I love the atmosphere (clearly set in the same world as ico and sotc), but most of all the story. Real, emotional, loving. I haven't cared for game characters as much as this ever before.

Some call the graphics outdated. I'm glad they are the way they are. Ico nostalgia. The animations and lighting can be spectacular. The camera is very bad at times, but it doesn't distract from the great game and story.

This is divided into two categories - one, if the boy climbs the beast, the camera takes a hike and everything breaks. Second - the beast will NOT listen, become trapped in AI routines, get stuck against corners making it ignore your orders practically forever. You're supposed to like the beast and while I admittedly did, I liked the beast the story was selling me, not the game was providing me with. Trico is broken Camera is broken. AI is broken. Controls are delayed and floaty.
I don't hate this game. But I really don't love it at all.

Trico's AI is responsive and revolutionary, as is the unbelievable amount of work that has gone into all of his detailed animations and his pathfinding in levels. Trico is an incredible combination of interactivity and subtle body language, like no character in gaming has been before. Trico will help the player through puzzles as much as the player will help him, whether it be through his vocalisations, his positioning, or his head movements. The Last Guardian is a masterclass in level design, with a scale rarely seen in games. In combination with high-stakes platforming, it makes for a nail biting experience. The weaknesses that TLG has are the camera (which doesn't need to be moved as much, and can be improved by raising the sensitivity to 100%) and that there is a great deal of depth to the interactions with Trico that may be missed by players. Unfortunately, even basic interactions seem to have been lost on a lot of players, which could be alleviated with the addition of a unsubtle tutorial. TLG is a once in a generation experience, with one of the most memorable endings in gaming history. Like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus before it, it will be influencing both developers and players for generations to come. Like with Ico moving from the PS1 to the PS2, The Last Guardian was also technologically ahead of its time. I can't wait to see what Ueda and genDesign create next. Expand

A paragon of emotional and mystical storytelling regardless of medium and genre and he should recieve a nobel prize for animation, for they have gone above and beyond the currently percievable paradigm. I cried and cried and cried...i can't remember the last time i felt this connected to any world or character, again regardless of medium. It's a work of art simply because of the sheer beauty of the entire experience. There's nothing quite like The Last Guardian in terms of its braveness to convey a story so simple and yet so effective. This is a game that will quickly let you know it's going to be an emotional journey and does not try to hide it. And at the end of it all, you get just that--a simple and honest, emotionally charged reward of an ending.

Never before have I felt so connected to a game's characters since The Last Guardian, and my hope is that you, the readers, become brave enough to look past its shortcomings and unravel for yourselves the bond between a boy and his Last Guardian!

If your priority is technical like anti aliasing, frame rates etc you may not appreciate this. But very few games have made me FEEL something. I find the art direction in the environments, the spectacular lighting and Trico's hypnotizing feathers make this one of the most atmospheric games ive played in a long time. It FEELS like a real place, and the story and music have stuck with me for days now. In my imagination i like to think Team Ico has found the secret to tapping into other worlds somehow and telling us a slice of their stories.

I really think this is one of those games that is about the experience and the artistry, the passion behind it and the depth of your bond with Trico. It's far more than the sum of its parts. I can understand how it's not for everyone, but if it is for you I think you will absolutely love it:)

My only complaints would be the camera, which can be a bit unruly in tight spaces, and the framerate which dips into the 20s in certain locations (especially ones with water). I hope this can be resolved with optimization patches in the future, but I do not think it takes away from the experience, as the framerate and camera issues fade away and become forgotten after a few minutes. The Last Guardian has been the biggest disappointment of the gaming year, for this SOTC lover and has taught me a valuable lesson I should have learned long ago: DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!
Having played SOTC (Shadow of the Colossus being one of the most revered gaming titles in existence, and a personnel favourite of mine-easily taking 3rd prize in my most beloved games of all time) when I was younger on the PS2, I was very stoked for the release of Team Ico's next new IP when it was announced in 2008. But now, having laying my hands upon the final product, I feel nothing but regret for my purchase decision and a sense of remorse for the missed potential of this game.
Firstly, let's list the glaring issues of The Last Guardian. The most unforgivable flaw of this game is the very thing that was that was the primary focus of the marketing campaigns: The relationship between the boy and the colossal bird-mammal hybrid, Trico. This boils down into several factors, the most predominant being Trico's AI; the majority excusing this for natural animal behaviour, which I would dispute, as the major initiative of any game development team is to prioritise gameplay that elicits a sense of enjoyment and engagement from the player (whilst realism is subjectively important, to certain games, it should always take a backseat to gameplay). To substantiate, Trico will not always obey your commands, which would be perfectly acceptable if it was done in moderation, but it instead becomes a severe contributor to the overall tedium of the game which is further compounded by the need to constantly feed the creature and also have to calm him down after every combat encounter (which whilst nuanced and endearing at first, loses its effect further into the game).
Moving on, the level design and puzzles of the game feel highly derivative and uninspired for the most part. Whilst, admittedly, the art direction and visuals of the game are utterly breath taking when they want to be, most of the levels of The Last Guardian feel very generic and really blur together due to their similarity, in addition to seemingly being suspiciously reminiscent of the world design in Team Ico's first title Ico. In terms of puzzles, their solutions are often times incredibly simple, reducing The Last Guardian's gameplay to boring and repetitive hunts to find where Trico can jump up to or down from different points in the environment or to search and destroy stain glass eyes. A closing note concerning artistic choices of the game developers: the game is overly cinematic (not in the sense of cut-scenes) which I found to be quite jarring and disruptive of the pacing of the game, in addition to severely overdoing certain "emotionally" evocative tropes (i.e. I lost count of how many times Trico saved the protagonist's life, but it must have been more than ten!).
Finally (props if you've made it this far) the meagre longevity of the game will be a major deterrent for most prospective buyers. Overall, I spent 6 hours slogging through The Last Guardian's unfulfilling and unengaging plotline and have not even looked at the game since. The Last Guardian's lack of any real replay value (an element which was not overlooked in SOTC with it's hard mode and time trials mode-for both normal and hard difficulties, totalling at a minimum of 4 playthroughs-which overall acted to enrich the experience) really cripples it in the long term.
And as a final, final note: the controls and camera in The Last Guardian are borderline infuriatingly broken, ranging from inputs being either misinterpreted or multiplied by 10 (when you want to carefully walk around an edge, the game will sometimes propel you off said edge in a full throttle sprint) to the fact that there is no dedicated 'grab' button (a staple of the series) instead having to rely upon an 'auto-grab' feature which was very unreliable at the times in which I needed it the most-usually resulting in the boy plummeting to his death.
In conclusion, as you are no doubt aware of my begrudging animosity towards this game, I would strongly recommend you steer clear of this game, at least for now (the £50 price-tag isn't worth the 5-10 hours of gameplay you can squeeze out of this PS4 exclusive). Overall I cannot assert my disappointment for this game I (and a whole host of many others) have waited for, for 8 years of which a tumultuous development cycle has clearly taken its toll on such a renown and respected development team-for which I would partly blame Sony for. I know this game has been met with mostly positive reviews, but it has not been the recipient of critical acclaim across the board. I sincerely hope the voices of those with an opinion akin to that of mine own are not drowned out and are listened to by the developers, because I know Team Ico are undeniably passionate about their products and their fan base, and I know they have in them the capacity to produce utter masterpieces and works of ART.

Tiene sus errores como los gráficos que no son punteros y bajada de fps, pero toda la magia que desprende eclipsa todo lo demás.

However, instead of protect someone through the entire game, now you're the one who needs to be protect by your partner, which is some kind of gigantic winged dog called Trico. He's an adorable and very charismatic creature by the way. The objective is to escape from a fortress inside a crater and Trico's big size and strength will be necessary to overcome puzzles and obstacles, and also to defeat enemies (the boy can't defeat them all by himself). But to command his actions is not that simple. He's an animal after all and to make him execute one task you will need to repeat gestures and commands a lot do make Trico figure what you want him to do. Also, he gets hungry sometimes and we'll refuse to work if you don't bring food.

I see what developers tried to do, make him look and feel like a real animal. For most of time it works very well, but now and then Trico will test your patient. He gets distracted very often and sometimes we'll do what he wants to do. You'll need to constantly ask for his attention to execute every task and i can some people getting annoyed by this, specially during one particular sequence where Trico needs to dive. It's the most frustrating bit of the game by far and will probably get a lot of tries and swearing to beat this part. Honestly, i still can't say what i did wrong.

Also, the controls are not perfectly responsive, specially when i was trying to drop from Trico's body. The boy keeps getting stick on his feathers and the camera gets crazy. Jumping from a rope or chain to a platform is also very imprecise.

However, all the struggle to command Trico and constant fighting with the controls and camera are absolutely worth. The game is beautiful, fun, fresh and the friendship between the boy you play and the beast is very nice to watch and has a lot of touching moments.

I would say though that if you like Ico and SotC you should probably try The Last Guardian. The Last Guardian to me was a great idea that didn't quite pan out. To be honest it really feels like a ps2 game. It is definitely very beautiful in it's own way but I feel it suffers from a lot of problems ps2 games had back in the day that have by now been improved upon and almost perfected like the camera, or hit detection etc. The camera is the absolute WORST when in tight spaces. Granted, once the game opens up a bit it's not quite as bad, but when it is bad it is super frustrating. My other problem is Trico (the bird dog). Sometimes you will ask Trico to do something and 60% of the time he will either just stare at you like an idiot or do the exact opposite. I understand that Team Ico wanted to make the relationship a bit more complex by giving Trico a mind of his own, and setting a sort of "language barrier", but in my humble opinion that is NOT fun. I got to a environmental puzzle where I thought I had to get Trico to jump up to a small platform and I kept telling him to jump SEVERAL times and he just wouldn't do it. Then I started to think that maybe that was not where I was supposed to go so I spent a little over 30 minutes trying to find the way to go. When I couldn't find anywhere else to go besides up, so I go back to the same EXACT spot I tried before and tell Trico to jump one more time and he does it immediately! WTF!? That and the completely absurd camera made this game so frustrating to the point where I almost didn't even finish it, but my friends kept telling me the ending is worth the frustration. Well, I just finished it and I gotta say it's really good. The whole story is really good! It is just a shame that my frustrations with the game totally erase any motivation to ever play it again. Although I have the utmost respect for both Team Ico and their fans I just can't give The Last Guardian anything higher than a 5. Like I said the story is definitely worth a play through but with all of the ps2 era problems that have for the most part been fixed by now The Last Guardian should be bought at a very steep discount. Alex the Kidd, Gamers of the Round Table

From the makers of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus comes a new adventure from the team at JAPAN Studio. The Last Guardian, a title under development for the better part of a decade, arrives to the PS4 an entire console generation later than anticipated. The question is whether this title lives up to its long anticipated release.

    The Good

The Last Guardian is a beautiful game. The details put into Trico, the large feathered beast, clearly show the dedication that went into this project. The environment is massive in scale to both characters, and players can feel completely immersed in the world of the game. Each set piece requires the characters to work together to overcome the obstacles placed before the player; taking direct control of the young boy, players will attempt to guide Trico to progress through the game.

The bond between boy and beast develops through the player’s success, and communication improves between the two. The challenge in many parts of this game comes from communicating with Trico, and getting him to perform the tasks that need to be done. Players can feel a sense of accomplishment from achieving successful co-operation form the two characters.

    The Bad

The challenge in this game stems more from the ability to guide Trico then the actual level maps; what was made to feel like a creature that had its own attitude and intelligence can come off as a broken game mechanic at times. This is especially true when you use all the methods to guide Trico, nothing happens, then you run around the area trying to figure something out, only to have Trico jump up onto the ledge you thought he couldn’t reach in the first place. The controls to guide Trico aren’t user friendly, and can be difficult to understand exactly what it is you’re trying to get Trico to do as the camera tends to pan to Trico as you give commands.

There isn’t much to do here except move from set piece to set piece, and while they are beautiful to experience, the game can feel less engaging at the beginning. There is little plot or drive in the game beyond working with Trico, and discovering more about the area where he dwells.

    Rating

7/10 – This game isn’t for everyone, but it’s not a bad game. The Last Guardian is a well put together experience, with a few setbacks regarding Trico’s response to command. While epic in size, this isn’t the next big adventure game; Players need to try this game to decide for themselves if it’s a game they will love or not. At the end of the day, Trico is a welcome member to the PlayStation family, and The Last Guardian an overall success.

The worst controls in recent gaming memory. Frustrating A.I. on which you are forced to rely. Trial and error gameplay and puzzle design. Physics that can mess up preventing you going further in some cases or killing you. Poor level design in which numerous things look like ledges but aren't. Choppy framerate. Very poor camera.

As a huge Shadow of the Colossus fan, I knew what to expect in terms of art style and game mechanics. This really does feel like an instant classic like the other team ICO games. The dungeon-esque puzzle sections are broken up with jaw dropping vistas and heart stopping moments, and after a few hours, you really start to feel a part of the world of team ICO. My ONLY complaint is that the framerate does dip in certain scenes, but after playing for five minutes, I am too immersed to even notice.

I can only name two weaknesses of this game: controls and camera. Controls are cumbersome and at rare times nearly drive you mad. The camera acts in unexpected ways from time to time and in certain conditions it may be irritating (for example, on the back of Trico in very small room).

The Last Guardian fortunately has a lot of advantages. The story and narration are interesting and the game is full of surprises and twists you won't expect. The bond you create with main characters is unheard of and keeps you thinking about the game after you finish it. Trico is convincing and you really care for him.

Level design is just amazing - nearly everything you see is a place you'll eventually visit later on. The route you should take is not always obvious but it gives a feeling of satisfaction once you figure it out. Soundtrack is stunning and compliments the game perfectly, just as the animations and cutscenes.

It's also worth mentioning that this game is quite difficult. Some puzzles are not so obvious and take a few minutes to figure out. You also don't give commands to Trico but rather give it hints. It's an AI and it doesn't always understand what you want just like animal would in real life. If you pet it and give clear clues, it will do what you wish. Later on you get used to that and giving commands to Trico becomes very easy.

It took me about 11-12h to finish The Last Guardian. I have to say that it had only quality content and no filler. The ending was truly satisfying - just wait for credits to roll, the real ending is after them. It certainly isn't a game for impatient or action-oriented players. It's about immersing yourself and caring about lead characters. I will certainly replay it many times.

I think that game should score about 8/10 just because of controls and camera. However I loved it so much and think about it a lot after playing it, I give it 9/10. It was fantastic experience.

While the game has a nice concept and does minimalism well, it's the same minimalism that hurts it. The game suffers from a few big issues that negatively affect it as a whole product The controls, camera, AI and gameplay are all lacking. On the plus side, it has a relatively solid concept that is a little flawed and a great soundtrack and art design.

The biggest issue the game has is a mixed feeling towards gameplay, AI and control. Control feels like it's taken a huge step back from SOTC and the autogrip mechanic is by far the worst thing I've seen in a game in the last 5 years.
Gameplay is beyond non existant to incredibly repetitive. You make your way through rooms to reach the end goal fetching food for your companion, destroying obstacles or pulling levers. It has a few really low points involving physics based puzzles that really hurt the pace of the game. Speaking of pace, this is why I felt I had to give the game such a low score. Trico's AI is based around sometimes disobeying orders which is a neat gimmick, but is one that will lead to some frustration and a lot of wasted time. I had issues with the AI being so broken that I needed to restart the game to progress past some points. I can see this harming the replayability greatly for me as I didn't find the game challenging and it felt much more like a slow guided tour.

It feels as though the concept has not been fully realised and that while it has a nice story, great art design and soundtrack it is entirely lacking simply because of the medium it is presented in. I've played lots of great bargain bin flops that I feel the same way about as The Last Guardian.

While the game has it's good points, the negatives weigh it down so much that it can be really tough to make it through to the end. You'll see 10/10's around but it's hard to give a game a perfect score when it has imperfections. For a game that has taken so long from inception to release, certain aspects feel wholly unfinished and seem to clash entirely with the games concept.

Not counting the wonky AI in this, though.

The thing preventing the game from being a 10 or, as many have mindbogglingly called it, "a masterpiece" is that it simply isn't very fun, at least not for the vast majority of the experience, mostly the last hour or two. If you think this game is a masterpiece, you don't understand what the word "masterpiece" means. The core gameplay is light platforming and what feels like barely a handful of puzzles, and the majority suffer from the same issue as Portal 2: all there is to do is look for the one thing that you can actually do. Seriously, most puzzles are just a matter of looking for a single interaction point. Or finding an easily-accessible object and carrying it to another point. The aforementioned fun 1-2 hours of the game are enjoyable because you actually have a mixed toolset and enough variation in the environment to require that you put the pieces together on your own. There also isn't much risk or challenge in finding the right way to climb up to a single switch, so it's fun when you're thrust into a scenario with enemies constantly trying to snatch you, distract your companion, and murder him all at the same time. It's a shame that style of gameplay was such a small part of the game. The rest kind of just felt like connecting the dots between in-engine cutscene setpieces.

Even with all that I would maybe rate it higher, but it loses points because of the terrible, terrible water puzzle segments. In multiple puzzles, I tried commanding Trico to do something, he would fail, I would look up the solution online (the water puzzles are the only things I had to look up), saw that what I was doing was correct but the AI was being stupid, and then stay there for 20 minutes trying to get him to understand my command. It is very, very bad when a game is mechanically very simple, but also incredibly difficult to get results, even when you are seemingly giving the correct inputs. And in all of those cases, I finally got results randomly. There was no difference in the orders given, but he would just decide to do it that time rather than, for example, swim back up to the surface after diving halfway down or just treading water and growling.

Great music and great visuals. Story would have been better if the gameplay didn't make me so horribly frustrated with Trico. I still think Shadow of the Colossus' story was much better because it didn't constantly tear me out of the experience and make me question if the AI was glitching out and thus making things impossible. There's a lot to be said for the game maintaining the experience well enough that you can mentally remain in the world and forget you're playing a videogame with human-programmed AI. I really wish the puzzles were more involved/hands-on and less reliant on trying to order Trico around. The best segments in the game, IMO, were the ones that required very little assistance on Trico's part (like most of the segments near the end and a fairly early segment where you temporarily leave him stuck on a pillar).

I hope their next game doesn't experience the same development Hell.

The game looks as good as it did in its E3 showings, so while the graphics aren't top of the line they never lied to you about it, which I appreciate a lot.
A complaint I'd levy is that there is extremely little real exploration, and what little there is is almost never rewarding. That, along side the almost auto-play of the game when riding your pet thing, makes the game feel too closed. Re-playing the game through those long bits sounds like a chore because... I mean what would I really miss?
Overall, got what I expected. The story and world were the selling points and it REALLY hit home on those points.

It is a journey through a mysterious world that keeps you on your feet, and it will put you on a roller coaster of emotions throughout the game. It's a game that is masterfully crafted, I cannot believe how happy I was there was little to no story, a mostly empty world, and every obstacle that needed two things, you and trico. The puzzles were basic but always required you and trico to work together. Everything in the game immersed you into believing you needed each other, and watching the relationship grow from growling to whimpering when you jump off high ledges is a magical thing. The variety of obstacles and pacing of story was amazing, I can't tell you how many times I genuinely smiled throughout the game, because of either how surprised at the variety of gameplay I was, or how far me and trico had come since the start. The fact Trico is also the most life like A.I companion at such grand of an scale is great, it made me believe I had to earn it's trust. The best comparison I can give this game is telltale's walking dead season 1, but this one is miles better because of actual gameplay/puzzles and unpredictability of an non-human companion. The only downfall of this game is the technical issues (framerate and camera issues), but it really isn't that bad, the framerate got really bad at times sporadically, but it really is a non-factor to my enjoyment of the game. A lot of critics also hate the camera, I can say it really isn't that bad; camera gave me problems in tight spaces, but I had no camera problems during actual puzzle solving or important parts of the game. To end, masterfully crafted, beautifully told story and journey with you and the beast trico, one of the most memorable game experiences I've had. This is a game I recommend everyone try at least once. The level of enjoyment you get will depend on the level of immersion you get in this game's world. (which isn't that what gaming is for?) Expand

Yeah, it stutters a bit, but mostly when Trico jumps, which is basically like a cutscene. The camera is fine during platforming and combat. The graphics are nice. These are not PS2 and PS3 graphics people. Look at how huge the landscape is. Look at the fancy particle effects. Look at how lifelike Trico is. Those things take resources.
The gameplay is a lot like Ico, and a bit like Shadow of the Colossus. If you haven't played those, you should try to if you can. The gameplay is also a lot like the Tomb Raider games from the 2000s, minus the guns. It is like God of War minus the hack and slash combat. It is like a 3D version of Limbo or Inside.
I absolutely hate shooting games, but I gave The Last of Us a try because I like good stories and characters. If you feel the same way about puzzle/platformers, maybe you should give it a try.
If I didn't already own a PS4 I would have bought one just to play this game and I would not be disappointed. Trico is absolutely amazing. If he doesn't do what you want after a few levels/areas, you probably aren't giving him the right commands. Or maybe you need to feed him more.
This might not be a game for everybody, but it is a classic, and you should really keep an open mind and give it a try.

And at the end i still don't know why the kids and others were brought there, and why is it called the last guardian? who is the last guardian? guarding what exactly?
2- The game controls was just awful that requires much mashing! and pointless mashing in fact,

You can throw the barrels but you cant put it on box? or on a cliff go up and then rise it from there? it was like it deliberately messing with you !

Most of the puzzles or platforming challenges are simple when you view them. What makes this game so frustrating is the fact you have what amounts to a feathery forklift that doesn't understand you, that you MUST use to complete these puzzles. More likely than not, I would finish a particular puzzle with the phrase "Well that took longer than it should have" before realizing I will have to do another one almost immediately.
For the patient player, this is a decent title that looks good, has a bit of charm to it and a big underlying mystery. You just gotta fight with the game's own big mechanic in order to get there.
Also this is the first time I've ever considered that the camera itself is an obstacle in the puzzle solving system. Considering the character's direction depends on the placement of the camera and the camera somehow having mass that can interact with the world around it. It gets stuck on the low hanging ceilings, teleports around with a quick black fade to make me think some cut scene is starting, zooms in on the monster's feathers, the camera just sucks. Especially when it tries to frame both you and the monster at the same time. While this restrictive view does work to make the creature look enormous, it also creates this bizarre feeling of viewing the entire game with horse blinders on. I found myself moving the camera to actually see what's going on with the environment as well as what the monster is doing. If the goal was to make me feel like my TV is too small, it succeeded.
This isn't a bad game by any extent, its got a solid physics based game play, it follows its own rules of design, nothing ever felt unfair. It's good, not amazing, but good.

    Worth The Wait...
It’s been 9 years since this game was announced… And while this time wasn’t spent on polishing mechanics... it was spent on delivering a beautiful experience…
The Last Guardian is insanely frustrating to play through… but it’s so worth it...
    This game is absolutely gorgeous...
In the Last Guardian you play as a boy who wakes up at the bottom of a pit along side these beast of a creature known as a trico…
Intrigued by the injured beast you decide to help him by removing arrows, taking off his collar, and feeding him…
This creates the initially bond between the two…
And Trico feels like a living breathing animal, so much so his way of interacting with item and you is guaranteed to make you smile, unless you have no heart…
Hes one giant cuddly bird dog
This is of course from the same team that made ico and the shadow of the colossus.. As you can instantly tell and feel...
This game is very much a mix of the 2 with more emphasis on the ico side...
It’s very puzzle heavy... but thankfully in a much more casual way than ico…
This is more about finding alternate routes than it is putting items in the right spots…
The puzzle solving itself isn’t the frustrating part..
It’s one thing to figure it out... it’s another to actually execute it…
It’s a little tough dealing with the platforming as it feels very dated and has verticality issues modern days have polished up these past 9 years like the backwards wall jump…
But the real frustrations comes in with giving commands to Trico
I spent 12 hours with this game to beat it and I still don’t understand how to command Trico..
The game tells you to hold R1 while you move, but it also tells you to hold r1 and press any of the 4 action buttons... but it never really tells you what each do other than triangle…
Leading me to frustratingly button mash to get Trico to go to or do what I want him to…
And this is nonstop as its necessary to use Trico to jump to higher locations or reach a hole in the wall..
And again... these puzzles aren’t necessarily brain teasers…
I would’ve preferred Trico acting on his own automatically when I would climb on top of him or stand near a progress point than me giving the command…
It would’ve completely killed the frustration without hurting the experience of the game…
It’s so hard to tell if it’s time to get off and explore to progress or if Trico just isn’t going forward when he should most of the time… Had Trico been more on rails, the game would’ve moved along more smoothly
As you are exploring these locations... there are threats
There are these suits of armor characters that try to kidnap you…
Trico will always come to your rescue when he can, but there are a few annoying spots where you have to outsmart them to bet to a certain item or switch.. Which in the moment feels very stressful, but looking back I can appreciate them all… These moments you’re alone feel tense and horrifying…
IF Trico does help you, there’s a large chance he’ll get injured…
He can’t die from combat but after a fight you will more than likely have to pull arrows out of him, feed him with barrels around when he gets hungry, and pet him to calm him down…
It really creates a caring and loving bond between you 2, stopping him from ever feeling like he’s just there..
You need him to get home and he needs you to get out.
So while yes… this bird dogs is going to frustrate you at times, you can’t help but love him the entire way…
This is a beautiful story about the bond between man and beast and is a must play.
    I give the Last Guardian

I suppose the change of heart is happening somewhere with the emotion this game captures, but for the most part I really can't understand the overwhelmingly positive reviews. Team Ico has always done a good job of making me feel lost in video games again, a feeling from my childhood. The Last Guardian is another world to find yourself lost in, but it doesn't come without its ugly bumps, bruises, and cuts.

Team Ico games have always had significant flaws, Shadow of the Colossus had some of the worst controller input lag I have ever experienced in a game, once paired with your horse the issue gets even worse. Just like SoTC, The Last Guardian has a wonderful idea, an amazing landscape and environment, and wonderful puzzles. For The Last Guardian, the issue is the difficult to work with AI. Despite only needing a very few amount of inputs per puzzle room is among the most annoying issues. I suppose this comes with the territory, which honestly at this point I'm starting to question. The swimming controls in The Last Guardian are to the Horseback controls in SoTC, both very raw and unrefined setups.

Similarly, both games SoTC and The Last Guardian also suffer from low framerates and framerate spikes. For SoTC this made the controller input lag much worse, The Last Guardian suffers some from it, but definitely not nearly as bad as SoTC. The PS4 pro will help you a little in this regard, but you're still going to suffer from these issues.

There is more that could be said about the game, but at this point the effort seems fruitless. You will either love it or you will hate it, if you have followed the series it's going to have a nostalgic feel for you. If you are a newcomer I suppose its a toss up. I can't recommend this game, but I also cannot condemn it. I rated it a 6 because I feel like it has everything necessary to be considered a game. It does however, need a lot of quality time spent on refinement to be great. At this point I feel like Team Ico are master world-builders, and definitely know how to capture emotion and tell a story. But perhaps they should leave everything else up to another team that could set a standard for gameplay mechanics appropriate for this decade.

But ultimately, the controls are completely broken and the AI is patchy at best. And when you consider this is a game which has to rely on tight controls and solid AI to be a success, the fact both are the weakest points of the title renders the whole thing dead on arrival. It is mechanically not fit for purpose.

Look, this will get high scores from those who are charmed head over heels by Trico (stunningly cute by the way), as well as the art style, to an extent the story and, let's be honest, the hype this game has received for years and years - but they're not scoring it high because it's a good actual game. It is borderline unplayable for large parts of the experience; you will fall off ledges, fail to interact with Trico, wait around for minutes for the AI to react to what you want to do... these really are deal breakers. Read the positive reviews on here - not one will realistically praise the game as a game; instead, they'll bang on about story and so on.

But I'm reviewing a game. This isn't a good game. And it's a crying shame, as they did the hard work and completely ballsed up the basics.

Oh, and for those who excuse Trico's AI because he's a dog and "dogs don't always listen in real life"... that's an unbelievably dumb argument, because we're talking about a video game, NOT real life. It has to work as a video game first and foremost. I can yell at a hedgehog in real life and it won't turn blue and run fast, and that's obvious as you wouldn't compare Sonic the Hedgehog to an actual damn hedgehog! Stop making excuses for broken AI.

A design decision was made here that gives you a strikingly lively creature that made all the emotion possible.

"Lively" is actually an understatement. I've never played a game where every part of a character reacts to the environment/ random elements so perfectly, nor I've played a game where a main character moves so smoothly between EVERY SINGLE animation, while having an epic amount of them. There isn't any dominant Idle positions, and the loop point of the animation transitions are so often unrecognizable.

Mechanic-wise the solutions to the puzzles are just subtle enough which is great, and it is masterful in not giving you the expected (aka boring) outcome for a lot of events.

I really wouldn't recommend this game. The number of cons far outweigh the pros.

I really wouldn't recommend this game. The number of cons far outweigh the pros.

I liked Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, the other games in this franchise. They may not necessarily be considered direct sequels, they have a similar kind of style and clearly influenced one another, including the development of this title.

The first and major issue is this game's framerate. I played this game on the original PS4 that was released. I notice that as soon as I go outside any building, my framerate drops significantly, from 30 FPS to 10-20 FPS. This happens very frequently since the majority of the game takes place outside. This game has worse framerate problems than Drakengard 3.

I have friends who are playing this game on the PS4 Pro, and they still experience significant framerate drops as well. This is unacceptable for a video game released in 2016. It's clear that this game was poorly optimized. I would've given it a pass if it was a poorly released port, but unfortunately this title is only available on one console. I'm not going to purchase an upgraded version of the console for a single game. There should've been standards for when this game was release and I will hold Sony personally accountable for allowing this game to be published on their console ts current state.

Perhaps a patch will be created later to combat these framerate issues, but I'm afraid that I'm reviewing the game when it was released, December 6, and in its current state the game is almost unplayable. The framerate might not be a problem for other video game genres, but for a platformer which relies exclusively on careful and precise button inputs this is unacceptable.

This game also forces you to mash buttons a lot, which is unexpected. When you are grabbed by an enemy, which is pretty much the only combat move that most enemies have, you need to mash many buttons to escape. There is no difficulty option to change this. For older folks or people who have had problems with their wrist in the past, this makes gameplay exceedingly difficult.

My hands hurt after playing this title and it's really unfair that they're allowed to discriminate against a class of video game players like this. It's not even a simple button mash like God of War or Resident Evil 4 - you need to mash all of the face buttons maybe several dozen times within a few seconds, or else your character dies. Granted, the checkpoints are usually generous - but it's a shame that I have to force my character to die because of a very poorly implemented gameplay mechanic.

The worst part is that after your character dies, you, once again, need to mash more buttons to reload your checkpoint. I wouldn't mind if it were a couple of buttons, but it's hundreds of button presses within a couple of seconds. I've played many fighting games and beat-em-up games that had nowhere near this game's level of button-mashing. It's a crying shame.

In terms of gameplay, you and a beast roam different environments and solve puzzles. The problem is that it's extremely hard to control the beast. You're given many different kinds of button inputs you can use to try to make the beast take different actions, but sometimes it's so difficult to make it happen and makes the puzzle annoying, rather than challenging. Many times I'll know what to do and the beast will simply not do what I want.

Some areas of the game are badly glitched as well. In one part of the game, you need the beast to pull a chain to raise a gate so that you can put two wheels underneath it to prop it up. The problem is that the beast would simply never raise the gate to a sufficient height for me, no matter which buttons I pressed. I had to reload my checkpoint fix times before suddenly and randomly the beast was able to raise the gate high enough.

You know when someone talks about wanting to replay a game, but then they remember an atrocious escort scene in it and leave the game along? Well, this whole game is an atrocious escort scene. I love solving hard puzzles, and in the past I studied combinatorics and I was that student that put puzzles and riddles in your school's newspapers. Although I like the fact that the beast is required for the puzzles and adds extra elements to them, controlling the beast is far too frustrating.

I feel depressed when I try to feed the beast food - most of the time it just hits the face of the beast instead of the beast catching it in its mouth. Search for "dog hit by frisebee" because that image pretty much describes my experiences with the beast.

I paid $89.99 CAD plus tax on this game, and after many years of waiting for it, I am extremely disappointed. Usually I'm a cheap gamer and try to make use of any game as much as possible, scouring and replaying multiple times for unlockables and secrets, but for once I might not even finish this game. A guide tells me I'm 4/5's through the story so I'm going to try soon to finish it up.

It's an amazing game with an amazing story. If you like face paced Call of duty games you won't like this game.

This game is about the story, about emotion and about your friendsship with Trico. A must have for fans of the genre. It's funny to see all those Xbots giving this game 1 score, because they are jealous. They only see a new Forza, Halo and gears every now and then, no

Controls are tricky at first, the frame-rate isn't particularly great, but this game isn't any less magical because of those faults. The Last Guardian, like ICO and SotC before it, is an emotional journey that's unlike anything else.

Since this game took so many years to make and went through tough times, it's a miracle that it turned out as well as it did.

Well I have to say that the game play is poor and the camera is annoying sometimes, the game have some problems of frame rate, I don't know how Sony gave "green light" to sell the game with this basic problems, this important things that make a video game a VIDEO GAME. Some people are giving 90-1

Trophies show that only 4.4% of players have beaten the game. That tells you all you need to know about the "reviews" here. Why don't you all come back and review the game once you've actually beaten it, yeah?

First things first, the animations in this game are the best I've ever seen in a videogame.
Some people consider "graphics" the still frames, rendering and lights only. In reality, the animations in this game bring it in the realm of excellence. If you are a fan of great animations, this game should not be missed.
As for the game as a whole, this is an experience you should not miss in

This game is Amazing! I can't wait to play through it again this weekend! You won't regret the purchase, this is game of the year material and it's a shame it is only 15 hours long. But there's still a lot more to do that I didn't do my first playthrough.

There are too many games that are mechanical, rigid, repetitive and boring.
This is different. This is Trico, an organic and truly lifelike creature that make you wholeheatedly invest your emotions in and care about. This is the true meaning of immersion and fantasy.
No control or camera flaw could justify you not living this lifetime experience of a game.

Excelent, it is diferent, not stupid violence. If i could describe in one word this game, I would say "ART". If you want a call of duty or Gears of war, this is not your game. Recomiendo totalmente el juego.

After 7 years in what seems to be development hell, Team Ico finally introduces us to the majestic Trico and its heartfelt relationship with a young protagonist. While the long development cycle does show its age in certain parts up to a point of some frustration. The experience as a whole is one of the most unique ever.

The Last guardian is indeed suffering from some technical and control input issues, but its warm, beautiful adventure filled with countless touching moments is something we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives. The Last Guardian is not just a game, it’s an absolute work of art.

The Last Guardian doesn't just live up to its forebears' legacy, it goes further. Despite the callbacks to Fumito Ueda's previous works, it is a unique creation. Outside of indie experiments, we don't get to say that about modern videogames often enough.
