It can really lead you into a wall frustration if you don't understand it and wildly level up your equipment. The game does not explain this to you. And for that this game loses marks.

However if you stick with it and learn the mechanics, its actually a lot of fun. Once you find the right gear to match your play style it becomes much easier. The diversity in builds is nice, too.

    So my scores:

    Graphics: 8
Gameplay: 9 - after you learn it
    Replayability: 9

    Sound: 7

Overall it is a solid game that takes a bit of work to start out.

As solo player its a bit on the "a bit unfair hard" side, but for coop (matchmaking really easy) its a blast.

Remnant from the ashes is a souls like game but with the edition of guns being your main weapons.
the game is in my opinion a love letter from developer Gunfire Games to from software the game doesn't copy the blood souls franchise like other souls like games but adds more to it like the guns being the main weapons or the re roll mechanic which i will explain later at the pros

the game is in my opinion a love letter from developer Gunfire Games to from software the game doesn't copy the blood souls franchise like other souls like games but adds more to it like the guns being the main weapons or the re roll mechanic which i will explain later at the pros

story: you are a human searching for the tower because it contains the secrets to defeating the root which are the main baddies of the game but you soon find out that there are other worlds that you can travel to and so begins your adventure

    cons:

the game suffers from a lot of technical issues like frame rates rendering issues game crashes bugs and sometimes the online doesn't work at all i personally had like 6 hard crashes and had to re roll my campaign just to continue playing

there is no penalty for dying what so ever and i consider it kind of bad because the game becomes more casual and easy the only penalty you suffer is your mods (skills) charge resetting but they do charge fast so its kind of a useless penalty

the loading screen is a bit long and the developers need to shorten its time

playing on harder difficulties doesn't give you anything special except for bragging rights so its kind of not worth it changing your difficulty in the game

there aren't that much sets and armors in the game although you can finish the game with your base armor set that you get from the beginning of the game and most of the armors aren't that useful its always nice to have a lot of gear on you and thinking how much you progressed through this game

the game is a little bit short campaign wise yes again i know the developer team isn't that big but again they could extend it by a little bit

leveling is a bit broken in this game in my opinion and in a short while you can become really op which again makes the game casual also you can get tomes of knowledge which are skill points so at some point you can just become super op

    pros:

the developers are releasing patches left and right and always answer the fans in the social forms they always fix problems and always try to make the game better which is awesome because it shows how much they care about their game

almost all the bosses are really unique and a couple of them can destroy the area around you every boss acts differently which means you have to approach it differently and change your mods (skills) and weapons so you can defeat them also there are two ways to kill most of the bosses and you get different rewards if you kill them one of both ways

the replay value in this game is crazy because of a cool mechanic they added called re rolling
re rolling your campaign will change the maps and the bosses you face which also changes the rewards you get that means you can replay the game more than once and get different stuff also as i mentioned almost every boss has two ways you can kill him which also adds to the replay value

i finished the main campaign after 20 hours which is a lot considering i searched everywhere and everything there was on the maps

there are a lot of secrets and puzzles you can discover and get awesome rewards from and they are challenging which is a super good thing

the map design is superb and every new area looks and feels like your there

they added voice over to your character and he has that Nathan drake lines where he yells goddammit if you almost die or get hit or if someone spots you your character yells oh what now ? its a very cool edition to the game but they need to add more lines because sometimes your character will repeat him self and it will become annoying over time

they also added secret quests like in dark souls which is again a cool edition and give you more room to explore and find or return items to the npc quest givers

mods are the skills you can use in this game you can get mods from killing bosses and crafting mods from the materials you get every mod is super awesome but you can only use two by applying the mod to your weapons it also changed the weapons look props to the devs for adding that extra detail

traits are your passive skills that you can unlock by doing all sorts of challenges although the game doesn't tell you what to do and how to get those traits so its super fun to discover it by yourself

all in all this game is super fun and awesome and a cool edition to the souls like games and in my opinion one of the best ones in that category but the developers have to patch the game a lot because there are a lot of technical issues in the game right now so my final score to the game is a 7 out of 10 and after they patch it up a easy 8 out of 10

2020 update: so after swamps of courses released and after a lot of patches gunfire did it the game became just so much better including the new dlc content so my 2020 score after all they did with the game is a 8.5 out of 10

    the good:
-Graphics are not mind blowing but get the job done.
    -Shooting mechanics are fantastic!
-A nice touch is the semi randomness where the levels are constructed differently on a different playthrough and with (possibly) different bosses, adds a bit of variety which keeps things fresh.
Game can be really hard at times, but I don't mind a challenge

    the bad:
    - Bosses generally can spawn minions, which can tip the scale for some bosses from hard to unfair
    - The last boss, really didn't like the concept of that fight

Overall, if you don't mind a challenging game, I can highly recommend!

The story and lore in the game is well written with decent voice acting and a lot buried in files and diaries. Like From Software, you can choose to engage in the story and go deep or you can just float over the surface and get the general gist. The art sets a bleak tone which suits its post apocalyptic setting and the character models are decent with some character customization. Since it is third person over-the shoulder, the character customization is not all that meaningful.

The strongest part of Remnant is the game play in coop. It has the best of Gears (of War) and Dark Souls with tough situations. Some of the boss fights, in my opinion, need tuning, particularly for solo play. Playing solo requires one to be mostly perfect on normal, near perfect on hard and unerringly perfect on nightmare (on first play through) and the bar lowers significantly when playing in coop. It is obvious that the game is better tuned for two and three player groups than it is for solo play.

The random generation encourages additional playthroughs, especially since playing through once you will not have all the story elements or see all of the enemies, layouts, loot and bosses. Each players world is unique due to the variability of the game through a large amount of content and the use of random generation. It also encourages group play so one can see different zones and bosses and different layouts. The game also encourages and rewards exploration with hidden, meaningful secrets and loot.

For a $40 game with additional free content to be added in the future it is one of the best priced games available and well worth the price. Hopefully the gunplay used in Remnant will find its way into the upcoming Darksiders 4 with Strife's focus on guns - in my opinion it would be a perfect fit.

I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with this game so far (10+ hours) and I expect to spend much more time going forward. As promised by Gunfire, I hope to see the devs continue to add content and make adjustments as time goes on to make this an even better game. Fantastic game and a total steal at only $40. Definitely has AAA value. Runs great on my PS4 Pro, aside from the occasional audio hiccup. I have only played solo, and the difficulty has been very fair and balanced. Bosses are a challenge, but definitely do-able for solo players. I've heard complaints that bosses have too many mobs for a solo player to handle, but this hasn't really been an issue for me after the 6 or 7 boss fights I've finished.
Maps and settings are all interesting and varied -- devs did a fantastic job building fascinating worlds to explore. It's hard to believe that the maps are dynamically generated because they are so streamlined. I'm excited for my next playthrough to see how rerolling the campaign works out.
Only negatives are with the loot system. The game doesn't give you much new gear. Occasionally you'll find a weapon hidden in dungeons, but I havent come across anything better than my starting gear I've kept upgraded. As far as I can tell, there is no way to dismantle or sell unwanted gear either, which is a little unfortunate. However, upgrade materials and currency are generously-available in the world via chests, destructables, and enemy drops.

While Remnant doesn't give you a great first impression, it's appeal grows exponentially as you play.

While the starting weapons are fairly generic you'll later you'll have access to an arsenal of weird and wonderful toys, such as flaming swords and laser rifles. The enemies offer a persistent threat without resorting to becoming bullet sponges, though the melee combat feels very clunky

The enemies offer a persistent threat without resorting to becoming bullet sponges, though the melee combat feels very clunky (so it's a shame that the game starts by only giving you a melee weapon). Large areas of the world are also randomly generated, giving it a great amount of replayability.

The multiplayer is enjoyable and seems to work well with plenty of abilities that promote teamwork. You'll definitely get more out of the game playing with others but it's perfectly playable solo.

The three best qualities of the game are:-
-Gunplay feels great, with good variety of guns and enemies.
-There's a huge amount of replayability, including tons of new zones and bosses to find.
-There's a good amount of variety in the environments, including urban cityscapes, tribal desert villages, enchanted jungles and ancient temples.

The three key things that could be improved are:-
-Bringing some of the later weapons forward to make the first section more interesting.
-Bosses not relying on endlessly spawning mobs.
    -Improved melee combat.

This game is awesome. It takes a LOT form Souls games. Yes, one might say it's a VERY good clone but with guns and post apocalyptic visuals and settings....and they'd be right. The graphics, however......From Software is gonna have to step up their game. This fame is beautiful...and it's a AA title, at best.

Something I like in Remnants is....in Dark Souls (or any other clone)...you die, you lose all souls and have to chase them down. Some games, like Lords of the Fallen, have timers on soul loss and the longer you take, the less you get back (crappy idea, btw). In Remnant...you collect Scrap...not souls, and as far as I can tell, you don't lose it on death. That makes for really easy farming runs. Speaking of farming...you can reset your story mode from the "bonfire" (it's a big crystal) at will....and re-do your story over and over. The game also procedurally generates parts of the play through, so if you reset, you'll see different bosses and different enemies from the last playthrough (within limitations...enemy variety seems slim...but i'm omly 3 hours in).

All in all, I really enjoy this game and with the pre-order bonuses, as well as a $39.99 price tag...I 110% recommend this game to any SoulsBorne fan. Just don't expect the same difficulty as Dark Souls unless you set it to hard...the guns make combat a breeze. However, melee really sucks. It's VERY sluggish...so don't let enemies get up on you.

But without feeling old or “just another shooter/survival game”. You have probably seen “souls-like” plastered all over the reviews. It is. And it isn’t. Yes it is a game that is heavily influenced by the dark souls games. And if you like this games you will probably like this. But if you are like me and just isn’t interested in playing a die hard survival game like the souls games - do know this; it is more accessible and IMHO more fun than the souls games. Is it super hard at times? Will you die often?
Yes! But you keep your progress. No losing souls. The game respects your time and is a bit more chill. Which makes it possible to play the game more aggressively and with less anxiety than a regular souls game. Great game well worth your time and hard earned cash. Some minor bugs, mainly with sound and NPCs not turning toward you when talking.

It took a little while for my friends to warm up to it, while I was thoroughly enjoying it from the first minute. It didnt take long though and both of my mates (who are regular co-op game players) were all having a great time with the game.

The graphics and music are okay... probably a little above average, and the sound effects are better, helping to deliver a proper impact when your bullets etc. connect with an enemy. It is the gameplay where the game truly shines though, it all just flows extremely well and with the exception of being unable to 'shoot-from-the-hip' (the main frustration my friends encountered during our first session) it all controls precisely as you would want a third-person shooter to do so.

It is easily both, the best game I have played so far this year... and the best co-op game I have ever played. My friends also rated it extremely highly in the vast list of co-op games that they have played. An absolute hidden gem of a game and I so hope that Gunfire Games will make a sequel one day.

As a fan of these kinds of games, I can say that Remnant: From the Ashes is a type of soulslike that I would have probably passed over in favor of something more traditional, but after giving it a fair shot I’m glad to say that it’s the successful spin on the genre that I didn’t know I wanted.

Remnant: From the Ashes is a brilliant game that will undoubtedly satisfy the masochistic urges of all those Souls-Like (really can't apologise enough) fanatics out there that need their next fix of brutal punishment in the form of a video game. The game is let down by a few minor faults and won't provide the same amount of gameplay that the majority of Souls games deliver to players, but the positives of this game far outweigh its negatives and the ability to replay it and take it on with friends negate the admittedly short standard campaign time.

Remnant: From the Ashes is an entertaining and challenging game, that also give us some options to try its gameplay and challenge its enemies. However, you should not forget that it's mainly a coop game, and playing alone can be tough or even frustrating for the most part of the journey.
