The Hong Kong Massacre is a game that will leave you with vivid memories. The awesome stunts you pulled off, the impossible feats you were able to achieve, and the crazy killing sprees will all stick in your mind. It is a game that perfectly executes on a vision and offers some of the most gratifying few hours you can find in gaming today.

The Hong Kong Massacre is an intense and gratifying experience that Hotline Miami's fans and lovers will enjoy the most. It has its flaws (low-res videos, difficulty peaks at some points, gameplay repetition...) that draw it from being a must, but VRESKI's first game delivers with strong visuals, rhythm and challenge.

A good twinstick shooter. Accompanied by cool electro-beats creates a martial flow, but in the long run you'll miss greater variety.

The Hong Kong Massacre isn't as interesting as it looked, unfortunately. While gameplay is intense and challenging, the scenario fails to drive us through those very repetitive sequences.

At a first glance The Hong Kong Massacre appears to be nothing more than a Hotline Miami clone. However, beneath its samey exterior the game differentiates itself with some quirky mechanics that make it a real blast to play. [Issue#160, p.89]

Undeniably entertaining and often thrilling, The Hong Kong Massacre's chances of matching its inspirations are seriously undermined by a lack of care, variety, and an utterly lifeless story.

The Hong Kong Massacre's inspiration is clear, but unfortunately, it doesn't have the gameplay, the personality, or the energy to stand alongside it. The slow-mo shooting can be fun, but with tough enemies and a janky dodge manoeuvre, you'll more often than not be frustrated by death after death. With a little more polish, it could've been an entertaining romp, but as it stands, redeeming qualities are few and far between.

Hotline Miami is indeed a masterpiece and has a depth that The Hong Kong Massacre lacks. But it is a great game nonetheless. The slow motion is a great gimmick that almost kills the gameplay. Once you get the hang of it the game gets too easy. So much that the middle part of the game feels repetitive. Only in the last part of the game the difficulty increases (the number of enemies and the challenging angles you need to use to kill them) and the fun is back. You lack the visibility you have in Hotline Miami, since you cannot move the map around you at all and the environment can be confusing at times but I guess it was intended this way as part of the difficulty. All in all a great game. Expand

This game is two levels above Hotline Miami with the dodge and slow down time mechanics. The trophies involve being able to beat this game without using these mechanics which seems almost impossible.

If you liked Hotline Miami then you’ll love this game. It’s great at what it is trying to be. Just a fun and addictive game, while at the same time admittedly frustrating.

Firstly, I loved Hotline Miami 1 and 2. Very difficult but very rewarding and quirky. The best way to describe it, and I'm stealing from another interview is "Hong Kong Massacre is the younger brother of Hotline Miami, who is really really good looking ". The game is fun but lacks the polish of Hotline Miami. Looks nice though. Lot of weird clipping issues. Expand

You kill withThe Hong Kong Massacre is like Hotline Miami but in a more grounded realistic setting. It is fast, bloody and often difficult. You kill with one bullet and got killed by one single gun shot. You can upgrade your guns which helps you to get a better rating for previous levels, so you can upgrade them even more. Level design is really nice, you have multiple options to master it and the music always drives you to new heights.

An unique shooter experience but prepare to die. Often. Very often.

    EDIT:

Story is pretty much non-existing and hit detection of the shotgun sometimes a pain in the ... I had to lower the score from 9 to 7.

This game plays like a Great Value version of that anyway. The only issue is they devs forgot to make it fluid, fun, or even interesting. It has that lazy barebones feeling that other indies such as Skater XL also have. Not worth any amount of money, maybe worth looking at if you find it on a subscription service but at the end of the day, it's just not fun. Expand
