This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. An extremely good-looking game with tight controls and a fun gameplay loop that suffers from writers too concerned about specific characters and not enough about others. An example: Jesse, a new character that (contrary to the opinion of many) I actually quite liked and was made out to be a very important part of the story was killed, and nobody gave a damn. The ending was clearly the way it was exclusively to ensure the game could have a sequel if they so wanted to, which is alright, but considering Ellie killed hundreds of people just to get a shot at Abby, had her on the ropes, then decided to let her go? **** writing.

the duality of the story is incredibly capable of leaving you without knowing what to feel, and this is the best feeling that TLOU2 provides, the gameplay is just fantastic, and the story sometimes fails, but in general arrest you, no game is perfect, but TLOU2 come close

The best game on PS4. It's a masterpiece from beginning to end. This and God of War 2018 are the only two 10/10 games this generation. From gameplay to storytelling it is one absolute rollercoaster of emotions. One of the very best that I have ever played in my life! And yes, I played games like TW3 & Half-Life 2 and I still think that this game is the absolute best.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story might seem to revolve around vengeance, as both characters want revenge for each other’s actions. However it actually revolves around finding inner peace and forgiveness. This is a good concept executed poorly, as I could not relate to any of the characters; Abby is a muscular woman that can and WILL break you in bed, Ellie has become an arrogant little ****. I have to admit killing Joule made me sad, however it is understandable because it’s a major plot event. I have to admit I played purely for the gameplay, but even then my gameplay was ruined because I had to stare awkwardly at the screen next to my mom BOTH times when Ellie and Dina was getting pretty handsy AND when Abby got porked from behind...therefore I give it a lowish score...The sex was unwanted and uncalled for. Visually this game is stunning. Everything from the level design to character redevelopment is just fantastic. The story was phenominal in every way possible. It was in my opinion the perfect sequal. I have never felt so overwhelmed and exhausted (in a good way) playing a game before. I was so heartbroken and angry when Joel died. Felt so betrayed and felt myself shaking my head at Ellie choosing revenge over Dina and JJ. I found myself disagreeing with Ellies choices and disliking her, a character I had held so close to my heart, someone I saw so much of myself in. I felt sympathy and love for abby and wishing for neither to die at the hand of the other. The only criticism I have is the open ending. I feel so much more could be explored in this world so much more of Ellies and Abbys journeys have been left untold. Please Naughty dog please make a third installment. Please!!!!

Also can I just express how proud I am of naughty dog for accurately representing the lgbtq community, I felt seen by you and I am sure so many other players will feel the same.

I honestly don't get the hate for this game. I loved every second of it. If you feel entitled to a certain type of story, look elsewhere. But don't gatekeep videogames as a whole just bc you wanted a dumbed down hero-worship plot. No spoilers ahead...

Trans Character(s): I've seen some comments about this game being transphobic. That is absolutely false. Having trans representation does not equal transphobia.

Ellie and Joel: This seems to be the main reason cited for the hate. Alright, people are complex. Way, way more complex than mainstream videogame narratives will have you believe. They aren't just 'good' or 'bad'. Last of Us 2 recognizes this aspect and uses it to tell an overarching story. The game isn't about Ellie or Joel. It's about Ellie and Joel AND the people around them. It introduces a lot of amazing new characters like Dina, Jessie, Abby etc, who all feel like full-fledged, often lovable characters in their own right. Every character's actions feel well-motivated.

Women (Ellie and Abby): Another stupid argument I keep seeing being made is that Ellie and Abby are too much like 'men' and not 'feminine enough'. Sure, I myself feel that we need more emotionally complex women in games that aren't just your typical, patriarchy-friendly 'strong woman' tropes. But the Last of Us is set in uhh.... a zombie apocalypse! Are there going to be strong women in such a world? HECK YEAH. The game has 'less masculine' women too! Dina is an absolutely wonderful character and probably my favorite in the whole game. Her strength is in her emotional maturity, which is something Ellie severely lacks.

Game mechanics: This is a Naughty Dog game, so you know what you're in for. You either ADORE it or like it. The other reviews have talked about this already.

TLDR; Don't go in feeling entitled to a certain kind of story, and you'll be fine. The story is realistic, so are all the characters and their motivations. Flawed characters =/= bad storytelling, quite the opposite.

They tried to make everyone that plays the game start hating Joel that when his death had come into the game nobody would mind, however due to the nature of the antagonist and how swiftly Joel was killed (and brutally) they make it impossible to think of the 2nd playable character Abby as an enjoyable time, instead it is a slog that drags on and on till near the end of the game, where the ending is neither great or interesting, a point to where I was lucky to buy the game at a low price 2nd hand, and yet I still feel like I had wasted my money. A juxtaposing story on two people getting revenge for the killing of a loved one. I loved these characters. Everyone gives a stellar performance. It's honestly a triumphant game which so many people have dismissed because of the death of a major character. The world of the Last of Us is a grim, unrelenting one and the death is brutal and without remorse but that doesn't mean that character becomes any less important. Their presence is felt through the story in the lessons imparted by them.Abby is such a complex and faceted character, and a wonderful foil to Ellie. My only issue with the game is with the level design can sometimes be confusing and can hurt the story pacing when you spend 5-10 minutes looking for where to go. That might bring it to a 9.5 for me but it didn't bother me enough to warrant rounding down to a 9.

I wanted to love this game, I wanted to love it so much that I ignored all of the leaks and the early reviews/opinions. LOU was and still is one of my favourite games and I think one of the greatest games ever made.

Unfortunately that was not the case for the second installment, putting the politics aside it was a far cry from what the first game managed to achieve. Yes the graphics and gameplay is better, that is not in question but instead of using those improvements in gameplay it lacks the deep engaging heartfelt story beats that naughty dog managed to perfect in the first. At no point did I feel connected to any of the characters in fact I dident even recognise the ones I knew so well. I found myself bored at various stages of the game, just playing to get through it, this was not an enjoyable experience in any way. It's not a zero out of ten and it's certainly not a ten, anyone that rates it that highly or low have no credibility whatsoever. The last of us part two is an average game trying to be a masterpiece and it tries too hard and fails equally as hard. There is a political side to this game that strangely has absolutely nothing to do with this game but of society. If you feel you need to bully people into buying a game or liking a game you are a despicable human being much like some of those characters displayed in this game ironically. It's okay not to like an idea or a creation, it's also okay to love it.

In conclusion this game does nothing different, nothing unique apart from highlight the flaws in the personalities of the people who review it, create it and play it.

The game was absolutely beautiful. Meaning behind everything, loved the story. I was mad and sad because Joel died, but I think the story could not have been told the other way... It was an awesome tragic story and you can clearly see moral... I can literally talk about this game for hours... It only had one flaw and I'll mention that later.
Gameplay: Lots of things were improved from it's predecessor. You can mostly decide what to do. You can fight with weapons or be sneaky. Everything is up to you. But there are consequences... The loot is good too. Not too short, not too generous.
Graphics: Astonishing! If I did not know what platform the game was on, I'd probably think it was PS5. Ray Tracing would be so awesome in this game.
Attention to details: The characters are alive, they aren't some stupid NPCs. Water, bullets, destruction... Awesome.
I'm giving this game 9, not 10 because the only thing that I did not like was Joel trusting the unknown crew. He was known to be brutal in the first game and he never trusted anyone. That lack of trust saved him as well. There might be a meaning behind this as well, but Joel should not have become that person who trusts people that easily...

Wow, what a terrible ending. It honestly felt like it went on forever and just wouldn't end?

    Good parts
    1. Graphics are amazing and best on any console.
    2. Voice acting/Cute scenes best in the business
    3. Combat is so much fun
    4. Lots of cool moments that was so intense and brutal.
    5. Executions are super satisfying.
    6. Gunplay is enjoyable for the most part.
    7. New character Jesse was awesome! And he just gets ****ed up way too easily.
    8. Flashback scenes with Joel were amazing. Just made me want him back even more.
    Bad/Ok
    1. Grinding all game long for upgrades was such a hassle, probably why It took me 25hrs to complete.
    2. The story was all over the place.
Why did they kill of Joel so early in the game? And make me want to hate Abby straight away. Then try so hard to make us like her? She was alright but the way it happened was just terrible.
    3. Her crew were scumbags and cheaters and not likeable.
    4. Ellie and Dina were ok, but their story was average?
So much plot holes it was just bad writing.
    5. Joel and his brother being absolute dumbarses with complete strangers? Was so annoying and could have been executed way better.
    6. New enemy types, Barely any really?
    7. Barely any Innovations for a sequel
    8. Game length
First time in a long time. I wanted the game to end, and I still had 5 hrs before I was finished with the game?
    9. Some boring dialogue and dragged out scenes and action set scenes.
    10. The ending was terrible and was such a waste of time and made you go through it twice? Really dragged and dragged.
Abby was ok and I was hellbent to make her pay.
But by the end, they just made me not really care for anybody at the end. Felt like they forced me to like her. By making her OP and give her all the best parts in the game and weapons and gadgets.
So sad when this was supposed to be an amazing franchise that could keep pumping out amazing games. But they stuffed it up. I do not want a new one or care now.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. In a modern world full of stories of good versus evil and happily ever afters, naughty dog took a risk by telling a story where people make bad decisions, their actions have consequences, and most things end tragically. This risk cost them the respect of many fans who couldn't accept the decisions naughty dog made, but for people who kept an open mind and attempted to understand the themes they were trying to convey, the result was a thought provoking and life changing experience. I understand why other people hate this game. If you wanted to have fun, if you wanted a happy ending, if you wanted to watch Joel and Ellie's bond, then this was not the game you wanted.

I find it stupid that people think Neil Druckman is a bad writer because they didn't like the direction he chose to take. He's the same guy that made the first game that everyone loved so much. He could've easily made a game that revolved mostly around the story told in Ellie's flashbacks, then throw some gameplay in between, the voila, you have another story of Ellie and Joel's relationship, drama, and bonding. Joel would still be alive, Abby wouldn't exist, and everyone would've loved it. That's not the game they wanted to tell. This game was not meant to be a fanservice. This was meant to be a dark, depressing experience to display the grief, anger, violence, and horror that comes from hatred and revenge.

The part that is funny to me is that the writers played with our emotions almost too well, to the point where people hate the game. If you felt angry at Joel's death and couldn't accept it, good, that's exactly how Ellie felt. Did you hate Abby's guts and want to see her dead? Well naughty dog came out and said that's how they wanted you to feel. Unfortunately that's where most people stopped caring. If you stopped to pay attention to the story that was being told you would've realized that Abby's character was almost identical to Joel's. Two people who lost loved ones at the beginning of their stories, went down a dark path of violence, but began to regain their humanity thanks to their desire to care for a child. The reason why we hate one and love the other is the perspective we are given. We played a whole game as Joel, but Abby is introduced murdering our favorite character. However if the first game revolved around Abby and her father, with the ending being her father's death, we would've cheered as Abby beat Joel's head in.

The cycle of violence and revenge was passed from Joel to Abby to Ellie, and I was so glad that at the end Ellie decided to break the chain. If Ellie killed Abby it would've continued with Lev seeking revenge against Ellie. I believe Ellie is the true hero of this story, and if she had carried out her vengeance she would've failed to rise above the hate just like Abby and Joel, and she wouldn't have been able to find peace. On the surface the ending does seem like Ellie just gave up and lost everything, but Ellie's story revolves mostly around her learning to forgive, and she took the first step towards being able to do that. During the game Ellie shows how much her own violent actions affect her mental state. Would Ellie ever find happiness if she killed Abby? Possibly, but it would've been that much harder. The game ends badly for Ellie, but because she spared Abby I believe there is still a shred of hope for her.

Overall I think that the creators of this game couldn't have done a better job on telling the story they wanted us to hear. People can love or hate them for that, but I for one think this game is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling, character development, graphics, acting, animation, lighting, and music. I look forward to a third installment to the series.

You alternate between 2 characters, Abby and Ellie for the majority of the game in the first couple hours you come across whatvwas for me the most difficult thing to watch in a video game the death of Joel Miller which was in my opinion unnecessarily brutal. However as yku play the game you come to find out that the brutality of Joel's death wasn't just on him alone this whole world is shown to have brutality in equal measure throughout the game. From killing people with baseball bats to hammers, from setting people on fire to shooting their arm off, I unexpectedly realized just how brutal this game could get in which I realized the way Joel was killed wasn't abnormal for this world. As you play the game and more particularly play as Abby who in my opinion had the funnest sequences in the entire game showed the kind of person she is and her motives for killing Joel. The death of Joel while completely devastating and for some heart breaking was justified and i fully understand just why Abby went out of her way to kill Joel. If you b like games that put you through a emotional roller-coaster similar to the first one then the second one will be for you. I found myself emotionally drained by the end of the game but the story and gameplay as well as the graphics are by far some of the best I've ever seen in a video game. In my opinion this is the best game Naughty Dog has ever created and truly worthy of 10/10 and GOTY. Expand

Throughout the game I was rooting for the characters, empathized with their pain, lusted for their vengeance, and was dragged down into their despair. The emotions that it evokes are horrifying and visceral. I rarely story based games more than once, but I'm pretty sure after a few months time I'll come back for a third dose.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part 2 is a game that I was eagerly counting down the days as The Last of Us is my favorite game of all-time. Unfortunately the game has received some of the most insane pre-release hate that tainted the experience for me. The amount of hate and accidentally being spoiled for a few key moments had me thinking of that instead of focusing on the game.

I understand why the people who hate Abby for her actions, and not due to bigotry, would hate her and hate playing the game. I didn't enjoy playing as her even though I understood what Naughty Dog wanted to accomplish. I didn't particularly care about her story arc, but I did appreciate Naughty Dog tried something that they had to have known would be controversial.

I think that the concept of bringing to light the duality of actions between Joel and Abby was a brave attempt given the amount of love that Joel and Ellie received after the first story. The story wasn't what I wanted, but I understand their decision.

Graphically this is the best game that I've ever played. It looked and ran incredible on my PS4 Pro connected to a Vizio M558-G1, I was constantly in a state of awe at what Naughty Dog accomplished with regards to this. The audio design was equally fantastic. In terms of gameplay, Naughty Dog also exceeded my expectations by increasing the quality of the level design, and made encounters more fun than before. I applaud them for that.

For those who read this who genuinely played this game and felt betrayed, I understand. If you're reviewbombing without ever having played it, find a better use of your time.

I intend to replay TLoU2 next year once all of the nonsense surrounding it has finally settled down. It's a fantastic game even if I don't agree with the story decisions fully.

I really enjoyed the part as only playing as Ellie and the way joel went out is absolutely pathetic .your telling me he went 30 years surviving the apocalypse to die like this by some shemale built like hulk and having him trust them no way would he be dumb enough to trust random ppl he met even though he knew ppl would come to kill him . Playing 10 hours as the shemale Abby is more of a waist of time then learning calculus 10 hours all predictable . Never less how the hell is tommy dumb enough to leave a map on the ground near 2 bodies of where they are staying straight bull . I don't usually write reviews however felt compelled to given the, what seems to me, bizarre amount of negative reviews about this game.

The first game stuck with me for a long time thanks to the actions of the characters in the game being very difficult to reconcile morally. It felt like it didn't try to make the protagonists into heroes, they were simply humans reacting to their experiences, needs, and environment. We were just observing the character's story, we were never supposed to feel like Joel or Ellie, only understand them and, when we wanted to, empathize with them. The sequel expands on this idea unapologetically, there are no heroes and villains, just a selection of humans reacting to their experiences in a complicated world. Last of us part 2 is not the player's story.

The game is consistently uncomfortable to play, there is an overbearing sense of oppression throughout with only the smallest respites and I love it for this. This is a game that truly makes you feel. I found myself needing to take regular breaks every 3 hours or so just to decompress but this is in no way a criticism, it wouldn't have been the same experience otherwise, the tension was everpresent and palpable in a way a game has never made me feel before.

I found the characters in this game to be so well realized that, even in the moments that made me the most uncomfortable or fearful, at no point did any of their actions feel surprising or shocking. Every action felt like the next inevitable step given who and where they were in that moment which often made these moments even more resonant; having to see characters I have loved on the path they were hopelessly trapped on.

After finishing the game and finally letting myself read some reviews I was amazed to see such negativity about the characters. Having watched a few playthroughs from reviewers who did not rate the game highly I suspect a lot of the reactions are from how uncomfortable it can be to be taken on the journey of the story. I've seen a number of reviewers who slated the game for its character decisions but were having a genuine emotional response to character actions throughout their playthroughs, often pleading with the characters before they have even done anything just from the presumption of what is going to happen next. I would argue that if you can feel what character is going to do that consistently then the actions are pretty true to the character even if it's not what you might have hoped for them in 2013 when finishing part 1.

The characters we loved from the first game are made by the world they are in, if we don't allow this world to affect them then the character traits we love are nonsensical. I do think that a lot of these negative opinions may change in a year once people have had time to process the game in their minds, I have already started to see people do this almost as if they were going through the stages of grief which shows how strong an emotional response naughty dog has been able to create with their storytelling.

There is no denying the game is bleak, the hope you experience for the majority of the original is absent however the original was never really about getting the save the world cure and a happy ending; it was about the characters. Last of us 2 is an experience, I don't believe it is trying to feed you a message or teach you about morals or perspective, all it is trying to do is show you the characters' stories, for the stories to be true to the character, the experiences they are having and fundamentally the fact that they are human. In this aim Last of is faultless.

I cannot recommend this game enough, I believe it is a unique achievement in storytelling in a game. The visuals and gameplay are highly polished and do a seamless job of staying out of the way of the story, never distracting from the journey. The last of us part 2 is a tough play for sure, but an incredibly rewarding experience, one that shouldn't be missed and will last in your mind for a long while once the credits have rolled.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The game has nice graphics and good music. Attention to detail and the feeling of world life is presented at a master's level. The weapon expansion system or the opponents AI also did very well. All in all it is an ND game. Unfortunately, the story itself did not appeal to me. Killing Joel - a veteran by Abby without knowing her motives, then forcing the player to play her makes the game frustrating. But maybe that was the director's endeavor. The ending of the game is equally annoying. Ellie decides to let go of Abby, who also killed Tommy-brother Joel, at the very end of Ellie concludes that revenge is bad? She couldn't imagine it when she brutally murdered Abby's friends [e.g. Nora]. For me, as a person attached to the first part, the story is disappointing. Gameplay is very similar to the first part, not too many new solutions introduced. Most zombie opponents are the same, probably a new type or two has been added. While facial expressions and the expansion of live opponents is admirable. After killing a dog, its owner calls him by name! Overall, this is a good game, although not revolutionary like the first part. As a continuation of Ellie's adventures, the game falls out worse.
It took me about 28 hours to complete the game.

Ellie's parts of the story are just okay, and the characters are really weak (other than ellie, Joel, and Tommy). Dina might be one of the most annoying characters I have ever had tag along with me. She does nothing but constantly tell me what I'm doing is dangerous, and asked if I'm okay what felt like 500 times throughout. Abby's part, on the other hand, is a whole lot of fun with some really good characters. Some of the set pieces and action sequences are loads of fun to play through, which was oddly missing from Ellie's parts. The only problem with Abby is that her story is entirely unnecessary, no matter how fun it is. It seems like it would have been better off as a DLC or a standalone DLC like Naughty Dog has done in the past. I'm just guessing, but it almost feels like they knew the Ellie portions of the story were not up to par with what they wanted, so they just tacked on this part just to hopefully improve the fun factor. It worked, but it still is very unnecessary. The Ellie portions dealt with a lot of swimming, I'm assuming due to the fact that she just learned how to swim, but really you can either swim or not swim in video games. There's no in between. It's hard to make learning to swim into a compelling story mechanic, which I'm assuming is why she can perfectly swim during the part where she's "learning" to swim. Abby's parts deal with the fear of heights more, which is absolutely doable in a video game. Some of the things she has to deal with because of her fear of heights, really translates over to a more fear inducing experience. I know giving this an 8 after all of this criticism doesn't make sense, but I feel like this is still a high quality game that just doesn't have as good of a story as the first. people rating this below a 6 are just doing it out of spite. Thematically, the game challenged me as a user to see each dilemma through each character. Why do Joel, Ellie, Abby, Dina, Jesse, Tommy, Yara, Lev, do what they do? Ultimately survival is key, but like I mentioned before: does everyone have to die? And what does one have to lose before they understand that some things need to be forgiven?

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
