The narrative is gripping, some really powerful moments, and a game I couldn’t put down even though it was really hard to play because it’s so gruesome.

I wish I could make it a 9.5, it’s not perfect, but it’s really really superb. Play it with an open mind and you’ll be rewarded.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. More of the same as the original minus some awkward control issues which is ideal. Can be a bit repetitive at times but the story is sound. It deftly goes into the grey area between good and evil and the adage "an eye for an eye..." flows throughout. The fact they managed to put me on team Abby is quite a feat since Ellie is a fan favourite. Some have been critical of the choice to kill off Joel, however it follows perfectly from the original story. What he did was not something a good man should walk away from and it plays well into how Ellie then goes on a bloody rampage since he plays as her father figure. The ending was convoluted but effective. The addition of another random group of bad guys was an odd one and tbh I'd have enjoyed more gameplay in california. The themes of there being no safe havens in the apocalypse weren't very well developed but I guess that wasn't the overall thesis. I've heard comments about an lgbtq agenda which is absurd. If having characters who happen to be trans or lesbian is an issue to some I hope they have a nice cellar to live in so they'll spare us from their bigotry. Game was worth the wait. Good stuff. The visuals are amazing as expected. Combat is great, though I wish they balance out fighting infected and fighting humans, I thought humans were being fought too much. Having an opinion is everyone's right, but it's such a shame that so many would review bomb a game they haven't finished, or in many cases even played, just because they didn't like the path the story took. I didn't like what happened in the game either. I was intensely attached to the characters at the end of part 1, and to see the way part 2 ended left me hollow, sad, and empty. But for me, the beauty in this game lies in its ability to make you feel, intensely, what's going on in the moment. The gameplay is absolutely stunning. I've never played a game that's had my heart pounding to the extent that this one did. The graphics, mind-blowing. I struggle to see why we even need another console generation so soon (not that I'm complaining), when my launch PS4 is able to give me such a stunning immersive experience. And the storyline, well, it's tough. The only joy you find are in the little moments, like the flashback to Ellie's birthday. But that's what TLOU is about. The world is bleak, joyless, and the game makes you come to terms with that far better than even the masterpiece that was part 1 did. Furthermore, never before has a game made the player come to terms with their own actions like TLOU2. Two instances in particular spring to mind. First, where you slaughter a vicious dog, and later are made to play catch with the same dog and see what a sweetheart she is (RIP Alice). Second, where Ellie gets information from a seemingly meaningless character, who in the second portion of the game we see as a jovial character who had simply been protecting herself. Without giving much away, I have never been made to feel so profoundly by any video game, or any form of media for that sake. There are times when the game gets uncomfortable to keep playing, but that's what makes this franchise what it is.
Also, just as a P.S. (Spoiler Alert), the moment where Ellie tells Joel she will try forgive him for lying about the fireflies made me so emotional I almost had to stop altogether.

The attention to detail is great, with the enemies you defeat calling out each others names adding extra realism. The knockback you experience when you get shot makes every shot feel more impactful and keeps you from wildly rushing enemies. The two separate but intersecting storylines made for an interesting storytelling device, but could have been executed better. I found myself rushing through the second storyline because I wanted to know how the cliffhanger I was left with concluded. Would have worked much better if the gameplay alternated evenly between the two characters, as opposed to all at once one at a time. Still a positive, challenging experience overall. Expand

Hell I even found myself kind of liking Abby by the time of Seattle day 2 of her section of the game despite what she did to Joel in the beginning - May he rest in piece :(

I truly understand and enjoyed the take Neil Druckman took on this story as making us play as the villain and understand her in the second half. Though I still hate what she did to Joel. I understand. It was a powerful move that made me angry and depressed - which is what it's supposed to do. AKA - Not **** writing as many people claim.

Overall I really enjoyed the game, it was playing with my emotions throughout my entire play through & was keeping immersed within the universe the entire time - I thoroughly enjoyed myself

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The Last of Us Part II is a game that's hard to hate but difficult to love.

The Last of Us Part II is a phenomenal game, there is no doubt about, but yet it still manages to be somewhat disappointing. Mechanically speaking, the game has no faults. As much as the director would claim to the contrary, the game is exactly what it sets out not to be: fun. In fact it's probably one of the most "fun" games I've played in a long time. Uncharted 4 was a game made fun via the ability to just throw up a hook and swing around, jumping and taking down enemies from above and running-and-gunning your way to the next goal. The Last of Us Part II is made fun via dodging enemy attacks, crawling under an abandoned truck and enjoying the sweet thrill of a well-placed silenced bullet in the head of an unsuspecting enemy.

The majority of my disillusion occurs within some minor technicalities with the games structure and narrative decisions. During the first day in Seattle, Ellie and Dina come across 2-3 large open areas. The first area, if you're working at trying to explore everything, can take as long as 2 hours. The next area is more about combat but features 6 or 7 large groups of around 6 enemies each within close proximity in a downtown area, which again, can take many hours to get through if you're attempting to go about it stealthy. The issue is that in being tasked to find gas, after a few hours you almost completely forget why you even needed gas in the first place. And the issue is that areas like these never really show up again. The areas certainly never reach this scope again but really I think these areas are the games weakest and never needed to be more open in the first place.

This leads into the game's biggest issue: Abby. Naughty Dog is perhaps notorious for designing massive set pieces and building a story around them. In this game though, it appears that situation has reversed and surely that should be a good thing, but I don't think it works here. The game suffers from lack of excitement and any set pieces that do feature tend to be given to Abby. It would appear that a game marketed as Ellie's game fails to give her an interesting story in comparison to Abby and a lot of it is forgettable. Ellie gets some amazing flashbacks with Joel that are the highlights of the game, but Abby has an amazing present in the game. Ellie is more likeable but Abby has more story.

When the 2016 reveal trailer was released, I was 17 finishing my final year at school and I spent almost every day in the library with Shawn James' "Through the Valley" on repeat. When Troy Baker said that the game would be divisive, I thought that it would be Joel's death that would make it so. I was wrong. It was simply the execution of the second half of the game. Playing the enemy is a concept that could work, and one that is certainly a great idea, but its not so well executed. There are moments where we feel for Abby, we laugh with her and understand her hardships but ultimately when it comes to it, no matter how humanised Abby is or demonised Ellie is, we are hot wired to side with Ellie no matter what. It is difficult at times to understand character motivations Despite what other reviews say about the supporting characters and how bland they are, they are honestly amazing characters that carry the game more than the two ladies at its helm, especially Dina.

Perhaps the game would have worked better if it wasn't sliced in half, if the main conflict took place inside the 3 days it focuses on instead of the final conflict being a year later turning Ellie into a Clementine copycat complete with missing fingers, mom haircut and child. It would have been more fun for Ellie to visit the burning Seraphite island or fight "The Rat King", but again these are given to Abby. When we get to that final showdown, despite all the time we spent with Abby, the journey there with Ellie warrants the satisfaction of Abby's death. Instead of killing her when she had the chance, our hero decides she wants some epic showdown for some reason to fuel her ego in which really she lost in the end (goodbye fingers), only to allow Abby to sail away into the sunset.
Is the story awful? No. Is it unsatisfying? Mostly. Is it realistic? I'm unsure. Is it worth experiencing anyway? Absolutely.
This may have come across as a negative review but I don't intend it to be really, as a videogame it is a phenomenal game that actually is FUN. I really wanted to love it but I couldn't help but be disheartened by the second half. And the second half could have been justified by a better ending. Why did I give it a 9/10? Because it's not awful. It deserves the praise its got. How videogames are reviewed is typically a 7 is 'average'. I do believe it's above average in design, gameplay and accessibility so, 9. The ending is what knocks it down and that Ellie literally just became Clementine 2.0. Also maybe more cutscenes.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Beautiful visuals, great audio, impressive voice acting... just absolutely stunning. Fighting was as good if not better than the first game, although it felt like the listening ability was a lot less reliable this time around. It also became a running joke for us that every single door would be locked and every single ledge/floor would collapse, it become tedious after a while. The beginning of Abby’s stretch of the game was infuriatingly boring; I didn’t care about her or her friends or the WLF organization at all. It only picked up after the Scars and the children were introduced because we were finally getting new information and interesting characters. I must admit that this second section clearly did what it set out to do: by the end of Abby’s gameplay, I didn’t want her to die anymore—which is saying something since I REALLY wanted to kill her for the entire first half of the game. Yara and Lev really saved her as a character because she suddenly reminded me of Joel. Let’s just say that by the final fight, I was extremely emotional. I honestly wouldn’t change the ending at all. Also, cheers for exploring how queer people would exist in this new world; each person is clearly a character who is queer instead of “The Queer Character^tm” that some creators use for brownie points. Overall, an amazing game that made me very depressed and then gave me just enough hope to keep going. Expand

Nothing wrong with it, and people providing negative attitudes towards the game with only the argument of “transgenders” & “lesbians” obviously can’t appreciate marvellous writing and game design and are not open to such a unique and perfectly built world. Most people who have complained about the game have really only said one thing “Naughty Dog is trying to force an agenda and ideology down our throat, all while attempting to make white men appear weak.” Those people are the type to think that there is a political stage to everything And must add their own views to all discussions. But if you look at the game AS A GAME, then it’s clear that the devs tried their hardest to provide the more appreciative side of the audience with an emotional masterpiece that leaves you in love with almost all the characters. The only Two problems i had with the game were, no1, Joel dying in such a shameful way (which i know had to happen in order to have a plot at all) and, no2, how extensively they tried to justify the ,bad guys’ decisions... i feel as though a simple extended cutscene would of been perfect, but alas, the devs can’t appeal to everyone and i get that Amazing game, included all the aspects of the first yet also taking a new approach, true nostalgia trip, 10/10. Naughty Dog did not go that here, which is surprising for a company that usually does amazing things with their games. Within the first two hours of the game, a major character acts against his or her established characteristics, trusting strangers when after a full game had shown that he it she never trusts new people. This is an incredibly lazy way to deal with a major plot development. The story overall is a run of the mill revenge plot and poses little in the way of actual character development. New relationships lack anything of substance, reminding me heavily of Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman in the prequel Star Wars films. Graphically, this game is astounding, and as the PS4's lifecycle ends, will easily be the best looking game on the platform. The gameplay is a more refined version of the first, with fewer environmental puzzles, but amazing physics on the rope. I wasn't the biggest fan of the first game's combat, but the characters kept me invested. This is not the case here. Instantly, I despise the villain and the game devs for what happens. I expected this event to happen, but the way it feels is less like Obi-Wan and much more like Han Solo. So, having despised the villain, I expected to relish in the revenge, but I didn't. I didn't want to kill random people that are close to the villain, I want to kill the villain. There is a section of 10 hours in the game where you are forced to play as said villain, in a shallow attempt to make you empathize, but it does nothing. I had to put the game down and I won't be picking it back up. I have seen the end, and I'm glad I didn't waste anymore of my time. Thankfully, I borrowed a friend's disk, as he didn't even want to continue after that initial event. Overall, there was no enjoyment in this game. After all, Graphics does not a game make. Expand

Naughty dog have not only created one of the finest gaming experiences of this console generation, but one of the most incredible stories ever told across any form of media. This is a truly bleak game, sprinkled with just enough humour and beauty so as to never become a chore. At no point in my playthrough have I ever been anything but absolutely enthralled. With each 'day' spent traversing the breathtaking imagining of post apocolyptic Seattle, gameplay builds through sequences of open world exploration; hunting for supplies to upgrade your ever growing arsenal of guns, ammo & tactical weaponry (the weapon upgrade animations are fantastic) before a genuinely best in class stealth experience takes over. Enemy AI is smart, coordinated and designed to constantly keep you moving and thinking. The game does an excellent job of keeping the pressure on. As with all story driven games I play on normal difficulty, and the challenge is worthy of plenty of deaths but never enough to break you're spirit. I did find that when restarting at a checkpoint, the game would reposition an enemy who was causing particular trouble which was helpful. All of this swells to cruscendo's of truly brutal and white knuckle action. Some of the things you are asked to do as a player will stay with you for a long time, and the truly staggering violence almost never comes off as tacky. (Although admittedly, one encounter in particular whilst on the hunt for a boat was a bit much...)

The infected don't present as much of a challenge, but the use of lighting and sound design create an atmosphere that is genuinely terrifying. The main challenge that is presented with infected enemies is not how to kill them, but which ones to kill fist. As with the previous game, music is used to outstanding effect and is entwined within the story beautifully to bookend sequences. Ellie music shop acoustic rendition of a classic song a real emotional highlight to rival 'the giraffe moment' from the first game.

Technically the game runs buttery smooth on my launch ps4, and although the issue of turbo fan kicks in I have experienced no performance issues whatsoever.

You must experience this game, its as simple as that. The low user score is a sad reflection of todays society, and should be ignored by any rational consumer. Yet the review bombs act as almost the perfect metaphor for the last of us 2's overarching themes. People will go to extraordinary lengths to destroy their enemy, yet despite all of our percieved differences - everybody bleeds the same colour.

I will admit that some of the games moments became tiresome due to the structure of the story. I believe that the game's core story is nearly on par with the first in the series. However, as I said, due to the less confident, less conventional plot structure, the character building and motivation falls a bit flat until the very end. This is where I think the game truly shines, with the whole story in mind. The new characters are not made to be liked, but compared to the ones we knew before. A pair that will do anything to protect each other and survive. I do hope to see them return in the Last of Us: Part III, if that's ever possible, as Joel and Ellie's story has come to a depressing, bitter sweet end. Expand

Almost everyone agrees that technical part of this game is top notch, story though is different story as it maybe is the most divisive and controversial among fandom across all favourite franchise. Everyone has their opinions, lets respect that.
I personally like this game, it’s one of the most unique story-telling experiences i had in my life. I understand why certain people hate this game, and it’s the same reason why i love it.
I hate Abby for joel’s death , i want to avenge his death so badly that i killed all WLF soldier in the most brutal ways. But then in the second half of the game, We got to control Abby, this murderer that killed our beloved characters. I dislike this part of the game at first, but when i experience what she felt and her lifes, i understand that no one is villain in this game. There’s no hero or bad guy in this game, everyone has it’s own motivation, people they cared about.
Abby, is just another human being, like us.
The ending is good also, Ellie didnt get to avenge Abby. She know Joel will never want Ellie to become the person he was after Sarah death, he wants Ellie to live happily with her lover, do things that she love to do, she deserves a better life than becoming killing machine. Even if Ellie did kill Abby, some people will eventually try to find her out and avenge her, potentially putting Dina and JJ , or even tommy in danger. She knows Joel wouldnt want that, so she let Abby go.
Story itself is good, but the way story is told can be better in my opinion.
If there’s a part3 , lets just hope Ellie is treated well, that kid suffers too much…..

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall The Last Of Us Part II is very good game. I am disappointed with how ND killed off Joel, I don’t believe he or Tommy would have gone to a location with a bunch of unknown people... But that is what it is... with the years passing by Joel could have become easily trusting and quite honestly careless.....

ND did a very good job overall with the firearms use-age and manipulations. However, currently the revolver is messed up.. when the trigger should be in double action it’s to the rear as if it’s a dead trigger or in single action... (imo with the wheelgun Ellie never should cock the hammer back on the revolver unless she’s making a 25 yard or so shot) Its unrealistic for her to always be cocking the hammer back if aiming down sights in a close quarters situation. Another complaint is weapon options.. In my opinion there should be more options as far as firearms in the game (handguns -1911 or browning Hi-power) or with rifles the Ruger Mini 14. It’s ridiculous that these weapons are in the game and you don’t have access to use them.

The gamplay is every bit as good as the first game while adding even more to love. Mobility has been greatly improved to make the game feel more fluid and really helps to define the differences between being in control of Joel and being in control of Ellie. There are also new skills to upgrade, weapons to find, and new craftables to aid in your journey. The story of the game is also spectacular. It feels like a clean continuation and a natural second half to the game that was so beloved by fans 7 years ago and brings all the emotions you'd expect with it. The world is just as alive as before and the characters make the world feel more full and give you even more to love. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Very strange to see this game get review bombed so vehemently. There’s a clear lack of objectivity by tens of thousands of people leaving a review here, and clearly a fair few of those haven’t even touched the game.

Spectacular graphics, refined gameplay and an emotionally driven story that makes this yet another fantastic addition to Naughty Dogs now growing list of classics.

The two issues I have story-wise do relate to some of the decisions made. For me, what makes The Last of Us different from usual survival horror/apocalypse type games is that relationship between Joel and Ellie. The Last of Us IS that relationship more than the world itself and is at the very core of what makes the first game special. If you remove one of those elements then you risk falling back in to just another game, albeit a high level one.

The second issue is the trope of revenge. While naturally you would expect the people closest to Joel to want redemption, the game prides itself on being grounded and it would be hard to accept that in real life, in such a horrendous world, you would leave the sanctity of Jackson to travel hundreds of miles in to an absolute fortress to try and find one person. It’s not a dealbreaker but it does take away from that grounded atmosphere it tries to create.

That being said, I’m more than happy to be an observer of Druckmann’s story, given that he is the creator, much like I would he reading any novel. I admire the fact that they didn’t rest on their laurels and pay loads of fan service to the game, purely to please the (seemingly aggressive) dedicated fan base to this franchise. I want to play a linear story game to be told a story, not to cross off a checklist of things I wanted to see in the game. Generation defining game, not quite at the level of the first game, but the expectations for this sequel were so high that was always going to be a challenge.

It’s a shame that there is an ever present immature streak among a lot of gamers that can’t be objective enough to form an opinion on this game without jumping on a bandwagon.

It was such an emotional game, like the first, but it was also brutal and intense. I found myself loving some of the new characters introduced and was drawn in to their stories along with Ellie's. Every scene with Joel is a treasure and I can't say enough praise for Troy Baker's portrayal of him in this game. Same with Ashley Johnson as Ellie. And oh my gosh Laura Bailey as Abby. Props to her for owning that role.

The beginning is hard. But I didn't stop playing and I'm glad I kept going! A lot of people are angry with game and immediately want to trash it without giving it a chance. Personally having played the game 2 times first time on moderate just for experiencing the game and digesting the game normally and the second time for **** and giggles and feel like a badass with the accessibility options turned on, and this is what I have to say. First the Gameplay, it was phenomenal with brutally and ruthlessness not seen since this side of Manhunt, now the graphics my man... my man... This game... This game is beautiful to hell and back, That's all I have to say. Now onto the reason why this is a 4, The story. Now to say this is story is OK would be kinda generous not to dive into it as I'm sure someone else can say it better than me, so the issues really revolve around the characters and the ending with Characters acting weirdly and a little too convenient for the plot such as my main men Joel and Tommy being a little too generous with people they just met, Being forced to play as the killer, strangely graphic sex scenes from a company that censors anime **** trying to make me feel sympathy for the killer and having it fall flat on its face, killing a main character for shock value. The ending not having you go through with getting revenge on the main man's Joel's killer.

The Last Of Us Part II.

Expand

Expand

The Last of Us Part 2 is a very special game, a game that doesn't come around very often, and thats why I think you should play this game yourself and form your own opinion on it. This game is second to none when it comes to Music ,Visuals, and Gameplay. The performances by Ashley Johnson, Troy Baker, and Laura Bailey are simply some of the best if not the best performances ive seen in gaming. The story is easily the most controversial part about this game and for good reason, it takes some very ballsy turns very quickly, but in my opinion pretty much everything that happens makes sense for the context of the world that the characters live in. Its a game that takes some new approaches that video games haven't really done before and I really do appreciate that. this was one of the first games In a while to make me feel like I just played something Powerful when the credits roll. Whether you enjoy it or not is really up to you I think this is a piece of work that everyone should experience for themselves. Expand

I started playing it just when the barrage of bad reviews starts coming out. With some disappointment I started to play, but I was very surprised. The game is beautiful, full of details, with a great soundtrack and maximum emotion as in the first part. The story is consistent in its development and the narration with flashbacks is great. A worthy sequel.

I've been a die-hard TLOU fan since the day the first game launched in 2013. I have waited for 7 years and Naughty Dog did not disappoint.

Amazing game. Story is elaborate, going to places I never thought possible with surprises around every corner. Gameplay is top-notch, extremely realistic and immersive (especially on Survivor difficulty). My advice is to play it for yourself,

I will never forgive Neil Druckmann for ruining what was supposed to be the highlight of my year. This has been 28 hours of my life I will NEVER get back. I missed seeing the NASA launch for this game. I missed picking up my FATHER from the AIRPORT who has been OVERSEAS for 15 YEARS. I missed the birth of my twin sons so thanks a lot Neil Druckmann for NOTHING Expand

The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
