    Why did they take him away from me and then try to force me to like/empathize with his killer? I played the last of us, not the "fireflies are us". I obviously empathized more with Ellie and Joel, why would you have me be okay with attacking them etc etc? could have been perfect but they ruined the ending, just ruined it. it's gameplay and first half deserve a point though, just for thatWhy did they take him away from me and then try to force me to like/empathize with his killer?     I am so annoyed. I just finished the game. Are you kidding me? I don't care about your gender politics! I don't care if pixelated characters are gay/straight/queer/whatever. This was the stupidest f+++ing writing I have ever encountered in a video game (and I played Valhalla on the Commander 64). Get over it Naughty Dog. We just want to play a game. And kill Abby.

    No sirve de nada un juego con excelentes gráficas si la historia es forzada, rara, con argumentos poco creíbles y sin lógica. Parece ser que se empeñaron en quedar bien con ciertos grupos inclusivos en vez de hacer un juego de calidad, excelentes gráficas pero nada más.

    I wouldn't recommend this to anyone wanting to play this game because you liked the first one. Game is straight up garbage. Graphics and gameplay are nice but they are not worth it for 20h game with terrible story that will make you hate yourself for ever playing it

    GAMEPLAY
    compared to many action games, the controls and gameplay is the definition of average. nothing interesting, you do not really look forward for fighting anyone or to just enjoy contorls. there is nothing challenging about it.

    STORY:
    it had potential to be something, but the writers seem to believe "graphic violence = deep and real" which is simply not true with TLOU2. Also changing the previous protagonist's personality and how he behaves just to be able to kill him off for political agenda, then giving us a girl with mental issues and 0 personality development made me happy to have played it at a friend's instead of paying    … Expand

    only good thing about this game is the damn graphics.. the story is the worst i have ever seen. its not even about all the sexualities' of the characters.. the plot is boring and has the worst ending. gameplay is copy pasted from the first... and they make you play a new character who should be the villain trying to make you sympathize with him even though he killed your family.... just wow

    Horrible choices by the director. Horrible characters, story, camera play, map is like a maze. Game forces you to play 50% of the entire time with a character that you have and feel disgusted by. Just play Last of Us 1 and forget about 2, not worth the time and money spent.

I’m fine with the so-called traumatic incident that happened, so my distaste isn’t due to that—it’s just that the pacing sucks and it’s all about running around scared and with the occasional stealth kills of the first game. I do like the silencer mods, but wish they lasted a few more shots. Anyway: pass on this and just buy an action or stealth game, as this one fails at both.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The original game was one of the best games I ever played, the story was great and the two main characters, Joel and Ellie, were the main reason I liked the game so much. Just completed the Part II, totally disappointed!

    The story was bad, and the characters you loved in the original were ruined or destroyed. The worst part was that you were forced to play Abby who brutally murdered Joel so that you may like her and won't feel bad when Ellie let her live in their final fight.

    In the original game, that damned doctor was trying to kill Ellie to make a so-called vaccine, but when the fireflies woman asked him "will you do it if she is your daughter?", he simply could not answer the question, apparently he can sacrifice other innocent people but not his daughter. So what is wrong with Joel when he killed the doctor to save Ellie who he cared about so much by the end of their journey after losing his own daughter at the beginning of the story? The game creator created a revenge theme in the sequel, it's a shame on you trying to un-justify Ellie's revenge while trying to justify the other.

    This game also tried hard to tarnish the relationship between Joel and Ellie built and developed in the original game. Why did Ellie hate Joel so much in this game? Was it because Joel saved her and prevented her from being made a vaccine to save the humanity? Give me a break, that's so ridiculous! The game even let Ellie lost two fingers, so she could no longer play the guitar Joel gave to her and left it behind at the end of the game, what a joke!    … Expand

    It's like killing off Mario and having us play as Luigi.

    An absolute disaster of a video game which everyone had high hopes for. Graphics are 10/10 but the game is so poor that the wonder of the world just means nothing.

    There is A LOT to talk about in this game. It's a TOTAL MESS. It takes the story from the first game, and completely turns it upside down. And remember, it's not called tlou 2, but part 2, which implies it's a continuation of the events that happened in the first game. I played tlou 1 when i was a little kid in 2014, in 2017 i played left behind, and in 2020 i played tlou 2 in the month of june. And i decided to replay the entire saga in the month of november, finishing it in around 18 days. Tlou 1 needs no introduction. Just fantastic. And left behind gave a lot of useful information on Ellie's backstory. Things change with part 2.
    THE STORY:
    When i first played as Abby, i wondered who was she, and thought "Oh, a new character, let's see what happens with her". And it all collapses when she kills Joel. And the way Naughty Dog decides to do it, it's just SO BAD. Needless to say I instantly hated her. Now Ellie's part in Seattle isn't the problem, because I **** LOVED IT. And then, the game just starts going down and down and down when Abby reaches Ellie in the theater, and we get to play as Abby, FOR LIKE 8 TO 10 HOURS. The problem is, Abby's part of the game, it's literally a flashback of the events that led her to meet Ellie. Both Ellie's and Abby's flashbacks are just useless, they don't say anything. Because yeah, in Abby's part, there are SEVERAL flashbacks, which they're all inside ANOTHER flashback, and it gets so confusing. I found Abby's story EXTREMELY boring (Except the rat king and haven battle), when i was playing it i just repeated in my head "Please, let it be over, i can't take it anymore". And WHEN we finally reach the theater from Abby's perspective, we get to play as ABBY, FIGHTING ELLIE. I died a lot in that part, and when i did, it felt SO satisfying. But then, Abby almost kills Ellie and Dina (after having already killed Jesse and shot Tommy), but then she spares them because of Lev, and never wants to see her again. Then we see Ellie Dina and her baby living happily together, but right after, we see Tommy who Carl Grimes style survives a bullet to the head, saying he found where Abby is. The game could have ended there, with Ellie saying she's done and gives up on revenge. The game would've still been pretty disappointing, but it gets EVEN WORSE. Ellie leaves Dina and her baby, with 30 minutes of combat before fighting Abby. But the fight, IT WAS SO **** It's a super bad fist and knife fight, and it was **** if you think about uncharted 4 boss fight, which was perfect. When Ellie almost drowns Abby, she gives up and lets her go. In the fight she loses two fingers, and can't play Joel's guitar anymore. And that's it. It ends here. And i was SO PISSED when the roll credits came.
    GAMEPLAY:
    Now, the combat mechanics were AMAZING. They were INCREDIBLY REAL, the levels of gore was INSANE, and the kills felt so satisfying. Combat was my favourite part of the game because in my opinion it was AWESOME. The gameplay was pretty much like tlou 1, with many enviromental puzzles, grabbing resources and crafting weapons, and many encounters in the path. Bugs are super rare, even though i encountered a few. But it's still very enjoyable. Not perfect, but i give it a 9/10.
    GRAPHICS AND AUDIO:
    No comment. The graphics are THE MOST REALISTIC I ever saw. The level of detail is amazing. Same as sound design, and the soundtrack it's magnificent. Gustavo Santaolalla it's just one of the best videogame composers. 10/10.
    CHARACTERS:
    Just. No. Horrible. Abby's horrible. Yara and Lev don't add much to the story. Neither Dina does. Joel and Tommy they don't count since they're still awesome, but they don't appear much. And Ellie actually passed to the part of the antagonist, since in the final fight Abby didn't even want to fight, but Ellie forced her by threatening Lev. She kinda acted like an **** sometimes towards others. Totally different from 14 year old Ellie in tlou 1.
    SUMMARY:
    The game's been a huge disappointment. Within an arc of 7 years between part 1 and 2, Naughty Dog false-advertised the game, by putting lots of sequences with an old Joel in the trailers, and adding even scenes that aren't even in the game. You actually spend more time killing humans than infected. And humans lived in **** enourmos buildings with electricity and lots of other resources that you wouldn't find in a zombie apocalypse. It didn't even feel like a zombie game. But like a non-stop human killing simulator. It's just pure **** compared to tlou 1, other zombie games, and other Naughty Dog games. Totally different story that didn't spot a single thing with the first game's one. Joel gets killed by the daughter of A **** NPC, and she also gets to be one of the protagonist. It's like saying Solid Snake gets killed by the son of the one soldier he strangled in Shadow Moses. It's a total mess. Naughty Dog it's capable of a lot more than this.

I fell in love with the added ammo and crafted items. I absolutely hated what they did to the story. The direction they took with the story could have been acceptable if they went about another way. Joel's death would have been fine if it would have been later in the game, not the first 10 minutes. The real stab in the back is being forced the play the character that killed him. Splitting the game into two separate people that you need to essentially build from scrap is not cool. I hate that they made an attempt to get you emotionally involved with her. It's sickening. The cherry on top is not being able to kill her in the end. You suck Naughty Dog, thank you for taking my money and wasting my time on this pile of stinking garbage.… Expand

From my perspective it nearly never matters how a game looks as long as the story got you convinced. There are lots of tiny independent games out there in the App Store that look awful, but know how to tell a story.

    This game in comparison is a    I play video games for more than 35 years. I have seen all the evolution from the ugly 8-bit area to the new shiny and realistic 3D artwork. From my perspective it nearly never matters how a game looks as long as the story got you convinced. There are lots of tiny independent games out there in the App Store that look awful, but know how to tell a story.

    This game in comparison is a well polished great looking movie spectacle - with a hollow story and empty characters. The revenge plot from both protagonists is a thing we have seen way to often and as the player have no possibility to change the course of the game it’s just a virtual movie where you are allowed to push some buttons while your actions will have no influence on the outcome of the game. It’s a boring one-dimensional game where you learn nothing about yourself, play characters who in case of Ellie act totally strange compared to part 1 or in case of Abby don’t get you hooked up with.

    The side plots the game is offering didn’t get enough time to develop and in the end didn’t matter at all. Who cares if one group used some people as slaves or that another group tortured their enemies in some prison cells - if you have no chance to make a difference or at least interact in different ways with these presented incidents it doesn’t matter at all? Why not give us different decisions, different outcomes or at least different ways to the ending? Why not give us - the player - more time to get accustomed to the different side characters? Can someone name the friends of Abby you will all kill as Ellie? Can someone honestly say he cared about one character in this game besides Ellie and (of course) Joel?

    And if you try to make a game that is tough, bleak and cruel like you think the real world could turn out in case of a pandemic - why are you so careful when it come to racism or sexism, making the whole thing you try to sell us as a possible apocalypse scenario totally unrealistic. In my opinion that’s the main reason while players like myself who could see past the killing of Joel and try to give this game a chance couldn’t get bought into it - the game tries to be realistic in his surroundings and violence while on the other hand is afraid to make any mistake with today’s social and ethical beliefs - especially regarding minority rights. These are two totally different sides who won’t fit into one scenario - you either make a realistic game until the bitter end or you sugarcoat it right from the start. But as the broken world is so realistic and polished in this game, these discrepancies are more obvious if the game wasn’t so perfect in its visuals.

    The game left me sorrowful at the end - because of the potential it had with part one from 2014 and the strange decisions the developers did for this second part. If there wouldn’t be a first part and this game would have stand as a single game, maybe most gamers wouldn’t be so harsh. This was a missed opportunity to make something special and it was wasted for two identical revenge plots where two girls in a broken world where only driven by the motivation to avenge someone. And for 20 hours of gameplay - that’s not enough to be interesting till the end.    … Expand

    If you loved the first game, DO NOT buy this one. The creates of game try to push the narrative that Joel deserved his brutal death because he killed the Fireflies who were preventing to save his Ellie. Conveniently ignoring that Ellie was going to be murdered by the wonderful Zebra loving doctor without her knowledge and prior consent. I did not like the death of Joel and I am not a fan of then having to play the majority of the game as Joel's murderer. Thanks for ruining my favourite game, I regret deeply buying this game and that my money will ultimately end up as game revenue for Naughty Dog!    … Expand

    TBH i dont think this game is a 1 out of 10. more like a 5 or a 6. But i want this review to reflect the very poor writing and plotholes present throughout the game. Characters act completely opposite to who they are and have developed into throughout the first game.     The story is really bad. The gameplay is nothing special. a new main character that just does not make any sense, with the addition of political/social agenda BS. When will these people learn that we play games to escape real life. STOP Putting real life political BS into gaming.

As a standalone game, it's just barely average. But the story as a sequel makes absolutely no sense. Characters are regressed to the point of just wtf moments. It's clear that the writers just wanted it to be a Walking Dead clone with how they portrayed everyone. They completely disregard the fact that there are terrifying echolocating cordyceps zombies running amok. They are kind of just a side-note, even though it's what made the first game so scary. They make you love Joel in the first game, noting how distrusting he is, and then completely change his personality and make him look like a little b**** for the sake of crappy storytelling. And you can't even get revenge at the end of the game. Just an absolute failure. Wish I could get that wasted time back.… Expand

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. first game is a masterpiece. this game is bad. the gameplay is only slightly changed but after this much time that amount of improvement feels like a step back. the biggest let down was all the lies. neil told us when the sequel was announced they wouldn't return unless the story was good and he said how important these 2 characters were to him and the team. both characters were ruined and unrecognizable to the characters we loved by the end of this game. ellie had family friends and a home, now she has nothing and is alone. and joel well joel is dead in the most bs way they could write full of a million coincidences to make it all fit together. neil also made sure to lie and tell fans with trailers joel will make it deep in the game and that he's a main character still just to find out it was faked. neils hubris was on full display as he thought he could lie to all the fans and still make the story good enough that we wouldnt hate it. you failed fans and the characters neil. his new fav character abby is maybe the most dislikable person ever written in anything. she does and says more disturbing things than joel but she does it for revenge and hatred unlike joel who did it for love and survival and yet were supposed to accept her by the end even though she's worse than joel and killed him after a long drawn out torture we have to watch. sound design is a mixed bag. glass breaking and other objects sound great but most guns and the atmosphere noise is sub par and often just silent like nothing in the world makes a noise without ellie. don't make me kill dogs with no choice then try and make me feel bad. no one wants to kill dogs. you can tell they wrote the end first and that they couldn't come up with a good story to get you there. the the end game is so disconnected from the gameplay leading up to it its insane. abby gets ellies forgiveness and remorse after ellie just killed 100s of enemies she didn't even know, but abby who she hates for a reason can live, abby who has given her ptsd is now forgiven. joel is a murky character but he's clearly the good out of many evils in the world. abby is not murky she's just a bad person who only cares for herself and she works for the evils in the world willingly. lev/yara is the only likeable part of her story but its entirely them, abby stinks. hope the show retcons abby so joel and tommy just watch her get eaten instead and go home and have great lives. this game not improving on the sales of the first show how much a mess this game is. 10 million plus people loved the first and yet you managed to deliver a product that even in an improved gaming market with more ps4 than ever they could not even expand sales a little. tlou part 3 is going to flop hard when ever they inevitably force the next turd out as part of the shows story needing to continue rather than an actual idea for good story telling.… Expand

    The game on a mechanical level is excellent, very detailed and realistic. It is a pity that the story is so bad, incongruous and with thousands of scripts, in addition to a lousy and unsatisfactory ending. Bruce Strailey should have directed this second part.

Joel, just like Luke, gets completely s**t on just to "subvert expectations", a slap in the face of all fans of TLOU part 1. Most of the new characters are uninteresting and by halfway through the gameplay gets really repetitive. Which leaves us with the story, a pointless revenge story without the big payoff. I don't know what they were thinking when they wrote this, but they clearly missed the mark, at least with fans of the original. A low score is given for ruining and killing off one of the most beloved and interesting characters without even giving him a proper ending or purpose. What a shame naughty dog, went from top studio to irrelevant all thanks to Neil druckman AKA the new Rian Johnson.… Expand

    Good looking game but that is all that it has going for it. What a train wreck of a story this game is. It totally spits on the greatness that was the first game. Terrible writing all around. I have a high tolerance for bad writing but this game just takes the cake. It comes of as overwhelmingly pretentious and character motives seemingly change on a dime. Nothing makes sense.

The first game was great because of the relationship between Joel and Ellie that the player got to experience. It is strange that the developers did not understand that this was the reason for it's success. In the second game there is nothing of that kind. You basically play unlikeable characters (Abby) and also have to endure several very questionable and explicit depictions of gay scenes (you cannot imagine, hard to watch). The first game didn't throw this topic at you constantly and not to that extent, therefore it never bothered me.
    I basically just wanted to play a zombie game with a great story (like the first) - I bought my playstation 4 for the TLOU1 game and waited a long time for the second without checking the spoilers. Good luck to Naughty Dog with selling the next game to that niche market. Apperantly they forgot who their customers are and what they want.
    There are many more problems with this game. You can read them all in many other reviews. The IP is definetly dead after this. Maybe even the developer. Another franchise ruined :(

    Graphics are strange, in some areas of the game are good, in other areas looks creepy, is a disaster.

Sorry but if you in your right mind give this glorified MOVIE a 10/10 you need your head checked. Lets not even get into how bad the story is compared to the first (the first few hours is literally spent watching a dating rom com) or how the game completely and pointlessly **** on a beloved character or the lackluster ending. No lets forget all that for a minute. It's just NOT a fun game to play, at all. It's a glorified interactive movie. Listen Druckmann, get you a deal with Netflix, and make a full fledged tv show/film it's clearly what you really want to do. It seems like the more advanced consoles are becoming, the less games are being games. If this is what PS5 has to offer, all the games just being walking simulators, then my hype has died down a bit. Find a new formula Sony. Every game being a movie is getting tiresome and old. I don't even feel I need to even talk about the plot, it's not even worthy of mentioning. I will just go on pretending this game never happened, erasing from my memory and only considering the original canon.     That being said I never liked The Last of Us for the graphics and gameplay. I liked it for the story. From start to finish you can see thaylt no love or fan service went into this game and sadly they failed in trying to copy some of Rockstar's writing with a main character death. Unfortunately theg went way too far and screwed up the whole game because of their conservativeness of the modern world... The story was very forced in some parts, I was disappointing, but in a very bad situation, Tommy and Joel trusted a person without even asking what she was doing there and arguing about, once Joel was or suspected, that doesn't change in a callous person like him, and Tommy in good faith, just like the beginning of one when Joel didn't want to stop giving a ride to a family when the outbreak broke out. Abby's own revenge, after 5 years, is a little forced and finds its target as it was, given on a platter, once again forced. An interesting point, despite the strength, playing with Abby should cause aversion, Joel's postmortem gameplay, as much as fighting Ellie. Ellie's moments of remembrance with Joel are very touching, the highest point in history, the only point that is not forced, emotional! Another forced part was done by Tommy, demanding Ellie's participation, Tommy always seems to be calmer than Joel, trying to do less or worse, time to stay on fire because he believes in the ideals of the group, then in Jackson, starting a family and using City . In the end, less, Ellie didn't kill Abby, I was already rooting for either, I was already totally lost and Ellie paid a very high price and didn't see how it could be different. Be surprised that Ellie has known the whole truth since the beginning of the story, the group's motivation was already predictable, and to hope that Ellie's revenge would be balanced with the truth told by Abby and Tommy by denying or confirming everything. The story of the first one was the best because it was fluid, without forcing it, you could understand or Joel when he resisted bonding with Ellie and then killing the workspaces to save Ellie. Naughty Dog was audacious with the story, because it is not an infiltration of Abby in Jacksson, as the group was planning and ending a revenge in the first meeting between Abby and Ellie, it was interesting the attempt to provoke aversion when using Abby, but if one the intention was to create sympathy, try to make the player understand Abby's side, I don't think I did, a person who keeps security for 5 years and leaves a recent murder of his friends alive, doesn't make any sense to me.… Expand

You will witness the boundaries of gaming expand. You will witness a true masterpiece.

    If you loved the original for its great characters and well-paced story – stay away from this game. However, if you’re aching to sink into the depths of depression, or just want to cut some throats and burn some zombies – Part II will deliver. [Issue#247, p.72]
