This game cannot decide if it wants to be Uncharted or Far Cry. On one hand you have amazing linear story-driven parts which are as well the best parts of it. Unfortunately they are not what you experience most of the time. Between them you find two large and one medium-sized "open-world" zones. They are filled with collectibles, challenges and side quests. This is the most boring part of game because collecting all this stuff can be compared to more grindy parts of MMOs. There's little incentive to do side-quests and collect all this stuff because just walking through the game on normal difficulty gets you so much stuff that you don't know what to do with it.

There are also some strange aspects of the game like hunting bears and large cats. A hunter would have waited for the beast to come out of it's lair and shoot it from afar or up from the tree. Not in this game, Lara charges head on into these beasts and literally kites them until she shoots them dead. If you run too far or jump on a tree or ledge, animal runs to lair and resets sequence. Brilliant.

The writing is however the weakest part of this game. It's very shallow and dialogues are on the brink of cringe. Main characters and villains both write personal notes about their deepest feelings and thoughts and lay them all around in really high quantities. Lara in her thoughts always refers to herself per "Lara". Nobody does that for crying out loud and it soon becomes irritating and quite hilarious. The main storyline is nowhere as good as Tomb Raider's (2013) - it is predictable and lacks the same mysticism.

The highlights of the game are mechanics, although they have not changed since Tomb Raider (2013). This game is to the predecessor as Crysis 3 was to Crysis 2. This doesn't mean they aren't enjoyable, however they could have done a little more.

The best part of the game are the tombs which are much better than in Tomb Raider (2013). There's also a lot more of them. They offer quite interesting riddles but I wouldn't mind if each was a tiny bit longer and more elaborate.

The graphics are very good but animations and especially facial animations are lacking except for main cutscenes. There's also some severe issue with aliasing on PS4 (I can't say for other platforms). It seems there's simply no AA which is evident in ropes which are frequent sight in this game.

It's also worth mentioning that this game feels a little rough around edges. I found a few bugs playing in December 2016. It's been one year since initial release so I guess they should have been fixed by now. One of them required reload of last checkpoint as it blocked progress (fortunately checkpoints are frequent).

I would sum it up this way. If you liked Tomb Raider 2013, you'll like this one too. It's the same game in different setting with different maps. The story is weaker, but it's serviceable. It actually feels like this game was due for 2013 release but just got stuck in time.

My first few hours in the game was great but after a few more I started to feel as if I was playing the same game that I had played several years before but without the gripping story that pulled me in.

The story: I personally found it hard to really care for any of the characters in this game including Lara which is a shame because the developers could have really made a great story out of this game. For example, the characters just come in go in this game. I found it hard to finish this game and once I did I literally had no desire to replay the game like I did so many other times like the original TR.

Graphics: They are good, however a lot of the textures are used again and again throughout the game since the game is extremely repetitive.

Overall, I would recommend this game on sale but not full price for it. Most of the DLC that is included felt cheap and short. Though exploring Lara's mansion was interesting it was really short and should have been more in depth. The story and characters just didn't have enough life to them to develop or care for them.

As much as I hate to admit it Rise of the Tomb Raider is really f@#king good. I wouldn't classify it as open world but it's close enough. Like the reboot ROTR gives you the ability to fast travel to any section of the game and do side missions or challenges, as well as Tombs you tried earlier but didn't have the right gear. The tombs are insanely good. I'm not much of a puzzle fan because I am really bad at them but ROTR does it just right. It doesn't hold your hand but there are subtle hints if the game senses you in one Tomb too long. The most underrated part of this game I think is the story. I really liked it and as much as I love the Uncharted series, I think ROTR's story is right up their with the best. Controls are super fluid, and is nowhere near as annoying as the reboot's control scheme was. Level design is done really well giving you the chance to find all secrets and tombs before moving on to the next section. If you were like me and decided a while ago that you would vote with your wallet and not buy this game kudos to you for following through. I couldn't, and ultimately I am glad I didn't because this game I think will be considered a classic in the future. Expand

Pretty good in general. ROTTR keeps a lot of the 2013 reboot's strengths, especially the fluid gameplay/combat. And again, the graphics are excellent. It doesn't push any boundaries though, and the overall feel is incredibly similar to TR 2013.

The story is the game's greatest weakness, quickly becoming stale and predictable. There isn't the same sense of mystery as we saw with TR 2013.

The story is the game's greatest weakness, quickly becoming stale and predictable. There isn't the same sense of mystery as we saw with TR 2013. I didn't feel much emotional connection to the plot or side characters either. And while Lara's voice-acting was pretty good, the overall dialogue and acting for the other NPCs is not great, especially compared to games like Uncharted 4.

I still feel like the game could do without the whole brutal finishers thing and whatnot. Fun as they are, it continues to ruin the consistency of Lara's character.

The upgrades have been expanded on, accompanied by a plethora of grindy collectibles. However, there's little practical reason to grind for these, as Lara quickly becomes powerful enough to take on all the enemies the game throws at her. And so, despite all the content added into the game, I feel like there isn't much incentive (for most gamers) to go back and finish it.

The best part of ROTTR is the challenge tombs. Although most of them lean on the short side, there are now a lot more of them compared to TR 2013. The rewards from these tombs are a mixed bag, but the experience of completing them is pretty much worth it by itself.

Overall, ROTTR is like Uncharted 4 with more open-world elements, a considerably inferior story, and worse dialogue. If you liked TR 2013, you'll enjoy this for sure, as it's very similar gameplay- and mechanics-wise.

Well, even though it's better in every way, it's still a dumb action movie turned video game. Just less dumb than Uncharted 4, and with more interesting things to do.

The story is a standard Indiana Jones knockoff, with this one focused on searching for what is basically the fountain of youth - for no particular reason other than your dad died looking for it. While the ideas behind all of the unexplored ruins and character actions are quite far-fetched, they're at least less far-fetched than Uncharted 4. As long as you're okay with the typical blockbuster action movie, you'll have no problems with this story.

The action sequences are quite unbelievable. You'll frequently be running through exploding buildings, falling canyon walls, and crumbling ruins, just barely surviving each time. Yeah more dumb action movie nonsense, but less dumb, and slightly more believable than the same stuff in Uncharted 4.

And then there's the combat and climbing. You're basically superwoman disguised as a normal woman. You'll be able to take on groups of gun-armed troops with only an axe, by running directly at them, one-shot multiple enemies at the same time with a single shot from your trusty bow (after you get the skills to do this - which makes most guns useless), and climb near-vertical cliffs with your scrawny not-at-all-suited-for-rock-climbing arms. So if you're still young and on a power trip, this game has got you covered.

Realism in enemy placement is done better than in Uncharted 4. In that game, people would just start randomly attacking you, like everyone in the evil organization knew exactly what you looked like and where you were at all times, even when going to remote random locations. At least in this game, you're typically going into enemy-protected territories, so it makes sense that they'd fire on whoever showed up.

When you're not doing combat or running through exploding corridors, you'll be exploring and solving physics-based puzzles. Some of this is required to get through the main story and much more of it is optional. The great part about this is that there are skill-based rewards for finding and completing optional tombs. So you don't just get a useless relic, but something that feels tangible in-game, and is normally quite useful. The puzzles are pretty good, although a bit on the easy side for an experienced puzzle solver. After I found all of the levers, ropes, interactive objects, and the end-goal of each puzzle, it was easy enough to figure out the solutions and then climb my way around to activate the right parts in the right order. The exploration and puzzle aspect of this game was far more interesting to me than Uncharted 4.

And then there's the crafting. There's a good number of items and weapon upgrades to craft that require animal skins and other things you find lying around or on enemies. After you craft something, its yours forever, so you will eventually run out of stuff to craft. Well, besides usable items, such as fire arrows, exploding arrows and poison arrows. And thankfully the raw materials are plentiful enough for those that I never felt the need to try to conserve my arrow use. The crafting aspect of the game makes it much more interesting than Uncharted 4, which had nothing like that.

Oh, and there's loads of costumes. None are really fan service related, but at least a few show off the main character's assets well enough. They're all quite normal clothes (mostly winter clothes), with some giving various benefits. Most are unlocked by default with this 20th anniversary edition, but you get a few others by doing story content, side content, and collecting money in-game.

Besides all of the above, there's lots of relics and documents to collect. Relics don't do much, and are basically just an achievement goal. Documents give in-game lore for various periods of time. Having 100 year old documents sitting around doesn't make much sense, but at least they all have a summary at the top. Most documents aren't very interesting (don't expect any thought-provoking writing), so I normally just read the summary - again, better than what Uncharted 4 offered, which was no summary for its documents.

I'm not at all awed by visual realism in games, but this one does a pretty good job at it.

The game surprised me. I wasn't expecting the well-done puzzles, crafting, or slightly-more-believable story than Uncharted 4. So now I'll be looking for a good deal on its sequel.

Rise of The Tomb Raider is a decent sequel that manages to do everything a sequel should techincally, it manages to fix gameplay problems, gives you more options, takes you to new and (kind of) interesting locations and it serves as an evolution of it's predecessor.
So why did I end up feeling like the game was just "Fairly good", despite liking most of the gameplay, the locations and the mechanics. Easy - the story and characters. The game's story is filled to the brim with every Indiana Jones-esque cliche known to man. There isn't a single plot point which you don't see coming a mile away, and the few twists it tries to pull never get the chance to make an impact because of how little you care for the characters and what happens to them. Not wanting to see Lara fall to her death aside, I couldn't give less of a **** about what she felt, what she wanted or the whole "father-daughter" plot they did (I swear I zoned out every time that came up).

RISE OF THE TOMB RAIDER: 20 YEAR CELEBRATION is a great game gameplay-wise and you can have a lot of fun with it, but it just feels hollow, it lacks any emotional pull. You'll find yourself trailing off into side-activities constantly because they just feel far more interesting than the campaign itself.
That is why I'm rating it a very light 7/10./

The game has enough cut-scenes to tell the story, and the transition between cut-scenes to game play is smooth and keeps the player immersed. There are also plenty of skills and equipment, including skins for various attires that are readily available and a few can be unlocked from game play. Controls are responsive but take a bit of time to get used to. AI in the game is pretty good and challenging, enemies coordinate to flank, throw grenades or rush to melee. Exploration and puzzles provide a nice change of pace from the intense fire fights, puzzles are challenging enough that you don't need to look at a guide.

Downside, the micro-transactions for "virtual card collectibles" that thankfully do not impact the game play. Console game publishers and devs need to stop and leave the micro-transactions for the "pay-to-play" mobile games and MMOs.

Overall, playing Rise of the Tomb Raider is a fun and immersive experience. Its like watching a movie and playing a game at the same time. The game is worth playing and at current sale prices (bought mine $15 brand new), its a must have game for the PS4.

Lara Croft has returned to PlayStation with her 20 Year Celebration edition of Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix’s Rise of the Tomb Raider. The follow up to 2013’s Tomb Raider, fans have been eagerly awaiting the next installment of the rebooted franchise, and now after a year-long wait, PS4 owners can experience Lara’s next adventure; does Rise of the Tomb Raider live up to the twenty year legacy of this award winning franchise, or is it a failed expedition that could derail the progress its predecessor set?
    The Good
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is packaged with concept art from the creators and fan art submitted in celebration of twenty years of Lara Croft. Along with this collection of art, the game comes with every add-on available during the first year of its release, and new content as well. This includes VR support for “Blood Ties”, new “Ultimate Survivor” difficulty mode, new outfit and gun inspired by Tomb Raider III, 5 classic Lara skins, Baba Yaga: The Temple of the Witch, Endurance Mode, Cold Darkness Awakened, 12 outfits, 7 weapons, and 35 Expedition cards. With all of the additional content offered, players can feel good about paying full price for a game that is technically a year old; in the end you actually save money compared to those who bought the Xbox 1 copy last year and then purchased all of the subsequent DLC afterwards.
The story in this game is a proper continuation from where we last left off. Players see the aftermath of the previous adventure where a survivor was born, and the ripples it created in Lara’s life. The adventure progresses at a steady pace, and no plot-point is left unresolved.
The emphasis on resource gathering is a welcome addition, forcing players to hunt, forage, and look for supplies to upgrade their weapons and gear. Players must also gather collectables to increase their knowledge of ancient languages in order to find valuable artifacts. This game keeps the player from having anything handed to them, forcing them to earn the valuables they seek.
    The Bad
The inability to blind-fire from behind cover becomes a problem as the amount of combat Lara is subjected to increases; when enemies are both running to your position and firing from a distance, the battles can feel aggravating, especially for those playing on survivor or ultimate survivor mode. The brutality seems toned down compared to the last installment, and while many may enjoy the lack of graphic visuals, it was a major component of the rebooted franchise – this isn’t your old Tomb Raider game, and this isn’t Lara Croft as you’ve experienced her before.
Lack of dual-wielding pistols; at the conclusion of Tomb Raider, Lara defeats the final boss by firing two pistols simultaneously as an homage to the classic weapons of choice that have populated the series since the first game. While this is about the beginnings of Lara Crofts journey, this installment didn’t even offer a nudge to the classic weapons. The end of the last game insinuated that we would see a development in Lara’s arsenal, but players are left with more of the same from the previous installment.
    Rating
10 – Rise of the Tomb Raider is a welcome addition to an already amazing franchise, not only continuing the journey set out from the 2013 reboot, but standing on its own as an excellent Tomb Raider game. This Lara Croft is a very human character, and while she isn’t the dual-wielding bad ass she was in previous years, it’s clear to see that she is well on her way. The 20 Year Celebration Edition for PS4 is the complete experience and then some, providing everything a gamer could want and more in a full-priced game. This game is the reason for owning a PS4.

In terms of graphics, it is, of course, an upgrade - everything looks more detailed and redesigned Lara is a sweetheart, no kidding.

In terms of gameplay, it is neither a step forward nor backward, as it is exactly the same game as in 2013, only set in different environments, and with more upgrades to unlock. There is still a dissonance between the cutscene caring Lara and gameplay Lara butchering dozens of soldiers without remorse and even performing absolutely unnecessarily violent executions like putting a shotgun to a person's chin and pulling the trigger. The lack of a dedicated cover button is still annoying, as is the abundance of collectibles. Seriously, I don't remember the previous game too well, but this time around there is just way too much grinding for different resources, relics, documents, caches, strongboxes, challenges, etc. The game just tries to stretch itself so that it can boast larger completion time.

The storyline, though, is just atrociously bad. The centuries-old evil secret society with seemingly unlimited resources on the hunt for the same treasures Croft is after, really? An ancient primitive tribe living in some miraculously warm and humid valley in modern-day Russian Siberia?? Some old woman imposing as a witch from a Russian CHILDREN FAIRYTALE instilling terror within anyone who stumbles upon her??? All this ridiculous crap is only made worse by absolutely boring borderline cringy dialogue which is unbearable to listen to. All Lara's moaning about her father's death completely fails to resonate with the player, as you just don't care for any single character in this game, and her father was shown to have killed himself, for crying out loud, even if it's implied in the end that he did not. You just can't take all this talk that "my father died for this" seriously if you are told that he freaking killed himself!! Hell, I only found out that Jonah is a recurring character from the previous game from the game's wikipedia!

Overall, ROTTR is playable and more or less enjoyable, but its attempts to strike some middle ground between cinematic linear Uncharted and open-world crafting hunting Far Cry are not successful. When the game goes linear, it's mostly fun, even though the setpieces are limited to the already outdated "run forward while everything around you blows up". When the game goes semi-open-world, it quickly gets tedious and boring. And yes, people saying that this is better than Uncharted 4 either have not played it or are paid off or something, because not only U4 does it better with the shooting and climbing mechanics, beautiful graphics and smooth animations, but in that game you care about the story and the characters (even if Sam Drake is probably the weakest side character in the series), whereas here I'll forget all these names in a couple of days.

You should buy this game , no doubt, but dont think for one minute your getting anything like the original games.

Other negatives for me are the way game "holds your hand" when trying to work out where to go , or what to find. with one press of a button it will "light up" the way for you, and things you need to gather "glow" so you dont miss them. These options can be turned off of course, but its too easy to use the option when you get stuck., and i miss that part of Tomb Raider, hence the lower score. But this is a great game. Go get it.

Compared to the previous title, this game is quite disappointing. The story line is flat and the game play provides nothing new. The game feels and plays exactly the same as the original with nothing new to bring to the table. For the trophy hunters the platinum and DLC trophies are a huge grind and will take some time to complete.

Rise of the Tomb Raider did a fantastic job expanding on the gameplay and graphics, and the story was very interesting and well thought out as well. Overall, however, I'd say that while it's really really close, I do prefer the previous game just slightly. Obviously it lacks in some areas, but it felt more grounded and personal. Rise of the Tomb Raider certainly amps up the action and the set pieces are more interesting, and more complex, but it doesn't quite match the introduction of the character, which was more mysterious, gritty, and focused more on survival and surprise. I also feel like the original had a stronger musical score. Rise of the Tomb Raider uses some dynamically generated music, which is a cool idea, but I don't feel like the score is as powerful or emotional. The ending also didn't feel quite as "epic" as the original did either.

That being said, these are all ultimately nitpicks as I gave both games the same rating. While it doesn't quite reach the original in some areas, it definitely surpasses it in others. The visuals are more stunning and fit the current gen much more than the original, although still not quite at their full potential, considering the game was designed with compatibility with the Xbox 360 in mind. However, the world is far more interesting to look at, with a wide variety of different locations and set pieces that continue to amaze. The gameplay is much deeper than the original with more weapons, upgrades, and a deeper crafting system in play. For people who care about gameplay more than anything else, they will like this game much better than the original. However for me, the story, setting, tone, and supporting characters just weren't as good as the last game, although the new character Jacob was very well done, and the mythology behind the game was much more deeply thought out. This game also has much larger "mini open world" spaces that have tons of side missions and collectibles, which add a lot of replayability.

Ultimately, compared to the last game there are things that make it better, and other things that don't quite match up. Overall, I would say they both rank at approximately the same level of quality. That being said, there are two games this game will likely be compared to a lot, and those are Uncharted 2 and 4. People will compare it to Uncharted 2 for showing how a sequel compares to the original. In that sense, I think Uncharted 2 was a much more impressive improvement over the original. Uncharted 4 will also be compared to this game for a more current-gen comparison. However, in that comparison I also have to give it to Uncharted. Uncharted 4's visuals and gameplay were far more impressive than RotTR, and Uncharted 4's story and musical score was just absolutely perfect, but both were solid games.

In the end, if you liked the 2013 Tomb Raider game, you will like this one just as much. Some may like it better, some may like the other better, but they're both great games that deserve all the success they can get. I can't wait to play this a few more times to find all it has to offer. I also plan on checking out the DLC soon, including the VR mission, which was a nice touch.

i give a 9 because the story is not great. The lore is awesome however, but the plot is poor. Otherwise the game is a jewel of gameplay, graphisms, animation and level design. This is better than UC4 from my perspective, not mentioning the fact that this edition comes with a lot of extra content.

Rise of the Tomb Raider is an average third person action game. I thought the reboot a couple of years ago was pretty good, it was the kick in the teeth that the franchise needed. The problem with RoTR is that it is veeeeery similar to the reboot.
The graphics are fantastic and but the gameplay is pretty run of the mill, its just not a big enough step up from a few years ago. Upgrades are back and straight forward, but sometimes they go too far by giving her too many buffs and advantages. The story is just more Tomb Raider, its Indiana Jones, rinse and repeat; Lara gets in the usual predicaments, captured, thrown around, beaten down, stranded etc. Again, its really nothing new, but what else could I expect?
The Tomb's are actually present in this game and are a welcome addition, they're all relatively straight forward puzzle rooms which, when solved, result in unlocking an upgrade which will aid in over powering you further.
Combat is as expected, solid third person action, stealth and cover based shooting. Stuff is scattered around the environment which can be used to craft bombs, molotovs etc. all of which are handy and can be buffed by upgrades to make them even more powerful.
The environment is pretty spectacular as expected and varied to fit the theme, dangerous animals populate each section which (of course) can be killed and looted for supplies.
Collectables are scattered literally everywhere, collecting them awards you with XP, there are all sorts of things to pick up, most of which unlock the usual "guy reading letter" type reward, seriously do developers actually think people listen to these things?! Every time Lara first sits at a campfire she goes into a monologue about what she's going though, I found these tiresome and didn't really compliment the experience as a whole.
The backtracking because you don't have certain upgrades/equipment is a total bore. Its a sign of the developer trying to milk the game so it takes longer to complete. I feel its totally unnecessary and when you do eventually track back to past areas you are too OP for anything to cause you a worry. I can't stand this type of gameplay! And "Score Attack", don't get me started.
Lastly the game is too easy, even on Survivor difficulty it doesn't really offer up much of a challenge.
RoTR is really average, by the end of the game it capitulates into out right plagiarism, the final boss "battle" is a rip of of Ellie vs David from Last of Us, super, super dumbed down, and way easier. Lara is a one-woman-killing machine who, frankly, belongs in something like COD because of the way she dolls out punishment. This is a AAA pop-corn for the masses action game at its finest, all its needs is micro-transactions oh, wait

First of all, graphics are amazing, one of the best I've ever seen on PS4, both characters and settings are absolutely realistic.
Settings are breathless, not too varied being always in the same area but amazing and well-finished.
Unlike its prequel, Lara has more abilities and skills to improve, in this new one she can also swim under water, climb on trees, hide herself in bushes to avoid enemies and use a grappling hook! All of this, added to more tools to collect to upgrade guns, moreover she can also change her outfit and each one has a different bonus. In the previous one, you had just 4 weapons and both hunting and gathering were almost useless, they just gave you some xp. While in this one, like in Far Cry, you have a wide range of weapons and you have to kill a bear to obtain its fur and create a holster, or you need to collect mushrooms and wood to make poisoned arrows, just for instance.
Map is twice (or even three times) as big as the prequel and the gameplay is very long, to finish the story you need to take 15 hours, but if you want to explore the tombs, follow secondary missions etc. you can take even more than 30 hours (including also included DLCs and the manor).
Another aspect that I've enjoyed are the tombs. I complained about TR 2013 because of the tombs, in my opinion they weren't enough (just 5) and too easy to raid. While in this new one they are a dozen, more difficult, longer to explore and also more gorgeous.
Then, the feature which I found less interesting: the story. In TR 2013 it was about a myth like in this one, but I found it more captivating and detailed in the previous game.
In conclusion, Rise of the tomb raider is an epic game with stunning settings, a lot of things to do (you never get bored), quite difficult fights in which stealth could be a good strategy, but with a not very captivating plot. By the way, there will be a sequel, and if they put together all the improvements of Rise of the TR with the captivating story of TR 2013, an epic masterpiece will be born.

It was interesting to read documents and ancient scripts, listen to allies and enemies dialogs, learn more about some artifacts.

All in all, this game surpasses the previous part of the franchise. It provides much bigger and more beautiful gaming world, more complicated and challenging hidden tombs, more impressive and real combat, better animation, some unobtrusive RPG elements (which make the game more appealing). RotTR is a right mixture of action and exploration. It reminded me of the previous TR games (AotD and Legend). Great game, which will fill several of your evenings with a spectacular, breathtaking adventure and won't make you bored. It continues the idea implemented in the first part and converts it into a decent sequel. With the latest 1.06 patch the game provides a very smooth experience. Kudos to Nixxes! I only hope the next Crystal Dynamics game won't be delayed by 11 month for PS platform.

Lara's character is worse than the previous game. This is an Assassin's Creed clone and its just like a million other games. This isn't worth your time. Other than that, this game is absolutely amazing. It was sort of an impulse buy for me because i had an RPG burn-out and i hadn't played a Tomb Raider game in a long time. Also didn't play the one from 2013. Seeing the positive reviews, i expected it to be good and that i would like it. But it's even better than i thought. It looks gorgeous, the combat is fun, the tombs and levels are incredibly well designed. The story is not super and a bit cliché. But still it's good enough and told in a way you will feel connected. The upgrades and skills make it even more addictive. And the extra dlc and content certainly makes it worth its price. Amazing game that i see myself putting a lot more hours into it then expected. Story and gameplay-wise, Rise of the Tomb Raider doesn't disappoint. It's a thrill to play, and the play mechanics don't ever get in the way of your enjoyment. It doesn't quite capture the brutal, raw feeling that I loved so much about the first one, but I also appreciate that this one isn't just a rehash. Game Play is great, environments are beautiful, character animations are top notch. AI is pretty basic, I would suggest playing on harder difficulties for any hardcore gamer out there. My only real gripe with this game is the story. Unlike the last Tomb Raider game that came out in 2013, which had an amazing story, Rise of the Tomb Raider pretty much steals the plot right off of Uncharted 2. Cmon writers need to get a little more original then copy and paste.

It's lack of an intriguing storyline relying on ridiculous supernatural plot is even more obvious that before. Uncharted 4 improved a great deal in this area and I really hope this does too in future installments. The side quests never felt like that added any story, but to add lots of checklists to an area. I have a tendency to be a completionist, I found everything in the TR reboot, but I feel all Square Enix have done is add checklists and think this that adds content, I didnt bother to attempt them it this time.

The game is lacking in difficulty too, often there are just too many enemies from everywhere, but bizarrely you take very little damage. The casing point, in an end game battle my controller died, I was able to go to pick up my spare controller, sync it and still not die. Maybe fewer harder enemies?

In short, I love this type of game, the treasure hunting was done very well, the tombs & crypts were impressive. The lack of a realistic or engaging storyline and difficulty meant that that finishing the game was of little interest.

I played this game for nearly 100 hours and has done every thing possible. Baba Yaga DLC, Expedition and Croft Manor were really interesting addition to main game. Visuals and graphics are one of the best i have seen on PS4. Great story and satisfying puzzles.

The only thing that needs a little bit tweaking in this game would be the weapons. Mainly everyone uses bow and arrow and that weapon has no flaw. But other weapons like handgun, rifle and shotguns aren't really fun to use. Also I would love to see powerful human bosses in the next game.

I've said on many sites many times that I don't understand brand loyalty at all just buy both systems and stop hammering the other, I mean you can pick up ps4 and X1 for around £120 pounds Stirling now, so there not exactly expensive by anyone's standards, sorry to rant on and on people but I just don't see the point in this 0 out of 10 scoring, there is no chance in hell this game is any were near that. It's been awhile since I wrote a review, but I feel compelled to speak on this game's behalf__ it's that GOOD!
Ingenious level and tomb design, exemplary balance of adventure, combat, and progression, and refreshingly it's cerebral as well as visceral. The artistic design is peerless; it's gorgeous. Have fun!

Tomb Raider 2 is a superb game in any way. The only reason I do not give it 10 is the difficulty. I played on the hardest and still did only die when I miss jumped and almost never in combat. That was a pain in the ass to return to camp for miss jumping. The first game was quite hard on the toughest difficulty but this was quite easy.

Tomb Raider 2013 is one of my most favorite games ever.. Needless to say I was excited to play the sequel..
Unfortunately, they dropped the gritty tone of the original to chase uncharted….
Lara sets out to uncover a mystery her father was mocked for..
This game starts out in the Serbian mountains and the majority of the game keeps you in the snow covered mountains…
And of course there are bad guys after the same artifact you are..
    So youre not alone…
The tomb raider reboot introduced a crafting system which has been brought back, but this time feels much more in the background..
You can gather items and hunt animals for materials to craft bandages and upgrade your weapons…
But none of this is forced…
And much like the past game you upgrade your weapons at a campfire, which also acts as a fast travel point and a place for you to spend your skill points as you level up…
Rise of the tomb raider feels much more linear this time around..
The world doesn’t really feel as connected as the original…
Its for the most part a linear path that you traverse with climbing aces and ropes..
The game feels much more like assassins creed this time around because of this…
It gives uncharted 4 a run for its money with how much climbing you actually do here…
As well as the series as a whole during the few epic chase sequences qhich are easily some of my favorite moments in the entire game…
When you aren’t climbing there are a few openish sections you can explore but the mistake the original made is back as well with secrets being locked off until you progress further in the story to unlock the needed tool and come back...
This is a cheap tactic to prolong gameplay hours…
but more so its frustrating and ironically discourages exploration…
Why look around when 1 in 2 areas is going to tell me to come back later?
I might as well just ignore everything and run forward..
This is what I ended up doing..
Fortunately rise of the tomb raider is gorgeous, and traversing the parquor sections and solving environmental puzzles old fans will be happy to see returned outside of just being secrets is a great deal of fun…
And the 3rd person shooter combat feels decently nice, its not uncharted good, but its passable.. you have the option to stealth or shoot your way through most sections… you can also dodge attacks and counter….
The puzzle pieces are all here for this to be a masterpiece of a game…
except theyre missing the center piece… the one thing that makes all of this come together and work for uncharted in such a beautiful way…
    And that’s character…
Theres not a single well written character in this entire game…
    This includes lara…
The original this wasn’t so.. the game felt so real and you felt so vulnerable.. not only having to survive enemies but the environment.. I cared the entire way.. here however youre just a girl Nathan drake with 0 personality…
Which ultimately makes this feel like just a generic third person shooter experience…
There was no reason to stray away from the unique gritty adventure they had going on with tomb raider 2013, but they did and the feel of the game suffered for it
And Im not sure if this story was game of thrones inspired, but it felt pretty copy and paste making every turn so predictable, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing if again the characters had character, but they didn’t.. I wasn’t invested in the story at all…
The PS4 20 year celebration version also comes with all of the dlc…
Endurance which can be played either single or co op where youre tasked with surviving by eating food and gathering resources.. Very fun idea, but the challenges for the trophies wont unlock unless they are an active challenge, which if youre trophy hunting kills all reason to continue if there are no more trophy related challenges to do…
cold darkness which is a stealth zombie dlc where you have to infiltrate a research base for a chemical weapon
as well as Baba Yaga and Blood ties which ill be reviewing on their own as they are each about an hour long expansion with their own stories..
While I do wish the characters were better written in Rise of The Tomb Raider, I still feel is a quality experience, well worth your money if youre a fan of action adventure…
I Give Rise of The Tomb Raider..

The motivation was dead after a few hours.

To be honest, the game is well polished, graphics are good, voice acting is fine and lara ain't **** around like she did in the first game. But en contraire the first one was way better because it was far more logical. Example: You start the game in the siberian tundra with a bow, while beeing constantly attacked by heavy armed forces. After approx. 5 hours, Lara finally decides to pick up a **** gun. Why? Nobody knows.

(Which unlocks many of the high tier weaponry way too early!!!! Which sort of ruined my experience until I refused to use them until the actual ones were unlocked.)

What I really did like, was the side missions, tombs and supplemental material (the notes, artifects, etc) which seemed to have more correlation with what was going on in-game.

The cherry on the top is the survival modes, time attack and DLC; which were all pretty enjoyable.

Rise of the Tomb Raider isn't as good as the first in regards to the campaign, but it makes up for it pretty well with everything else.

Survival mode is very challenging and fun and balances well, with the easier campaign.

The game plays very nicely, though I have the feeling the controls are a little bit less working than in the first game, the atmosphere the game has is just wonderful and Lara is simply "one kickass woman who rocks entirely". I was a bit worried at first that the most obvious natural setting would be shown almost all the time - the snowy one - but I was really glad when I noticed it was a mix. Great snow areas, sunny forest and lake area, a few ruins here and there, definitely superb.
However, it was a bit underwhelming that certain parts just reminded too much of moments that happened in the first game. I do not mind that much in general but this feeling definitely does not need to be this strong for part 3. Also a few battles were a bit frustrating when compared to the others but I can live with that.

All in all a great and recommendable game that was worth for me to wait 3-4 years.

I would like the franchise to go back to the old Tomb Raider while retaining the new mechanics and animations, more tombs to explore, more ancient ruins, secluded places to visit. While it starts promising, it the same dumbed down run and shoot at stupid Artificial Intelligence for the rest of the game like in 2013. The game has so much potential to be a truly Tomb Raider with such a great identity built over the years, why it tries to mimic other games? Expand

The game suffers from a sever case of input lag. When pressing a button you will find that the action happens about half a second after, which isn't too bad in platforming situations as you can adjust, but it really falls down during combat sections.

For the record, I'm playing on Survival difficulty which removes aim assist, but the camera controls are so clunky it's borderline unplayable during said sections. It's been a long time since I've been so frustrated at a game, but with unresponsive controls like these it's not hard to see why. Just trying to slightly adjust your aim is a tedious battle, especially in fast and frenetic combat.

I don't understand how the developers got the 2013 reboot so right, only to get the sequel so, so wrong with control issues as bad as this. I went into this game wanting to love it as much as I did the previous one, but I can't bring myself to carry on until these issues are fixed.

I feel it would be disingenuous giving this game a higher score as it's beyond time that games are allowed to slide by due to pretty graphics, amazing voice acting or purely due to brand loyalty. A game should stand up on it's gameplay alone and Rise of the Tomb Raider falls flat.

I'm not sure if it was the glowing reviews that came out for this game when it hit Xbox One almost a year ago, but my expectations for this game were high, and it didn't deliver at all what I had hoped.

I'm not sure if it was the glowing reviews that came out for this game when it hit Xbox One almost a year ago, but my expectations for this game were high, and it didn't deliver at all what I had hoped.

Now let me start by saying this, I LOVED the 2013 reboot. And as I head into Rise of the Tomb Raider i was extremely interested in exploring more of this new Lara Croft.

But what what this game gives us...is more of the same with a few minor gameplay tweaks. Let me stop you there, of course you can make that argument against the Uncharted series, but the Uncharted series at least makes the effort to tell a better more engaging story time and time again.

While playing Rise of the Tomb Raider, I found myself growing more and more frustrated with the story being told. I had no reason to care about Lara's paper thin relationship with her father. I had no reason to care about Lara's motivations to clear her family name. And I had no reason to care about the characters she met along the way.

They could have told a much better story if Lara was much more skeptical about this expedition. In the small snippets of information we gather from her relationship with her father it sounds like he was extremely absent minded and neglected his daughter a lot. There is a lot of missed opportunity for great story telling. A much more character driven story could have been told if Lara throughout this journey was coming to the realization that her father was deluded and the divine source didn't actually exist...all the while being followed by this shadowy organization (Trinity) whose leader is just as deluded as her father (only to then be proven wrong, find the divine source at the end of the game and realize her dad was right). But no...right from the get go Lara is all in from the beginning and she never wavers.

Not only is the story extremely straight forward, we learn nothing new about Lara herself. This woman has absolutely no personality at all. When you're directly competing against Uncharted and the ultra charming Nathan Drake, you need to make sure we care about your character.

Now the minute to minute gameplay is fun. But not much has changed when compared to what we got in 2013. Now i typically wouldn't care about this...but as I said with Uncharted...if you fail to tell a more compelling story than last time then it's a lot easier to notice what changed in the gameplay and what didn't.

So we got the same gameplay and a much weaker story. That is why i'm giving this game a 5. It was extremely average. I pales in comparison to the Uncharted series where the adventure is always exciting and the characters you meet along the way are memorable.

Average at best! Maybe it didn't wow me as I recently played Unchartered 4 which is ten times better than this.

Graphics are ok, story average, excitement poor - serious, get Unchartered 4 instead.

I thought this was supposed to be one of the best games out there? It isn't.

I've been playing for three days now, and I'll probably update my score when I'm done with the main story, but so far I have to say I'm disappointed. One of the things that intrigued me about the game when I started was the number of difficulties you could select. I imagined playing on "survivor" would mean

One of the things that intrigued me about the game when I started was the number of difficulties you could select. I imagined playing on "survivor" would mean a shortage of resources and ammunition, and all that seemed really exciting, but I was very wrong. I never have trouble with resources or crafting items, the game isn't challenging at all. In fact, I'm not using skill points because I'm afraid that would only make things easier.

Other than that, the game isn't very.. innovative, for lack of a better word. I don't care for the characters so far, and the combat feels really outdated. The graphics are good, but there are a few occasional bugs that can ruin certain animations.

There are a lot of side activities, but there isn't much of a reason to be doing them when I don't need new weapons or new upgrades. I don't need them because I'm doing fine with my default pistol.

I had high expectations for this because I liked the reboot from 2013, but I wasn't expecting it to be so bland.

Jogo bem abaixo do título anterior. Gráficos são lindos, mas gameplay é sem graça, a história é fraca, a representação da Lara está ridícula de ruim, a ambientação e openworld do game é sem graça e nem chega aos pés da dos jogos clássicos... Cópia piorada de Uncharted

Since the last Tomb Raider I am again a big fan of the franchise. Square Enix again delivered a great title, bravo. I had a lot of fun throughout the play-through. In terms of fun factor, better than Uncharted 4, overall probably just slightly above the last Nathan Drake adventure, or maybe it's a draw. Great game.

Was a breeze, really. The game is not linear, there are lots of side quests. I would like to note the graphics of the game - it is just amazing, especially in 4K! Waiting for the continuation..

The game did not age a bit while it awaited its PS4 release. It’s still fantastic and looks stunning. [13/2016, p.71]

One of the best modern action adventures has finally arrived to PS4. Except a few small issues this version is a success, moreover, you will get all DLC along with the game; you can play in co-op and you will experience and extraordinary trip to Lara's home –  even with the support of VR. Set high difficulty, turn off auxiliary indicators and enjoy the Tomb Raider with everything that goes with it.
