The thing is, this game has procedurally generated campaigns. In my first two attempts in the first areas I had barely any resources to upgrade my weapons to get me by. I got to the first boss and died in 10 seconds. I thought I could then farm for resources but I already collected it all. You can buy 7-10 iron at the base every now and then but thats not enough to upgrade your gear to progress further without it being a grind. It felt like I had to play this coop to progress through the game. Sad thing is, the enemies scale with you so...whats the point of upgrading gear? I want to dominate and not feel underpowered through out the entire campaign.

In my current third attempt, by the time I died I had enough resources to +5 all my weapons and buy better armour and level that up substantially. This greatly improved the experience. But theres only so much you can level up because theres different resources that you need thats found in different biomes that you access as you progress and fight bosses. But whats to say that in the next areas I won't have enough resources to upgrade my gear to have a fair boss fight? I can't roll a better level. I can only roll another entire campaign and start from the beginning. So you might end up rolling a low resource campaign and have a tough and unfair time.

The levels themselves are interesting. There are buildings and underground tunnels, streets with different pathways. In my third attempt, my areas had multiple paths that led to side dungeons and 3 story buildings full of resources. Before that, I didn't have a side dungeon to gather extra resources or 3 story buildings. The difference between my first two attempts and my third is night and day. Before the levels were small to medium size but in my third attempt the areas are huge and open.

What will you roll? This is important because if you're going into this game solo on hard difficulty, you want the third attempt type campaign like I have. Otherwise you're going to have to rely on coop to get you by which sucks.

It'd be great if you could load into side dungeons from the crystal to level up your character, gather resources to upgrade gear and then go back into the campaign and progress further. I mean, this game does have procedurally generated levels and 400 enemies or something. I'm sure other players have rolled a campaign where they felt underpowered because they didn't get enough resources to manage all the enemies.

At times this game can feel really unfair. On solo, prepare to play offensive and take out enemies from a distance. There are these little ball creatures that stab you. The hit box is absolute **** You'll be taking on these ball creatures, then an elite boss with swords will spawn and start going for you while you're being rushed by these ball creatures. Not to mention that some elite bosses spawn more n00b enemies that drain your ammo. They do drop ammo but how can you push forward to get it when you're getting rushed?

Theres no weapon wheel in this game. I'll be using my rifle to take out enemies long range but then an elite boss will spawn and start rushing me. I won't have time to go into my menu, unequip the mod from my current weapon, pick the shotgun, equip the mod, then go back into the game and fight the elite enemy.

I think when it comes to solo, it really comes down to luck on what you roll. The last thing you want to happen is get to the third or fourth boss and realise you don't have enough resources to level up and now you have to run around and start farming hoping that the enemies will drop the right iron that you need. This might not sound like a big deal but each weapon benefits a type of enemy or boss. You want the shotgun for close range and the rifle for long rage. But you'll have to use resources to level them both up. Armour has special resistance to certain environmental effects. Well, prepare to upgrade those to get you by but again, no more iron because you found it all and upgraded the **** out of your guns to fight back against the ball creatures with the knives.

I don't know if I would recommend this game. It is fun but I don't know how long it will last. Right now I'm up against a ball creature boss and rolls at me like Sonic. Meanwhile n00b ball creatures are also spawning around me and its a good thing I had enough resources to upgrade my shotgun.

    Will you?

yeah if you're a solo player like me and have no friends to play co-op with, pretty sure you should avoid this game or at least wait for this game to be half price. Solid gun mechanics and feel, but that's pretty much it. A lot of shooting, not much else. The worst part is the enemies spawn especially during boss battles, and it's continuous. Basically any objective you do, prepared to be swarmed by non-challenging but annoying enemies that makes this game artificially difficult. Bullet sponge bosses are enough, why with the annoying side enemies? Looting is just monotonous, like others said don't go into this game as a looter shooter. Oh and if you play co-op with randoms, you literally have to progress in your own world if you want to progress further into the game, or it's going to keep dropping you into the same mission as in your world. For solo gamer's best to avoid. Expand

Great game. It reminds me of dark souls but the gun play is absolutely solid and mods added make the guns more fun to use!

great game, challenging bit not darksouls raging hard. no microtransaction ****
As solo player its a bit on the "a bit unfair hard" side, but for coop (matchmaking really easy) its a blast.
since some time one of the best Games with no BS strings attached. and for the Price top notch

I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game so far (10+ hours) and I expect to spend much more time going forward. As promised by Gunfire, I hope to see the devs continue to add content and make adjustments as time goes on to make this an even better game. I for one would gladly pay $10-20 for additional environments, mods and equipment.

Disappointment. This game pretends to be Souls, but it's in skin only, it's core is the old and tired arena shooter.

Sadly, however, after putting 15+ hours into this games. I can say with certainty that this game learns only the skin of Souls games, not its core gameplay. Your gear doesn't mater, because enemy scale with you. You death doesn't mater, too, because there is no death penalty. Enemy placement doesn't mater because 90% of the game is long corridors with mobs rushing at you. And the other 10% is Boss with mobs rushing at you. The core play of this game is just old arena shooter with souls skin on the outside. Sadly I purchased the PS4 digital version, otherwise I would really like a refund.

After 4 hours, I think I had enough. I bought this game based on raving reviews like "art and vision are incredible" and "multiplayer is fun as hell" and what i got was a decent attempt at best.

Some of the most glaring problems:
    - Public coop, aka Jolliy Cooperation simply does not work. Its simply a "join a lobby" and require a restart of the level to work.
    - Instead of level they have this bizzare dynamic levelling with weighted average whatever that basically means "update everything or suffer"
    - The same key is used for Melee AND shooting. That means to shoot you have to press L2 and then R2. If you press R2 (hip fire) it does a melee attack. This alone gets you killed billion of times.
    - oh and you cannot remap controller keys. In 2019.
    - "difficult" consist in the old gangink - they throw 3 enemies at you spawning from the floor (something under you) and thats it.
    - Boss fights - the one I did consisted in running around looking for a teleporting enemy.
    - Oh and this gem - the "cough cough" mechanics. You are infected and that means that - randomly - instead of a melee or shooting your toon starts coughing around and proceeds to be massacred.
Still I give it a 7 solely because the developer seems genuinely interested in fixing this flaws. If this will happen I will give the game another shot and update this review.

The story and lore in the game is well written with decent voice acting and a lot buried in files and diaries. Like From Software, you can choose to engage in the story and go deep or you can just float over the surface and get the general gist. The art sets a bleak tone which suits its post apocalyptic setting and the character models are decent with some character customization. Since it is third person over-the shoulder, the character customization is not all that meaningful.

The strongest part of Remnant is the game play in coop. It has the best of Gears (of War) and Dark Souls with tough situations. Some of the boss fights, in my opinion, need tuning, particularly for solo play. Playing solo requires one to be mostly perfect on normal, near perfect on hard and unerringly perfect on nightmare (on first play through) and the bar lowers significantly when playing in coop. It is obvious that the game is better tuned for two and three player groups than it is for solo play.

The random generation encourages additional playthroughs, especially since playing through once you will not have all the story elements or see all of the enemies, layouts, loot and bosses. Each players world is unique due to the variability of the game through a large amount of content and the use of random generation. It also encourages group play so one can see different zones and bosses and different layouts. The game also encourages and rewards exploration with hidden, meaningful secrets and loot.

For a $40 game with additional free content to be added in the future it is one of the best priced games available and well worth the price. Hopefully the gunplay used in Remnant will find its way into the upcoming Darksiders 4 with Strife's focus on guns - in my opinion it would be a perfect fit.

As a fan of these kinds of games, I can say that Remnant: From the Ashes is a type of soulslike that I would have probably passed over in favor of something more traditional, but after giving it a fair shot I’m glad to say that it’s the successful spin on the genre that I didn’t know I wanted.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a brilliant game that will undoubtedly satisfy the masochistic urges of all those Souls-Like (really can't apologise enough) fanatics out there that need their next fix of brutal punishment in the form of a video game. The game is let down by a few minor faults and won't provide the same amount of gameplay that the majority of Souls games deliver to players, but the positives of this game far outweigh its negatives and the ability to replay it and take it on with friends negate the admittedly short standard campaign time.

Remnant: From the Ashes is an entertaining and challenging game, that also give us some options to try its gameplay and challenge its enemies. However, you should not forget that it's mainly a coop game, and playing alone can be tough or even frustrating for the most part of the journey.
