This game is a masterpiece, the graphics, and gameplay is very smooth. The tension when you have zombies in the same room as you is frightening. The story has many turns and you to play the game more, I loved this game, and I’ve accepted that Abby isn’t a bad person, Joel made mistakes, and it was his fault he died. Expand

"After reading the kind of online fan fiction that has been written about Joel and Ellie, we vow to never make a sequel to The Last of Us. - Naughty Dog" The Last of Us Part II does to the original game what American Psycho 2 and S. Darko did to American Psycho and Donnie Darko, respectively. This game is an abortion clinic dumpster fire.

The Last of Us Part II, is once again a heart aching journey of loss, love, sacrifice, anger, forgiveness and so much more in an emotionally heavy story and gameplay. It puts the players in completely uncharted land to help deliver a story that heavily questions our motives, our reality and our feelings.

The Last of Us Part II is a masterpiece.

EDIT: Ok, so I finished the game, and decided to change my rating from a 9 to a 10. I had some complaints about the menus and the HUD, at first, but then I later learned that I could resolve those issues with the more obscure "Accessibility" settings. Also, the first game has one of my all-time favorite stories in video games, but I might like the second game's story even more. SoEDIT: Ok, so I finished the game, and decided to change my rating from a 9 to a 10. I had some complaints about the menus and the HUD, at first, but then I later learned that I could resolve those issues with the more obscure "Accessibility" settings. Also, the first game has one of my all-time favorite stories in video games, but I might like the second game's story even more. So emotional and so well done. I heard spoilers before I played the game, but some of the spoilers were inaccurate. Most of the complaints against those spoilers were motivated by bigotry, which is kind of funny now that the spoilers have been discredited. For example, I heard that Abby was a transgender person transitioning from female to male. Nope, she is just muscular and badass, which fits her setting and story exceptionally well. I never liked femme fatales, anyway. They aren't believable. Abby is very believable. Have an open mind. Play this game.

I just want to add my voice to those who are calling out the review-bombers, while being as vague as I possibly can be. It's true, this game is great and it's being attacked by triggered snowflakes. I don't feel the need to talk about gameplay too much, really. Did you like the first one? You'll like this one, then. There are significantly bigger battle arenas, more stealth techniques, etc. Think of Halo 1 vs. Halo 2. Halo 1 was innovative, while 2 didn't innovate so much. Instead, it refined and amped up the style of the first one. Anyway, what I really want to talk about is the "politics" surrounding it.

Some of the major themes behind the original story include things like healthy and unhealthy ways of coping with loss, dealing with difficult truths, and the subversion of expectations. That is exactly what people are getting with this story and these characters as well. The same things that made the ending of the first game such a gut-punch are all here to punch you in the gut again. Sorry, the game doesn't follow some formulaic, Marvel-style character arc. Some people find that **** boring. Sorry that some characters that you probably love are going to get **** on by newer characters. What did you expect from a sequel? A ten-hour campaign about how everything is going great for everybody? It's a game about a **** zombie apocalypse. Things get rough, LIKE THE FIRST GAME. This game isn't going to hold your hand through a cookie-cutter adventure. Like the first game, it will challenge your sense of what should be and what should not be.

Maybe you are uncomfortable with certain character traits that could possibly be considered "PC" by an "SJW?" Well, guess what? Whether you like it or not, those kinds of people exist. They are human, and they can have compelling motivations. Maybe you don't like the fact that they exist? Too bad, because they do. I'm sorry that you don't want to empathize with a type of human whose existence slightly disrupts your worldview. But really, it would be healthy for you to try to empathize, regardless of your personal beliefs. In the first game, I didn't like the existence of the fungus zombies, the cannibals, or Joel's choice at the end. But that stuff is there and you just have to learn to deal with it if you want to play the game. But it's those types of things that made the story/characters so compelling and memorable. The second game also forces you to face more hard truths about what morality is and what happens when there is a lack of it.

I haven't even finished the game, and there have already been three separate cutscenes that made me choke up a bit. I don't do that too much. Even the positive reviews I have seen have complained about the "lack of character development." They either don't know what it is or have no heart/soul. Surely what they mean to say is, "I don't like the way the characters developed." Because character development is definitely there, and it is done well. I can see why people may not like certain plot points, but from an objective perspective, this is good art. This is a great example of video games as an effective and meaningful storytelling tool. On top of that, it's just a really great game to play.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Finally played the whole game and wanted to give a short but honest review. I was a big fan of the first one, so I came to the game with really high expectations and it really delivered. The gameplay was amazing and the curveball of playing a little under half of the campaign as Abby was a wrlcomed surprise. The game has no good guys or bad guys. Just people who are consumed by vengeance. What made me not give a higher score is that the game dragged a little bit at the end. But this game is an experience and should be played as probably the last great PS4 game (have not played Ghost of Tsushima yet). Don’t listen to the trolls and the hate, play the game! Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I’m going to keep this short and simple. The gameplay, graphics and level design are great. The story, however, is pure drivel. Killing off Joel was a bold move, I’ll give the writers that. The death needed to be earned, but the writers failed at this epically. Playing the first half of the Ellie arc was decent storytelling and progression. A revenge tail that I was invested in. The second half of the game was a slog. I hated Abby and every character in the second half was contrived and boring. I didn’t care about a single one of them. The only joy I got was when Abby would die (sometimes I would just let it happen). The ending is one of the worst in video game history. Ellie murders hundreds of people and a dog you are forced to kill, but doesn’t kill Abby at the end...GTFO! Leaves her girlfriend (the only part of the story i liked was their relationship) and baby to get one final chance at revenge. Goes through hell again only to free Abby, immediately try to kill her and then almost as quick let her go. I’ve seen failed tv pilots with more story arc and a satisfy finish then this poorly written garbage. Naughty Dog should have hired real writers (movie script, novels) to finish this game. Anybody who tells you this story is more then drivel is simple in the brain period. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Here’s the thing. Everyone’s complaining about the game and the story, and I can sorta understand why. But the last of us 2 has a story. I rather liked it. It just doesn’t care if you like how the story goes, and that’s where a lot of people’s issue lies. It isn’t meant to be a happy story, it isn’t meant to be a “all nicely tied up/satisfying” story. And that’s ok. Not all story’s are happy, not all endings are. Games are stories. They tell the story they want to, regardless of wether or not it’s the story YOU wanted it to be. I think this game emphasizes that pretty well. And it doesn’t take away from the game being great. It’s a fun game, with a lot of memorable moments. People just don’t like that it isn’t the story THEY wanted. That’s all. Expand

The is the single most perfect game I have ever played, from a game play perspective. And the worst game I have ever played from a story perspective. The choice to make a villain out of our hero and a hero out of the games villain is stupid, lazy, and ultimately gross. The decision to then attempt to make the game critic proof is laughable.

TLOU2 is a gut wrenching, depressing **** game. When the credits rolled I sat in silence and stared at my tv for a solid ten minutes devoid of emotion. The game doesn’t make you feel good. It doesn’t cater to fan service. It’s not a copy of the first game. It is a gripping, realistic take on a story of vengeance in its most primal and unflattering form. However there's nothing groundbreaking from a mechanical standpoint, it all functions as you'd expect (for better and worse).

Where this game earns it's rating is in it's presentation and narrative. This is by far one of the most impressive games I've played when it comes to visual/audio design, this goes from environmental design all the way through to voice acting and foley work. There are some truly jaw dropping moments of beauty (and horror) throughout this game and i can't find any major fault with the game on this front.

However where this game will sink or swim is in it's narrative. There's no question it's a divisive story and a lot of your reception to the game will depend on you're ability to "roll with the punches" of the story until it's conclusion. It's not perfect, the pacing sags in the middle due to a certain narrative choice . Said choice will also be a challenge to players ability to empathise that some people will be unable to overcome (through no fault of their own).

I can understand why people dislike the story, however for me the story beats struck home and the underlying theme of the narrative really resonated with me. Hence the strong positive rating.

The story...well there's a lot of room for improvement, even if just by changing the order or some events would have made things better, the killing of joel right at the beginning of the game seems to be the reasoning for hate and anger, i get it, i also didnt want to play as the character who just killed my favorite character in the story. But that doesn't make it a bad game. Ive played through the story twice already and im almost finished platinum trophy. While theres a few thing that should have been changed, the gameplay along with storytelling is not horrible. Its worth the purchase to play. Dont listen to the blind hate. Games like this are to tell a story, not appeal to your personal wants. It does a good job of continuing from the 1st game, even if it makes you angry. But if you think about it, only a good game can make you so angry at the death of someone you like. Expand

I am not sure why anyone would want to experience a 25 hour long, nihilistic, black hole of a narrative in the first place, never mind return to it for a second helping.
Which sucks because everything else is so beautifully done in this game. Environments, character animations, combat mechanics and sound design are probably some of the best I have experienced in my past 30 years of gaming.
All of these elements scream for second and third play-through but at this stage I don't think I could stomach replaying the first game. Which speaks volumes, as I have loved going back to it at least once a year since finding out that the video game medium can truly deliver a complex, nuanced narrative on par with books and television.
The Last of Us 2 however, in my opinion, does not deliver anything remotely as complex or thought provoking as the first game.
It is a painful, apathy inducing grind of watching underdeveloped characters getting brutally killed in vivid detail by other characters, who's natures are not so subtlety subverted to deliver a message:

"See here player. All this blood and rage and sadness that we have made you participate in. It really isn't worth it. Revenge is an empty pursuit."

I have gleaned more wisdom from a cat poster than this bizarre experience.

I disregarded the leaks and played with an open mind and with a knowledge of unkown as to what is to be offered (this will give more of a shock factor when playing). The game offers some very crazy plot twists and overall changes to the world, interactions and characters we once knew and loved. As I played and finished the game I can understand the point of view of many angry fans, however I have found that Naughty dog developers came into this with a message and certain goal that would forever change a deep and loveable story into a dark and twisted one while also changing the way we see games, characters and interact with moral choices. Everything within this game had consequences for every action, a factor that most video games never take into account. the whole concept is new and unheard of and whenever something industry changing comes along so will haters which is why the controversy is common. Now focusing more on the story and gameplay and graphic. I have found that it is worth the 7 years wait and everything last of us that I loved during my childhood, the graphics are next gen and can only wait to see the new Ps5 tech looks, the gameplay has had complaint to having little changes, but my answer is why change something that isn’t broke? It runs more action packed, more open world where the fights can come down to your decisions and your skills and really fulfills the title of survival where you will feel like an underdog yet it will give the instinct of what it takes to survive which has been done absolutely beautifully. Now lastly to finish off the story, I don’t want to giveaway spoiler but I believed at first I was destroyed and was considering joining in on the boycotts. But after playing further in, giving backstories, showing the bold new world you begin to feel the developers plans and storyline checking out, the flashbacks Ellie has gives us characters we knew and saw them change, saw our characters grow. What I’m trying to say is that we try and replicate crazy adventures into video games so we can get an experience similar to real life (though obviously Impossible) The last of us is an unbelievable setting and makes it feel real, with real choices, real consequences and real Actions. Characters that can be hated but made them human with human factors such as pain and most of all emotional pain. All the cliche of the action hero and all the cliches of surviving the impossible is rid off, And gives us what I call the closest thing to a real life zombie apocalypse with a factor that connects us emotionally whether you love it or not. This is a spit game for all game fans. The worst part is Druckman can't be trusted with the game's plot. Everything was ruined and it hurt to play. I hope the purchased reviews won't save you. Throughout the game, I wanted to ask why I was doing this. Why make half the game play for this pumped woman.

Mediocre. This game is mediocre at best and I feel like I'm being kind in saying that. I was a huge fan of the first game. The gameplay is mostly the same as the first game. If you liked that gameplay, you'll like it here too. The few additions, the jump button and the dodging mechanic honestly just serve to make the combat and exploration feel a tad wonky, but they're harmless. Everyone's already bashed this story and characters and I hold many similar reservations. And no, I am not homophobic or transphobic. Last of Us 1 had one of the main characters revealed to be a lesbian, and I took no issue with that. Because the first game cared more about story than gender politics and psuedowoke bs. I don't play games to be preached at, I play for entertainment and to escape the crappy reality of real life. This game fails at that so hard that it shouldn't have even exist. That said, I do NOT condone the fans of the first game sending slurs and death threats to the people involved in this game. Druckman is the person responsible for this awful story, and does deserve to be highly crotized, but not threatened. This game is poor. It has some very beautiful graphics, and is fun to play. But the story is just miserable and not very well written. Expand

I think in some areas, this game does fall short. At times, the story is forced into directions that the player wouldn't necessarily want. I can tell how Neil Druckman was trying to subvert the audience's expectations and I commend him for that because him trying to do something different is so much better than him just providing us a cookie-cutter, bland narrative. I can tell how Neil Druckman was trying to subvert the audience's expectations and I commend him for that because him trying to do something different is so much better than him just providing us a cookie-cutter, bland narrative. I felt myself relating to certain characters introduced in Part 2 and I wish instead of continuing to introduce new characters, Naughty Dog would've instead focused on a select few characters that I actually cared about. The structure of the narrative could've been better, but I appreciate what Druckman and his team were trying to convey. After spending about a week after I completed the game to think about the narrative, I've been able to think about how Abby and Ellie are on two sides of the same coin. It is definitely better than people are giving it credit for. Do not believe the intense hate that most online reviewers are giving it.
The gameplay in Part 2 is absolutely fantastic. The animation is seamless, the gunplay feels realistic and weighty, and the fighting is so brutal. Words do not give the game enough credit for the amount of work that went into this game. Just for the gameplay alone, I would recommend it wholeheartedly. To put it briefly, the game looks and feels perfect. The detailed environments are immersive and the character models are equally wonderful.
I definitely recommend this game. It is worth every penny. It is not perfect, but it is human.

Oh, and if your review has anything to do with a "political agenda", or "feminist propaganda", your review is already invalid. Don't bother.

I will get this out of the way and say that the gameplay and graphics are absolutely worthy of a good score, save for the fact that a LOT of the sequences are repetitive at worst. Many mechanics are improved upon and added in this game, making those sequences worthwhile. The photo mode is also fantastic, I recommend that you take as many screenshots as you can with photo mode and just play around with it.

This being said, the story is... not great. It tries to differentiate itself too much from the first game, which had a cliffhanger that basically begged for a continuation. There has been a feeling of disconnection to both the story and characters and nothing to really grasp at you emotionally or mentally as the first game did. Within the first 2 hours of this game, the entire relevancy and connection to its predecessor is completely severed due to a certain event, even if you are greatly involved with the supposed "plot" and what is told to be Ellie's end goal. This game is riddled with what I like to call cheap-outs, that try to get a "gotcha!" moment at you, but are really just surprising for a moment, then irrelevant in the next. There are certain parts that I do appreciate in the story. Ellie's interactions with the characters on her side of the story were something that felt actually good, feeling like the connections you make with other characters in the first game. Although I don't feel as if these characters are necessarily well-developed, I do appreciate that point of view from Ellie. Another aspect I greatly enjoyed, in which case is the best part of the game for me, were Ellie's sequences of flashbacks that told their own story. In my opinion, the story told by those sequences would have made a better plot, one that lovers of The Last of Us would have found more emotional distress and disparity with, in a good way. One that doesn't shatter its connection to the entire first game in a minute, but instead builds on its foundation.

The game also allows you to play the same story from another point of view, in an attempt to garner sympathy for a certain character. I will say that with my time of reflecting on this game, I have grown to like this character and the one that most of her journey is with. Yet even now, I've gained no sympathy for the character. It seemed like they got a small part of the first game (the ending hospital scene) and decided, "Oh hey! Let's make a second game entirely of this pointless death!" Moving on, many of the other characters in the "Wolves" group simply are either just unlikable or gone before you can even get to that point.

I've heard the point from critics that this game is not one you're supposed to enjoy or be happy with. I get it. It's riddled with tragedies. It's supposed to have a "deep meaning". But I say this wholeheartedly: I enjoy tragedies. I like games with tragic stories and endings. Stories that make you angry, upset, and empty. But at the end of this game, I genuinely felt none of those emotions, just disappointment. Plot devices that serve no purpose other than to be a way to move the story on (I'm looking at you, Tommy at my farm and random new group called Rattlers) and major events that don't feel major at all.

All in all, I don't want to say that this game is bad, but it's certainly not good. I say this considering it as a standalone game.
But it is not a standalone game. It is a sequel. So I am going to judge it as so. Considering this, I do not think that The Last of Us Part II is good. Sure, it ups the department of gameplay, but the main driver of The Last of Us is the story. And when you start lacking in the main focus, you have made a disappointing sequel. I wanted so bad to like this game and it hurts to write this, but this was a sequel that was just. Eh. Worth playing? Yes. Would I genuinely recommend it? No. This is my review that no one will read, thanks for your time.

I don’t care about politics in games. Ignoring what people said about it, the gameplay is fun and graphics are one of the best in this generation. The main purpose of this game was to be a linear story driven title but fails at its storytelling with pointless characters and events occurring to give the story a purpose. There is no redemption from the plot.

This is a great game, even though some players are complaining because things didn't go the way we wanted it was the intention of the narrative to show different perspectives of a fact and they succeeded. There are some flaws in the storyline but that's not a big thing for me. Sometimes you feel forced to do something you don't want to do and that suck.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I went into this game with the expectation that Ellie would find out what Joel did. I also expected that someone would kill Joel, though not as early as it happens. So I started off hating Abby and ready to kill her as soon as the game would allow.

But then it makes you play as her and I swear I was so mad at first because I didn't want to like her and her friends. She grew on me a little, especially with how she handled the kids, and I adored Manny and felt so bad for Abby's treatment of Owen. These characters were very well fleshed out.

The came could have ended with Ellie and Dina on the farm, but the actual ending resonated in a way that I think is important for story-telling. Life isn't all happy endings. Ellie was out for vengeance and in the end lost more than she gained. But she also learned to forgive herself and to forgive Joel, something that she wasn't given enough time to do when he was alive. It wasn't what I expected to happen in the end, but I'm glad for it.

Gameplay wise: The bow was a ton of fun to use. I wished for more arrows all the time (especially with Abby's crossbow). I played on Easy so I cannot comment on enemy AI as they totally should have seen me many times and only just sort of saw me before I hit to stealth kill them. Thank god for Ellie's knife because shivs were the worst in the first game. The enemies all having names was a nice touch.

I liked the open world type area of Seattle a lot and I actually wish we had another section like that (maybe in Santa Barbara to get us a little more ingratiated with the Rattlers as that part did feel a little rushed and it was weird introducing a new faction so late in the game).

I think the game did a good job of building up things like the war between the Seraphites and the Wolves and I can understand where some people may have not liked the lack of a payoff, but I think that's what makes it brilliant. Ellie and Abby don't just set aside their differences to team up and take down Issac, who's gone mad with power. They stay selfish and they get out. Abby takes Lev and gets out. Ellie is defeated by Abby and leaves. The two factions are left to deal with themselves. They don't matter to Ellie, who's not even from around Seattle, has no stake in the game, and isn't a super hero. They don't matter to Abby, who's only friends in the group are dead, who feels the need to protect Lev, and who ultimately wants to find the Fireflies again since her one mission in life, get revenge on Joel, has been dealt with already.
Could the two groups have learned to put aside their differences and work together? Who are the Elders who take child wives and clearly twisted the original words of the Prophet to suit themselves? What would happen to the WLF now that Issac is dead?
Having answers to these questions would be nice for an audience, but they don't really effect our main characters anymore. I would love some side novels about these things. That would be cool.

I will definitely be playing a second time and getting the Platinum for the game because it is a game worth experiencing again.

Despite the initial backlash of the game and review bombing, the game is actually holding up. Hopefully reviews will rise soon. The game is very very good, it isn’t for everyone though. The story is quite bittersweet and a little more on the bitter and dark side, but truly shows a raw post apocalypse. It shows many very human moments and deserves to be game of the year and one of the best I’ve every played. Most people who review bombed the game bombed it for selfish, homophobic, or trolling reasons. The game is not bad and I hope to see the score continue to rise. The game is great and I loved it. I do miss Joel, but damn Naughty Dog some how got me to like Abby and her character. Ellie’s path through the game was dark and fantastic. There is so much loss in this game but it feels very real and grounded. The setting was also beautiful and unique, I loved traveling through Seattle and seeing all that the game had to offer. I feel like the third act was a little short and a little unneeded, but I loved the ending fight, and god the ending scene with Ellie and Joel just made me cry. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story aims to tell only one story: Revenge is bad. Even from the starting section of the snowball fight, revenge is the main factor. it's such a lazy concept to base an entire story around, especially with an ending as completely dumb as the one forced onto us for the pricetag of $60. Important characters are introduced and forgotten like nothing, such as Manny, Jesse, and Yara. Gameplay is mirroring that of the first last of us, except tediousness takes a center stage. I don't even have to explain how stupid it is to make everyone play as Abby so late into the game.

It feels rushed, lazy, and boring. All three things I hate in a video game personally. But hey, if you like having beloved characters in a similar game to the first they were introduced in, except with a horrible narrative that I think is fair to say tarnishes the first, then go for it. Waste your money. To me, TLOU doesn't have a sequel.

One of the best games I've played in the last couple of years. Gameplay is solid and the story is unexpected and at times brilliant. Felt like it could have ended a bit sooner, but at the same time it felt appropriate to have the last scene feel like such a struggle.

Great gameplay; graphics blew me away; top notch animation quality, but I love the last of us for the story and this game's story falls severely short. 7/10.

It's Not that bad you guys are just angry, that being said from a story stand point I REALLY didn't like Abby's section, I thought it didn't fit in the world of The Last of Us and it's just a weird addition, but for the resto it's a pretty good game, I'm just NOT a big Tlou fan but great graphics, really interesting gameplay, but the story of the first one is better Expand

I waited eagerly for this game... for years and couldn't have been more let down. After playing this game I have lost all respect for naughty dog. I am baffled that metacritic scores this game so highly vs the user score. SMH Hopefully naughty dog will listen to the purchasers of this game and improve in their story telling ability. The thing that really gets me is that they can write well. They showed us that when the put out the last of us. Why they put this out completely boggles the mind. Why this story pitch was even considered boggles the mind. I would say they need to fire their writer immediately and get someone with talent in that position.

This game is playable, but not recommended.
A cinematic story-driven game that is designed to leave the player feeling absolutely regretful they paid for this experience. It was a chor to complete. Abandons complete everything from the first game.

Not everyone is ready to show empathy and those who could not bond with the villain will have a hard time coming to terms with the game. I think we can all appreciate the story just not the way we are meant to experience it. It pains me to give it a 8 instead of a 10 because in many ways its a solid masterpiece... but in so many ways I disagree with the experience that I also feel generous with that 8. Expand

I forgot about the game the next day, and if I do remember, then only the disgusting agenda of social justice and the inappropriate lgbt gt turbo + agenda in the post-apocalypse world.

These people are just mad because they want a happy ending and have a game like they would like to have, but naughty dog breaks this and presents us a an unforeseeable, brutal and thrilling gaming experience. This is a ride on a rollercoaster.
The graphics are insane, facial expression and AI is top notch. Just one eye candy after another.

I think over time this game will receive it's justified recognition when I remember a game like Metal Gear Solid 2 where people were upset that you aint going to play as Solid Snake. But in the end, it ends up being one of the best if not the best part of the series.

At the end I would like to quote Arthur Morgan von Red Dead Redemption 2 who said "Revenge is a fools game".

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
