Nevertheless, if you haven’t played the PS3 or Vita versions, and you’re eager to enjoy some virtual chess, then this is the best option currently available, as it really looks sensational.

Solo players might enjoy this, as long as they don't stray online. [June 2014, p82]

Pure Chess looks gorgeous, and offers an excellent single-player experience. But while playing the AI opponent is fun, the game's woefully underdeveloped online mode makes playing against humans decidedly not.

You can play against the computer, which is fine because it does not do the same moves every time. The difficulty is somewhat of a problem for me, I can beat a 4 and I have beaten a 5 but it is a severe challenge to beat a 5 as the computer does almost everything perfectly. Beating a 6 or above is probably not going to happen. I have not played online as having read the reviews here I don't want to play a game with an idiot that quits the game half way through or does not move for minutes at a time, no thanks! The game is a great looking chess game and I am pleased with it. Expand

You can play the game against a computer opponent or a human opponent in the same room. After one player made a move, the board turns around for the other player, which is very handy. You can also choose to allow 'undo moves' or not and there is the possibility to use a clock (game timer, as it's called).

Playing this game against online opponents is dreathfull! It's very hard to find players online willing to start a game, and once you find an opponent and you made the opening move... nothing seems to be happening. There is no option to use a clock, so you could be waiting for days or longer for your opponent to make a move!

I started 3 games (there are 6 slots in total to save your games) and after making the opening moves against two opponents, they still didn't make a move after more than 30 minutes waiting. The third match didn't even start yet because my oppenent hasn't made his opening move yet.

I also didn't see any option to choose which type of board and pieces to use in an online match. If the makers of Pure Chess had allowed for an option to use a clock in online games, I would have given this game a 9/10. As online games are unplayeble at the moment, I can only give it a generous 7/10.

    Not great

Pure chess isn’t bad in single player - Chess is Chess, there is a limit to how much you can vary it. There are plenty of computer opponents with various skill levels to beat, you can enter tournaments and solve Chess puzzles.

It’s the online play which is the real let down.

Rather than truly live (though once in a blue moon, you will get an opponent who will play the game to conclusion in one sitting). You play in a correspondence Chess (similar to postal chess back in the day, and believe me it’s just as slow!) style, where you might get an opponent making one move every 3 days.

This wouldn’t be so bad, but problem is, you can’t set any time controls, and so if an annoying opponent thinks he / she is loosing the game, he can simply stop playing - I’ve got 2 games going on at the moment where I am Checkmating my opponent on the next move, and they seem to have abandoned the games. There doesn’t seem to be any way to claim the games for stalling, and one of these opponents hasn’t moved in 2 weeks.

You can only have 6 games going on at the same time, so all in all it makes things intolerably slow. I’d give Pure Chess a miss.
