However, side quest are pretty much worthless because upgrades are pretty much worthless. I bought this game for 75% off and still feel ripped off. If you should accidently be forced to play this game. Focus one the story, don't bother with stealth and bring the best guns you can to each fight. Can you believe you can shoot a rifle to put a near enemy down like you are using a shoot gun? Yes you really can do that because the weapon system is so unbalanced and without any necessity of selecting in different situations. Just blow every far and near enemies with your god blessed rifle, babie!

Do you believe you can kill any legendary fierce animals with repeated X evading and △ fighting back?Yes, you can do that becaues there is no tatics in that. I eliminated 6 wolves in a cave with this single move, you get hurt from time to time but not a single blow can really waste you, so you will kill'em all just with this stupid move.

Sure there are some shining moments in this game, but from my point of view, 9-10 is not a score this game deserves. If I am a new tomb comer I can give it 8, but as a tomb raider serial player, when comparing with the exciting tomb raider 2013(I will give 9 to that game), I wll give this game 6-7, which I think is proper.

Why can't I just buy the core game for $20?

What if after the core game, I am good, and don't need/want any additional content. What is the worth of the DLCs and others that I will not play? As a PS4 consumer, I don't have the option to just have the core game and decide later if I would like additional content. Why make it a bundle, just to justify the $60 price tag.

Against my better judgement, I didn't wait to buy this used and went full impulse buy because I loved the first one so much. I didn't want to spoil it for myself so I avoided watching it on YT and spoilers. I've just finished and am going through it again in hopes that I will find it more enjoyable the second time around, but I can't help feeling like it's missing something pretty substantial. First, what I enjoyed:

    - Croft Manor - Very well done, decent storyline, creepy effects done well. I enjoyed this little side story more than the regular game.
    - Premise for the story, the mythology behind the main plot was intriguing
    - The animals
    - Baba Yaga - Totally enjoyable and in line with my expectations. Decent little story even though I guessed the plot pretty early.
    - No QTE. THANK YOU!
    - The main antagonist was well written and balanced.
    - The tombs has rewards of substance, unlike the first game
    - Lara's character was obviously more mature after Yamatai, I appreciated the character development

    What I didn't like:

    - When collecting ammo or other loot, have to press square twice before it picks it up. I thought it was only my controller but apparently it's an issue others are having as well. While it is merely annoying when scouting, it is infuriating when fighting.
    - Very, very little content and time spent in at the first location. Story/plot was barely engaging and pretty cursory.
    - Environment was pretty bland for both Syria and Siberia
    - Getting additional weapons felt like it took forever. I don't know if that is really the case, or whether I noticed it because of the lack on engaging story
    - I loved the main ally. Unfortunately he's the only one I ended caring about. Didn't really connect with the rest of the group despite talking to everyone.
    - Combat wasn't as interesting or exciting save for a couple of locations.
    - Many of the puzzles were just boring and tedious
    - Really didn't care for having to craft the special ammo or being in control of the lighting in dark places. I find these to be artificial constructs and just end up being annoying and adding nothing to the experience

All in all, I would have spend $30-$40 on this game. It's not as good as the first one, but definitely better than Uncharted 4, which was a HUGE disappointment, IMO. I'm not sure if this is a keeper yet, but I am definitely going to buy the Tomb Raider Definitive Edition for the PS4 because I LOVE that game.

This is going to be a very subjective review, but here it goes. Back in 2013, I was blindsided by Tomb Raider and gave it a 10. Uncharted with rpg elements, my mind was blown. Back in 2013, I was blindsided by Tomb Raider and gave it a 10. Uncharted with rpg elements, my mind was blown. Now we have the sequel to that game, and while it is safe to call this a good game, I wished it would've been more "fresh". After all it is literally more of the same of the 2013 game, but with a new story/characters and a tad-bigger open world. First the positives. The action set pieces in this game are wonderful and a treat to play when it triggers. The open world is bigger and there are more tombs to explore, collectibles to collect, an even a few side quests thrown in to mix things up a little. I enjoyed all of these elements, although to an extent. The rpg elements and general gameplay are carbon copy of the 2013 version, so in my book it's also good. And that's when my complaints about this game arise. There is literally nothing new about this game, except for a couple gadgets and story which in my opinion was generic, made worse by the fact there were no character development in this game at all; everyone you meet was just to push you toward the next objective. The game felt soul-less in the story and character standpoint, and my second time around with Lara, I realized how devoid of personality she has throughout the game. Without a good story, and game play that felt actually like the same in 2013, not to mention the animals and rpg level up system is about an 90% copy and paste job from 2013, I just wished there were more new things in this game. It's an bigger open world, but we do the exact same thing in the 2013 reboot. Yes, there are more tombs, but they were all very simple, ok at best. The worst part is the rewards were unsatisfying. To end, it may seem like I hated this game, but I enjoyed it, although not to the extent of an uncharted or even its 2013 counterpart. I just really wished it added on from the 2013 game for this one, and seeing as I didn't enjoy the story, the game play just felt too similar for me to enjoy it as much as I did in 2013. Probably a high 7 in my book. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Overall, I had a blast with this game over the course of 3 or so days but it's not without its flaws inherent to the genre and open-world trend. While the gameplay is mechanically almost perfect and the story well-paced, intriguing and engaging, I feel (and it's not a feeling exclusive to Tomb Raider) that overwhelming amount of meaningless collectibles cheapen the experience and artificially make it too long.

SPOILER. This feeling is especially present in the game's final area that opens up when the feeling of urgency should be dominant. END SPOILER

Not hating on the documents though, they were very well made and add flavour to the world. I also loved little nods to original series, especially with wild animals encounters. Another baffling flaw is dropping framerate on PS4 Pro in performance mode.

Full disclosure, the game came with PS+ subscription which made it totally worth the spent time. I wouldn't pay the full price though.

Like many here I loved the first Tomb Raider game. Although the setting is now frosty Siberia It plays more or less the same. Unfortunately I found the experience largely forgettable, as it lacked the "wow" moments from the first game. It's pretty much the same thing, a solid experience, just not as exciting as the original.

By no means awful, Rise of the Tomb Raider is just the most normal, benign sequel out there. It's a retread of Tomb Raider with fancier graphics, slightly less polish and a lot less excitement. It's a diminishing return, though, which makes me worry a third installment will have to try a lot harder to impress.

The story this time around is much more predictable and cookie cutter - if you can't see what's coming you're just not paying attention. Lara herself is really not quite as interesting as she used to be, with her only growth as a character is the coming to terms with her father's mysterious suicide, offering a lot less than its predecessor. Gameplay is what you'd expect, with all too familiar set piece moments and gunplay/platforming. RPG elements are back, adhering to the school of "forgot every little thing I knew just in time for the sequel"; and there's the odd design choice again where Lara can encounter droves of armed enemies only to ever receive specific weapons she already encountered much later, so long as it's part of a cutscene.

Excitement from this game is greatly diminished since the original. Set pieces are identical often, puzzles are even easier this time around, enemies behave exactly the same and even colorful and painful looking death scenes are somewhat absent.

If you're seriously hurting for more Tomb Raider, it isn't awful. But if you want something a little more groundbreaking and exciting then just more of the same and not quite as good - you can afford waiting for it to hit the bargain bin or give it a rent.

I bought Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration from another retailer because I had approximately $20 promotional credit to spend before it expired. What I have to say is this game is not worth $59.99. Not only because it's one year old due to the Xbox One 1 year timed exclusivity, but because of the season pass included. Firstly, the game was advertised on TV as having over 50 hours of gameplay, but the story campaign is only about 5-8 hours long. My play time was 21 hours and 27 minutes with 100% game completion including collectibles meaning the other 10 or so hours were just hunting animals to upgrade skills and gear, collectibles as well as solving puzzles in optional tombs. I felt the vanilla version is worth about $39.99. Here, it's $59.99 with the inclusion of the season pass on the disc.

And so here's where I evaluate the season pass. For the extra $20, only about 2 of the add-on were worth playing for me: Baba Yaga and Croft Manor. And even those missions each were only about 2 to 2.5 hours long. Endurance/co-op endurance, I would never have chose to purchase these. And the Cold Darkness Awakened, played 3 min. of it last night and pulled the disc out right away. I did get the Platinum, but you're required to achieve a par score to gold star each stage. That's just not replay value. It does provide a different experience, but you can really tell it's a really cheap way by the developers to extend the game and make you hold on to it longer before it gets passed on as a used game.

I'm getting rid of this. My experience won't necessarily be the same as yours and I'm sure there are others that will enjoy all the extra content that you're required to buy now. I'm just glad I paid only $40, but I wouldn't have paid $60.

I ve been playing this title on a PS4 Pro with SSD and encounter only slight frame drops during 2 or 3 small cut scenes, beyond that the game ran flawless. Loading times are okay. The fast travel good be faster but it is still acceptable in my opinion. Graphic wise the title delivers stunning visuals and very good effects after all.

The world in Rise of the Tomb Raider is based on a semi open world setup which opens up during the main course of the story but lets the player wander off if he likes too. The controls are pretty much polished and enhanced from the 2013 gameplay. The skill trees, weapon sets and movement is extra ordinarily good and gives room to each personal playstyle. The puzzles are way more enhanced then 2013th establishment and enriches this game quite a lot.

Difficulty wise there is enough room for casual play, regular play and also hardcore veterans, although I found that the regular mode was performing solid might be too easy for more advanced players though. For people that like action adventures such as Uncharted I can only encourage to buy this title. It is from time to time on sale and pretty much a steal for 10 bucks or less. Regular story will take around 10 to 15hrs whereas main play plus or completionist will take you to around 20hrs of gameplay.

Also, after finishing the game, the map is split into zones, which tell you how much % complete each one is -- I find this awesome (hear that 2k ? mafia 2 anyone ?).

SO-SO: the gameplay dynamics, while quite enjoyable, could have been a bit improved, on the 2nd difficulty level (1 above the easiest), it's a bit too easy I found (and the 3rd one up was a bit too hard for a very quick play-through (I had bought rdr2)).

On the easiest you could literally finish off almost all opponents with the melee weapon (which in select cases literally got you stuck - for example the mission "Survive the Ambush by the D******* Ones", if you would melee kill everyone, the gates wouldn't open and you'd literally be stuck - you need to shoot with weapons there). I got very pissed off when I wasted a good hour on that mission ... other stuff like the bow are indeed very fun to use, and make for very interesting stealth approaches in select areas.

BAD: honestly the voice active for Lara I found incredibly annoying - she has a very artificial and forced British accent; I'm not a native speaker and truly love all accents, texan, canadian, australian, scotish british -- you name it I love it -- but when 90% of your energy goes into faking me a posh british accent ... I don't know ... really pissed me off -- you either get used to it or it gets better as you progress through the game. It pissed me off enough to write .. what .. 5 6 lines on it so ... yeah. The divinity and god and what not was also not my favorite topic, but, meh, that I didn't take points away for.

CONCLUSION: especially at what it costs now - it really shouldn't be a game you didn't play - it really is good fun

I have never played a Tomb Raider game before this and the story was still easy to follow. The story is very enjoyable but the gameplay is the main attraction. We play as Lara Croft, an archeologist that is as athletic as she is intelligent, and she is very athletic. Lara uses her ice axes to climbing certain surfaces, a bow and arrow to take out her foes along with a large variety of firearms. Lara's father was a very intelligent man and loved making new discoveries, just like his daughter. Mr. Croft always craved an artifact, in particular, The Divine Source. The Divine Source was known to grand whoever wields it eternal life. Mr. Croft announced that he believed it was real and he will find it. Unfortunately, after many years with no success, people called him a liar. Mr. Croft then killed himself in defeat. Lara sets out on a journey to find the Divine and bring honor back to her, and her father's, name. Although, Lara was not the only one searching for the Divine Source. Trinity is a group of heavily armed people that intend on taking the Source and using it for themselves and will take down anyone in their way. The story is engaging and filled with impossible to predict twists to keep you at the edge of your seat. I give the story an 8.75/10. I only take some points off because it takes a lot from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. That is definitely not anything bad, but it's just not as original as I would have hoped. Thankfully, where it lacks in the story it makes up in the gameplay. This game relies heavily on stealth. If you are not quiet you will die very quickly. With Lara's large variety of abilities that should not happen often. Lara can throw items to distract enemies, climb across ropes to move without being seen, and swing from tree branches to get the high ground. Her most important ability I saved for last while standing still all enemies in her view is marked red or yellow. If they are red that means that another enemy/enemies can see them. If they are marked yellow nobody is looking at them. So if you kill someone that is yellow no one will know until they find the body. If you kill someone that is red they will see and immediately be on high alert. This ability goes very well with your silent bow and arrow for a clean kill. If you do get caught you have many abilities to use in combat as well. You can turn bottles into molotovs and cans into bombs. You also have many different types of arrows and guns that I will not spoil. You unlock all of these abilities as you play. Thankfully the enemies you face do not get stale because there is a large variety of them. With each one, you must know how to approach them. By the end of the game, you would have mastered all of your and their attacks and you will feel invincible. Unfortunately, the end of the game is my least favorite part of the game. There is a final boss that is so unsatisfying to fight against. I ended up trying to cheese them because I was so bored, but that didn't even work. This boss does not test any of the skills you have learned it is so underwhelming. Otherwise, I would have given it a 10/10, instead, I give the gameplay a 9.5/10. If I could have made any changes to the gameplay, without changing the story, it would be to have an ability to through enemy grenades back at them. Also to make a better boss, I don't know how to do that but this boss was not fun. Besides that, it is a wonderful game, and I give it an overall score of 9.125/10 (9/10). If it wasn't for the boss this might be one of my favorite games, but nothing beats Ori and the Will of the Wisps.

While I personally quite enjoyed the 2013 reboot many fans were understandably disappointed with the increased focus on combat rather than exploration and puzzle solving. This follow up certainly redresses the balance by not only introducing better stealth mechanics, but also through the inclusion of optional challenge tombs that each offer a reward or upgrade for solving the contained puzzle.

There are still plenty of faults with this game of course, from the unnecessary hand-holding, intrusive cut-scenes and poor melee combat but as with the first title in this rebooted series I largely enjoyed my time with it and I think fans of the older games will find this more to their liking as well.

This is a tomb raider game: you jump, you shoot, you solve puzzles.
It tries to recaputre the "magic" of the 90s installments, trying to be modernized for current audiences.
The pacing is good, alternating set pieces and more explorative sessions.
The story is predictable, but serves the purpose of the gameplay.
The replay value is high, as you might try to beat the game again with higher difficulty(which changes how the game can be saved or restricts how you can improve the skill tree).
I recommend it, hope that the third installment will keep the charm intact.

Much better than Tomb Raider (2013). This game doesn't feel like a substandard copy of Uncharted. It is of decent length, and the cinematic action-adventure elements are much improved. I also liked how this was mixed with survival in the wild elements; how lara can craft bombs with empty cans and collect mushrooms to make poison arrows. The stealth elements were also much improved.

The optional tombs are still very small in this game, usually providing only one puzzle before the reward. Still would prefer something closer to mini dungeons but these are better than the tombs in the first since they tend to look cooler and the puzzles you have to do feel a bit more inspired.

Combat functions and feels virtually the same as the first, which isn't a bad thing but it's a generic third person shooter with regenerating health. It's still fun but doesn't provide much challenge, I was able to scrap my way through every fight without having to think and only died once because someone punched me off a ledge.

This game doesn't saturate you with action though, so it never gets too repetitive as long as you're exploring the world and trying to find everything. I got 100% and probably only about a quarter of my time was spent in combat situations.

All in all I had a great time with this one, giving it a full score higher than the first for the further improvements to level design.

However, RIse of the Tomb Raider expands the gameplay formula in a beautiful way, adopting mechanics, and systems, of semi open world titles whilst blending them in with the mechanics of its predecessor.

The graphics are fantastic, as you progress the enviroments become incresingly diverse, and the cast of characters is entertaining as it is enjoyable to both listen and watch as the narrative unfolds.

The real highlight of the game for me tho, comes in the form of collectibles, upgrades, puzzles, and tombs that you'll find in increasing amounts through each area of the game, this accompanied with the added dlc, as well as chapter replay elite, and expeditions mode, serve to further increase the replayability and engagement of this title.

The combat system in conjunction with the platforming mechanics and the stealth systems, all contribute to an engaging and at times, surprisingly challenging experience.

If there are any complaints that I have with this game is that at times it can be an overwhelming experience marrowed by a complex ui and multiple goals to complete.

It tends to feel "bloated" after a while, and as such during my first playthrough I felt somewhat "rushed" by some of this systems, feeling like I could only focused on the clearly explained, and marked goals.

However, despite those issues, Rise of the Tomb Raider did ended up becoming a pleseant game to experience through and through, and I would recommend this 20th anniversay version that includes all of its dlc as well as added modes.

Such a slow burn it takes 6 hours for the story to actually get to a point where Lara has some sort of emotion. But once you pass the half way point it really picks up.

Overall its struggled to replicate why the reboot was so successful in the first place ultimately there's no sense of danger you're a killing machine and nothing bothers you.

Sometimes this feels like a good game. When set pieces are crashing around Lara and deadly armies are swarming just out of sight, the game feels exhilarating and polished. When you have Lara climbing the next cookie cutter tree to grab feathers to make more arrows, the game feels like an uninspired chore.

The game is actually quite small and quite short. I think Square Enix needs to know that I am fine with that. In an era when you can play a Fortnite or a Destiny free all day every day, I admire quality over quantity in my single player games. What Rise of the Tomb Raider does to make itself look bigger is add an unrewarding crafting mechanic. You can collect resources such as wood, feathers, and metal chunks to upgrade your weapons and make ammunition. If you ever thought Indiana Jones would be better if had to McGuyver every bullet, then Rise of the Tomb Raider is the game for you. The game also throws in optional missions and exotic animal hunts that reuse areas so Square Enix can further pad playtime. (We know that Lara grew up with privilege, but does she have to flaunt it by hunting down endangered species?). This might be fine in a Red Dead game with giant, open areas. The areas in Rise of the Tomb Raider are laughably tiny.

The game also throws in mandatory battles as roadblocks. The game seems to revel in its stealth mechanics. Lara can sneak up behind enemies to choke them to death or shoot them with a silent arrow. That is until one enemy sees her, and then everyone has X-ray vision to know her position. In some scripted sequences, enemies drop from the ceiling in a pre-alerted state. My gripe with the first Tomb Raider reboot is that the game went full Call of Duty too often and that gripe extends to this sequel. Worst of all, the gunplay is incredibly easy because of how many hits Lara can take in the regular mode. I started using the bow to fight enemies because it added some challenge. Eventually I rushed nearly all enemies to beat them to death with Lara’s climbing ax. The final boss fight is the culmination of all of the terrible combat design in this game. No spoilers except to say that the game mechanics will betray Lara.

The tombs in the game are a mixed bag. Like the Uncharted games, there are puzzles to solve. Unlike Uncharted, the puzzles are all optional. After feeling like I was playing on easy mode, I stopped raiding tombs. All of them are simple physics puzzles that involve climbing and pulling things with rope arrows. There is no need to consult a notebook like in Uncharted. None of the puzzles felt cool.

The star of the game is the environment even if most of the climbable surfaces seem to float in midair rather than part of the natural surface of a cliff face. As Lara climbs these surfaces, they break and fall away in a perpetual rockslide/earthquake. Lara looks light but she must weigh over 2000 pounds, because well worn paths fall to pieces when she steps on them. Later in the game, Lara passes buy armies of deadly killers and they march in unison and she climbs covertly. I think in a better game, Lara would move about silently more often and wouldn’t need to carry an arsenal of weapons on her back.

The story is a non-starter. Square Enix seems to meld the story of Batman with Indiana Jones as Lara goes on adventures because of her dead father. Unlike Batman, she ruthlessly kills about 100 people. Lara even makes Indiana Jones look like a pacifist. There is thing and even though the bad guys don’t know were to find the thing and Lara does, the bad guys will always be one step ahead of Lara. This time around, Lara also makes new allies, and annoyingly apologetic as they keep threatening to kill her. My main complaint is with the tribe of Siberian people that all speak perfect English with a British accent. Lara never considers this to be suspicious.

All-in-all, Rise of the Tomb Raider is mediocre game. On PS4, it is far outclassed by Uncharted 4 in every respect. If you have played Uncharted 4, I recommend playing it again rather than playing Rise of the Tomb Raider. The 20 Year Celebration edition adds a short “Gone Home” style scavenger hunt in Lara’s mansion. This is a nice bonus but adds little to the overall experience. Rise of the Tomb Raider is also infected with micro transactions for score attacks style game modes. I honestly do not know why anyone would keep playing this game after the story ends. I know Rise of the Tomb Raider was not a big seller for Square Enix. One reason for poor sales was their dumb decision to have time exclusivity on Xbox. Another was their inability to make good games.

But lets start at the beginning: It is a story driven exploration game. Lara has grow since the prequel and is on a way to a new adventure because there are things out there that she would not have imagined before and she wants answers. The story again is great with good twists but I must mention that I have seen one mayor twist miles before. The new characters Ana, Jacob, Jonah and Sophia are great. They easily got attached to me and I cared for them. The exploration aspect is improved. The additional tombs are bigger and more challenging. I enjoyed the puzzles and was sometimes impressed by the ideas. The crafting system is robust and here you get even some real side-quests. An addition is the translation system. As you got more proficient in languages you can read some clues on monuments or documents to get additional benefits. There are also some minor improvements here and there. The graphics and soundtrack are really good. Then there is the Baba Yaga DLC for free on the disc. While not relatively long it is intense has a good story and a memorable boss battle. I found this a worthy addition. Blood Ties is a welcome adventure filled with puzzles and riddles. I enjoyed this more detective style adventure a lot. Be warned it has no battles and plays only in Croft Manor / Estate. Can put people off but I enjoyed it. Laras Nightmare is the opposite and while I enjoyed it I would not mind if it was removed. Final rating: The content is excellent and an improvement over the already good prequel. The 20 years celebration however tricked me into thinking it was a best off with more content. I subtract nothing because of this because it is satisfying and the old games would be out of date today especially for the graphics. Expand

Lara is quite plain alongside the story, with an important lack of emotion but her father's will. Like the first game, it feels kinda artificial and poorly design.

Other characters like Jonah or even the main villain itself have a minor importance and they developmente in the story are simple or even unexistent, with a huge lack of real involvement.

Also the plot is practically a copy from the first game, the final fases even fun and good designed, are quite too much similar in many ways to the first, with romans instead of "samurai".

    - Gameplay is simple, find coverage and shot the enemies, there are4 types of weapons with differt variations: bow, primary (rifle, sniper, subrifle), secondary (shotgun), and handgun. Olso the piolet but only for melee.
The problem here is the enemy IA (quite dumb), the design of the stages (normaly small with lots of coverage and pickup objects) and enemies (too armored enemies breaks the flow), crafting (pickup objects are excesive and quite OP) and sometimes camera. Also melee combat is like the first, evade and kill, quite easy, and the healing system can be improved.

The map size is good, but it is not a open world, there is backtracking to collect resources, but again there is no real reward unless you aim to the 100% completion.

Optional cripts are quite similar to the first, except 2 or 3, the rest are simple and a bit dissapointing, i expected more. Also the rewards arent quite useful.

    - The World as I said is good sized and good looking, but there is a lack of impresive environments and cutscenes oftenly interrupts the pace of the game, there are too many when you run and everything goes down, it needs improvement.

    - Extra content (Baba Yaga, Endurance, etc): fun but not really a huge value, Baba Yaha is fun and really rocks, but again the plot is predictable.
Endurance is a survival mode, interesting but it falls in repetition.

    - Overall: good game, fun game but with a lot of issues, Animations, combat system, story, characters, side-missions, environments.
I didn't find myself stuned with a view, like I did with other games. The game tries hard to make it but doesn't deliver, unless not at today's high end quality games.

I find in the saga a lack of identity, that tries to find itself in a genre and with a legendary character that do not reaches the glory of it's past days.
I'm really looking forward to Shadow of the Tomb Raider, I want to see improvement and know if finally that game reaches the top. A similar game only will lead to dissapointment.

    Not good not terrible.
Secon game in relaunch, and it steel same proble as first.
Plot... in this game oh... sometime i think better take plot from game 90's (aliens, Atlantis etc). Cartoon characters, stupid vilians, no normal motivation for main character, and mistic (completely unnecessary) at the end game. So second minus - fight. Still to many, no so much as in firs, but still.

If creator try make slightly less enemies, maybe game feel like more about аrchaeologist
Plus in this game - nice graphic, so cool picture, and the got nice tomb with good riddles.

The other sidequest that I finished was much better and longer, I think some people even considered a game within a game and it's called: Baba Yaga. This took me one and a half hours. Counting this I beat the game in 12 hours in easy mode. When I finished the game I also did the game Blood Ties, which you can do if you feel to. You just have to explore your house to search things. Pretty decent game. Definitely inspires from Uncharted which isn't a bad thing at all and this is what the new reboot needed. I really enjoyed the gameplay when it came to puzzles and climbing. However gunplay and encounters felt stiff and level design wasn't good for encounters. The story is fine nothing too interesting and characters are ok too.

Story is ...okay. The problem is that we the PlayStation players have so many similar games like this that have better story. There is not enough character development to connect with previous and future games. So I could not care for others apart from Lara. Ending dragged a lot. So called “ending boss battle” is just as cliche as you can imagine. And final cutscene clearly sets up "sequel".
There is definitely replayability value but not very high. They were some tedious puzzles, but I had to look up how to solve only once. I am glad that PlayStation gave it for free on PS plus, as I would’ve never bought it really, not a big fan of TR but am a fan of 3rd person games like this. Game is worth it for a heavy discount price I think (or free).
For 2020 the graphics hold up, they are not NextGen but they’re good enough. I would’ve loved to have 60 FPS, but even without it it’s definitely playable.
Bugs: few bugs exist, reload of checkpoint helped.

An excellent action adventure game. Story keeps you interested, though it's nothing groundbreaking. The game isn't such a step up as the previous title was, which is understandable. But the locations are interesting, the controls are tight, the pace is as fast or slow as you want, and there is a fair amount of content and replay value. A quality game, very much worth playing.

The game has so much quality content, new game mechanics, more grounded and less tedious puzzle solving. The skills improvement makes a welcomed comeback with more upgrades, helping to adjust the game to your style, whether it's a stealth or full gun blazing approach. All the weapons have surprisingly deep upgrade system, often those upgrades have a visual impact and sometime audio impact on the weapons.

Exploring caves in side missions got so much larger and more varied than in the previous title. Plenty of the locations are gorgeous to watch and even more exciting to explore.

The only cons I can think of is the ending. I won't be spoiling anything, but for me the last 1-2 hours is too jammed with action and unnecessarily long puzzles. It felt like they tried to be more like Uncharted... which they don't need, they're doing so much better on their own. And that clickbait for the next game... There was no need.

But ignore my nitpicking. This is a great game, especially for the current price, it's a bargain. I'm off to try Rise Of the Tomb Raider dlc.

    What Kind of Adventure?

    Third-Person Action Adventure.

    Was it fun?

Yes, one of the best games of the year. I made a rule for myself where I had to use the Bow and Arrow for basically the entire game. I think I shot maybe, 4 enemies with a gun.

    Are there any similar games?

Its very similar to Uncharted and I don’t think its a bad thing.

What did you think of the story?

I don’t want to go into too much detail about the story right now. I know its still a fairly new game that has come out so I’m going to keep it as brief as I can. It starts out where you’re just following in your fathers foot steps, trying to get to a mythical city so you can stop an evil organization from acquiring a mythical item. I don’t want to go into too much more detail.

The story itself, is kind of stereotypical and the motivation of individual characters are kind of simplistic. I certainly wasn’t blown away by the story but it was interesting enough to keep me interested.

    Favorite Character?

Unfortunately there wasn’t a lot of character development and you really only get to know 4 characters and really only development for Lara. I do like how she evolving in these games and I do think in this game, her character does take a step in the right direction.

In the first game (Tomb Raider (2013), she started out kind of lost and didn’t really know what to do with herself, by the end of that game she kind of finds herself and discovers that she is a super bad ass. At the end of this one, she is Lara Croft, the Tomb Raider. Thats what makes me excited about the future.

    Favorite World/Stage?

The most memorable chapter was when you’re going back to rescue Jonah. There was this under water fight where you’re in the water, under a layer of ice. Now the ice had maybe 4 or 5 holes that you could peek out and kill an enemy. I really enjoyed the idea of it and the way the game wants you to kill the men is by stealthily peaking out the water and pulling an unaware enemy into the water. The problem with it is there would almost always be 3 or 4 together staring down into a hole so it was difficult to individually pick one off.

Additionally the gameplay mechanics limit you from being able to shoot from within the water so the easiest option was often swim to a far way hole. Hop out, shoot 1 enemy and then hop right back into the water and repeat.

    Would you play it again?

This definitely has replayable value and I might replay it again next year. Right now I gave it to my friend to play. I want him to play it so I have someone to talk about this game with.

    Any Complaints?

Maybe the story was a little too stereotypical but I think thats being a little harsh and for what ever reason, I had a tougher time with the platforming elements. There were times where I died and because she didn’t grab onto to a wall or a ledge when I wanted her. It was not common occurrence and very rare but it did happen a few more times than it does with the Uncharted series.

How many hours did you play it?

    Maybe 18 hours.

I loved the beautifully designed tomb puzzles, and of course the scenery and level design is spectacular. However, the climbing got a bit samey after a while.

The 3D model artefacts are engaging, but the narrated documents were tiring. I thought the back stories they told were fantastic, but I sped read through the dialogue instead of listening to the decent voice acting, as there were SO many of them to listen to. It just really broke up the pacing too often. Why couldn't the narrations play in the background while exploring? They could be strategically placed so as not to interfere with other in game sounds.

The rejuvenated Tomb Raider game, first in this trilogy, was a god-send for me as someone who always loved the series but was over the direction it was going. Rise goes one step further and fixes almost all of the flaws of its predecessor and in fact, for me, directly challenges Uncharted for the best game of its kind.

Gameplay is refined, focused and above all ridiculously fun. Traversing the predominantly snowy and ice rugged Siberian landscape is exhilarating, with all the immersion-breaking active time events removed. There's a huge focus on actual tomb raiding for the first time in years with some really challenging puzzles and loads of artifacts to collect, ancient languages to learn and items to unlock. Combat is intuitive and flows well. The difficulty is spot-on. Crafting is kind of silly but ultimately really enjoyable. Making bombs, poison, smoke grenades etc on the fly is great and really becomes essential in later encounters. Lara feels like an absolute machine by the end of the game, which is a blast to play through. RPG elements like clothing choice, skill upgrades and weapon mods are interesting enough but I honestly didn't see a huge different in shotgun varieties for example, so don't know how relevant their stat differences truly were. Her arsenal is amazing though and that's enough for me!

Graphics are stunning in this game, particularly Lara and the environmental effects. Dark caves spring to life via Lara's torch, dusty ruins are impressive in scale and atmosphere and the weather/lighting/explosion/other fun stuff effects are pretty incredible. The DLC adds a huge deal to the story and wold, one by exploring a trippy witch cave and the other, Croft Manor.

My major issue is with the story/other characters. The story is so standard and dull, and never felt truly gripping and the side characters are almost exclusively 2-dimensional. Thankfully, there has never been as much effort put into Lara's characterisation and watching her evolve into a ruthless, almost obsessive killer is fascinating. The situations and people she encounter are slowly morphing her into the competent, sassy and cold character we got to know in the 90s and I cannot wait to see the conclusion in Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Considering Uncharted pretty much stole TR's crown in the 2010s, I firmly believe Lara has wrestled it back from Nathan. What Uncharted holds above TR in terms of narrative and maybe graphical performance, Rise undoubtedly makes up for by being a better game to play. There's more variety, truly engaging combat/exploration and a much more open, involved experience in general. I'm absolutely delighted with the current state of this series!

Lara, now the character is fine, fits well with the game, the story, even the characters ,but at points, she feels so selfish, like oh that was my fault, this has happened because of me, oh I'm sorry I did this, it's those little phrases and speech, that really make me want to skip cut scenes, but it's Lara Croft so I didn't.

The second and last bad point, is the story, though good, as I'll explain later, is at times forced, often feeling rushed, and is a shame because on a whole it flows well with the environments, but can be lackluster at times.

Now the good points, game play well done, now I wasn't expecting Uncharted styled game play, or cryptic puzzles to solve, but what we got was a pact, and well executed function of game play, the various weapons and tools to help during exploration and climbing obstacles was a nice, and the feel of open world was pretty cool too.

Combat, loved it, fluid, clean and made gun fights, and melee feel heart pounding. The range of weapons to fight with was ace, and the ability for stealth was a plus, overall very good when it came to combat.

Story, raiding a tomb, seems the norm, and execution of this said norm was very well done, it's a shame no, quote on quote sexy scenes were present despite the 18 rating, but hey it was good without them none the less, overall gripping and enticing at every corner.

Lastly the characters, now there is Lara, but she was fine, in more ways than one, but the other characters were pleasing, respectable and didn't give me the urge to ignore them, each one having an impact on what happened, even down to the generic enemies, each one had purpose and didn'r feel like placeholders.

On a final note, the game was amazing, the visuals is what I would expect, and for the most part a very tidy game, challenges were difficult at times but never too hard you gave up, and the story and characters seemed polished and purposeful, must say well done, well done indeed.

Rise didn't stand up to the 2013's instalment and it will easily blend with other mediocre games and eventually will fall into the abyss of oblivion.
The franchise can only dream about its long gone fame while being an Xbox exclusivity, smh.

This is one of best games ever made, i love it.
And i totally hate it, when it ends. Not really short, but i neeeeed it to be way longer.
Could be more choices, less linear, but that probably wouldnt be so polished and perfectly tuned up. Ofcourse i, as hardcore rpg player, have some reservations, but still, this game doesnt deserve anything bellow 10/10. Top quality everything, even

The gameplay is way too clunky for all the parkour-style moves you need to pull off. The story is not interesting in the least, and Lara Croft might as well be a cardboard cutout.

The game did not age a bit while it awaited its PS4 release. It’s still fantastic and looks stunning. [13/2016, p.71]

One of the best modern action adventures has finally arrived to PS4. Except a few small issues this version is a success, moreover, you will get all DLC along with the game; you can play in co-op and you will experience and extraordinary trip to Lara's home –  even with the support of VR. Set high difficulty, turn off auxiliary indicators and enjoy the Tomb Raider with everything that goes with it.

All combined, you’re looking at the biggest and one of the most enjoyable Tomb Raiders yet. Here’s to 20 more years. [Christmas 2016, p62]
