Add to the mix a FANTASTIC soundtrack, and you’ll find what’s essentially, one of the best role play games ever created. No matter how much you like gaming, you simply cannot afford to miss out on this masterpiece.

It’s not enough to just “Psychonauts” your way into the minds of your enemies to change their morals and make them confess to their crimes; you’ve got to broadcast to the whole of Tokyo that The Phantom Thieves are stealing the villains distorted desires. This lays out the core gameplay loop of Persona 5. Half the time it’s a social simulator where you interact with a diverse characters, each of which has a unique and developed personality, along with a major social issue, that you help them fix. Levelling up your “social links” grants abilities and bonuses in the other half of the game: a dungeon-crawling, party-based, turn-based JRPG. This is where the game goes into its own league. Inception into the minds of corrupt teachers, politicians, artists, and even a crime lord; then fight your way to the source of their twisted desires and steal it.
Persona 5 was released in 2017 by Atlus for the PlayStation Consoles. It was highly rated (average of 93/100 by user reviews), and well received by those who’d heard of the franchise before. The game brought in many new fans to the Persona franchise as a whole, including myself. Compared to its predecessors P5 goes above and beyond. It keeps the tried and true character development, along with the party combat format. But it adds so many more mechanics and stylish quirks that it just grows much higher than its predecessors.
The plot of the game follows a nameable protagonist who’s just moved to Tokyo on probation (after being arrested for defending an assault victim against a corrupt politician), and discovers that he can enter the Metaverse, a dimension made of Tokyo’s collective psyche. From here he makes allies and takes down some of Tokyo’s most corrupt or evil individuals.
As to the technical side of things, it holds up on all sides. The graphics are amazing, trumping not only every other Atlus game, both almost every other JRPG to date. Even on PS3, stylistic choices cause it to look good and run well. The mechanics start simple and get complex, but in a way that the player knows what they’re doing and feels rewarded for doing it. Mechanics such as “1 More!” and “All Out Attack!” add stylistic flow to the combat. The game gets progressively harder over the course of the game, allowing for challenging combat, especially on the hard and merciless difficulties.
Overall, I love this game. It performs amazingly, and does everything with so much style. It’s unique, it’s interesting and it’s deep. If you like JRPGs with interesting core mechanics, and more symbolism than an English Literature class, then this is the game for you!

I'll try to make this short. I've been a MegaTen fan for a while now, and I was super hyped about P5. However, I feel it falls short of its predecessors (P3 and P4) and in many ways:

I'll try to make this short. I've been a MegaTen fan for a while now, and I was super hyped about P5. However, I feel it falls short of its predecessors (P3 and P4) and in many ways:

    - It probably has the worst battle system of the lot. The new elements, Psy and Nuke, make the gameplay even more main-character dependant. All-out attacks are overpowered and make all other tactics pointless, and enemies who are hard to knock down are way tougher than anything else. Ambushes are broken, as enemies often get two turns attacking after one.

    - The supporting cast is the weakest of the three games; Ryuji is dumb and always mad, Ann is the ditzy blond who doesn't want to be sexualized but wears a catsuit, Morgana is a less interesting Teddy, Futaba is annoying, and Akechi is super tropey. Big bad is not interesting and only involved through some Deus Ex Machina garbage.

    - Story is also probably the weakest, the last chapters lazily throw in references to earlier events to make is sound like it was all part of an elaborate plan, even though adding connections between these events has no impact on the story.

    - There's too much dialog, I don't need to be told that unlocking a door is going to help me through this maze every single time, or what to do with this key that I've found in a room with a locked door. P3 and P4 already had quite a bit of dialog, but P5 pushes it way beyond that.

    - The new dungeons are quite good, but they become inacessible once finished. It's also hard to avoid enemies by running past them, and waiting to ambush enemies can make things long and monotonous. The camera gets testy when sneaking around, which may cause you to lose sight of that enemy you were trying to ambush. Mementos sucks.

Not everything about P5 is bad, obviously. The game is super polished, even the menu screens are flashy and stylish. Voice acting is pretty solid, and some of the soundtrack moves towards Nocturne and DDS style metal tunes. There are tons of locations to visit, and the different activities/mini-games are numerous and fun. The input method for battles makes things go faster, which is nice. Saving anywhere (except for dungeons) is pretty nice, too. But these things don't compensate for the poor design choices for the battle system, thin characters, and weak story.

I just finished Persona 5 after ~90 hours. The only thing that came close to this emotion was when I finished the Harry Potter series the night after the last book came out.

This game is simply a masterpiece - if you've ever even remotely enjoyed an RPG (even if it was just a brief stint with Pokemon Blue), you will love this game. Story, art style, music, characters, level design, customization... I could go on about everything that makes this game one of the best of the decade. Of course no game is perfect - in particular, I found some of the forced story sequences/hand-holding to last a little too long (I specifically remember one chunk of story-driven narrative lasting 30+ minutes before I could even find a place to save). But the sheer brilliance of everything else far outshines this, and I would give this game 11/10 if I could.

Persona 5 is without doubt one of the best games I've ever played in my 28 years on this planet, and is one I'm sure will be remembered as the pinnacle of JRPGs (actually, just RPGs in general) for the early 21st century.

Persona 5 is what final fantasy 15 should have been: a character driven, charming game where player agency is felt all troughout the experience.
It is impossible to explain the story of the game without spoilers, it is safe to say that, if you survive the early opening hours that revolve about world-building, by the time you defeat the first major boss you are hooked and invested in the life of the characters.
From a gameplay perspective there are 2 very distinct sections: inside or outside the dungeons.
Dungeons are the typical JRPG thing: you explore, you fight, you deviate from the path to collect rewarding loot.
When a monster (shadow here) is encountered, the battle system is Turn Based, in which the key to success is identifying strength and weaknesses of the opponent.
Despite being turn-based, the combat is fast paced and extremely stylish due to the cool menu design and the catch music.
Outside dungeons your goal is to leave the life of a teenager: making friends, deciding how to spend your time.
Your activities in the "not dungeon" will then increase stats like "intelligence" or "charme".
Icnreasing those stats will allow the player to unlock different interactions or story paths with the other party characters.
On paper, managing the live of a teenager sounds like the most boring thing ever, yet, as the story progresses, the investment is so high, that by the time the credits roll you can't help but wonder at how good the journey was.

Every year my friends and I get together and do an end of the year podcast. We just talk about our top 10 games of the year and I know this game is going to be the game of the year for 2 of them.

So I wanted to try this game and see why they like it so much. I enjoyed my time with the game but its just way too long for my taste. The game takes about 90-100 hours to beat and I prefer games that are around 30-40 hours. At least my RPG’s, I prefer them to be a bit shorter. A big reason for that is, I work about 45 hours a week. So during the work week, I only have 3-4 hours per night to play. That’s assuming I want to play a game every night. So during the work week, I can play for 15-16 hours. On the weekends I have more time but even then I typically don’t play games for than 12-15 hours on the weekends. So I game for 25-30 hours per week. That’s a lot of time for me to play my games but a game that’s 90-100 hours. That’s basically an entire month of me playing one game. I get burnt out before I ever get to end.

So my time with this game, I did enjoy. I played for about 20 hours and the story itself didn’t do a ton for me but I enjoyed the combat. I like Turn-based combat and looking for enemy weaknesses. Even though I did enjoy the combat, after about 20 hours. I started to grow bored of it. Knowing I had 70-80 more hours of the game. I decided to call it and really I accomplished my goal. I just wanted to experience the game and see what the fuss is about.

This game was not for and I went in knowing that but I always try to keep an open mind. If you’re into Japanese Role Playing Games then I highly recommend this one. It’s a well-made game that just too long for me.

The apex of JRPG. For me a 10/10 game is a game that defines a genre, if a friend of mine would like to try a JRPG for the first time Persona 5 would be the game that I would recommend. This was my first experience with Persona series and oh boy....who would guess that this game would be for me the best game of this generation, even surpassing The Witcher 3.

I always enjoyed RPG's but regarding JRPG's there was always something that kept me away from them (the closest experience that I had with these games was with the Kingdom Hearts series). The reason that i decided to try this game was because of the Universal acclaim that this game had received. After 136h I can say this was one of the most wonderful experiences that I had in my 10 years of gaming.

Now why did i fell in love with this game:

    - Interesting characters: I loved each time that i could hang out with them and learn new thing about them. You could even romance some of them, which would unlock new scenes with them during events like Christmas eve, School festival etc, you can even bring them to your room to "study". In the end of the game I feel very attached to each one of them, particularly the members of Phantom thieves.

    - Great and mature Story: Do not be deceived by the "cartoonish" looks of the game, it approaches themes like sexual exploration of students made by a teacher, plagiarism committed by a supposed famous artist, etc. From the beginning to the end the story never loses his focus and is always very nice. Seeing the development of the phantom thieves from the beginning to the end is amazing.

-Amazing combat: Persona 5's turn based combat is one of the best that i have seen, i never got bored fighting the shadows and exploring their weakness was always fun! I was always eager to get in a new fight and use my newly fused persona's.

    - Beautiful art-style: Everything in this game is stylish, from the beautiful city of shibuya, to the cool desing of the palaces, even the menu is very stylish. The design of the Persona's is awesome too.

    - Amazing soundtrack: From the soundtrack used in battles, to the soundtrack used in the city during the night, or during emotional dialogues with your confidants, everything regarding the soundtrack was amazing. I still find me singing the songs in my head.

-World: I never felt boring walking around in shibuya or in the other districts of Tokyo, during the day and night you always have things to do, like taking a bath to increase your charm, watch a movie with your girlfriend, work in a part time job to earn money and increase other social stats, help your confidants with their problems etc. This was always cool because you could see the grown that caused in your character (being more proficient, kinder, charmer, etc) and the development of your relationships with your confidants.Overall living your life as a student during the day and a phantom thief during the night was very entertaining, I never felt bored.

I enjoyed every single hour of my 136h with the game, and honestly I cannot find many negative issues with the game. The graphics were not the best, you can clearly see that this game was built for last-gen consoles (Ps3), but that was not a big issue because the art-style as I said before was amazing. One of the things that I would like was to see the impact of your grades in your classmates opinion, in spite of the fact that you were one of the best in your school your classmates never changer their opinion regarding you, but that for me was a very small issue. I would also like to see the impact of your romance on your teammates of the phantom thieves, they basically never became aware that you are romancing someone (even if you are romancing someone from the team), but I understand why Atlus made that decision (to preserve the harem route). However overall these issues were pretty minimal, and I still believe that this game deserves a 10. Right now I am in a "end-game-hangover", after spending 2 months playing this game I terribly miss the Phantom thieves...that speaks for how good the game is. I am thinking in starting watching the anime, maybe that will relieve me of this feeling.

If you are thinking in playing a JRPG I definitely recommend this one, It will be one hell of adventure!

The game itself is very long. It probably one of, if not the longest linear, story driven, single player game I’ve ever played. The game spends a lot of this time on character development and lets you slowly establish and build your relationship with those around you. It’s not afraid to “waste” time on everyday activities where you just talk and have a good time with your friend, which in the ends makes the characters feel much more real than many other games.

Even though there are some negatives in the game such as the clunky controls, lack of voiced dialogue in some conversations, a low variety of voice lines during combat that is used way too often and some other negatives, overall I found the game to be amazing! The story and characters hooked me to the game and the fact that the journey lasted a very long time makes it even better! The game had almost everything from a good story and characters to a nice art style and music and it also provided a challenging gameplay that somehow manages to throw in a bunch of humor and creepiness at the same time. An amazing game and I look forward to a Persona 6 in the future!

Visually it looks great and the combat is for the most part quite enjoyable but the story, Jesus, what a pile of wank and when coupled with some really crappy mechanics (despair I'm looking at you) and some completely unnecessary design choices (Mmm, I'm a mouse now; oh its a crappy airlock maze) they all combine to suck the fun out of the game. I'm at the last stage and can barely keep myself going it's such a slog.

This game could do with being about half the size and it would be a lot tighter and benefit the whole experience.

The dialog system rewards you for selecting the right command so much that you'll either end up reading a guide to choose correctly (because game time is so valuable) or you'll restart your game over and over again. it makes it feel completely pointless.. as if someone whose spending over 100 hours in a game would want to see a less complete story. I won't be giving Atlus another chance after this.. If i'm going to spend 100 hours in a game again it's going to have to have some dragon shouts or something.

just finished the game after 100 hours. its amazing. its so beautifully crafted, lots of attention to detail, great story, great characters, great change between real life and palace gameplay. sometimes the pace is really slow but you should enjoy the ride. truly one of the biggest games on ps4.

It's a good game. Good writing, deep gameplay, good story, nice art, nice mechanics. But poor design shows. The game was made in 2017 but plays like it's from the early 2000s. It has some of the worst controls I have ever seen in any game. Most of the time you find yourself fighting the controls rather than the enemies. A ton of long load screens. Also, this game is extremely linear.

This game is the best J-rpg of the current (and probably past) generation.

Great narrative with unique and very charismatic characters, good story , very well done voice acting and localisation, top level OST, really fun turn based combat with a lot of options, good graphics, level design, menus.... I could keep going for ever, this game is awesome.

    10/10 A game to remember.

    I'm not really into JRPG's
    I'm not really into anime
I'm not really into dating sims I'm not really into turn based combat despite all that I'm 100% into Persona 5, and it's my favorite game I played this year. That should give you an image of it's qualities. That being said, it's a game you play in a weird way, it's nothing out of the ordinary to stop playing for a month before

That being said, it's a game you play in a weird way, it's nothing out of the ordinary to stop playing for a month before picking it up again (it's story is quite long). This goes perfectly with it's laid back attitude while playing. The music is top notch and the pace is as fast as you want to play.

Good game- not amazing. I give it a 7 for enjoyment but an 8 for overall quality in art and polish. The story isn’t incredible but the bosses are very unique and interesting. Halfway through the game and I don’t feel like I’m missing out if I don’t finish it but I do want to just to see how it ends. Lots of time management that can get stressful so I recommend not worrying about efficiency on your first play through. Usually just when I get bored of daily life- it opens a new story arc and a dungeon that comes with it, which keeps me interested. I like the feeling of beating games, but since this will take a while, I’ll move on but I do suggest RPG enthusiasts to give this a try especially on a sale Expand

Persona 5 is an absolutely amazing game that convinces with its art style, music and story. It has anything one could ask for such a game and more. The turn-based battle system offers a wide array of opportunities. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea, it is definitely recommended to give it a go.

Persona 5 beats every other turn-based RPG in terms of production values, combat, story, symbolics, character design, music, pace and variety. 2017 is a great year for gaming and Persona 5 confirms this with a load of unmatched swagger.
