I have no idea why this game has such universal acclaim; presumably the hype has deluded people.

The single major issue I have with this game is the pacing of it. It is so incredibly slow, repetitive and linear despite seeming to be the opposite. There are a plethora of activities and methods to develop your character, yet most of the time you are conscripted into story-based activities. Each day has a cycle, yet this can be skipped entirely because of a story event. Finally when you are given some space when there is an upcoming boss, you are further restricted and pressurised by having a limited amount of time to level up, forcing you to choose specific skills, attributes and equipment develop. This really railroads the entire experience.

Related to the pace are the cutscenes. You are constantly pressing X in order to advance each conversation, a monotonous task in itself.

The above really marred the entire game for me. The graphics are fine, and the gameplay is excellent when you actually get to battle!

In the first fifteen minutes of this game, you get in trouble with the police for STOPPING A RAPE. Japan is the worst country in the world! (The game is set in Japan)

The last game made by Atlus, for the 3DS (!), Shin Megami Tensei IV, in this series, let you save anywhere, like every other game made after memory cards stopped being a thing (Xenoblade, TMS#FE, even FF13, which tanked in reviews). I really thought this game would be somewhat similar, but no. I waited forty minutes (because the saves have timestamps) between the start of the first dungeon and the next time I was allowed to save.
The first level is - ride the train to school, and transfer trains. Except... I can't read Japanese. All the signs are blurry. Nothing on the map tells you which train line is which. This is supposed to be fun? Commuting? You just walk around hitting every wrong direction while the game tells you that you are going the wrong way. Everyone who gave this a high score has impossible amounts of time to devote to video games and no other life responsibilities, but never mentions that in their review. You cannot just pick up and play this game for thirty minutes. You must devote your night to it, and if you want to sleep, you're going to lose progress.

The gameplay and visuals are definitely a step up from the last games, being that they were on the ps2 and this game is simply a straight-up upgrade on those elements of the game, with an incredible art style that extends to even the UI, and the combat is faster and more engaging than ever, with much more interesting dungeons, although some drag on a bit too long. However, the story and characters were the main thing that disappointed me. There is a reason people say persona 3 has the best story, 4 has the best characters and 5 has the best gameplay. Without spoilers, a lot of characters are rather one-dimensional and either boring or vaguely annoying and the plot is villain-of-the-week-esque with slight building up for the final act every now and then, and the middle section of the game is especially plodding. I loved the cast of persona 4 as though they were my real friends and the story of 3 is unforgettable. I entered 5 with too high of expectations I suppose, but compared to those games, for me at least, I was disappointed, which is a shame since those were the parts of the past games that made me love them so much, more so than the gameplay itself. Overall, it is still a great game, one of the best jrpgs ever made, but depending on why you love persona this game will either be your favourite or least favourite of 3-5. Expand

I'm a long time jrpg fan, but this is time i play a game from the Shin megami tensei series.
This game is one of the best jrpg i ever played, hell probably on of the best game i ever played in my long years as a gamer, and here is why.

    - The gameplay
For a turn based jrpg, this seems like a very fresh take on the turn based combat system.
There are a ton of little things that make the fights enjoyable: from exploiting enemies weakness for an extra action (and the possibility to pass it to another character), to the possibility to negotiate with the enemies if you corner them (or recruit them, or destroy them with an oll out attack), to giving a big role to ambush or being ambushed from the enemies in the map.
All the enemies are visible on the map, and approaching them in the right way (or avoiding them) is the key to success (or failure).
The fact that you can recruit all the enemies (with the exception of boss enemies), and fuse them to create new summons or useful items is also a very good mechanics.
Half of the game is a social simulator, with you deciding how to spend your limited time: you can spend it activities that will increase your social stats (that you'll need for events and confidants) or in confidants (people which will unlock useful abilities the more you become closer to them).
This part ask for a lot of thinking on how to manage your time the best way, but it is also very enjoyable.

    - The visuals
Cutscenes are done with anime (a very good looking one).
The ingame graphic is not top edge, but is very polished and interesting.
The characters are memorable without looking unrealistic.
The menus are stylish as hell.

    - The music and voice acting
This part of the game really shines. The music is great. There are a lot of song with vocals, and they are pretty great. Just search for the battle theme "last surprise", it's something you will never be tired of listening to.
The japanese voice acting is very good, i don't know about the english one since i played it subbed (not dubbed).

    - The story
The story is good, like very good, from start to finish. I think there are very few games with a story as good as Persona 5, and it is good from start to finish.

    - The longevity
This is a very long game. If you rush it maybe you can finish it in about 95 hours, but i spent 150 hours in it for a single full game run where i did all i could thing of.

Life changing game. In my whole life I just cried with a handful of games, and this was one of them. Not because some character died, or something sad happened on the story, but because it ended. Up to this day, a year later from purchasing the game, I'm still in love with it, and its music. Personal fabourite video game soundtrack.

Persona 5 is a magnificient game for many reasons. First, it has deep RPG mechanics so it will be appreciated by JRPG fans. I played this game for 145 hours ! Persona 5 talks about life, friendships and society. I acknowledge that the story can become emotional (like a movie) but I would say the main audience seems teenagers or 18-25 years old adults. I'm older that that but still really enjoyed this game.

I have some suggestions if you want to really benefit of all this game has to offer. Like the game tells you often, please take your time. This game is not designed to be rushed. Also, don't ignore what Morgana is saying. The cat has interesting advice, both for dungeons and real life. When you start the game, try also to find a general strategy. Which confidents would you like to develop more ? Why ? Which characters will you use in dungeons ? Which skills would create a good synergy in the team ? It can be really interesting to plan before exploring the dungeon. I also recommend to be aware that this game has different endings and in certain points, you will have to make important choices in the dialogue options (I'm a newcomer for the Persona series and I got a bad ending fist which disappointed me. Fortunately, I didn't saved after that so I was able to continue on the same file and just do a different choice. i won't say more here...) And one last thing, accept that you can't see everything in your first playthrough. This game is designed to be played many times.

I certainly recommend this game. I think it's pretty guaranteed that you will find something to enjoy in this game. I look forward to Persona 6 now :)

It's my first persona game, was easy to pick up and follow, has a lengthy tutorial (approx 8 hours) as it walks you through everything in practice and stages, freedom doesn't kick in until after this.
Not entirely a fan of the "normal life" part of the game and there is a metric crap ton of dialogue... otherwise the depth the game, it's story, the characters and world is truly amazing.

Worst of this game is that you can't save whenever you want nor autosave so this is a big issue if you want to play this game and you don't have much free time. The battle system is like old rpg, such as FF or Dragon Quest (turn-based games) and you gain some techniques when you advance in the game. Another thing would be when you move hiding from one place to another and sometimes you can't properly hide and then the enemy see you. It's not a big deal but in makes you move more carefully than you should. About characters, always say yes even when appears the message saying the relationship is not growing deeper. This message is normal so don't avoid it like I did at first. It can get a bit boring after the first hours so I'd only recommend this game to rpgs lovers and people who likes animes. Expand

Art direction and design are peerless; style oozes from every aspect of the game. The story is wonderful and entertaining with no way of getting every facet in one play-through. The game's mechanics work on a linear timeline, so paths have to be taken, but plaything through it again is hardly a chore. I've heard that the translation is lacking by friends abroad, but that doesn't affect me since I don't speak Japanese anyway.

If I had to have one gripe, it would be with the notion that you can't take screenshots or video clips unless you are streaming to YouTube and then download them after the fact. PC ports obviously don't have this issue, but still. I wasn't too pleased with the idea that I couldn't take and share screenshots.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Persona 5 is one of the most overrated games I've ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Everyone is ignoring the severe flaws that are in this game.
"It's the best game ever made!"
    "GOTY!"
    Heck no it ain't.
Now, I don't dislike everything about it. Otherwise, I would've given it a 1 or 0. The gameplay improvements, as well as the music are great. Certain arcs are great. However, everything else? Crap.
The story is the EXACT SAME THING as Persona 3 and 4. Go to a new town, supernatural crap happens, new dimension discovered, get party members, repeat 2 times, then pick up the story a bit. After that, reveal this human traitor (Which is always terribly executed, Ikutsuki was killed too fast, Adachi's motives were "I was bored, so I killed people", and Akechi was rushed, and they slapped a sad backstory on him). Oh no! There's this other guy pulling the strings, so we need to kill them! Kill "Epic god boss" (Which is terribly executed in Persona 4 and 5), and then end the game. In which it's the same thing as Persona 4.
As I said, Palace 1, 4, and 6 are great. However, 2 and 3 are just repeats of Palace 1, just with far worse execution. Palace 5's writing is utterly insulting, and condescending. They keep beating you over the head with obvious plot points that have been repeated. The palace is frustrating, and boring. All around garbage. Palace 7 is rushed, and despite the buildup, is highly underwhelming. Shido is a 1-dimensional cartoon villain with very little development. I've already explained Akechi earlier, so I'll leave that. Yaldabaoth's defeat with "You can do it Phantom Thieves!" is unbelievably contrived. I have never been so disappointed with a game's ending.
Confidants still do nothing for the story at all. Character development is the same thing. Get dragged into a palace for whatever the reason, encounter palace boss, get mad, rant about how they're not society's slave anymore, and then boom, awaken Persona. Proceed to get tossed off to the side right after the arc. Oh, and now their character development has been locked to Social Links, just like in Persona 4, which was a terrible decision. Great to see they've improved character development so much in this game. /s
Dialogue options still don't do a thing. How nice. Still haven't fixed that, I see. My god, can't they make this game more like Fallout, where dialogue options actually DO something? When will they finally address these?
Battle system is the same as Persona 4, just with the ability for One Mores to be passed to teammates, and hold ups. I guess that's some improvement. Oh, and I guess it looks prettier.

    In conclusion?

    Pros
    - Great starter arc
    - Palace 4 and 6 were well-done
    - Gameplay improvements
    - Music

    Cons
    - Repetitive in story, and character development
    - Beats you over the head with plot points we've already heard.
    - Contrivances
    - Traitor
    - Has some of the worst villains I've ever seen in a story
    - Character development locked to confidants
    - Confidants don't affect story
    - Dialogue options do nothing
    - Same thing as Persona 3 and 4

Incredibly disappointed by this game. Persona fanboys will hate on me for this. Go ahead. I don't care about this game anymore. On the bright side, someone's giving it away online for free.

The story is great, it tackles real world issues with a really unique style and in a way that doesnt feel like they're trying to force their opinion on you. As with any JRPG its lengthy whith my total play time coming to about 92 hr. (granted that all isnt story but still, i think i played the game like a normal person would without doing a bunch of side quests or grinding)

The combat is turn base but they introduce a lot of really cool features and systems that give turn based combat a breath of fresh air.

The graphics themsevles may not set any records but good lord is this game stylish. The game oozes style and just down right beatiful art style that to this day is still my all time fav that no game is even close to beating. The attention they put into all the art, characters, bad guys, enimies and just the game itself is staggering.

Down right best sound track in a video game in my opinion that suits every situation in the game with the perfect atmosphere.

The characters or "confidants" are all superb characters in their own right and the game rewards you with relevant perks and skills for spending the time to get to know these great characters.

This barely scratches how much i love and feel about this game. All in all this game is just a must play, even if you dont like JRPG's. (wait for it to go on sale!) i've seen many people who dont like or play JRPG's that tried this game and enjoyed themselves. In total the game is just an outstanding package that delivers on so many levels, so much so that even a year later i still love this game just as much as when i first played it and still carry what i felt and took away from it to this day. At the end of the day i think thats probably the biggest factor in any game, what did it make you feel? What did you take away and does it stick with you?
