    Voice acting 10/10 - I'm really curious as to how you direct voice actors to emote so well with a made up language.

    Controls 5/10 - I have to be honest as much as I loved this game the controls were incredibly frustrating. If I wasn't so invested in the game for all of it's other qualities I wouldn't have persevered with such horrible input control.

    Additional Note: I've noticed some people complain that the game doesn't take long to complete. I question whether or not these people used a walkthrough guide to complete the game. If you didn't take the time to figure out the game's puzzles on your own, you probably shouldn't be commenting on the game's 'length' at all.

There's really no minimum age for grasping the puzzles in this game, only for coping with the nightmarish enemies and the frustrating obtuse interactions with the AI companion. The "artistic" concept and fascinating experience do not make up for
    the basic formulaic gameplay sections, and forum-discussions reveal that few have even understood what the abstract story was about. Maybe the developer just doesn't care about being understood. PROTIP: Before instructing the game's AI, there must be 1 press of the same button, to call for AI attention. Then, when the AI companion responds visibly, it can receive 1 instruction. If the button is pressed additional times, or even gets spammed or smashed (as players throw controllers in utter frustration) then the AI gets "confused" and the player will not enjoy that moment.

    A beautiful minimalistic game with superb artistic detail. The only problem is that this masterpiece cannot be fully enjoyed due to the horrible camera and game physics. Presently, one cannot be fully amazed by how rare it is to complain about camera issues in present day games.

    Stuck in almost 10 years of development hell, I never thought this game would be released. Excited to finally get my hands on it, I dove in this past week and ended up binging it all the way through.

    The follow up to Shadow of Colossus and ICO has improved upon its predecessors in many ways in narration, graphics, and story. The interactions with Trico, your bird-dog friend, are incredibly believable and life-like. I've never felt such a strong attachment to a virtual animal before. They really nailed the animations and AI on Trico.

    Unfortunately, it also suffers from the same glaring issue in all 3 titles: the controls. The control scheme is so incredibly awkward and frustrating at times that it can really hold the game back. If you can power through it and train your brain to it it's not so bad but it does take some patience.

    Looking past the control issues, The Last Guardian is an incredibly unique game with a touching story filled with many jaw-dropping moments. It doesn't have the prettiest graphics or stable framerate but it makes up for it with life-like animations and an interesting story that starts off slow and goes out with a bang. One of the most unique games of this console generation.

    8/10

    Final Verdict: Looking past the controls, it's a unique slow-burn experience that requires dedication but pays off in the end with an unbelievably life-like attachment to a pixelated animal companion.

    Starting with my journey with the nicest creature I have ever played with, Trico, which will never be forgotten easily. He/it was like my real-life pet-friend. Trico's actions, sorrowfulness, happiness, appreciation ...etc truly affects me. This game made me smile, worried, cry, laugh, and most importantly it made me experience a journey cannot be experienced any time soon, I guess.
    Thank you @Fumito_Ueda for believing in your dreams after so many difficult years. I wish they will make a follow-up, something from Trico's viewpoint.
    Finally, yes, this game has some control flaws, but it didn't affect my own experience AT ALL, that's why I'll not take anything out of my 10/10 here.

I think I would have enjoyed it much more if I could actually control the creature directly.

    The atmosphere, environments, and the story are where most of the 5 star reviews seem to be coming from. These facets of the game are indeed excellent, but unlike the five-star reviewers I cannot look past the frustration of the controls and the camera angles.

    If you can tolerate the frustrations outlined above, then you will have found yourself a very interesting game. Otherwise, it might be best avoided.

The puzzles aren't super challenging, but manipulating the boy and beast to solve them is often infuriating.

    Pros: Trico is a cute character. Graphics are beautiful. Storyline is interesting and creative.

    Final Thoughts: With the controls being as unresponsive as they are, this would make a better movie than game. I can't recommend it unless you have patience for finicky controls. I found myself screaming at the game throughout even to the very end when there was yet another repetitive cut scene where I wasn't sure if I had to press a button to make it continue or if I just needed to watch Trico look right then left then right then left then right then left again and again until he started doing something else. It was the latter, but I still pressed buttons, saw the boy do stuff, and then saw it have no effect whatsoever on the scene making me still not sure if I had to do something else. The pacing reminded me of older style Japanese films that are edited to progress slowly. It can be nice in a movie, but it's extremely frustrating in a game where it's unclear when the player is in control of pacing and when they aren't.
    I'm so glad I got it on sale for $15. I would have been absolutely furious if I had paid $60 for this piece of beautiful garbage. Unfortunately, the stuff I liked didn't overcome the extremely frustrating experience of the game as a whole. I really want to like this game as much as I like Trico, but I just can't. The gameplay was too frustrating.

As you scale towers and uncover the mystery behind your meeting, you learn about Trico’s past and read his body language to help you solve puzzles.

In conclusion, The Last Guardian is rather faulty in its programming, but the game stumbles none as it presents a heartwarming story between a boy and his gigantic friend.

For me, this game is more of a revelation than even Shadow of the Colossus was. I consider it essential gaming because it advances the medium's potential for realism. The Last Guardian requires players to show greater care, have more patience, and take greater personal responsibility in forging their relationship with Trico, a character that is not simply an object that you badger with a stick or shoot with a gun or grab onto and pull, but is in its own right a more genuinely realized being than any other character I can think of in video games. Yes, you will have to wait for a giant bird-beast to scratch its ears before you can charge through the game's areas. But it is the frustration of having to account for your indispensable, dangerous counterpart that makes the game's jaw-dropping set pieces so emotionally visceral. I have never felt such raw and real emotions as I have playing this game. This game advances the medium because it can teach us about living in a world with not only other animals but other people. Few other games, if any, have realized this essential feature of the arts. Expand

    I usually do not even consider commenting, but this time things are different.
    First of all, please, for f*cks sake, do not read the negative comments. Why? Because when someone likes something - he/she usually does not even consider leaving a good comment or even a score, but when someone is very upset (even though he/she could be rightfully upset) - sh*t hits the fan immediately.

    More info:
    Controls - 1-4 out of 10, depending on a situation (yes, the wining did not come from nothing this time around);
    Gameplay - 6 out of 10, since the puzzles and platforming sequences are not challenging (and yes - the control and camera issues do not "help" here, no, apologies);
    Sound/Music - 9/10 and 7/10 (not a whole lot of music there, unfortunately, thus the lower score even though the music itself is really nice);
    Performance - PS4 Pro with supersamling enabled give a 30-40 frames/sec, which is qood for this game;
    Visuals (tech.) - 7/10 (there are a lot of small details, especially for Trico);
    Visuals (aesthetics) - 10/10 (the game often looks jaw dropping);
    Story - 8/10 (slightly mysterious tale of a friendship).

    Summary:
    If You're here for swordfighting game or some fast-paced action - there's nothing for You here. The main star here is obviously this creature, Trico. It is totally believable. It is alive. This is not just another piece of code and result of work in 3d editor. It is a pure result of love, caring, devotion. It is one big emotion. One that You should not miss.

    1) Controls are not clear, it's a complete guess-the-controls game. Literally, there are parts of the game where you have to press all the buttons desperately, like when you play mortal kombat against your non-gamer girlfriend.
    2) Camera control is annoying, it loses context all the time and it's impossible to focus on what you want. You can't even enjoy the environment because the camera moves around alone, making you lose focus of everything.
    3) You're supposed to have control over Trico (your companion), but it follows your instructions as much as a puppy, so you can imagine how annoying this is.
    4) It's the first game with puzzles where it's not enough to know the solution. You have to be completely sure about that, because you have to yield to your pet, run and scream loudly, and even pray, to get the damn pet to do what it needs to do.
    5) In terms of technical achievements, the game has nothing. Really bad graphics, bad performance (even in a PS4 Pro the frame rate drops to less than 15fps in small areas), but I think that's acceptable since the game was 10 years in development and the PS4 was not even in the radar when they started with this game.
    6) Funny thing, there's a trophy if you complete the game in less than 5 hours. It's a game to be completed in 2 hours if the god damn pet follow your instructions, but it's so slow and annoying that it ends up taking 12 hours...

    Truly an excellent game overall, and I wonder if I would have enjoyed the story as much if I never got bored. By being bored, I interacted with Trico more, and built a relationship with him. It made the story more impactful, and I Don't know of another way to accomplish that goal.

    I take off points because I don't really have an urge to play it again, but I am extremely happy that I played through and the experience I had.

    The game design is really cool and the way you use Trico to solve puzzles is amazing. Unfortunutaly the game suffers from severe technical issues. This is unnacable considering how long it's been in development. Because of this I can't possible give it more than 5/10.

    So what's the issues?

    1. The movement and input is among the worst I've ever seen. I've fallen of edges and missed jumps countless times simply because of how bad the input system is. It's easier to drive a tank than to control the character in this game. It's impossible to explain, you have to experience it.

    2. The camera, well, I won't even go there. Pathetic how it made it past quality assurance.

    2. Trico is literary retarded. Often you have to tell him 10 times what to do before he actually does it. Sometimes you try to make him jump and it doesn't work in 3 attempts which makes you think you're supposed to do something else and run around for 30 min just to come back and try again and this time it suddenly works. I've had to restart checkpoints simply because Trico bugs out (tail getting stuck on things so I can't reach and climb it, getting stuck not doing anything etc) and after restart it works again, when I do the exact same commands at the exact same spot. You won't know if you're unable to progress because you're doing something wrong or because the game has simply bugged out. If it happened once or twice it would be okay, but it's happeing ALL THE TIME.

    Unique premise, awe-inspiring art direction, and a touching story cannot quite overcome consistently frustrating controls, annoying camera & unclear objectives. As much as you may love certain special aspects, it is a chore to complete with essentially zero replay value.

    I think this game is a revelation. There are a problem with the cam in small space, but the rest is incredible. I love It.The puzzles are well made and the emotional charge in the last part is to strong. During the adventure you create a feeling with Trico and grows more and more. Some flaws in the control system and camera angles and the occasional frustrations of the beast taint what would otherwise be a classic. Persevera to see beyond its flaws and you will form a bond with a video game character like no other character before Trico.

The devs completed the game because of the fans. We should support it so the devs will continue making good games like these. They might had a tough time fixing the AI and camera, but we pushed them enough so they released it. With the reduced price, I think this is the perfect package. Regardless of frustrating controls and camera movement, this is a truly amazing game. All the cons are completely substituted by excellent story, which is more emotional than I'm used to in games. Great work, and Trico character is truly marvelous. Yeah...about that much time. Shadow of the Colossus was the game that had me anticipating the next game from team Ico. I did get around to playing Ico once the remastered version came to the PS3. I can appreciate a bleak, silent narrative and had an idea of what to expect going into The Last Guardian...a story told mostly through silence and a lonely journey towards some unhappy ending. For the most part I got that, but not without suffering through some of the most frustrating controls and camera behavior in my entire gaming history. (I am "old" by the way and have played games for many years.) The kid in this game is nice to look at animation-wise, but that comes at the cost of any type of sharpness when turning corners, dodging, jumping, swimming, climbing, or feeding barrels of who-the-hell-knows-what to your "pal" Trico. The controls are the main enemy in this game...nevermind the usual team Ico weird villians. We don't get shadow men or giants this time....simply stone statue men who chase the boy and try to carry you into doors to oblivion. Evading those guys was hell on earth. Running is terribly clunky and the boy will fall on his face half the time. You also have a dive move but the boy will jump and slam right into the wall (there are many tight corridors in the game) or into the stone guys and also face-plant over and over again. It was so frustrating trying to run away from those idiots over and over again while running back to a giant chain that I had to pull to open huge gates to get Trico inside the room just so he could smash them eventually. And after he does smash them he jumps around like he has rabies until you can sloppily climb on his back and give him a massage while attempting to pull spears from his body that the stone men toss into him. Trico is AI controlled and is pretty competent for the most part. He does tend to ignore your commands from time to time. There are lost of sections where he does most of the platforming for you, giving you a break from the sloppy controls. The game does a pretty bad job of telling you where to go next or what to look for if you don't pay attention to very small hints such as Trico investigating something or looking at a certain area. When Trico isn't around, things are even more ambiguous. You just may find yourself stuck for long periods of time before resorting to looking up guides on the internet. The bond the developers were going for between the boy and Trico never materialized with me because I was too buy trying to do simple things like climb Trico's body when I needed to with some sense of direction or getting him to respond to basic commands in the most simple sections. I was so tired of trying to fight the controls and get Trico to do what I wanted him to do that by the end I didn't care what happened to either one of the characters. And I was one of the players who didn't have that horrible a time figuring out what the game wanted of me. I caught on to all the commands and saw that Trico was basically pointing me in the right directions throughout the journey. The game isn't very long if you know what to do and where to go and there is no reason to play through it again after seeing the ending. It was just a very mediocre experience to me. The animation was great, the movement and feathers flowing in the wind was constantly pleasant to look at, the game was just never fun to play at any point...and in the end, that is what a video game is supposed to be...no matter how artistic the vision. I can only recommend this as a rental. I was hugely disappointed...even the ending was bland and not worth the trouble I went through to see it. I played this on the PS4 Pro I got it for 39.99. Anyone who paid 60 dollars for this was robbed. Expand

    On the other side, the high quality is not constant. It isn't easy to guide Trico and the controls appear dated. Sometimes the camera is to close or Trico just doesn't do what you try to tell him. If you are patient and have enough time this isn't really a big problem. Another point is that the environment looks very beautiful in the bright fog, this creates depth and the visual style, but the evening lighting without fog in the last part of the game doesn't look convincing. The frame-rate is not constant and the textures of the interiors are to monotonous.

The camera is often difficult to control, there are glitches and controlling Trico can be frustrating but the story is masterfully crafted. It gets progressively better the further you get. I can't think of any games in recent memory that gave me such an experience of wonder and made me want to learn more about its world.

    While it is certainly a game with flaws, the Last Guardian is the definition of being more than the sum of it's parts. Just like Ico and Shadow of the Colossus, it is a game that is far more about it's mystery, imaginative concepts and emotional journey than it is about gameplay. There were times that I was frustrated by the controls, camera and gameplay restrictions but at the end of the journey those complaints seem minor compared to the unique tale that I had experienced.

    It has been 11 years since the Shadow of the Colossus was released so in light of that expectations were rightfully very high. The Last Guardian, admittedly, should have been far better than Shadow of the Colossus and Ico considering how much time it took to make and how far technology has come. To be perfectly fair, it isn't better than those games but I would say it is just as good. I think the reason that it didn't get a better average score is simply because it came out too late. If it had come out three years after Shadow of the Colossus it would have been ranked as one of the best games of all time just like that game is. I was one of the people that was frustrated by the wait for this game and I still think it took way too long but playing it was like returning to a magical world that I was once kicked out of ten years ago. Once I got in a ways, I was just happy to be back.

    How you feel about this game will likely depend a lot on what type of person you are. This isn't a game for everyone, it doesn't have something to satisfy every type of gamer like GTA or Zelda, it isn't a game with mass market appeal that tries to have it all. Yet for those who appreciate this type of game is a rare bit of magic that only comes around a few times in a decade.

I found the Last Guardian to be very satisfying in their visual presentation of the boy, Trico, and their relationship. The two go from one problem to another, working together as they try to escape their current confinement, and move to the next. One problem is that their dilemma is pretty inexplicable. They're trapped in this huge labyrinthine castle. Not only are there no clues as to why given, but there are no little respite areas to explore. The demands just go on incessantly. Because the boy and Trico are, naturally enough, unable to converse, the stark settings and endless problems make the game's tempo austere and relentless. A bit more reveal on the backstory to stir up curiosity could have been melded with some non-death-defying interludes of exploration to open up the experience and make it more fun. As it is, if you want to spend many hours escaping a sometimes gorgeous prison, with leaps and creeps, going from one puzzle to another, with the help of a beautifully rendered beast-helper, but with nary a sign of another human (evil robots don't count) this is a great game for you. The Last Guardian is the latest game from Fumito Ueda, of ICO and Shadow of the Colossus fame. It is definitely echoing ICO (I loved that game!) in its basic structure. The player controls a young boy and along with the giant beast named Trico they have to escape from a castle and a mysterious force that keeps them trapped. The story background is vague but its centre plot is really touching.

    The game is based on environmental puzzles and a bit of platforming in some huge areas. Therefore you have to treat Trico as a giant moving platform/ladder that you can freely move around and scale. You will be amazed when you and Trico jump over big chasms, it's a new sense of gaming scale. You can also give some commands to Trico, but it is programmed to behave as a real animal instead of the always obedient horse in Shadow of the Colossus, and this can lead to some frustrations. There are times when Trico will act on his own, jump to some place only to come back at the same spot. Thankfully this isn't anything gamebreaking, but still it's an issue that appears from time to time.

    The biggest problem for me is poor frame rate on standard PS4 and heavy controls, along with a laggy and cumbersome camera. I am not fanatic about fps numbers, I can forgive the constant 20-25 fps, but the controls are a bit floaty. Since the same issues were present on both ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, it must be a Fumito Ueda trademark. At least PS4 Pro owners can run the game at 1080p and locked 30fps, for a more enjoyable experience than the 4K mode.

    The Last Guardian is a clear 10/10 score in terms of concept, art, architecture and the whole Trico animation, but the aforementioned issues bring it down to an 8/10 score. Still these are not able to seriously detract from one of the best and most moving experiences in videogames. The game suffered from its nearly 10-year-long development and numerous delays, but it has finally delivered Fumito Ueda's vision for his kind of games. Let's hope Ueda-san comes back with another adventure.

    Shadow of the Colossus is easily in my top 10 games of all time, making this review a bit of a sad affair.

    The Good
    - It's an interesting concept, combing Ico with Shadow of the Colossus, tag-teaming with a giant creature to try and solve puzzles and navigate a crumbling ruin.
    - The graphics, while overall looking very PS3 instead of PS4, occasionally have their moments and can occasionally be beautiful. The physics feels pretty cool, things bounce around and smash nicely.
    - The animation on the creature is spot-on. The animators did a really good job of bringing it to life and giving it personality.

    The Bad
    - It's clear this game languished in development hell for years. There's hints of a solid concept here, but it looks like the developers couldn't actually make things work to match with the creator's vision. The result is a glorified tech demo.
    - Many puzzles are so obtuse you will literally never figure them out without consulting a walkthrough. Puzzles are repeated a dozen times, i.e. 'oh another eye mirror, how do I smash this one?' Several puzzles just aren't that interesting to solve anyway, less 'aha!' and more 'are you kidding me, that's what you wanted me to do?'. As your frustration increases, halfway through the game you'll give up and just have the walkthrough open on your phone anyway. A few play-testing sessions watching actual players get permanently stuck would have cleaned all this up immeasurably.
    - The game is *extremely* linear. I get the impression after years of failed attempts to create an interactive, exploratory experience with the creature/code failing to fulfill it's end of the bargain the team was forced to cut back to something extremely short, linear, repetitive and largely based on cutscenes. Expect 20-25% of the game to be waiting patiently until you can play again. There is one way through and if you can't find it you will simply wander around in a room until you do. In some cases you're not supposed to be wandering anyway, the creature will simply hop to the next section for you, much to your frustration.
    - The boy's controls, presumably in the interest of showcasing his fluid animations, making the game feel tense and/or your character feel a bit helpless, are extremely sloppy. Halfway through the game you're still getting tutorial prompts because you still need them.
    - If you need a Japanese voiceover with subtitles to tell you what to do every other puzzle or so you've completely failed at prompting the player to solve things on his/her own. Go back to the drawing board and clean up the level design and cues/clues so that the player feels like they're figuring things out on their own.
    - Mashing buttons to make glowing shapes go away every time you die is such a poor design decision I can't believe it actually shipped in the final version of the game. This makes me wonder if nobody on the team is able to even give the creator feedback anymore, or if everything is subservient to his 'vision'.

    The Ugly
    - The creature's AI is a nightmare of indifference, ineptitude, confusion and irritation. The creature failed to catch me a half dozen times leading me to fall to my death, but suddenly caught me once, long after I'd assumed I was doing the wrong thing and explored every avenue for another route. I also sat in a tree for about 20 minutes mashing the 'help' button until it decided it was ready to save me. That's beyond ridiculous. That's not gameplay. It's more like if you took your dog to the supermarket and tried to painstakingly teach him to shop for groceries over days or weeks while it looked at you in confusion. After hours of begging, pleading and cajoling, and occasionally screaming at it, I actually grew to hate the stupid thing. I'm assuming this was not the studio's intention, lol.
    - The 'cinematic' camera is one of the most frustrating things I've experienced in a video game. The only explanation here is an underpaid, irate programmer who was hell-bent on creating something that would literally nauseate players.

    The main characters the little boy and Trico are extremely likable and have great chemistry, people complained about Trico not responding to you when you ask him to do something...well that's kind of the point of the game, it starts of with Trico not obeying you but as the game continues, he starts to trust you and listens to you.
    The puzzles were actually creative, they were well done and fun, and the gameplay was also pretty good, sometimes the little boy was stiff to control but I got quickly used to it so I considered it acceptable...

    What wasn't acceptable was the freaking camera, that's what stopping this game getting a higher score because this camera was just awful, it kept getting stuck in objects and walls, it just made the entire experience less enjoyable and sometimes painful to play.

    It's sad that this one little detail made this game less enjoyable to play, I'm sure it will get patched at some point, but for now it really pissed me off, the rest is amazing, it's charming likeable and touching, I would wait a price drop because it's pretty short but if you find this game for like 40 or 30 dollars, definitely pick it up, it is worth it but you should expect that your greatest enemy will be the camera.

    A unique, one of a kind game, highly recommended for all animal lovers. The experience with Trico will be remembered for years to come.

    Trico is actually not that hard to control so long as you know how to correctly interact with him. The major flaw I find in this game is the dull enemy design. But the best ever animal made in video games can make up for everything.

    An incredible and beautiful adventure that explores the blossoming friendship between a boy and a beast. The Last Guardian overcomes frustrating controls and camera to be an emotional and unique experience.

    Pros:
    - Wonderful art direction. This game is so full of stunning scenescapes that it's a shame there isn't an included photo mode
    - Excellent character development. The relationship between Trico and the boy is built believably and with solid pacing.
    - Perfect animations: whether it's the boy's clumsy running, Trico scratching behind his ear, or the far too realistic gait of the living armor, this game nails the animations, lending realness to every piece of this fantastic world
    - Cinematic set pieces; repeatedly felt like you were playing cut scenes at the best times
    - Trico; the beast itself is amazing to bond with. The number of times I laughed at some small action, excitedly perked up when he came to my rescue, or feared for his well being were innumerable. I truly cared for him.
    - Intriguing world
    - Good voice acting - this whole game could have gone south very quickly if the boy's voice was annoying. Thankfully it was spot on, as was the narration

    Cons:
    - Terrible camera. Had to spend far too much time fighting the stupid thing to see where I was trying to go.
    - Poor controls. Jumping, throwing and climbing all felt loose and too often unresponsive
    - Numerous low-res textures can break immersion at times

    Mixed:
    - The puzzles can be infuriatingly hard sometimes, but they almost all make sense. They just require thinking outside the box.
    - While commanding Trico is very rewarding when it works well, it can be endlessly frustrating when it doesn't.

    Though flawed, The Last Guardian is a unique and emotional experience that should be undertaken. The game does an excellent job creating a real connection with the characters, and its a friendship no one should miss out on.

    An amazing journey! although the graphics are not up to date with other PS4 games the journey through the game more than makes up for it. The puzzles can be challenging as well as getting Trico to do what you want him to do. This does however contribute to the game and make the connection between the boy and Trico feel very real.

    Overall one of the best single player games out there.

    I'm going to come out and say it right now, This game looks beautiful. I cannot find a single fault in the graphics, as such with the soundtrack. Although no tracks exactly stuck with me like in SOTC, i still enjoyed it all. Trico is adorable, and I found myself engrossed in his small mannerisms and personality than I probably should have. As much as I love all the care and effort put into the world, and the aesthetics of the game,....I have to say it.... this game is just boring for the most part.

    Let me just say, if you're not a fan of Ico or SOTC, The Last Guardian may not have anything for you. This game sold solely based on its likeness to those 2 games. The beginning of the game is great, the ending is fantastic, but I found myself loathing almost everything inbetween. Really, not much happens. The gameplay mostly consists of you, as a little boy, guiding Trico to the next area, where you can do it again to get to the next area. I just didn't find it fun. While I did enjoy the 2 characters and the bond they formed, I for the most part couldn't bring myself to play the game for more than an hour before shutting it off.

    I see a lot of complaints about the controls, I don't see that at all. The controls are fine, it's just the overall gameplay design that falls flat. The combat is mostly just watching Trico smack enemies across the room, then petting him when its over. A lot of the time, the puzzle solutions are really easy, it's just the tedious act of getting there that kills it for me. Also, Trico's AI is sometimes amazing, sometimes poor. I found myself having to give a command 20+ times before he heeded. Part of me feels this is a gameplay design, to have it behave just like a wild animal, and if so, I applaud. But if not, then it needs to be fixed.

    Like I said, I am really hurt to give this game such a low score, but this is legitimately how I felt when playing it. I just didn't enjoy it. I really would have liked to, but I just couldn't. This was my most hyped game of all time, it was supposed to be my GOTY, not my most dissapointing game of the year. 5/10

Having the camera continually wander around in different directions and different distances like a drunk has control of it is just crazy. The controls for the kid are useless too, you can either creep at 0.2kmh or sprint everywhere, which combined with the camera constantly wandering all over the place made this game genuinely frustrating and uncomfortable and ruined any enjoyment for me. My own character less so...mostly because of the incredibly soft controls and the fact that the only forward motion available is slowly creeping along in a funny cartoon like pose or running headlong, and subsequently falling off ledges etc. However, sadly I found that I could only play it in short bursts because I just found it not fun enough to put up with the ongoing frustration of the rubbish controls and trying to figure out what to do and where to go next with virtually zero direction. I eventually 'got' that you have to try everything until something works but it's hard to tell sometimes whether you're simply barking up the wrong tree or the right tree but doing it wrong. In the end though, the thing that broke it for me was the difficulties in managing my own characters movements. I got to a place where I had to get Trico to jump up against a wall so I could leap off his head onto a broken staircase and I did eventually get Trico in position four or five times.....each time taking quite a while as he does everything slowly...but then I could NOT get myself positioned to make the leap accurately and would just fly off into space instead, then have to start the whole process again. I don't know what's going on with that but I found at different times in the game I fell off him because my character wasn't holding on or he wouldn't stop holding on when I wanted him to jump off. Aaaargh! What is that? Other than just bad programming?? It's not a a new experience for me to arrive at a point in a game where I hit a wall and have to repeat over and over until I get the hang of it or figure out what I'm supposed to do, but in this instance I eventually came to the conclusion that I just wasn't having enough fun to want to keep trying. Visually it is beautiful - the animation is often stunning - and I would have liked to see where the story went but at the end of the day it was a definite 'IRBPSE' situation....I'd Rather Be Playing Something Else. Of course, I am sure there are exceptions to this, but they feel too similar in terms of gameplay, movements and environmental puzzles.

    Trico's movements and AI should be praised as it is a technical marvel. It feels alive, it is not your everyday AI companion. And the way Team Ico makes the relationship between the boy and Trico develop through gameplay feels genuine, organic and human. This alone gives a lot of life and humanity to the game.

    The art of the game is what you can expect from a Team Ico game. Both the music and the environmental design is fantastic. Personally, I finished the game wanting more from this world, from its culture, its creatures, and I feel this universe has potential for an animated series. The world feels so well crafted that 10 hours of -good- gameplay don't do it justice. I simply wanted more.

    There are a few things that prevent this game from a higher score in my opinion:

    - A few minor frame drops. It does not happen all the time, but they are likely to occur in outside areas.
    - Trico's instruction and command system. I feel this system has a learning curve and eventually you will learn which commands are most useful in certain circumstances. However, I feel the game fails to make this system more accessible for everyone.
    - Camera issues at some points.

    Despite these problems, the game was an amazing experience for me, and I definitely recommend it. For those who don't enjoy puzzle / platforming games, I still think you should give it a try because of its story, character development and, of course, Trico.

My main problem with the game are the boring sequences in which either the boy or trico are supposed to be in "distress". They always end anticlimactically and are never really exciting to begin with. After traversing the beautiful landscapes and getting connected to trico for so long I'd expect a little payoff. But it's just not there... This game is great eye candy for sure and can also put a smile on your face for a while. But the climactic scenes just pull you away from that and don't really do a good job of creating the feeling that I assume the creators wanted you too. Expand

    After 7 years in what seems to be development hell, Team Ico finally introduces us to the majestic Trico and its heartfelt relationship with a young protagonist. While the long development cycle does show its age in certain parts up to a point of some frustration. The experience as a whole is one of the most unique ever.

    The Last guardian is indeed suffering from some technical and control input issues, but its warm, beautiful adventure filled with countless touching moments is something we’ll never forget for the rest of our lives. The Last Guardian is not just a game, it’s an absolute work of art.

    The Last Guardian doesn't just live up to its forebears' legacy, it goes further. Despite the callbacks to Fumito Ueda's previous works, it is a unique creation. Outside of indie experiments, we don't get to say that about modern videogames often enough.
