I was very disappointed by this game: I didn't expect GTA levels of detail but at least expected more fun from a gangster based free roaming game....you know, like Saints Row. Despite being called "Definitive Edition" it feels lackluster and even with the DLC episodes cleared, I have a big sense of emptiness inside as if something was missing.

Let's start with the story: the plot is revolved around Wei Shen who's an undercover cop who's a double agent for the triad and has to rise in ranks to take out the big ones...and that's the deal really. You get to do many missions but I honestly can't even remember half of them, because not many were important for the main plot: a lot of fluff missions where nothing happened and all I did was to steal crap for no reason but to get more money.

It doesn't help that the characters are bad too: the game tries to give a sort of conflict within Wei Shen, to choose between triads and cop, but the reality is that it never really shows its full effects: Shen always does his job like normal and whenever he said something, nothing really happened anyway. His attachment for the Triad is the same for the cops: he doesn't care, so why should I? Even when he said his best friend - HIS BEST **** FRIEND - that he will not leave him behind, all he did was...leaving him behind. Just what the ****

And top it all of, even the secondary stuff like dating girls is so underplayed it's amazing: all they serve is to allow you to check extra on the map and that's it. You cannot date them a second time.

Okay, nevermind the story: this game is all about fun, so is the game fun? Honestly no, I was really bored after doing the tenth same mission about fighting enemies and chasing thugs. Most of the missions are quite literally the same deal, whether cop or not, and even in the DLC, they didn't really try harder. More to that later.

What saddens me is that the game is big, there are MANY activities to do, from cop jobs to racing, and It never EVER changed: it was the same thing all over with almost no difference it was mind-numbing. It doesn't help that the fight is also repetitive: just press one button and do a basic combo to kill most enemies while triangle is countering. it's easy at least and you can do environmental kills, but that's it. Also, gunplay is soooooo bad and underwhelming - and so easy to do: just vault over a cover and kill enemies: infinite slow mo!

And to top all of this, the DLC missions are even more underwhelming! I liked the nightmare on north point the most but because at least they gave us new enemies and I liked the new face meter which allowed some neat animations. But once again it's all the same thing: kill enemies to death.

The second DLC is even worse because it felt more like an additional case for the main game...but the main game case is actually better! Just...just disappointing, that's all I can say.

So I said how the game is boring but hey, it's still a big game right? It can't be so bad...except that I finished the main game in about 20 hours and about 2 hours for each DLC to complete...no I didn't rush, in fact I took my time and only had to resort to maps online because I couldn't find some places on my own, but in less than 30 hours the game was over for me (I platinum it in 29 hours, it's that short).

It's a real shame, it's all I can say: I wish the game to be bigger, to expand more, but I feel that it was rushed because everything is barebone developed: characters come and go and the story has only a few points that make any sense, while the rest is fluff. Add an underwhelming world with boring missions - and I didn't mention the many bugs I had, but no crashes at least - you get a game that is just "okay". It's neither good or bad, but not even mediocre or above average: this game is okay.

Do I recommend it? On discount, yes, without a discount...get Saints Row instead.
At least It didn't bore me!

The game has not the best of scenarios, full of clichés and well predictable plot twists, the characters are not the most charismatic, but the story develops in a clear and objective way, making it even catchy at some times

With a city not as big, but as alive as in GTA (it is impossible not to compare), the game rarely leaves you with nothing to do, even when you are not following the main history. there are races, missions to clear a specific area of criminal activity, working as police or even just collect hidden boxes or find specific spots to improve your character.

The gameplay can seem a bit confusing at first, especially while driving, but that's all about adaptation and after some time the game starts to flow and drive passes from complicated task to the most fun part of the game.

Fights are mostly without guns, and actually unarmed fighting is much more fun. Trough the game you learn more new interesting moves, but when with guns, this is another negative point of the game. The controls do not always respect, sometimes you shoot and shoot just does not come out, and the aim is a bit confusing. But this does not hinder the experience with the game.

In conclusion, Sleeping Dogs is a pleasant surprise in ps4, the extra content make the game even more complete, and guaranteed many hours of fun.

Very good game, the dlc were fun and so was the mission , I know that it doesn’t need to be remastered but playing it again on PS4 is quite enjoyable for example good fight sequence , awesome gun play , good story, the world is well crafted my only problem was the some of the repetitive side missions. Also wei is a very likeable character and there is a lot of Easter eggs around the world.

I love the story, a dark and brutal foray into the untraveled in video games East. The Hong Kong underworld complete with sex trafficking, drugs, triads and corruption is fantastic. The combat is awesome and is a more complex version than what the recent Arkham games offer complete with upgrades. It takes a while to get to grips with controlling vehicles, once you do however it has a more "Action Movie" feel to it than other games of this genre. Over all the game itself is terrific, I'd give it a 9/10

This is where it lets itself down, yes it has all the DLC and such but as far as a visual and audio overhaul its barely had one. All they have really done is made everything shiny and glisten. The neon has a bit more image flare and its a bit more higher resolution but that's about it. When it rains it looks really good but my major gripe is how empty Hong Kong is. Aesthetically the game is abandoned and sparsely populated, the city simply isn't alive enough. The pedestrians have about 7>10 possibilities of things they can say and there aren't enough of them. Sometimes there are literally zero vehicles on the road. To me this is not a next-gen overhaul. It is more fitting of a past gen GOTY re-release.

Summarizing, Sleeping Dogs is a fantastic action game and it is very underappreciated. However as far as remasters and definitive editions go this is a flop. Taking into consideration a certain other open world crime game which was remastered into practically a brand new game *cough, cough* GTAV *cough* the remastering of Sleeping Dogs is pretty sub-par.

The story is well-constructed, and despite being short and sometimes too simple, it is enjoyable. Main protagonist Wei Shen's situation is delicate and throughout the story we understand why. Things that were less fun to me were the side quests and more generally most of the secondary content.

Gameplay-wise, the main strength of the game is the combat system. It may not be as developed as a Batman Arkham game, but it's nevertheless really good for such a GTA-like type of game. Wei Shen is a master of martial arts and the game demonstrates that perfectly through that fighting system. The handling of cars is not the best I've seen in an open-world despite being good enough to enjoy driving in the game. The size of the map is obviously not as big as today's open-worlds standards, but it's good enough to support what the game has to offer.

I'm very happy this game exists and I'm sad to see that the studio closed because I would really love to see Sleeping Dogs 2 coming! Give this game a try, it's low priced enough nowadays to make it worth it.

—Interesting premise and setting. It's very rare to see games made about Hong Kong and the triads, I feel the overall concept and premise was extremely interesting and compelling. The first few opening hours and missions are also very fun and immersive as you try to work your way up the ladder and gather more information.

—Great overall gameplay. It easily competes or even beats other series like Saints Row and GTA in the gameplay alone. From the aforementioned hand to hand combat to the chase sequences to the smaller activities and missions littered around the world. There is a wealth of side-activities and collectibles here, will easily lend you a good 6-8 hours on them alone.

    Cons:
—Combat gets extremely repetitive after a while. There are really no new moves that you can learn later on in the game, you can just upgrade your current moves to do more damage. The striking just revolves around single button presses. By about 2/3rds into the game, You're gonna be actively trying to avoid hand-to-hand fights because of how repetitive it is.

—The game is just too easy. You can single-handedly annihilate 15-20 people all by yourself, at least in hand to hand combat.

—The storytelling and pacing drop completely about halfway through the game. Wei Shen is an interesting character but all his internal conflicts and dilemmas literally lead nowhere and the actual storytelling just turns bad. Missions get extremely repetitive and even mindless after a while.

—The world is just shallow. This is the biggest problem with the game. There is a wealth of side-activities to do but it just lacks depth. There are no alternate martial arts you can learn or anything. You can't even buy **** guns in the game. Everything gets extremely stale after you've done your first 4-5 missions of each type. Racing also just devolves into a guessing game as all your opponents have inhuman turning speed with 0 weight to their cars, easily speeding past you if you bump into a tiny pebble on the side of the road which brings you to a screeching halt.

Everything just feels cheap and average. Even with extremely interesting missions where you're supposed to sneak into a hospital or crime scene under cover and collect info, It just feels half-assed and cheap. The RPG elements in this game are just not up to par.

In conclusion, If you're a die-hard martial artist or kung-fu flick addict like me then buy the game on a discount. The DLC missions offer a lot of great and interesting sequences with more elaborate stories and details but outside of that, everything is just slightly above average.

But does that equal a better game and something fans of the series should purchase? No but there are a few caveats to mention.
Sleeping Dogs was one of the best games of 2012 and one of the best non-GTA sandbox games ever to have been made with its great story, wonderful acting by a ton of celebrities, and a focus on melee combat never before seen in a sandbox game. But the game was released in 2012 and is now over 2 years old, an eternity in the gaming world. The remastered version does little beyond touching up the graphics (just barely....) and adding all the DLC into the mix on one disc. It's a decent package but leaves alot to be desired.
First of all, the graphical upgrade is beyond minimal. While the character models for the main Cantonese people are good, anyone of another race look beyond awful. The world doesn't look great and you can tell there was very little done beyond the main character models, but even those don't look that good. For a remastered version and a game on the PS4, this game look terrible. Other remastered games for these new next gen consoles have been pretty to look at, while this game does not. It's pretty sad honestly.
But this is a great game from the last generation and you're doing yourself an injustice by not playing it. Everything about the game is fun and is about as original as a sandbox game can really get honestly. There are some minor gripes that remain from the original game but they are minor compared to the whole game. I have always loved this game but I cannot justify paying 60 dollars for this game when it's about as bare bones as you can get for a remastered game. If this game was around 40 dollars, it would be highly recommended from me. But considering you can get this game for less than 20 dollars on last gen systems if you look hard enough, I cannot recommend this game as it currently stands. That doesn't mean it's a bad game but that there are easier ways to go about getting it.

It very easy to learn very button mashing. Much like (Arkham batman games, Madmax, and Shadow of Mordor) but very very bad. What makes it bad is the timing of the prompts and aiming. It is also very boring combat. Driving sucks compared to Watch Dogs & GTA (granted Watch Dogs in considered next gen). This is an "open world" game a VERY dead boring, skeleton of an open world. This game just doesn't hold up well at all. Why did they make a "Definitive Edition" of this game in the first place? Nothing really looks all that better. Yes you get the "DLC" with it but IF you must really have to play this game Please don't pay more then $20 for this. Expand

Second thing is the melee fighting mechanics, which are the whole core of the game as the weapons are truly scarce. The only real strategy that works in a fight is to (a) grap smaller opponents, beat them up, run away, (b) kick bigger opponents once, run away, (c) wait for the guy with a knife to strike, counter and hope none of the others are too close, run away. I think the countering system is essentially broken, where even if your reaction time is on spot, the character just does nothing to avoid damage. Best just to run in circles and grab, grab, grab.

Driving is frustrating as hell, and it's almost impossible to get full points on cop missions due to this. Also, the ramming? Why do something this cartoonish in an otherwise "realistic" game.... Just ridiculous.

I give props to this game for the story though, and the dossiers on the main characters are actually well written and entertaining.

Apart from the glitches and bugs, the game's mechanics are way worse than expected. The parkour mechanics are very scripted and you can feel it. The parkouring is also inconsistent. In some places The player can wall-climb a 4 meter wall, but when you try to reach a ledge that is literally in your arms reach the game doesn't give you the prompt to press X and climb it. That is a huge hindrance when running around and for example chasing someone or trying to move around quickly.
The combat system is also extremely boring. The combat system works in a single-combat against an evenly matched opponent. But single-combats are extremely rare in this game. Most fights you encounter are against 5-20 goons by yourself. You can learn new moves when the game progresses, but you can't use the moves when you are surrounded by 5 opponents. Only thing you need to do in a combat in this game is to use the triangle button to counter. Sometimes the game doesn't even allow you to do anything else. In one mission I had to beat 30 opponents, by myself and the opponents were immune to normal attacks. Only way you could proceed was to counter their every single strike. Talk about boring playing experience when all you have to do is press triangle when the game tells you to do so.
And then there are the numerous glitches and bugs. I have had to quit the game multiple times. Examples: my character doesn't respond to the sticks and I can't move him around anymore. My opponent whom I have to kill or detain is stuck between a car and a wall, etc. The latest glitch I encountered was when I was playing just a few minutes ago. The game started to make a constant and extremely loud machine gun noise. And no, the problem wasn't in my headphones. I had to quit the game, but after restarting, the same thing happened even sooner this time.
Good things about the game are it's relatively good story, although the gameplay in the missions is too repetitive. And that Hong Kong is a pretty place when it's raining. But naturally those 2 things can't save the game. Avoid at all cost.

The controls are less responsive, and some of the same glitches and bugs seen in the ps3 version are back and causing havoc.

Basically, all the game got that you could consider a improvement, is the particle system, also known as more amount of blood.
The game isn't as improved as they claimed they have done.

The atmosphere is perfect. but the main issue of the game is hard kung fu missions. they are hard and boring sometimes. and there is no skip button like rockstar games. If the combats were more fun it would be best sandbox game . but hard combats make you stuck in some missions for long hours.

Enemies respawn litterally one second after you dispatch them. Game tells you to throw them in to the energy, yet there is no throw button. First of all: The setting is fantastic and so intense. Hong Kong is where East and West meet, a place of cultural intertwining and has so much potential for games and interesting stories. The city was perfectly created by the devs and I really had the feeling to actually drive through the city. The graphics were also somewhere between ok and fantastic, especially at night, when driving through foggy rainy weather.

Then the story: For me this story was one of the best game stories ever. You had this really sympathetic character Wei Shen and you could follow his development and changes from a righteous police officer to a corrupt cop. Observing him on his way was fantastic and the overall premises of the story caught me way more than any GTA stories which are more or less about getting rich. This is not to say GTA 5 is a bad game. But the underlying premise of sleeping dogs is way more humanistic and I found that more fascinating

And last but not least, the amazing fighting system and the feeling of substantial progression. At the beginning of the game, the fights are arduous and hard, because you only know the basics but in the endgame when you mastered the fundamentals plus upgraded your character it's a blast.

    Graphic - very outdated
The world - lifeless, not as good as other AAA games.
Main Story - mediocre at best, I mean, this kind of plot that police becomes a spy to get into the criminal gangs is happened everywhere in action movie. Boring. The pace is slow too.
    Sidequests - Nothing worth mentioned.
Gameplay - still below average in my opinion. Coming from someone who has play Yakuza series, Barehanded fighting is not nothing special at all. Other things are very average.
Music - below average for AAA games. No music that catched my ears.

In conclusion, if I rate 5/10, that means the game has all aspect average with no strength, but for Sleeping dog, most aspect are below average with no any strength to compete with other AAA games at all so I had to rate 4/10. I played the game for several hours then had no motivation to continue. If you want to play a game that has better street fighting and much much better story writing, I strongly suggest Yakuza 0. If you want openworld AAA games, there are ton of them out there. Sleeping dogs is not worth any of your money, unless you have so much free time that you finished all of great AAA games, then maybe 10 bucks for this game, but don't expect anything good here.

It is the story of Wei Shen who returns to his birthplace in Hongkong to infiltrate the Triad organization Sun On Yee as undercover cop. All before him were discovered easily and died in gruesome ways. You will experience his struggles and challenges as there are internal and external enemies as he has to juggle between his two identities and his past. Like I said the game shines from its setting, story and characters. The twist are all excellent and it often plays with expectations. I must also admit that they use some tropes or staples of the genre. Some peoples complain it was cliche and foreseeable. I say while it is not entirely wrong there are themes you have to use and they did their best here to make them feel awesome. The characters are some of the best I have seen in a game of this type. Believable with flaws and relatable motives or agendas. There are of cause many side quests like police investigations, races, (backyard) fight clubs were you can acquire classic costumes from legendary martial arts movies and some gambling games. The collectibles are done better than in most games. They give you benefits like an increased health-bar, new moves from a Dojo or plain money. It has a leveling up system with unlockable abilities. There are 3 trees that are related to your police or Triad progress and 1 for your martial arts that is connected to a collectible. The battle system for martial arts is excellent. Easy to learn with a lot to master. It is weaker for guns. The graphic is acceptable but certainly nothing for graphic fetishists. The soundtrack is really good and you have multiple radio stations with real live tracks. The DLC is a good addition but relatively short. “Nightmare in Northpoint” adds supernatural elements to the mix. Short but excellent. “The Zodiac Tournament” is a homage to old martial arts movie including a movie intro and graphic overhaul to look like a 70ties Hongkong martial arts movie (or 80ties?). “Year of the Snake” was buggy for me. Corrupted all save files and it was not good enough to finish it in one sitting (Maybe a bit biased because I had already another game I want to try). Overall this is a great game but maybe too old to compete. Test it beforehand because I already said I have too much nostalgia googles. Also a tip: Complete the optional dates. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Sleeping Dogs was released in the early 2010s, it was not easy to create an action-adventure game with an open world component, having top games like GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption or Far Cry 3 around: the risk was to create a game that was too derivative or watered down in that component and in a competitive sector. But no worries, because Sleeping Dogs effectively averted this risk.

Wei Shen, a Hong Kong-born American police officer, is tasked to infiltrate Hongkongese mafia triad, Sun On Yee (based on the real-life Sun Yee On triad). Slowly, within the spiral of violence made of intrigues of power and internal and external conflicts within the organisation which will cost his friends' lives, Shen is brought back to the world he grew up and which begins to conflict with his job as an undercover cop as he climbs the triad's ranks. The triad is a family that no one would really want to live in, yet Shen cannot shed his ties with it and cannot help but feel himself at home inside it. "Once a thief, always a thief"? Maybe, but I am quite convinced that Shen is still more a cop than a criminal, although this may be open to some interpretation by the end of the story. It's a violent, mature, both well written and interpreted plot.

Sleeping Dogs' open world design is great. Hong Kong is recreated in all its authenticity and charm, vibrant and alive in its unique hybrid culture of East and West which makes up its distinct identity, as professional reviewers also noted. There's a good number of side activities and missions like officer Teng's "Cases" or "Drug Busts" and "Cop Jobs"; the latter I think should have been repeatable without limit at will, because they are really fun. Consuming food and drink from street vendors or grocery stores can grant temporary bonuses such as increased damage in combat. The game features interesting ideas not seen in more mainstream GTA-like games, such as the ability to automatically ram a vehicle (analogue stick + square button) and get it off the road, or the ability to jump from a moving vehicle to another, both cars and motorcycles. In this regard, the driving system is pretty well done, fun and its physics work properly; not the same as GTA IV, but clearly inspired by it. Like other games of its kind, there's a vast choice of vehicles, outfits and weapons, both melee and firearms; the latter are more rare to get as the game's combat is mostly focused on hand-to-hand and melee weapons, with Shen (the player) being able to increase his skills via a basic two-branched skill tree which increases with "Triad XPs", by performing violent actions such as lethal kills. Another skill tree, which increases with "Police XPs" by avoiding property damage or civilian casualties during missions, provides bonuses like increased firearms damage. "Face XPs" give Shen other bonuses like discounts for shopping or increasing regenerative effects of meals. Regarding combat, I would have preferred a more balanced mix between hand-to-hand combat and firearms combat: the shooting and cover system is quite rudimentary, yet it works well and slow motion aiming with guns while vaulting from cover makes everything much more fun but guns shootings happen too infrequently and only some last the right amount of time. Also, hand-to-hand combat, at least in the first tens of hours of play, can be challenging since Shen is weaker and often outnumbered and only the acquisition of further skills can make it more enjoyable, along with a little practice. Environmental kills add variety and are pretty fun as well.

The game is graphically almost a decade old but is still visually good-looking and the realisation of in-game Hong Kong returns a notable impact and looks really alive. I've never played the old PS3 version, but the improvements in this Definitive Edition seem significant, from visual comparisons, and help the game stay visually pleasing.

Sleeping Dogs is a game that is as similar to others of its genre as it is unique. It's gone a bit under the radar back in the early 2010s but it's very recommended for open world action-adventure lovers: good storyline, good gameplay, vibrant different and fascinating setting. I bought this game remastered in 2020 for 5 bucks, with the two expansions, and I have to say that this is the f**king best open world game that I played in years, it's in my top 5 best games of all time. I expected nothing and I had everything, wonderful story, characters, open world, design, and the expansions are superbs. This game is a must to have.

This is quite a decent game I think. It’s not as good as GTA V IMO but still quite a solid game. Summarising, I’d call this game a bit of mixture between GTA and Batman Arkham series; I mean in terms of gameplay. The mission structure, driving etc. resembles to GTA whereas the combat reminds me of batman; yes you can use firearms but there is an obvious stress in marcial arts.

I think pretty much anything is good about this game. The graphics are decent, the city looks really good and as a guy that has been in HK, I’ll say it looks quite a bit like the real one, so I think the setting is really good. Gameplay is smooth and good, it is just nice to play. The story line is nothing out of the ordinary, and although not overly surprising it works quite well. I mean it’s a classic undercover cop/mafia story with likeable characters, so if you like that kind of thing then you’ll be all right with it.

Bad things!, well… I don’t think there are bad things itself in this game, it is quite well made. However, there are a couple of things that, IMO, could be better. One of them is the music, I think it works well with the setting (music in Chinese etc.), but I don’t think it’s particularly good and feels quite homogenous. GTA V, for example, has an awesome selection of music and there are also other things, like the crazy radio programs than help with the setting; I kind of miss the equivalent in sleeping dogs. Also, as I mentioned above, the map is quite well made in terms of detail and credibility, but it could have been a bit bigger and maybe a bit more different in the different areas. It’s all city areas that are a bit different between them but not too much (with the exception of the financial quarter), why not a bit of city outskirts? bit of countryside or something.

Anyway, overall this is quite a good game and I would definitely recommend it to the people that like this kind of game, just avoid comparisons and you’ll see that this is quite a great game.

Sleeping Dogs is a fun GTA clone. The 2 main differences between Sleeping Dogs and GTA are the setting and the gameplay style. The game takes place in Hong Kong and plays as a brawler instead of a 3rd person shooter (in fact even when you get a gun it's bad and unwieldy IIRC, so you'd better stick with hand-to-hand combat). Sleeping Dogs is very close to a Yakuza open world game if there ever was one. Driving around with a motorcycle or a car is OK, and there are many emergent gameplay scenarios like robberies or assaults to deal with. Sleeping Dogs has got a relatively good story and character development, but technologically the game wasn't cutting edge even when it launched back in 2012 and today it looks archaic. Still it's a good game for solo players, but there is no online mode of any kind. The Definitive Edition includes all the DLCs. I definitely recommend Sleeping Dogs to everyone interested in open world games, especially since nowadays it's super cheap. Just don't expect it to be on the same level as a Rockstar game. Too bad a sequel never happened. Expand

Much better fighting than most games of the same genre. Your outfit actually affects the style you use. One of those available even has you fighting as a Drunken Boxer!

And a cameo by Emma Stone!

And because it's (very) often on sale for $5, I'd say this could be the best value of any game on the market. Oh and bonus: no micro-transactions whatsoever.

I enjoyed True Crime at the time but not now, and it seems to the same for Sleeping Dogs. Allow me to dissect this a little further.

By far the most frustrating aspect of the game I found to be individual mechanics and bugs, as well as glitches and collision-detection. For example, I am often stood next to a car and pressing 'enter', only for my character to just stand there, forcing me to hammer the button slightly to get him to respond. There are many other issues along these lines and they all add up to create a very frustrating experience, which is a shame because when the mechanics work, the game is quite enjoyable.

Another problem I have is with the driving; it makes no sense. Vehicles seem to drive either at minimum speed or maximum speed, there is no continuum; vehicles shoot off from the starting grid and come to a halt just as quickly, as well as other issues that make it difficult to control your vehicle.

This leads me to my final point - the inconsistent difficulty. I can go from whooping everyone' asses, to getting killed in just a few hits. There is no difficulty level and it seems to spike randomly.

Far too often I seemed to be fighting against the game to get it to play properly, which is a shame because much like True Crime, there are some very enjoyable elements. Best avoid unless you're desperate for a GTA fix.

An underappreciated rough diamond, Sleeping Dogs is a fresh take on the 3rd person open-world genre with a very different atmosphere. The Hong-Kong setting and hand-to-hand combat make Sleeping Dogs stand out and while the plot and characters can be a bit cheesy at times and the game feels like it's missing a bit of AAA polish, it's still very much worth experiencing.

    Long review:
This game is criminally underrated. Imo this is the best open world game ever made and a must play for anyone who has even a slight appreciation for gaming. This game is so good that the universe didn't want it to happen, it changed devs, changed completely conceptually (for the better tho) and almost didn't get released. Sounds like the game would turn out to be a mess right?? its quite the opposite actually. Its a masterpiece. It has easily the best gameplay in an open world game, its also extremely varied with it having 3 main types of gameplay instead of the usual 2, these are martial arts combat, gun fights and driving. Furthermore they all have depth to them which is rarely seen in an open world game, they aren't bare bones and as simple as they can be like gta for example, the martial arts combat has quite a few moves and environmental actions you can do, the gunfights allow you to slow down time in a similar way to max payne and aren't just point and click like gta, the driving mechanics allow you to hijack cars and slow down time when shooting which is much more interesting and fun than most open world games, open world games like gta are usually played to experience the world, it's story and it's set pieces, but rarely for the gameplay since its usually very simple and has no depth, its only there to serve its purpose, but that's not the case with this game and that's why I love it. This makes the game extremely replayable since you will be coming back to it not just to reexperience the great story but also for the gameplay. Conceptually this does the same thing the gta series has been doing for ages, which is taking influence from cinema and creating its own unique concept and story, but instead its with Asian cinema instead of American, which imo is vastly superior when it comes to action and this reflects in the gameplay. The hand-to-hand combat mechanics are great and very satisfying, they took influences from martial artists like Jackie Chan, Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa to create their own unique fighting style. The shooting mechanics are also great and derived from John Woo and Chow Yun-Fat flicks. The game also adds a lot of unique stuff too like the environmental actions during combat and the very unique story. The game is also extremely satisfying, mainly due to its realistic violence, brutal fighting and bloody firefights. The driving here is extremely fun but its arcadey so it might not be for everyone but I personally love it, driving and shooting here is much more fun than something like gta and hijacking cars is extremely fun. Parkour is also really fun and helps add variety. The story here is great, I loved the setting (hong kong), voice acting is phenomenal and I loved the characters and twists. The game is also extremely well paced and its length is perfect, its not too short but also doesn't over stay its welcome like gta 5. The graphics here are great and do a good job of creating a realistic and gritty atmosphere (even though it might not have the best shadows, poly count etc, it has an impressive amount of detail, even nowadays). Something I love about this game is the unique aesthetic, its based on hong kong but it also has a lot of unique aspects like the tattoos, the character appearance, the gritty atmosphere etc. The sound design here is also great, hits sound and feel brutal and guns sound realistic. The side stuff is skippable but you should definitely check them out if you like the game's mechanics, personally I really enjoy doing drug busts in between missions but found the cop jobs boring. The game is also nowhere near as polished as gta (as expected considering the lower budget) and has some minor issues like some npc's having a lower poly count, rarely enemies getting stuck on doors and waypoints not being exact but they are barely noticeable in a normal playthrough. Personally I prefer the console port since the 30 fps and rumble of the console port makes combat feel really brutal and satisfying unlike pc where the fights feel less brutal due it being way too smooth and having no rumble. I give this game a 10/10 because I rate stuff based on enjoyment but realistically its a 9/10. It would be a 10/10 if it was more polished though. That is a very high rating coming from me considering im not a huge fan of open world games so trust me when I tell you that you should buy this game, especially considering its just 30$ and goes on sale frequently for just 5$. The DLC is a mixed bag, Zodiac Tournament and Wheels of Fury are great but the others are skippable and nothing special.

Graphically you can see that it's clearly a PS3 game, the textures are poor, it has some visual glitches and the characters have a plastic shiny skin but at the same time there are moments in which it looks great, specially during the nights or in the facial expressions. The OST is really fitting with techno ethnic music remixed and also artist like Siouxsie and the Banshees, Opeth, Trivium and 80's great hits in the karaoke mini-game.

Of course the game is old but it’s undeniable how much quality there is here. The voice acting and cut scene animations are great. The story is straightforward but also very good. Quite gritty. The lighting and reflections are amazing. I still don’t know what the point of raytracing when this old game makes great reflections and lighting (comparatively)

Side quests are simple but fun.

The combat is very cool and different from other open world games. Yakuza 0 is on my list so I imagine now days it’s nothing new but for a first time experiencing martial arts arse kicking it is very cool.

Good attention to detail. Like the npc conversations, the few stores you can go into are alive. Negatives - Draw distance and occasional popping as a result of being an older title Streets could be busier

All in all for a game that is over 10 years old and priced very low it’s good entertainment. Which is what games are all about right? No wonder it has such a great reputation. Enjoy!

2021. Graphic still good. Good and chilling story telling campaign. PERFECT COMBAT SYSTEM. very detailed instructions for collectibles and open world activity. Don't compare it to GTA. Sleeping dogs is kinda focus what they want to do.

Absolutely great game. I got it on Steam when it was on sale. I never knew it existed. I was pleasantly surprised by the game and storyline. It is fun and worth it. It is one of those games where you wish there was more at the end and you really are drawn in by the characters. I highly recommend this game. You will not be disappointed.

If you have played Sleeping Dogs before, there’s no point in picking up the Definitive Edition. But if you’ve missed the original game, you’re gonna have a lot of fun in Hong Kong. [01/2015, p.71]

Whether you've played it before or not, the value for money makes this an impressive package. [Christmas 2014, p.76]

While overshadowed by Grand Theft Auto V, Sleeping Dogs is still a well written and executed action game. The combat mechanics are nothing short of superb. [Dec 2014]
