This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I waited 10 years for this? Graphically I did not see anything that the PS3 would not do. The impression I had was playing a remastered product. Even so, with all his technical problems, it's a good game. Just good and nothing more. Expand

This game has some very emotional moments and a pretty cute story. But it has its obvious issues as well. Very poor frame rate, outdated graphics and mechanics. It's an okay game at best, luckily I wasn't hyped for it so I am not disappointed. Overall, it wasn't terrible but there definitely were some times where the game was frustrating to play.

This game had lots of potential to be an masterpiece. But you cannot shake the feeling that this game feels like it is unfinished. Sloppy controls and annoying camera angles makes it feel ever worse. Also the game is pretty repeative and probably only thing in your mind at later parts of the game is "when is this gonna end?"

Strongest part in The Lat Guardian is the feeling of growing bond beetween you and Trico. Also story is good and interesting. Althought it leaves too much in dark and does not tell why everything happened in the first place. Too much questions remains.

This game has a big pro and that's the flying dog. He looks just great but that doesn't make up for the simple boring puzzles, the terrible camera-angles and other frustrating gameplay. I never mind dying in a game because i made a mistake but i do mind dying when the game makes the mistakes.

I found the Last Guardian to be very satisfying in their visual presentation of the boy, Trico, and their relationship. The two go from one problem to another, working together as they try to escape their current confinement, and move to the next. One problem is that their dilemma is pretty inexplicable. They're trapped in this huge labyrinthine castle. Not only are there no clues as to why given, but there are no little respite areas to explore. The demands just go on incessantly. Because the boy and Trico are, naturally enough, unable to converse, the stark settings and endless problems make the game's tempo austere and relentless. A bit more reveal on the backstory to stir up curiosity could have been melded with some non-death-defying interludes of exploration to open up the experience and make it more fun. As it is, if you want to spend many hours escaping a sometimes gorgeous prison, with leaps and creeps, going from one puzzle to another, with the help of a beautifully rendered beast-helper, but with nary a sign of another human (evil robots don't count) this is a great game for you. The puzzles aren't super challenging, but manipulating the boy and beast to solve them is often infuriating.

Pros: Trico is a cute character. Graphics are beautiful. Storyline is interesting and creative.

Final Thoughts: With the controls being as unresponsive as they are, this would make a better movie than game. I can't recommend it unless you have patience for finicky controls. I found myself screaming at the game throughout even to the very end when there was yet another repetitive cut scene where I wasn't sure if I had to press a button to make it continue or if I just needed to watch Trico look right then left then right then left then right then left again and again until he started doing something else. It was the latter, but I still pressed buttons, saw the boy do stuff, and then saw it have no effect whatsoever on the scene making me still not sure if I had to do something else. The pacing reminded me of older style Japanese films that are edited to progress slowly. It can be nice in a movie, but it's extremely frustrating in a game where it's unclear when the player is in control of pacing and when they aren't.
I'm so glad I got it on sale for $15. I would have been absolutely furious if I had paid $60 for this piece of beautiful garbage. Unfortunately, the stuff I liked didn't overcome the extremely frustrating experience of the game as a whole. I really want to like this game as much as I like Trico, but I just can't. The gameplay was too frustrating.

I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I could actually control the creature directly.

The atmosphere, environments, and the story are where most of the 5 star reviews seem to be coming from. These facets of the game are indeed excellent, but unlike the five-star reviewers I cannot look past the frustration of the controls and the camera angles.

If you can tolerate the frustrations outlined above, then you will have found yourself a very interesting game. Otherwise, it might be best avoided.

Lo Meh: 8 years ago this game was announced and sold as a PS3 incentive and there were reservations with content, stuffed animals, stickers and soundtrack in special editions and the game never came out or was canceled, in the end it came out but all that extra merchandise disappeared.

The physic realism strangely stop when you juste need to put the barrel 3 cm up but no you cant you need to throw it 256 times to the other platform so he can fall and stabilize. The function of the buttons in this game was not standard, for example, the character of the game jumps with the triangle button instead of the X button, which was not compatible with the habits of us gamers. (This problem does not affect the score I gave to the game)

But ultimately, the controls are completely broken and the AI is patchy at best. And when you consider this is a game which has to rely on tight controls and solid AI to be a success, the fact both are the weakest points of the title renders the whole thing dead on arrival. It is mechanically not fit for purpose.

Look, this will get high scores from those who are charmed head over heels by Trico (stunningly cute by the way), as well as the art style, to an extent the story and, let's be honest, the hype this game has received for years and years - but they're not scoring it high because it's a good actual game. It is borderline unplayable for large parts of the experience; you will fall off ledges, fail to interact with Trico, wait around for minutes for the AI to react to what you want to do... these really are deal breakers. Read the positive reviews on here - not one will realistically praise the game as a game; instead, they'll bang on about story and so on.

But I'm reviewing a game. This isn't a good game. And it's a crying shame, as they did the hard work and completely ballsed up the basics.

Oh, and for those who excuse Trico's AI because he's a dog and "dogs don't always listen in real life"... that's an unbelievably dumb argument, because we're talking about a video game, NOT real life. It has to work as a video game first and foremost. I can yell at a hedgehog in real life and it won't turn blue and run fast, and that's obvious as you wouldn't compare Sonic the Hedgehog to an actual damn hedgehog! Stop making excuses for broken AI.

    So what's the issues?

    1. The movement and input is among the worst I've ever seen. I've fallen of edges and missed jumps countless times simply because of how bad the input system is. It's easier to drive a tank than to control the character in this game. It's impossible to explain, you have to experience it.

    2. The camera, well, I won't even go there. Pathetic how it made it past quality assurance.

    2. Trico is literary retarded. Often you have to tell him 10 times what to do before he actually does it. Sometimes you try to make him jump and it doesn't work in 3 attempts which makes you think you're supposed to do something else and run around for 30 min just to come back and try again and this time it suddenly works. I've had to restart checkpoints simply because Trico bugs out (tail getting stuck on things so I can't reach and climb it, getting stuck not doing anything etc) and after restart it works again, when I do the exact same commands at the exact same spot. You won't know if you're unable to progress because you're doing something wrong or because the game has simply bugged out. If it happened once or twice it would be okay, but it's happeing ALL THE TIME.

Team Ico is a lot like Taylor Swift after Kanye interrupted her at the MTV Awards a few years back, meaning they're pretty much immune to criticism. If The Last Guardian was released on PS3 it would be deserving of a higher review score, but releasing and charging premium price for a game that is tantamount to a upscaled PS3 port on PS4 is just dirty pool by Sony.

I would say though that if you like Ico and SotC you should probably try The Last Guardian. The Last Guardian to me was a great idea that didn't quite pan out. To be honest it really feels like a ps2 game. It is definitely very beautiful in it's own way but I feel it suffers from a lot of problems ps2 games had back in the day that have by now been improved upon and almost perfected like the camera, or hit detection etc. The camera is the absolute WORST when in tight spaces. Granted, once the game opens up a bit it's not quite as bad, but when it is bad it is super frustrating. My other problem is Trico (the bird dog). Sometimes you will ask Trico to do something and 60% of the time he will either just stare at you like an idiot or do the exact opposite. I understand that Team Ico wanted to make the relationship a bit more complex by giving Trico a mind of his own, and setting a sort of "language barrier", but in my humble opinion that is NOT fun. I got to a environmental puzzle where I thought I had to get Trico to jump up to a small platform and I kept telling him to jump SEVERAL times and he just wouldn't do it. Then I started to think that maybe that was not where I was supposed to go so I spent a little over 30 minutes trying to find the way to go. When I couldn't find anywhere else to go besides up, so I go back to the same EXACT spot I tried before and tell Trico to jump one more time and he does it immediately! WTF!? That and the completely absurd camera made this game so frustrating to the point where I almost didn't even finish it, but my friends kept telling me the ending is worth the frustration. Well, I just finished it and I gotta say it's really good. The whole story is really good! It is just a shame that my frustrations with the game totally erase any motivation to ever play it again. Although I have the utmost respect for both Team Ico and their fans I just can't give The Last Guardian anything higher than a 5. Like I said the story is definitely worth a play through but with all of the ps2 era problems that have for the most part been fixed by now The Last Guardian should be bought at a very steep discount. Shadow Of The Colossus is my favorite game of all time, and Ico is amazing in it's own right too. However, I am pained to say The Last Guardian, perhaps my most anticipated game of all time, has fallen extremely short of my expectations.

I'm going to come out and say it right now, This game looks beautiful. I cannot find a single fault in the graphics, as such with the soundtrack. Although no tracks exactly stuck with me like in SOTC, i still enjoyed it all. Trico is adorable, and I found myself engrossed in his small mannerisms and personality than I probably should have. As much as I love all the care and effort put into the world, and the aesthetics of the game,....I have to say it.... this game is just boring for the most part.

Let me just say, if you're not a fan of Ico or SOTC, The Last Guardian may not have anything for you. This game sold solely based on its likeness to those 2 games. The beginning of the game is great, the ending is fantastic, but I found myself loathing almost everything inbetween. Really, not much happens. The gameplay mostly consists of you, as a little boy, guiding Trico to the next area, where you can do it again to get to the next area. I just didn't find it fun. While I did enjoy the 2 characters and the bond they formed, I for the most part couldn't bring myself to play the game for more than an hour before shutting it off.

I see a lot of complaints about the controls, I don't see that at all. The controls are fine, it's just the overall gameplay design that falls flat. The combat is mostly just watching Trico smack enemies across the room, then petting him when its over. A lot of the time, the puzzle solutions are really easy, it's just the tedious act of getting there that kills it for me. Also, Trico's AI is sometimes amazing, sometimes poor. I found myself having to give a command 20+ times before he heeded. Part of me feels this is a gameplay design, to have it behave just like a wild animal, and if so, I applaud. But if not, then it needs to be fixed.

Like I said, I am really hurt to give this game such a low score, but this is legitimately how I felt when playing it. I just didn't enjoy it. I really would have liked to, but I just couldn't. This was my most hyped game of all time, it was supposed to be my GOTY, not my most dissapointing game of the year. 5/10

My own character less so...mostly because of the incredibly soft controls and the fact that the only forward motion available is slowly creeping along in a funny cartoon like pose or running headlong, and subsequently falling off ledges etc. However, sadly I found that I could only play it in short bursts because I just found it not fun enough to put up with the ongoing frustration of the rubbish controls and trying to figure out what to do and where to go next with virtually zero direction. I eventually 'got' that you have to try everything until something works but it's hard to tell sometimes whether you're simply barking up the wrong tree or the right tree but doing it wrong. In the end though, the thing that broke it for me was the difficulties in managing my own characters movements. I got to a place where I had to get Trico to jump up against a wall so I could leap off his head onto a broken staircase and I did eventually get Trico in position four or five times.....each time taking quite a while as he does everything slowly...but then I could NOT get myself positioned to make the leap accurately and would just fly off into space instead, then have to start the whole process again. I don't know what's going on with that but I found at different times in the game I fell off him because my character wasn't holding on or he wouldn't stop holding on when I wanted him to jump off. Aaaargh! What is that? Other than just bad programming?? It's not a a new experience for me to arrive at a point in a game where I hit a wall and have to repeat over and over until I get the hang of it or figure out what I'm supposed to do, but in this instance I eventually came to the conclusion that I just wasn't having enough fun to want to keep trying. Visually it is beautiful - the animation is often stunning - and I would have liked to see where the story went but at the end of the day it was a definite 'IRBPSE' situation....I'd Rather Be Playing Something Else. The game is basically ICO, but full of obstacles and basic puzzles that require your giant pet to progress. The variety in puzzles is a little disappointing. They mostly consist of opening doors to get your pet through them, and then after you get your pet through the door, having your pet jump to an area that was previously inaccessible to you. Also disappointing is that there's normally only one way to solve each puzzle. Many are carefully scripted with specific pet actions, so there's not much thinking outside of the box possible here.

Initially, controlling the pet is annoying. You get some hand signals later on that improve things, but then it just becomes slightly less annoying.

The story is vague, though less vague than ICO or Shadow of the Colossus. You'll actually get some background story information and closure with this installment. The game goes for an animal friendship theme and does it pretty well, though some people aren't big fans of this type of story.

Oh, and don't forget the Uncharted moments. There's plenty of impossibly amazing moments in the game, primarily consisting of your giant pet's weight or size breaking bridges or other things and then you just barely escaping though no skill of your own, but because it's a scripted scene. I'm a bit sad that the studio who bought us ICO and Shadow of the Colossus has stooped to this level of dumb storytelling. But hey, kids these days like it.

So it was an alright game for me. After I got used to the initial pet-controlling annoyance, I ended up completing it in less than 15 hours. And I'm glad it didn't take longer than that.

The gameplay consist of solving environmental puzzles by using the boy and the beast.
They can be challenging and sometimes frustratingly vague or difficult to perform due to the delayed controls.
My main issue with this game is that it is a work of art, but as with work of arts not everyone appreciates or cares for it. And this game is that work of art for me. Fantastic beautiful environments and there are some precious moments as the bond unfolds between the boy and beast but, the controls that are slightly delayed, the frustrating moments you are trying to get the beast to perform an action and it's stubbornly hard to get it to move (sure maybe that is deliberately lifelike but it's still not a gameplay aspect I enjoy), the lack of replayability unless you really care for trophies and very similar actions and environments throughout the gameplay did not make this game all that enjoyable to me.
I'd probably rate it a 4 but the fantastic animations, especially Trico (probably one of the best animated characters/figures in a game to date) really deserves a point on it's own.
I have a Whippet and sometimes I swear it was like I was watching a film of my dog, that's how well animated and lifelike Trico is.
If you come into this game and expect anything like Shadow of the Colossus, you are going to be dissapointed.
If you get it through PS+ or at a "indie price" it'll be well worth a try but for me, this game at full price wasn't worth it.
It's a game let down by the controls and in my case because it's niche doesn't appeal to me personally.

Shigeru Miyamoto, one of the, if not the greatest game designer in the world once said that the most important aspect of game design is game play. Every serious game developer should have that tattooed into their damn brains. I find it surprising that Ueda tested the game before release and thought to himself, "this is good, let's go with this". To me, there are obvious problems with the game. First of all, the game play of the boy is just ridiculous. Sure, it's nice to have all these animation but there's no reason why he couldn't be programmed to take advantage of the full range of movement of the joystick. You're either moving at a snails pace or running. It's obviously ridiculous. And many games do this and it's just objectively wrong. A perfect example of better gameplay when it comes to movement is A Link Between Worlds. Every minute increase of the thumbjoy in a certain direction directly translates into a noticeable increase in Link's movement speed, giving the user the full range of motion and speed that is possible with the stick. THAT is how you do it. Secondly the camera is ridiculous. You test the game out and still think that camera is ok? I don't know what to say to that. Thirdly the graphics look like they're from a PS3. They should've been improved.. or, honestly, the game should've been released for PS3. Then just get some other developer to take care of the port to Ps4. In the meantime Ueda could've been half finished his next game. Come on, man. Fourthly, the game runs poorly. The low framerate hurts my eyes, I can't play longer than a couple of hours at a time. It seems like the game was not ported that well and it took way too long to do it. I wish Japanese developers in general would put more money into a project. Anyways, I really thought this could've been much better.

I love Team Ico. I played Shadow of the Colossus over and over again - every released iteration of it. I even scoured the game for years looking for the ill-rumored 17th colossus along with many other people on the internet. After that I bought and played through Ico, which I loved in spite of having some issues with it the core gameplay. I think Team Ico offers something not seen anywhere else in their excellent ambiance, storytelling, and world building. In those aspects, they are masters of their craft and have my utmost respect.

That being said, do you remember the several smaller colossi from Shadow of the Colossus? The ones that shook around and were hard to move around on, causing a lot of frustration? At its worst, The Last Guardian is an entire game of that, except you also have to convince that colossus to go where you want it to go.

I watched the very first video reveal of this game back in 2009, on the day it game out, and was excited for the next seven years until the game was released. On the surface it is an incredibly charming game that masters the three qualities I listed above, but it is so frustrating that at times it is hardly a playable game. It is an escort quest where your progression depends entirely on the cooperation of the character being escorted, who just happens to not listen to you most of the time. This leads to many, many gameplay segments where you have already solved the puzzle, but have to keep spamming commands for 40 minutes before you can get Trico to do what you want and progress. All the while, the game is giving you blatant hints for the puzzle you have already solved. There is even a part of the game where you are falling to your death and Trico has to catch you, and very often, he just... doesn't. I fed Trico every barrel I came across to make him like me more, but there wasn't much of a noticeable difference. I think the people who rate this game so highly have never run into the unfortunate stuck points that seems to plague a bunch of players, so their experience wasn't marred by it. This mechanic is a great idea on paper, but in practice it unfortunately takes much of the game down with it.

It's no surprise that I sold the game in frustration back in 2017, abandoning hope of ever enjoying it enough to make up for the frustrating gameplay. This year (2019) I found it again for rent at the local library and decided to give it another shot, since I have so much good faith in the developer (and maybe I was just in a bad mood in 2017). I continued where I left off. Unfortunately, not 10 minutes into playing my old file, I ran into what is apparently one of the most infamous spots in the game where Trico doesn't listen, and became stuck in a pit waiting for him to decide to lower his tail for me to climb up on. I think I waited down there for about half an hour before I could get the game to do what it was supposed to.

This game is one of the most beautiful games I have ever played, and in spite of the frustrations, I truly cared about Trico by the end of it. But you need a lot (and I mean a lot) of patience to get there.

Shadow of the Colossus is easily in my top 10 games of all time, making this review a bit of a sad affair.

    The Good
    - It's an interesting concept, combing Ico with Shadow of the Colossus, tag-teaming with a giant creature to try and solve puzzles and navigate a crumbling ruin.
    - The graphics, while overall looking very PS3 instead of PS4, occasionally have their moments and can occasionally be beautiful. The physics feels pretty cool, things bounce around and smash nicely.
    - The animation on the creature is spot-on. The animators did a really good job of bringing it to life and giving it personality.

    The Bad
    - It's clear this game languished in development hell for years. There's hints of a solid concept here, but it looks like the developers couldn't actually make things work to match with the creator's vision. The result is a glorified tech demo.
    - Many puzzles are so obtuse you will literally never figure them out without consulting a walkthrough. Puzzles are repeated a dozen times, i.e. 'oh another eye mirror, how do I smash this one?' Several puzzles just aren't that interesting to solve anyway, less 'aha!' and more 'are you kidding me, that's what you wanted me to do?'. As your frustration increases, halfway through the game you'll give up and just have the walkthrough open on your phone anyway. A few play-testing sessions watching actual players get permanently stuck would have cleaned all this up immeasurably.
    - The game is *extremely* linear. I get the impression after years of failed attempts to create an interactive, exploratory experience with the creature/code failing to fulfill it's end of the bargain the team was forced to cut back to something extremely short, linear, repetitive and largely based on cutscenes. Expect 20-25% of the game to be waiting patiently until you can play again. There is one way through and if you can't find it you will simply wander around in a room until you do. In some cases you're not supposed to be wandering anyway, the creature will simply hop to the next section for you, much to your frustration.
    - The boy's controls, presumably in the interest of showcasing his fluid animations, making the game feel tense and/or your character feel a bit helpless, are extremely sloppy. Halfway through the game you're still getting tutorial prompts because you still need them.
    - If you need a Japanese voiceover with subtitles to tell you what to do every other puzzle or so you've completely failed at prompting the player to solve things on his/her own. Go back to the drawing board and clean up the level design and cues/clues so that the player feels like they're figuring things out on their own.
    - Mashing buttons to make glowing shapes go away every time you die is such a poor design decision I can't believe it actually shipped in the final version of the game. This makes me wonder if nobody on the team is able to even give the creator feedback anymore, or if everything is subservient to his 'vision'.

    The Ugly
    - The creature's AI is a nightmare of indifference, ineptitude, confusion and irritation. The creature failed to catch me a half dozen times leading me to fall to my death, but suddenly caught me once, long after I'd assumed I was doing the wrong thing and explored every avenue for another route. I also sat in a tree for about 20 minutes mashing the 'help' button until it decided it was ready to save me. That's beyond ridiculous. That's not gameplay. It's more like if you took your dog to the supermarket and tried to painstakingly teach him to shop for groceries over days or weeks while it looked at you in confusion. After hours of begging, pleading and cajoling, and occasionally screaming at it, I actually grew to hate the stupid thing. I'm assuming this was not the studio's intention, lol.
    - The 'cinematic' camera is one of the most frustrating things I've experienced in a video game. The only explanation here is an underpaid, irate programmer who was hell-bent on creating something that would literally nauseate players.

    1) Controls are not clear, it's a complete guess-the-controls game. Literally, there are parts of the game where you have to press all the buttons desperately, like when you play mortal kombat against your non-gamer girlfriend.
    2) Camera control is annoying, it loses context all the time and it's impossible to focus on what you want. You can't even enjoy the environment because the camera moves around alone, making you lose focus of everything.
    3) You're supposed to have control over Trico (your companion), but it follows your instructions as much as a puppy, so you can imagine how annoying this is.
    4) It's the first game with puzzles where it's not enough to know the solution. You have to be completely sure about that, because you have to yield to your pet, run and scream loudly, and even pray, to get the damn pet to do what it needs to do.
    5) In terms of technical achievements, the game has nothing. Really bad graphics, bad performance (even in a PS4 Pro the frame rate drops to less than 15fps in small areas), but I think that's acceptable since the game was 10 years in development and the PS4 was not even in the radar when they started with this game.
    6) Funny thing, there's a trophy if you complete the game in less than 5 hours. It's a game to be completed in 2 hours if the god damn pet follow your instructions, but it's so slow and annoying that it ends up taking 12 hours...

Second and maybe even worse thing mentioned already many times: how can a simple game like this, with simple graphics, nearly no in-game characters on the screen be so badly optimized? This is beyond imagination, I mean this is a software DEDICATED to one platform. This is an absolute joke when it comes to framrate in this game.

The Last Guardian has been the biggest disappointment of the gaming year, for this SOTC lover and has taught me a valuable lesson I should have learned long ago: DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
Having played SOTC (Shadow of the Colossus being one of the most revered gaming titles in existence, and a personnel favourite of mine-easily taking 3rd prize in my most beloved games of all time) when I was younger on the PS2, I was very stoked for the release of Team Ico's next new IP when it was announced in 2008. But now, having laying my hands upon the final product, I feel nothing but regret for my purchase decision and a sense of remorse for the missed potential of this game.
Firstly, let's list the glaring issues of The Last Guardian. The most unforgivable flaw of this game is the very thing that was that was the primary focus of the marketing campaigns: The relationship between the boy and the colossal bird-mammal hybrid, Trico. This boils down into several factors, the most predominant being Trico's AI; the majority excusing this for natural animal behaviour, which I would dispute, as the major initiative of any game development team is to prioritise gameplay that elicits a sense of enjoyment and engagement from the player (whilst realism is subjectively important, to certain games, it should always take a backseat to gameplay). To substantiate, Trico will not always obey your commands, which would be perfectly acceptable if it was done in moderation, but it instead becomes a severe contributor to the overall tedium of the game which is further compounded by the need to constantly feed the creature and also have to calm him down after every combat encounter (which whilst nuanced and endearing at first, loses its effect further into the game).
Moving on, the level design and puzzles of the game feel highly derivative and uninspired for the most part. Whilst, admittedly, the art direction and visuals of the game are utterly breath taking when they want to be, most of the levels of The Last Guardian feel very generic and really blur together due to their similarity, in addition to seemingly being suspiciously reminiscent of the world design in Team Ico's first title Ico. In terms of puzzles, their solutions are often times incredibly simple, reducing The Last Guardian's gameplay to boring and repetitive hunts to find where Trico can jump up to or down from different points in the environment or to search and destroy stain glass eyes. A closing note concerning artistic choices of the game developers: the game is overly cinematic (not in the sense of cut-scenes) which I found to be quite jarring and disruptive of the pacing of the game, in addition to severely overdoing certain "emotionally" evocative tropes (i.e. I lost count of how many times Trico saved the protagonist's life, but it must have been more than ten!).
Finally (props if you've made it this far) the meagre longevity of the game will be a major deterrent for most prospective buyers. Overall, I spent 6 hours slogging through The Last Guardian's unfulfilling and unengaging plotline and have not even looked at the game since. The Last Guardian's lack of any real replay value (an element which was not overlooked in SOTC with it's hard mode and time trials mode-for both normal and hard difficulties, totalling at a minimum of 4 playthroughs-which overall acted to enrich the experience) really cripples it in the long term.
And as a final, final note: the controls and camera in The Last Guardian are borderline infuriatingly broken, ranging from inputs being either misinterpreted or multiplied by 10 (when you want to carefully walk around an edge, the game will sometimes propel you off said edge in a full throttle sprint) to the fact that there is no dedicated 'grab' button (a staple of the series) instead having to rely upon an 'auto-grab' feature which was very unreliable at the times in which I needed it the most-usually resulting in the boy plummeting to his death.
In conclusion, as you are no doubt aware of my begrudging animosity towards this game, I would strongly recommend you steer clear of this game, at least for now (the £50 price-tag isn't worth the 5-10 hours of gameplay you can squeeze out of this PS4 exclusive). Overall I cannot assert my disappointment for this game I (and a whole host of many others) have waited for, for 8 years of which a tumultuous development cycle has clearly taken its toll on such a renown and respected development team-for which I would partly blame Sony for. I know this game has been met with mostly positive reviews, but it has not been the recipient of critical acclaim across the board. I sincerely hope the voices of those with an opinion akin to that of mine own are not drowned out and are listened to by the developers, because I know Team Ico are undeniably passionate about their products and their fan base, and I know they have in them the capacity to produce utter masterpieces and works of ART.

While the game has a nice concept and does minimalism well, it's the same minimalism that hurts it. The game suffers from a few big issues that negatively affect it as a whole product The controls, camera, AI and gameplay are all lacking. On the plus side, it has a relatively solid concept that is a little flawed and a great soundtrack and art design.

The biggest issue the game has is a mixed feeling towards gameplay, AI and control. Control feels like it's taken a huge step back from SOTC and the autogrip mechanic is by far the worst thing I've seen in a game in the last 5 years.
Gameplay is beyond non existant to incredibly repetitive. You make your way through rooms to reach the end goal fetching food for your companion, destroying obstacles or pulling levers. It has a few really low points involving physics based puzzles that really hurt the pace of the game. Speaking of pace, this is why I felt I had to give the game such a low score. Trico's AI is based around sometimes disobeying orders which is a neat gimmick, but is one that will lead to some frustration and a lot of wasted time. I had issues with the AI being so broken that I needed to restart the game to progress past some points. I can see this harming the replayability greatly for me as I didn't find the game challenging and it felt much more like a slow guided tour.

It feels as though the concept has not been fully realised and that while it has a nice story, great art design and soundtrack it is entirely lacking simply because of the medium it is presented in. I've played lots of great bargain bin flops that I feel the same way about as The Last Guardian.

While the game has it's good points, the negatives weigh it down so much that it can be really tough to make it through to the end. You'll see 10/10's around but it's hard to give a game a perfect score when it has imperfections. For a game that has taken so long from inception to release, certain aspects feel wholly unfinished and seem to clash entirely with the games concept.

Once again, your patience is being tested by the clunkiest controls and climbing mechanics and the jankiest camera there is to encounter in a modern PS4 era videogame (aside from maybe the Shadow of the Colossus remake which is originally from the same guy/studio). Going up or down a ladder, picking things up, throwing things, jumping off a chain, etc.etc., EVERYTHING is so much harder than it has to be. Sometimes, the camera just straight up clips out and the screen goes black for a second. All of which is compounded severely by an AI companion that doesn't always seem very intent on following your commands. So, in essence, the challenge in this game comes from TRYING to get your character and his doggo to do what you want them to, not from actual gameplay. If this sounds like fun to you, get this game asap. For me, it's just a giant test of patience. In my estimation, the game would probably be half as long (which isn't very long to begin with, but seems like much more because it's so tedious, slow, and drawn-out) if you could actually get Trico to do what you want within one or two tries every time, that is to say, if the game ACTUALLY WORKED, instead of it being a constant struggle. As the cherry on top of the sh*t-cake, there's also an INCREDIBLE amount of lag in outside areas (on a PS4 Pro, mind you).

And this was in development for HOW many years? Ooooof... Maybe this studio should switch to making animated movies or short films instead.

Even when you know 100% what the solution to a puzzle is, you have to spend agonizing minutes trying to get the stupid AI of the creature to realize what it's got to do, and 9 times out of 10 it won't do it, because the creature isn't in the EXACT position and the EXACT rotation if needs to be to perform the action, and there's no way you can direct it to be, it's just blind luck when it gets itself into the right place.
When you're constantly being forced to fight against the controls in order to play the game you know it's a failure.
Such a shame because the premise, and the bond between creature and boy is lovely, but then the game utterly ruins the entire experience with trash controls that are beyond frustrating.

I resorted to using a walkthrough in the end just because I had no patience left or any desire to figure the puzzles out on my own, and just wanted it to be over as quickly as possible.

I'd read mixed reviews before I played it but thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt seeing as I loved ICO and Shadow of the Colossus. Unfortunately, all the negative stuff turned out to be absolutely true, and virtually game-breaking.

The camera is SHOCKING, there were numerous times when my entire screen went completely black. I wondered if it had frozen on me, but no, the camera was stuck inside a wall or another object and therefore I couldn't see anything.

The AI of Trico is unbelievably frustrating, and super unreliable and inconsistent. Yes, some may argue this makes it more genuine given its a random untrained creature, however the result is simply an unenjoyable and immersion-breaking experience. Sometimes you'll get stuck in a section, trying to figure out the "puzzle" and way to progress. You'll be questioning yourself: "I swear this is what I need to do, but it's not working, so I'll try something else..." Only to discover five minutes later you WERE doing the right thing and it was just the AI not cooperating or doing what you were instructing it to do.

There are also multiple instances where you will die, but at no fault of your own. Either due to poor control and mechanics (especially climbing), or Trico may just decide to swat you off the edge of a castle while trying to attack the baddies.

I'm ok of I fail at something due to my lack of skill or knowledge, but to fail due to something completely out of your control is proper rage-inducing.

Some of the puzzles are interesting, but too often they're ruined by the aforementioned frustration and continuous trial and error. And many of the puzzles are just bland and unimaginative.

I do not recommend this, not even for fans of the previous games. While there's a nice story or message buried somewhere, it's just not worth the pain of unearthing it and all the crap you've got to trudge through to get there.

And that's all the good I have to say about the game. The controls, camera, AIs, and collision management are so abysmally bad and frustrating that about halfway through the game, I gave up and pulled a walkthrough off the internet to get through this as quickly as possible. Climbing on top of this creature and getting off its back (something you need to do constantly and casually throughout the game) is like pulling teeth--only far less successfully. I've stopped counting the number of times I've plummeted to my death because the controls didn't respond the way they should have. Giving direction to the creature (Trico) is incredibly try-and-error. You can do the right thing, but you'll need about 10 repetitions of the command before it finally does something. Waiting for the inevitable downtime that this game forces upon you led me to play another game on my iPad while this was happening--I'm not kidding, it was that bad.

But I'll admit that the ending is touching and relatively well done. I hadn't expected the twist and it was a positive experience--sadly, one of the rare ones.

I get what they were TRYING to do. They failed. Miserably.

    To expensive (4 hours of game-play and that 4 60 €)
Runs like **** mostly 20 FPS
Just good lighting but the graphics are bad (in close up sequences it look like a ps2 game)
    ps4 exclusive
    bad control of your companion
    very stretched
    bad camera in smal spaces

I played the game for some hours. I like the story. the Trico is interesting.
BUT the camera is bad, you can hardly see useful things some times.
The control is rubbish, you have to try over and over again for some simple move.
Image quality is still in 2009 standard.
Wake up! it is now 2016 4K gaming!

Excesivo hype para un juego de ps3 y con una duración ridicula. Fallos de cámara, control... las emociones que genera el juego no son suficientes para quitarte la sensación de que es un juego que pese a llevar 10 años de desarrollo, es de la generación anterior.

A huge disappointment after loving Shadow of the Colossus. This feels much more like a passion project for the developers than a game, the camera and controls make it nearly completely unplayable with odd button choices and no way to reassign functions. The puzzles are obtuse, although to be fair I did not play it all the way though as I think I'd have had an aneurysm. Such a shame thatA huge disappointment after loving Shadow of the Colossus. Such a shame that for so much work to have gone into this they didn't make it fun to play. Don't pay more than $10 for it. Expand

This game was delayed countless of times, supposedly this game was in development for 10 years, which i find hard to believe considering game's poor performance, it can't maintain stable 30 fps, frame rate drops so often it gives me a feeling of trying to run recent games on a outdated computer, just remind all of you it was meant to be PS3 game, yet it doesn't run properly on a superiorThis game was delayed countless of times, supposedly this game was in development for 10 years, which i find hard to believe considering game's poor performance, it can't maintain stable 30 fps, frame rate drops so often it gives me a feeling of trying to run recent games on a outdated computer, just remind all of you it was meant to be PS3 game, yet it doesn't run properly on a superior hardware. This isn't acceptable.
On top of that the game controls and camera are horrible, graphics are not very good either, it looks like game from 2006, if this game was truly in a development for 10 years then there's no hope for these developers, i have feeling like this game was meant to be scraped entirely, but Sony forced them to realese it.
Besides i found this game's positive reviews to be very suspicious, i checked some profiles of "people" who posted positive reviews and most of them are empty profiles, just one review, no older reviews or rating or newer ones. I even checked this site on wayback machine and i saw instant jump from both negative and positive reviews matching each other to overwhelming amount of positive reviews.

Point for kitty-doggie-cutie. Point for the idea. Zero for the implementation.

Performance is horrible. Average of 15-20 FPS on a fat model with drops to 10, and the game doesn’t even look fantastic. Two years earlier, The Last of Us Remastered, looks on par or better, runs steady 50-60 FPS. It’s hard even to think when all you see is a blurred slideshow, save get immersed in the game’s

Speaking of which, this game suffers from the same problem as Uncharted the original. The surroundings are hardly varying as you go by. Unless you enjoy mossy ruins very much, you’ll get bored pretty soon.

Although, Uncharted the original had some chatacter interaction to make you stick around. In this game, there’s no story. There are a few cutscenes that don’t explain pretty much anything. You don’t know who your character is, why is he here, where is "here", where are you going, who are you fighting. Nothing.

Yes, there is this cat-like creature from the cover picture, Trico, and there’re relations between it and the Boy (yes, this is officially protagonist’s name), but again - no idea who this creature is or why is it here or where is here. It’s really hard to identify or connect with someone or something you know nothing about, no matter how cute they appear to be.

Enough has already been said about controls. I spent far more time struggling with Trico to make it do what I want that acctually solving the puzzles. Infuriating, that’s the word.

Oh, the puzzles... there is one - no spoilers - that you cannot possibly solve on your own unless you are super patient or super stubborn.

The last straw for me was the bug. There’s one place when you need Trico to dive, and it just won’t. It would dive and turn around and surface back again. I googled it, a lot of people had this bug too. And something broke inside of me. I felt that I’m not going to fight with this game anymore. I wasn’t emotionally invested enough to suffer much longer. So I dropped it. I never dropped a game before.

No one should ever release, or sell, or play games of such horrendous execution quality.

The AI was horrible, my animal friend got stuck in the wall all the time and wouldn't listen to me, making the game harder than it had to be.

After 7 years in what seems to be development hell, Team Ico finally introduces us to the majestic Trico and its heartfelt relationship with a young protagonist. While the long development cycle does show its age in certain parts up to a point of some frustration. The experience as a whole is one of the most unique ever.

The Last guardian is indeed suffering from some technical and control input issues, but its warm, beautiful adventure filled with countless touching moments is something we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives. The Last Guardian is not just a game, it’s an absolute work of art.

The Last Guardian doesn't just live up to its forebears' legacy, it goes further. Despite the callbacks to Fumito Ueda's previous works, it is a unique creation. Outside of indie experiments, we don't get to say that about modern videogames often enough.
