background developed for him (the things he keeps telling Abby about his life), Jesse was a funny and not so serious guy. As for Abby’s friends I didn’t really care much about them except for Owen, he came out as one of the better guys by being human, I can’t recall any time he did anything macabre as Abby did, in fact he was the one that stopped Abby from further torturing Joel, he also started sympathizing with the seraphites late in the game. The other ones I don’t care about, Mel and Manny are the worst.

I had to replay the first game in order to better notice the differences between Ellie and Joel in the first and second game. In the first game Ellie was a funny, easygoing and sweet person but in the second one they made her a hate-able character, Joel (and Tommy) were smart in the first game and cautious whereas in the second they are really the opposite.
I didn’t like playing as Abby because I could feel from the get go how the game wants you to force her to like her by manipulating you, an example of this is the well known dog killing aspect, as Ellie you kill dogs and as Abby you pet and play fetch with dogs. Naughty Dog wants us to like Abby so much but I simply couldn’t like her, she was a prick for the entirety of the game except at the end with the seraphite kids, she never showed remorse for killing Joel or Jesse, and I could even see that she thought that she was right in her doing so. She’s such a despisable character. The game gives us less than 20 minutes of Joel, which was one of the reasons why the first game was extremely liked. They also deceived us in the trailers by making it look like we were going to play as Joel (horse ride doesn’t count), the marketing for the game was completely different in comparison to what we got (it almost seems like not even Naughty Dog was confident in what they were making so they thought of fooling us). They also said that Ellie was going to be the only playable character but then we get “introduced to Abby in the first hour of gameplay.

In terms of graphics and gameplay the game is amazing but the story is not. I think it could have been much better even with the same plot, just executed in a different way.

The ending was unsatisfying but not just because Ellie didn’t kill Abby, they never managed to get the point of “revenge leads to nothing” across, or whatever they wanted to say, it just leaves us with a sour experience. It’s clear how they wanted to destroy Ellie, they left her with absolutely nothing, meanwhile Abby gets to live a happy life with Lev (again she showed no remorse at all).

It saddens me that the game wasn’t good because I was really looking forward to it after the first one being one of my favorite games of all time. I wanted to like it so much but I just couldn’t.

I know I’ll get targeted as a bigot but say whatever you want, I don’t mind the LGBTQ+ in the game, I think it’s good to include it to some extent. Remember, we’ve known about Ellie since the Left Behind DLC and that was also universally appraised as the first game.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
