The controls (although mouse was not implemented) are flawless everything responds exemplary. The content ... well the content is ... I have no words for it ... other than godlike in every aspect.

Crap-loads of new items (it will probably be weeks before you can memorize what they all do) with brilliant interactions and new mechanics, each game plays differently ... and when I say differently I mean it almost feels like it's another game entirely.

Support the developers and buy this game! This is too good ... you will be playing and enjoying it a lot more that whatever else 15$ or your local equivalent can buy. I guarantee it.

In a vast pool of games that hold your hand to ensure you win, this game throws you in there with little to no instruction or explanation of the various upgrades you can get. This game feels like an old Zelda title mixed with Smash TV. The randomly generated levels keep it fresh, and as you play more and more runs you unlock more and more stuff such as items, upgrades, and bosses. I'm still seeing new things in this game, and I'm closing in on my 100th run!

The only reason it lost one point is because of the grotesque backdrop, but the reality is that I got used to all the poop trying to kill me (literally, poop). This game definitely has a dark, twisted side to it.

Everyone's entitled to an opinion, and I'm not by any means degrading the negative reviews. This game won't be for everyone. The only reviews I will address are those comparing this to a story driven game such as The Last of Us. If you're looking for a compelling story, you are definitely in the wrong place.

I was a bit disappointed by the coop mode, as the 2nd player cannot choose his character, cannot pickup items or cash and have less health than first player. Otherwise I have nothing negative to say. The game is very challenging, the rooms are randomly generated, there are plenty of original items, secret rooms, great boss battles, tremendous replayability... and it's just very, very fun.

PS4 owners who are fans of "roguelite" games CANNOT MISS THIS ONE. The game is challenging, addicting, kinda gross, varied, and stupid fun. I actually prefer the old art style from the PC version, but there are unlockable filters if you decide you don't like the new visuals. Anyway, if you are a fan of these types of games, BOI:R is perfect.

While I really enjoyed Danny B's original track, I absolutely LOVE Rediculon's. Although it's not as catchy, the new track does a far better job of setting the mood(mostly despair) that should be felt on each floor.

The frame rate is near-perfect, which was a gripe of mine with the original. Because of this, the game feels smooth, and I notice that I'm much better at playing this version than the original.

I don't think the game is easier (as some have suggested) per se. It is definitely more balanced. some of the items are unlocked differently than they were in the original. There is a heart container cap now. The rooms seem much more fair now, although there are a few that I still cringe at whenever I enter them.
Some of the new characters are a blast to play, and some have had some tweaks to them.

The controls took me a little getting used to after playing the original on PC with a keyboard for so long. I actually think it's very functional and controls just as well, if not better than with a keyboard.

I really enjoy the new shop donation mechanic and it really opens up more opportunities.

I honestly can't really think of anything negative to say about this title. I can understand that it definitely isn't everyone's cup of tea. It's difficult, however I never blamed the game like I have some rogue-likes.

This is steered more towards those who haven't tried the original:
If poop, gore, or religious fun-poling aren't your thing, you probably won't like it.

If you're a fan of the original, this is a no-brainer.

    Exceptionally solid title 9/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game brought me happily into the world of roguelikes. Let me rephrase: Binding of Isaac did, this is an expanded version. This game doesn't boast an entirely new game. The game's creator was very vocal about Flash limitations, and this game has been given the creative space and development capability that the creator wanted all along. Along with over 400 items, different endings, a number of different playable characters, and secrets that are worth trying crazy things to find make this game a blast through-and-through.

Imagine The Legend of Zelda, but take out the world map, and you complete dungeon after dungeon. This is the core gameplay of BoIR. You may see the term roguelike a lot in reviews, and this solidifies the game. Pickups, enemy drops, and each level is entirely random. Some games you'll die in the second room, others will leave you playing hard to the final boss. You will find the game unforgiving and death is permanent, though your unlocks are not. If you die, you start back over on a new run. Death is unforgiving, but each run is typically no longer than an hour at the absolute most.

The graphics continue the style of BOI allowing a filter to keep it foggy and pixelated or clear and sharp, depending on your liking. The environment isn't as engaging as BoI, but it is appropriate to the game. It is a dark game, fighting demons, angels, spewing blood, and destroying piles of dung. Definitely not your average game, but still very much the style that BoI players have come to love.

I have both the PC and PS4 version, though I haven't noticed any differences except that the controller makes the game slightly more difficult. I have begun opting for using X, O, Square, Triangle for shooting rather than both sticks. With some item synergies, you may find that tapping to shoot is easier, but tiring, and forget about swinging the stick to shoot in those situations. This game is mostly enjoyed on a keyboard, in my opinion.

Beyond that, Rebirth took some great steps in terms of item synergies. In the old game, you often found yourself overlapping items rendering them useless, but this does a much better job of incorporating different bonuses to Isaac. A welcome touch.

This game can be replayed over and over, and should be, for alternate endings, new items, and a host of players with different pros and cons (Cain being my favorite). The new co-op option is small but welcome, allowing new players to be recruited at the cost of a heart, and though they can fly, Player 1 is still in complete control of the game. This could be helped out by a few different tweaks, but it is still fun to throw your buddy a controller and play through. There were some glitches with this, players disappearing but still able to shoot and live, but other than that, I have had great playthroughs with almost no hiccups, though I have noticed some graphics stuttering from time to time, but that seemed more attributed to behind-the-scenes. It did not seem like this was due to screen clutter or bullet hell and I found the game very smooth overall.

Replayability is the best thing that BoIR has going for it. Death is permanent but short, and picking up again is always beneficial. Many items are unlocked by what seems to be external counters, spending x amount at slot machines or blood banks, so even if you can't see unlock counters, you are always benefitting from a playthrough. There is also a great new mechanic in the form of a playable character with completely random, but balanced, starting loadouts and stats, but you can only play as this character for each time you beat the game. Though I'm not sure the exact benefits of this, I know that it will unlock some cool features.

This game is great, addicting, and simple-but-fun. Without the need for connectivity, this is a great fallback game when your internet is down or when you just want to play a good old-fashioned side-scroller. I have a blast playing every time.

As for the playstation version, it plays like a twin-stick shooter, but you can use the DPad and the shape buttons to move and shoot, and it feels quite nice, actually. The game is a rogue-like game, meaning that if you die, you lose everything and it gets more tense the deeper you go. you go from fighting a piece of poop to fighting Satan himself. As mentioned before, there's a lot of new items. some of these items has cool effects, while others are just a simple stat up. There's a total of 9 characters, two of which are revealed later on. you start out with the main protagonist, Isaac, running from room to room, filled with enemies, spikes, rocks and pits. On the way, you unlock more and more of the game, for example, getting 55 cents will unlock Cain. The game is really hard, so it takes a lot of practice to even kill the first* final boss (*there's more final bosses to come by), and it feels so rewarding to finally beat the game, all those moments where you nearly die and be so lucky that your enemy died from the bomb that you placed down. If i where to recommend this, give it like three runs and see if you like it. it is worth your time and money. Expand

The graphics are polished up (albeit in stylized 16bit form), and the move away from flash seems to have solved some of the rare game disrupting issues of the original. I came into this game not expecting game of the year quality just a little fun to past the time and be optimistic with a newer style of game. It certainly did surprise me the amount of enjoyment I got from such a simple concept, this was due to random changes in map and abilities acquired with every single play through.

My first couple of games I couldn't really grasp what to do due to minimal instructions set by the game, but I guess that led to mystery as an overall. The certain aspects I enjoyed was the different variety of boss battles as I thought that a boss was advocated to certain level etc. I love the different array of powers also even if some are rendered useless its like a lucky dip you have no clue what is until you pick it up. It took me over 3 hours to complete my first play through due to trial and error and the certain difficulty the game possessed, as the enemies get progressively harder each level.

I rated this game an 8, which I seem is a fair rating. As i'm basing it on a rating I would give it if I purchased the full game for people who didn't get it for free in the month of November 2014. Things I found tedious wasn't really a game mechanic but the luck system they implemented, by that I mean finding a level with a tinted rock (stones that contain items) and not having any bombs or explosions to get it, usually on the first level. One more thing but this is technically a positive; but when I unlocked Azazel I never needed to use any other character because he was so overpowered (You'll understand once you use him)

Defiantly a game worth purchasing especially because its FREE! It's a game that reminds of games of the past and how the gaming used to be before the commercial mainstream FPS's etc. overall this game is epic and I thoroughly enjoy playing it as something different

I just cannot get into this style of game. I played better games than this 20+ years ago. Today, this game ought to come in a cereal box; there are mobile apps with more depth and better gameplay. I don't even know if 2D dodge and shoot should be called gameplay anymore.

I'm just gonna say this: rebirth is better than the original in every way, item's graphics, music and room's.
There are way more item's this time around in rebirth than there is in the original, the graphics are far improved with a very cool pixelated style, the music is chilling down to the bone and the room's are fresher than they have ever been with the giant sized room's. Fantastic game!

By contrast, the game is incredibly fun with the addition of new items, enemies, bosses, rooms, and even a whole new floor. The original game has been greatly expanded within a new engine and, while I generally disapprove of pixel art, the graphics are adequate for the scope of the game. For me this was a day one purchase, this game is definitely capable of providing 500 hours of gameplay.

The twin stick on the Dualshock 4 made it much more accessible for me). I picked Rebirth up with my PS Plus subscription the same night I bought my PS4, and I have to say, definitely worth it.

The game is everything you liked about the original, plus more. Same solid arcade gameplay, same grotesquely adorable enemies, same punishing difficulty (although now there's a Normal and a Hard, for those of you that aren't quite so masochistic). I personally thought it was actually easier than the original game, but that may have been because I was playing on normal. If you're experienced with the original BoI, I'd go straight for Hard mode. The new items I encountered were all really cool, especially the zodiac symbol items I found. I didn't find many new enemies, but the ones I did find were stellar additions to the gameplay (the spiders that crawl on the walls and shoot at you were my "favorites"). I noticed that the character selection screen had been updated with the req's for unlocking each character, something the original didn't have (I don't think?). Die hards will probably chafe at anything that makes the game easier or less obtuse, but I had no problem with it.

My only real complaint was the graphics. I have no problem whatsoever with old-style pixels, but compared to the super clean spritework of the original, it just looks...bad. I understand this was Ed's desire, as he didn't like the old artwork, but when you play Rebirth on a big HDTV the pixels just stand out way too much. Easily forgiven, though, when taken with the rest of the game's strengths.

Overall, an excellent game. It's a must-have if you played the original, and I'd certainly recommend it to gamers who favor arcade style gameplay and who want a challenge.

The Binding of Isaac is a sick game, a horrific game full of stomach churning moments that will, more than once, make you double take on whatever had just happened. It's grotesque and horrific, and it does it so very well.

The story is similar to the tale in the bible of Isaac being bound and almost sacrificed by his father in the name of God, but with a more modern take and a twisted extension.

The game itself is a dungeon crawler very reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda, just a lot more grotesque. The game will have you traversing between various rooms with their own little sick surprises or, occasionally, an item that will allow you along your way. I could go into detail about each room, each item, each creature...but that would defeat the object of the game entirely.

I personally found that the game was meant as less of a challenge (although you'll get a lot of that, don't worry) and more of a kind of venture to investigate a disturbed world, to discover different secrets and hideous monsters and to uncover the best kind of strategies to pass through the game, taking the least amount of damage possible.

I also find that the game is very luck based; if you don't get a great seed or a decent item towards the beginning, you may find yourself struggling a great deal. Fortunately, the game does allow you to view the seed code so that you may travel the same dungeon once again. I doubt the items will be generated in the same fashion (I haven't yet used the seed codes yet) but it may be worth it just to know where you're going and what you're doing.

There are many different items, and you can review each one of them through several pages filled with each that you have come across. There are also numerous characters, but again, to go in depth about each would be to destroy the entire purpose of the game.

Overall, it's a great challenge and a fun little adventure through a twisted universe. There are some drawbacks; playing the game through numerous times will eventually become quite tiresome, and this is required if you want to see the numerous endings that the game has to offer (not to mention that you will likely not make it through the first time anyway). You will see the same rooms numerous times with each randomly generated dungeon, but this isn't strictly a bad thing as such although it does get a little tedious.

It's very much a pick up and play, and this is exactly what I recommend people doing, although I struggle to think that the game is worth the £11 that it costs on the store (it was recently free for PS+, so I picked it up there).

A fun little adventure, and a nightmarish one at that, well deserving of an 8/10.

The controls are basic Left stick to move and Right stick to shoot you can only shoot in 4 directions up down left and right (you can also use the X, square, triangle and circle in relation to which direction to shoot) but don't let that fool you this game wants you dead at first it seems easy but as you go deeper into Isaac's hell it will stop at nothing to kill you, very much like the many rouge likes before it you have to grind through the deaths to become good, I have played for many hours and I still die more times than I win but when you do the victory is all the more sweeter for it.

There are tons of items to collect, hidden rooms and power ups to collect each play through has different items in different places each power up changes the way Isaac looks (in one play through Isaac was wearing mums underwear, moms heels and a ginger wig while the next I looked like the devil) sometimes the combinations over write each other but you still keep the benefits of the power ups. You collect pills from time to time these are one use items that give you benefits or negative effects but each play through the effects are switch so you never know what will happen you take the pill. There are more items that change how you play but I'll bore you no longer with descriptions of the items.

Lastly the graphics are good not fantastic but the drawing are great you can quickly identify what you are fighting at a quick glance which can effect your approach to the room, now the atmosphere is the best i have come across, I didn't know much about this game i saw a few screen shots early on and thought it doesn't look special but upon playing I found a delightfully dark undertone to the whole game, it might look childish on the surface but once you start the game even the short intro just shows how dark the game is if you look beyond the drawings and take the atmosphere in you'll see a dark twisted world that begs to be explored.

Simple, fluent controls stay simple until you happen upon one item that changes your whole play style, perhaps for the better or perhaps to your chagrin. I have scrapped a few runs from picking up items I just didn't want to deal with, but when you hit that sweet loadout and you're mowing things down like the tortured floating head of an angry god, this game can't be beat for triumphant satisfaction.

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is a very big suprise for me. I expected to play a simply game but when i play, I became open-mouthed. TBOIR is a very good rogue like game, very addictive and funny. It looks great, also it have local coop, and hundreds of items to explore. A very real diamond for your consoles and Pc's that you can't left it forgotten

Other than that, it's one of the best games I've ever played in my entire life (been playing video games since the 80's.) Expand

Possibly my favorite Indie game of all time. The atmosphere is grim, the game is highly addictive, the game is brutal and just pure fun. Plus the game is highly replayable.

Adicción hecha videojuego, una vez empiezas a jugar a este juego, no puedes parar. Divertido, estética tremenda y con una dificultad que reta. Lo tiene prácticamente todo.

This is all backed up by a rather strange story and game is heavily influenced by bible mythos though twisting and bending it for it's own purpose.

You go through different floors, picking different items that you have no idea what they do. Things get unlocked, paths of the game change. You beat one boss, another one gets unlocked. Whole floors get unlocked even. But with every play you learn something new - how to fight a certain boss, what a certain item does and how to find things you had no idea existed just a few plays ago. And it's so addictive.

Some runs are hard and frustrating, other with a right combination of items become a walk in the park and it's so enjoyable. Items, and there is a lot of them, synergies with one another creating great combos and combinations.

The replay value of this game is just mind boggling. And the community around the game is both great and large. Definitely recommend that game as it's the best in this category.

A fantastic, deep, difficult, and time consuming game. It really brings me back to those feelings of frustration I had playing these kinds of games as a kid. It's a game that has be coming back two years post-release. Everything from the gameplay to the soundtrack are top notch.

I've lost hours in this game from the moment I got it. This is a rogue like done 100% correctly. Should you get this game you will be surprised at the amount of depth in this game. You will have lucky runs, you will have unlucky runs and you will hit walls where you die 15 times in a row.

Update they finally fixed there **** meaning i can rate this game a solid 10

No support for PS4 in 3 years. Still no trophy fixes or any fixes at al SHAME ON THE DEVELOPERS would have giving it a 10 otherwise.

Awesome little time filler with countless combinations in terms of power ups and levels. It might be a bit offensive to some but you can never please everyone all the time. The levels are randomly generated as well as the loot so it makes for some very interesting and constantly different play through.

One gripe is not having a clue what some of the items do, as it doesn't usually say in-game - I ended up downloading an unofficial app to look up items and understand how to use them.

Also, it can be heavily luck-based, as one run can have you feeling god-like powerful, while the next can have you struggling with basic enemies, completely dependant on the items dropped. However this I suppose can be expected from a procedurally-generated rogue-like game.

Definitely recommended to pick up, and as good as the base game is, if you also pick up the Afterbirth+ expansion, or buy the complete edition available, this only makes it even better, with tons and tons more items, enemies, bosses and more.

Very unique. Simple, but unique. Very diverse and an extremely good enemy/boss design. The items are also superb, and I have easily sunken hundreds of hours into this game.

As someone who has played probably 200-300+ (there's no way to check in-game, sadly), this is probably the best top-down rogue-like dungeon shooter you are probably ever going to play. Completing a single run can be difficult, but completing two separate runs without ever being hit (as I had to do, now this is much easier due to a change to the character's starting items) is another story. As someone who has played probably 200-300+ (there's no way to check in-game, sadly), this is probably the best top-down rogue-like dungeon shooter you are probably ever going to play. My stats say that I have completed the game approx. 150 times, but I have only COMPLETED the game once. Unlocking and picking up ever active/passive item/trinket (~340 total), unlocking all the secrets (~270), and completing all 20 challenges to earn the "Real Platinum God" trophy was a journey filled with so many different emotions that I was happy to continue until its conclusion. Just like with the Dark Souls games and many other cult classics as this, many players will be turned off by the difficulty and high learning curve, however, those willing to invest some effort (and time) into the game will be the ones who tell you that there is tons hidden lore and sense of accomplishment experience within. Binding of Isaac: Rebirth is by far my favorite indie game of all time and also the finest, most unique Rogue-like game I ever had the pleasure to play. Make no mistake about this game. It might look like a silly and innocent game but the rabbit hole stretches deep and there is a lot about this gem than meets the eye.

I will start by speaking about the gameplay. The core mechanics are quite simple and the game while challenging seems pretty easy to follow, but soon enough you will get your way blocked by secrets and hidden features you have to figure out by yourself. The RNG and all the items make for some unique and diverse runs so the game can remain interesting even after 300 hours of gameplay. My main issue about the Binding of Isaac is just its randomness. While this is one of its greatest assets it also proves to be a double-edged sword at times as one run can get ruined by extreme unluck or lack of keys/bombs, etc. There is a lot of different characters each with their own level of challenge and unlockables and on the PC version, you can even extend that list with countless modded characters.

Now we're talking about Binding of Isaac's major strength in my opinion and what makes it such a distinctive game compared to other Rogue-like games. BoI does not only deliver one of the most addictive gameplay in the genre but it also delivers a very intriguing and vague story the player can try to figure out. There are many theories and it all ties to religion. The game that at first looks silly and even innocent is actually a game with important themes and a ton of religious symbolism. By the end of the story, it's up to the player to interpret what truly happened to Isaac and his family. One thing is certain, be the gameplay or the vague yet effective visual story-telling, Binding of Isaac is a game that won't leave your memory.

I am absolutely addicted to this game. It's been so satisfying to learn how all the items work and try new tactics. Pretty difficult to learn at the beginning but so addictive, that you won't even notice playing it for hundreds of hours. Randomized levels, great variety of opponents and countless items combinations make this game an endless experience. Totally a must-play!

This game is a masterpiece. It's kinda hard but if you put a few hours into it you WILL get addicted. It is the KING of Rouge-likes and it's really fun.
If you have around 15 bucks to spare this is hella worth it.
Also a short tip: Play the game until you get experienced before you buy the DLC's. Especially before you buy Repentance because this **** hard. Also another Tip before

The Binding of Isaac pulls off everything it tries to do, and very well. The story is interesting, the gameplay fantastic, and the art and music are wonderful as well. The only things I found wrong with the game were that the bosses were repetitive and the challenge mode was lacking fun.
