How can Naughty Dog get away with such dishonest marketing, using Joel in the trailers like he's playable. And then making you play the killer is just cruel. Played and finished the first one like seven times which means I, like any other true fan built a bond, a relationship with Joel and Ellie. So, when the second game brutally destroyed Joel in front of Ellie, I accepted it in the beginning because it does build a strong story/plot. Where i changed my mind and did not agree on however, is when we had to play as Abby. The lady who killed Joel like he was thrash and especially in the end when Ellie let Abby go without killing her after the look that Joel gave Ellie right before Abby smashed his head in. How can a true fan just let that go. I honestly dont give a rats behind on what happened to Abbys dad nor do i care about any of her friends who had a part to do with Joels death, if it was up to me, kill them all. "You are pregnant?: BAM! You have a family? BAM! Awh you love each other, BAM! What i am saying is, i would have cared more about Abby and the group if all they did was beat Joel to a coma but he still lived, then the ending would have been wayyy more understanding and acceptable. Killing Joel was a huge dissapointment especially since we have to play Abby in the second act, all i know is i will never ever play this game again. Naughty dog basically ruined it for me. Now if they ever make another game, I will wait for the review rather than pre order it. I can never trust the company again to make a fair solid story. #justiceforJoelmiller #Joelslifematter… Expand

    The Last of Us (2013) is still my favourite game. Love it from beggining to the end.
    But the Part II sucked. HOW CAN YOU MAKE SUCH BAD STORY? YOU HAVE TO PLAY AT LEAST 10 HOURS AS ABBY AND ITS SO ****ING BORING. THEN YOU FIGHT WITH HER AS ELLIE, AND LET HER ESCAPE. LIKE A COWARD. To start off the fans would have been so much happier if Joel had died another way, in TLOU2 he dies after saving abby who then goes on to golf club his head in, people would've been happier if he died around mid game giving ellie and dina time to run from WLF, and the whole revenge story could have been that they killed a group of innocent families including children in the crossfire in an attempt to kill joel but it goes wrong and they scrambled for Seattle, letting u play as JOEL and ELLIE chasing them down not letting u play as abby once. Case closed Apart from this. Game graphics are pleasing story is still **** but just an idea of what wouldve made it good.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. To start off with the positive first. The graphics of this game is visually stunning and completely shows the full power of the Playstation 4. Gameplay is seamless and friendly. Melee combat is made easier with the dodge button although it is easily abused and takes the fun and tension during close encounters. Voice acting and motion capture is also great. It helps make the characters believable and real.

    Now with the negative. The story is an absolute letdown compared to the first game. Killing off one of the main protagonists that players loved and doing it in a very disrespectful way. Players then take off in a mission for revenge and halfway throughout the story, the game forces you to take on the perspective of the killer just so it can desperately try to make you symphatize with her reasons and justify her actions.
    Naughty Dog also seems to have a misguided belief that a long game would mean a great game. This is entirely false as the game is so exhaustingly dragged on to no end, making simple fetch quests into a long tiring gameplay where you constantly venture into buildings or bridges again and again and again. Making the trip to finish the game an absolute chore.

    In the end, TLOU2 is a failed attempt to introduce a strong female character in a very generic revenge plot that feels like a completely different game slapped with a familiar title just so it would sell copies. It is a sad excuse of a sequel with no satisfying closure and should've spent more time in the drawing board.    … Expand

    Ok, so I took some time thinking about this. Played it, listened to views and what others had to say and I can't help but think there was so much wasted potential with this game. The usual things are true; the graphics are fantastic, the voice acting is great, and the environments are breath-taking. Unfortunately, then we get to the story and the characters. The Last of Us Part 2 isn't asOk, so I took some time thinking about this. Played it, listened to views and what others had to say and I can't help but think there was so much wasted potential with this game. The usual things are true; the graphics are fantastic, the voice acting is great, and the environments are breath-taking. Unfortunately, then we get to the story and the characters. The Last of Us Part 2 isn't as much of a game as it is a walking simulator with a few shooting sections and exposition based cutscenes. The levels exist as collectathons in between cutscenes which provide the entire plot. Whilst I appreciate the time and effort placed into trying to create a new story with serious consequences it falls flat at nearly every hurdle. We all know of the certain events which happened within the first few hours of the game with a certain character called Abby. We are then forced to play well over half the game as Abby learning about her backstory in the hope we feel sorry for them and it somehow makes us likes them. Sorry Naughty Dog but we hate Abby. You positioned her in such a way that you doomed her character from the state to be hated by all players. Would have been much more impactful to have the whole game happen and then Abby take out Joel, that way we would have already formed a bond with the new character making the end result more shocking. Furthermore, the ending is weak, almost a cop-out. Like ND couldn't find a good way to finish it so they didn't. After killing her way across the US and having remorse for no-one and seeing her friends and family killed along the way Ellie decides to let Abby live. Whilst some may see this as character development, it just makes the last 20-30 hours of gameplay worthless. Would be the equivalent of John Wick letting the man who killed his dog go after murdering literally everyone. There was so much potential for this game, so many avenues they could have taken, but this felt lacklustre and just didn't live up to it's own hype. Not to mention the part of the game you do get to play become incredibly tedious and monotonous very quickly. Run, walk, loot, walk, run, shoot, stab, walk, loot, run, all followed by nearly 10 hours of cutscenes. I feel as though if they were to keep the same story arc, It would have been beneficial to get to know and play with Abby before she did the unspeakable and then we were forced to play as her. Or the game would have been better if it had followed a different set of protagonists all together leaving Joel and Ellie alone. As a cinematic experience its amazing, as a game it is ok, as a sequel and a conclusion to one of the most anticipated stories in video game history. It's not good. It get a 4 just because the story is weak, characters are unlikeable and unrecognisable in some instances and the ending feels like they didn't know what to do so they did nothing. Hopefully will serve as a lesson to these AAA developers that if you mess with the characters people love, it won't end well and people won't like it. The main positive i'll give this game is that it is not afraid to kill off major characters in throw away scenes, but it does mean we just don't care about any of them.… Expand

The Last of us 2 in my eyes is actually The Last of us 3 in my opinion because the actual sequel fans wanted started off with the Joel segment at the beginning of the game and the game we actually wanted took place in that 4 year time gap between the first game and the 2nd game. We always expected Joel to die at some point in the series but we expected it in the 3rd game or at least 10 hours into the sequel but instead he dies an hour into the game and because of that fans are pissed and to be honest I think Naughty Dog should go back and take their time and really put effort into writing the game that takes place in those 4 years and release that and call it The Last of us 2 then they should change this game to The Last of us 3 and update the ending to have two choices if you Decide to kill Abby and get your revenge you get the sad ending where Ellie is alone but if you let Abby go then Ellie gets the Happy ending and gets to be with Dina and in this game that takes place within that 4 years they could actually explore Abby's character and show that she actually cares about people and the only thing she's angry over and wants revenge for is because Joel killed her father it would also introduce the characters on Abby's side more dynamically so it doesn't feel like these characters popped up out of nowhere and also fans would get the sequel they wanted even though they might not like the way The Last of us 2 went and this would fix a lot of that at least I think it would.… Expand

The game has incredible looks, the playability is awesome (even though some bugs), but i have too say that the story is most disappointing thing of the game. the story goes in a try-hard way, it pretends to be realistic but fails being to predictable and convenient. The trailer is a lie for the users because it showed that Joel would had a more interesting use in the plot. everyone though that Joel would join Ellie in the story, and probably would be killed in an advanced part of the story, but sadly you just looked for an easy, illogical and convenient situation to kill him in the beginning of the game. The game also fails introducing a lot of forgettable characters, that don't even have a good character development through the story. this make the game and story feel boring.
    The end feels incredibly weird, it is confusing and not corresponding the plot of hate and revenge, there is no development of the character to tell there is a mind change, but Ellie in the whole game just tried to kill and take revenge, but not thinking about mercy.    … Expand

    They killed the franchise, still i can't believe what they've done.
    I've almost cryed for the frustation on the bad ending, on the disrespect for the characters, ruinning the best story of the past decade.
    Trating Joel like he was a little innocent kid, and killing him in one of the worst deaths ever on any videogame. the story is fuc*ing s**** and isn't TLOU.
    Forzing the player to empatize with Abby and then forcing to kill Ellie, this is not right, and is unnacceptable
    The gameplay was very good anyway, the new mechanics added fine to the game. we got more exploration zones, some kinda very easy puzzles, and big scenaries. However was a little bit repetitive fighting against humans, or undeads, again and again

    Conclusion: Don't waste 60 euros on this, please...

    I refuse to regard this game as a sequel as it does nothing but self destruct the amazing story that the first game had ended with. Game play felt like very forced onto the player. Players were deceived with the trailers, the whole point of trailer is to show the audience what they are paying for but here I just feel cheated. There are games that have used this tactic before, there are games that turns antagonists into protagonists and vice versa but those games had a very compelling story-line. Like in MGS series and FF, you have very strong and powerful characters, you see your favorite characters change from good to evil, from evil to good etc. But I never felt like forced to play those games, here I felt like turning off my console so many times. If naughty dogs really tried to be Kojima here, they should have at least reviewed his work as well. I would just pretend this game didn't happen and I wont be pre-ordering any games from these developers in future without seeing public reviews… Expand

    I finally finished the game and I just want to make it clear how disappointed I am. This game has so much potential but falls on its face more than anything I have ever seen. Sound design is amazing, and finally, the controls and mechanics really do feel flawless. However, in a story-based game, all of those things don't matter if your story is a complete dumpster fire which this story is. Characters lack any sort of development. I literally don't care when anything happens to anyone, but Ellie. Every single one of them could die and it would not change how I felt about the game or them at all. The only time I feel any sort of emotion is in flashbacks because that's the only time I see any sort of character development at all. Otherwise, this game left me bored out of my mind. I found myself working through areas faster and faster just to get to the next cutscene in the hopes it would get somewhat better spoiler alert it does not. Most of the character development and good thought out story bits you're going to see are within the trading cards you can find throughout the map as collectibles and honestly, I'd rather read and collect all those than ever play this story again. The second issue I have with the game is with the ending I won't spoil it for anyone, but those of us that played the game understand how bad it truly is and I don't think that we would be having this discussion if it was at least a choice. However, it is not you are forced into the decision it makes, which I can guarantee is not the decision 95% of the player base would have made. The ending straight up feels like a slap in the face as you have worked the entire game for one goal and it makes all that work and effort useless. That's why I gave this game a 3/10, everything about the game is great except for the story which is a major issue in a story-based single player experience. To the team at Naughty Dog who worked on this game brushing up the mechanics, creating the environments, and working on the sound design you did an amazing job. To the team at Naughty Dog who wrote the story, I hope you never touch another project in your life. Just to reiterate this story is so poorly written that imagine if in Uncharted 4 instead of its ending Nathan gives up on his quest halfway through and goes home. That is basically how I felt after this story, honestly, I'd ask for a refund but at this point, I don't even care. I don't want to spend any more time thinking about this game, playing it, or writing about it; this is it. Finally, I am incredibly disgusted by the way Neil has handled the backlash. I'm aware this game has been review bombed but for those of us who actually played the game, his reaction to our criticisms seems like another blow to the gut. On Twitter, he's made jokes about the reviews and that's just a shame he can't admit to his own shortcomings and mistakes, but I really do expect nothing less from him as he's clearly shown he does not care about fans from the story he's written. That is why this game is a 3/10. I'd recommend never touching it, don't let it taint your opinion on the series like it did mine. Just know Ellie and Joel are out there surviving just like the end of The Last of Us and let it end there.     I've been looking forward to this game since the day it was announced and have literally been counting down the days- I got hit with spoilers which is a huge bummer but I still kept my head high and had faith in Naughty Dog to pull off a masterpiece like they did with the first game. Sadly, and in my personal opinion, they didn't pull through.

    The game-play mechanics and graphics are absolutely incredible and it is obvious that they took every small detail into account, but where it fell short was the story and this is why.
    You play half of the game as Joel's killer which I thought was a complete bore, I didn't really enjoy playing as Abby whatsoever despite ND's attempts at making the player like her and paint our beloved main characters from the first game as enemies. I never expected myself to be rolling my eyes and yawning during the game I held a preorder with for just under three whole years.

    Certain characters were also unrecognisable and had all the qualities which made them so loved in the first game thrown away completely.

    The ending was unexpected, but anticlimactic. Ellie has killed hundreds and hundreds of people without hesitation, but when it comes to killing the person who shot Joel's leg off and murdered him with a golf club, shot Jesse in the face and killed him instantly, and shot Tommy in the face with the intent of killing him but missed his brain- she decided to let her go.

    If I was rating the game off of game-play and graphics alone it'd be a 9.
    If I was rating it off the story alone it'd be a 3, which is thoroughly disappointing from a company which I had so much faith in.    … Expand

As much as you may disagree with a story's main beats, if the connective tissue is well crafted and cohesive and the motivations and actions of the characters feel genuine, then it will still resonate. Nearly every major story beat in TLOU2 comes by way of uncharacteristic stupidity and incompetence from the cast of generally unlikable, charmless characters; or by way of outlandish coincidence. One particularly galling recurring contrivance is Ellie's plot armour. The antagonists of the game have multiple chances to off her, but instead let her live for no conceivable reason, instead tying her to a table or some other cliche while they wait to be killed. Ellie herself has matured from a quirky, endearing, sightly rebellious teen into the personification of wallpaper paste. In fact, most of the characters are as bland as a bread sandwich. Frankly, the game as a whole is devoid of any fun or personality, with the exception of a few scenes featuring what made the first game work so well: the relationship between Ellie and Joel. These are few and far between, however. Separating herself from the bland cast of characters is the despicable Abby. Abby makes for a pretty good villain. You hate her. She's a mean, disgusting psychopath (her breathing like a pig in heat was particular repulsive during a certain scene). The problem with this is that she is also the second playable character. ?????? Moving on. The game's technical achievements and solid gameplay loop save it from being a complete failure. The game is undoubtedly the pinnacle of what a game can look like on the current hardware. The facial animations in the first game blew me away and the exact same is true in the sequel. The gameplay in the first game split people into 2 camps. Either you found it a terse game of cat and mouse which could explode into a frantic and brutal melee after a single slip up (like me), or you thought it was something you had to get through to reach the next cut scene. Well, it's essentially the same here but with a bit more going on. Not a lot more to be honest, but I think enough to feel somewhat distinct. Basically, if you liked playing the first one, you'll probably like playing this one. One gripe I did have was the unnecessary jump mechanic. You jump like an anvil in treacle, missing the mark often. When you do eventually make a jump, you will often cling onto icy metal or perform some other improbable feat of superhuman upper body strength. A fairly minor quibble but one I felt like mentioning. There's plenty more to the story and the writing I could complain about but I feel like this review has gone on far too long already.

    To sum up, the game is a jarring, unpleasant experience that I would not recommend. If you're thinking of picking it up, watch the first couple of hours first and then make an informed decision. I hope I've articulated why the game is in fact bad, for anyone who thinks that it's just being review bombed by sexist alt-right scum or whatever. It's a sad day for Naughty dog fans.    … Expand

So here is what I think: Pros: - gameplay - graphics - atmosphere - sound - music All those parts are undeniable very good. Its top notch. Sure the controls sometimes feel weird but they do in most of the games. It would be unfair to say this game isnt up to date in terms of all those points I mentioned. Cons: - story - character design - character development - plot holes So, even with all the pros this game is really really bad. It makes NO sense that Ellie act how she acts in certain parts of the game but that isnt even the biggest thing about why its bad. The reason is: character development. If you kill one of the most beloved characters early in the game (Joel) and want to bring in new main playable characters like Abby, you HAVE to bring WAY more backstory in order to make the player feel with her. I mean she KILLED Joel! How do you make the player like her? Bring more and more backstory before she does that. Let the players play 2-10h as Abby when she was a child or whatever. The backstory of her is basically told in 10minutes and then her dad is being killed. Thats it? And now I have to feel with her and understand why she killed Joel? Hell no! That is weak story telling. Really really weak. Then there are all the other new characters. Nobody is likeable. Like really. They all feel empty. They are only shells without any meaning. This game is just bad. Do yourself a favor and dont buy it. The reviews the journalists wrote are either bought by Sony or ND or are heavily politicly influenced. Sad thing is: because of that same journalists will most likely make this game GOTY. What a joke. Safe your money and buy something else. And last but not least: this is technically a very good game but the story/characters is/are SO bad it just doesnt matter how well the rest is done. You want a good revenge story? Watch "Oldboy" then you know how to make a good revenge story that shocks everybody to their core. This game right here? Its garbage… Expand

Jumbled up timeline (reducing the score by 4 for this as it was a colossal screw up). I dont care about the people who were killed, give me the backstory before not after they die; I would care more and be less annoyed by the writing. The puzzles, just trash them pls. The combat, try something new after 7 years pls. The jump button is one of the worst implemented I have seen for a while.

    Stories without hope or arc, with characters bereft of rationality and motivation, with cheap and cliche scenes, that upset the viewer and leave them appalled, are simply badly written.

    The hubris of Neil Druckmann, with far too much unrestrained creative control, who was more interested in shocking, upsetting and dividing customers with bait and switch and fanfiction-grade nonsense than creating a game that everyone would love. I have never seen such a ridiculous story. I've waited for this game for years. a complete disappointment. Why should I love the person who killed my favorite character? okay! I empathized. you want this. Abby is right, but i never won't love Abby. Why are you pushing this? and

I actually bought this game with my hard saving money and it was my first pre-purchase actually and I should have watched the spoilers before buying it... This game is so bad dude... Graphics looks fine, music is meh (the first one was 100% better) and characters worse than meh actually... Well now let's get to the **** story. It's an absolute **** 1/10. Its the worst dude... First Joel died and I cried my eyes out cause he was my favourite character from TLOU series and now he gets beaten by a woman that looks like a man and doesn't have **** and then later in the game she has sex and we see her flat boobs was beaten by a **** GOLF STICK!?!? Nah man this ****s wrong dude... Halfway through the game, you kill her friends as Ellie and then that **** Abby finds her and kills Jesse? **** that. Then you had to play as that **** longer than Ellie! (It took me much longer playing as that **** than Ellie). And I will not even talk about the ending. This game made me hate Naughty dog, the company I love and enjoy, make me hate Ellie (Cause of the ending) and let's not forget who wrote this bull****! Neil Druckmann... Oh yeah, I forgot you had to beat up **** out of Ellie as Abby. Ok, I'm done... I will never buy a game that is written by Neil Druckmann.… Expand

    Just finished the game. They spend all money on very ugly models, Druckmann paycheck and PR. And completely forgot about the story and gameplay. I'm a huge fan of TLOU1, and this one is a pure crap. Druckmann become mad I think cause of "celebrity" status. Worst ND game. End of story.

    Let me be as clear as possible, this may be the worst sequel to a video game iv ever played. The characters, terrible. The story, even worse. The only good quality this game poses is its graphics, I play on the oldest model of PS4 and it looks awesome. Other than that, bad game.

    The first game got me through some tuff times in my life and to come and play this game..honestly made me sick,this is a game that should have been canceled, atleast skate 4 has been announced so we no longer have to think about this terrible plot hole filled game.
    Naughtydog has lost a supporter and many more will follow.

    The Last of Us Part II is the high point of the PlayStation 4. The plot is controversial, but the game is the incredibly addictive adventure of Ellie, from which it is impossible to pull away from the opening and to the very end.

    Not everyone is going to enjoy the motives of The Last of Us Part II. But if you try and manage to accept the subliminal and not so subtle messages as a fact that the world has gone awry and that people have the need to have somewhere or someone to belong to as their own way out, then... You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.
