I created an account just to make this review. The graphics and gameplay just barely make the game playable. The story is a dumpster fire and tries to force you to empathize with people you truly don’t care about.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Just finished the game and I think it was a masterpiece. I felt so many different emotions throughout, it truly made me think and that’s what I think was a big part of this game. It didn’t make you just think in terms of story but also in terms of strategy. The gameplay was fluid and playing on survival made me really plan out my next steps. I don’t fully understand a lot of other peoples hate for the story, yes it was brutal what happened to Joel and sad to see him die so early however it’s a brutal world they live in and that’s what happened. I think they did amazing work as I was enraged and distraught just as Ellie was, I wasn’t just playing as Ellie I was Ellie. Then things turned around and something happened that none of us expected, we were forced to play as the character we had come to hate. However it gave us an opportunity to do what a lot of people don’t do, look at the other side of the picture. I felt sick at first having to play as Abby, however as time went on and we found out more I began to almost understand in some way. Again it made me think...I still hated Abby for what she did but I know why she did it, it’s more or less the same reason for why Ellie is going down her own revenge path. I fully understood by the end that the main idea was forgiveness and the ability to move on, breaking the cycle of revenge. Abby has clearly been through a lot with the rattlers and I think that was one of the reasons that Ellie let her go, mainly though I believe it was that she saw Joel in Abby at that point, regarding her love and dedication to saving Lev, just as Joel did for Ellie. Furthermore I just want to say how amazing the little details are in this game and the side stories you find out through collecting artefacts. The scenery and the music. This game was a masterpiece to me, harrowing yet beautiful. I could go on and on, there may be things that weren’t quite right with the game but If so I don’t care. I enjoyed it and that’s what matters. Also just play it to blow someone’s legs off with explosive arrows. Expand

It's a conflicting game, that forces the player into uncomfortable situations and brutal scenes. Let's start off by saying that this game looks incredible, with environments that almost look like real life and characters where you can see distinctive hair strains, which is insane! Even small touches, like grass blowing with the wind, or how the blood from enemies mixes with water puddles, elevates this game beyond its competition. Likewise, the artwork is magnificent, striking a balance of gruesome realism with bleek environments and horrifying infected, and beautiful landscapes of grass fields and oceans, much thanks to the astonishing lighting. If we're talking presentation, music has also improved immensely from the previous game, relaxing the player in somber moments and hitting harder in intense scenes. Gameplay has also improved, with bigger levels, more weapons, more choices. New mechanics include rope swinging, wall gaps and even a jump button (!). The previously mentioned bigger levels mixed with the new mechanics makes the gameplay more complex and fun, though it could've been improved even more to blow the player away. The game also throws in dogs, that can sniff your scent and forces the player to move around in new manner, though if you really like dogs, this might take a toll on you. We're the game starts to split one's appreciation of the game is in the story. The story takes some bold and adventurous turns, making the experience harrowing and frightening at some occasions. Right from the getko, the game let's you know that it will not be like the predecessor and takes some big risks. It asks morally ambiguous questions that can make the player divided about some choices they have to make. The ending leaves a lasting impression on the player, and the more you think about it, the deeper its meanings become. The actors too do an incredible job, with standouts being reprising actors Ashley Jonson as Ellie and Troy Baker as Joel, and also newcomer Laura Bailey stealing the show as Abby. The game also makes the characters perform questionable actions and make the player experience them. The game isn't as concerned about what the player wants to do, as it is about how the characters react and behave in those situations, which makes for more claustrophobic and uncomfortable moments that don't give the player any choice, which is in this game's advantage. Where the game faults is in its pacing. The game shifts time spans very often and sometimes it can feel like a mess. Certain scenarios or time jumps occur and you wonder why that didn't happen before/after. This isn't the case for some time cuts, but one storyline in particular has this issue. It makes the enjoyment and surprises less interesting in some places. At some points the game can feel drawn out and last way too long, most notable in the middle section after the intro. Some of the new characters also feel underdeveloped. Dina is interesting as a character, but you don't learn a whole lot about her dreams and aspirations. Same goes for Jesse, who is underused and could've had some better writing in his presence. The story isn't bad, it's actually really great sometimes, it just needed some more cooking in the oven. It's also sad too see the multiplayer not returning. As all assets and development moved over to singleplayer, the online playing field got scrapped. While I think it's more important to see development improve and focus on the singleplayer, it's still disappointing to not see multiplayer included. In conclusion, The Last of Us Part II is a conflicitng experience. A lot of improvements and tweeks have been added to make the experience better, especially in gameplay and artistry, but at the same time the story is a mixed bag, with some incredible bright spots and some other spots that fall flat, due to pacing issues. Still, this is a great game that I would recommend to most people, because the experience over all is still enjoyable and fun and the discussions that can come from people talking about this game will engage people maybe even more to this game. While not as good and engaging as the first game, it still provides a lot of fun and interesting choices that will make the player question what is going to happen next and their own morales. I commend Naughty Dog for trying something new and different, even though they didn't always stick the landing. Expand

Many fans had a personal real-life connection to Joel and Ellie from the first game. What Neil Druckmann did to Joel and Ellie in this game is so abhorrent and just plain out doesn't make sense. Naughty Dog should redeem themselves and remake the story and gain back the loyalty of the fans. Leave political and social agendas to the politicians. We fans play games to escape the hardships of reality. Fans are aware of what's going on out there in the real world. But don't shove it down our throats. Expand

The way the AI of the enemies work is quite good and the way they communicate with each other while fighting you makes it feel realistic and serious. Playing it with a headset makes the expercience even more engaging. The sounds are top-notch, they will emerse you even more with the environment and sometimes even scare you in some horror parts.
Although the game seems perfect so far, it is not. The main factor in this game is the story. And even though I can understand and actually like some choices they took with the plot, most of it seems like they pushed it too far to have a story to tell in this game. The writting is good but it had so much more potential if they had gone with a saffer route. This gets evident when the most memorable parts of the game are a few flashbacks to the time when the first game ended.
Summing all this up, the game is far from being bad and I actually had a good time playing it, but if you compare it directly to the first game, it stands quite behind, since that one raised the bar really high.

The beautiful landscapes and art work could only distract me for so long. There is no originality in this game in regards to the story..... there is NO actual story and any chance there could have been was destroyed. It is bits and pieces of actual nothingness just to reach an end that was extremely rushed and void of any actual work put into it. I will break the disc into tiny pieces lock it in a box, dig a deep dark hole throw it in, fill it with gas and light in on fire. When the fire is out, I will pour concrete in and top it off with a thin layer of dirt. Drastic you say,....I just would hate to be responsible for putting someone through the misery and time waste that I just went through. Jokes aside, Naughty Dog had an opportunity to do something beyond anything done before. Instead, they dropped a nuke on it so there would be no coming back. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.
So wäre Joels Tod glaubwürdiger.

Despite trying to deftly avoid all spoilers following the controversial leaks at the end of April, ultimately one key scene managed to slip through my net. However, I was determined not to let this ruin my enjoyment of the game - if anything the furore and inexplicably vitriolic waves of hostility that were being levelled at the game that erupted online only served to strengthen my resolve to play it first and make my own mind up how I felt. Well, having done that (twice now, already), I can safely state that this game has not been a disappoint. Sure, certain story beats hit hard, but that's exactly what I was counting on from the get go - I wasn't expecting a happy-go-lucky road movie adventure. We all knew that this was going to be a darker, revenge-oriented story, and even way back when the very first teaser trailer was released, some of the fan ase plot theories that immediately started circulating really weren't so wide of the mark, so certain key plot elements shouldn't have been such a leap of disbelief. As for the narrative, it's brilliantly written. The sterling performances from the entire cast really help flesh out this world - even the NPC dialogue feels so much more naturalistic, especially during combat - I was utterly riveted once I got fully immersed in palm-sweatingly tense slealth, mêlée combat and gunplay encounters with this infinitely more realistic array of foes. And as to the horror quotient: there are some genuinely harrowing jump-scares and breath-holdingly creepy encounters that kept me glued, unblinking, to my TV screen. There are some brilliantly vertiginous, stomach-turning key sequences too. In fact, at times, the entire game feels like a long string of finely crafted set-pieces. It does suffer a little with pacing issues at times, but as a gamer who likes to take their time and get their money's worth, this really didn't bother me all that much. My first playthrough took me a smidge over 50 hours, my second, 45 or so. Ker-ching. Gameplay-wise, there are improvements to the overall mechanics that make this so much more fluid and satisfying. I've played the original through probably a dozen times now since its release - and I can see myself returning to The Last Of Us Part II for many repeat visits to come. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us is my favourite game of all time so I was excited for the sequel, even though I got spoiled about one of the major events. This event sounded questionable but I decided to wait for contexts like many of the critic reviews said to before I judged it. My thoughts on the game overall by the end was graphics 10/10, gameplay 9/10, story 3/10. The story just killed my enjoyment of The Last of Us Part 2 completely. It is so terribly written. There are some good moments, which is why the story gets a 3 and not a 0 but they in no way make up for the awful story choices that are made. Joel's relationship with Ellie is spat upon, characters make ridiculous choices, and the mystery woman, played by Laura Bailey, is, in my opinion, the worst video game character of all time. This character and the way she is portrayed is one of the big reasons why the story is so bad. Not only that but the ending is just awful. It completely undoes the message they were trying to tell and makes everything feel pointless. Again, the graphics and gameplay are amazing, but I just did not want to replay the game and witness such a terrible story. I returned the game yesterday. 4/10. The graphics, gameplay and some story elements are good but since the overall story is so important to The Last of Us Part 2 , and most of that story is horrible, I had to give it a 4. Now, whenever I replay the original The Last of Us, I am going to have to pretend that this disaster never happened. fgdg Expand

And after all that, it is a really good game and I enjoyed every second of it. I can understand both point of views. However, I won't understand and talk to the people who are complaining about transsexual characters or that Abby is simply too ugly or similar s**** like this.
It's shocking and in some way frustrating if the polt twist contains a change of characters and nobody wanted to play Joel's killer. But Naughty Dog tried something new and they did it really good.
I've never went really warm with Abby and I would have changed a few things concerning story telling and plot holes, but I will never regret buying this game.

It believes itself to be telling a deep story of “revenge is bad” but it fails to recognize that justice and revenge are two sides to the same coin. In a world where there is no external justice, communities have to protect themselves and take their own justice. This game ignores that nuance, instead delving into a weird, “killing people who came to your town, hunted, tortured, and murdered one of your own should be forgiven.” That’s not how society works. That’s never been how society works. That’s literally why our society has jury nullification, because sometimes we all agree that revenge killing is justice(I.e., in recent years, the father in Texas who killed his daughter’s rapist with a shotgun). We see two paths laid out in the game: Ellie, who’s father figure is brutally tortured and His corpse desecrated in front of her, by invaders who came to her community and tried to kill her and her uncle. She hunts them down and executed them quickly, and only in self defense(with the exception of Nora, an enemy combatant that she tortures for information on the rest of the invaders). And then there is Abby’s path. Abby is out for torture and blood and pain. We see her mercilessly torture others with no emotional reckoning after the fact, we see her betray and turn on her own companions, and yet the game repeatedly tries to instill that Abby’s path was justice, not revenge, whereas Ellie’s path is revenge, not justice. They utterly failed at their own theme or any sense of nuance and it makes the entire game ring hollow. Ironically, a play series written in 400 BC dealt with the theme of the boundary between societal justice and personal revenge ENORMOUSLY better than this. It’s called the Orestia cycle, and I highly recommend that the writers of this game look into it. The playwright concludes in the end that revenge only becomes unjustified when there is an external force to administer justice. Expand

The Last of Us Part II transcends the question of “what happens next?” by carefully unpacking the events of its predecessor and using them as a platform to convey the impact that loss, trauma and revenge have on the human spirit.

Story:Most people would disagree with this opinion but I really enjoyed the game, there were flaws with it, the story was a bit drawn out, I would have liked to play as Joel more and have less time with Abby, I think the emotions the game gives are things that not many other games have done, the sadness when Joel dies and the conflicting feelings when fighting Ellie with Abby and actually wanting to lose

Graphics: amazing graphic 10/10 best of the generation no doubt, I understand how people might not like the story but giving the game anything from a 0-4 is unfair just for this reason

Gameplay: also a 10/10 for the gameplay - builds from the last game but also stays true to its core, the dodge button and prone made the gameplay much better, saying that there’s no difference from the first game is just a lie, from the silencer to the new guns and Ellie’s knife and the new infected and boss fight Overall the small problems I had with the story didn’t ruin the game for me rather just stopped it from being a 9,10/10 but if u could I’d give the game somewhere between 7 and 8

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I see all the people saying that they hate playing as Abby and they despise her. I understand them, she killed Joel in a horrible way, like a monster. I wasn't thrilled to play as Abby also and I was very mad at her and wanted to see Ellie kill her brutally, the same way she did to Joel,
but when you get to know her and listen to her story and her perspective of the world it makes you empathize with her. Because Joel killed two things for her 1) Her dad (in a very brutal way, I believe that he could just push him away or knock him out, and not shove a syringe down his throat) 2) Any hope for a vaccine/cure for the infection, and hope for a better world, a saved world.
All that just so he won't lose Ellie, which, became like a daughter for him. I understand why he did it but I really didn't agree with it. So I can understand Abby, not agree or justify her actions, but understand them. This game is way more complex then good-evil/wrong-right/Villain-hero
I think its a beautiful game and it has a really awesome gameplay mechanics and overall very fun game to play and get into it. I'm not giving it 10/10 because It failed to connect me to the characters and really empathize with them as the first one did. And I didn't get emotional with this game like the first game. I believe that many of the deaths in this game were not dealt with, and you didn't feel anything for them because the player didn't show any emotion to their death (Manny/Jessie ) and just forgot about them. Unlike the first game, Tess's death does have an impact on Joel's and Ellie's journey. Maybe not a huge one, but they don't just brush it away, they tend to it and Ellie tries to talk about it. I think that the meaning and impact of death were lacked in the second game. Other than that its a beautiful and amazing game. 9/10

So I've been playing The Last of Us Part ll at my pace consuming everything properly and OOF - It hurts me because I've never played a game which is such technical marvel, peak of PS4's performance as of now, yet the story structure seems like it's written by a nuthead kid's understanding of what it means to be 'deep' or 'dark'.
A WASTED OPPORTUNITY WITH A GAME THAT NEVER NEEDED TO EXIST

So I've been playing The Last of Us Part ll at my pace consuming everything properly and OOF - It hurts me because I've never played a game which is such technical marvel, peak of PS4's performance as of now, yet the story structure seems like it's written by a nuthead kid's understanding of what it means to be 'deep' or 'dark'.
And mind you, it's absolutely nothing related to the LGBTQ representation etc. - those are more natural and digestible parts of the story.
It's about the plothole-riddled mess of a story which gives up on itself halfway and you're left feeling meaningless about this 'personal vendetta'.
You should play TLOU2 once ONLY if you don't give a damn about character development, story writing, structuring of the story for building a bond with the player and VERY MUCH visible story inconsistencies. Apart from these, the game is **** masterpiece, which is where it breaks me, you go through these amazing levels, tense gameplay moments, gorgeous vistas, phenomenal sound design experience, feeling better and expecting better out of the game only to be kicked back by the story, into realising how mediocre it is.
The entire story by far reeks of a very badly directed Netflix show.
The character development is the poorest, Joel doesn't feel like Joel, Ellie isn't Ellie, the side characters like Jesse, Owen, Mel etc are way better developed and have more dimensions to them than the leads.
The person who actually needs introduction first - Abby, is kept from player's understanding for majority of the game when she's the one who should be introduced and connected to the player first.

It's like Neil Druckmann forget how to write and direct after Bruce Straley and Amy Hennig left Naughty Dog and now you see how much his stuff is worth, straight nose-dive faceplanted on the ground from the success of Uncharted 4.

And their marketing did a piss poor job by setting up fake moments in trailer which NEVER happen in the actual game to reel-in customers with false advertising.

Oh and a note, if you're buying this game because you love The Last Of Us Part l, please don't, you're coming in to see how a person with zero story writing and direction skills wastes the talent and time of a studio full of RAD developers, designers, artists, animators, voice actors to fulfill his broken vision of the game.
Huge respect to Naughty Dog production studio for the technical marvel of a game, it's sad to see how just one apple in this amazing basket ruins the entire package.

This game will stand as a testimony of how even with the most state-of-the-art tech, phenomenal graphics and intriguing gameplay, your game will fall flat if the story ain't worth it.

Please note, these are my individual opinions based on my hands-on gameplay. Your experience and opinions are bound to vary. Thanks for reading.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is probably one of the best games that I have ever played. There are so many just beautiful things about the game, one of which is obviously the stunning graphics and another being the brilliant game play. But contrary to what many seem to be saying, it also has a masterfully written story that makes you question your actions while seeking your revenge after the death of Joel. Now... the death of Joel is something that many seem mad about, but in all honesty, there is nothing wrong with his death, it is realistic, it makes us face the harsh reality of the world that is The Last of Us. While I do agree that Joel died a bit early, it is in no way detrimental to the story whatsoever and gives you a drive to push through the many violent encounters to find Abby.

Now that we have gotten to the subject, I think that Abby is a brilliant character that had the unfortunate role of being the one to kill Joel. When comparing Ellie and Abby you see that there are many parallels between the two and the seem to follow the constant idea of 'If I ever were to lose you, I'd surely lose myself'. Yes, as a hardcore Ellie fan, it was heartbreaking to play as Abby and try to kill Ellie, but it also let's us realize that Ellie and Joel aren't the only people in this world who have lost people, Ellie and Joel are not the only people who feel, there are consequences to out actions.

The flashbacks were emotional, with the Birthday flashback possibly being my favorite segment of the game, and once you get to the end you come to realize that the death of Joel not only ripped Ellie of her father figure, but also her chance to forgive Joel, again reinforcing the idea of how cruel and spontaneous this world can be.

The ending was also one of the best endings I have ever seen, bringing me to tears as I saw the aftermath of Ellie's revenge, missing two fingers and unable to play the guitar the Joel gave her, all the while Abby is still alive. Leaving Abby alive was something that I was very mad about when I heard about the ending initially, but when I finally played to the end, I realised that this was what I as the player wanted, I just waned Ellie to stop this senseless violence, to move on. Having Abby on the verge of death had me thinking 'Is this even worth it any more?". I'm glad this ending really resonated with me but I can understand how many would not like this.

This game was beautiful, again, one of the best games that I have ever played and is certainly worth a play. Don't judge the game before playing it and try not to go into it with anger about the spoilers in mind or a belief that Joel is an invincible hero that is not susceptible to change, otherwise your experience will be ruined. If you do go into it with an open mind as Troy Baker said, I am confident that you will love the game.

Finished the game on Hard in about three weeks. In the first Last of Us game, I got uncomfortable about getting practically no choice but to go murder lots of people. This time it was even more uncomfortable practically all the time, but I think they managed to make it more intentional and clear -- it's not supposed to be comfortable.

This time it was even more uncomfortable practically all the time, but I think they managed to make it more intentional and clear -- it's not supposed to be comfortable.

So I actually preferred the plot in part 2, although I'd say I was more driven by the thrill of the insane, gratuitous, brutal action scenes than anything else. I simply love the chaotic mess that most fights turn into. But rest assured the story is solid enough, and NOT "full of gaping plot holes" or failing at "subverting expectations".

Gameplay-wise, I'd prefer larger sandboxes to these completely pre-scripted events. There certainly would have already been enough content in the game to make it a more open place with some optional side missions etc. If I had my way, in hard mode you'd need to go through a lot of optional missions and find all the "bonus rooms" to get everything upgraded, to have a chance at proceeding through some harder bosses. Now instead you'll just have a harder time getting upgrades, because of lesser resources. Fine, that works as a way to make the game harder, but as a competionist, I wasn't too happy to have to start a "new game+" to get everything maxxed out. Of course I appreciate the option, but would have preferred to do it in one run.

Same complaint as the first game: For a game that carries a message of anti-violence (however hypocritical that may be), I'd love to see more options to solve the levels non-lethally, such as zip-tying enemies or taking a hostage. You can kind of take a hostage and hold a gun on someone
for 3 seconds. Not sure if I missed something here, but it seems they just always struggle out of it, unless you kill them almost straight away.

You can still sneak or run through most levels, but that essentially feels like you just skipped them.
And the game doesn't award you for letting those people live. You'll just miss out on the ammo you could have found on them (and the excitement of the fight).

My absolute favourite part was triggering the undead against the live enemies, hiding and letting them kill each other! I was so thrilled about that, and then quite disappointed afterwards, that there was the only that single encounter where you could do that.

Graphically, animatically, cinematographically etc. not even the haters are contesting that it's the best-looking game ever, and runs near-perfect on a standard PS4 (like, what do we need the PS5 for?), so... Even with my small gripes a very solid 10/10 "interactive movie".

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A beautiful and captivating sequel that i really enjoyed to play through. After all the bad news and user critics I was skeptical first, but the experiment Naughty Dog dared turned out really great. Since a main character is murdered brutally in the beginning of the game, the further plot revolves around hate and revenge. By not only playing Elli, but also her opponent, the player can feel both points of view. Most things are not that simple as they seem to be. The game clearly shows that revenge is not a solution and can make things even worse. The graphics turnde out very good, but not great. I expected a little bit more. The levels were created rather open than linear, as it was in the first part. This leads to more interesting levels on the one hand, but a constant fear of overlooking something. The mechanic of playing both opponents was a interesting innovation, but i would have preferred to play both characters alternating rather than consecutively. All in all: A very good game definitely worth playing. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There were some uncomfortable moments when you have to play from other POV. But it is a part of story which eventually makes sense and you get attached to other's motives.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In short, this is the first game in the last 7 years that has managed to cause me so many diverse emotions. Only because she succeeded she deserves 10 (subjectively).
Technically, it is certainly not perfect, but at a more than high level. Graphics, atmosphere, sound, gameplay are all at a more than high level, literally everything.
Questions can arise only to the script and characters.

Questions can arise only to the script and characters. But believe me, playing, gradually, you will receive answers to all questions.
It's hard to talk about the game without spoilers, but I want to talk. I want to talk about her, to discuss. Do you understand? The game that rolled me on the "Emotional Roller Coaster" that I want to discuss! Subjectively, if it is not a masterpiece, then something close to it!

Naughty Dog made a bravely breakthrough from their last great achievement. The first TLOU is an epic and seems unsurpassable. But TLOU2 goes beyond great imagination. As one of the best and greatest interactive art achievements, TLOU2 combines playing games and watching movies seamlessly and inseparable. TLOU2 will have the immortality fame of gaming history.

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
