However if you stick with it and learn the mechanics, its actually a lot of fun. Once you find the right gear to match your play style it becomes much easier. The diversity in builds is nice, too.

    So my scores:

Gameplay: 9 - after you learn it
    Replayability: 9

    Sound: 7

Overall it is a solid game that takes a bit of work to start out.

The procedural generation completely wrecks my enjoyment, and the lack of hand-crafted, memorable, and well-paced levels really shows. There are only a handful of tiles that are used, and it makes the level repetitive and uninspiring.

In all honesty, I'm surprised that so many people compare this to soulsborne and soulslikes. A large portion of those games is about having intricately-designed levels to make exploration exciting. The game may be "hard", but it doesn't make it enjoyable.

I wanted to love this game so much. I've always wanted a souls-like with gameplay like RE4 or Dead Space and Remnant largely succeeds in doing that but it's hampered so much by its rogue elements and focus on multiplayer. It ultimately fails at being both a souls-like and a loot-shooter.

    PRO
+ Gunplay is fantastic. RE4 + Dark Souls i-frame dodging is a win
+ Limited ammo, bonfires, and estus give it a great survival horror feel

    CON
    - Level design is absolutely terrible. Rogue map generation adds nothing and is a huge detractor, with blocky homogeneous maps that liberally reuse pieces. This is theoretically good for replay value but why would I replay a game that was this dull and repetitive the first time?
    - There's only 4 areas, all of which follow the same pattern and overstay their welcome. Having more areas that are smaller, making them more elaborate, having them connect, etc could have done wonders for the world design.
    - Standard combat encounters very rarely offer unique or interesting scenarios. You always have quicker melee enemies charging you while slow brutes shoot you from a distance. That's 80% of the encounters in this game.
    - Basically every single boss in this game is a mob fight that's more about crowd-control than actually fighting the boss. This gets old fast.
    - DO NOT PLAY THIS GAME IN SINGLE PLAYER. I played the first half in single player until I just couldn't take it anymore. The aforementioned mob bosses can feel so irritating and unfair, and you move through the game at a snail's pace if solo.
    - Multiplayer kills what little Souls appeal the game has. The game is balanaced for multiple people but it's still sooooo much easier in coop. The tension of surviving to the next bonfire is mostly absent and it starts to feel more like a poor man's Destiny or Borderlands. The bosses are still brutal but far more manageable.

Many have called this a souls-like but it fails pretty hard at this. The sense of immersion, exploration, and character progression are all bad here. Souls fans apply elsewhere. So it's a pretty mediocre souls-like if you play alone and a forgettable loot-shooter in coop. You're damned if you do and damned if you don't. The excellent gunplay can't make up for the fact that everything around it is mediocre.

First, the matchmaking is broken. You'll go hours at a time without having anyone placed into your game, even in the evenings when there should be plenty of people playing. When people do join together, it won't be long before someone/everyone is inexplicably disconnected from the match. If you're not dealing with people being randomly disconnected, then you'll be struggling with massive stutter and framerate issues that completely ruin the game. Since it relies so heavily on precise dodging, having the game constantly stutter when you attempt to dodge is absolutely unacceptable and results in unavoidable deaths. I'm not going to bother mentioning the rest of the myriad bugs, like frequent crashes, because they're not as game-breaking as the above.

Beyond the broken state of the game, the game's boss mechanics are terrible. The bosses themselves aren't that difficult to take down, and instead of making well-designed bosses with challenging mechanics, the developers cheaply inflated the difficulty by adding INFINITELY spawning mobs in every boss fight. Other than replenishing your ammo, there's no point in killing the ads because they'll respawn faster than you can take them all out.

So the strategy for solo players and matchmade teams boils down to getting in potshots at the boss in between dodging the spammed attacks of the ads. But since the ads all swarm you, attack at different times so there is no "safety" interval where you're not being attacked, and literally spawn behind you without any warning whatsoever, getting hit is inevitable. I say again, it is inevitable, no matter how skilled you are. That's not challenging, that's cheap, and it makes player skill irrelevant.

I did complete the campaign in Remnant, but I had to force myself to do so. I've put hundreds of hours into the Souls games, beat DS3 at soul level 1, loved Sekiro, Nioh, God of War, etc., so I have no lack of skill at these type of action games. The boss fights in this game aren't truly challenging, they're just cheap, aggravating, and worst of all, they're not satisfying to beat. The one weapon mod that was a godsend in the boss fights, because it took all aggro from the enemies for about 15 seconds so that you could finally focus on the boss, was just nerfed to make it much less effective. The one thing that made the terrible swarm mechanics more bearable was taken away? Are you ****ing kidding me?

I imagine that the game could be fun with a group of friends that actually strategized for the boss fights and coordinated their weapon mods and gear accordingly, but you're obviously never going to get that in public matchmaking. As it stands, I strongly recommend that solo players and those looking to rely on matchmade co-op avoid this game.

What happens when you try to mimic an souls game without the single idea of what does a souls game good. Well this game is the answer.

    Lore resume:
The lore of remnant is somewhat an interesting one. A multiverse stuck with a parasitic like hive-mind that want to consume everything. Your quest is fairly simple find the man who fought them and almost got them then continue the work. You will go through 5 interesting world that take multiple facet (some rng base tile set and boss too).

    Combat:
When the i frame and the rest of the kit work it fell great BUT it's for 5% and less of the time. There Are also MAJOR input issue you will press the roll button BUT the time it require to do the action is never the same. IT WILL get you kill many MANY time.
The gun fell meh i choose the pre-set and barely had to use something else even worse the rest of the kit were A plain useless B barely workable.
The weapon mod were for the most part useless or barely useful. i use the starting one for the scrapper (it give fire and 20% more damage) and the healing circle the most. Every other mod were tried out but almost put back in the dust bin.
Melee was useful for ONE boss brabus or something like that. Beside that any way to use it is equal to suicide. Melee is worthless even when you try to get ammo, for it you have to survive.... yeah buy ammo pack instead you will save many headache.

    Character:
The customization (first creation), the armor, gun model, mod look on the guns, melee weapon ALL of them look so fking cool.
LVLing up in this game is not really a thing you will get trait point that act more like passive buff than lvl. You get a point and you shove them in a trait I.E handling at trait 1 you have 1% Less recoil and spread at max (20 point) you have 20% less recoil and spread. Some of them are earn through doing specific thing I.E head-shot other through killing a boss.
You acquire weapon and mod from the boss

    The enemies:
You will fight walking wood monster. futuristic robot. Insect like being, human, goat like creature.
They are alright but you will quickly see that there are 4 type of enemies in there. Shooter, rusher, exploder, Special (taking one of the previous trait). an that is for all faction. Shooter might simply take a magic user or a gun wielding maniac and that's the same for all of them (enemies type) some dig some fly ect there's is not much variant they just mash them together.

    THE BOSS:
those thing are frustrating like hell There's one ONE of them that does not throw mob at you while fighting (Ixili'S) but you got to fight 2 of them. Seriously who tough it was a good idea, they all suck the ONLY reason you will die is that there's one fk that spawn right behind you. You won't die much against the boss those mob will get you. It is a shyt design and an lazy one. I would not said IF there was one or 2 like that but they are ALL like that. The ONLY one that use a mechanic related to that is the last one (nightmare) he send you in a dark zone, mob will appear and killing them will grant you more damage to it which is great at least it is different but that you got to discover it.

    CO-OP:
if solo is shyt co-op is worse. enemies get everything at 2x (health, damage, number) so the boss. yeah sure you have another buddy with you but is it really worth the insane increase of difficulty. also it get 1x for every player so a full team 3x of everything. They can't even copy a simple mechanic from the soul like the summoning. Make them do more damage and take a bit more hit but really come on.

    The multiple route:
That barely have a affect on the game story in fact that have 0 affect on the story that you kill babrus, help the undying king or the insect queen have 0 affect. It might change the future boss spawn but with the procedure element i can't be sure.

    The procedure element:
It does jack beside some difference or different dungeon it barely have a big effect on the play-through. The room switch around hooooo i play warframe i know how the shyt work you need more to impress me.

    Final tough:
If you are here cool thank you, Now this game for 52$can yeah its a pass i would not bother. The game have WAY too many issue to be fun to play. i would wait for it to drop or simply pop back that sweet bloodborn, darksoul in the ps4 and play that instead ah even deamon soul would be a better take that this thing.

This is beyond a doubt, the worst game I have ever played. I could not get past the first challenge (find the subway entrance) before I gave up. Dying over and over again with no apparent chance of advancing further is just plain stupid and frustrating. I quit! Repetitive gameplay through really lacking environments that would have benefited from an actual design instead of this procedural generation crap... Difficulty is all over the place. The general game is incredibly easy, then when you hit a boss fight it either is a pushover or nearly impossible. Calling this a loot shooter is also a stretch, there is barely any loot to be had. For anyone looking for drops and changing your gear, you will be disappointed to know there is only 10 total armor sets... And guns are also very limited. There's some variety with the boss guns but they end up making it so you cannot use any of the other perks you get in the game. There is some fun to be had through the co-op... But it's hardly worth the time. Without spoiling, near the end of the game you have to solve a random puzzle that gives very little direction as to what you need to do. It also gives no indication that if you mess up once, you need to kill yourselves and try again or you never will complete it. There is no way to know this by just playing the game, and you don't even know you are entering a puzzle room and can easily mess it up right away. We ended up killing our progress by being stuck here for an hour, and you should not have to look the answer up online which is what ended up happening. After this puzzle, you face the final boss. It is a very odd pacing choice that totally killed the game for us right at the end... Overall we had some laughs despite the horrible glitches we encountered. Had the game not been free on ps plus this month, it would not be worth it. Don't spend a dime on this crap, but if you want a new co-op game, pick it up for free this month and give it a try maybe you'll like it. But to me, not worth the praise at all. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great concept but very flawed execution. Matchmaking does not work very well as the game would have benefited greatly from some sort of summoning system. In the multiple hours I put in, no one joined my game despite matchmaking being open. Absolutely horrendous difficulty spikes in terms of bosses. It seems as if almost no balancing was done. Extremely frustrating, as gameplay goes from enjoyable to downright unplayable. I’m not sure if patches can fix above issues but would go a long way to making this an awesome game. For now, I’m moving on to another game. Expand

the game is in my opinion a love letter from developer Gunfire Games to from software the game doesn't copy the blood souls franchise like other souls like games but adds more to it like the guns being the main weapons or the re roll mechanic which i will explain later at the pros

story: you are a human searching for the tower because it contains the secrets to defeating the root which are the main baddies of the game but you soon find out that there are other worlds that you can travel to and so begins your adventure

    cons:

the game suffers from a lot of technical issues like frame rates rendering issues game crashes bugs and sometimes the online doesn't work at all i personally had like 6 hard crashes and had to re roll my campaign just to continue playing

there is no penalty for dying what so ever and i consider it kind of bad because the game becomes more casual and easy the only penalty you suffer is your mods (skills) charge resetting but they do charge fast so its kind of a useless penalty

the loading screen is a bit long and the developers need to shorten its time

playing on harder difficulties doesn't give you anything special except for bragging rights so its kind of not worth it changing your difficulty in the game

there aren't that much sets and armors in the game although you can finish the game with your base armor set that you get from the beginning of the game and most of the armors aren't that useful its always nice to have a lot of gear on you and thinking how much you progressed through this game

the game is a little bit short campaign wise yes again i know the developer team isn't that big but again they could extend it by a little bit

leveling is a bit broken in this game in my opinion and in a short while you can become really op which again makes the game casual also you can get tomes of knowledge which are skill points so at some point you can just become super op

    pros:

the developers are releasing patches left and right and always answer the fans in the social forms they always fix problems and always try to make the game better which is awesome because it shows how much they care about their game

almost all the bosses are really unique and a couple of them can destroy the area around you every boss acts differently which means you have to approach it differently and change your mods (skills) and weapons so you can defeat them also there are two ways to kill most of the bosses and you get different rewards if you kill them one of both ways

the replay value in this game is crazy because of a cool mechanic they added called re rolling
re rolling your campaign will change the maps and the bosses you face which also changes the rewards you get that means you can replay the game more than once and get different stuff also as i mentioned almost every boss has two ways you can kill him which also adds to the replay value

i finished the main campaign after 20 hours which is a lot considering i searched everywhere and everything there was on the maps

there are a lot of secrets and puzzles you can discover and get awesome rewards from and they are challenging which is a super good thing

the map design is superb and every new area looks and feels like your there

they added voice over to your character and he has that Nathan drake lines where he yells goddammit if you almost die or get hit or if someone spots you your character yells oh what now ? its a very cool edition to the game but they need to add more lines because sometimes your character will repeat him self and it will become annoying over time

they also added secret quests like in dark souls which is again a cool edition and give you more room to explore and find or return items to the npc quest givers

mods are the skills you can use in this game you can get mods from killing bosses and crafting mods from the materials you get every mod is super awesome but you can only use two by applying the mod to your weapons it also changed the weapons look props to the devs for adding that extra detail

traits are your passive skills that you can unlock by doing all sorts of challenges although the game doesn't tell you what to do and how to get those traits so its super fun to discover it by yourself

all in all this game is super fun and awesome and a cool edition to the souls like games and in my opinion one of the best ones in that category but the developers have to patch the game a lot because there are a lot of technical issues in the game right now so my final score to the game is a 7 out of 10 and after they patch it up a easy 8 out of 10

2020 update: so after swamps of courses released and after a lot of patches gunfire did it the game became just so much better including the new dlc content so my 2020 score after all they did with the game is a 8.5 out of 10

They follow the same formula, big bad with huge dmg and health pool, then add a million littles mobs to piss you off and ruin your timing. It's fine in a co-op campaign, but solo, the game is a bust. It also crashes on PS4 A LOT. Like, at least once per 2-3 hour session for me. This is the only game on my PS4 that has ever crashed for me, let alone to have crashed this often.

I still managed to beat the whole thing solo, but did I have fun? During the exploration, yes, it was fun. During the boss fights, they were annoying as **** Another complaint, why is it that every item, armor piece, weapon, and crafting resource you find it split magically between all members of a co-op session, but ammunition ****ing isn't? It's the most important resource and you end up having to fight your own team mates to even pick-up bullets so you can keep fighting! THAT is a terrible design.

People also seem to think adds are needed so you can get ammo during a boss fight. Why? Ammo could spawn from literally anywhere. You could just get a magical reload as part of making it to the bosses next phase if you wanted. Adds even TAKE UP more bullets to kill, so they usually end up paying you for the bullets you use to kill them.

If they could make the boss encounters less annoying and fix the crashes, it'd be worth 8-9 stars at least. There's definitely potential, and I want Gunfire to succeed, but the fact is, the current formula copies only the worst bosses of Dark Souls and the game is looking to be a replacement. You can see it clearly from the aesthetic, the mechanics, and many of the items, but DS had really challenging and FUN boss designs. Royal Rat Authority sucked, and every boss in Remnant is a variation of that encounter.

Tons of people may hate this review, but whatever, that's life. Not everyone will be a fanboy who forgives poor designs because Gunfire is an indie dev. And Gunfire needs to be aware that some of their audience is dissatisfied and for what reason. I'll keep my eye on this game and I'll prolly buy their DLC, after other people have played it to see if they make the next bosses better and fix the crashing issues. If not, I'll avoid the game.

In its current state, I'd say the game is worth 20$, but Gunfire saw a lot of success, so maybe the DLC and whatever game they make next will benefit from the increased resources. I really hope so. They were so close to making a GREAT game. I just feel like this one falls a bit short.

First game in long time that I enjoyed with my friends. Solo is great too. Don't miss it, it's hidden gem, especially if Souls genre warms your heart. Expand

Awful broken game, nothing compared to the quality of a From Software game. Don't bother playing this terrible title. Its completely unbalanced and unfair and even when you get past difficult parts, there is no sense of satisfaction.

Sadly, however, after putting 15+ hours into this games. I can say with certainty that this game learns only the skin of Souls games, not its core gameplay. Your gear doesn't mater, because enemy scale with you. You death doesn't mater, too, because there is no death penalty. Enemy placement doesn't mater because 90% of the game is long corridors with mobs rushing at you. And the other 10% is Boss with mobs rushing at you. The core play of this game is just old arena shooter with souls skin on the outside. Sadly I purchased the PS4 digital version, otherwise I would really like a refund.

Lazy boss design, built around the idea that every single boss (I sh*t you not) must throw an infinite amount of bullet sponge enemies at you. While the game is indeed really fun in co-op, the game is absolute single-player garbage. While the game is indeed really fun in co-op, the game is absolute single-player garbage. Imagine my shock when I realized that the game which was advertised as a looter shooter has barely any loot, except for crafting materials and consumables. One of the other user reviews suggests that there are some minor bugs, and I am willing to agree with that, if we consider constant game crashes on PS4 as a minor bug. People tend to give this game way higher ratings than it should have, mostly because most of the new games are not really good, I guess. Overall, Remnant: From The Ashes is a journey from point A to point B, while collecting crafting materials and consumables, and in some extremely rare cases - weapons and armor (in case they happen to be in your world), in order to fight a boss which will summon infinite amount of enemies. Remnant is not hard, it is tedious. The voice acting is not really bad, but it's not very good either, but oh well, that's what you get for 40$ I guess? And while all the NPCs look generic, sound generic, and they feel like we've met them already in another game, how are we, the players, supposed to feel engaged? This game feels like Atlas at times, you feel like it should've been in Darksiders, but they thought they can make some money out of it. And they did. If you're on PS4, avoid this game at all costs. Considering the fundamental flaws the game has (which should've been pointed out by the reviewers, but they weren't because it's a 40$ game, and again that doesn't make it any better) I would suggest waiting for a sale, so you and your buddies can actually enjoy the co-op (where the game shines) at a reasonable price. It's tough but aren't these games supposed to be? Bad reviews probably are just frustrated at its difficulty but really is nothing more difficult then any souls game. GET GUD... Expand

The thing is, this game has procedurally generated campaigns. In my first two attempts in the first areas I had barely any resources to upgrade my weapons to get me by. I got to the first boss and died in 10 seconds. I thought I could then farm for resources but I already collected it all. You can buy 7-10 iron at the base every now and then but thats not enough to upgrade your gear to progress further without it being a grind. It felt like I had to play this coop to progress through the game. Sad thing is, the enemies scale with you so...whats the point of upgrading gear? I want to dominate and not feel underpowered through out the entire campaign.

In my current third attempt, by the time I died I had enough resources to +5 all my weapons and buy better armour and level that up substantially. This greatly improved the experience. But theres only so much you can level up because theres different resources that you need thats found in different biomes that you access as you progress and fight bosses. But whats to say that in the next areas I won't have enough resources to upgrade my gear to have a fair boss fight? I can't roll a better level. I can only roll another entire campaign and start from the beginning. So you might end up rolling a low resource campaign and have a tough and unfair time.

The levels themselves are interesting. There are buildings and underground tunnels, streets with different pathways. In my third attempt, my areas had multiple paths that led to side dungeons and 3 story buildings full of resources. Before that, I didn't have a side dungeon to gather extra resources or 3 story buildings. The difference between my first two attempts and my third is night and day. Before the levels were small to medium size but in my third attempt the areas are huge and open.

What will you roll? This is important because if you're going into this game solo on hard difficulty, you want the third attempt type campaign like I have. Otherwise you're going to have to rely on coop to get you by which sucks.

It'd be great if you could load into side dungeons from the crystal to level up your character, gather resources to upgrade gear and then go back into the campaign and progress further. I mean, this game does have procedurally generated levels and 400 enemies or something. I'm sure other players have rolled a campaign where they felt underpowered because they didn't get enough resources to manage all the enemies.

At times this game can feel really unfair. On solo, prepare to play offensive and take out enemies from a distance. There are these little ball creatures that stab you. The hit box is absolute **** You'll be taking on these ball creatures, then an elite boss with swords will spawn and start going for you while you're being rushed by these ball creatures. Not to mention that some elite bosses spawn more n00b enemies that drain your ammo. They do drop ammo but how can you push forward to get it when you're getting rushed?

Theres no weapon wheel in this game. I'll be using my rifle to take out enemies long range but then an elite boss will spawn and start rushing me. I won't have time to go into my menu, unequip the mod from my current weapon, pick the shotgun, equip the mod, then go back into the game and fight the elite enemy.

I think when it comes to solo, it really comes down to luck on what you roll. The last thing you want to happen is get to the third or fourth boss and realise you don't have enough resources to level up and now you have to run around and start farming hoping that the enemies will drop the right iron that you need. This might not sound like a big deal but each weapon benefits a type of enemy or boss. You want the shotgun for close range and the rifle for long rage. But you'll have to use resources to level them both up. Armour has special resistance to certain environmental effects. Well, prepare to upgrade those to get you by but again, no more iron because you found it all and upgraded the **** out of your guns to fight back against the ball creatures with the knives.

I don't know if I would recommend this game. It is fun but I don't know how long it will last. Right now I'm up against a ball creature boss and rolls at me like Sonic. Meanwhile n00b ball creatures are also spawning around me and its a good thing I had enough resources to upgrade my shotgun.

    Will you?

After 4 hours, I think I had enough. I bought this game based on raving reviews like "art and vision are incredible" and "multiplayer is fun as hell" and what i got was a decent attempt at best.
Some of the most glaring problems:
    - Public coop, aka Jolliy Cooperation simply does not work. Its simply a "join a lobby" and require a restart of the level to work. - Instead of level they

Some of the most glaring problems:
    - Public coop, aka Jolliy Cooperation simply does not work. Its simply a "join a lobby" and require a restart of the level to work.
    - Instead of level they have this bizzare dynamic levelling with weighted average whatever that basically means "update everything or suffer"
    - The same key is used for Melee AND shooting. That means to shoot you have to press L2 and then R2. If you press R2 (hip fire) it does a melee attack. This alone gets you killed billion of times.
    - oh and you cannot remap controller keys. In 2019.
    - "difficult" consist in the old gangink - they throw 3 enemies at you spawning from the floor (something under you) and thats it.
    - Boss fights - the one I did consisted in running around looking for a teleporting enemy.
    - Oh and this gem - the "cough cough" mechanics. You are infected and that means that - randomly - instead of a melee or shooting your toon starts coughing around and proceeds to be massacred.
Still I give it a 7 solely because the developer seems genuinely interested in fixing this flaws. If this will happen I will give the game another shot and update this review.

Maybe on PC the controls work great. PS4 controls lack responds time, sensitivity and deadzone fix. This makes it harder and after a few attempt frustrating to fight a Boss. Matchmaking needs major work. Loading screens could be slighty faster. Hope DEVs are listing and with some minor fixes this game can become a massive hit. It’s just not there yet. It can be an 8 or 9 just not yet.

Got this game from PS+, never heard of it so not knowing what to expect.

And I experienced a pleasant surprise :). Game reminds me of Demon's Souls in diffulty and setup (ie Nexus level type hub), but than with guns. the good: -Graphics are not mind blowing but get the job done. -Shooting mechanics are fantastic! -A nice touch is the semi randomness where the levels are

    the good:
-Graphics are not mind blowing but get the job done.
    -Shooting mechanics are fantastic!
-A nice touch is the semi randomness where the levels are constructed differently on a different playthrough and with (possibly) different bosses, adds a bit of variety which keeps things fresh.
Game can be really hard at times, but I don't mind a challenge

    the bad:
    - Bosses generally can spawn minions, which can tip the scale for some bosses from hard to unfair
    - The last boss, really didn't like the concept of that fight

Overall, if you don't mind a challenging game, I can highly recommend!

As a fan of these kinds of games, I can say that Remnant: From the Ashes is a type of soulslike that I would have probably passed over in favor of something more traditional, but after giving it a fair shot I’m glad to say that it’s the successful spin on the genre that I didn’t know I wanted.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a brilliant game that will undoubtedly satisfy the masochistic urges of all those Souls-Like (really can't apologise enough) fanatics out there that need their next fix of brutal punishment in the form of a video game. The game is let down by a few minor faults and won't provide the same amount of gameplay that the majority of Souls games deliver to players, but the positives of this game far outweigh its negatives and the ability to replay it and take it on with friends negate the admittedly short standard campaign time.

Remnant: From the Ashes is an entertaining and challenging game, that also give us some options to try its gameplay and challenge its enemies. However, you should not forget that it's mainly a coop game, and playing alone can be tough or even frustrating for the most part of the journey.
