For newcomers to the series it certainly offers some help in the form of the assisted mode if you're not comfortable with the survival horror scene. Personally i played in standard mode and had a great time. Managing inventory, deciding whether to run or shoot, searching for keys, clues, and jack handles. I am extremely pleased with my experience. It's also worth mentioning that it's worth playing on PS4 Pro! Expand

The game is really good and a major step in the right direction for the franchise, the only issues is that both campaigns are pretty much the same thing and Claire's face could have been better looking. I hope they add some free DLC side stories to add more value to the game, the story and game play are both well done along with the music/sound effects and the enemies are also well done. The game is really good and a major step in the right direction for the franchise, the only issues is that both campaigns are pretty much the same thing and Claire's face could have been better looking.

Expand

Magnificient... not only for hardcore fans but also for new comers. The RE Engine is sublime.
The reasons why I did not give the game a perfect score are two-fold. First, the lack of some cutscenes that were already in the original one. Second, the missed opportunity to create an intertwined scenario with the two protagonists. The choice of scenario A & B is pretty awkward.

.RE2 retains the things many fans love such as inventory management, puzzles and use of key items, and largely keeps the gloriously silly story of the original game intact. Tank controls and static backdrops are gone, in favour of a more modern third-person over-the-shoulder perspective. This makes combat more intuitive and adds to the immersion.

Playing in the dark, with headphones or a good sound system helps create some truly tense moments, and the sound design is top notch. Often you can hear enemies before you can see them, sometimes on the floors above you, sometimes right around the corner - ready to strike!
The audio/visual experience in RE2 is very polished and the game looks stunning, perhaps due to the use of Capcom's proprietary graphics engine, the RE Engine, which was first seen in Resident Evil 7. There were no noticeable drops in frame-rate or other graphical tech issues during my play through; the game ran solidly and smoothly at all times.

RE2 gives you the option of two different protagonists, Leon or Claire, and depending on who you choose, certain locations and puzzles will be different, but not overtly so. Upon completing the game as one character, you can then play through the second character's campaign. The differences are not huge, but you get to see some more locations and play small sections as sub-characters, which helps flesh out the story.

Combat is satisfying, with a variety of weapons to brutally dismember zombies and destroy the monsters lurking in the shadows, however it sometimes feels clunky and stilted. I found myself wishing for a button command which allowed me to dodge enemy attacks. Capcom have flirted with the idea of a dodge mechanism in the RE:Revelations spin off titles, to various degrees of success, and it would have made sense to include one in RE2, just to help the combat feel more free-flowing.

RE2 is not a massive game and each campaign takes between 6-8 hours depending on how thoroughly you explore and which optional puzzles you choose to complete. Capcom have created an experience which is quality over quantity - it's a tight, slick, and well put together game, just don't expect it to be an 80 hour, open world time-sink; it is simply not that type of game, nor does it try to be.

Overall, RE2 is an utterly fantastic and fun experience, despite some minor concerns. I don't regret paying full retail for it, and I think most Resident Evil fans will eat this up, like a zombie hound chewing on a rotting corpse!

I do think the puzzles were a bit too easy; you'd know where to use it immediatly - the trip there, however, might be the challange of it. But it did keep the pacing at a constant rate, which was good.

The OTS view is excellent. Any other scheme would most likely break the game/immersion. Tank controls would absolutely have ruined it.

The game engine is fantastically optimized, running heavy environment details and atmospheric effects at a AAA level at all times in densly populated areas - if you disagree, do learn more about game engines, what "costs" in rendering, and cross-platform pitfalls in general. Go for PC version if you're a GFX whore, or PS4 (base/pro) for still awesome gfx, and the good 'ol controller.

All in all, the most complete horror game to date - excited for more, and please go for RE3 next! Or any new RE game with the same play-style and atmosphere.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

WO KOMMEN DIE HER?!Das nervt.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For a game that requires multiple playthroughs of the same story in a largely linear way, I was surprised just how fantastic and addictive this was. Coupled with the difficulty and having to look at videos, i found this game not just something i sat down mindlessly playing but something I really had to concentrate on. I hadn't played the original so had no nostalgia. This was a new experience for me, one which I thoroughly enjoyed.

    Pros:

I was genuinely scared when travelling down dark corridors - the zombie placements were really good.
The sound is fantastic. This adds to the tension.
If you like going for trophies and following guides, the game will definitely scratch an itch.
Likewise the puzzles can be a real challenge for anyone looking to solve things independently.
The A - B storylines work perfectly together.
Shooting the zombies is really satisfying.

    Cons:

Playing for extended periods of time got exhausting, especially when going for the speedruns.
If you are looking to mow down waves of zombies you will be disappointed because more often than not you will run past them not killing them.
The boss battles can be extremely challenging. On boss took me over an hour, 20-30 attempts to defeat.
Mr X seems to turn up out of the blue at the most annoying points which I understand is to add to the challenge but created moments of extreme rage.

Whilst I got extremely frustrated in places, I have to give this game a 9. It loses a point because it won't be a game that I will sink 1000s of hours into and if I think about the amount of content, there isn't a huge amount. What there is however, is an extremely tightly woven and polished game which plays fantastically well.

I don't really have anything bad to say about this game other than, personally, I feel like the leap that this game made to the more refined generation of consoles and gameplay makes for a bit more to be desired from a hardcore fan's perspective. Otherwise, near perfection!

I hope Capcom remake Resident Evil 3 and Code Veronica as they did this. The third person perspective is nice, I used to be a die hard fixed camera kind of guy, but I think this works just as well now. A separate fixed camera would be good in addition in future remakes, but as long as the survival horror is retained then the others should succeed.

There is just one thing the developer could have done better.
After playing both Leon (first) then Claire, I wished there story lines would tie in more together and would built more on each others actions.

For example, why I extinguished the fire on the helicopter with Leon and in the second playtrough with Claire as well? I am aware it happened in the original RE2 too, but as the developer mentioned, RE2 is more of a reimagination than a remake, so I think they could have figured another way here.

Beside of this I enjoyed this game to its fullest and can recommend it, can't wait to play RE3 Remake.

Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

While this game is fun and at multiple point I found myself playing for House because I was enjoying it so much, I ran into some annoying parts that messed up the flow of the game. For me, when Tyrant shows up, the game takes a small dip in the fun factor. I go from a lot of enjoyment to annoyance with this huge gray guy that I can’t kill and teleports all around the station and restricts my ability to explore the station - which was my favorite part. You should in no way play this game for the story by the way, cuz it’s real bad. The most fun parts are the moments where the fear sits in when you’re exploring the zombie ridden police station. There were so many parts I was just blown away by how much I actually wanted to explore everything! When I look past the annoying Tyrant and some of the enemies, this is a pretty good game on it’s own right. Expand

Must play horror game. Story may be cliche but it works. The graphics, gameplay, and music are fantastic.

i was not able to play this on plastation 1 because the controls were so bad. The remake is great. I can finally play the story of raccoon city. The only other resident evil games I have played were re 4 re5 and re6. Now I get to see how Leon became the bad ass character from re4

I have to say this new version, surpassed my expectations, I loved I was able to play one of my all time favorites, in a different person view, and with an improved inventory, and shooting. Only down was that it felt too short. Wish I had more new areas we didn't have in the original. Like expand the city a bit more. But I'm happy we got this treat of a game. Expand

this game its one of the best, if not the best remake ever done. i played it on the ps5 and damn, stunning visuals + locked 60 fps feels so good. the puzzles and the game design (and of course the plot) are jaw dropping, and theres a feeling inside you that makes you want to explore the whole thing, all the places to find more supplies and learn more about the lore behind it all. butthis game its one of the best, if not the best remake ever done. i played it on the ps5 and damn, stunning visuals + locked 60 fps feels so good. the puzzles and the game design (and of course the plot) are jaw dropping, and theres a feeling inside you that makes you want to explore the whole thing, all the places to find more supplies and learn more about the lore behind it all. but theres also a sense of loneliness and fear there, which, seriously, its amazing. a must play for anyone who can put theirs hands on it. It feels like this game was made for me, its not going to be everyone's cup of tea but this is a great introduction to survival horror if you have yet to jump in.

The Good: Gameplay is king here. It feels perfect, you are never quite on top of the situation and the game rewards you for both preparing well and improvising when things don't go to plan. Story is simple and thank god

    The Good:
Gameplay is king here. It feels perfect, you are never quite on top of the situation and the game rewards you for both preparing well and improvising when things don't go to plan.

Story is simple and thank god for that, no great morels beside helping people and zombies/umbrella = bad. This is Resident Evil, story comes second or not at all.

Characters like the story are simple but receive just enough developmental to feel more then one dimensional Resident Evil characters. Its also fun seeing baby face Leon and Clair who are just great as the protagonists.

No Ludonarrative Dissonance here, I find it very distracting when the story and game play tones thematically don't match. RE2 pulls this off with the threat feeling real in both cut scenes and in game. Its a small thing but your character model becomes more damaged as the game goes on, really helps to connect the cut scenes and game play.

    Mr X is awesome

Very repayable, first time you a just making it through by the skim of your teeth, 2nd you are much more confident and can get through with a lot more ease and 3rd, 4th and 5th times you are going for speed runs for unlocks but you never disrespect the common zombie because they are always a threat.

The different scenarios are fun and have enough different item locations to feel fresh

    The Bad:
I do find it odd that Leon and Clair's scenarios don't cross over at all, this was a feature of the original but is completely absent here. A missed opportunity.

One exception to the Ludonarrative Dissonance rule is that the main characters can take a few bites in game but in cut scenes one bite a death sentence, oops.

    Conclusion:
Resident Evil fans have had to put up with some BS in the past but with RE2 remake and the great RE7 a few years back RE is back and Capcom is on a winning streak. I personally cannot wait for RE8, might just be the only reason I buy a PS5......

10/10 Fantastic game, new standard for Resident Evil, game remakes and maybe survival horror as a whole

I would be hard-pressed to find a more enjoyable survival horror game in recent memory than the Resident Evil 2 Remake. I personally don't have any sort of nostalgic attachment for the original game, but I do have a tremendous amount of respect for it. Considering how great RE7 turned out, I was more than eager to want to give this game a shot, and man oh man this game just blew it out of the water. At this point in time, RE2R is now my favorite game in the series.

The story follows much of the same beats as the original RE2, but with a retooled script and additions thrown in to help add to the experience, all the while retaining the personalities and quirks of the characters. Leon is still a loveable dork, Claire is still caring and badass, and Ada is still a mysterious fem fatal. All these characters are voiced incredibly well and are some of the best performances in the series so far. While the situations themselves are still incredibly serious, there's still a level of classic RE camp to help alleviate some of the more dramatic moments, while not feeling to out of place. There are even some genuine emotional moments that personally got to me like with Kendo the gun shop owner. However, I do feel that they could have done a bit more to flesh out Leon and Claire's friendship as they very rarely have any interactions with each other, and very quickly they start to act buddy-buddy with one another. If you are a fan of the original than you may be disappointed to know that the scenario system from the original doesn't work the way it used to. You can still choose Claire A/Leon B and vice versa, but the changes to the layout and item placement from the original is no longer present.

Honestly, though, that's really it as far as the negatives I have with the game, because everything else about it is just so damn good. If you've played Resident Evil Revelations 2, you'll be familiar with how this game controls. Movement feels just right, the gunplay is tricky, but satisfying to pull off. Ammo is limited early on and the zombies do not go down easy, making them a real threat in this game. The game carries over the traditional item management of the classics, having you choose between important key items, additional ammo or healing items. Knowing the layout of your surroundings is important for you to fully manage your inventory and knowing which paths to take and which zombies to kill or run past. It's survival horror gameplay at its finest. That's not even getting into the horror that is Mr. X. This lumbering brick wall will stalk you everywhere you go. Unless you are in a safe room or are extremely quiet, he will find you and lay the smackdown. It's one of the most intense gameplay elements I have experienced in some time. All of this is backed up by pitch perfect sound design. Everything from the moans of the zombies, to the pounding footsteps of Mr. X, and the well-placed musical cues. The soundtrack for this game overall is great, but a really cool thing that you can do is add the original RE2 98 soundtrack to this game and it fits just as perfectly (though its a shame it's locked behind a paywall).

If you are even remotely interested in horror games, you need to play this game point blank period. It's not simply one of the best games series has to offer, it's one of the best in its class.

I honestly enjoyed this game very much. It felt great, it felt nice. I loved playing as Claire and I loved playing as Leon. Although I really did not like the A and B scenarios. Capcom could have done them better instead of making them basically a copy and paste of each other. Mr X annoyed me a lot but that was his intention. Overall I loved Leon and Claire.

The atmosphere of horror is overwhelming and proves that in 2019 there is a place for a Resident-like story in which the modern visuals heighten and not lessen the fear. It’s the best Resident Evil ever. [03/2019, p.40]

Resident Evil 2 is a wonderful recreation of a believed original that, not only recaptures the glory of that game, but also improves upon it from a visual and gameplay standpoint. All in all, don’t miss out on this one.
