Just finished and I gotta say; It was really good fun ride. Best in its puzzle-platformer genre, honestly. Despite its hardware limitations, sluggish commands and camera work, and often funny rag-doll physics, this game really drives the story home. The game looks as good as it did in its E3 showings, so while the graphics aren't top of the line they never lied to you about it, which I appreciate a lot.
A complaint I'd levy is that there is extremely little real exploration, and what little there is is almost never rewarding. That, along side the almost auto-play of the game when riding your pet thing, makes the game feel too closed. Re-playing the game through those long bits sounds like a chore because... I mean what would I really miss?
Overall, got what I expected. The story and world were the selling points and it REALLY hit home on those points.

The Last Guardian will have no problem resonating with people long after finishing it with a fitting and impactful ending, a testament to Mr. Ueda's trilogy. I would say if you are only into FPS or sports games, you may not appreciate what The Last Guardian has to offer, but who knows, maybe this experience can broaden your perspective. Few games have emotionally charged me, The Last Guardian stacks near the top of the list. Few games get a second playthrough with my precious time nowadays, Trico calls to me to experience him again, and I cant wait.
Also a special shout out to Composer Takeshi Furukawa for an amazing music score orchestrated perfectly to this game.

I felt myself becoming attached to Triko and the story sucks you in. The puzzles are challenging and require a lot of patience, but it is always rewarded with a beautiful vista or a gut wrenching cutscene. My only complaints would be the camera, which can be a bit unruly in tight spaces, and the framerate which dips into the 20s in certain locations (especially ones with water). I hope this can be resolved with optimization patches in the future, but I do not think it takes away from the experience, as the framerate and camera issues fade away and become forgotten after a few minutes. On the other side, the high quality is not constant. It isn't easy to guide Trico and the controls appear dated. Sometimes the camera is to close or Trico just doesn't do what you try to tell him. If you are patient and have enough time this isn't really a big problem. Another point is that the environment looks very beautiful in the bright fog, this creates depth and the visual style, but the evening lighting without fog in the last part of the game doesn't look convincing. The frame-rate is not constant and the textures of the interiors are to monotonous.

The Last Guardian is the latest game from Fumito Ueda, of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus fame. It is definitely echoing ICO (I loved that game!) in its basic structure. The player controls a young boy and along with the giant beast named Trico they have to escape from a castle and a mysterious force that keeps them trapped. The story background is vague but its centre plot is really touching.

The game is based on environmental puzzles and a bit of platforming in some huge areas. Therefore you have to treat Trico as a giant moving platform/ladder that you can freely move around and scale. You will be amazed when you and Trico jump over big chasms, it's a new sense of gaming scale. You can also give some commands to Trico, but it is programmed to behave as a real animal instead of the always obedient horse in Shadow of the Colossus, and this can lead to some frustrations. There are times when Trico will act on his own, jump to some place only to come back at the same spot. Thankfully this isn't anything gamebreaking, but still it's an issue that appears from time to time.

The biggest problem for me is poor frame rate on standard PS4 and heavy controls, along with a laggy and cumbersome camera. I am not fanatic about fps numbers, I can forgive the constant 20-25 fps, but the controls are a bit floaty. Since the same issues were present on both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, it must be a Fumito Ueda trademark. At least PS4 Pro owners can run the game at 1080p and locked 30fps, for a more enjoyable experience than the 4K mode.

The Last Guardian is a clear 10/10 score in terms of concept, art, architecture and the whole Trico animation, but the aforementioned issues bring it down to an 8/10 score. Still these are not able to seriously detract from one of the best and most moving experiences in videogames. The game suffered from its nearly 10-year-long development and numerous delays, but it has finally delivered Fumito Ueda's vision for his kind of games. Let's hope Ueda-san comes back with another adventure.

Voice acting 10/10 - I'm really curious as to how you direct voice actors to emote so well with a made up language.

Controls 5/10 - I have to be honest as much as I loved this game the controls were incredibly frustrating. If I wasn't so invested in the game for all of it's other qualities I wouldn't have persevered with such horrible input control.

Additional Note: I've noticed some people complain that the game doesn't take long to complete. I question whether or not these people used a walkthrough guide to complete the game. If you didn't take the time to figure out the game's puzzles on your own, you probably shouldn't be commenting on the game's 'length' at all.

Yeah, it stutters a bit, but mostly when Trico jumps, which is basically like a cutscene. The camera is fine during platforming and combat. The graphics are nice. These are not PS2 and PS3 graphics people. Look at how huge the landscape is. Look at the fancy particle effects. Look at how lifelike Trico is. Those things take resources.
The gameplay is a lot like Ico, and a bit like Shadow of the Colossus. If you haven't played those, you should try to if you can. The gameplay is also a lot like the Tomb Raider games from the 2000s, minus the guns. It is like God of War minus the hack and slash combat. It is like a 3D version of Limbo or Inside.
I absolutely hate shooting games, but I gave The Last of Us a try because I like good stories and characters. If you feel the same way about puzzle/platformers, maybe you should give it a try.
If I didn't already own a PS4 I would have bought one just to play this game and I would not be disappointed. Trico is absolutely amazing. If he doesn't do what you want after a few levels/areas, you probably aren't giving him the right commands. Or maybe you need to feed him more.

Trico is an incredible combination of interactivity and subtle body language, like no character in gaming has been before. Trico will help the player through puzzles as much as the player will help him, whether it be through his vocalisations, his positioning, or his head movements. The Last Guardian is a masterclass in level design, with a scale rarely seen in games. In combination with high-stakes platforming, it makes for a nail biting experience. The weaknesses that TLG has are the camera (which doesn't need to be moved as much, and can be improved by raising the sensitivity to 100%) and that there is a great deal of depth to the interactions with Trico that may be missed by players. Unfortunately, even basic interactions seem to have been lost on a lot of players, which could be alleviated with the addition of a unsubtle tutorial. TLG is a once in a generation experience, with one of the most memorable endings in gaming history. Problem is, what Ueda has done is simply too innovative and detailed that it can't use any less resources. A design decision was made here that gives you a strikingly lively creature that made all the emotion possible.

"Lively" is actually an understatement. I've never played a game where every part of a character reacts to the environment/ random elements so perfectly, nor I've played a game where a main character moves so smoothly between EVERY SINGLE animation, while having an epic amount of them. There isn't any dominant Idle positions, and the loop point of the animation transitions are so often unrecognizable.

Mechanic-wise the solutions to the puzzles are just subtle enough which is great, and it is masterful in not giving you the expected (aka boring) outcome for a lot of events.

Does this game control poorly? No it really doesn't. Spamming the controls like a moron will cause Trico to essentially lock up. You have to be patient. Everyone getting this game should have known what they were getting into. It's basically all the player's fault if they expected Trico to follow their commands immediately. Everything in the promotional material makes it clear that this creature was programmed to not do that.

People are lighting into it due to the 10 year wait, and i'm like "Is that really a valid argument?"
I'd say no. No it is not. Actually, **** those who use that as an argument. Its not like this is a kick starter game that took 10 years to make. Or 4 million dollars of your own money. You had 0 monetary investment in this so why even care how long it took? Performance wise, nobody can objectively say it’s a bad game. There are nitpicks and buggy things like any game, but nothing about it has convinced me there’s anything legitimately poorly made or broken. This is probably why they harp on about the delays. It’s the only thing they can find.

Let me get The Last Guardian's cons out of the way first. I was quite vexed by the clunky camera and motion-sickened (at times) by the frame rate drops. I also disliked Trico's AI a bit, which left me waiting for nothing after shouting a command--a more obvious visual queue would have been appreciated on this front. All that said, The Last Guardian is a magnificent masterpiece. A game that, along with The Last of Us and Journey, begs critics outside of the gaming world to consider it a true work of art.

It's a work of art simply because of the sheer beauty of the entire experience. There's nothing quite like The Last Guardian in terms of its braveness to convey a story so simple and yet so effective. This is a game that will quickly let you know it's going to be an emotional journey and does not try to hide it. And at the end of it all, you get just that--a simple and honest, emotionally charged reward of an ending.

Never before have I felt so connected to a game's characters since The Last Guardian, and my hope is that you, the readers, become brave enough to look past its shortcomings and unravel for yourselves the bond between a boy and his Last Guardian!

A unique, one of a kind game, highly recommended for all animal lovers. The experience with Trico will be remembered for years to come.

Trico is actually not that hard to control so long as you know how to correctly interact with him. The major flaw I find in this game is the dull enemy design. But the best ever animal made in video games can make up for everything.

For me, this game is more of a revelation than even Shadow of the Colossus was. I consider it essential gaming because it advances the medium's potential for realism. The Last Guardian requires players to show greater care, have more patience, and take greater personal responsibility in forging their relationship with Trico, a character that is not simply an object that you badger with a stick or shoot with a gun or grab onto and pull, but is in its own right a more genuinely realized being than any other character I can think of in video games. Yes, you will have to wait for a giant bird-beast to scratch its ears before you can charge through the game's areas. But it is the frustration of having to account for your indispensable, dangerous counterpart that makes the game's jaw-dropping set pieces so emotionally visceral. I have never felt such raw and real emotions as I have playing this game. This game advances the medium because it can teach us about living in a world with not only other animals but other people. Few other games, if any, have realized this essential feature of the arts. Expand

Trico's actions, sorrowfulness, happiness, appreciation ...etc truly affects me. This game made me smile, worried, cry, laugh, and most importantly it made me experience a journey cannot be experienced any time soon, I guess.
Thank you @Fumito_Ueda for believing in your dreams after so many difficult years. I wish they will make a follow-up, something from Trico's viewpoint.
Finally, yes, this game has some control flaws, but it didn't affect my own experience AT ALL, that's why I'll not take anything out of my 10/10 here.

Stuck in almost 10 years of development hell, I never thought this game would be released. Excited to finally get my hands on it, I dove in this past week and ended up binging it all the way through.

The follow up to Shadow of Colossus and ICO has improved upon its predecessors in many ways in narration, graphics, and story. The interactions with Trico, your bird-dog friend, are incredibly believable and life-like. I've never felt such a strong attachment to a virtual animal before. They really nailed the animations and AI on Trico.

Unfortunately, it also suffers from the same glaring issue in all 3 titles: the controls. The control scheme is so incredibly awkward and frustrating at times that it can really hold the game back. If you can power through it and train your brain to it it's not so bad but it does take some patience.

Looking past the control issues, The Last Guardian is an incredibly unique game with a touching story filled with many jaw-dropping moments. It doesn't have the prettiest graphics or stable framerate but it makes up for it with life-like animations and an interesting story that starts off slow and goes out with a bang. One of the most unique games of this console generation.

    8/10

Final Verdict: Looking past the controls, it's a unique slow-burn experience that requires dedication but pays off in the end with an unbelievably life-like attachment to a pixelated animal companion.

AI of both opponents and Trico is sometimes so frustrating that it will make you confused during the playthrough (for example while giving orders to Trico to jump somewhere, he will hesitate and walk in circles sometimes, so you might assume that there is no way through. Guess what? You are going to waste lots of time searching for another route when you will finally find out that he just needed 10 minutes to position himself before making that jump, and you had to give him at least 5 orders. I have been through ICO, Shadow of the Colossus and unfortunately this is what I will remember more than the story - TERRBILE and frustrating controls.

Second and maybe even worse thing mentioned already many times: how can a simple game like this, with simple graphics, nearly no in-game characters on the screen be so badly optimized? This is beyond imagination, I mean this is a software DEDICATED to one platform. This is an absolute joke when it comes to framrate in this game.

The setting, art and atmosphere are very similar. However, instead of protect someone through the entire game, now you're the one who needs to be protect by your partner, which is some kind of gigantic winged dog called Trico. He's an adorable and very charismatic creature by the way. The objective is to escape from a fortress inside a crater and Trico's big size and strength will be necessary to overcome puzzles and obstacles, and also to defeat enemies (the boy can't defeat them all by himself). But to command his actions is not that simple. He's an animal after all and to make him execute one task you will need to repeat gestures and commands a lot do make Trico figure what you want him to do. Also, he gets hungry sometimes and we'll refuse to work if you don't bring food.

I see what developers tried to do, make him look and feel like a real animal. For most of time it works very well, but now and then Trico will test your patient. He gets distracted very often and sometimes we'll do what he wants to do. You'll need to constantly ask for his attention to execute every task and i can some people getting annoyed by this, specially during one particular sequence where Trico needs to dive. It's the most frustrating bit of the game by far and will probably get a lot of tries and swearing to beat this part. Honestly, i still can't say what i did wrong.

Also, the controls are not perfectly responsive, specially when i was trying to drop from Trico's body. The boy keeps getting stick on his feathers and the camera gets crazy. Jumping from a rope or chain to a platform is also very imprecise.

However, all the struggle to command Trico and constant fighting with the controls and camera are absolutely worth. The game is beautiful, fun, fresh and the friendship between the boy you play and the beast is very nice to watch and has a lot of touching moments.

The game is far from perfection and suffers the same problems that afflicted ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. By that, we mean really bad camera work and frustrating controls that are somehow unresponsive.

Those problems will give you headaches and you may well end up throwing your controller in the wall at times. One of the other deceiving side to The Last Guardian is probably it's visuals that seem to be have been stuck to ICO's era. On the PS3, those would have been just fine and almost great. But on PS4, it's kind of not acceptable. Some would say that the graphics are part of the game's art direction, but I don't think so. Seems to me that the game have been in development for so long that it hasn't been built from the ground up on a new engine at all. Draw distances are bad, the scenery mostly lost in an eerie fog mostly seem to be a memory space saving technique than a wanted ambiance setting.

BUT... yes, BUT! If you see past those major problems, you will find out an absolutely charming game that does one thing really good: having the ability of erasing it's flaws thanks to an absolutely absorbing gaming experience. I was really skeptic when I was playing though the first 10-20 minutes of the game. But all of a sudden, I found myself feeling involved in the characters relation and felt like it was almost impossible to put the controller down.

The Last Guardian is an emotional journey, one that will touch you right to the heart. Even with clunky controls and bad camera works, we tend to forget all about those and stay focused on the game's tale. You will get that kind of love/hate duality all through the game but ultimately, you will end up enjoying and loving the game more than you hate it. By the second half of the game, you won't mind it's flaws and find yourself having one of the best gaming experiences of 2016. Well, I surprisingly did.

If you liked ICO and SotC on PS3 or any other games that rely on "room-puzzle" solving and narrative settings, you will love The Last Guardian. And believe me, this game is an absolute must if you dig that kind of games. On the other hand, if you are looking for a more action packed experience, you better look elsewhere because you won't find it here.

At first, I was scared of being deceived by The Last Guardian, mostly due to it's ridiculous development progress and the numerous release dates that kept on being pushed back. In the end, I ended up playing a wonderful game that had me very surprised by it's overall quality, one that succeeds on helping me forget about everything that didn't work well in the game. Quite honestly, I anticipated this game to be part of our 2016 Worst Games Top 10 and after playing through it, I can assure you that it won't. It won't make it on our Best Games of 2016 either, but it's definitely a game to give a try to.

This is a 9/10 or a 10/10 game, depending on whether you think knocking off 10% because of the frustrating camera is justified. This is a game that'll go down as a classic, just like SOTC. But if you're immature and unintelligent and only like playing FIFA, Call of Duty and suchlike, this won't be for you.

Put it this way. This is a FAR better game than Uncharted 4. Uncharted 4, while enjoyable, is rather dull and unimaginative. We've seen it all before. None of us have seen The Last Guardian before. You will actually connect with a fantasy videogame creature on an emotional level. That's a far greater achievement than any game's accomplished this year.

It is a journey through a mysterious world that keeps you on your feet, and it will put you on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the game. It's a game that is masterfully crafted, I cannot believe how happy I was there was little to no story, a mostly empty world, and every obstacle that needed two things, you and trico. The puzzles were basic but always required you and trico to work together. Everything in the game immersed you into believing you needed each other, and watching the relationship grow from growling to whimpering when you jump off high ledges is a magical thing. The variety of obstacles and pacing of story was amazing, I can't tell you how many times I genuinely smiled throughout the game, because of either how surprised at the variety of gameplay I was, or how far me and trico had come since the start. The fact Trico is also the most life like A.I companion at such grand of an scale is great, it made me believe I had to earn it's trust. The best comparison I can give this game is telltale's walking dead season 1, but this one is miles better because of actual gameplay/puzzles and unpredictability of an non-human companion. The only downfall of this game is the technical issues (framerate and camera issues), but it really isn't that bad, the framerate got really bad at times sporadically, but it really is a non-factor to my enjoyment of the game. A lot of critics also hate the camera, I can say it really isn't that bad; camera gave me problems in tight spaces, but I had no camera problems during actual puzzle solving or important parts of the game. To end, masterfully crafted, beautifully told story and journey with you and the beast trico, one of the most memorable game experiences I've had. The only negative thing I have to say about this game is that the camera can ben annoying sometimes which makes some parts really frustrating and I do not care much about it but some things have the graphics of a PS3 model.

Really brings back memories. Great this game finally came out after so many years!

The Last Guardian is everything a good game should be. A great experience. While the gameplay may not be your cup of tea, and there are a few short comings, everything in this fantasy world is gripping and feels believable. From the amazing connection between the boy and the beast, to the gorgeously animated movements, this game is a must own on your PS4.

A true visionary genius of our time, or any time. A paragon of emotional and mystical storytelling regardless of medium and genre and he should recieve a nobel prize for animation, for they have gone above and beyond the currently percievable paradigm. I cried and cried and cried...i can't remember the last time i felt this connected to any world or character, again regardless of medium. Trico is more than computer graphics adhering to a set of code, it is a truly living breathing thing. you can absolutely feel it's prescence with your entire body. it feels like such a quantum leap in regards to A.I. that it's almost like they have made a new form of life...

truly one of the greatest, if not THE greatest achievement in interactive entertainment.

Otherwise they should just have let you control him but that would have been a completely different game. This is the thing about the Team Ico games. They are unique, they are different from anything else, they are poetic, they are quiet, they are about bonds that last long after the game is finished. I'm not sure if it is the better than Ico, but it sure plays better than SotC. Anyway, for me they are all 10s, wonderful games, among the best I've ever played, each with its qualities and flaws. Some of the reviews here are unfair; people are rating the game a 0-4 based solely on the camera and controls. I must agree that the camera is very irritating a lot of the time but it's easy to overlook. The controls are playable but just a bit archaic as they echo the controls in Shadow of the Colossus. While these are obviously important elements for a game, it's not everything.

The hype around this game has been absolutely insane, possibly one of the most hyped up games of the 2010s, if not the 21st century. People are complaining about how the whole game is just about guiding Trico around, but what did you expect? All of the trailers and gameplay videos showed that, and it was made pretty clear from the outset that the main premise of the game would be to guide Trico through puzzles. The AI is mildly unresponsive at times for sure, but try getting a cat to do what you want in real life and see how that goes for you. It portrays Trico as if it were a real animal and not as a robotic AI, so naturally it will not listen to the player some of the time. Saying that, Trico does get more obedient as the game progresses and as the relationship grows. Trico as an AI is an absolutely incredible achievement in gaming. The attention to detail with the movements and habits of different animals and the graphical achievement is fantastic. Trico isn't just a block that bends to the player's will, he genuinely feels like a secondary character and not just a burdening AI.

I have to admit that for the first 20-30 minutes of the game, I found the visuals a bit underwhelming. I thought the game looked very similar to the remastered Shadow of the Colossus so I was slightly disappointed, but as soon as the game progressed outside of the starting area, its true colours were shown, and it's damn pretty. The lighting is phenomenal as it casts a shadow from almost every single feather on Trico's body, and it really sets the mood for the game's final act. It's easy to tell that Team ICO spent most of their time working on Trico, as he is the most graphically advanced element of the game.

The soundtrack is sombre but can swell when tension rises; there isn't much to say about it really, it's just another orchestral soundtrack that lives in the same vein as Team ICO's other games. The audio on the beasts' cries and assorted sounds are brilliant and easily portray the emotions that they're trying to convey.

Despite its gameplay not being the most original and interlinking elements from Team ICO's previous games, it is done in such a way that makes the game feel unique and fresh. Its story is more than meets the eye which was a nice surprise, and isn't as predictable as people originally think.

Overall, this game is most definitely flawed but it's by far Team ICO's most personality filled game to date and all it requires is patience which isn't too much of a task when it's so easy to get lost in its universe.

The Last Guardian can at times be very frustrating, mostly due to the realistic behaviour of Trico. This could be seen as both a positive and negative thing, depending on your stance. For me it just deepened my bond with him, making the whole experience of the journey incredibly satisfying. Despite a few obvious gameplay flaws, The Last Guardian triumphs and soars when it gels.

Yeah...about that much time. Shadow of the Colossus was the game that had me anticipating the next game from team Ico. I did get around to playing Ico once the remastered version came to the PS3. I can appreciate a bleak, silent narrative and had an idea of what to expect going into The Last Guardian...a story told mostly through silence and a lonely journey towards some unhappy ending. For the most part I got that, but not without suffering through some of the most frustrating controls and camera behavior in my entire gaming history. (I am "old" by the way and have played games for many years.) The kid in this game is nice to look at animation-wise, but that comes at the cost of any type of sharpness when turning corners, dodging, jumping, swimming, climbing, or feeding barrels of who-the-hell-knows-what to your "pal" Trico. The controls are the main enemy in this game...nevermind the usual team Ico weird villians. We don't get shadow men or giants this time....simply stone statue men who chase the boy and try to carry you into doors to oblivion. Evading those guys was hell on earth. Running is terribly clunky and the boy will fall on his face half the time. You also have a dive move but the boy will jump and slam right into the wall (there are many tight corridors in the game) or into the stone guys and also face-plant over and over again. It was so frustrating trying to run away from those idiots over and over again while running back to a giant chain that I had to pull to open huge gates to get Trico inside the room just so he could smash them eventually. And after he does smash them he jumps around like he has rabies until you can sloppily climb on his back and give him a massage while attempting to pull spears from his body that the stone men toss into him. Trico is AI controlled and is pretty competent for the most part. He does tend to ignore your commands from time to time. There are lost of sections where he does most of the platforming for you, giving you a break from the sloppy controls. The game does a pretty bad job of telling you where to go next or what to look for if you don't pay attention to very small hints such as Trico investigating something or looking at a certain area. When Trico isn't around, things are even more ambiguous. You just may find yourself stuck for long periods of time before resorting to looking up guides on the internet. The bond the developers were going for between the boy and Trico never materialized with me because I was too buy trying to do simple things like climb Trico's body when I needed to with some sense of direction or getting him to respond to basic commands in the most simple sections. I was so tired of trying to fight the controls and get Trico to do what I wanted him to do that by the end I didn't care what happened to either one of the characters. And I was one of the players who didn't have that horrible a time figuring out what the game wanted of me. I caught on to all the commands and saw that Trico was basically pointing me in the right directions throughout the journey. The game isn't very long if you know what to do and where to go and there is no reason to play through it again after seeing the ending. It was just a very mediocre experience to me. The animation was great, the movement and feathers flowing in the wind was constantly pleasant to look at, the game was just never fun to play at any point...and in the end, that is what a video game is supposed to be...no matter how artistic the vision. I can only recommend this as a rental. I was hugely disappointed...even the ending was bland and not worth the trouble I went through to see it. I played this on the PS4 Pro I got it for 39.99. Anyone who paid 60 dollars for this was robbed. Expand

Once again, your patience is being tested by the clunkiest controls and climbing mechanics and the jankiest camera there is to encounter in a modern PS4 era videogame (aside from maybe the Shadow of the Colossus remake which is originally from the same guy/studio). Going up or down a ladder, picking things up, throwing things, jumping off a chain, etc.etc., EVERYTHING is so much harder than it has to be. Sometimes, the camera just straight up clips out and the screen goes black for a second. All of which is compounded severely by an AI companion that doesn't always seem very intent on following your commands. So, in essence, the challenge in this game comes from TRYING to get your character and his doggo to do what you want them to, not from actual gameplay. If this sounds like fun to you, get this game asap. For me, it's just a giant test of patience. In my estimation, the game would probably be half as long (which isn't very long to begin with, but seems like much more because it's so tedious, slow, and drawn-out) if you could actually get Trico to do what you want within one or two tries every time, that is to say, if the game ACTUALLY WORKED, instead of it being a constant struggle. As the cherry on top of the sh*t-cake, there's also an INCREDIBLE amount of lag in outside areas (on a PS4 Pro, mind you).

And this was in development for HOW many years? Ooooof... Maybe this studio should switch to making animated movies or short films instead.
