I decided to write this feed because I don't agree with the ratings of other users. History is not rubbish, it is something different that I liked. And, for the record, there are no trans characters some spoilers were fake. I recommend playing it. Just a note: the name "Iene" does not seem very appropriate to me, I would have preferred the name "Serafiti" in the Italian version of the game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have loved books, movies and video games for my entire 28 year life. Nothing compares to this. The Last of Us Part II is a completely unique experience. I cried, I laughed, I was scared, I cried again. What an incredibly visceral and emotional piece of media. Thanks to the entire team at Naughty Dog and the absolutely spectacular cast of this game.

The story was ok, I mean I liked it but could it be better? Of course. It was to concentrated in vengeance karma choices and missed out the whole point of the first game like did where the virus came from? Is there a cure besides ellie? I mean it has a lot to been seen. But OK I enjoy it. Of course Joel's death was a little forced, serious, Joel was a professional smuggler and he knew very well how to stay low. So he and Tommy putting themselves in that position is unlikely. But I get it, we all get it that Joel was destined to die in this game but it could be a different way. Overall a 7 not a perfect game but maybe a good start to a third part Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As someone who studies literature and writes very often this game saddens me to an unmentionable extent. In stories weather it be books, movies, video games, or any format of entertainment, the thing that drives people to continue watching is the fulfillment of promises that are implied to the consumer. This game not only breaks the promises they make, but the plot is seriously inconsistent, forgetting about promises that have been made entirely; leaving the consumer with this feeling of emptiness. Not to mention, the character arcs are just piss poor writing basically being non-existent. Outside of the writing and story, the game follows has a very dated gameplay system and combat system. It feels primitive at times, even borderline inorganic. To me, this is unacceptable in a triple A studio with the amount of manpower that naughty dog has. The world is beautiful, and the graphics are incredible, but it's overshadowed by lazy story writing, and some message (that isn't even clear by the way) being crammed down your throat. I'm not talking about the LGBT stuff, I couldn't care less about that, there are plenty of fantastic television shows/movies/books that have awesome characters that are LGBT, the problem happens when you make a character LGBT for the SAKE of having an inclusive character. Smh, everyone can tell. You can try to ignore it, but it's like having a scratch you can't quite itch. Why? Because it's forced! If you have a screw, you're not going to pound it into a wall with a hammer, that doesn't make any sense. It's the same thing as characters in any form of entertainment. The characters MUST be consistent with the setting. Your characters are your driving force in whatever plot archetype you've decided to use. These characters also have archetypes that were inconsistent throughout the entire game. Joel's death makes no sense because he is not trusting of other people, as is demonstrated multiple times in the first game. That doesn't mean that trait can't change, but it was never even hinted towards that Joel has changed in such a way. The whole game gets my gears grinding. I'm also pissed off because of the good reviews the game has received. I don't get it. Genuinely. I'm also mad because metacritic blocked the negative reviews of this game for a time, I'm tired of censorship. So, my 0 comes from the terrible story writing in combination with how naughty dog responded to the negative player reviews. This is my personal protest. Expand

    --NO SPOILERS--

I didn't really want to write a review, but I don't want people to think that my review is part of any "review bombing" as this is my genuine and personal opinion of this game after having to sit through over 20 hours of it.

it's a horrible sequel that completely destroys the characters and all the build-up from the first game. It doesn't matter how good the graphics, gameplay, music and all the other technical aspects are, when the story is so unbelievable, unimmersive and riddled with inconsistencies and plot holes. A wise person once said that a good story can save bad art, but good art can't save a bad story. And that should really be the slogan for TLOU2.

It's a Naughty Dog game, and although 70% of its staff has left including the incredibly talented Amy Hennig and Bruce Straley, you can pretty much expect it to LOOK like a masterpiece. And it does. However, take any 10 minute clip from any part of the game and I'll show you 2 plot holes, 4 inconsistencies and overall just lazy and sloppy writing.

Nearly every single piece of dialogue made me think "well, that's dumb" and nearly every action sequence was riddled with plot armor and just straight up stupidity. For instance when Ellie and another person drives their car into the water and instead of just swimming right out through the gaping hole where her car door used to be, it was ripped off earlier, they struggle to get through the driver's side window. What the hell? How was this not pointed out by ANYONE? There are so many stupid details and it just completely breaks any sort of credibility or depth this game has, if it even has any.

I praised the first game so much that people started getting sick of me talking about it. The first game made me interested in art and writing, it was an experience I'll never forget. Like when you watch your favorite movie, listen to your favorite song or read your favorite book. it leaves a mark. That game affected me in a way that very few other media has ever done. Which is why this sequel was such a punch in the gut, and it didn't help that we waited 7 years for it.

And I don't care that there are gay or trans characters in the game. I really couldn't give any less sh*ts. Though, as a bi woman who advocate for trans rights, I can clearly see that most of it is being used as a shield so people will look like bigots once they criticize anything about the game. I also find it very suspicious how even Neil Druckmann said that some of the game testers said they hated the game and that he was prepared for people hating it, and then nearly EVERY "professional" game critic out there gave it a 10/10, which is an INSULT to any video game ever who truly lived up to that score and earned it. It is NOT a 10/10, it is NOT a 0/10. I'd love to give the development team a completely different score; the people who made the animations, the sound, music, the graphics, the combat, the accessibility system - everything was completely awesome, an easy 9-10/10.

But sadly, I don't play video games just for the graphics or the sound. Some of the best games ever created were amazing because of its incredible story, characters, deep lore, world design etc... The graphics and sound are just a wonderful bonus, but you cannot base your entire game upon it. Therefore, because it is a story driven game, I'm going to let the awful story overshadow everything I liked about the technical aspects of the game and give it a 4/10 overall. If it was a standalone with completely new characters whom I hadn't previously been so invested in and cared for so much, maybe I'd go up to a 5 or 6/10, but this is the highly anticipated sequel of one of the most beloved video games in history, which is why the fall is so much longer and harder.

I would not advise ANYONE to pay for this game, at least not at full price. Watch it on Youtube, you'll be saving yourself a lot of money, because it's just not worth it.

I'm truly saddened and disappointed by this and I hope we can see better from the video game industry in the future. Thanks and sorry for any bad English.

At the beginning desire to play had dropped drastically, seeing what had happened to Joel, protagonist of the first game, and that I thought had a much more relevant role within the second part, having started playing completely free from spoilers. But now I'm thankful to have continued to play.
We begin to play with a crazy desire to kill every single one of them, and therefore the player is led to have the same way of thinking as Ellie. And this way of thinking remains until Ellie's "Seattle - Day 3". The part of Abby's story turned out to be a surprise. Until the middle of the first chapter I was completely annoyed to play with Abby and not against her, always thinking of her as an antagonist. But then as the character's decisions turned out to be much more human than Ellie's, and given the reason for Joel's killing, your sense of justice is attacked by the game itself and you start no longer having a hero and an anti-hero, but 2 characters who have lost a lot and continue to lose. The first encounter between Ellie and Abby was crucial for the story and to screw your head even more: Abby spares Ellie and proves even more human than the latter. The false dissolution of the story seemed a little superfluous at the beginning, but then we understand that it was done only to highlight how much Ellie lost in the real ending, where she chooses to save Abby, restoring the bit of humanity that has remained. The epilogue is depressing, but more bittersweet than totally sad: Ellie has lost everything, but has solved the question that led her to this trip: forgive Joel once and for all, leaving the guitar behind. Gustavo Santaolalla's music is the best part of this game: every single moment is accompanied by a track that perfectly represents what is happening: the best two are "The cycle of violence" and "Beyond Desolation"; the latter, played at the epilogue, amazes how amazing "The Path" in the first The Last of Us.
It is the best game of the generation from this point of view and it also runs very well on a regular ps4.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First and foremost i have to say i think it is a very good game but there are some flaws which make me rate the game an 8. The idea of telling the story from two different perspectives is great but the player has to play as Abby for too long. When I saw we went back to play as Abby i was like okay...explain to me what happened i am curious. It is explained quite quickly so I thought after a couple of hours playing as Abby that we would play as Ellie again soon. I love Ellie’s character so much and just felt like i wanted to get through Abby’s part to get back to Ellie. In other words, i felt like playing as Abby took away from the time we would get to play as Ellie. Then I started to realize that we we’re going to see Ellie again much later and that we would have to play as Abby till the point their stories meet again in the theatre. At this point we played for 10+ hours as Abby and then we even had to attack Ellie?? That part i didn’t understand, i feel like we should have just had the cutscene without the combat or the perspective should have changed to Ellie. Hurting Ellie as Abby felt absolutely terrible.

I also felt like the game could have been improved by implementing more flashbacks and backstory before Joel gets killed. Now all the flashbacks were just painful to watch because we already knew what was going to happen, they were still good though but adding more in the beginning would have given us more of the dynamic we loved in the first game. I just loved the atmosphere and vibe of Jackson and I wish there were more scenes there. I would also have loved for Ellie and Dina’s relationship to be more detailed... how did they meet, when did Dina come to Jackson for example. Ellie also writes about her ex-girlfriend Cat, considering she is the first love interest Ellie had after Riley I figured we would see their relationship somewhere in the game but that was unfortunately not the case. Owen and Abby’s relationship seemed to be more in depth and we almost get to learn more about Owen than we learn about Dina.

In the end these are things that I think would have made the game a bit better and scenes which would have nicely balanced against the dark and depressing nature of the game. But i do think the game is good. The final part where we get to see Abby all worn out and sad is fantastically done. Ellie found the closure she was looking for, finally. In that moment Abby was not thinking about revenge anymore, she found closure and was just thinking about surviving and protecting Lev. At the very moment Ellie let’s go of Abby she has forgiven Joel and she can think about good moments with him instead of those horrible flashbacks. That scene with Ellie in the water broke me. Her telling Abby to go and take Lev and just sitting there crying with the beautiful music coming in. And Abby glancing back at Ellie as she sailed away with Lev... that was an emotional scene. It was a depressing ending though with Ellie and Dina basically being broken up... i would have loved to see Ellie reunite with Dina and J.J and then the camera would slowly move away until we have a Birdseye view of Jackson and bam end-credits. Maybe that is to sappy but it would have made the ending a bit more happy haha.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is such a disappointment following TLOU part one. The first game had a lot of flaws but the story and the characters made it one of the best games I have ever played. The second one, rating it half way through, is not focused on the character development or a story but on shoveling you the agenda. The focus is not on a a real life development of a relations between characters but only on gay relationship that starts before the game and does not change even a bit through the game and is overshadowing everything else. It's just flat. The visuals and gameplay are much better than in the first game, but the dull relationship between the girls is very artificial and distracting. It's like this is the only thing that the writers wanted you to take from this game. No development, no character arc nothing. It's just anticlimactic.
edit:ok now finished it and it's just... awful. The story bad story and storytelling is overshadowing the games visuals. Its just terrible. Its not worth your time. This game has nothing to offer. Waste of time even writing about it.

A philological masterpiece about hate. Naughty Dog takes all the elements that made the first part one of the best games ever made and builds on that achieving nearly perfection.

    -Story:
The story is perfect, it just plays with you from the start to the end. You don't know anything the first half of the game, but later in the game, you began slowly to see that appearances are deceiving and you literally didn't know anything about anything.
It takes you through an emotional roller coaster and when you just think that you know something it just slaps your face and gives you the most amazing revelations filled with deep philosophy. These revelations that you will have when playing The Last Of Us Part 2 are often painful, but true and veracious.

This story is one of the darkest and beautiful game stories that I have ever played. On the outer level, the story appears to be depressing and sad, but once you understand fully the philosophy you began to see that the main core of this marvelous piece of art is filled with hope and love.

The story keeps you immersed through your hole play trough, I often found myself screaming at the TV. If you let the game do its thing and let you transposed to its universe it just feels real, you feel every emotional thing that the characters experience, I found myself having tears in my eyes, cried, being filled with happiness, and those big revelations moments felt like being struck by lighting remaining shocked and stunned.
It can't be explained in words, the only way is to experience it, the number of emotions that you feel, I felt during my play trough are overwhelming. After I finished the game I needed a few days off because I couldn't do anything, the greatness of this masterpiece story left me damaged and could not think about anything else.

    -Graphics
The Graphics are astonishing, this graphical fidelity that The Last Of Us Part II touched, by far, beats every other game ever created. The technical achievements and optimizations are amazing. Naughty Dog made the best looking game ever made on old PS4 hardware. This game spits in the face the PC games that run on much powerful hardware and have mediocre graphics. The attention to detail is exquisite, not a thing is left untaught, the animations, the blood every detail is carefully taught and implemented in the game.

    -Gameplay
The gameplay is another place that this game is achieving the ultimate greatness, like the story, the gameplay is perfect, perfect!. Even if you choose to go stealthy and sneak, or go brute force, or just run past your enemies and flank them and escape, you will encounter the most well-crafted game mechanics ever made. The regular enemy feels like real people, having backstories and names, and the AI that drives them is the most real one that I have ever seen. The weapons have a rewarding feeling and when Ellie uses her knife you see the best killing animations ever accomplished.

    -Sound
Sound effects are well executed and contribute to the overall impressiveness of the game. The weapons sound is different based on the location you are. And again the attention to detail is on the next level on the sound branch. If you are paying attention you can hear Ellie breath, the steps, the backpack that is swinging, the ponds that you step in, everything.

    -Conclusion
In conclusion, I want to tell you that you should unquestionably play The Last Of Us Part II, as it took the whole game expectations and set them up to a whole new level, and lays the foreground on what is to come with the next generation of consoles and video games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The best game I have ever played. These people review bombing this game, i don't get it. What? So people are just cool with Joel killling whoever he wants and ripping the cure for humanity away from everyone for his own selfish reasons? That since Joel is such a likable guy, he dosen't deserve, no matter what he does to anybody else, the reckoning that comes his way? Has anyone ever heard the saying, "what go around, comes back around?" The whole point of the story is to take a character who you hate and don't understand in the beginning (Abby), and have the ability as a sensible human being to understand, empathize, and sympathize with that character by the end. To understand why she did what she did. What? Nobody felt bad that Abby's entire life was destroyed when Joel murdered her dad? To the point that she couldn't even be intimate with her love interest, knowing the man that did that is still breathing the same air she is. What makes Joel and Ellie so much better that Abby? Other than the fact that you learn Abby's story last? The whole point of what made Joel such a fascinating character was that he was simultaneously a hero AND a villain. Saving Ellie was hardly a heroic thing to do, even Ellie would have disagreed with it. People need to understand that a major theme of the game was seeing and perceiving events and the world from certain character's point of view. To understand why each character does what they do and makes the decision's that they do. That's called great storythelling. To be able to understand why character's do what they do. Not just forever staying faithful to a villain just because he's a fan favorite. I applaud Naughty Dog for doing this. Bottomline is this, depending on your point of view, Joel Miller was a villain, and he got what was coming to him. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Okay so, when I bought the game, I read the reviews and got scared that it would be terrible. The story was heavily criticized, and so was the gameplay. However, upon playing the game i realized that most what everyone complained about was the fact that they lost Joel. They acted as if he was a Saint but in reality he wasn't. Yes I loved the character but he did bad things a d and the game did justice. The story wasn't even bad. Only problems I had with it is how easy Abby turned on the WLFs, the fact that they had Abby kill Joel in the first couple hours felt like a let down, as they portrayed Joel as a part of the story in the trailers which felt like an advertisement lie.

Asides from that. The game play was more than awesome, the gore levels are very realistic to compared to other games, the characters are actually good. Personally i feel like lots of those negative reviews stem from homophobic reasons

Idk why fans are mad, fans even don't know why they're mad lmao, the gameplay and graphics are top notch as always, the music and sound design is 100/100, yes i admit the story could've been completely different and would've pleased us more, but with a setting like last of us's world "Pleasing" shouldn't exist. So it's obvious they would give the story a more realistic approach. My goooooood. I didn't thought, when I went to my electronic retailer and bought it, that it would be so tough in the end. I needed like 1 month for my playthrough, because sometimes there was so much storytelling, I just didn't want to go trough it so fast (that doesn't mean it's short, it's a hell of a long game).
Every penny is worth the time you spend in this artwork.

This is a tricky one to review without spoilers but I think I can manage. So I was a MASSIVE fan of the original. In fact it's the only modern naughty dog game I like. So I was pretty hyped for this until the bomb dropped... Then I was worried and almost didn't buy it but on launch day I woke up and 20 min later I had bought it and started playing.

The thing about this series is everything that makes it good is story based. The gameplay is very basic and easy stealth. I can literally play on hard and get through every section using stealth kills and that includes the ones where they basically try to force gun fights. So it's not the greatest as far as gameplay goes. I'd give gameplay a 5/10 which means average on my scale.

Now the story..the potential saving grace of destroyer of scores. It's both bad and good but unfortunately mostly bad. Don't get me wrong, there are still moments that feel genuine and some dialog that is good. The problem is it's far outweighed by genuinely bad writing.

I don't care about genders or someone's preference in partner. So that's not the issue so please don't even go there. No...my problem with the story is it's just bad. It's badly written, it's poorly paced and the important moments feel forced. Basically things happen more for shock value than they do for the benefit of the story.

In the original it was the story that pushed me to beat it. I HAD to beat it as quickly as I could because the story had me hooked. Without that being the case in this one I had to force myself to play which is why it took me till 3 days ago to beat it and then collect my thoughts on the whole thing.

    I hate it...I wish I didn't, I really do. It's unfortunate really.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, where to begin? Well, lets start with the good.

Graphics and sound desing is amazing, for a console. But we dont play games for their graphics now, do we? That would be like watching adult movies for plot. We all know we dont watch adult movies for plot.

Gameplay seems to me mostly unchanged from first game, with few minor tweaks. Not necessarily good or bad things, its just how things are. In story driven game, its really not that important, unless its infuriating towards the user.

What matters most in story driven game is story.

And oh boi, here we go.

Fact that they kill such major such as Joel for cheap drama, in such unsatysfying way, with that character acting way differently than in the last game, is your first indication for whats in store for you.
Then we have Ellie. She cant forgive someone who makes her "bigot sandwiches", or those 100 henchmens which she kills on her quest for revenge, but she spares the one person responsible for all her pain. Bravo Niel.
Abby is just... unlikable and hypocrite. Lets leave it at that.
And entire message of the story just falls short. Revenge is bad? Abby got her revenge and even though she faced some hardships, she got away in the end AND killed person responsible for biggest emotional loss of her life. She won.
Ellie? Ellie kills 100 henchmen on her way to Abby, yet when she finally is so close avenging Joel, she sudenlly thinks that "revenge bad". ffs.

And then we have all the controversy around ratings on metacritic.
People screamign that 0/10 ratings are not valid becasue people couldnt have played through entire story, yet people giving 10/10 ratings, those are totally valid and believable.
Then we have metacritic deleting bad ratings, because they are given by bots, yet they leave 10/10 ratings which are copypasta of těo sentences saying "Amazing game. Another masterpiece from Naughty Dog."
I bet you, go into 10/10 ratigns and browse for 10 minutes. You will find at least 50 of them.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’d like to state I didn’t see any leaks or watch any reviews before playing and finishing the game. It’s not that it’s a horrible a game. The gameplay is smooth and great. Visuals are realistic, horrifying and beautiful. But it didn’t feel like a balanced sequel to The Last of Us.

Given the controversial decision Joel made at the end of the first game, I was expecting to lose people and **** to go down, but the manner in which the story was delivered and executed felt rushed, overwhelming, manipulative and confusing. Every moment I thought I was adjusting with the character I was playing, something horrible would happen that would give me emotional whiplash and often without a lot context. Maybe that’s what the developers intent was, but I still think there needs to be balance so the player doesn't become entirely emotionally disengaged.

In the beginning, there was little time to reestablish the characters and their personalities since the ending of the last game. The plot hits the ground running yet you're left in the dark with even what's going on with some of the main characters. I don’t think playing as Abby worked well halfway. Would've preferred playing her before she killed Joel or not at all. It's not that I wasn't willing to step in her shoes, but that it didn't matter how many hours I played her because of how she was introduced. Her first impression was "Joel's killer." It's BIG ask of your audience to try to overcome that. It seems Ellie doesn't even overcome that necessarily herself, but that she decides to forgive Joel and not take the resentment out on Abby by killing her too. I don't hate this game, but I feel very mixed, unresolved feelings on its execution.

Overall, I would've liked for this plot to be more spread out and had its time taken or even separated into two different games or maybe not even told at all. There was just build up truly missing in some areas for it to feel well-paced and balanced with how much bad you're expecting your players to consume and expect it to not demotivate or discourage them.

Edit: I've brought down my rating because this game triggered me a lot regarding the lack of censorship with sensitive (trauma, murder, abuse) content. I am shocked that sony approved of this game. There is something truly disturbing and sinister to think women want to be represented like this - unhinged, emotionally unaware, unable to navigate trauma in a more rational way, etc. Post-apocalypse shouldn't turn women into psychopaths.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Is metacritic done trying to protect this game now? Wow. Bravo for allowing users to leave user reviews lol.

Oof. What a mess. Loaded to the brim with agendas and what can only be described as "woke-ness" at the expense of the game and its story.

90% of the enemies in the game are straight white males (the worst of them are crazy Christians, of course). Shocker. Dreary to the point of making BvS look like Sesame Street. Violent and brutal simply for the sole purpose of making the player uncomfortable. Some of the better things about The Oppression Olympics Part II are:

Outstanding graphics - Absolute top tier visual presentation.
    Sound - Brilliant audio design

That's about it. Gameplay is OKAY, its not bad, but like the first game the main draw here is the story and that's the problem: the story sucks.

The characters do things that either don't make sense or are entirely out of character. Example: Joel lowering his guard and trusting a group of "I-hate-you" faced strangers and giving them his real name. Then they kill him. Yes Joel, the guy you went on an incredible, emotional adventure with dies like a b**ch early into the game. Unbelievable. Then you spend some time as Ellie, an 80lb girl that regularly overpowers 240lb, fully grown men. Lol. Then you get to play as Abby, the woman (???) who kills Joel, for a good part of the game. None of these characters are likeable. Not even Ellie. The soul of this series is dead.

This is a game that revels in its ugliness and its misery. It delights in its portrayal of cruelty and brutality without acknowledging its repercussions. It prides itself in portraying the absolute worst in people, all the time, without end to the point of destroying any likeability that any of these characters could have had. It's bleak, poorly written, pointlessly violent and excessively woke.

There's also a "love" scene between Neil Druckman's digital avatar and the "woman" Abby.

I don't want to think about this game or about anything Naughty Dog might make in the future. Disgusting game, made by disgusting people. Horrible experience.

While it's instantly obvious that there are graphical enhancements over the original due to the platform, the standout difference is the story. And it's polarizing. Whereas TLOU, one could argue, had a happier overall ending with Joel and Ellie remaining together to form a father/daughter-style relationship in Jackson, TLOU2's story takes a darker and more complex path toward resolution.

No, the story is not poorly written nor are major decisions at odds with the character development that takes place throughout the story. However, many of the negative reviews are from players who disagreed with those choices. TLOU2 is not for everyone because it operates in "shades of grey" - love, hate, revenge, empathy, forgiveness, loss...none of these emotions is dealt with in a black & white way throughout the story. In my opinion, that makes the journey that Ellie and Abby go through a much richer experience vs. the original TLOU (which I also loved).

The first game included an amazing world, immersive storyline, interesting (main and side) characters, and excellent pacing. As much as it pains me to say this, The Last of Us II definitely fails to deliver on these expectations and standards set by the first game. Part II is riddled with plot holes, questionable character choices, boring side characters, and terrible pacing. The revenge plot is so poorly executed, and the writing is just overall lazy. Although the graphics, animation, sound, and gameplay are amazing, the true appeal of a Last of Us game is the story. In the first game, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time, and I was thoroughly looking forward to the next thing. In this game, I was sad, annoyed, and bored. It seems like everything (story-wise) that was good in the first game was completely sacrificed in this one for the new characters. The characters we know and love in the first game are deconstructed to fit the lazy storyline. I was so unattached to the story, that by the end of certain segments, I would have completely forgotten what I was doing before, which characters had died already, and what characters’ names were. Usually, I am EXTREMELY aware of these story elements. I cannot believe that after so much patience and excitement, this is what the franchise has come to. I am utterly heartbroken as I know the insane potential this second game had, even though a sequel was not needed.

Some people tell me “oh, you didn’t understand the story” or “that’s what the game wants you to feel”. But I don’t believe I need to dig that deep to tell myself that this game was good. I’ve never done that for any other game I’ve played, and I won’t give any special treatment to this one. If you’re wondering whether its worth it to get this game, get it if it’s on sale for $20 or less just to experience it if you really want. This coming from someone who’s favorite game of all time is the first Last of Us. As far as I can tell, The Last of Us Part II does not exist.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is a flawed masterpiece that I think will go down in history as a daring and defining moment in gaming.

First of all this is a 20+ hour game that got review bombed on the day of release. You can pretty much throw out any review dated June 19th (the day it came out), good or bad. Any review that gives this game under a 5/10 because of “plot holes” is also an absolute joke. This game isn’t notable for its plot holes, it’s notable for the surprising direction the narrative takes and some narrative choices that fans won’t like.

So many people are reviewing this game based on what they wished the story would be, not what it actually is. I don’t agree with the backlash against this game, but I definitely get it. Look, Joel is a great character and Troy Baker’s voice and motion performance is one of the best in gaming history. His voice has that weary gravitas that fits in perfectly to the post-apocalyptic setting.

Like many people, I hated Abby in the beginning of the game (how can you not!?), disliked her at the start of her chapter, and grew to find her a very compelling character. Did I love the story from start to finish? No I felt it dragged in the middle, particularly in parts of Abby’s campaign. Nevertheless, this game contains incredible world building - Seattle, Santa Barbara. Now the world has been expanded we can see how this story could continue for another decade of games. There’s so much more to this world than the world of The Last of Us part 1: rival factions the WLF, the Seraphites ("scars”); the survivors in Jackson, Wyoming; little **** head gangs like the Rattlers; hints at a possibly rebuilt Fireflies. The Last of Us told a tighter story; TLOU2 lays the groundwork for an entire world.

The gameplay plays like a true sequel: it builds on the mechanics of the first one with even more variety of weapons to craft, new mechanics like crawling, and different upgrade trees for the two main characters. The guitar playing is pretty neat too! The graphics and sound design are incredible; a perfect send-off for this generation of console games.

Even those who don’t love the plot have to admit (if they actually played the game through) that this has some of the most incredible gaming moments ever. I won’t give too many details away, but there’s a scene where Joel takes Ellie to Wyoming Museum, and it was one of the most incredible scenes I’ve ever seen in a game.

The game also does a masterful job of introducing compelling characters. Jesse, Dina, Abby, Owen and Lev are all fantastic new characters - many of whom could figure into possible sequels. You may hate Abby in the beginning but I bet you won’t by the end! In fact there's too much story and too many new characters to appreciate in one playthrough; this game’s depth would lend itself to multiple playthroughs.

The game isn’t perfect. It’s a bit too long in parts, the plot drags a bit around the middle before picking up again towards the end. As pointed out in reviews, you do develop "kill fatigue" by the end - obviously intentioned by designers but it's still real. The dissonance between your characters' realizations that revenge and killing is a cycle that goes on forever unless you change and grow, vs. the fun mechanics of mowing down a room of bad guys with guns and explosives - I don’t know how to grapple with that one.

You could also say the gameplay mechanics aren't different enough from TLOU part 1, but then again think of the development across four Uncharted games; the improvements in TLOU2 are pretty solid for a direct sequel.

So, looking back on the game - as I was wrapping up the campaign, in a sense I was pushing forward, exhausted, trying to finish the game. But once it was over, and Ellie was playing her guitar (or trying to at least), I couldn’t wait to experience the story again.

Good game fantastic graphics, animation and lighting. The first half of the game is great part's of the second half are good and the ending was a little underwhelming. If you're a fan of the first one you probably already bought it but if you haven't I'd suggest to get it while it's on sale.

There is an important message in this game about the futility of violence and revenge - ironically the infected come across as the most humane group in the game. Graphically its gorgeous, gameplay wise not much has changed but the ai are pretty realistic!
The story I found un-enjoyable, i was coming to terms with it in the first 10 hours and it was going okay, but after i just didn't want to play anymore. I forced myself to finish it and get it over with at the end.

The short time you spend with the characters in part 1 were so impressionable, but the characters in 2 just didnt have this power behind the writing and the time you spent with them.

The fights are scary, brutal and really intense. I can only compare it with Resident Evil 7 played with my VR headset. You do not want to die in this game - really you don’t as the consequences are breaching the limits of pain. The survival-horror-action gameplay is well known, however improved enough to make it fresh and captivating. The enemies are sometimes really clever, and other times downright stupid, which can kick you out of the immersion. Not always could I agree with the decisions of the characters and they carried me from frustration to despair. ND made very brave choices and I want to say thank you to all dogs. As far as I am concerned I am still enjoying family life.
However, the game is not perfect and the story cannot reach the quality of LOU1. The main weak points I felt are:
    1) You cannot alter the fate of characters or change the story in any way. That was also not possible in LOU1, but the main theme of hatred and absolution asks for it and the game would have profited a lot from a flexible storyline.
    2) There is a strong disconnect between the story and gameplay. Its an issue shared with many other games (like Uncharted, TombRaider...) The characters don't fit their very own actions during gameplay.
This disconnect reaches a whole new level in LOU2 when story and gameplay collide. In a single phrase: the theme of hatred and absolution does not fit 35 hours of bloody urban warfare.

    Story: 7/10

Let me start by saying that I purchased the TLOU (PS3), TLOU:Left Behind (PS3) and even TLOU: Remastered on PS4, because of what a masterpiece the original game truly was. The story, graphics & animation, audio & voice acting, character development and gameplay all contributed to many playthroughs that also made me commit to my 1st Platinum trophy in the PSN.

As you may have guessed, I pre-ordered TLOU2 (Collector's Edition) and avoided the leaks, spoilers and reviews until I had completed the game. And now I understand all the hate and anger. Aside from technical improvements (graphics, level designs, animation, audio, etc.), TLOU2 fails miserably in its promise of a revenge theme that was highly marketed by the company and the media. And for those "professional critics" that argue that it's a subset of fans that don't like the game's progressive direction or acceptance of LGBT is absurd. It has nothing to do with that. As I mentioned earlier, I even purchased TLOU:Left Behind which clearly established Ellie's sexual orientation and it did not hinder me, a 35 yr old straight male, from enjoying the DLC because the prequel's storyline, gameplay and LGBT characters felt right at home in the survival pandemic world.

    ****** Spoiler Alert ******

In the 2nd half of TLOU2, we get introduced to a new LGBT character (Lev) experiencing gender dysphoria within a community. Lev's background story with the Scars could've worked perfectly but Naughty Dog made a poor decision by pairing him with the character that everyone despised (Abby) and was forced to play with. It's also ridiculous to believe that these two characters would trust each other rather so quickly and willingly considering the history between their rival factions. I would've rather had Lev as an ally that worked alongside Ellie on her revenge tour. Needless to say, the general plot is unfathomable and fragmented into different timelines reminiscent of Westworld (which was probably suggested by Halley Gross) but is poorly executed with pacing issues. The characters and the supporting cast were uninteresting and remained weak throughout the game as many of them make inexplicable decisions or choices. This all traces back to the the beginning where Abby just so happens to run into Joel and Tommy. The mere fact that Joel (and Tommy) would help a complete stranger and follow back to her base to be killed so easily disrespects the intelligence of players and true fans of the original TLOU. We spent countless hours playing as Joel who was a rugged smuggler, shrewd survivor and proficient killer but never a schmuck. Naughty Dog's lazy team of writers then decides that both Tommy and Ellie's lives are spared after their encounter with Abby just so they can conveniently advance the game's plot for revenge. It's inconceivable in a prey or be preyed survival world that Abby's crew would allow having any loose ends that may set up for their own demise later down the road.

And that's it. It's that simple. The storyline is disjointed, pointless and unrealistic from the beginning to the end. Revenge doesn't just slip from your fingers, the developers force you to give up, crying in a fetal position while you let your nemesis escape freely. And the nerve of them have a New Game+ is beyond me. I never wanted to finish a game so quickly so that I could resell my copy - and that is why you still buy physical (not digital) copies kids. After completing this frustrating journey, you are filled with nothing but depression, anger and disappointment. If this was what Naughty Dog and Neil Druckmann wanted fans to truly experience emotionally, then mission accomplished.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us part II is the best game I’ve ever played. Not only the tecnical aspects of the game are incredible (graphics, playability, etc) but the experience and story are amazing. Before this game, I have never been so imersed in a game universe to the point that I think about it all day long. It is definitely not for every one: if you are close minded and expect a game that gives you a hero and a villain, don’t even waste your time. The Last of Us part II teaches you that everyone has a good and a bad side. Unlike most reviews that I read, I don’t hate Abby. I actually like her, and that doesn’t change the fact that I loved Joel and that I love Ellie. The two girls live in an environment that encourages them to be violent and seek vengeance, and that is all that they know. Joel screwed up when he killed the surgeon, and even though killing is never ok, Abby had her reasons for wanting Joel dead. Unliked Ellie who seeked vengeance at all costs and killed EVERYONE, Abby not only once but twice let Ellie go, since she only wanted Joel’s life. They both were very violent and in the end kinda got what they caused to others. Abby lost every single friend, got caught by that gang and almost died, and in the end even lost her dignity when Ellie almost killed her. On the same way, Ellie had the chance to put her family first and live peacefully, but she didn’t and again screwed up because Dina herself said she wouldn’t put up with it anymore. I really believe that they are both very alike, and both have a really bright side (abby saving the kids; ellie with her family) and a dark side, that unfortunately caused the death of Joel, Jesse, Owen, Mel and Nora (I hate them both but you get the point), and others. Lastly, I would like to congratulate the people that made this game, the whole story was perfect (even though I almost **** my pants fighting those zombies). It was a very realistic story and that is why it’s so sad and divides people. Thanks for reading! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There is some good things in this game, graphics, presentation, acting. However non of this stuff over rides the major flaws. The biggest issue for me was Ellie’s journey was terrible and riddled with plot holes. Someone needs to tell me why, after mowing down tons of bad guys who literally had nothing to do with Joel’s death Ellie suddenly has second thoughts when she reaches her targets who took part in the killing of Joel. Oh no I had to beat a lady with a pipe to get the info I needed.. take a look at the morality here. I’m what... I just stabbed a fire poker through a guys head who was just doing his job and walking his dog. Immersion never happens for me as I never found Abby a like able character.. Joel’s decisions leading to his death made no sense, he wouldn’t trust a group of people he didn’t know. The ending had 0 satisfaction, as Ellie makes some decisions that are questionable and never gets her revenge. And what developer intentionally makes a sequel he knows his fans will dislike makes no sense

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Honestly, the negative reviews that complain about Joel dying really didn't understand the story. If you stopped playing just because your white male hero died, you completely didn't understand or didn't want to understand the story. If you didn't want to play as Abby, you didn't understand or didn't want to understand the story. The story was deep, complicated, and let two young women be complete characters without needing to be a man's sidekick. The only issue for me was Ellie giving up everything just because Tommy stopped by to whine about his sob story; that made no sense and turned her back into the cliché 'daughter', the female character in video games who only does things because they're motivated by a dude. Other than that, the surroundings were beautiful, the acting was amazing, and the violence was gruelling, which is what it was supposed to be in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Well done, Naughty Dog. If you were looking for Red Dead, Saints Row or GTA, you should've bought that instead. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The last of us 2, a game that divided the gaming community into two camps, people who were not saturated with the atmosphere of the post-apocalypse, were not moved by the ingenious plot and interesting interactions of the characters. And others who have experienced all of the above on their own skin. What is the ending, because of which the game now has such bad ratings associated with the stupidity of players who cannot get out of their comfort zone and understand that this game is not a familiar story of revenge, but a deeper one. The players at the end thought that Ellie had to kill Abby in order to keep the concept that Ellie had followed throughout the game, but during the game, people like Ellie cannot understand that Ellie's main enemy is not Abby, but her resentment against herself, due to the fact that all the game was rejected by Joel, and when she lost him she could not apologize. This is a brilliant game that was with such a deep meaning that many people simply did not understand it. Expand

It is with great disappointment and pain that I rate this game as it is. The Last of Us 1 is one of my favourite video games of all time. Its storytelling and characters are still unrivaled to this day. But The Last of Us 2 falls short of almost everything that made the original great.
I will mainly address what most gamers pick up TLOU2 for: its story and characters. Firstly the story.
The central theme of the game is revenge, or rather the futility of it. It is a good theme to explore and it does tie nicely to how the first game ended. The way that the story is told, the rationale for certain events and the overall story are, for the most part, good. They are grounded and believable, and you can relate to them. The story is also handled very maturely. While some people have said that it feels pointless, I personally understand why the story had to end the way it did. The narrative is paced out quite nicely, except for some parts which can feel a little drawn out. Overall, I would say the story deserves an 8/10.
So why am I giving the game a 5/10? Because of the characters. They are undoubtedly some of the worst that I have seen in a narrative driven game. They are so flawed in the executions that they actually undo whatever good that the story does.
The characters in this game has almost no identifiable traits. The story opens with Ellie being cold and distant towards Joel, and it is never explained why (for people who have played the game, this scene takes place before Ellie found out what Joel did). During flashback sequences where Ellie is with Joel, that’s when the characters shine the most. You can feel the bond between them, just like it was in the first game. But when Ellie is by herself, she shows almost no emotion. You just cannot relate to her. You can try to rationalize it from the events in the game, but if you have to do that then the characterization has already failed. You cannot relate to her motivation, even when it is spelled out for you. The rest of the characters have even less motivation to do anything. Dina, Ellie’s lover, is shown to be a mere acquaintance, who flirted with Ellie and kissed her during a party. A few days later, Dina “ran away” with Ellie, telling her “Where you go, I go”. The same for Jesse. He has a couple of exchanges with Ellie at the start of the game, which indicated that they have no close bonds. Yet he turns up halfway through the game, proclaiming that he couldn’t let Ellie risk her life on her own. The game throws these characters at you and basically tell you that you have to like them, without giving you any reason.
Let’s talk about character traits. Dina, Jesse, Abby, Abby’s friends, the people that Abby met… What do they like? What do they dislike? What are their traits? How do they react in a given situation? These characters are cardboard cutouts with names and no identifiable traits. Take a look at Tess, or Henry, or David, or Bill, or Marlene in the original TLOU. Those characters are fleshed out in the first minute that they appear on screen. Tess, in her opening scene, showed exactly what kind of person she is. Tough, pragmatic and not one to take things lying down. After 4-5 hours with Dina, I have no idea who she is as a character. She doesn’t get angry, or sad, or happy, or anything. The only thing that I remember is that she would like to have a farm. The same for Jesse. Or any of Abby’s friends. You could change their name and 3D model and the narrative would not be affected one bit. Abby and Ellie, the main characters, are fleshed out just a little more but that’s not saying much. Aside from their obvious and in-your-face anger because of the main story arc, there are no nuance to them. They are at best one dimensional characters.
To make things worse, there is an overemphasis on LGBT themes and traits. That in itself is not wrong but it is just too much on the nose. It gets jarring with the settings and the overall narrative without even adding anything to the story. You have a somber story about loss and revenge, set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, and somehow, LGBT rights and representation has to be shoehorned in. Let’s compare it to my favourite LGBT character of all time, Sophia Burset in Orange is the New Black (played by real life transgendered actress Laverne Cox). Her existence in the series wasn’t for diversity sake. It was to tell her story, her struggle as a father her son, her struggle as a transgender person in prison. But her being transgender wasn’t her character trait. It was her sassiness, her flaws, her love for her son.
And so, all this adds up to an overall story where events unfold and you cannot care less about how they affect the characters because you cannot relate to them at all. I didn’t care that the events were shocking or dangerous. I didn’t care which character lived or died. And that’s the problem with TLOU2.

The Abby arc seems that is never ending and that's where my biggest problem with this game is. I didn't sympathize with Abby until the end of the game, but I did understand the reasons for her actions. In this world there are no heroes, everyone is just a survivor, no good or bad, so in my opinion Joel's death was justified. It's a good game, just cut the Abby part in half and add some Joel - Ellie gameplay and cutscenes and it's going to improve a lot.

It's not perfect but is not the piece of trash that everyone is saying.
