Gameplay wise I had little complaints. I hate only the upgrade system because I always feel like I choose the wrong things & would rather the game automatically be balaced. My other issue was with some cutscenes. The plot had its moments, but I just didnt care about the bad guy trying to end the world. I think Lara came off as shallow since her best friend Johna did everything to treat her good, yet since he’s not a sweaty chested bodybuilder, he only gets thank yous & goodbyes. We are 3 games in & the guy can’t catch a break. Also, why did TR tease duel pistols in previous games? They never make a comeback. Guess we all got lied to.

this is the first tomb raider game i play since ps2. maybe that's the reason i loved this so much?
or maybe its because of the magnificent graphics, or the over the top music and sound design, or the fact that you really see that they (at least) tried to be respectful with people and history, and genres etc.

Crystal Dinamics a tomar viento.

This is good news if you recall and enjoyed the more solitary exploration of the series 20 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. It plays like a dream. It is the wide-roaming, visually stunning, exploration focused TR experience I have been waiting for. The combat is very entertaining. You have to play it on the hardest setting for it to feel challenging. There is less frequent combat than in Tomb Raider (2013), but to me that made it a more fitting Tomb Raider experience.

Where this really shines as a Tomb Raider game is in the exploration and puzzle department. The feeling of risk and isolation is huge, especially if you play on Deadly Obsession. Some early platforming bugs that left to accidental deaths have thankfully been ironed out.

I enjoyed the RPG skill-based elements, they really suit the game and set it apart from the otherwise quite similar Uncharted series. However, there is too much focus on collecting parts to upgrade guns, when they make very little difference, and by the time your guns are powered up there are only about 3 proper combat sequences that need them. That said, the bow is as fun as ever and the shooting mechanics work perfectly. I hope the DLC will bring some combat missions.

The only down side is that the story is quite laboured and not especially gripping. The "key" and the "box" just felt like plot devices to progress the game, rather than a self contained story. The previous two games were better in that sense.

I highly recommend this game, it loses a point because the story wasn't as engaging as it could be.

Lara in Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a lot more social than the first 2. She can meet people, mission givers and traders in town. Jonah has partnered up with her so that has made her less of the lone warrior she was before. However it's also a very dark game. Halfway through she comes across grotesque creatures that turns it into a semi-horror.

I like how Eidos has given players options to customize the gameplay. Also default skipping Lara commenting upon the collectibles she finds was great. That was such an annoying speed bump for the first 2. I don't mind how there is less gunfights than the first 2 because I get to explore the area more. It's still fun coming across enemies as Eidos has given you multiple ways of taking them on. Eidos has kept the game interesting enough that I will replay it later. Still lots of side missions and other collectibles to get.

I have played the original tomb raider games as a teenager, and enjoyed the first 2 origin games by square-enix (the first being the best)

Play shadow of the tomb raider with hard exploration difficulty and you will have a genuinely satisfying tomb raiding experience, wherein in this final instalment tombs and crypts appear for a change well concealed and isolated from the rest of the map - sometimes also guarded by enemies. On hard exploration setting any clues and obvious white trail marks are switched off, meaning you will have to genuinely explore your surroundings in order to progress.

The puzzles are also satisfying - they will take you by and large a few minutes to work out - not as obvious and patronisingly simple as say "uncharted" game puzzles. On hard puzzle difficulty verbal hints will not be given at all, adding a challenge on first playthrough.

Combat is a bit annoying as enemies will spot you easily and have very good aim - to counter this set the combat difficulty to easy if you get frustrated. The other downside to combat is that due to the newly introduced stealth mechanic the game unfortunately forces you to play in this style, not really allowing you to go about a combat section in your own preferred way.

I agree with some commentators on the lacklustre story presentation - for example indigenous, non-contacted people speaking perfect english + merchants in their village selling modern weapons (makes no sense whatsoever...)

Despite its shortcomings in some areas this is still a great game... not perfect, but very good.

Before this game i played Rise of the Tomb Raider and this game was much better than that one. You really have to pay attention to the story and the characters as i would find myself lost in the story because it mainly revolves around solving riddles and those riddles deal with a part of history i am not familiar with. There were times where i would ask myself why am i doing this and the only answer i had at that time was i am trying to save the world. Here are my likes and dislikes about the game.

    Likes:
-A much better stealth approach than Rise of the Tomb Raider
-Liked the fact that the game took place in a jungle and not in snow. For some reason i wasn't a big fan of snow in the previous game.
-Amazing views and architectures. Tremendous credit to the developers on this one.
-The puzzles are frustrating, but they are so much more unique than the previous game.
-Jonah looked way better than the previous game.
-interacting with another culture is pretty cool
-The story is good as any game or movie to me that deals with the apocalypse is satisfying to watch or play.
-The skill tree has a better layout
-Love how they included the crazy arrow that makes enemies go insane.

    Dislikes:
-Due to me not having the required language skill or required gear to raid tombs or decipher murals i had to come back to them which was really annoying because yes there is fast travel, but even then to me it was not worth coming back unless i felt like it as you still had to trek through the jungle and find it again.
-Stringing enemies up into trees didn't look that great when executed. Just looked very odd. Maybe it was a glitch or something.
-Towards the end pf completing a challenge tomb it doesn't feel as satisfying as the previous game as all you do is pull down the mechanism and the challenge is completed. Whereas the other game you would open the mechanism and light would spew out and felt more satisfying.

To me there is a lot to love about this game and not sure why the user score is a 7.4. This game is so much better than the previous one. I hope they come out with another Tomb Raider game as the series has been addicting. Maybe the next game takes place in Egypt as that would be awesome.

    My score: 92/100

The game world has a lot more density (except for the predator animals). There is a lot to do. There are more side missions. You can free roam more freely in the Peruvian jungle. There are a lot of collectibles. You always have a reason to go back to the jungle. This game is going to get you addicted. The two city hubs are also a nice change in gameplay and variety. You can tell that the devs have done a lot of effort in it. There are a lot of details in the world. The tombs are more dangerous and scarier. The story is more dark. Not as dark has I have expected but overall the story gets you hooked. More then in Rise. The visuals are beautiful (Though I think on the Xbox One X it is even better). Tho there are some minor bugs and framerate dips here and there. And also.... where is all the blood when you stealth kill your enemy.
The voice acting of Lara is superb. Love her voice and the different facial animations. The game itself is not very polished. (Lara her bow goes right through her face). The enemy ai at some points is also not very good. And also there are not a lot of predator animals. Survival feeling is low (We are in one of the most dangerous jungles in the world. Where is all the danger?). But that does not stand in the way that this a good crafted game. I am in love with it. Love the whole Maya vibe. Love the setting and the art style.

If you are a fan of it you will love it. If your new to the series then remember that there are no real differences with Rise.

The whole rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy has been absolutely stellar, and this game caps it off excellently. It's very difficult to pick which is better between this and Rise of the Tomb Raider, as both are excellent, although this game does lean more into the exploration and puzzle side of things, while Rise was a lot more combat-heavy and action-packed.

It's very difficult to pick which is better between this and Rise of the Tomb Raider, as both are excellent, although this game does lean more into the exploration and puzzle side of things, while Rise was a lot more combat-heavy and action-packed.

The graphics here are beautiful; some of the best on PS4 when it comes to the stunning environments and super-detailed main character models. Lara herself looks brilliant in particular, and is again voiced expertly by Camilla Luddington, however some of the NPCs can look rather generic and sometimes the difference in detail between Lara and someone she is talking to can be a little jarring.

Gameplay-wise, this plays very similarly to the previous Tomb Raider reboot entries, which seems to be drawing very heavily from Uncharted. However a few additional mechanics have been added, such as a grappling hook, enhanced stealth, and a new emphasis on underwater sections and swimming, which can add some great tension when squeezing through a gap underwater then rushing to the surface or nearest opening for a quick gasp of air.

The game world itself is a little more open than in Rise of the Tomb Raider, and there are plenty of expertly designed tombs to be found and conquered. I did feel that a few of them were a little difficult to find however, even when using the map to direct you. The waypoint system is something that could be improved, and this has been true for the whole trilogy.

If you enjoyed the 2013 Tomb Raider reboot, or Rise of the Tomb Raider, then this is a must-buy. I would definitely recommend playing those games first however to get the most out of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, as there is a story continuation throughout them all which is wrapped up satisfyingly here.

I really like how you can set the difficulty settings for each of the ways you like to be challenged. You can decide separately how difficult you want the puzzles, exploration, and combat to be. I only knocked it down a point for the ridiculous story. I know that the premise of the series is rather unbelievable, but the plot doesn't really resolve satisfyingly. The graphics still hold up very well on a PS4 in 2022, even better on a PS4 Pro. But on a PS5, it looks great! The soundtrack is excellent, sound effects are very good, as well as the voice acting. And the set pieces are absolutely stunning!

The game play and puzzles are a complete blast. There were some cool mechanics that I wish would have been expanded upon (mud and leaf walls for camo), but they were still fun additions.

To close, and to avoid spoilers, the story is quite interesting., and it was a solid "closure" for Camilla's Survivor Lara Croft. By far the best in my opinion.

Anybody saying this is the same as Rise of the Tomb Raider is talking out their you-know-what. There are more changes and improvements in this game than we got from one game to another in a certain other similar franchise that I won't name. Suffice to say, this game has evolved plenty and is a lot of fun to play.

ReusingThe third and—allegedly—final installment in the "origins reboot trilogy", Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an adventure/action videogame with light role-playing and Metroidvania elements that doesn't seek to revolutionize either the franchise or the genre. In fact, it sticks to the formula and concepts of the first two entries too close, only adding a few quality-of-life improvements. Reusing what has worked in the past can be both a blessing and a curse. On the one hand, returning fans of the series can expect to experience all the things that made them fall in love with the two previous titles of the origins reboot trilogy: hunting wild animals, crafting materials and improving gear using resources collected, solving puzzles, doing optional tombs and side quests, and founding different types of collectibles, it is all there. Conversely, providing gameplay otherwise identical to that of Rise of the Tomb Raider leads to seriously questioning if the franchise has once more stalled and if it's time for it to take another break. Perhaps. In any case, the gaming experience is solid for the most part (minor imprecisions in the platforming and with how the camera controls) and, at the end of the day, quite satisfying.

Beyond the cliched argument that sets the game in motion, Shadow of the Tomb Raider tries to conclude Lara Croft's origins storyline on a personal level. It is a precautionary tale about human nature and how far a person will go to accomplish its goals, whether valid or not. As a result of this more insightful approach to the game's narrative, the action had to be kept in check for two purposes: one, to give the characters more time to reflect on the world and their actions, and two, to grow tension and make these moments more impactful. Does it pay off? Aside from one masterfully crafted sequence/scene mid into the game, not in the epic way the developers wished for. It doesn't help the fact that, despite Camilla Luddington's utterly brilliant performance, the Lara Croft character falls somewhat flat because of the underwhelming cast of individuals (except her friend, Jonah Meave) she's paired with: supporting roles are passable at best while the antagonist feels like a greatly missed opportunity. The narrative works ok but it isn't something outstanding in the end.

Finally, if there is anything in Shadow of the Tomb Raider that deserves absolute praise are its visuals and art direction. True, character models don't achieve photorealistic status—in fact, they are a bit off—but the landscapes, the tombs, and the in-game relics are astonishingly beautiful, with the latter paying so much attention to details that could easily pass as exact replicas of the real thing. It goes to show the developers put their heart into studying and researching materials and lore to finally achieving such an outstanding result. Simply gorgeous.

    CONCLUSION
Shadow of the Tomb Raider may not be the epic conclusion everyone was hoping for but it is a very good game in an otherwise fantastic trilogy. Yes, it doesn't do more than necessary, it misses some narrative opportunities, and it prioritizes functionality above else. However, the game still works and is quite an enjoyable ride despite the shortcomings. And, honestly, that's all that matters in the end.

Don’t get me wrong I had a blast playing this game, it just felt monotonous at times, when you realise its practically the same action over and over again. The puzzle elements were fine, and added that little bit of head scratching challenge you would expect. The fight scenes, especially the final boss was fun to play. Even stealth was challenging to a point it was fun, and I hate stealth.
Though the game has its ups, it does have its downs. The game plays much like previous instalments, unearth some ancient artefact leading to a wonderful hidden civilisation, while running away from a military organisation hellbent on killing you, all the while Lara keeps saying that everything bad that happens is her fault.

That last bit leads me on to my final point. I get it Lara is an all action fighting machine, I mean she is a Tomb Raider, but by god can she not be so stubborn about everything. Someone dies or is injured, she’s all like I’m sorry this is all my fault. She gets injured, she doesn’t want anyone’s help. Its like she plays the good guy and bad guy at exactly the same time.

The game then is a fun play, although it gets repetitive and the character personality does irritate me from time to time, it’s still a fun game nonetheless. I don’t know if there will be another game, but if there is let’s hope it’s as good this one if not better.

This game is very reminiscent of Uncharted 4 and Horizon Zero Dawn, which is a good thing. It is a beautiful exploration game, with challenging puzzles, and nice gameplay mechanics and customization. A little more polish on the gunplay/shooting would have boosted the score to a 9!

First of all I am by no means a hardcore fan or played many of the games so far, so this review is as honest as it can be. I was thinking about buying this franchise title for a while and did recently. The journey was very worthwhile.

    World // Engine // Graphics // Sound // Atmosphere : 10/10
I love the semi-open the open world. It gives guidance without being plain useless. It still brings comfort options such as fast traveling and the engine seems solid. My PS4 Pro with SSD had no hiccups at all. The engine looks amazing wiht much love to detail. The animals are beautiful, weapons and items are reflected seamless on the character. Hair is still an optimization factor but did not bother me much.

The sound arena is spectacular and brings an intense atmosphere to the ground. Crawling thorugh dark tombs, shadows casting to the walls, vast seas, beautiful waterfalls, lava caverns and nice towns. The stage is set and game makes a lot out of it. I was stunned by the scenery and took more then one amazing screenshot.

    Controls // Mechanics: 6/10
One of my personal negative spots are the mechanics. Yes, the game has indicators on the surroundings much similar to genre titles such as Uncharted but it still feels sometimes that things are not in the proper place. Some jumps land into the void which should not. Some grapple spots are so unforgiving that even due to the very solid auto save feature, sometimes it just killed my nerves. I think they should have used one or two mechanics less to make it more simplistic because stuff as the over-head grapple wasnt used much either. There are some few passages that could ve been shortened and some challenge tombs are a little bit too irritating when it comes to pathing.

    Story // Puzzles: 9/10 - 6/10
The story feels very generic. At some point I had a though of an 2019 Indiana Jones classic remake which made me laugh for a second. After all the story is still fun and well made with love to details and characters. Of course some stuff is pretty much head over heals hollywood. Having a girl climbing mountains, jumping over small pikes etc. etc. but in one scene she gets hand to drop down a 2 meter deep hole... had to laugh again but its okay. Laras sidekick is a nice addition to the game but they could ve made more out of that. Some passages made me slap my forehead hard. Like rescue someone to get someone else captured to capture this person to get another one captured really pissed me off at a point.

The puzzles are okay-ish to awkward. Some are simple, some are more complex. I cannot say that they were all bad but some were unnecessary time consuming.

    Combat // Weaponry 9/10:
Combat in general feels pretty fluent. I was a little bit irritated about the gun heavy bits at the end because for a while I was pretty sure that I would be able to finish it 100% stealth. Ducking, running, covering, jumping from trees, shooting guns, arrows, poison, flares. Lara got it all and it is fun although for a normal playthorugh you will need not much to finish it.

Normal wildlife and special wildlife can be killed very easily even without use of special stuff or weaponry. Soldiers can be a little more persistent but then it is still not much to overcome at normal difficulty, which still feels rewarding. The final boss is little bit more of a challenge still more of a long drawn battle then really complex.

The weapon set is exciting. Multiple bows, handguns, shotguns, rifles and a knife complete the arsenal together with normal and specialized ammo. Most of them can be upgraded with ressources that respawn indefinitely in the game. Ontop of that you can skill Lara within three different categories, most of which I never really needed.

    Summary:
Shadow of the Tomb Raider on sale is worth the bucks it takes. A solid playthrough with some trophy catching will take you around 15-30 hrs for a full clean you will need more time and at least two playthroughs. The world is semi open with much love for detail and atmosphere. The mechanics are decent but overloaded at times. Lara itself is displayed in a positive and adventurous way. Puzzles are a bit of a let down but the game overall provides solid fun.

    Would buy again on sale.

Despite all that the game can be a lot fun, especially the challenge tombs. While not really a challenge or hard to figure out, they still give the TR series a unique element that similar games are missing.

I finished my playthrough in around 16 hours (I did a few side quests and completed 3 optional tombs). I think however a game is more than the sum of its parts. Shadow of the Tomb Raider has a great combat system, interesting crafting mechanisms, good platforming overall and challenging puzzles. The problem here is that you won't have so much opportunities to test your different weapons or special techniques as the combat is not as frequent as the previous entries. I felt that the game was designed for those who like to do new game plus or multiple playthroughs (there are some metroidvania elements).

Most of the time, a developed skill tree system and crafing system are more relevant in an open world game IMO. It can be good also in a linear or semi-openworld game but we need enough opportunities to test the gear, unlocked skills and abilities.

For the story, I thought that was pretty average.

I still recommend this game, especially for those who played the other tomb raiders. I think the normal difficulty and hard difficulty are well balanced (I switched between those two difficulties in my playthrough). It's really nice also that you can even more customize the difficulty by selecting specific difficulties for exploration, puzzles and combat.

A quick last note....We feel a lot of inspiration from Uncharted franchise in this one (more cinematic cutscenes and similar vibes in specific parts of the story)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I played on PS4 and finished 2 playthroughs. One on hard and one on hard for traversal and puzzles but normal for combat. I'm not a friend of hard combat so I don't think I'm gonna play this on a harder diffuclty.

    pros:

    - I had a bug free game except for the 100% artifact achievement

    - photo mode (could need some improvement but there already is a thread for that)

    - the traversal in every aspect without the white ledges. I looooove it every time Lara's grib fails and I have to press the grab button again.

    - piranhas

    - every puzzle and tomb, especially the eagle trial and path of battle

    - the nahual quest

    - the stealth system

    - the cenotes, the whole yaaxil stuff gave me the creeps (you heard them but never really saw them); especially before we really knew what

    and who they are.

    - The cenotes challenge tomb with the ship

    - San Juan was a lovely hub, wish it would had been bigger.

    - Lara's arms :3

    - Unuratu was very well written, I really felt sad when she died

    - Etzli was gladly not some annoying little brat but I would had prefered a little older boy (16) to take on his mothers heir. How old is he?

    Maybe 13?

    - Villagers voiced their annoyance when Lara ran and shoved them outta the way.

    - Jonah did a good job on keeping Lara on the ground. For exampel when he shouted at her after the tsunami.

    - The story itself was good.

    - Lara's personality was good, like she didn't had time or cared about her injured leg while Jonah worried. The best part was when she had her badass moment at the oil refinery and the "Don't try me" part.
What irked me was that she said sorry to Amaru after stabbing him. Why? He killed her father. She didn't had any connection with him. I would had understand the "sorry" if he had been one of her Professors or an old friend who visited them often when Lara was young. Also that she fell so easily for Rourke's lie about Jonah being dead.

    cons:

    - her stiff necklace (might be minor but it annoyed me)

    - There were no visible marks on Lara's back (in the cutscene) after the Jaguar attack. I mean her back must have deep cuts from those

    claws.
    - way too often in combat my view got blocked by big ass leaves (some games make objects transparent when the camera gets too close) - Invisible walls ok there weren't that many but I wished I could jump on most tents, sheds, block of stones. For example I was deeply annoyed that I couldn't jump and climb on most of the buildings in San Juan village and Kuvaq Yaku. I WOULD LOVE TO CLIMB EVERYTHING - The villagers of Paititi shared how many different faces? Not many because after running around some time I recognized them all over again. Some incest heavy village there. Also the faces of Amarus guards all looked the same you can even recognize that tho they wear helmets or facepaint. A little bit more face diversity wouldn't hurt. - Where's that deadly Jungle? There weren't enough Jaguar encounters. Where are the Anacondas, black caimans, giant centipedes and vipers? I didn't felt threatened by the Jungle at all. - combat: I know they reduced combat but imo it was too much reduction. I wouldn't had mind to encounter 2- 4 human enemies here and there and definitely more animal encounters. The first would have been a good place to use hanging enemies up by tree branches. - no enemies in tombs and cryptas - while the underwater sections where pretty and fun; especially when Piranhas were around it wasn't very challenging because I always had enough air. - I was missing a manual control for the flashlight - traps! I only died by one. They are too easy to see, especially if you walk instead of run. - The boss fight. I miss big epic boss battles where you have to learn their mechanics. Destroy/hit some sore spot, evade attacks, go for a boss hit that shortens the Boss life bar (that we can actually see) than repeat until we get to phase two. some random thoughts and suggestions: - I'd prefer to unlock instead of buying some weapons or weapon upgrades, outfits and other extras like hairstyle (Yes the braid), sunglasses, a hat (like I was really envious about Isabella's hat that would have worked perfectly with the adventurer outfit) and colors to dye some outfit parts. I want to be really rewarded by climbing up or down a hard to find cave or some secret passage. Or the church tower in San Juan. Or some underwater section. As of now Shadow is imo the best in this reboot series. And that's it I enjoyed the game and give it 8 out of 10 points.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. When Tomb Raider got rebooted in 2013 I was looking forward to seeing how it would turn out. And thankfully in the end it turned out to be a great game and the same can be said of it’s sequel Rise of the Tomb Raider. And with Shadow in the Tomb Raider it marks the end of Lara Croft Origin Trilogy. I thought story wise the first game was a great introduction to what type of character we were going to get this time around. Rise of the Tomb Raider continued to tell her origin story, only this time adding the organization Trinity who were responsible for the death of her father. And now with Shadow of the Tomb Raider this is where we were able to find out more about why Trinity killed her father and we see Lara transform into the Tomb Raider many fans know and love.

I was excited about playing this game because I was looking forward to seeing what Lara Croft would do next but, the thing with this game is my level of excitement going into this game was not as high when comparing to when the game was rebooted and when Rise of the Tomb Raider came out. After playing this game I was left satisfied with the gameplay but, felt that story wise they could have handled a lot of the events that occur in this game better. The story of this game is Lara is on a mission to stop Trinity from acquiring a dagger that can cause the apocalypse if anyone were to get it. So in order for Trinity to not acquire the dagger Lara get the dagger and because of her action she causes the apocalypse. And now the only way she can stop the world from ending is to go to South America and find the legendary city of Paititi and find the box that can stop the apocalypse.

The direction of Lara’s character early on in the game I wasn’t a fan of because she came across as an unlikeable character. And I know that the point of that is so supporting characters like Jonah can call her out and she grows as a character as you play the game. Unfortunately the way that it was handle just didn’t sit well with me and it took a long time for me to like Lara as a character again. And as for the villain of the game this is another problem I have with the story because the main villain really could have benefited from being apart of the previous game so we can learn more about the character and somewhat sympathy with the villian. I only say that because the game was intending to do this as the story progressed and in the end it was underwhelming.

As for the gameplay it's the same as the other games with some added element like how stealth is handled in the game. There are some areas where you can hide on walls and use as camouflage. That is made most evident seeing how you can use the mud on the ground and have Lara cover herself in it and like that see can use a lot of the environment to her advantage. These segments are fun and satisfying especially when you can successfully take out an area without being seen.

One thing I really loved from Tomb Raider 2013 were the tombs you can explore because they provided puzzles and you can net yourself some rewards. Now this game does have tombs but, my issue with how they were handled this time is that most of the tombs I found I couldn’t do because I needed a specific weapon or attachment in order to enter the tomb. And for the most part I couldn’t do a lot of tombs because of that and it almost seems like tombs were meant as post game content. While in the end I enjoyed the experience after I beat the game I didn’t want to continue playing. For me when the credits rolled I didn’t have any interest in completing the tombs because I was done there was no reward worth it for me because I beat the final area and there was no point to complete tombs at that point. Luckily there is a new game plus feature so maybe this is the best way to tackle tombs as you play.

In the end Shadow of the Tomb Raider was a really good game and I would recommend this game to anyone who have enjoyed the rebooted series. The game looks great and the music was also really good which added to a lot of the moments that did stand out in the game. Especially the scenes where you see the badass Lara Croft we know and love. This is my least favorite out of the three but, it was still a journey I was glad to see in the end and I am excited to see what is next for Lara Croft.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have attained 100% completion in the Deadly Obsession difficulty.
    https://youtu.be/Y_xXKn-g-cE
And with that I want to give my take on the game.

Generally I think it is a good game. I enjoyed playing it. I feel there are certain aspects that can be improved. I would recommend the game but I also have suggestions on approaching the game.

I don’t have any problems with the storyline. It’s not cluttered, not confusing and not too lengthy. It was well thought out. I did not have to play the first two games to figure out what is going on. Generally satisfying storyline with good buildup, good flow and good ending.

The characters complement the storyline. Lara is not straight up full of conviction. She doubts herself and is somewhat conflicted. Those traits do make her more relatable and endearing. We also see multi-dimension in the antagonist Dominguez. He has Paititi’s interest at heart, just his methods are too extreme. It was saddening when Unuratu died. It was particularly heartbreaking when Jonah was supposedly killed.

The character animation is top notch. Lara is beautiful. Jonah wouldn’t be as lovable if he doesn’t look the way he does. Characters aside, the environments depicted are also breathtaking. From the lush jungles to the lively towns and cities to the dark and appropriately claustrophobic caves and tombs, everything was meticulously detailed. I love it.

Exploration in the game is really fun. Lara has the skill set befitting of a tomb raider. What spoils the fun is how inconsistent the game behaves when Lara is executing these moves. One moment she can do it. Reload the game, do the exact same thing and this time she falls to her demise. The inconsistencies and luck factor have to be removed. Apart from all that, I think the game excels in allowing me to live out my fantasy of venturing into caves and tombs; something I consider too dangerous to do in real life.

I generally dread combat in the game. In the Deadly Obsession difficulty, the best, if not the only approach towards combat is stealth. Sadly, stealth, like exploration, is inconsistent and therefore unreliable. It is not broken because you can eventually stealth your way to victory. For the number of tries you need to succeed, you could actually be doing the same things. Just the outcomes are different and you would be wondering why. Stealth could be improved to be more robust to improve the overall combat experience. As for the fights that provide no option to go stealth, I would say I am not a big fan of the idea of Rambo Lara singlehandedly going up against military trained Trinity soldiers or even the Yaaxil.

With how dreadful combat is, I do enjoy the missions and tombs where no combat is involved. The challenge tombs are so fun and challenging. The puzzles are very well thought out and executed.

I do not recommend the Deadly Obsession difficulty. What makes the difficulty broken is the fact that the game only saves at base camps. I wasted a lot of time getting to the hard parts rather than dealing with the hard parts. Using time wastage to achieve a certain level of difficult is a terrible idea. I don’t understand how game developers can confuse challenging with time consuming.

That’s my review. Let me know what you think. I welcome different perspectives.

Gran juego.

This game is pretty immense and arguably underrated, especially when viewed next to the most recent Tomb Raider games. The reason I can understand some of the mixed reception the game had on release is I have played the game to death and can recognise things that a certain player won't get along with in this. Let me explain.

Classic Tomb Raider (1996) was mainly about three things: the puzzles, the exploration and the suspense. The suspense part often came from the few encounters you'd actually get, alongside a sudden surge in music, which was otherwise pretty scarce. I see Shadow as returning more to these values, which is why I loved it so much, as these things were what made the original a classic. Recent entries I also enjoyed have arguably been widely successful because of the action and encounters. In this game the thing that will stand out most will be the Tombs themselves, and puzzles therein. There are encounters, however it doesn't feel like they are frequent. The game's definitely cinematic though, and you do indeed still get some of the rush from the recent games. For instance, there is one area that is flooded early on, and you're negotiating getting through it. Let's just say, it's literally a rush.

So, assuming you enjoy the Tomb aspect of Tomb Raider, this entry has the most of them, and also the best of them in years. The puzzles when taken as a whole (including the excellent x7 DLC quest/ Tombs) are the most inventive, most taxing, and impressive looking, and if this is your bag, you will probably find this the best Tomb Raider in years. If not, you may actually hate this entry, because, without the aid of guides, this game taxes you... you have to pay attention, you have to listen and watch for the clues. This game could frustrate the hell out of you.

The visuals are absolutely fantastic, arguably an improvement on the previous title. The texture detail, even on a base PS4 boggled my mind. This late 2018 game looks consistently good on practically all textures in the game in and out of cut scenes. Something I can not say for a more recent entry like say, Final Fantasy 7 Remake.

This was a platinum trophy pursuit, and I really appreciated everything the game offered. I didn't even mind most of the side quest content because they often involved entering one of the many impressive looking crypts or tombs in the main game. Some side-quests however were very 'fetchy' or 'back and forthy', which is always a chore to have to do in *any* game of this nature.

The negatives in the game for me I will say amount to the controls. At times the control response in platforming seemed inconsistent. That is to say, an action that worked in one area will not have the expected response in another area, or you may have to compensate without the game being explicit about letting on. It's difficult to explain in words, but suffice to say, as a consequence expect to die a lot during the platforming in this. For many this will be extremely irritating as it was even to me at times. This is only made worse in very hard mode (needed for Platinum trophy), as the checkpoint saves are far fewer / if any.

The other area I wasn't that into was the story itself, however within it the acting, drama and voices hit the mark for me, as the visuals (textures and backgrounds) are all on point, even on 7 year old (time of writing) base PS4 hardware.

I definitely recommend the game. I say it is underrated but recognise it won't be for everybody owing to the difficulty spike, some of the control during platforming, and its emphasis in often very taxing, very long but rewarding puzzles

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider is a very decent game with good platforming and an engaging story and an overall well made soundtrack, other than all these aspects the game has a lot of flaws. One of them being the awful combat system, it’s absolutely baffling how lame and boring it is, the crafting and skill tree are great but the combat isn’t. Let’s not forget the most noticeable flaw, and that is the weird sudden cuts with the audio, it’s pretty baffling for a triple A to have audio issues frequently appear. Other than these flaws the game is enjoyable until you reach a puzzle, let’s be positive for a second. The games platforming is very good and it’s supported by well made levels, the story is pretty engaging and overall pretty great and of course supporting all that is the incredible soundtrack. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider might have flaws a lot of them in fact, but the engaging story and great platforming are things to look forward to that it might just make you forget about the flaws sometimes. This game continues the trend set in the previous two volumes. It is a more than decent ending to the trilogy, however Tomb Raider has begun to stagnate somewhat.

As such, the game doesn't offer much new stuff, it's more of a recycling of mechanics used in the previous installments. This isn't a bad thing in itself, as the gameplay model is very intuitive, but more novelty would have

There are some new things, though, such as the newly developed Skill tree.

The story is again well written. The graphics are phenomenal.

The price/performance speaks clearly for buying this game.
I rate it 8/10, unlike the other games in this series.

the story was very underwhelming. which made the game a big disappointment. the previous games had much better story. the level design and tomb puzzles kept the game interesting. the graphics were really good.
    I give the graphics 910
    in-game audio 710

    Level design 910
    stealth combat 910

Shallow story aside, Shadow of the Tomb Raider has the best tomb exploration in the series, and that’s what it’s all about.

Still very good, but in some ways weaker than the previous game. Still, fans shouldn’t miss it, just because it is the conclusion of the trilogy. [Issue#289]

Shadow of the Tomb Raider should leave us wanting more from the rebooted Lara Croft game, but with some clunky controls and a lazy combat system, what saves the game from being below average are beautiful visuals, fantastic puzzles and tomb layouts along with true adventuring. It’s as mixed up of a bag as one can get.
