For a paying chess game, I would expect a few more options. By far the worst part of the game is the fact you cannot play opponent with a time limit. They can take days to move. Fix that and I'd give it an 8

same old game same old dance. I love chess but the online oppents makes this game a 4. Either you get some one who doesn't know what is what or some one who plays a move every hours or so.

    Not great

Pure chess isn’t bad in single player - Chess is Chess, there is a limit to how much you can vary it. There are plenty of computer opponents with various skill levels to beat, you can enter tournaments and solve Chess puzzles. It’s the online play which is the real let down. It’s the online play which is the real let down.

Rather than truly live (though once in a blue moon, you will get an opponent who will play the game to conclusion in one sitting). You play in a correspondence Chess (similar to postal chess back in the day, and believe me it’s just as slow!) style, where you might get an opponent making one move every 3 days.

This wouldn’t be so bad, but problem is, you can’t set any time controls, and so if an annoying opponent thinks he / she is loosing the game, he can simply stop playing - I’ve got 2 games going on at the moment where I am Checkmating my opponent on the next move, and they seem to have abandoned the games. There doesn’t seem to be any way to claim the games for stalling, and one of these opponents hasn’t moved in 2 weeks.

You can only have 6 games going on at the same time, so all in all it makes things intolerably slow. I’d give Pure Chess a miss.

While the single-player modes are fine (the a.i. is just as good as any other chess game i've played) not having a real-time multi-player mode really drives me away from playing this anymore than i have already

Pure Chess looks gorgeous, and offers an excellent single-player experience. But while playing the AI opponent is fun, the game's woefully underdeveloped online mode makes playing against humans decidedly not.

Solo players might enjoy this, as long as they don't stray online. [June 2014, p82]

Nevertheless, if you haven’t played the PS3 or Vita versions, and you’re eager to enjoy some virtual chess, then this is the best option currently available, as it really looks sensational.
