II think 8 is the perfect score for this game. It was good, but it didn't left impact on me. I mean, i got bonded with the creature but it was not a emotional rollercoaster as i thought it would be. But game is unique, which is good.

Look, if the ending wasn't as satisfying it would have gotten a 6. 7 max. Yeah the controls are frustrating. The puzzles are good. Not amazing.

The Last Guardian is the latest game from Fumito Ueda, of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus fame. It is definitely echoing ICO (I loved that game!) in its basic structure. The player controls a young boy and along with the giant beast named Trico they have to escape from a castle and a mysterious force that keeps them trapped. The story background is vague but its centre plot is really touching.

The game is based on environmental puzzles and a bit of platforming in some huge areas. Therefore you have to treat Trico as a giant moving platform/ladder that you can freely move around and scale. You will be amazed when you and Trico jump over big chasms, it's a new sense of gaming scale. You can also give some commands to Trico, but it is programmed to behave as a real animal instead of the always obedient horse in Shadow of the Colossus, and this can lead to some frustrations. There are times when Trico will act on his own, jump to some place only to come back at the same spot. Thankfully this isn't anything gamebreaking, but still it's an issue that appears from time to time.

The biggest problem for me is poor frame rate on standard PS4 and heavy controls, along with a laggy and cumbersome camera. I am not fanatic about fps numbers, I can forgive the constant 20-25 fps, but the controls are a bit floaty. Since the same issues were present on both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, it must be a Fumito Ueda trademark. At least PS4 Pro owners can run the game at 1080p and locked 30fps, for a more enjoyable experience than the 4K mode.

The Last Guardian is a clear 10/10 score in terms of concept, art, architecture and the whole Trico animation, but the aforementioned issues bring it down to an 8/10 score. Still these are not able to seriously detract from one of the best and most moving experiences in videogames. The game suffered from its nearly 10-year-long development and numerous delays, but it has finally delivered Fumito Ueda's vision for his kind of games. Let's hope Ueda-san comes back with another adventure.

Of course, I am sure there are exceptions to this, but they feel too similar in terms of gameplay, movements and environmental puzzles.

Trico's movements and AI should be praised as it is a technical marvel. It feels alive, it is not your everyday AI companion. And the way Team Ico makes the relationship between the boy and Trico develop through gameplay feels genuine, organic and human. This alone gives a lot of life and humanity to the game.

The art of the game is what you can expect from a Team Ico game. Both the music and the environmental design is fantastic. Personally, I finished the game wanting more from this world, from its culture, its creatures, and I feel this universe has potential for an animated series. The world feels so well crafted that 10 hours of -good- gameplay don't do it justice. I simply wanted more.

There are a few things that prevent this game from a higher score in my opinion:

    - A few minor frame drops. It does not happen all the time, but they are likely to occur in outside areas.
    - Trico's instruction and command system. I feel this system has a learning curve and eventually you will learn which commands are most useful in certain circumstances. However, I feel the game fails to make this system more accessible for everyone.
    - Camera issues at some points.

Despite these problems, the game was an amazing experience for me, and I definitely recommend it. For those who don't enjoy puzzle / platforming games, I still think you should give it a try because of its story, character development and, of course, Trico.

The camera is often difficult to control, there are glitches and controlling Trico can be frustrating but the story is masterfully crafted. It gets progressively better the further you get. I can't think of any games in recent memory that gave me such an experience of wonder and made me want to learn more about its world.

While it is certainly a game with flaws, the Last Guardian is the definition of being more than the sum of it's parts. Just like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, it is a game that is far more about it's mystery, imaginative concepts and emotional journey than it is about gameplay. There were times that I was frustrated by the controls, camera and gameplay restrictions but at the end of the journey those complaints seem minor compared to the unique tale that I had experienced.

It has been 11 years since the Shadow of the Colossus was released so in light of that expectations were rightfully very high. The Last Guardian, admittedly, should have been far better than Shadow of the Colossus and Ico considering how much time it took to make and how far technology has come. To be perfectly fair, it isn't better than those games but I would say it is just as good. I think the reason that it didn't get a better average score is simply because it came out too late. If it had come out three years after Shadow of the Colossus it would have been ranked as one of the best games of all time just like that game is. I was one of the people that was frustrated by the wait for this game and I still think it took way too long but playing it was like returning to a magical world that I was once kicked out of ten years ago. Once I got in a ways, I was just happy to be back.

How you feel about this game will likely depend a lot on what type of person you are. This isn't a game for everyone, it doesn't have something to satisfy every type of gamer like GTA or Zelda, it isn't a game with mass market appeal that tries to have it all. Yet for those who appreciate this type of game is a rare bit of magic that only comes around a few times in a decade.

The Scenary is AMAZING, you feel small on the giant map. It's a awesome, shocking, experience, but a little ruined by the framerate drops and a confusing camera. The game looks as good as it did in its E3 showings, so while the graphics aren't top of the line they never lied to you about it, which I appreciate a lot.
A complaint I'd levy is that there is extremely little real exploration, and what little there is is almost never rewarding. That, along side the almost auto-play of the game when riding your pet thing, makes the game feel too closed. Re-playing the game through those long bits sounds like a chore because... I mean what would I really miss?
Overall, got what I expected. The story and world were the selling points and it REALLY hit home on those points.

    Pros:
    - Wonderful art direction. This game is so full of stunning scenescapes that it's a shame there isn't an included photo mode
    - Excellent character development. The relationship between Trico and the boy is built believably and with solid pacing.
    - Perfect animations: whether it's the boy's clumsy running, Trico scratching behind his ear, or the far too realistic gait of the living armor, this game nails the animations, lending realness to every piece of this fantastic world
    - Cinematic set pieces; repeatedly felt like you were playing cut scenes at the best times
    - Trico; the beast itself is amazing to bond with. The number of times I laughed at some small action, excitedly perked up when he came to my rescue, or feared for his well being were innumerable. I truly cared for him.
    - Intriguing world
    - Good voice acting - this whole game could have gone south very quickly if the boy's voice was annoying. Thankfully it was spot on, as was the narration

    Cons:
    - Terrible camera. Had to spend far too much time fighting the stupid thing to see where I was trying to go.
    - Poor controls. Jumping, throwing and climbing all felt loose and too often unresponsive
    - Numerous low-res textures can break immersion at times

    Mixed:
    - The puzzles can be infuriatingly hard sometimes, but they almost all make sense. They just require thinking outside the box.
    - While commanding Trico is very rewarding when it works well, it can be endlessly frustrating when it doesn't.

Though flawed, The Last Guardian is a unique and emotional experience that should be undertaken. The game does an excellent job creating a real connection with the characters, and its a friendship no one should miss out on.

So the story is incredible, it might be my favorite game story of 2016, it's touching and has a few twist and turns to keep you interested. The visuals and sound are also incredible, it felt like playing an animated film most of the time.
The main characters the little boy and Trico are extremely likable and have great chemistry, people complained about Trico not responding to you when you ask him to do something...well that's kind of the point of the game, it starts of with Trico not obeying you but as the game continues, he starts to trust you and listens to you.
The puzzles were actually creative, they were well done and fun, and the gameplay was also pretty good, sometimes the little boy was stiff to control but I got quickly used to it so I considered it acceptable...

What wasn't acceptable was the freaking camera, that's what stopping this game getting a higher score because this camera was just awful, it kept getting stuck in objects and walls, it just made the entire experience less enjoyable and sometimes painful to play.

It's sad that this one little detail made this game less enjoyable to play, I'm sure it will get patched at some point, but for now it really pissed me off, the rest is amazing, it's charming likeable and touching, I would wait a price drop because it's pretty short but if you find this game for like 40 or 30 dollars, definitely pick it up, it is worth it but you should expect that your greatest enemy will be the camera.

When you are in about the middle of the game, you will see that the game is only based in "finding a way to go forward". There is no fight, no challenge. You only run from some stuff, pull some levers, tell Trico to jump and that's it.

Is The Last Guardian the legendary experience that we were all hoping it would be? No way, not even close. There are way too many things wrong with it that prevent it from shining at its brightest. I will say though that, unlike No Man’s Sky, I am wholly satisfied with the final product and feel that it was completely worth the wait.

The Last Guardian requires a particular mindset when going into the game. It is more puzzle than action, and the fantastical beast is better seen as an independent entity from yourself as the player.

No he visto nada similar en otro juego.

Stuck in almost 10 years of development hell, I never thought this game would be released. Excited to finally get my hands on it, I dove in this past week and ended up binging it all the way through.

The follow up to Shadow of Colossus and ICO has improved upon its predecessors in many ways in narration, graphics, and story. The interactions with Trico, your bird-dog friend, are incredibly believable and life-like. I've never felt such a strong attachment to a virtual animal before. They really nailed the animations and AI on Trico.

Unfortunately, it also suffers from the same glaring issue in all 3 titles: the controls. The control scheme is so incredibly awkward and frustrating at times that it can really hold the game back. If you can power through it and train your brain to it it's not so bad but it does take some patience.

Looking past the control issues, The Last Guardian is an incredibly unique game with a touching story filled with many jaw-dropping moments. It doesn't have the prettiest graphics or stable framerate but it makes up for it with life-like animations and an interesting story that starts off slow and goes out with a bang. One of the most unique games of this console generation.

    8/10

Final Verdict: Looking past the controls, it's a unique slow-burn experience that requires dedication but pays off in the end with an unbelievably life-like attachment to a pixelated animal companion.

In the end the experience, in conjunction with the audiovisual, is beautiful, however it doesn't feel as epic as Shadow of the Colossus.

It seems that Team Ico still can't develop a control and a functional camera; they are still two frustrating elements and although the game looks great, I feel that graphically is not up to the console and the year it came out, maybe because it's almost visually as it was developing for PS3.

Word to discribe the game: Unique.
Its not a masterpiece but is a very enjoyable experience, frustrating sometimes but that frustration pays off in the end.
    Everyone should try it.
However it might not be suitable for every type of gamer.

However, the controls of the camera and Trico sometimes was very infuriating as there are times where he does not move or moves backward. Also, the trophies in this game seem very tedious so there isn't a chance for a casual to ever think about getting platinum. Verdic: good game to play once and only once.

Disadvantages: not good elaboration of the main hero. Both as for graphics, as for animations and story. Quite slow gameplay. Uncomfortable control, especially camera. Uniform locations, lacking of interesting puzzles and interactive actions with Tricko.

Advantages: the main - Tricko. The best beadt a've ever seen in games. I've never seen so real and natural catsimilar beast in games.

A NEW STUBBORN PET IN THE FAMILY

    UNEXPECTED PRESENCE:
Fumito Ueda's new title, after more than 10 very long years, gladdens us with its typical game design touch; the first few seconds of the game are taken up by a very authorial cutscene, showing depictions of mythological and ancient creatures with, among them, a depiction of the monster we are going to get to know from there shortly. Most of the intro turns out to be extremely mysterious as it is left to interpretation since, once the cutscene is over, we will suddenly find ourselves inside a cave, where we will get acquainted with Trico, this giant winged creature, chained and severely injured. The initial objective of the player and the little protagonist will be to take the first steps with Trico, helping to heal him. These first sections of the game will mainly serve to explain the basic mechanics, as well as to discover the winged creature's abilities.

    FALLING DUE TO TRICO:
The gameplay of The Last Guardian is both simple and challenging. Trivially it is a puzzle game, with small combat elements and the addition of a large dynamic NPC, Trico, who , unlike the girl from ICO, Ueda's first title, will have her own artificial intelligence. The variety of possible interactions with Trico is astounding; the game is entirely built on the interaction between the protagonist and Trico, with slightly variable challenges based on the AI, optional explorable areas, and many collectibles to get.
Speaking of the puzzles, they reach the peak of the products made by Team Ico, with peculiar and situational mechanics, truly evocative areas that the player will have to pass through to continue his journey, and unpredictable and surprising events. Finally Combat comes across as rather bare and almost superfluous, being that most of the actions will be performed by the AI, and player interaction will be limited to knocking off the heads of enemies if stunned or giving nudges so as to unbalance enemies.

    PEEKING BEHIND THE MOUNTAINS:
Like every title produced by this talented Software House, the aesthetic side of The Last Guardian is impressive. The use of aesthetics, coloring, and graphics that are very different from the crowd gives the game a personal touch. The use of the gray colors of the ruins combined with the green of the vegetation, the blue of the sky and the brown of the earth makes the sight of open areas a joy to behold. The architecture of decaying buildings combined with details of contraptions evidently from another era creates a thought-provoking combo of diversity and curiosity. The animations, moreover, are really studied to perfection and look accurate and natural in every situation. The only major flaw lies in the camera, which has an annoying switch when it approaches surfaces, giving a sense of nausea and annoying flicker of the view, especially when you are on Trico's back and pass close to walls or roofs.

    PERPETUAL ECHO:
Once again this title is influenced by its predecessors, with very few OSTs and many ambient sounds. Unlike Ico, however, they do not affect the player's feelings so much and are bland. Note of credit to the invented language, usual touch of imagination and innovations of Ueda's titles.

    ACHIEVEMENTS:
The achievements will unfortunately prove very tedious if simple. They require completing the game in flawless, speedrun and getting all the collectibles. The problem is more related to the stubbornness of Trico's AI, which will often not do what it is instructed to do, greatly lengthening the hours of gameplay and wearing anyone's patience to the limit.

    BUT WHY 8?

    PROS:
Despite problems that will be discussed in the next point, The Last Guardian remains a beautiful game to experience, especially if you take it slowly, following Trico like a real animal who does not always understand orders from a human. As already mentioned the aesthetics and art design are very inspired and become enchanting at times. Finally there is a point of departure from its predecessors, namely the story, which is actually understandable and much more down-to-earth, leading to a surprise ending that can bring a smile to any player's face.

    CONS:
Starting with a problem that could vary depending on the platform, severely ruining the gaming experience, the biggest problem that I primarily had trying this video game on the first PS4 is that of immense frame rate drops, with peaks of 5 fps, which can make the 'experience truly detestable, causing headaches and turnarounds. The second major problem is that of the AI; often exaggeratedly stubborn and stupid, it makes the game extremely slow and tedious, as well as frustrating if you are facing it in flawless or speed run.
Finally, as already mentioned, the combat is uninteresting and always gives the impression of helplessness, not being able to do much of anything really.

There's really no minimum age for grasping the puzzles in this game, only for coping with the nightmarish enemies and the frustrating obtuse interactions with the AI companion. The "artistic" concept and fascinating experience do not make up for
the basic formulaic gameplay sections, and forum-discussions reveal that few have even understood what the abstract story was about. Maybe the developer just doesn't care about being understood. PROTIP: Before instructing the game's AI, there must be 1 press of the same button, to call for AI attention. Then, when the AI companion responds visibly, it can receive 1 instruction. If the button is pressed additional times, or even gets spammed or smashed (as players throw controllers in utter frustration) then the AI gets "confused" and the player will not enjoy that moment.

The game moved me and Trico not responding because lack of AI I would guess was a little charming as I've had stubborn pets. If you have some patience for it the game will be fantastic. Not counting the wonky AI in this, though.

The thing preventing the game from being a 10 or, as many have mindbogglingly called it, "a masterpiece" is that it simply isn't very fun, at least not for the vast majority of the experience, mostly the last hour or two. If you think this game is a masterpiece, you don't understand what the word "masterpiece" means. The core gameplay is light platforming and what feels like barely a handful of puzzles, and the majority suffer from the same issue as Portal 2: all there is to do is look for the one thing that you can actually do. Seriously, most puzzles are just a matter of looking for a single interaction point. Or finding an easily-accessible object and carrying it to another point. The aforementioned fun 1-2 hours of the game are enjoyable because you actually have a mixed toolset and enough variation in the environment to require that you put the pieces together on your own. There also isn't much risk or challenge in finding the right way to climb up to a single switch, so it's fun when you're thrust into a scenario with enemies constantly trying to snatch you, distract your companion, and murder him all at the same time. It's a shame that style of gameplay was such a small part of the game. The rest kind of just felt like connecting the dots between in-engine cutscene setpieces.

Even with all that I would maybe rate it higher, but it loses points because of the terrible, terrible water puzzle segments. In multiple puzzles, I tried commanding Trico to do something, he would fail, I would look up the solution online (the water puzzles are the only things I had to look up), saw that what I was doing was correct but the AI was being stupid, and then stay there for 20 minutes trying to get him to understand my command. It is very, very bad when a game is mechanically very simple, but also incredibly difficult to get results, even when you are seemingly giving the correct inputs. And in all of those cases, I finally got results randomly. There was no difference in the orders given, but he would just decide to do it that time rather than, for example, swim back up to the surface after diving halfway down or just treading water and growling.

Great music and great visuals. Story would have been better if the gameplay didn't make me so horribly frustrated with Trico. I still think Shadow of the Colossus' story was much better because it didn't constantly tear me out of the experience and make me question if the AI was glitching out and thus making things impossible. There's a lot to be said for the game maintaining the experience well enough that you can mentally remain in the world and forget you're playing a videogame with human-programmed AI. I really wish the puzzles were more involved/hands-on and less reliant on trying to order Trico around. The best segments in the game, IMO, were the ones that required very little assistance on Trico's part (like most of the segments near the end and a fairly early segment where you temporarily leave him stuck on a pillar).

I hope their next game doesn't experience the same development Hell.

I played it on PS4 Pro on 1080p and the framerate makes you really tired and I had to quit the game many time after just playing one hour.

For me, this game would achieve its goal rather by being a shorter indie-game with the same breathtaking graphics and pre-rendered moments.

It's not as good as Ico or Shadow of the Colossus game-play wise, but still a must-have on PS4!

Most of the puzzles or platforming challenges are simple when you view them. What makes this game so frustrating is the fact you have what amounts to a feathery forklift that doesn't understand you, that you MUST use to complete these puzzles. More likely than not, I would finish a particular puzzle with the phrase "Well that took longer than it should have" before realizing I will have to do another one almost immediately.
For the patient player, this is a decent title that looks good, has a bit of charm to it and a big underlying mystery. You just gotta fight with the game's own big mechanic in order to get there.
Also this is the first time I've ever considered that the camera itself is an obstacle in the puzzle solving system. Considering the character's direction depends on the placement of the camera and the camera somehow having mass that can interact with the world around it. It gets stuck on the low hanging ceilings, teleports around with a quick black fade to make me think some cut scene is starting, zooms in on the monster's feathers, the camera just sucks. Especially when it tries to frame both you and the monster at the same time. While this restrictive view does work to make the creature look enormous, it also creates this bizarre feeling of viewing the entire game with horse blinders on. I found myself moving the camera to actually see what's going on with the environment as well as what the monster is doing. If the goal was to make me feel like my TV is too small, it succeeded.
This isn't a bad game by any extent, its got a solid physics based game play, it follows its own rules of design, nothing ever felt unfair. It's good, not amazing, but good.

Let's start about the gameplay, this is like a puzzle and most of the time you have to explore by your own to keep advancing, so most of the time you have to be with a guide in your mobile. Graphics, sounds, soundtrack are all really good. Trico, the monster, although it's a mixture of many animals, looks real. Its movements, growlings, everything. But the kid looks like cartoons which it's been made on purpose but I don't quite like it. My main complaint is the puzzle style gameplay. i'm a patient person but I don't like to be around without knowing what to do. I think this game would have been better if they give you some advices or at least give you this option. If they had done that and was a little bit shorter probably would deserve an 8, maybe 8.5 but not more. To sum up, I really understand people who rate this game with a 10 and those who do it with a 0 because first of all, this is not a game for everybody. What I enjoyed more were the first 3 hours. Alex the Kidd, Gamers of the Round Table

From the makers of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus comes a new adventure from the team at JAPAN Studio. The Last Guardian, a title under development for the better part of a decade, arrives to the PS4 an entire console generation later than anticipated. The question is whether this title lives up to its long anticipated release.

    The Good

The Last Guardian is a beautiful game. The details put into Trico, the large feathered beast, clearly show the dedication that went into this project. The environment is massive in scale to both characters, and players can feel completely immersed in the world of the game. Each set piece requires the characters to work together to overcome the obstacles placed before the player; taking direct control of the young boy, players will attempt to guide Trico to progress through the game.

The bond between boy and beast develops through the player’s success, and communication improves between the two. The challenge in many parts of this game comes from communicating with Trico, and getting him to perform the tasks that need to be done. Players can feel a sense of accomplishment from achieving successful co-operation form the two characters.

    The Bad

The challenge in this game stems more from the ability to guide Trico then the actual level maps; what was made to feel like a creature that had its own attitude and intelligence can come off as a broken game mechanic at times. This is especially true when you use all the methods to guide Trico, nothing happens, then you run around the area trying to figure something out, only to have Trico jump up onto the ledge you thought he couldn’t reach in the first place. The controls to guide Trico aren’t user friendly, and can be difficult to understand exactly what it is you’re trying to get Trico to do as the camera tends to pan to Trico as you give commands.

There isn’t much to do here except move from set piece to set piece, and while they are beautiful to experience, the game can feel less engaging at the beginning. There is little plot or drive in the game beyond working with Trico, and discovering more about the area where he dwells.

    Rating

7/10 – This game isn’t for everyone, but it’s not a bad game. The Last Guardian is a well put together experience, with a few setbacks regarding Trico’s response to command. While epic in size, this isn’t the next big adventure game; Players need to try this game to decide for themselves if it’s a game they will love or not. At the end of the day, Trico is a welcome member to the PlayStation family, and The Last Guardian an overall success.

TLG is a good game. I had a great experience playing it, because it's unique and emotional.

But it wasn't a super experience due to the poor frame rate in some areas and most of the puzzles were either easy or bland.

The music score is one of the highlights of the game; a very memorable one!

Not a game for everyone but those who enjoyed ICO and SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS (references to these games will be necessary) would definitely like it. It´s a shame that it has a lot of issues regarding camera angles and controls. Those things have been a constant all over the entire playthrough. And that is exactly why it will not be remembered as a masterpiece (unlike ICO & SOTC).

Trico responses well but very slowly which it makes it sometimes a bit frustrating. However the boy´s control are just mediocre. You will also be struggling with the camera very often: bad camera angles, sudden blackouts and pointing nowhere.

It is still enjoyable but thanks to its flaws, I never thought I was playing a 10-years-development game. Music and graphics are great. And the story fulfill its objective. Those who have played ICO & SOTC will understand tt despite being not so explanatory, the plot can be very beautiful.

The bound between Trico and the Boy will not be as impressive or touching like Joel and Ellie (TLOU) but is very great indeed. We will see Trico as a companion and we will care about him.

Conclusion: A nice game but it definitely has its flaws which makes it an above-the-average game. Not an instant classic and not recommended for everyone. I would recommend anyone to play SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS, but this is not the case.

These flaws turn the game into a quite frustrating experience at some moments... Just to put a few examples: the camera handling is quite bad (especially in reduced spaces), clinging or letting go Trico's back is sometimes a pain and Trico's AI is not always working as it should... It feels like it is a real animal, but sometimes it will never react to your orders just because you are not standing exactly where you are supposed to....

One of the best things about this game is that it is very relaxing, unless the fact that Trico (our animal companion) is sometimes not cooperative will frustrate you, but that depends on the player, as I still can't tell if it's intended to work like that by the devs or is it the problem with AI, because one player can treat it as a poor AI and consider it as a drawback, the other can treat it as a feature that helps in establishing bond with your animal friend (as we all know, animals can be really not cooperative).

The one big thing that ruined the impression for me was the language, which is artificial, but the problem is that the words that we hear are very often the same, although the subtitles suggest that the whole sentence meaning is completely different.

I don't really know what to say about this game. I love playing almost all genres of games, but with this one I have problem with assigning it to one of them. The easiest way to explain The Last Guardian is probably to say that this game is about relationship between human being (player) and the accompanying him animal.

The game also looks gorgeous at times, even if it came at the price of some dreadful framerate issues throughout the game.

Fans of ICO will enjoy the puzzle-solving and story, fans of Shadow of the Colossus will enjoy climbing and controlling such a huge beast, and newcomers to the series will be drawn in by the gorgeous visuals and unique environments. Don't expect perfection, though expect the same amount of creativity and memorability that Team ICO has always been known for.

The scenario and its intriguing creatures in which we dive without knowing anything manages to arouse our curiosity and make you reflect on what lies behind this huge empty map.

Despite this, we don't have time to feel alone, Trico's presence is soon noticed and we get used to exploring the scenery with the creature, solving puzzles and eventual combats.

The game as a whole remains with the same quality as its predecessors with a good soundtrack and beautiful graphics although dated, all of this serving to place us in yet another of Fumito Ueda's Fabulas where we are experiencing a cut in time not a complete narrative.

This added to Trico's AI that can perfectly emulate a domestic animal, sometimes petting sometimes stubborn creates unique moments that are the strongest point of the game.
However this doesn't erase the somewhat dragging rhythm, repetitive puzzles and camera and gameplay failures, I recommend this game mainly for ICO Fans, for those who don't know the series or just played SOTC, wait for a slower game that hits a lot in its core mechanics but it is weak in the rest.

The Last Guardian has been on many peoples minds over the past several years of development. As someone who has been interested in the project after completing both ICO and Shadow of there Colossus, I can safely say that my expectations were met. Was it worth the near decade-long wait, maybe not so much, but nonetheless, a masterpiece in its own right.

You assume the role of a boy awoken in the midst of some vat dungeon in a pit with the great beast Trico. Throughout your journey, the two of you grow closer to each other and learn how to utilize each others strengths and weaknesses to proceed through the giant constructs. The story is all but there, focusing more on the emotional connection between player, character, and beast.

The background graphics and sceneries in this game are top-notch. Gazing into the distance nice you reach the outside world can behold some breathtaking views, even if its of the walls of the Fortress. The sprite animation leaves some to be desired, and the over animated movements can be cumbersome at times, but it does not take away from the overall playability.

A fantastic game and well worth the 11 or 12 hours to takes to complete. By now, the price has dropped to around $40 so it may be worth it to pick it up now as opposed to when it was released. Cheers for TRICO.

It is undeniable on the other hand that TLG is a masterpiece of companionship and one of the most unique games ever made. All in the usual Fumito Ueda presentation and approach to a plot that will keep you entertained well after the console is switched off.
All sums up to a great experience, with playability pitfalls that could lead you to abandon Trico. Use your patience, it is totally worth it.

Los juegos de Fumito son una delicia. Juega en otra liga. Amo a Trico.

The Last Guardian is a game I'd recommend to fans of Ico more than fans of Shadow of The Colossus, because there is nothing "epic" about this game. It's a game about a boy bonding with a beast 5 times his size, and it delivers in this regard. Don't go in expecting perfection, but do expect a Team Ico game. It's genuinely charming, heartwarming, and a good game overall.

Yeah...about that much time. Shadow of the Colossus was the game that had me anticipating the next game from team Ico. I did get around to playing Ico once the remastered version came to the PS3. I can appreciate a bleak, silent narrative and had an idea of what to expect going into The Last Guardian...a story told mostly through silence and a lonely journey towards some unhappy ending. For the most part I got that, but not without suffering through some of the most frustrating controls and camera behavior in my entire gaming history. (I am "old" by the way and have played games for many years.) The kid in this game is nice to look at animation-wise, but that comes at the cost of any type of sharpness when turning corners, dodging, jumping, swimming, climbing, or feeding barrels of who-the-hell-knows-what to your "pal" Trico. The controls are the main enemy in this game...nevermind the usual team Ico weird villians. We don't get shadow men or giants this time....simply stone statue men who chase the boy and try to carry you into doors to oblivion. Evading those guys was hell on earth. Running is terribly clunky and the boy will fall on his face half the time. You also have a dive move but the boy will jump and slam right into the wall (there are many tight corridors in the game) or into the stone guys and also face-plant over and over again. It was so frustrating trying to run away from those idiots over and over again while running back to a giant chain that I had to pull to open huge gates to get Trico inside the room just so he could smash them eventually. And after he does smash them he jumps around like he has rabies until you can sloppily climb on his back and give him a massage while attempting to pull spears from his body that the stone men toss into him. Trico is AI controlled and is pretty competent for the most part. He does tend to ignore your commands from time to time. There are lost of sections where he does most of the platforming for you, giving you a break from the sloppy controls. The game does a pretty bad job of telling you where to go next or what to look for if you don't pay attention to very small hints such as Trico investigating something or looking at a certain area. When Trico isn't around, things are even more ambiguous. You just may find yourself stuck for long periods of time before resorting to looking up guides on the internet. The bond the developers were going for between the boy and Trico never materialized with me because I was too buy trying to do simple things like climb Trico's body when I needed to with some sense of direction or getting him to respond to basic commands in the most simple sections. I was so tired of trying to fight the controls and get Trico to do what I wanted him to do that by the end I didn't care what happened to either one of the characters. And I was one of the players who didn't have that horrible a time figuring out what the game wanted of me. I caught on to all the commands and saw that Trico was basically pointing me in the right directions throughout the journey. The game isn't very long if you know what to do and where to go and there is no reason to play through it again after seeing the ending. It was just a very mediocre experience to me. The animation was great, the movement and feathers flowing in the wind was constantly pleasant to look at, the game was just never fun to play at any point...and in the end, that is what a video game is supposed to be...no matter how artistic the vision. I can only recommend this as a rental. I was hugely disappointed...even the ending was bland and not worth the trouble I went through to see it. I played this on the PS4 Pro I got it for 39.99. Anyone who paid 60 dollars for this was robbed. Expand

I suppose the change of heart is happening somewhere with the emotion this game captures, but for the most part I really can't understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Team Ico has always done a good job of making me feel lost in video games again, a feeling from my childhood. The Last Guardian is another world to find yourself lost in, but it doesn't come without its ugly bumps, bruises, and cuts.

Team Ico games have always had significant flaws, Shadow of the Colossus had some of the worst controller input lag I have ever experienced in a game, once paired with your horse the issue gets even worse. Just like SoTC, The Last Guardian has a wonderful idea, an amazing landscape and environment, and wonderful puzzles. For The Last Guardian, the issue is the difficult to work with AI. Despite only needing a very few amount of inputs per puzzle room is among the most annoying issues. I suppose this comes with the territory, which honestly at this point I'm starting to question. The swimming controls in The Last Guardian are to the Horseback controls in SoTC, both very raw and unrefined setups.

Similarly, both games SoTC and The Last Guardian also suffer from low framerates and framerate spikes. For SoTC this made the controller input lag much worse, The Last Guardian suffers some from it, but definitely not nearly as bad as SoTC. The PS4 pro will help you a little in this regard, but you're still going to suffer from these issues.

There is more that could be said about the game, but at this point the effort seems fruitless. You will either love it or you will hate it, if you have followed the series it's going to have a nostalgic feel for you. If you are a newcomer I suppose its a toss up. I can't recommend this game, but I also cannot condemn it. I rated it a 6 because I feel like it has everything necessary to be considered a game. It does however, need a lot of quality time spent on refinement to be great. At this point I feel like Team Ico are master world-builders, and definitely know how to capture emotion and tell a story. But perhaps they should leave everything else up to another team that could set a standard for gameplay mechanics appropriate for this decade.

Yet, and perhaps more importantly, as an adventure, it is unique, memorable, and enchanting. The dreamworld visuals are truly awe inspiring, the animations are some of the greatest and most expressive I have yet to see, and the physics impress.

The unscripted, procedural nature of your interaction with the guardian is remarkably successful, and as piece of gaming concept, it is the most refreshing, and intelligent leverage of the video-game medium I have had the pleasure to experience in a long long time - Indeed, your interaction with the guardian seamlessly serve both the story and game-play needs. At no point have I felt I was dealing with an AI, but rather a genuine living creature - This achievement alone must be celebrated.

TLG is not a very good game then, but it offers something novel to experience. and will leave you with a cherished memory of your time with it. Play it.

Second - the beast will NOT listen, become trapped in AI routines, get stuck against corners making it ignore your orders practically forever. After 7 years in what seems to be development hell, Team Ico finally introduces us to the majestic Trico and its heartfelt relationship with a young protagonist. While the long development cycle does show its age in certain parts up to a point of some frustration. The experience as a whole is one of the most unique ever.

The Last Guardian doesn't just live up to its forebears' legacy, it goes further. Despite the callbacks to Fumito Ueda's previous works, it is a unique creation. Outside of indie experiments, we don't get to say that about modern videogames often enough.
